Concepts well explained. Teaches with a conversational kind of voice as opposed to a stern and flat voice. Participation grades taken using clicker question. Only one question posted at the start of every lecture, if you're late by 5 mins or clicker dies you don't get the grades and she won't care. 2 midterms 1 final 1 paper. Every effort counts.
Her lectures were never boring. Very helpful. One of the best prof I have had in my UBC career!
She's not bad, she does care for students and is passionate about her work. That being said, she's not all that great at teaching. It seems when needs to explain things herself she doesn't feel confident in what she says. She's questioning herself as she speaks. Doesn't really help from a learning standpoint, and lectures aren't that engaging tbh.
She's actually the most fun professor I've had. Did not have a single time where I almost fell asleep. Often very engaging and walks around the room to discuss with students. Plus shes also kinda cute so who wouldn't want to show up to that class? <3
I really have a hard time with this prof. She is not at all clear with her expectations, is not confident in delivering information, often answers questions with "I don't know", and is unbelievably distracting during exams (talking and hovering). Honestly, it's hard to believe she is a professional. I just don't find her inspiring at all.
I love Grace! I don't know why she has any bad reviews. Yes, her exams are pretty hard but so is every other psych exam. If you go to lecture and do the readings you should get an A or B. I actually enjoyed going to lecture because she was such a fun prof! She let us skip 1 of the midterms and that 25% would go to the final.
I took psych as an elective. Her lectures are amazing, but her midterms are brutal. I never though psych would be so hard.
Very little emphasis on textbook memorization and much more emphasis on understanding and applying concepts. She likes to teach a lot of the concepts by performing them on you with in-class activities which help to make the concepts more memorable. Tests are worth relatively little and our final essentially only covered topics after midterm 2.
GREAT lecturer. She knows how to convey info to her students thoroughly and make it stick but man oh man are her exams tricky. The material itself was not hard, but she does emphasize some application as opposed to pure memorization. I learnt a lot but that said probably wouldn't subject my gpa to another one of her classes.
Very boring lectures (even though she tries to make them interesting - perhaps the material is simply boring), found her kind of condescending. Tests were weighed heavy, but lecture slides + lectures weren't very helpful for exams: relied on textbook to succeed. Didn't enjoy the class, she was ok, nothing special.
The midterms and final are very, very tricky and it is mostly based on the textbook material. Know the textbook and the studies in the textbook very well. The writing assignments are harshly graded and I found them difficult to write. Also, Professor Truong is sometimes confusing when she is lecturing.
Took PSYC 101 because it fit my schedule. Definitely not a GPA booster, but interesting. The prof was very approachable and made the class feel casual. Make sure to read the textbook; it seems unnecessary at first, but it's important for the exams. I suspect that you'll love her if you're a psychology major.
This prof was friendly, however condescending. She does not own up to her mistakes easily and tends to make the students feel bad. She tries to teach material using humour but she ends up just reading off her lecture slides. However, the exams are textbook heavy when she explicitly says that it is only 15% textbook based.
Her exams are horrible multiple choice is the worst. A,B,C have answers, D and E have things like D) 2 of the above are correct and E) all of the above are correct. Memorize every little detail because you need it. Short answer is fine just mind manipulation on the multiple choice.
She does a wonderful job of explaining concepts and gives great examples that make the lecture easy to understand, interesting, and engaging. HOWEVER, I still do NOT recommend taking this class because the way the exams are written are extremely confusing and hard to understand. This was highly discouraging and not worth it whatsoever.
Grace seems like a really nice person but I found her lectures incredibly boring. She does a lot of rephrasing of the slides rather than truly elaborating and providing interesting examples on them. Also she didn't really connect with the class. She's a young professor so hopefully she'll improve as she goes.
She understand her stats inside out. She is great explaining in detail and she gives lots of examples. Her exams are challenging but nothing you cant manage if you attend lecture.
Dr. Truong is an avid follower of UBC psyc grade guidelines. She will make the tests super hard in order to keep the average down. The questions sometimes poorly worded and you have to know ALL the details to answer them correctly. She is a good lecturer but super hard on exams, maybe try another prof.
I don't really like this course. Ridiculous boring class but ridiculous hard exams. She did not really explain her slides but expect you to know a lot in exams. MCs were tricky and short answers were strictly graded. She tried very hard to keep the average low. You will find the textbook is much more fun to read.
This class is pretty straight forward. Grace makes concepts easy to understand. Lots of unnecessary group work in lectures; skipped due to that (not my cup of tea). Overall pretty fair course, don't expect to get an A if you do not understand concepts clearly.
Course material isnt hard but you have to memorize every detail because fo the way she sets her questions up. Dont take this class if you dont have to. Dont take this class if you need an "easy A"
She's an OK prof, lectures are rather boring. Lecture slides aren't that useful when studying. Not much practice material before quizzes and exams. Personally I'd prefer more assignments and practice questions, gives you a better idea of what to expect on the exam. Test heavy.
I dont know about the rest of the reviews for her. She is a good professor. You have to work for good grades, they're not handed to you. I read the textbook and attended every lecture. Make sure you read the assigned chapters. Finished with an A.
I don't know how could she become a Prof since she barely explains anything about exams, I tried to read the textbook my own, there were lots of things in the textbook while are not mentioned in the class at all. And they do appear on the exam. I strongly do not recommend take her course 101
Grace is one of my favourite professors. She gives really great examples in class that make concepts easier to understand. She also speaks very clearly and gives engaging lectures. Do the readings. The textbook chapters are not too long and well written. If you do the readings and make good notes you will do well on the quizzes.
Her slides are super unorganized. She wastes so much time on useless tasks, instead of teaching about the material, which would be more helpful for the exam. You don't have much to practice for the midterms. She tries too hard to be funny, which doesn't work that well.
Dont do it.
Just dont do i.t mixed slides and harder exams. Even you will face questions are not covered in class but from book someone should let her know that we are not satisfaction of your ego. If you are low key bad prof then ask more simple questions on exams.
Her exams are suck. Slides are confusing and not in a coherent order.
I am in depression because of her class. I really though psychology would be my major and i will have career on that till I take her class. Its a fun subject but everything sucks in class exams, slides, teaching methods. Please If you think psyc is inspering you then dont take her class. My all dreams DEAD !!!
Dr Truong is an amazing professor. Her lectures are super helpful if you are a visual learner, as she provided a lot of picture, video and verbal examples of the content. I found this helped a lot. Mid terms and final exams are worth a lot but final project was only worth 10% which I found nice. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get clicker marks.
Exams are tricky and heavy.
Her slides are super unorganized. She wastes so much time on useless tasks, instead of teaching about the material, which would be more helpful for the exam.
Her exams are horrible multiple choice is the worst. A,B,C have answers, D and E have things like D) 2 of the above are correct and E) all of the above are correct. Memorize every little detail because you need it.
Pros -- slides are organized, easy to read, have good examples. As soon as she's finished, she'll let the class go (sometimes 30 min early!) Cons -- tests (short midterms tbh) start RIGHT when class does and they're hard so you need to memorize lots of concepts and be able to apply them. Also, annoying time-consuming group projects!
Just don't do it. Take the class with any other prof.
I absolutely loved Grace-- her rating seems far too low. Grace is extremely engaging, funny, and always willing to help. The class itself you'll have to work for. The textbook is very important, so read up. Lectures hold slightly more importance in terms of the exams-- going over the slides (which she posts!) in detail will be highly beneficial.
super nitpicky, refuses to share formulas or slides, classes don't teach the difficult parts of stats, does give practice tests which help, deducts late marks even if assignments are one minute late, goes slow which can help at complicated parts but even the most basic concepts take hours.
I'll start with the positive: she lectures well Negative: she thinks very highly of herself and her class which leads to her taking herself WAY too seriously. She tries acting "casual" while lecturing, be she is actually quite un-kind and not at all accommodating or understanding of the fact that student's have lots to deal with. I do NOT recommend
Some thing that certain profs dont realize is that the 0.01 clicker participation grade of one class or 2 marks on an assignment dont change anyone's letter grade but it does make students dislike you, the class, and the subject. Grace is one of those profs. There are some things you dont learn from books Grace. Learn to make students like you!
Unfortunately I did not enjoy Grace as a professor. Her exam questions are nitpicky and seem to serve to confuse you rather than "celebrate your knowledge" as she puts it. Her lectures are average, but she also likes to have the class discuss with each other for 1 minute and answer clicker questions randomly. Choose another if you have the option.
Psych is not my field and I expectected the course to be very dry, but because of Grace's enthusiasm I was way more motivated than expected. You can get a pretty good grade by only using the lecture slides (would say B+), but she also gives a few textbook only questions. Reading the book takes time, but focusing on the key concepts is often enough.
Dr. Truong is a very solid professor, a lot of these reviews do not understand that she has to fall within the distribution for PSYC courses. She makes her exams intentionally more difficult to make sure it falls within that distribution, she will always scale up and never down. Very lecture heavy exams but effective lecturer. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Grace is a nice person but her midterms are insanely hard. All content seems easy during lectures, but once you take the exam, it's like you forget everything. Avoid if you're not a studying freak.
Her lectures were always really all over the place, and not the most interesting. There weren't too many assignments but they were always graded pretty toughly. Her midterms are harder than you think they'll be, so the class is definitely not an easy A.
Grace was a great professor and clearly knew how to dumb down statistics into a way some us could understand. She was very kind and approachable and understanding. The class was super difficult so you need to study consistently and affectively.
Let's just put it this way. There is a reason why only 33% would retake her. Take the class with literally any other prof. Midterms and final were brutal.
Worst prof i've ever had, doesn't care about your actual learning and is very unsympathetic. Take literally ANY OTHER prof if you can.
Grace explains the material in a way that makes it easy to grasp. You can tell that she cares about her students. Her tests are not difficult if you study well and she offers lots of prep material for them.
Do not take.
Just before exams, she told us our scores don't reflect our worth, which I think a lot of us needed to hear. Some days have mandatory attendance, and slides are shared. She encourages us to work as groups, but it can be avoided too. Piazza participation is required. The textbook is a supplement to lectures, and class material is easy to follow.
Dr. Truong is definitely a good lecturer. Alas, she can be incredibly condescending when interacting with students. There's a fake nice to her that really seems to turn students off. That said, she gave me a chance to make up a midterm that I missed with no good excuse. If you study hard you'll do well, just don't expect to be BFFs.
Midterm questions are unnecessarily convoluted, too many grades for tests too few for assignments.
Professor Truong is painfully average professor. Online learning consists of ONLY asynchronous material. Felt like the textbook was teaching me instead of her. Midterms are not too bad, except most of our grade comes from our tests because we only did ONE assignment this term. She could step it up.
The online class is a mess. You are better off by just reading the textbook because all the material she posts are worthless.
Dr. Truong simply did not care enough about her students. The whole class was pre-recorded and I was learning better from the textbook. Exams were nothing like sample questions.
I personally liked that the course was asynchronous - this was done to accomodate high volumes of students overseas. The quizzes are from the textbook's company and aren't great, but you can retake them infinitely. Mostly multiple choice midterms. The textbook is entertaining but mandatory reading. Highly recommend if you hate synchronous classes.
Professor Truong wasn't engaging (I sped up every lecture), her lectures weren't informative, I had to teach myself the content through the textbook, and was completely asyncronous. The midterms had a lot of textbook content that she didn't cover in her lectures. The only reason I did well in the class was because of the textbook practice quizzes.
This class brought me nothing but pain. It was ALL self-taught. Lectures were mostly only 5-8 minutes, meaning she barely goes over any info. Literally just summarizes the textbook and tests on random stuff that was never mentioned anywhere. Material was interesting, I would've liked it better if I didn't have to teach myself. GET A DIFFERENT PROF
As a student interested in pursuing psychology, Grace's class was the worst introduction. This online class consisted of 7-minute lectures that did not explain the course material at all. The only way you will succeed is if you teach yourself the material. I do not recommend taking this course, it was a complete waste of time and money.
She's enthusiastic and fun during her lectures. Tests were difficult but fair. She dumbs things down a lot, doing as much as she can to explain concepts clearly. She's respectful, approachable, and caring. Overall great person and great teacher.
Tbh I liked that this class was completely asynchronous and basically self-taught thru the textbook because of timezone issues but her lectures were very short (a few mins max 15). Grading was kind of harsh, but quite fair. If you take PSYC101 with her I highly recommend doing the learning curves for practice.
Grace's lectures were completely asynchronous so if you're good at teaching yourself, this is the class for you. The exams are definitely textbook heavy and she doesn't touch on a lot of concepts in her lectures. I recommend doing the Learning Curve activities (online @ the end of each chapter) until you're sick of them... it works!
Dr. Truong is very caring, respectful, and accomodating - she is more than willing to give out extensions if needed. She's genuinely such a sweetheart and takes the time to make lectures fun and reduce student anxiety. The key to doing well on her tests (from my experience) is to treat them like a math question and write all the info given down.
Seemed kind and easy-going, but lectures were not at all helpful and very short and fast-paced. You basically had to learn everything by yourself by reading the textbook. Practice exams were much easier and had nothing to do with the actual exams. In my opinion, she did not seem like she cared at all about how well her students did in her class.
I took her class as online and her lectures were very short (4-10 minutes) and its basically not helpful at all. if you like reading, take this class. don't even bother watching the lectures. she is a very sweet person and very nice but doesn't really teach you content and just expects you to read the textbook. definitely a self taught class.
I have taken PSYC 217 and PSYC 218 with Dr. Truong and the reviews here are making her classes look worse than it actually is. Of course, like every other class, you need to do your assignments, practice questions, actively listening to her lectures, and read the textbook!!!! Dr. Truong is an excellent professor and she will help with the concepts.
In the lectures, Grace did a lot to make the material relatable to students and easy to follow along with, although I did find her a bit condescending through correspondence outside of class. All in all though, definitely not a bad choice for a 217 professor, I never felt overwhelmed by the material.
Doesn't explain concepts, doesn't answer questions properly. Can be rude in her responses via email. Tests aren't bad but doesn't give much info about them before hand.
I wanted to like Grace because she's very sweet and I do find her teaching style accessible. But at the end of the day, when even the TAs report not agreeing with her strict grading standards, that means a whole lot of unnecessary anxiety when what should matter is your understanding of the content, not how you worded a sentence. Disappointing.
Grace's lectures are super relaxed and funny. She also gave us many practice questions to make sure we really understand the concepts, which is really helpful! She is actually a friendly prof, just that her emails can be a bit cold (but she explains your questions well). Tests may be tricky cuz it's often based on theories from textbook materials.
Grace was such a gem! While the subject wasn't the most interesting thing in the world (stats) Dr. Truong put in an incredible effort every day to keep us engaged and having fun. I went to her office hour to talk about possible options for RA positions and she went 40 minutes over her time just to make sure I had a good plan for my future.
Grace was amazing. As an Arts student who had to take PSYCH 218 - a statistics course - she made the material very clear and understandable. If there was ever any confusion, she gave time to answer your questions and gave many examples that she thoroughly explained. There were 2 midterms (both easy) and 6 lab assignments. Overall, great prof
She was great! I read her reviews here and got really scared before the class started. I'm not sure why people are complaining. I managed a 90 without reading the book. She explains really well and manages to simplify complicated concepts so that they are easily understandable. Stats can get boring but she managed to make it fun and interesting.
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews??? Dr Truong is clearly one of my favourite professors throughout my academic career. She is the best professor you could get for 217 and 218. I got a 91 and 98 in her classes respectively.
Grace is honestly a great prof, she explains concepts very well. Honestly, if you just show up to class and pay attention, understanding the material is very easy. She doesnt go over all the concepts in the textbook but the tests generally only cover the stuff she went over in lectures. Grace is also super friendly and not intimidating at all!
The worst professor I've ever met in my life. I got an A but basically self-taught. Like others' said, her email responses were soooo RUDE and condescending, full of aggression. It's kind of creepy that you found she has a completely different personality once leaving the lectures. Maybe she should learn some MANNERS first.
Grace is honestly a really hilarious prof. I understand that the course materials might be boring but her lectures are AMAZING. I don't really understand why she got such a low rating lol. But tbh, her quizzes are indeed challenging. I'll definitely take her class again tho.
The profs test were so hard I felt like I couldnt get through them without fighting back tears. I knew all the material and trust me Im not just saying that, I studied and knew it and her tests were worded so hard and so many select all that apply that you didnt even know where to begin. I cant express to you how rude she is in her emails too
Grace's lectures are really interesting and its easy to stay focused because of it. The material doesn't seem super difficult. However, the tests are literally impossible. No matter how long I study it seems like the grade can't get good, because the open response could have so many answers, and the graders grade specific to the right answer.
She is good at giving lectures and explaining material. However, her exams are really hard and you have to read every sentence of the chapter because the questions are just THAT hard, specially for a first year course. I do not understand why she has to make such tough questions with MC, fill in the blank and choose from multiple correct answers..
She was very helpful in office hours and her lectures were engaging!
Grace is amazing! I think the people that have rated her lowly are either not putting in their full effort, or not making use of the resources Grace provides with. If you are struggling, Grace will be so happy to reexplain concepts, either at her office hours or before/after lecture! She is so caring and funny. Take notes and you'll do great.
She is nice inside class, and has fun lectures. However Unnecessarily hard tests for a first year course. If you love psychology and really want to learn it, maybe take her but you need to STUDY HARD and suffer to pass the course. But if you're taking it for an elective, just don't. save yourself and don't drop your GPA for this course
Dr. Truong is a very down to earth professor. Tips for this class: read the textbook as well as attend the lectures and you'll do fine. The tests can be difficult but I found her to be very accessible for help.
I enjoyed attending Professor Troung's lectures. she made it fun and engaging. however, the tests are no joke. they can be extremely difficult despite the amount of studying and textbook reading you accomplish. be prepared to work hard in this class!
don't get me wrong, she's a great professor and she's very approachable. i enjoyed her class, however her tests are insanely hard. i studied my ass off and i know many people in the class did, but midterm and final average for 350 students was in the 50% range. pro tip i would say is to know the ins and outs of your textbook and attend EVERY class
She is the worst professor. All of her tests had averages in the 50s for a 101 class. Thats honestly embarrassing. The final had a mean of 59. Even if you study the material, the way she does tests is horrific and you wont know anything because of the way she phrases them. She also has a stick up her butt about contacting her after the exams
Very caring of students' mental health and extremely excessible to answer questions (via email and before/after class as well). Tests were somewhat difficult/specific concepts from the textbook but if you review the lectures, read the textbook, and actually understand the themes you'll do well (don't focus on memorizing definitions and themes).
her lectures make concepts really easy to grasp. she has diagrams, sample problems, and gives frequent breaks for discussion. lectures were livestreamed and recorded, and participation is marked through tophat. she's my favourite psyc prof. not the most interesting, but the best for my gpa, and very polite and understanding in emails.
Lectures every class period with the exception of a few labs. There are a few writing assignments like essays and such. TAs grade even tougher than the professor so be aware. Lots of applied material is covered in class that isn't worth skipping class for. Please please please attend her office hours. You have no idea how beneficial this truly is.
Shes not as bad as the reviews imo, her lectures are super fun and engaging. However, the tests/midterms are absolutely messed up. Everyone studied so hard, done the bonus, and aced practice quizzes but would still get like 50-60% on the tests. I thought I did good, nope one test got 58%. The worst part is that u cant see the right answers after
open book quiz and straight forward questions on exams
Yikes. Very two-faced and condescending to students genuinely going through a lot. (especially considering that we're in the middle of a pandemic and many people know others getting sick & dying). Her class would have been manageable, let alone enjoyable if she was more pleasant and didn't go out of her way to overcomplicate tests to trip you up.
Prof Truong was a very good professor! I didn't get a good grade, but that's on me. Her lectures were engaging and she made the content easy to understand. The tests are difficult, but they are open book, and if you prepare properly for them, you'll get a good grade.
I've had her for two courses now (Psych 217 and 218) and she is the best professor I've ever had at UBC. She is so sweet, her lectures are easy to follow along with, and she always thoroughly answers questions. She also will always make time to see you outside of class. Quizzes and exams are straightforward and there are no surprises :)
She is truly an amazing prof. She is humorous and caring and also explains painstakingly with good clarifications. She is also very helpful if you approach her. Midterms are hard at first but after the first one you will kind of get what she wants and how to study for it. I do recommend going to her office hours cause they are so useful.
The course is pretty easy as an elective for ELEC engineers, but there's just so much reading it's difficult to balance with other courses. Midterms are open book, so rely on CTR + F in the textbook. Just make sure to do the participation points and psych surveys for extra points (which I should have done), it'll bump you up a few points.
Interesting lectures, she relates to real world situations for easier understanding. Weekly quizzes, tough midterms but if you keep up with the readings it's not super difficult. Textbook itself is fun and easy to read!
Definitely wouldn't recommend taking this class with her to anyone
The exams are way more complex than the lectures. do not see any empathy toward the students. very condescending and judgmental. don't feel comfortable emailing her.
Not sure why people don't like her, maybe its a PSYC 217 thing. She was super funny, engaging, and explained material really well in PSYC 101. Available in office hours and very helpful and kind. Exams were on the harder side, but its psych so its expected. Participation encouraged, not mandatory. Really interesting content and useful textbook
i had pscy217 with her, and it was quite tough. our class average for one of the midterms was so low, that she had to scale up by nearly 15% and her tests are way too tough. i personally wouldnt recommend. shes a really tough grader.
While she is really nice and explains her lectures well, her tests are extremely difficult and she is an even more difficult grader. Would urge everybody to not take a psyc class with her EVER.
I thought that Dr. Truong was a really great prof. It was very clear what was going to be on the tests and if you really knew the material on the lecture slides you could get a good mark. I thought her class was really fair and you are graded on a lot of different things! Loved the class!
Dr Truong was really sweet and funny, but don't be fooled by the easy in-class participation clickers, the exams were HARD. I think attending all lectures in this course is really important to get a good grade, even if they were made available online (which was helpful!).
Professor Truong was amazing! Psyc 217 is a difficult class, but her lectures were engaging and easy to understand. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. However, her exams are on the hard side and will ask specific questions from the textbook so make sure you stay on top of the readings.
Not a good prof, and she's a genuinely unlikeable person/lacks empathy. If you can take 218 with literally anyone else do it.
I was really scared for this class because of the rate my prof reviews and I suck at math. Yes the exams are marked really hard but the class gets scaled A LOT at the end and the assignments are pretty easy. She's also really good at meeting with you. I came to her for tech help and also because I felt like an assignment wasn't marked well.
At first when I saw the reviews, I was expecting her to be a really tough prof. But in reality her lectures are interesting, so interesting that I found myself constantly being engaged in the content despite being 3 hours long. She is super accessible outside of class and would give great advice on how to succeed.
Prof. Truong for 217 is great. She makes time for questions and does participation questions which are really helpful for reviewing information. Everything is laid out step by step so it's hard to miss something or be confused about an assignment. Most of the informaiton is review from 101-102 so if you payed attention there you'll be fine.
She was good with teaching but her exams are unnecessarily hard, one of the averages was 50%. I highly advise anyone from taking her class, chose someone else, literally anyone else
I did really enjoy taking her class. She is really good at explaining different concepts and I had no trouble at all.
grace is the kindest prof i have ever met. she is incredibly kind, respectful, friendly, helpful, and so accessible. she spends so much time and effort making sure students understand. go to office hours! this class was hard but she is an amazing prof and i do not regret taking her class. she is so intelligent and hardworking. thank you grace!
I liked Dr. Truong's lectures a lot and found them super engaging. Her exams were a lot harder than they needed to be. I'm looking forward to midterm 2 being scaled up... a 50 average for a second-year class is rough. I felt that the exam was an inaccurate reflection of the course content. I enjoyed how well-organized and structured the course was.
She is one of the best prof. Her teaching style: engage student by giving a real life examples: easy to understand & organized. She is caring and kind and will make you feel safe when taking exams. Exams are difficult if you don't study well so make sure to understand the concepts & terms. She is passionate in teaching students!!
Truong is amazing! It is very evident that she cares about each student and genuinely wants everyone to do well and understand the content she teaches. Always available to talk outside of class. I definitely recommend! Exams aren't bad if you go to class.
class final average was low 50s, tough grader, paper doesnt make sense.
Anyone who dislikes Dr. Truong: consider yourself an opp! I actually love her so much! Has the best energy in lectures and explains concepts so well. Learned so much with her! Had multiple conversations with her and she's such a genuinely sweet person. Some tests had to be scaled up, but I thought they were quite fair. One of my fav profs at UBC fr
grace has great energy in lectures, seems like a kind, bubbly person. her con is that her tests are somewhat difficult, not really the content, but the way questions are worded make it hard to come up with just one answer (when there could be multiple answers). there is a term paper, work closely with the TA as they will be grading you.
she's really sweet and engaging during lectures, but the midterms are comparatively difficult (with low class averages - the average for our final was around 50%!!!). READ the textbook, take lots of notes during class, & don't be afraid to email the TAs for any help (since you'll be working closely w/ them for group project related things!).
She really cares about her students and is just so supportive if you show that you want to learn. My only complaint is sometimes the exams did not match the class content well enough.
Dr. Truong is incredibly kind and understanding of her students. She is patient and explains content well. Only downside to her teaching style is that the exams are often harder than the content shown in class (SO READ THE TEXTBOOK)!! Overall, love her.
Grace is great! I walked into 218 expecting to fail because math and stats is not my thing, but it turned out to be one of the best courses I took! She gives out clear instructions and tutorial videos for each assignment (super easy), and provide practice questions which are very helpful. Would definitely recommend! (this is a summer course I took
I love Dr. Truong's teaching so much. She really cares about her students, and she will help you if you care about psychology. Really kind, especially when I had several concessions due to being immunocompromised and having a learning disability. Also we won the 217 award so like clearly her class is goated.
She was amazing. I felt so confident and comfortable with statistics after her class. She was also very accommodating if something came up :)
Dr Truong is a really nice professor, who explains the material thoroughly. That being said, It is very important to attend the lectures to score a good grade in her exams. I got a 65% on the first midterm and 85% on the second one after I attend all the classes after midterm 1. The final was much tougher though.
Great prof! VERY tough grader. I didn't fail any of her exams or assignments but it was still challenging. The averages were in the 50s. Overall, just don't take her courses if you're sensitive about grades. Other than that she's very kind, engaging, and helpful.
She is super kind and engaging and makes boring content more digestible. The tests are a little brutal and I dont think they fully capture what's actually important to know. Averages for midterms were in the 50s and 60s. If you actually study and read the textbook you can be well above the average, but the exams are still a little rough
test very difficult
A really great, caring prof who you can tell cares about what she teaches. The group project portion is a large part of your grade. The midterms and exams are incredibly difficult in comparison to the wording of the lectures, but it's doable.
This year, instead of Professor Truong grading it was her three master students! Their names are Irene, Jessica, and Raymond. Irene knew the material well; at some points, the other 2 seemed like they didn't know what they were doing. Midterms and finals are all based on lectures and slides. Overall fun course.
I didn't have Dr. Truong herself, instead it was 3 Masters students teaching different thirds of the course. But the course itself was fairly straightforward, it mainly comes down to the exams (the Masters students wrote them). A lil bit of a gamble w/ the instructors of the course but overall I'm happy with how the course and instructing ended up!
Instead of Professor Truong, I had 3 PHD students. Irene was amazing and taught the material very well. Midterms and finals were a gamble as each prof taught a different month so midterm 1 questions compared to midterm 2 were very different same with the final. The final was very different and confusing as it asked things specific to the lecture.
She is so sweet and caring. The test are tough but way easier if you read the textbook (READ not skim). Even with PSYC-217 often being a boring subject, she kept class interesting and engaging.
Grace's lectures are super informative and she's a great teacher. She's super good at explaining everything, however, she is an extremely tough marker and her exams are very difficult wording-wise (averages in the 50s)... however if you pay attention and study you should be able to achieve a good grade!
