I didn't like this teacher very much at all. He spent two whole class periods making fun of Christianity. I don't understand how that has anything to do with children's literature. His discussions on the books were alright, but extremely boring. His tests are essay exams, and aren't too hard. He is pretty nice and helpful, but extremely boring.
He was fantastic, engaging, and interesting. I'm thinking of taking him again for another class.
Very good professor. One of the best I've had as an English Major!
I definitely recommend this professor for English majors. His demands are reasonable, his exams relatively straightforward, his lectures interesting and engaging. Three essays and an exam. He's a fair grader, a highly possible A with a lot of satisfaction afterward. He sincerely wants his students to learn. Excellent professor!!
Great professor, definitely! The quip about his lecture on religion is ludicrous. He spoke the most about it with post-secularism, and his examples clarified a lot of confusion. He does a great job breaking down the aspects of criticism and letting us build ourselves from the fundamentals. I'm doing well as a Freshman, so no pity to the whiner.
Best class I've taken in college.
Amazing class, actually worthy of being called college-level teaching. Classroom environment is excellent, the lectures always spanned from interesting to fascinating, actually felt capable of using the techniques taught by the end of the class. Wish it hadn't ended. Highly recommended!
Great professor!! It's always enjoyable to take a class where the teacher ACTUALLY enjoys the subject they teach and it shows! Easy tests & essays if you read the texts and attend class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking Children's Lit w/ him! Did you know he is writing his own Children's book?!
Great class. Lots of fun. Attendence is required or you will miss out on quizzes and attendence helps your overall grade. Excellent discussions. You can tell that he cares about the subject and his students. Always has an open mind during discussions. Helpful and easy to communicate with. I highly recommend this class or this professor.
This professor has been one of my favorites if not my favorite professor at TSU. I would highly recommend this class for any student attending Texas State University. Attendance is mandatory mostly, but his lectures are well crafted and engaging for all students. Don't miss out on an opportunity to take a class with such a fantastic professor.
Easy class, interesting. Nice professor, easy to work with, fun.
Great class! My word of advice is to read all the books (we read about 7 children's books) and come to class. If you do those two things, you are sure to make an A. He does keep attendance records but that only helps you if you are on the boarder line at the end of the semester. We take quizes over the readings, so READ!
Amazing class, I'm not an English major but it was by far one of my favorite classes. Make sure you read the children's book when stated in the syllabus, and attend class so you do not miss quizzes(easy quizzes if you read) great teacher who actually is passionate about what he teachers. I highly recommend this class for anyone
Fun and interesting class.
Right, So I had WW for 3385, he was great. He is VERY passionate in his craft. I highly, highly recommend. He truly loves what he does, and it shines through.
Awesome teacher. hes very passionate. go to every class. and take tons of notes (i wrote every word he said) and it helped when it came to writing the papers. also he gives quizzes that can easily be passed if you just read the texts...which are childrens books so that doesn't take long at all. beware you WILL develop a mind crush on this guy ;)
Wonderful professor, really knows his stuff. His class is interesting and really improved my overall knowledge and writing skills. However, he tends to get on his soapbox once in a while about certain issues. If you are easily offended, his Chidlren's Lit class it not for you.
He is an awesome teacher!! He really knows what he is talking about and makes class interesting. It is crucial that you read all the texts necessary for class but if you do, you'll do great! He is very helpful and always willing to answer questions and help in anyway! I would definitely recommend taking him! One of the best professors I have had!
Professor Wend-Walker is very knowledgeable and everything he lectured on was interesting. I will say that he is a bit biased when discussing religions and tends to bash certain religions and the people who follow them. Overall, he's an excellent professor and I will definitely take him again if the opportunity arises.
Wend-Walker makes class a joy! I was concerned prior to taking this class, but Wend-Walker really explains theory well and gives opportunities to ask questions. The reading material was wonderful as well, he selects very interesting novels! Attendance is mandatory, but it's fun! So take him and attend!
He made class fun and interesting; held my attention, which is difficult to do. Would definitely take one of his classes again.
Took Children's Lit. from Wend-Walker. He was wonderful. He has a full and thorough knowledge of the subject, he's open minded and very interesting. The subject is harder than you might think, but really fun and I feel I learned so much.
I love this professor. He is very clear and is available during office hours to explain things. He's passionate about his teaching, which makes you passionate about learning. Please, please, please take him and make sure to LISTEN. It's a great class. He's a wonderful professor, and probably my favorite one so far!
What a wonderful professor! He is brilliant and passionate about what he teaches. You can get so much out of the class if you LISTEN to him! Getting an 'A' was no problem for me, I enjoyed the essays and tests were straightforward. This was by far my most enjoyable class. I'll miss him :(
The texts are definitely enjoyable and much easier to keep up with reading levels than other Lit classes so read them!!! He quizzes right out of the texts. Just pay attention to lectures and know the correctly spelled authors and illustrators and you'll do great. Oh and make your essays argumentative:) Class will be interesting!
Great Teacher! Made going to class fun and enjoyable! If you listen to what he said, read the texts, and come to class, you can EASILY make an A! Would/will refer this class to every one of my friends!
Says exactly what he wants and makes everything clear while maintaining a good sense of humor. Highly recommend any class he's teaching.
As long as you read and stay with the syallabus you'll pass. I absolutely loved his class! He kept things interesting and always had good ways of explaining things!
While the class can *seem* daunting, his assignments, tests, and grading reflect his understanding that most students will not be 100% into everything they read and may fall behind from time to time. This is a very informative class and an easy B and mildly challenging A (just from reading volume). A definite win for students.
The class was interesting. He clarifies everything and encourages discussion. He keeps your interest. The reading material is simple and there are quizzes on almost all of the books. If you read, come to class, and take notes then there is no reason for you to not get an A!
This was a really fun and relatively easy class. His lectures are very entertaining and I would recommend taking alot of notes. He is a very intelligent professor and you can learn alot in his class. He is definitely one of the smartest and one of the best professors at Texas State.
He is a great professor that uses powerpoints and handouts. There is a lot of reading and quizzes, but they are very easy if you read. He is picky about his essays, so make sure to put in work for those. Tests are all write-in answers. Overall, easy but requires work. Plus, he has good looks and an awesome accent!
I LOVE HIM! He is so enthusiastic and is very clear and organized with his lectures. Also, who doesn't want to listen to an Australian accent all day?! If you have English classes to take I highly suggest him for Children's Lit. Read kid books and discuss them as adults! I highly recommend him.
He is really great. I don't want to say the class was easy but it's easy if you go to class, do the reading, and have an open mind. He's always willing to help you, he's very informative, and his lectures are not in the least bit boring! Overall if you are on the fence to take his classes do it, he is by far one of the best professors I've had!
Absolutely loved him! His lectures are always interesting, and very group discussion like. He's easy to talk to, very clear, and not intimidating! He may voice his opinions in class but he encourages you to voice yours as well and respects everyone's thoughts and opinions. Best professor at Texas state.
A great professor! He is knowledgeable and his classes are interesting and fun. The books and texts he incorporates are interesting, good reads and he introduces fresh perspectives on them. He respects if you work hard, encourages opinions and class discussion. You do have to work. Will definitely take him again if the opportunity arises.
Prof Wend-Walker is an excellent teacher: he knows his stuff and sincerely wants everyone to succeed. go to class, take notes on discussions, and read the texts (not just summaries, he pulls questions directly from sometimes vague quotes) and you'll absolutely get an A. Also, he's easy to talk to, and a very cool dude.
Prof. WW is a gift! He colours the class with broad discussion and allows students to expand on ideas and work through thoughts of the books discussed. He is a stickler for attendance and might throw in a quiz on days too many miss, so don't. He is open, honest, and willing to listen when you have questions. Do the reading, discuss, pass... simple!
Dr. Walker is a great teacher with a lot of experience. You need to read the novels because he gives short quizzes on all of them. It is easy if you show up and read! You will have a short in-class essay on midterm and another essay to submit. The final will also have a short essay. Do not put off reading and you will be able to keep up!
Super amazing prof. Is very down to earth and he treats students like they're adults. Gives very good feedback on papers & opens you to so many new ideas. Extremely charismatic and is very open to listen to any ideas given.
He was an amazing professor and is real. He is the only teacher that has actually inspired me to write well about things I don't care about. I would take him again for sure. All of the books he chose were interesting and had deep concepts that were pretty easy to understand through children's literature. Take him for sure if you can.
Wonderful and very interesting professor. He gave you all you needed to pass the class. He was not difficult but expected the best out of his students. When it came to writing assignments he graded you more so on the content rather than the technical aspects and would still write you short sweet to the point notes to help you better your writing.
I loved having this professor so much I signed up for another one of his classes next semester. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and he strives to make sure every student has the means of understanding and passing his classes.
Ok, ya'll listen up! Do yourselves a HUGE favor and sign up for one of Prof. Walker's classes immediately! He ensures that your opinion is heard and respected from the get- go. He is naturally humorous and free- spirited, yet knows when to be serious. Plus, class is much more enjoyable listening to his Aussie accent. P.S. Ask about his traveling!
This class is intellectually stimulating, you will definitely learn a lot about the genre. Beware of the pop quizzes! You're best bet is to keep up or read ahead of time in order to ace the quizzes. The books used for this class are cheap so invest in them. Great prof. You will have to put in work (essays) for a good grade but it isn't difficult.
Great prof. Will help if you ask for it. Pop quizzes can be a doozie if you don't read before hand so make sure you do that. Put in work for the essays. He gives great feedback and provides great lectures if you participate. I also loved the majority of the books. Work hard for the grade you want!
This class was not too hard but he was extremely vague on what he wanted in the exams. If you don't like vague DON'T TAKE HIM. Other than that he was okay
Graeme was my favorite English teacher by far! He knows what he is talking about, and gives helpful feedback when grading essays. I took him for Children's Lit and Adolescent Lit. We had a lot of class discussion. There were only 2 exams, & 2-4 essays. The essays were interesting and fun to write. If you don't take his class, you're missing out!!!
I really loved his class but you do have to read the books. Much of the lecture material is not tested on(such as random information) but as long as you know the material and actually work on your papers you can easily get an A. Definietly going to try to take him again :)
He was vague. He gave exams that he knew no one would be able to finish: his excuse? he was experimenting. Want feedback on your papers? Good luck. He goes off on tangents and makes jokes that aren't funny. He will also give you inaccurate information about certain cultures, I know because he did that with my culture. Didn't learn much; easy class.
Must attend class in order to pass because he gives a quiz on the readings every week and doesn't tell you what day he's giving it. These quizzes are a big part of your grade. He's a good teacher; he's funny and cool. The texts are overwhelming though. Readings are easy if you're in Children's Lit. Thought I would surely fail, but passed (B+).
Attendance isn't required, but is completely necessary to pass this class. Not only because of pop quizzes, but because the in-class discussions of children's lit is what really makes tests passable. Show up, do your work and there's no reason you can't get an A, as he is really helpful as far as what to study for his exams.
I really enjoyed children's lit. Going to class and reading is necessary to pass, so don't think that you'll get by if you skip. My class was 50 minutes. It wasn't excruciating at all. Dr. Wend-Walker was VERY helpful, and is available during his office hours for any concerns.
Seemed to repeat the same information every lecture. Was an okay teacher, but the essays and exams were difficult. Clear instructions, then graded harshly. Final exam was mostly memorizing random quotes from all of the assigned reading material- ridiculous.
One of the best professors I've had at Texas State. Has in depth lectures, discussions and very thorough on his reviews. Get ready for alot of reading but it's manageable. Coolest Aussie around.
the assigned reading for this class isn't bad, a few picture books and 3 small chapter books. You have a quiz every week, a midterm, midterm essay, major essay, and a final. This class is extremely boring and the professor goes on tangents on certain topics. If I had to take a different English course I would have. This class was very enjoyable.
ENGL 3385 S16. Glad I took this class. He is funny and the powerpoint presentations were helpful but you still have to read. If you don't read you will be behind. The books were very good, most were easy reads. He is clear in grading criteria. This was one of my favorite classes I've taken. The final was a bit hard.
Cool guy and pretty straight forward with his expectations. The tests are tough, but only if you are not a good writer and haven't done any of the readings. I skipped a ton of classes and had a bunch of quiz zeroes, but still managed a B. He's a fair grader, you just have to show your "smarts." Know everything about your books and you'll do fine.
3rd time I've taken him he's a great professor, he's really approachable and I really enjoy his lectures. Awesome reading list & Quizzes on every book were random so come to class! Essays were reasonable and his tests are a doozy if you don't read. Only complaint was the group I had made him waste class time on talks not related to books or lecture
Prof. was fantastic! You get to read some awesome books, and the pop quizzes, although they do not count much, can most definitely be a factor in whether you get an "A" or "B"... so show up! His lectures are worth it alone. I've never laughed as much as in this class. And his accent is pretty nice to listen to so yeah... Highly recommend!
Dr. Wend-Walker is by far the best English professor I have had the chance to take. He does require a fair amount of reading, but he picks very good books with great story lines. He takes the time to know his students and grades very accurately and will do all he can to make sure you succeed. If he had another course available I would take him.
He is a great professor, very likable. His lectures can be very off topic and scatter-brained, and his expectations for papers can be a bit ambiguous. Make sure you read the assigned reading, or you will not pass. I took him for young adult literature, we focused on sci-fi and fantasy genres and how they apply to YA. We also discussed what it means to be a young adult, and the criteria for YA lit. Very interesting, and he is obviously passionate and well-read. We had a presentation on one of the assigned books, mid-term essay, and a final research paper. He is a tough grader, and that seems to come out of nowhere because he doesn't discuss how he plans to grade or his rubric for grading, and his prompts were obviously composed last minute, which was disappointing because I figured he would have out a little more thought into them. He speaks very quickly and usually has to cram information that may or may not be applicable or required information, but is either interesting to him or helpful with your writing (I suggest recording his classes and titling the recording so you can revisit when writing your assignments). I would certainly take him again, because I am an advanced writer and enjoy reading- if you are not/do not, this class may be tough for you.
Dr. Wend-Walker is the best English professor I have had! He makes class fun and encourages all of his students to participate in topics that are arising throughout the world. The essay topics can be a bit confusing, but just ask him to clarify and he will be glad to help. He is such a sweet man with the cutest accent eversuch a great Aussie, too.
First off, he is super nice and understanding. He actually cares about you and your grade. His lectures tend to get off track a bit, but are very informative and fun. He is not a tough grader, but you do need to put in effort to get a good grade. The material he picks for essays and other assignments are very interesting , and genuinely fun.
Dr. Wend-Walker is a fabulous professor. You do a LOT of reading in his classes (I took him for YA lit) but he picks great books. If you don't read, though, you'll likely fail the exams/essays; you can't skate by off of summaries for this class. He gets a little off topic during lectures but they're still great discussions, I highly recommend him.
Great professor. Took him for 3301 and 3386. He gets a bit off-topic at times, but is very educated and a very approachable professor. Some people say he's a tough grader, but I never got lower than an A on any of his papers. Great reading list, too. If I could, I'd take him for another class.
Wend-Walker is a great professor even if he gets off-topic at times. While there is no textbook, you do have to buy multiple YA novels. You read about a book a week but the quizzes aren't hard. Discussions are usually really fun and you get to learn about some YA history!
Overall a wonderful person. The lectures were always interesting and never had you dozing off. The books for children's literature weren't long at all. If you forget to read prior you can get the whole book or majority in before class. Pop quizzes are easy and occur after ever reading. I chose to take this professor again. 100% recommend!
He is THE best teacher I've ever had. He is not only really funny but he actually cares about the class. He makes reading and learning about the children's books fun and exciting. I would highly recommend taking him.
Really cool guy, participate in class and you should be just fine. 10/10 would recommend taking another one of his lectures
Take his class! He is a knowledgeable and also understanding and caring. If you do the readings and turn in every assignment you should do well. It helps to attend class but it isnt mandatory in order to pass.
Wonderful, Insightful and knowledgeable Professor! Read all the material and the final will be easy. Take him hes awesome!
He's nice enough, but he goes off on tangents and spends too much time on irrelevant stuff. read the books/do the work and you'll be fine but he can be kinda petty with his tests. He even tells you that he makes the test extra long so that you can't finish early. mostly lectures, doesn't ask if anyone likes the books or really let you respond much.
His adolescencent lit class was interesting and not boring at all. he has real conversation about the books he chooses instead of having us do busy work or powerpoint in class. your grade is made up of a mid term, mid semester essay, final, final essay and then however many reading reports he sends out which is usually 1 over every book you read
I took Children's Literature with Professor Wend-Walker and I really loved the course. Lots of lectures but he makes it enjoyable, he's a funny guy and has a great accent. Easy grader, just do your readings and participate and you'll have an A!
Best professor Ive ever had! I was so stressed taking my first summer class, but he made it so easy and fun! I took childrens literature and do not regret any second! Ive learned so much and saw such a different perspective on books in general. 10/10 recommend taking Dr. Wend-walker!
Best professor ever. He is funny and engaging, and the "lectures" are really student led discussions and he jumps in on them. Very meaningful experience, he clearly cares about his students and is a wonderful person. Loved taking this class, you will not regret it, in fact you'll look forward to going to class!
Dr. Graeme is an amazing professor. His class is an easy A as long as you keep up with all the reading. He is knowledgeable about adolescent literature and gives great book suggestions. Worth taking him!
One of my absolute favorite professors. I took Professor Walker's Children's Lit. class, and he is absolutely hilarious, and will make you excited to come to class. Class is calm and anxiety free, I truly cannot brag enough about this class, TAKE HIS CLASSES! So many meaningful things to learn, in such a fun environment with a passionate teacher .
Professor Walker is amazing! He is obviously passionate and knowledgeable in his field. His expectations are straightforward and easy to follow. Take his class!
He is very passionate and loves what he teaches. He brings up topics and points of view to make you think, but I do feel that class discussion tends to lean more towards the specific line of thought he agrees with as opposed to having open discussions on presented topics. Readings were ok, nothing I became passionate about. Good class.
He was extremely picky with essays but assignments he was easy on. He had lots of feedback, but it was a little obsessive. He is a good caring professor. He made the class fun, and we got to watch movies!!!
His video lectures were great as he spoke about very interesting topics. Towards the middle of the semester, we were reading about a novel a week. Other than that, the few tests and quizzes were easy. Just be sure to keep up with the readings and watch most of his videos. Very sweet guy and great teacher. Very caring.
Gave us 2-3 assignments weekly, a midterm essay, and a project throughout the semester. He's a personable guy who obviously loves literature and his job. Has quite the potty mouth, if you're okay with that. Attendance was mandatory through a code but he's not rude about it. Doesn't warn you when readings are due, so pay attention to syllabus.
Very thorough on instructions for the assignments and essays, but communication was difficult and he could be surprisingly rude. As long as you keep up with readings and stay on top of writing assignments the class isn't really hard, but I wouldn't take another class with him just because of how cold and unhelpful talking with him was.
Lots of assignments with not a lot of time to complete them, however, they are not difficult, you just have to actually read or watch the material to do well. Essays were explained well and graded fairly. Class was online so never talked to him outside of email, but he was very lenient.
I took Adolescent Lit over the summer and I thought the class assignments were structured fairly. Lots of reading! Lol. The book selection is good though and the word minimums are reasonable. Just need to sit and get to work, make sure to have a bright light somewhere to help keep your focus. Professor is also understanding and open to help you. :)
I gotta say, it was unfair to keep lecture notes closed until 12 pm and then have them due at 12 pm too. Just me? Or does the middle of the day to turn in and review lecture notes for an online class just not make sense? I hope this changes for the future. Good luck to yall! Y'all got it.
This class is great! He communicates really well and is passionate about the subject. There is a lot of reading but honestly you can get away with not reading everything, still the selections are good. He gives such good feedback on essays and will go into detail even more if you ask. The best asynchronous class I've taken.
He's a good professor, but gives way too much homework. basically had to read a whole chapter book each week and had 2-3 assignments on it as well, which required 3 responses on a discussion post each. Multiple essays. Good feedback, though, and offered the opportunity to receive credit for late assignments.
