Oh Dr. Cherry... as everyone else said, he gets frustrated easily. He hated a few of us for not buying books. Sorry but not everyone can afford to. He got PISSED every time we came to class without a book. I feel that affected my grade bc he thought we didnt care to buy a book. BITE ME dr. C!
I'm laughing about the person who thinks their bad grade had something to do with not purchasing the book. DUH! Ya think!? Dr. Cherry is knowledgeable. I wish his lectures were more streamlined and had fewer diversions. He is friendly & a snappy dresser. I wish he could make it more interesting.
has the personality of a driver/anyalitic. really wants people to learn. if you can't afford the book don't go to the class. by it on ebay or halfbooks.com. taught me a lot. can get off topic sometimes. dont be tardy or absent
Really good teacher, but as everyone else mentioned, SHOW UP TO CLASS AND BRING YOUR BOOK. If you do both it is apparent that he is not as harsh on your work. I was making an A at the midterm, missed a few classes after that, and ended up with a C. Dont mess with the man's attendance.
OMG!I enjoy english but he makes me wanna throw something at him.Don't be late, don't get up during class,nothing.I feel like I wanna thrown something at him b/c he treats us as if we were stupid and repeats himself 50 times. Def. don't recommend him.
This is the most boring class that I have EVER taken. I would x it out of every course book if i could. I would not reccomend this class to my worst enemy. I think a terrorist would break in his class after 5 minutes of lecture.
his grading system: C= Very good, B= Excellent, A= out of this world; so unless u are a "professional" writter (which is why we take the class), dont take him! he would give a C to an English professor's essay too! so u can make out what i am saying i hope!
Dr. Cherry is an amazing Prof! He KNOWS his stuff and has a lot to offer. However do not expect an easy A. You actually have to LEARN in this class to pass. If you are serious about English, I highly recommend him.
tends to be soft spoken and hard to hear. Give clear percise instructions that are easy to follow if heard. Teaches and instructs in a very hands on mannor. One of my favorite engilsh teachers i have ever had

Goes off on random tangets about how we dont care about english and that we aren't going anywhere in life. Rude and picks favorites. Grades your papers on how much you participate in class. Not recommended for anyone that's a freshmen! AT ALL!
He is obviously very intelligent, but is not skilled at teaching. His handout assignments are very clear, but his writing assignments are incredibly un-interesting. He rambles on in lecture about nothing worth remembering, but demands that you be there. I wouldn’t recommend him...
Seems to know what he is talking about but can not put it into words, rambels on and on can not stay on topic and demands you be there for class. Very strict when it comes to grading
This guy is out of his mind. He may be bi-polar. He rambles on, repeating words over and over about his personal life, which no one seems to care about. He grades as if one were turning in a dissertation. Everyone hates this class. Many have dropped. Do not take this basket case's English class.

Good Professor!! Leran your MLA format before coming to class!! Be motivated to do some critical thinking because that is what this professor expects as you should expect from your college experience--to think a little!! Go to every class, pay attention, and be on time and you will do just fine in Dr. Cherry's class. Handouts are very clear!!!!

i liked him, not many others seemed to though. the writing center told me my papers had a "lot to improve on"..and cherry gave me an A on all of them. you will get the grade you deserve - his handouts are SO clear, they are exact outlines. nothing we discuss in class seems to help on the papers though
He drove me nuts. While he knows his field very well, he is one of the worst teachers i've ever encountered. He rambles about his personal life, picks favorites, repeats single words, etc. He said my first paper was the best in the class; then i corrected his retelling of Oedipus and got consistent Cs. If you are ready to be discipline in writting correctly then this is the class for you. He is very passionate about what he teaches.Please don't let the outer appearance fool you because he loves for his students to interact and communicate with him. he does have a humorous side.

Not a good teacher, is too personal in what he talks about. most what he says does not pertain to the class or the topics to write about, and on top of that he grades hard. a weird guy and he repeats his last word of the sentence several times for some odd reason.

I had him during the summer and he's ok but you can hardly understand him, he stutters over the same subject he grades hard..he grades more on grammar than the actual essay
This is my third post and 5 semesters after I took his class and Im still regretting i did so! He will pick favourites and those will only get an A. The grade you get in your first essay is probably the grade you will get in the class or even lower. No improvement will impress him so dont even try!
Dr. Cherry counts attendance and he'll just tell you to drop the class if you miss too many days so if you're not going to come don't take him. He lectures most of his class. His grading system is very random, no set guides for grading it is either a good or bad paper, most of the time he is pretty hard at grading.
yo big mistake. His attendance is crucial, never a set grading system, he is an old scrooge that will literally write a red X through your paper. he expects the nobel piece prize from your writing

RUN!he is very cruciual on elementary things. You would think that he would rate and grade you on the content and feelings that come from within your work but he REALLY does not care. terrible. when he grades your papers, its like he just likes to mark on it. he will use his red pen until that baby runs out of ink on your papers.I've had him mark the most ridiculous things off on my papers,i always reviece the same grade on my papers, no matter what. the way he grades is unorganized. grades depend way too much on attendance.
His is very big on attendance. He rambles a lot, but if you listen to the rambling he will tell you exactly what he wants on the papers. I learned a lot in his class. I would take him again.
I'm not done with the semester yet but I think I've learned a lot from this class. He is hard on his grading and he does lecture a lot but I don't mind because he never held us back to just chat. When it's time to go it's time to go and he want's to get out of class as fast as you do :Oh full letter grade off automaticly if you're late on anything

I will say Dr. Cherry is a very weird teacher he seems as if he's a hard teacher but he's not. What do you expect you're in college and he's just trying to get you ready for what's ahead. He does mumbles but if you show up and write his notes down you will knw what he is asking for.. not the best teacher to get along but i learned a lot from him

Dr. cherry is a very strange person i might say he grades real hard on your paper and attendance is mantory if you dont come to class he will call you out in talk about you.he always tell you were he have travel.but althought if you do what he wants you will get a good grade i made a B in his class in summer II section. just come to class.....
This bitter old man needs to retire... Pretty sure he's lost his marbles and he's proud of it. Even the advisors say not to take him. He grades the papers harshly and then takes a ruler to measure your margins. He is not enjoyable.
Okay, anyone who says that Dr. Cherry is a bad teacher was either a bad student, or was looking for an easy A. I took 2 of his lit. classes and I have never had a prof. work with me so much on getting my research paper up to par. Show up, read, do the work, and you'll do well. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take Dr. Cherry, he's legit.
Dr Cherry knows his stuff. I learned alot from him. Like one rater said, you have to earn the A. If you follows his instruction and keep your fingers moving, you'll do well in his class. I look forward to taking him again.
Very tough teacher. If you have to take a lit course, take him. If you have the option of taking a lit course at a dif school, do so. I was lucky to get out with a 'B' and I think that was only because he was so preoccupied with writing papers for a research grant he wanted. In fact all semester we learned more about his grant than American Lit.
He is a horrid teacher. He has too many classes to teach so he doesn't teach any of them properly. Yet he still manages to give an essay on every test and no multiple choice. He also takes forever to grade work. We handed in a research paper halfway through the semester and I have still not received the grade and the semester has ended. RUN!
Not easy at all! Avoid Mr. Cherry if all possible. On the first day he seems nice but he isnt. His tests are so hard and you read boring stories out of the book. Avoid if you can if your not willing to study 247
Dr. Cherry was a great teacher when i had his class last spring. His work is not easy but he is willing to help you out if ASK for help. I learned a lot from taking his course.

Horrible! He doesn't actually teach anything. He pretty much just gives us assignments, and when he DOES teach us something, it makes no sense whatsoever. Then, when you ask a question, he will just repeat what he just said before. He grades us freshmen like we're professional writers. I've learned more about his personal life than anything else.
I got my Brit Lit credit on a trip around England - Dr. Cherry's last I believe. One of the finest memories of my life. Three incredible weeks - great knowledge, experience, with a kind, no nonsense professor. Thank you Dr. Cherry - you're the best!!

This guy was THE worse instructor I've ever had! He first teaches the class, and only the class, no updates in econnect like most teachers. If you have a very hectic schedule or sick, he'll look the other way. Take his class only if you absolutely need the credits.

He is definitely a tough grader and measures margins with a ruler. Attendance was mandatory, if you were tardy twice he would count it as an absent and would take points off for being absent more than once. Lectures are repetitive, you're better off learning from the book. It's not impossible to pass this class, just don't slip up... EVER!
Don't get him mad he will go on and on and complain. Don't ever expect class to end early. He's a nice man but like I said grumpy is you don't do the work. He will put you on blast in front of everyone. BOOKS ARE NEEDED AND ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO USE. You use 2 books in 1301. If you do take his class GOOD LUCK. I don't recommend him overall.
took him for English 1302 and he expects you to know everything from 1301. He hates cellphones and if he sees you just checking the time on it he will put you on the spot. He doesn't really help when you need it he just tells you that you should know it and read the books.

He's an awesome teacher! Only assigns 5 papers for the semester, and nothing more. He gives out a detailed rubric for each paper, and if you just follow the minimum, you're sure to get at least a B. Also, I never bought a text book for his class and made it out with a B.
I took Dr. Cherry for both 1301 and 1302. I stuck with him even though he was tough because I knew he would make me a better writer. He is tough and expects perfection, if you can not keep up then I would not recommend him. If you are going to get your undergrad and actually want to learn than he will help you.

He was alright until after the drop date, then he did not grade anything until a week after submission. Even after I am done with his class i don't have my final grade after about a month.
Great guy, not so good as a teacher. He is knowledgeable, kind, and at times inspirational. Although BEWARE! He is super unorganized! He won't grade anything until the end of the semester. Do things right the first time and you should be fine. He's also a tough grader so make sure to go to the writing center for extra help and credit!
I took ENGL1301 with him and in the end I did get my A, but I am not taking him again this semester because I think I would die if I did. If I were to describe him using 5 words, those words would be... BORING, UN-INSPIRATIONAL, DISORGANIZED, SCATTERBRAINED, AND SLOW. That may seem mean but hey, the truth hurts.
This is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. His first semester teaching technical writing and he is more lost than we are. He is VERY disorganized, does not grade anything on time, changes the due dates for the assignments every other week. Is not at all inspirational!! Calls his students out, gets off topic. Never taking him again.
Prefers to speak about himself, his material possessions, et cetera. If it's not in the textbook, it doesn't exist in relation to his class. He uses out of date textbooks with out of date info, and will not hear reason. Spouts ignorance when 'touching' on politics, economics, social issues. Graded attendance. Grades not given back until drop day.

Dr. is strict and expects every student to be hardworking and respectful. I noticed in engl2 that the students who had other teachers were far worse writers than who took his class. I really liked this teacher and I believe he helped me so much with my writing! If you are ready to learn, take his class. If you want to just pass by, don't.
Dr. Cherry does not enter grades until the last minute possible, we only have 1 week left, and I do not even know what grade I have. I wouldn't take him again, he isn't that organized and I would like to know where I'm standing academically. His essays aren't that difficult, go to writing center for extra credit. Attendance matters.

This professor is the worst professor in this entire world. He expect you to be expert before you can learn anything from him. Two things: show up to class and follow instructions; easy A. I took this class during the summer, so the workload was a bit overwhelming but this teacher made the class as essay as possible. He told us EXACTLY what he wanted in his papers, he gave us an outline and textbook pages with all the info we needed. It's a college course so this is fair.
DO NOT take his class, he talks about himself and his amazing achievements all the time, about his car and blabla. He takes forever to give your essays back because like he says, he does not work on weekends and he also has 175 students (very specific because he says that every class! BORING). Tough grader that does not accept your writing style.
Seems nice at first, but becomes strict and rude. I turned in my paper he saw problems with my first paragraph gave me a zero, gave me a chance to rewrite, but when I asked when will my rewrite be graded he looked at me and said idk Im to busy you shouldve written it right the first time. Currently terrified of failing despite doing all of my work. He is very unhelpful-almost none of the lectures we have directly pertain to the strenuous papers we have. He is scatterbrained and unfocused and will rant about WHO KNOWS WHAT past classes end time, then tries to rush and actually give instructions. strict on VAGUE rules, fails skippers.
Okay, he started off nice but when I turned in my research paper he personally bs me about my work and how it was not enough.. I actually have been trying in his class, and he had the guts to basically tell me that my essay was not good enough for him. I never had a problem with him until he personally bs me about my essay.. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
If you have not started your semester yet, and he is on your schedule, go to the registrar and change it. He has been teaching for 30+ years, yet he is the most unorganized professor I have ever seen. He grades everything by paper meaning he he has no electronic copies of anything. He lost an entire classes essays once.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Dr. Cherry gets off topic a lot and takes about two weeks to explain one assignment. Not to mention how hard of a grader he is, takes 3-4 weeks to actually grade papers, and puts in grades two weeks before the semester is over. He is very unorganized with his lectures and grading!IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
If you have trouble writing papers get help at the writing center. He also gives extra credit for this on each paper. I will admit he is a tough grader on those who struggle with writing. He gives you about 2-3 weeks for each paper. If you don't understand make sure you ask questions he will help you. Dont miss a lot of days or you won't pass.
8 DAYS UNTIL the END of the semester and I only know 3 of my grades! He takes forever to grade papers, OK, I know he has many students, but he should keep up with his work as well as WE, students, DO. Dr. Cherry as a professor is very knowledgeable. You can tell that he cares about his students. However, I believe that he is getting overwhelmed with all of his classes. I have not received any of my assignments back from him except my oral report, which was graded as I gave my report. Don't miss any classes, because he takes attendance seriously.

Dr. Cherry is funny, knows how to keep good vibes in the classroom... be prepare to write a lot of essays which is the purpose of English 1301(writing)... He makes students work... although he can be real busy and slow in giving grades, his class can be manageable.

Dr. Cherry started our syllabus two weeks late, thus rendering our opportunity to peer review our essays. Ive asked him if were going to peer reviews (x) essay and hed tell me, No, we dont have enough time. Our due dates were crunched in due to his procrastination to start our class assignments. Horrible teacher & grader. DO NO TAKE HIM!!!
Dr Cherry is serious about row call the first few weeks. He is a very nice man and gives you several opportunities to turn in late work and will go over things several times. If you dont pass his class its your own fault. He does go off topic at times but I thought when he did he was hilarious and enjoyed his stories
Dr. Cherry is a respected man and he even brought Pizza once but he gets off topic often and repeats some of the same things over and over again. I turned an essay (not a very good one but still wanted a grade) with the wrong MLA format he called me out for it in front of the whole class. I dropped that class that same day.
I think 8 week class is worst to take with professor Dr Grady Cherry he goes to fast and often out of topic you need to have strong English Background to take class with this professor.
When I first registered for his class I was skeptic because of his ratings, but if you do the work he really is a great professor. He's understanding when you talk to him and he tells you personal stories to keep lectures interesting. He can be strict, but it helps you a lot. Overall he is a great professor, hard grader but not impossible either.
I really could have taken this online. He would talk on and off about the subject for an hour and half in a 2 hour class and the last 30 minutes give hour assignment. It was a lot of unnecessary info. I could have saved a lot of time taking it online with a textbook! He also had us buy this textbook that we only used about 4 times in a 5 week class
I didn't really care for his class. I took it in the morning on a T/R class and should've taken it online for the simple fact that I didn't have to face his repetitive nature and the countless times he would go off track. While he is a good professor and means well, he needs to stop and think before continuing, especially towards politics.
Since going online, I've boosted Dr. Cherry to a 5 out of 5. He's a great professor (or would it be a doctor?), but I'm a terrible student and have basically trolled him with a handful of emails, and anyone who can put up with that and not get angry deserves some credit. I still don't know my grade though. Good guy, though
By far the worst professor I've ever had in college. Preaches about turning stuff in on time but doesn't put your grades into black board till the last week of the semester. Re- teaches the same stuff every class so you really don't learn anything new. Grades unreasonably hard. I'll drop out of college before I take him again for any class.
Honestly, he is so old school, wants hard copies of all your essays. He also repeats himself a million times at class. His grading is though so do not expect to get a good grade if you do not work the way he wants.
Do not take this teacher! Unfortunately, because f the virus, I was not able to take this class in person, but still, it was horrible. He never responds to emails in time, and he also posts grades very last minute. His instructions for some assignments weren't clear and got mad when I asked him.
Professor Cherry was one of the most difficult teachers I've dealt with. I'm having to take this course online due to the pandemic, which based on reading other reviews, I am grateful for. He is a VERY hard grader. Most of the instructions are not very clear, and navigating the course work is very confusing. His grading schedule is rediculous.
There was quite an amount of homework some weeks but usually not *too* bad. Simple and straight to the point feedback, wasnt confusing. He let us know exactly what he wanted and what to avoid.
Dr. Cherry's class is very straight forward. He was great with reminders on due dates. The reading assignments are not graded, but to prepare you for the essays. I personally never did them, but I did make sure to review the videos in order to help write my essays. The Discussion Boards are easy. If you do the work, you will do great.
