Requires term paper for end of course, which is a pain and difficult to write. Course includes weekly quizzes, which are 10 random multiple choice questions from the week's chapter. Lectures don't correspond with week's chapter. 2 midterms and a final.
Talks funny.
very nice teacher. Very helpful. Interesting class.
Hard teacher, But knows his subject. Total lecture class. He is very helpful teacher when you ask questions! over all I think he was a great teacher
No Comments
this class was hard. he isn't all that nice and the midterm paper and final test are both a big pain. lots of essay writing in this class.
Lecture class, and has weekly quizzes along with a term paper, mid-term, and final. Offers quiz tutorials, which are very helpful.
pompous and boring and ridiculous
his class isn't that challening, just 10 weekly classes, a midterm and final, and one big essay due at the end of the quarter. he tells you the terms and essay questions for the final beforehand. he also holds study sessions for the quizzes and tells you the questions
Haslam is a very good teacher. He is very enthusiastic about his subject, and at times can be really f'in funny. He once talked about wanting to kill a dog cuz he had to talk walk it in the snow. However the weekly quizzes suck balls. His class is very difficult, but worth it.
Online version. Communication was difficult- email replies took >week. He confused assignments from other classes, assigned quizzes last minute and always seemed disorganized. He is vague in grading discussions and the 2 required essays. Weird weighted grading system. I liked the textbook.
He is not that hard, but very broing if you're not into history. He really knows his stuff though.
Haslam is an awesome professor, really knows his subject. He is always willing to help you during his office hours. The weekly quizzes arn't that bad... just attend the tutorials he offers before the quiz (He tells you the questions!)
He is the WORST teacher I have ever had. His communication is HORRIBLE. He can't keep papers straight and blamed me for someone elses mistake and then won't admit it. WORST TEACHER EVER!
It was awesome! I would totally take another one of Haslam's classes. It is a little challanging, but quiz tutorials are helpful and he is always availible to ask questions.
It is a hard class, but you will learn a lot.The professor offers tutorials for weekly quizes that are very helpful. He is very konwledgable and presents the subject well.If you want to learn and are not afraid of hard work take his class.
Very intelligent and articulate
A great and unique teacher who actually cares about his students. He also has a cool accent and many great stories to share.
Haslam was not an easy teacher but i learned a lot in his class. hes also a nice guy and if you pay attention in his quiz reviews and take notes after you attend them, then its easy to get by.. especially if you do well in the quiz areas.
He is very knowledgable, he knows his subject very well. However, he does have a very self-righteous, British attitude. He expects you to eat, sleep and breath history as if it is your only subject. He is very willing to help you prepare for any assignment but he thinks he is a university professor when he teaches in a community college.
This is a hard online class. He does expect ALOT of reading and postings to the website. My posts and replies were ususally not under 1000 words...and he required several of those per week. He is somewhat snobby, unresponsive to emails, and not very helpful or understanding.
Keep on top of everything and you will do fine. If you don't give it your all and just do alright on everything, expect a C. I didn't try that hard, and i still passed just fine.
Graham Haslam is the man! He doesn't really have a British accent but he still says things like "chaps" and "blokes"... Also a great historian, Dr. Haslam gives great lectures and really knows his stuff.

Very good teacher and kind of funny. Tests are alittle hard if you have a hard time remembering what you read but the tutorials REALLY help. At the tutorial he re-words the tests questions so you know what is on the test. Your not aloud to right at the tutorial so bring a tape recorder!
He is hard of hearing and never answers your question clearly he just makes it more confusing then before...

Dry class. You don't need to be tired, the lectures will knock you out. He does have a snobbish air to him. Not a comfortable environment to learn, he demands alot of reading making it hard to absorb anything...and I was interested in the subject before the class. He destroyed my desire to ever take another history class.
If you like history, you'll love his class. It seems like if you show a genuine interest in the subject, he notices and he'll like you. He knows the material SO WELL, he doesn't even look at notes during lectures because he has it all memorized. I find him really funny, but SASSY and British.
Only take him for US Military History which is a FANTASTIC CLass...but Dr. Haslam..hmm...a bit dry...but if you go Thursdays to his little tutorials (ONLY IF YOU HAVE STUDIED!!!)...he gives you the answers to the quiz...and all you have to do is come out of of the class...and write the questions down and then sell them!! HAHA!
Haslam is by far, the worst teacher I have had during my time at BCC. He does not deserve a place among the many fine instructors that this school has to offer.
This class was the worst experience I have had so far at BCC. He is mean to his students and a bit boring. He makes you think that you need the notes that you take, but you never use them except to double check stuff already in your book. Overall, it's a hard class and not very fun.
Haslam is by far the worst teacher ever, he doesnt care about the students at all. If you need help he makes you feel stupid and never really helps you. There is a lot of ready and quizzes every week. He is always late to class too. His class is boring, dry and pointless. In a nutshell, dont take his class its a waste of time and money!
Grahm haslam is quite possibly the worst teacher i have ever had, sure he knows what he is talking about, but all he ever does is lecture, adn on two occasions, he gave out the wrong quiz, adn refused to admit it. Save yourself the trouble, dont take anything with haslam
Intellectual history: It was a difficult class, but he offered weekly meetings to cover the material that would be on that week's quiz, and he gave the terms and essay questions that would be on the midterm and final. Difficult class, but a really great teacher.
Don't take the class if you work during the day and can't go to the tutorials where he gives the answers to the quizzes, otherwise they are really hard quizzes. That is my biggest complaint that he was not willing to be flexible with students who worked.
He knows the material very well and LOVES history. So, if you like history, you will like his class. Format: He lectures, you take notes; to pass the quizes, you have to read about 30 pages of text per week; midterm and final, he gives you the terms and the essay questions you need to answer. You will need 8-10 hours of study per week, do so, and you'll do fine.
He is the hardest teacher I have ever had. All he does is lecture and you have to read the book. He says you have to put a minimum for 2 hours for his class only, 5 days a week! He is very prideful of his english background and pretends to talk like he is English so he pronounces the historical people's names weird. Just pretty much an awful teache
this class is so easy, but so boring. you come to class and he talks the whole time. but if you go to his quiz sessions he gives you all of the questions and answers to the quizes. he also gives you the questions and terms that will be on all of the tests.
The class is easy ish. You have to constantly read the book, but he has test prep meetings where he gives u all the questions, so if you go to those, thats good. He is raellllly anal during class, no talking or ur grade drops. I think he has one too many history books shoved up his ass. Dont really like him either. overall, id avoid this guy
Haslam is very clear on what he expects from his students, which makes learning from him quite simple if the student pays attention. He gives weekly tutorials which relate directly to his quizzes. Very helpful. Overall, I would say that Haslam can be a bit dull, but he is clear about his requirements. Paying attention is key with Haslam.
Good teacher. Hard, but a good teacher. If you go to tutorial and read the textbook you should have no problem, however he grades hard on mid term and finals, so you should be prepared. Take him if you want to be challanged.
Haslam is a nice person but his lectures are long and dull. I have a hard time staying awake. I wouldnt be taking this class if it wasnt a requirement..
lecture, lecture, lecture, thats all you do in class, plus a lot of reading during the week, however all considered its simply time consuming, not that hard since you can do poorly on tests and still pull out a decent grade. Just pay attention to his boring lectures and read and you can easily get a good grade, its boring but you can do it.
Online class is great! He will always help you and email you back. Just lots of reading and class discussions. I would say there's 30 min of reading each day and that's it. Heavy text use. He does not slack off. Multiple choice tests and some essay tests. Gives tutorals. You can easily get a pass in this class. Great professor online, trust me!
He is very knowledgeable about history and loves the subject but he is a VERY hard teacher. When he says two hours of studying a night, he is not kidding. His is a lecture based class and his lectures can be dull. I would only recommend his class to those who live and breathe history and have ample free time.
Definitely Take Dr. Haslam's classes online. It is his BEST format. He will always respond to email requests fr help and he really knows his stuff!
He was extremely boring. He never waivered from the lecture format. He's a nice person, but does not know how to connect to his students. If you don't read the material in depth, you're gonna fail. But he offers tutorial sessions that help a lot. Go to them for sure. He is also a very difficult grader. Get on his good side. Sit in front.
One of the best teachers I ever had in history. He helped me get into University of Edinburgh which is my home town uni. His classes were easy for me, though he never seemed to leave the front of class I still learned a lot from him, even though it was American history! Took only 3 classes to learn how messed up this country really is.
horrible!
I really enjoyed his class. There is a lot of reading, and you will have to know dates and names! But, I have to say get a digital recorder, sit back and listen. He is a very interesting person.
If you want to miss class, slack off, and screw around, don't take this class. You will fail. You need to see him after class, go to the quiz tutorials and ask him for help; he will love you. Be polite in class. Do the weekly reading, the quizzes count for 20 percent of your total grade. This is not an easy class, but you can do well.
This class is the most fun I've had in a while. He makes the topic incredibly interesting. It's very time consuming, nand if you don't go to the tutorials you're screwed, but it's really fun.
Honestly the worst class I have ever taken at BCC. The lectures are ridiculously boring and the reading is just as dull. He lectures for the entire class period 5 days a week. The final is torture. If you like history this class will probably ruin it for you because the information is presented in such a boring way.

All he is is lecture. I found him really interesting, he is very passionate about history which makes it really easy to comprehend. He has a fun little accent that also makes him fun to listen to. If you aren't good with long lectures and coming to class consistently I'd recommend you not to take this class with him.
As an online class I would not recommend!!! It is a very time consuming and way toooo much busy work and useless discussion boards. Not very helpful and a very harsh grader!
Extremely hard teacher and class. I had to studies my butt off and still wasn't able to do well on the tests and quizzes. I suggest only taking this class if your hobby is History. I did learn a lot but it wasn't because of his teaching. I had to go out and learn it from other books and website.
This was a really interesting class, I learned a lot. I'm usually bad with history classes but found this one to be okay. If you go to the tutorials there is no way to do bad on the quizes, as for the Midterm and Final you get the questions a head of time. The FINAL is HARD! He is a little absent minded & we got stuck in WWII, & never got past it
He gives contradictory directions and he’s quite harsh with assignments and comments. He also expects students to be history PhD in order to get an A. Do yourself a favor and choose another class.
Took Online. Hard, but thats cuz im not good at history. He is very helpful and you have to do a lot of reading and then a discussion very week.
If you do the reading it's not that bad. But you do have to stay awake and take notes. He is helpful, but doesn't make it easy for you.
He is a real teacher. He is willing to help students and want to see the student's progress.
Great teacher. I had issues with multiple ch portion, which I attribute to the book. On the whole, he's understanding and as long as you communicate with him, a very fair grader. Took mine online, but would rather have taken it in person, as his lectures are interesting and relevant. I recommend taking his class in person, but online was cool too.
Not only is he clearly very passionate about history, but Dr. Haslam was always extremely available to students, and that goes a long way, in my book. Take advantage of his office hours -- he's really nice, and very helpful!
Wonderful teacher. His lectures were engaging, although you do have to pay attention and study hard. His classes are definitely not easy. However, he is very helpful and generous with his time, and wanted me to succeed. I appreciated the challenge and felt like I had the help I needed. His class was probably my favorite class I took at BCC.
Enjoyed the class. Would take another class with him. Very easy going and is available in his office for help (he will help you).
The harder of the two classes I've taken with him. Show up for class, do the reading, attend the quiz tutorials, and do as he tells you. Easy A if you do as he recommends. Speak with him after class, he's really an interesting guy. He's inspired me down the history major track! And he's always so well dressed
Easy class if you can do the work. All fairly easy too; just seems like a lot. always talk to him if you need help, either email or in person. really helpful
cool teacher. quizzes every friday which aren't too bad. the main tests are really hard though.
Horrid, his lectures don't correspond to the quizzes he gives he demands that you memorize important dates for the midterm and finals and often times will forget to mention what the date is for things. If you take this class be prepared to do any learning from the book your lecture notes will not help you.
Mr. Haslam was over all a really good teacher but the class was really hard. I took it online and the instructions are very clear, there is just alot that you have to do if you want a good grade in the class. He is a very nice person and genuinely wants to help you and loves history. He is by no means easy, you really have to work for a good grade.
I had him for four different classes over the past few years. He was always willing to help during his office hours and was willing to let students present alternate ideas to his own in class. Nice guy, great semi-Brit accent. He worked for Prince Charles as a Historian for England for like 10 years so he has some really cool stories.
Put in the effort and you will do well. There are a ton of helpful resources such as study guides and group tutoring. Even though there is a fair amount of work, if you don't do well you really only have yourself to blame. Assignments, and exams are very clearly presented...no surprises.
I think DOCTOR Haslam of England (doubt it) does a wonderful job of making condescending comments to anyone who asks questions in order to make them feel incompetent. The only positive feedback I would give his class was the meditation: his voice is extraordinarily easy to fall asleep to. Show up, cram for pointless exams, and you're good to go.
This was an online course. My GPA is a 3.98. He gave me C's on papers. I e-mailed to ask why; wanting to know what I could do better (content, format, incorrect information). The response was that was - that was the grade I gave. I requested a meeting on campus, he was suggesting 2 weeks (and 4 assignments later) if he had time. I withdrew.
Absolutely love this teacher, best one I've had at BCC. If you read and go to his office for a pre-quiz each Thursday you'll ace the quizzes. Study guides are given for exams, only two of those. One major paper. Big on grammar!
All he cares about is specific dates. Tests are extremely hard. Sit close or else you can't hear him. SUPER BORING!!!
Haslam is old school. I learned a lot and was challenged to think for myself rather than just synthesize information from the text. A great teacher if you have an intellectual appetite - if you want an easy A, you're screwed.
Amazing teacher! Took class on campus. Goes out of his way to make time for you (if you ask), very interesting, is ACTUALLY from England (go to his office & look around lol), very knowledgable. If you WANT to learn about history, DO the assgnmnts and DONT have ADD (meaning: be ready to sit and listen to lectures) then you'll like him. Great teacher
Breakdown- 80 pgs a week from textbook + lectures that lead to a 10 question quiz every fri. 80pgs is ALOT to for only 10 Q's =( and to top it off he requires 8 pg term paper but does allow the use of ANY internet or encyclopedias because "they are not scholarly works". also if you miss 3 classes you get an F no negotiation. i dropped the class.
Note: before this class I had taken 5 qrts at BCC full time and was part of phi theta kappa society. I'm a hard working student. Haslam is unbelievable, he mis-spells important latin words on the white board you can google what he says, half of it is not accurate history. I got a C- in this class after getting B's on the test, B on the paper.
Lectures are incomprehensible.. always about the sex lives of Roman emperors and disgusting details that could be left out. The work load for this test is crazy considering the material is all arbitrary, we don't REALLY know that any of what we know about Rome is true, so why are exact dates so crucial? Class was unbelievable.
He was not helpful at all when I asked questions, he would just say "look at so-and-so's posting" (it was an online class)
Unless you sit in the very first row, you will not hear a word he says. His voice randomly gets soft so you may catch a few words but not much. Our grade is based off of tests from our readings, a midterm, and a final paper. His lectures almost never follow along with the text of the book, so all you have to do is read the book and pass tests.
This teacher is not for people that lack intilect. One of the best history teachers i have ever had he knows a ton about what he is talking about and as long as you pay attention you will do okay. Most of the complaints i have read are just because people are lazy as hell and dont want to do anything who said college would be easy?
The class was very rigorous, mostly lectures with a weekly multiple choice quiz. Haslam is very knowledgable concerning US History (funny: he's British), and cares more about understanding of historical themes and events than specific dates and bland memorization. He takes his classes very seriously. Not for the timid or uninterested.
His class isnt that hard as long as you read the text and the documents and do the tutorials youll be fine for the quizzes. Theres only one 5 page essay that you have to write the whole quarter so its not that bad.
He is a nice teacher but very strict. You are only allowed to miss 3 days before your grade drops. The course work isn't very hard but there is a quiz every week. He gives tutorials for the quizzes and tests.
Extremely knowledgeable and quite helpful. Weekly quizzes are easy so long as you read the book or pay attention during lectures. Study for the mid-term and final tests and they aren't too bad (if you do poorly on the mid-term he'll combine the percentage of the final grade into the percentage for the final). Only one term paper, 5-8 pages
Haslam was a sweet old man but he had very boring lectures. He's very strict on the attendance. You have weekly quizes on about 80 pages of reading with 10 questions. As long as you can do the reading and remember the facts and times, you'll do fine.
Hard teacher, knows his stuff but grades/teaches his opinions. He teaches history like he was there. Very boring lectures, hardest class I have taken. Tons of outside reading and tests are very difficult.
Online unresponsive and forgets to post things even when he says they are there. The feedback on the Mid-Term essays was incomprehensible. Would avoid any future classes with him. Also seems very condensing to students when they do ask a question.
He was an adorable old man, but his class was HARD! I was so stressed about that class, and I got a B+. His grading system is that 95-100 is an A, 90-95 = A-, 85-90 = B+, 80-85 = B, and so on. He was very hard to hear, even at the front of the class, and he really knows his stuff, so BSing is out of the question. We had fairly easy weekly quizzes.
Online class - lots of work. Very specific about requirements although somewhat sloppy himself when posting to the homepage. He accepts no excuses but excuses himself rather easily. I DO NOT RECOMMEND the online class.
great teacher. easy weekly quizs. midterm and final are inclass essays and terms. hard class though.
I absolutely hated this class. I am not one to struggle but in this class I did. I went in for help and he said, and I quote, "I'm here to teach, not help." He's really picky about what matters and what doesn't in the final paper. I do not reccomend him AT ALL.
TIME CONSUMING. Weekly quizzes got progressively more difficult. mid term and final is 40 sig./definitions (ugh), & essay questions. Research paper to do too, and you read about 70 pages a week. Unless the content passionately interests you those 70 pages feels forever. too much work for an elective, pick something else. Haslam was pretty friendly
I wouldn't say that Graham is a heartless and ruthless grader. He will just go through your work with a not just a fine pick and comb, but with a needle and tweezers as well. He does lack the ability to connect with his students, which I understand is a fairly modern way of teaching so I can't blame em for being so absent minded and cold at times.
Extremely subjective grader. Doesn't understand the difference between summarizing an historical event and explaining the significance of an event. Only presents his own historical interpretations and omits commonly accepted theories in his lectures.
Very problematic teacher. Called me a pet name, which make going to class uncomfortable, and I consistently received low grades despite earning great grades from other history teachers at BC. I finally compared tests with my fellow students and learned that he gave them better grades FOR THE SAME ANSWERS!! TERRIBLE teacher, and not helpful at all.
