he's a total idiot n when he lectures or writing stuffs on the board it's like he's doing his own work, not 'teaching'. just study all the sample tests he gave before each exam, u'll be ok, after all, forget this guy if u wana learn something
I did not understand a single thing in the class. I agree with the other person. He does not teach. If you study off of his review you'll be fine.
This professor sucks.. you can not understand a single thing he is trying to teach... but like the others said, as long as you study his sample test, you will be able to get a good grade, but other than that, he sucks...
This professor does pretty well explaining and actually slows down if you ask him to explain something again, which is how every professor should be. His sample tests are awsome since you can study the problems and know what to expect. He even encourages everyone to sign for math9t tutoring with him
Good Instructor. Like the class.
Prepare to teach yourself the material. He's a real smart guy, but he struggles to teach the concepts well. But, he does make up for it by giving real easy tests and practice exams that are the same as the test. Math170 is by far easier than Math150 in my opinion. I DO recommend this teacher. Easy A
I would not recommend anyone to take Dr. Chalmers. He is not an efficient teacher, if you take him, you will pretty much have to teach yourself the subject and hope for a good grade and understanding of the subject. I still managed to get a B, but it was not easy!
I agree with most students. This he knows his stuff, but has trouble explaining the subject to the class. Get toutering and study his practice test. If you stick to this you'll be able to pass the class.
it's pretty difficult to follow along with his lectures in the beginning because he's talking to the board 90% of the time but after a while you'll get used to it. he's very nice and easy going. its open EVERYTHING on quizzes and lets you use one 4x6 index card cheat sheet on every test.easy prof. easy class.good cheat sheets will get you that A/B!
He is hard to understand when it comes to his lectures because he goes fast...however, he is very easy because his practice tests are almost identical to his study sheets and on top of that, he lets you use a index card as a cheat sheet...very easy!
the guy is super smart, got a phd from berkely, but he really cant teach that well, he expects students to have read the material b4 class and know it well, but his tests are really easy if u study his practice tests like everyone said. easy A or B
Chalmers is great. i took math 80 three times and dropped every time. then i took chalmers during the summer and passed with a B! i didn't even take the final. his lectures are horrible, he's boring and talks to the board, but if you get the study-guide to the test, it is the EXACT TEST but with different numbers. just study that and you'll pass.
omg. does he even kno he is teaching a class?!?
very boring but he didn't give ANY homework.
absolutely not helpful, laughs to himself while lecturing... but the class has no idea what is so funny. doesn't speak to the class... writes on the board as if he is only one there.
I didn't really like him. He acted like he was too good to answer any questions students asked.
ok well i took once like 2 years ago, anyway, this dude sucks, he is soooo boring, that even looking at him makes you want to sleep in class, leave early, or not even go at all. He is dull, and doesn't make class fun. DO NOT TAKE HIM. if you already are, i
i dont think he knows how to explain stuff very well, even though hes doctor
he is not too good of a teach at all
he is the best math teacher.
Not helpful, and while you might get an A if you're good at math, it won't be because he explained anything to you. He never gave homework, but he also based all the grades on tests. Best of luck if you've got to take his calss. Do your best and get outside help!
Woow! He is not helpful at all. Every time I asked a question he never asnwered it so that it was clear. You really need to put in many hours in the math lab to understand the material.
He is the worst teacher in the world. He is so boring, does not answer any of the questions you ask him. Math is my favorite subject after taking his class im not so sure. If you want to do good in this class you will need to get help from the lab.
yes, he's the most boring teacher in the world. but he's also very blind. find a few ways to help yourself out during his tests, which actually aren't that hard. this is coming from someone who isn't good in math. =) i think he gives a lot of partial credit on his tests which definitely helps.
Believe everything you read. He is horrible.
Dr. Chalmers is boring, i agree on that, but i learned to appreciate him during the course of the class. I'm the kind of person who likes to read the textbook (after all, you do pay for it) and i noticed that when he explained a concept that he taught you a much easier way of figuring things out, opposed to the textbook. Plus, he teaches you a lo
he is a good math teacher.
Awful!
he never comes prepared for lecture. In my class everyone is sleeping. He is a nice person but he doesn't know how teach. he jumps from one place to other. Part of the fault relies on students because they don't ask questions. He gives a lot of group which i don't mind but if you don't understand what he taught how can u do ur work
very good at teaching. easy to learn from. he does a little fast, but just ask a Q and he will go a head and stop!... he is Great! (easy with hmwk, and with test/ final!)
I heard the course wasn't so bad if you take it in Summer, or if you have an easy schedule aside from this class. But unless you come to class with a lot of questions already prepared to ask (which he is always willing answer), you may be in trouble. His grading is fairly lenient, but the material itself isn't easy at all.
horrible lecture, don't take him. you will regret it
Actually, no matter he is a bad teacher, he tells u what he will test u and just change no from previous tests, its is a good class if u ar just planning to get a grade, but not to understd math. I got an A becos of that and he allows u to use a flashcard in tests
Stereo typical book smarts. He is brilliant, but he cannot teach. He will basically breeze through each chapter then pass out practice exams. Your key to success is doing the practice exams and practice with similar book problems. He allows notes on 3x5 index cards and (reasonably) expects you to show details on your work.
ALRIGHT PROFFESOR. WOILDN'T RECOMEND IF YOU DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT MATH. I WAS OK WITH MATH N KINDA OF TEACHING MY SELF. I PASSED MATH 80 A W/ A B. UM GONA TAKE MTH 80 B WITH IM IN THE FALL 07'. I KNOW I'LL PASS ATYLEAST W/ A C. HIS TESTY ARE EASY BECAUSE HE ALLOWS 3X5 CARDS AND GIVES ALMOST EXACT PRACTICE TEST. HE WILL ALWAYS ANSWER A QUES.
A lot of people say he is boring. I agree but you wil cruise past the class. Of course you have to study for the class. Dun expect answers to fall on your table. Gotta work for it. I got an A. Ok, it is easy to get A if u study for the class.
I'm a math major, IMO, he's a brilliant statistician...is boring at times, but very thorough in his lectures... learned a great deal, would recommend to a friend
He is boring but very smart teacher. This class is extremely easy... If you study past exams which he gives you before the test, then you will be fine. If you have any questions or you dont get the concepts, why dont you go to his office and ask?
When you ask him a question he doesn't answer it and gets angry or frustrated. Teaches/lectures to the board. Doesn't ask there students if were understanding it he just goes on by himself. Were all just lost trying to write down everything hes writing on the board that doesn't even make sense.Doesn't even use the same book as us.Worst teacher ever
He is smart, easy class....but soooooooooo boring!!!! i hate going to that class!!! he talks like the guy from red eye/ clear eyes commercial.
He is soo boring. it is an easy class.but he doesnt even look like hes talking to the students. he talks to himself. and makes dum jokes to himself that are not funny. you have to have the book and the tests are not that bad. i dont recommend him at all
He's definitely intelligent and a nice prof, but for the love of God he CANNOT teach! I was pretty much teaching myself the entire semester that the class might as well have been categorized as semi-independent. He lectures to himself wherein he puts a problem on the board, and then turns his back and works it out without explaining to the class.
Honestly,horrible.Do not take him!
He is the worst teacher. He knows the stuff, but cannot teach it. He so boring. Please don't take his class, unless you are super smart math student & not need instructor to explain to you.
He can be cold and monotonous, but he's an easy guy to deal with. He talks for hours on end, and will write excessively on the board so taking notes is essential. His tests aren't too hard, but be prepared, and be sure to study the study guide because it's pretty much the same thing. I would take him.
He is an exellent teacher but does not go into detail when explaining a problem. Yes, he lacks personality and his lectures tend to be boring but beneficial. If you are comfortable with math you should definately take his class. He drops your lowest test scores and replaces your grade with your highest test score. He allows you to use a calculator.
The teacher knows the material and his exams are easy. He gives plenty of chances to improve students' grades. If I had to take another math, I'd take him again!
cOol prof! very considerate.
easy class. prof highly recommended.
Well from MY experience in his TRIG class dont take him unless you can learn by your self. I literally stopped taking notes as they were completely useless. plus mistakes all the time. I had to teach my self using math websites, book and youtube. BUT His study guides are almost equivalent to the test so if you can learn whats on the guide your good
He is the easiest teacher you'll ever have. He gives the answers to the test a session before and he lets you use a notecard. Just paste those answers on the notecard with the equations. He just randomly rambles, so you Dont really know what he's teaching on, its hard to understand. if you Excell in self-teaching, then take his class, if not, dont.
I HAD MATH 80A AND HE IS NOT A GOOD TEACHER... ON MY EXPERIENCE ONCE I WAS ASKING A QUESTION AND HE DID WANTED TO EXPLAING THE METHOD BECAUSE WAS LONG. HE IS THE WORST TEACHER. ALSO I DIDNT GET HIS WRITTING. THE GOOD THING IS THE STUDY GIDES ARE SIMILAR TO THE EXAM. I PASS IT WITH A C. BECAUSE OF THE BOOK AND YOUTUBE WHAT IS BETTER THAT HIM...
Do not take him for any section of math!!! I didn't take a single note all semester and had to teach myself and spend hours upon hours in the math lab. He may be a smart person, but is not meant to be a teacher. he's very unorganized in his lectures and is always making mistakes. HORRIBLE!!!
Great teacher for Calc 2
i did not know what he was talking about. i had to learn on my own, but dropped before getting a W
lectures dont help. but you get 1 note card of notes per exam. Quizzes you can use notes. He is picky grader. but gives partial credit. he is approachable. Book isnt great. He never misses. If you do a gd notecard you can at least get a C on the test. he gives plenty partial credit. its still a difficult subject. Enter at your own risk.
Terrible teacher needs to retire quick. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Very boring you will need to teach yourself. if u have to take his class just make a very good card with notes for the exam you will do good he just changes the #'s. I would not recommend to a friend. Has old notes from 2003 and old book notes very unorganized. He is not good w ques
OMG ! im actually sitting in his class now in a summer school session & i cant believe that he has a license to teach still !!!! 95 percent of the class doesnt even know what hes talking about & when we ask him questions he gets upset . worst course ever ! i will never recommend him to anyone , i'd rather take another semi-indpendent course
Never again I will take this teacher. Super boring and has no idea what he is talking about. I didn't learn anything form him. I had to do it all on my own.
He's seriously the best to take for CALC II. Three tests, 1 make up test, a pre-final that could only help you, and a final. If you mess up on the quizzes, 10% of the next test replaces the grade on the quiz. Ex, get a 4/10 on a quiz but a 90/100 on the next test, your grade on the quiz becomes 9/10. He can't teach though so read the textbook.
Worse teacher ever! His teaching pattern is all wrong. He wouldn't name the topics, nor would he teach us the formulas. He literally wrote a problem up, solved it, and assumed we understod him, and when he was asked for help, he would get impatient and interrupt the student while also not answering the question. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! SAVE YOUR GPA!!!
although he is smart and knows what he is doing, his teaching style is somewhat difficult to follow.
Very difficult to understand his lectures.
I seriously wish Prof. Leon had done Math 240 this semester. Chalmers is the absolute worst! He has no idea what he's doing in class. Very knowledgeable man, but he should not be teaching this course.
His lecture is not very organized. Doesn't answer questions well. Often gets sidetracked. His writing is hardly legible, which isn't a good thing. Spent most of my time studying from the book.
Gives 3 quizzes, 3 tests, One makeup test, one pre final and one final. The makeup test is to replace a lower test. Lets you use notes on quizzes. On test he lets you use 1 3x5 card. On final 2 3x5 cards. DO ALL OF THE Groupwork and hw for points. They are worth 2 pts each. they add up! Fair grader. Lecture is confusing. bad at answering questions
Lectures are very hard to follow, and his monotone voice will put you to sleep. I would never recommend this teacher.
I like his teaching style, lectures -> examples to make it easy for understanding. Make sure to write down everything from his lectures and you would be doing good in the class. Very easy on grading. Practice the sample test and quiz on his website before the real test. I got an A in Summer 2011 without taking the final at all (took prefinal)
Take down all the notes, do all the sample tests and you'll get an easy A in his class.
HORRIBLE TEACHER DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! he cannot teach for his life very unorganized and just sucks!DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Took him for Differentials, the subject is somewhat easy but the the thing is that he is a professor who does not know how to teach. Most of my friends were lost too and we all had to learn the material straight from the book so if your taking him be prepared to learn it on your own.
I was affraid of this class before it started. However professor Chalmers really made the subject easy. Take good notes, do the study guides and ask questions. You will do fine. I got an A in his class over the summer.
RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS WHO HAD TAKEN AP CALC AB . IF NOT YOU ARE GOING TO STRUGGLE. AND YOU ARE GOING TO WHEN YOU GO TO CALC II. HE'S A GREAT GUY AND IF YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF YOU'LL DO FINE. BUT IF NOT, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
his class is super easy. i like this class because i already knew the material because come it was math 40. that's like elementary math. i took that class because i did bad on my placement test. So i guess that's why i did good on his class. and plus he let us a note card on the test.
This class can be easy yet challenging at the same time. You have to pretty much teach yourself most of the time, but if youre someone like me, who has taken calc before, it'll be do-able. Instead of teaching how to solve problems, he teaches the theories behind them.
Pretty cool professor! His lectures are useless, but the tests and group work is really easy. I recommend taking him but attending tutoring to understand the calculus. He is the easiest calculus instructor at Cerritos.
He doesn't know how to teach.do NOT take him.I'm a Mathematics major and I love math but he made me hate my favorite subject. It was a torture going to this class.
This professor did not help me when I would ask him to explain. e would get bothered and annoyed when you asked him questions. He did not explain things in a way for us to understand.
Interesting professor. He instructs the material and also integrates arguments into the examples and derivations he does to prove the theories or methods. Very knowledgeable.
Goes 100 miles an hour. Jumps from one point to another without specifying. Notes are like hyroglifics. Will randomly slow down. Talks like he's teaching a post doc class. Will mess up from time to time. If you cannot self teach statistics, YOU WILL FAIL THIS CLASS. Stats is not an easy subject. Grading is very tough. Too much group work.
Mr. Chalmers is a difficult teacher. To pass his class, make sure you understand how to do his homework assignments. Mr. Chalmers's class is fast paced and you need to be a fast learner if you want to do well. Which is why you should NEVER skip class.
He was a tough teacher but if you do your work and really try to learn yourself you can pass the class. I slacked off a bit so i got a passing grade but i could have done better. He gives enough resources and is a good professor
Would not recommend unless you're able to teach yourself material from the book. He's very quiet and goes very fast.
He is unclear about the topics. Although his tests are usually an exact replica of the sample papers. Do all the group works and home works as they will definitely raise your grade. Take his class if you can teach yourself.
A great teacher for those who can do some work on their own. I could not hear him or see the board because I sat in the back of the class. (The class was full). When I asked for help I received it and I did a great job. Now I can be somewhat independent in math.
You might as well take online classes with this professor. If your into independent studying then this class for you, if you not then do not take his class. Low talker and does not explain material well. He basically reads out from the book instead of actually teaching it. Don't be surprised if your finding yourself spending more time with tutors.
In what ever mind you are in pleas do not take this professor. He knows the material but he does the worst job explaining it. He is also very fast and not clear. He gets angry when students ask questions and slow down. I thought I could do it on my own but that didn't work out to well.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Writes about 5 pages of notes per day, but you'll be lost. Does not explain or interact with the class. What a joke
Best teacher if you're bad at math, go to the math lab, and he provides sample tests you can print out with the answers. 1 note card both sides are allowed on the first three tests, on pre-final and final 2 notecards both sides, other teachers don't allow this. I was on the cusp of a C with a high D, and he "nudged" me to a C. Very lenient grader!
He deducts points if you don't do things his way and write down in the exact same method as he solves.
he gives 3 test all worth 100 points and prefinal and a final. However if you do good in the beginning you would not have to take the final towards the end. To me he did not explain well but I worked myself to earn that A and I actually googled and asked him questions after class. If your super super slow in math you shouldn't take him.
Lectures in monotone which is extremely boring! Stats is difficult, his tone made it so hard to stay focused & I found myself lost most of the time. Lecture was also so confusing . A few students had their afternoon naps during class. Attended office hrs to get more help & most of his feed back was "this is something you should already know" .
This class is extremely difficult for people who aren't good at math to begin with. I'm a freshman who got placed here even though I failed math my senior year. He talks slow, but his notes go by so fast which makes the class even more difficult. He doesn't give a lot of HW, mostly group work. He allows you to use an index card for quizzes/tests.
Horrible professor
The grade is based on 3 exams and a final. He a "pre-final" which includes all material from the semester in a multiple choice format and a final which covers the same material but it all in a written format. Like your prefinal score? You're done with the class. Expect to do a lot of self-studying because homework is not mandatory, so procrastination is prone to happen. Good Luck.
Very nice and humble professor. he will try his best to pass everybody. he has a lot of consideration. there is not a lot of work to do. just study and pass the exams.
He does not teach you. What he does do is write a bunch of notes on the board and not explain any of the steps. I wish i had read reviews on him before taking his class.
Charmers was the best professor I have ever taken at Cerritos College. He always made sure people were understanding his lectures. His exams were only his lectures. If people complain on too much hw or class being too hard, my advice would be to open your book and study.
DO NOT get this teacher! It is near IMPOSSIBLE to get a good grade in his class, and I am a straight A student in school. Lectures are long and confusing for most. He will mark you down greatly if you do not work the problems the exact same way he does. I had to drop this class because my grade avg fell to a C+ by the second test.
Where do I begin?! For one he wasnt supposed to OG be the teacher for that class time. HEs HORRIBLE!! He translates the book to the board basically youre teaching yourself. If you dont do the exact method he shows he marks you down regardless of the correct answer you got. Emailed me about taking another math I already passed to help. HOW? F-!
Does not know what teaching is to begin with. Small mistakes on test cost you a letter grade. Doesn't supply the student with proper study guides for tests.
