Dude is the Man; His flowcharts rule!
Gal is fairly nice, but this course is very disorganized. I learned next to nothing.
Guy's one smart dude! Hockey's his life

Gal is a funny guy. Talk about hockey and he'll give you an A.
Terrible, Lazy, boring prof.
Gal is large and not so in charge... Hardest part of the class was a toss up between attending and keeping my face from slapping down on the desk. I'd take a knife to the back before taking this class again...
Gal knows his stuff but doesn't know how to teach it. You ask a question and he says, very quickly, "do this, this, this, this, and this, and you've got it!" meantime you're back at step 2...
Apparently he used to be good professor... now he acts like he doesn't want to be there. He assumes you know a lot of accounting and asks the class vague questions. I would not recommend this class.
really nice guy but a horrible class. I would not reccomend it at all. No one ever has any idea what is going on and it is a waste of time.
I don't know why some of the people have given bad comments about him , but he is great. I learnt a lot from this class. His exam questions are a little tricky but he shows you similar example ahead of time. SO it's OK.
dude doesn't know a damn thing about information technology.. he uses projectors and doesn't use the internet really. i guess you learn how to use access and stuff but the class is boring. he's a nice dude but the class does not rule at all, avoid this a
probably the worst teacher in the Isenberg School. Unclear, Arrogant and a complete waste of time. His class is a mess.
HORRIBLE if i were his boss he would be fired/cleaning messy toilets. The WORST teacher in SOM. Terrible communicator, sadistic, has no concept of how he comes off, seems unaware of the class environment and is not in touch with reality. Nobody understands what is going on. AVOID this teacher at all costs. very subjective plays favorites beware
Reading the previous post, and having experienced Gal first hand, I have to disagree tremendously. It is much harder said than done to pay attention in his class, his textbook is a complete waste of money, and he is lazy and unorganized. Overall I did not learn anything.
Absolute waste of time. It's like advanced SOM 210 except you have no clue what is happening at any point. I didn't buy the book, didn't study at all and got a B+ because he liked me. Pray to God that you get good people in your group for the project because it is the only thing your grade is based on.
Professors teaching techniques are not useful and he is not clear on what he wants and when it's due.
it's like som 210 on roids-but, you don't actually learn anything. it is impossible to pay attention-at least in his 312 class you can play on the internet. don't take this class unless absolutely have to.
The worst class ever at SOM. The Prof. is not clear about anything. Useless. Waste of time.
worst teacher ive ever had
Majority of class is Access work but there is nothing on it in the book; only discussed in lectures briefly. Professor is purposely vague on assignments so you "learn it better". Class website is unorganized and incorrect(had 2 quiz solutions posted w/o answers). 300/800 points are just for the project so you better do good on it.
You won't have any idea what is going on - even when the class is over and done with. Save yourself some money and do not buy the book.
Nice guy if you go to his office hours and get to know him! The material is dry but he does his best to make it bearable. Attendance is not required so don't go if you don't like it.
Honestly no idea what is going on in this class. Lectures are pretty useless other than when he shows you how to do the projects. He is, however, pretty helpful if you go to his office hours. Alot of people do bad on the test so he scales it. He just rambles on about things in a way which make it impossible to understand what he's talking about.
Class isn't too bad if you're into computers/technology. However, Gal brings favoritism to a level i've never experienced in an academic environment. If you want an A you better be: 1) On a sports team, 2) A hot chick, or 3) A suck up.
Class can be extremely boring. This professor knows a lot about the subject, but sucks at making it interesting. Either come to class and try your best to stay awake or buy the book and learn it yourself. If you go to his office hours, he is very helpful.
My class with Professor Gal is one the worst class I have ever taken at Umass. The Professor is not helpful at all. Assigns big assignments and then cancel his office hours just before they are due. You have to suck up to him to get a good grade. Once he postponed a quiz because one girl in that class forgot her prs. He can be very rude at times.
I took this class online over the summer. Buy the book and you'll be fine. All his quiz questions can be googled to get the right answers. Tests are straight from the book's definitions. Access assignment is hard, but find someone who knows the program and you'll be golden. Very glad i took this requirement online, much easier than on campus i hear
This class is honestly not as bad as it has been made out to be. Work with friends on the database assignments and you'll be fine. There is a lot of group work, so be prepared for a huge final project. Graham is really helpful in office hours. He explains the information much more clearly there, and you want him to know your name; it helps.
This is seriously my worst class in UMASS ever. The prof. assumes that the students already know the stuffs in the course and gives ridiculously overwhelming HWs, quizzes, etc. I don't understand why this course has to be a Major requirement for acct. Terrible .Terrible. Terrible.
this class was a joke. guy hasn't changed his course since 'nam
Worst class AND professor in Isenberg. The amount of work is ridiculous and makes absolutely zero sense. Numerous assignments every week, iclicker quizzes, and a huge group project. Going to class is pretty much useless and no one has any idea what he's talking about. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Worst class in Isenberg. Has nothing to do with accounting and you wont learn a single thing. He randomly assigns assignments and doesn't tell the class so you have to keep checking blackboard. Going to his office hours is useless and he'll put you on the spot making you feel stupid. Good luck and just try to survive.
just horrible. gal is a nice human being but is a horrible teacher. He is SUPER disorganized and doesn't even have a proper syllabus that makes it easy to track your grade in the class. assignments are ridiculous but watch the videos because they help, very possible to get an A if you have access to the right materials but you won't learn a thing
The class isn't that bad but there is a lot of homework that is very time consuming and that no one in the class even understands. The good thing is that you can still do well because the class is out of so many points. And team exams!
All I can say is goodluck. This has to be the worst class I've taken in Isenberg and I couldn't tell you a thing I learned. His grading is all over the place and by the end of the semester I wasn't sure if I was getting an A or a D in the class. It's that bad. Also, you get a participation grade when its a lecture of about 80 kids.
More accurate and concise knowledge of subject .
This is the hardest accounting class I have taken so far and I am a senior. Concepts are more technical and pertain to Microsoft Access and Visio. Once you know how to navigate these programs you are 50% ready to take on the assignments. Exams are straight forward and are based on 2 diagrams that are even given to you beforehand.
Avoid like the plague. If you have to take any classes from this guy, save it for senior year or something. Unless you plan to go no life with the studying and workload for this course, don't think you are going to get a decent grade. Asking him questions also gets you nowhere because he gives the most ambiguous answers I have ever heard.
Assignments can be hard and tedious. He doesn't explain assignments well and then grades you harsh because "you didn't do what was assigned" even though you read it thorougly, he barely explains the confusion of the assignments even when you ask. Do all the work AND THEN SOME in order to do well. Get inside this guy's head and you'll do well.
Honestly to put it as nicely as possible, this guy is maybe the worst person I have ever met. I'm only 3 weeks in so no grades yet, and I already despise this guy. He is extremely pretetious. Literally no clarity in terms of deadlines or work. How on earth this guy still has a job is beyond me
If you really have to take either 311 or 312, take this. If it's not required for you, GTFO. I have never seen a prof disorganized. He gives quizzes on material he barely covers, not to mention that the material he covers is either vague or confusing. Due dates for assignments is vague and there's no syllabus. Not a bad guy, but horrible professor.
The class is largely front loaded. The test and quiz material are things you haven't seen before. Online it sucks. He throws everything at you and lets you sort it out. He gave a blank figure on test and asked 20 3pt. questions. Figure was not in lecture, .ppt, or book.
This class is the worst I've ever taken in my life, and I took Res-Econ 212 last semester. Graham is condescending whenever you need help, office hours are continuously cancelled. Random points are taken off your assignments without explanation, the quizzes are on material you've never even heard of in class, and you're basically on your own.
This class is horrible. Lectures are not clear and there is no syllabus so it is hard to keep track of due dates. He almost never gives full credit on assignments and takes points off without explanation. The majority of the class cheats by sharing answers on tests and using work from prior years. TBH, if you don't do this, you'll probably fail
Worst class I have every taken in my life. He teaches systems, yet doesn't understand how to get internet access within his own classroom. Self-absorbed professor keeps chaotic schedule where you have no idea what is being covered or due on any specific day.
Take a different class however you can. Gal is completely disorganized, we seem to cover a different topic every class with no relation at all. The syllabus is awful, and he puts assignments on blackboard randomly without telling us and no explanation. Nice guy I guess but horrendous professor.
Graham is incredibly disorganized, rude, and condescending. He cancelled all of his office hours before an exam week, and his lectures are chaotic/disorganized. A lot of previous semesters work is on coursehero/the internet though. You're gonna have to google them to figure it out. Worst professor/class ever.
worst class and worst professor ever, seriously! this is a class from hell
Graham Gal is the worst. He's an awful person and an even worse professor. He is rude, arrogant and disrespectful to students. He never explains anything, is unorganized, and will throw assignments on students without warning on BBL. The material is very challenging as well so you will need a lot of help.
How to get an A. Go to class for the quizzes (you don't need to pay attention). Ask someone from a previous semester for the assignments/tests, I guarantee at least 1 person in the lecture hall with the Zip files of all the answers from last year. Go to office hours (30 minutes weekly) and he'll give you 100% participation + extra points on quizzes
This is my second professor rating ever. He is the worst professor I have ever had at UMass. This class was difficult, and there was little direction or explanation for most of what he does in class.
Absolute WORST educator I've encountered in my life. I had a 3.85 before this class and expect to get a D+ if I'm lucky. He doesn't explain material, throws random assignments at you and docks 15-20 points per assignment with no reasoning. Extremely condescending and his lectures are so scattered and incoherent that no-one knows what going on.
Not a good professor. You're given lots of assignments but no reference points to complete them (textbook doesn't help whatsoever), grading was entirely confusing, tests/quizzes have nothing to do with the hws, participation is a random grade because he mostly lectures in class, just overall a bad class and full of confusing busy work
I hate to pile on, but Gal was one of the worst professors I had at Umass. His lectures are vague and confusing and his grading criteria are "unclear" at best. The only way I passed this class was attempting to get assignments from other students.
Completely disorganised in every way possible. Does not explain anything in class clearly and sometimes doesn't explain at all but still gives it on homeworks. Rude and not helping at all. Homeworks have to be checked on calendar because they are not ordered right on blackboard. Avoid his class by all means possible.
Graduated in '09, had 1 class with Professor Gal and enjoyed learning from him. He knew his subject 100% You had to listen and pay attention, just like in real life and especially in business. It took effort but was so worth it. Certainly one of the top 5 professors I ever had.
Honestly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The class is definitely annoying, but most of the homeworks arent that tough. Dont even bother stressing over exams because you dont learn half of the material thats on them. Exams are basically worth an assignment grade so its pretty easy to get by with at least a B. Lectures drag on.
The class is so unorganized. He thinks that you are on the same page as him, when usually no one else is. It is almost impossible to keep up with the class, due to the lack of instructions/resources. Good luck to anyone that needs this class. I am sorry for you.
the worst class at isenberg. take this class online if you can. professor is rude and condescending towards students. class is heavily disorganized with a lot of material and homework that relate nothing to the exam. assignments are vague and he doesn't teach you how to do them so hope that you get good group.
Worst Prof in Isenberg.
I've never been so constantly confused in any class. What is taught in lectures has no correlation to any of the assignments you do outside of class (there are a lot of them). Also the whole semester I had no idea how I was doing and what my grade was. Just make sure you pass in all the access/powerbi assignments
It isnt impossible. His philosophy is that if he teaches you something you already know, you aren't learning. Pay attention in class because he explains everything (easy to zone off). Keep the calendar handy to be aware of upcoming assignments. He goes over how to do the assignments in class (queries, powerbi)TAKE NOTES. Reach out 4 help&he'll help
Not as hard as some people say, but he's an awful professor regardless. His grading is a mess (don't trust blackboard), his assignments are disorganized, and his lectures are horribly confusing. Studying for tests can feel impossible- my biggest tip is the thoroughly understand the figures on blackboard, since they're like 50% of whats on the test.
In my 4 years at UMass, this was the worst professor I have ever had. His Blackboard is a mess and he is condescending toward students. Take this class online. If not possible, find the dropbox, study figures for the exams, do the CATMES. Make sure to verify your final grade because he incorrectly recorded some students grades this semester. 0/5
I don't know where to begin. The most unorganized professors I have ever had. He has assignments from 2014 in the grade book, video lectures from 2011 that are just audio and his blackboard is the worst thing I have ever seen. Why do I need to go on a scavenger hunt to find the material? Assignments have little to no direction. He loves big 10 tho
Guy is completely disorganized and does not even give directions to the assignments he gives. Blackboard is a mess and you never have any idea what youre supposed to be learning. He just babbles during class. Terrible just terrible.
Absolutely avoid at all costs, he is condescending towards students and gives assignments with no guidance whatsoever. You will be spending 4-6 hours a week just figuring out how to start these assignments
I made a rate my professor for the first time (and hopefully last time I'll use it) just to rate Graham. The single worst class I have taken in 4 years at Isenberg. Condescending, the workload is not reasonable at all, and he offered little help the one time I reached out. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt at first, but he is the worst.
The excruciating chaos of this class is almost hilarious in its execution. I won't lie and say that the professor's condescention didn't get a few chuckles from me, but I have never experienced such a mess of a course. His teaching style is often reminiscent of a James Joyce passage, and his course organization is truly baffling. Good luck.
Truly not as bad as everyone thinks. BBL is a complete mess but the calendar is accurate! LOTS of group work so if you have a bad team speak up and he'll change it. Assignments aren't that bad bc he goes over them in class and the data user manual and/or XBRL workbook explains things in-depth. Participate!! He just wants to connect with students
Good Guy but Not As Good of A Professor The Good: Very Caring and will accommodate if you have something important come up and a really good guy and loves having students participate and talk The Bad: The course (i.e. a lot of classwork, very unorganized couldn't tell what assignment was even due, NEED to understand Access. PowerBI, and XBRL)
Had him technically as a TA for Acc 222 and he was the worst. Talks to you like you're a 5 year old, gets mad when you use the bathroom in class and makes comments in front of everyone about you. Super condescending and is terrible at teaching. He spends half the class trying to figure out how to set up his computer.
I just started this class and have gotten the idea that it might be time for him to hang up his cleats. This is the most confusing start that I've ever had to a class.
This guy can't tell a computer from a potato, he can't update Canvas to make assignments and reading material organized, and he makes assignments impossible to do with the information he gives, the only thing he did right was putting us in teams to help correct his mistakes.
Best teacher I've ever had. By far the most important class I've taken and he teaches it in a way where you really understand everything going on. His handsome charm along with his way with words make this class a must enroll for any accounting major. It's always the best part of my day when I have his class.
I don't think he deserves the hate he gets on here. Graham wants everyone to do well and the grading system is set up for you to succeed. The assignments can be tedious, but as long as you try and complete them, you should be getting an A. He is funny and lighthearted and the topics are useful in the real business world.
Underrated professor. He makes it easy to do well and isn't too strict with grading and deadlines. Lots of group work which I didn't love but its inevitable. Great guy!
Dr. Gal is a great guy. He assigned some very challenging projects, but was always willing to answer my questions and help me with the work. He has a great sense of humor, which ultimately made his class one of my favorites. The low ratings here do not do him justice.
