Inspiring! Really loves his subject-poetry-and will challenge you to meet him there.
Very easy class, yet very boring. Spends way too much time on each piece of literature and has problems accepting other people's opinions. Thinks what he says is right all the time and he tries to show off too much. All in all, it's a super easy class if you don't want a lot of work.
The class is easy, and it's not hard to figure out what the teacher wants. My only problem is his brushing off of opinions that HE asked for. That and the fact that he declares every story we read "is a love story."
Awesome. Actually made me interested in old school poetry and literature. The best professor I've ever had.
This guy is an excellent professor. Hardly any homework and the reading is very little and easy. It is a good call to take him.
A lot of fun and very nice.
He is a really easy grader. Not too much work easy to b.s.
He has a bit of a British accent that can be difficult to understand at time, but he is a great teacher. He loves what he is talking about and knows most of us are not English majors, so he doesn't expect more than he should. Highly Recommend!!
The readings were tough, but he made the class interesting. He could have done a better job at inciting discussion, though. But, it was like a comedy show every day. Bottom Line: He's very smart and helps to easily make the material understandable.
I like him, he is funny. However, I would have liked more discussion in class. I've taken several classes with him, and he always seems to summarize most of the work, rather than really engage with it. Fun teacher though.
Makes class fun and exciting even though the subject material may not be. Helpful in dumbing down some of the more difficult readings so that everyone may grasp them.
He's awesome!!! He really tries to make it fun. Doesn't expect too too much from us. I love his accent!
Mr. Thomas is so funny and fun to watch and listen to. I loved his lectures and he was great at helping us understand the material in a different way. His syllabus is chaotic and you should pay close attention to what's due when--or just ask him. He's a very good teacher. Take him, but pay attention and go to class. He loathes faulty attendance.
Awesome Prof, get him if you can
Awesome teacher... really shows how teachers can get their students really envolved... hes very animated too
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Cool guy.
the few...the proud...the english majors...hooohaaah! and jesus. who can't understand a little British accent?? how are you still in school?
One of the best classes I've ever had. He's an amazing teacher who loves the craft. So highly recommended I can't even describe.
He's awesome! Funny, great at teaching you how to interpret readings and definitely has you at least attempt to learn to like/understand poetry/plays, and short stores...Definitely recommending this class!!
i have purposefully taken Thomas for three classes so far into my major. he's a great teacher and finds a way to make boring material interesting and easy to remember. his tests are reasonable, as well as his assignments. probably one of the best teachers i've ever had.
Enjoyable class. Assignments are all straight forward although I did not always know what to expect with my grades on the play responses. Sometimes I would put lots of effort and thought into them and get average grades, then other ones I would b.s. and recieved full points. Don't understand that. Easy A though.
Fun class!
not as easy as his 180 course, but still fun
A great class! There are lots of short stories to read as well as five plays throughout the semester but he goes over every single one in class so even if you don't read them you will still know about them. The assignments are easy and he is really funny, so the class isn't boring. Take this class if you can!
Thomas is a great teacher! Read what he assigns, essays are pretty much responses to what you read (plays, poetry, short stories). He encourages social interactions, but when there isn't he talks. I took him for 481, easy, funny, and I learn a lot. You can slack...but don't.
classes were sometimes boring but he is an easy professor. he doesn't have high expectations jst know the stories and hve a great amnt of opinion abt them you'll be just fine he's such a funny teacher good sense of humor despite how boring the class can get.. take him.. he's great..
Great teacher. Makes English a very fun subject and he is a really funny/witty guy! Loved the class!
This class is very interesting. Probably one of the only classes really, truly, enjoy going to. The assignments are fun short stories which are I enjoy alot and I'm not the kind of person that reads alot of books. :D
this is the one class this semester that i really enjoyed attending. take this professor if you can! definitely not a powerpoint sort of guy, but all class discussions. loved it.
SUCH a nice professor! Prof. Thomas is pretty straightforward in what he expects from you, and the responses you'll have to write for assignments are based purely on your own opinion, which is nice. The exams can be a pain if you didn't prepare with details of the works, but they're not horrible. Definitely recommended.
easy, easy class. he's smart, witty, and fun although class can get a bit boring sometimes
easy, if you go to class and do all your responses and study for the test, you'll do fine. oh yeah, the group project was a pain because i had an unorganized group. 10 people in a group is not effective
Coolest Prof. EVER!! Loved the class so much I kept the book. There's 4 one-pg papers you have to write on the plays you've read. Really easy..just a short summary & your thoughts on it. Midterm & final are based on readings.Just write alot of your opinion and you'll get an A. We also had to write a poem - just some creative writing.
Awesome teacher. Really knows his stuff and is passionate about literature. Makes class interesting. Asks for short typed responses for some of the readings, but they are all based on opinion, so very easy. 3 tests. Easy if you do most of the reading or use cliffsnotes. Lectures are discussion based, but are actually fun. Take this professor!
Thomas is so awesome!! haha u should stop by and have a chat
All stories and poems could be found online, no need for txtbk. Very nice professor. Easy A. There's a midterm, final, 5 play responses, and one 5 pg theater paper. So u do have to watch one actual play. The other's are read in a book. Easy grader. Takes attendence, but I duno if he counts it. Not too organized or structured.
I gained very little insight from the other 80 students in class. He was better at lecturing off the top of his head than facilitating discussion. I learned more from the readings themselves and doing my own research than from attending class, though I still went regularly. Pity for students looking for "easy" professors like this one.
He is the best teacher I've ever had at CSULB. He lit up the room when he walked in... has such a great personality and really engages with the class. I always loved hearing him speak about literature and theater. His class is really great... I HIGHLY recommend his class.
Great teacher. Passionate and knows his English lit. Workload is light: lots of reading, but only short response papers. Allows reading CliffNotes. Midterm and final, mostly essays on class discussions. Can sometimes trail off on to random discussions about weird things and sometimes gives random in-class assignments like trying to write a poem.
Super nice guy, smart, insightful. However: going to class is useless. He always goes off into weird tangents, which are entertaining, but if I'm here to learn. If I wanted to be just entertained, I'd stay at home and read a book. Too bad, because attendance is mandatory. Seriously nice guy, but a waste of time.
Absolutely knowledgable and entertaining. Best of all, he treats you like a real college student - the way you should be treated. Attendance is mandatory and you should go or you'll fall behind on the readings.
love the british accent
ENGL 180. he is by far the best english teacher ive had. class is easy, as well as useful. u dont really need the book. he tells u to read short stories but goes over them in class. read for discussion. 5play responses. all plays can be found online or on video. easy grader & really funny. TAKE HIM
awesome teacher, with a great accent that makes the poems and stories read in class sound 100x as cool.
Very knowledgeable about his subject and sometimes uses every day stuff to link past and present. The class was informative and I gained a new appreciation about the type of literature I used to hate. Also, the class was so good that even though I'm sure he didn't like me, I *still* had a good time in his class. =) I recommend.
Awesome professor. He chose great stories and plays to go over. Discussions were always interesting even though I didn't say much. His accent is great :D very funny guy!
I went into the class with high hopes, but I found it a bit boring. He takes attendance, so go to class. He only requires responses to books--no essays--and if you have read them before, you won't have to read them again. Easy A.
He dumbed down British Lit by comparing it to Desperate Housewives, etc. He makes inappropriate, rude comments that he thinks are funny but aren't. It doesn't matter if you spend minutes or hours on papers, an A is impossible if he doesn't like you. Book mandatory, attendance not so much. I like Literature and I hated this class.
The class was easy. You have to respond to some readings which is very simple. You don't really need a book since he discusses the stories each class meet. Easy A!
This guy is one of the best teachers i have ever had! He grades your papers and gives them back the very next class with interesting feed back. He makes it fun to write papers cus you become anxious to see what he will think about them! He is a very awesome teacher and the class isn't hard, take it!
Best Professor EVER! The classes are always interesting. It isnt mandatory to attend, but I would HIGHLY recommend going to class because he is funny and he gives notes on what he wants you to say in your paper. Criteria: couple of responses on short stories, a midterm, final and a play write up. Be careful with play write up. Tends to grade harder
you do 3 responses of 3 novels each time - basically your opinion on whether or not you like the story. a midterm & final. & a group project. easy grader, very helpful. TAKE HIM!
Graham is the man! Seriously. His class was like an escape for me from the workload I experienced in my other classes. All he does is read, and we discuss the stories in class. There are responses however, and he's not quite clear on how he wants them, but he's not too hard of a grader, just as long as you stay on topic. Take him.
Fun class. He is quite a character (funny) so his class discussions are really lively. So as long as you stay engaged in the topics the homework wont be such a drag. Hes and easy grader, but can tell if you didn't read the material. Tests might be challenging, so make sure your up on the reading. Take his class, its worth it.
GREAT TEACHER loved him! he was such a nice kickback class. All we did in class was read poems and stories that were interesting and had discussions. There is a response to a play almost every week(very easy but he is a little bit of a hard grader if u dont think out of the box) tests are very broad just your opinions. Take him!! attend. not mand.
You have to appreciate his 30 years of experience in lecturing huge seminars. He is very poised, presents both serious and humorous levels of discourse. He's charming, understanding, kind to his students, an excellent professor, and my favorite at CSULB. He should be your first pick for this course, trust me! You'll enjoy his class!
Graham is from England, has the accent, is the real deal! You can't get a better quality of expertise about the Brits than someone who has grown up in the culture and truly understands nuances and passes these understandings along to his students. Your opinions DO count! He creates thinkers. He's one of CSULB's best kept secrets! TOP PICK!!!
He's a pretty cool teacher, great sense of humor, and kind of pervy. I did well on the tests and reaction papers and he gave me a C because he lost a few of my papers. He's cool, but just make sure you keep track of your work.
Graham Thomas is THE MAN. I didn't really have a desire to be in a Lit class, but this was by far my favorite class this semester. Take him!! There's work, but it pays off. Participate and he'll like you (even give you a few buck$ here and there). A lot of fun & VERY interesting!!
the professor is super funny and nice. however its hard to hear/understand him if you sit in the back of class. he mostly reads to you during class. there is a group presentation. responses are easy just do it and youll get credit. tests are east. fun class and he pays you to read aloud! literally!
Awesome teacher. Fun class. Attendance not mandatory but can't miss every class. He just reads to you a lot and asks random questions and gives out dollars to those who answer. Took it just for a GE, easy and fun.
Professor Thomas is awesome. Gotta love his accent too -- though it can be quite hard to understand at times lol. This class was really easy! He's a funny guy who actually makes literature quite fun. This class is all about your own opinions on stories, poems, etc. so it was cool. And yes, he really does give out dollars haha.
Professor Thomas is the COOLEST professor out there. His class not only makes you think, it's actually a really fun class. He always asks for your opinion on literature, and he is extremely funny. A word of advice, sit in the front so you can understand him.
Professor Thomas is... okay. I didn't really learn too much from him. Basically, if you can regurgitate his opinion on the exams and show some reflection in your responses to the assigned readings, you can get an A in the class easily.
Easy A as long as you do the assignments which are incredibly easy.
This class was a joke. Although he claims attendance is mandatory, I managed to pull off a B even though I missed class very often. His assignments are really easy and useless. He's really unclear about what he wants and he NEVER responds to any emails.
THE BEST instructor at CSULB. Very funny. During class reads childrens stories & provides in-depth interpretation of what the stories REALLY mean. Some of this will really blow your mind. You will never look at childrens stories the same way again. . If you do the assigned readings and write a thoughtful opinion of it you will get a high grade.
Thomas is one of the best instructors in the university. If you're looking for n literature course where you can throw out a few buzz words and write about the elite power structures inherent in society, look further. This class is about actually understanding the relevance of the literature and why we should study it. Also...comitatus.
Nice guy. Easy class. Helpful if you need help. 10 responses, a midterm, and a final. Easy if you simply look over the material and know what you are talking about. Take him!
He's English and reads to the class in a calm, emotive tone. Assignments are reasonable and not difficult. Easy A as long as you do the work. He's a funny dude that loves to talk about love and romance.
This prof Rocks! the only prof i have ever had in my life who pronounced my Italian last name properly. He's smarter than the average bear, laid back in a super fun way, and actually manages to teach you something in the process. Great European sensibility, fun and cool. Take him if u can before u graduate! you'll be glad u did!
He is the BEST prof. @ CSULB. I thank God that I took his class. Fun, interesting, great time during lecture as a class! Love him so much! You will learn a lot and he reads stories to you. That would be your best moment while you are at school. I would love to take class with him again. He's definitely my fovorite!
This is my second time having him, he is a great professor and very passionate about literature. Reading for this class is a must, you'll have small responses to turn in, a midterm, and a final.
Professor Thomas is an absolute treasure. He reads to you, the workload is minimal, and he grades VERY fairly.
He is ridiculously easy. There are six summaries, an article response, a panel presentation, and a handmade children's book that you have to turn in before the final. There's also a midterm that I didn't even study for, but still got a B. He reads stories to the class most Tuesdays, and panels present most Thursdays. Take him if you want an easy A.
Very easy, nice and funny professor. Some reading (mostly short stories ad 5 plays). Only homework was 5 short play responses, 1 poem, and a live play report. Easy grader. Easy class. RECOMMENDED.
This is the easiest class I've ever had. You basically go to class & he reads stories. It's also really interesting. You do some summaries (super easy) and a group project which you have total creative freedom over. It's hard to stay awake in his class b/c it's like bedtime. He's reading you stories in a British accent. How can you not fall asleep?
One of the worse classes that I've taken. He's an easy grader, but the class lacks structure, clarity, and organization. 9 summaries, handmade children's book, panel presentation, midterm and final are the class requirements. I like it when he reads to us, but it's so boring when panels present on almost every Thursdays! I would not take him again.
An easy A. Slight accent. He does not take attendance. 5 short play responses, 1 in person play response, 1 midterm, 1 final. Play responses are just about your opinions, very simple. Newest textbook version was not necessary. Doesn't use Beachboard.
A lot of people say they love this class because all just reads to you. Well that's all he does, READ. You don't talk about themes, you don't connect different stories, you don't compare to modern movies, you just sit there and listen to him the whole semester. By the time it gets to the midterm you're like ummm... I haven't learned anything.
He's super nice and easy! Midterm and a final both in class essays, but more like long paragraph questions. He likes to ask you creative questions like, "if you could go for drinks with any of the authors we've read, what would you ask himher and why?" Would definitely take his class again! Just write a lot in your anwers you'll get an A.
Dr. Thomas is probably one of the most relaxed and calm teachers I have ever taken. He is very nice and has a british accent. Class is extremely boring. You have a group project, some writing assignments, a midterm and a final. Class is unbelievably easy. Very nice guy. Hard to stay awake sometimes.
If you are not and English major and need to get a GE out of the way without putting in too much effort, this is the class for you. Professor Graham is very lenient, especially with assignment deadlines, and his assignments are very easy, basically as long as your opinion is the same as his, you will get an A. However, YOU WILL NOT LEARN A THING!
He is very funny, super easy. I would take his class again. A group panel. A hand made children book of your choice. No mid-term or final. The textbook is huge, he does read to you but if you want to read you can. There are reading responds. You have to be a strong writer on the responses to do well on. Go to the writing center. Spring 2015
Easiest English class I've ever taken. He never gave any tests nor a final- just typed responses to the stories we would read in class. Didn't take attendance either. However, his grading criteria is not clear & assignments are unlisted. He would often just spring assignments on us in class and they'd be due by the next week. Would take again!
Hilarious British man who assigns no homework, gives no tests and only assigns 3 papers throughout the semester. All we did in class was read short stories, rspnd to it as little or as much as you want and leave. The papers were essentially the same exact thing, only longer. He's a very nice and easygoing guy . Take it for a grade boost.
This class is awesome! Prof Thomas is witty, kind and unbelievably laid-back. NO TESTS, just a short response paper every other week or so on reading done in class. He rarely takes roll but if you skip you might miss him assigning a paper so make sure you have a class member contact. Make sure you have the book and have fun!
He's great!! Super funny and interesting guy. I loved his stories and he loves talking about life w the class. He reads to you for most of the class, and you follow along in the book, and he collects written responses to the stories & poems that were read. No homework, and no tests. Group panel was the major assignment but it's not too difficult.
You don't have to show up to class at all to get an A. As long as it seems like you made an effort in your papers he will give you an A on everything. BUT, if you BS anything, he will give you a Zero on it. He hates when people don't try. So, as long as you seem like you are making an effort, you will have an easy A.
Easiest class ever; can skip class but may miss an assignment since his syllabus is so disorganized. All we did in class was hear him read stories. He's laid-back, funny, and easy grader. Some responses to assigned children's books, a group presentation and a self-created book for the final. I only read the readings we had to do responses on.
I LOVED Prof Thomas. He is hilarious and genuinely loves children's literature. He will spend the class reading to you, and making jokes. Only a few papers based on easy childrens books, one group presentation, and for the final you write a childrens book. No tests. Seem like you're trying. Beware though: HE WILL MAKE THE SAME JOKES OVER AND OVER.
Children's Literature through the eyes of an older male, and I'm being generous. He didn't let students upload work or use the online platform available through the school. Everything hard copy. Have to buy bootleg set from a local printer, dated materials. Lectures featured his innuendo and double entendre with a room full of young women. Yuck.
