best teacher ever . aand trust me i had a grip of techers at southwestern. excellent teacher and teaches his class in a great way and makes it enjoyable. GODD TIMES!
He´s funny, the lectures are good, and he explain everything very good; but you need to read and study a lot for the exams.
Nice Teacher...Very Flexible...
hes a funny and an easy teacher. no homework! he does not care if your absent or late...hes great. you just need to study for tests. if you do, you will pass that class with an A.
great prof.. this was my 2nd time taking astronomy-- last semester I had an awful astronomy teacher here at Southwestern... he is the best astronomy teacher to take here-- this course is difficult but he makes it bearable...
he's really cool! great jokes, he gives you his notes and lets you use a 3x4 inch card where you can put all the info you want for the test! it's very easy to pass
Professor Miller is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. He explains everything so incredibly well, and he makes class interesting. His anecdotes are always relevant yet funny. Take his class!
Great guy
class was interesting but it was hard to understand. he is funny, but was hard. i got a D in that class and attended every class. some dude hardly attended but he got a B in that class. maybe it was me. but his packet it is very helpful. no homework. only exams. attendnace is not mandatory if u knoe
Miller is very cool and is an awesome lecturer. But he was absent almost all semester-we had Johnson subbing and it made the class material a bit confusing as we kept going back & forth between teaching styles. Also, he only grades based on 3 somewhat difficult tests... there is no homework or EC - this is both a good and a bad point.
Difficult class because he is never there-he sends other professors to teach. When he is there it is obvious he loves to teach astronomy, but I get the feeling he doesn't really care about students passing. Some like no homework, etc. but for a class like this you need it-not only to learn/study from but for points. Good lectures when he shows up.
VERY, EASY, JUST STUDY THE NOTES HE GIVES YOU!!!
He is a great teacher, he knows what he is talking about, he's funny and and answers questions. There is no homework, attendence is not mandatory. You'll enjoy his class. He definitely knows his stuff.
if you are thinking of taking this class i recomend you take miller, he gives no homework, he gives lectures that are not boring and he is funny.
By far one of the best Professors I ever had, great lecturer. Very interesting class, you learn a lot of stuff.great great great! take it :D...he is a smart ass kicking teacher
This guy is awesome! He is funny. Has very interesting things to say. Only gives out 3 exams which are fairly easy if you are in class a lot. doesn't care about attendance. He is the best!
pretty easy but get the book you will really need it
this class was difficult. this professor definitely knows his stuff but i didn't do well along with many other students. if you're really interested in astronomy then take him.
I had to drop. he wanted us to get up at dawn each day and document the sunrise and there was a lot of complicated math and stuff. It was a very hard class. He didn't seem very friendly either but I'm sure he really is an expert on the subject.
Labs are fun and easy (mostly). There's some basic algebra but nothing major if you have a calculator. Best of all were the trips to the planetarium. His teaching is clear and concise and he also has a funny sense of humor. Definitely recommend him for lab!
he is kinda funny, the class is easy, if you bother going to class, just pay attention, dont buy the book but show up. only three exams, and all multiple choice. pretty easy, everything is in the booklet. thats a must
This teacher is an amazing teacher. He has excellent explanations for ANY questions you have. He's a no B.S. type of guy which makes him so great. If you don't have common sense and you like to sit and talk or text during class don't take this guy.
Difficult material for non science majors but a good teacher who is passionate about astronomy. If you have to take astronomy, take Miller. He's the best there is at SWC
Very good teacher :) probably one of the best ones at SWC. I had class 3 times a week and he always always make me crack up with his jokes. The tests always had jokes and weird crazy answers. (he likes the chicago Cubs) ["THE SUPER GIANTS!!!"]-prof.Miller
Very knowledgeable in his field! He looks kinda intimidating because of formal attire, but he's actually a very cool professor. Definetely recommend taking Astronomy with him! A+ Professor
probably the best teacher in SWC. knows his stuff VERY well, can teach, and makes learning fun. he was probably my favorite professor in SWC. you dont even need the book, just his packet. there's only 3 tests, and fairly easy tests. take him, you wont regret it
GREAT teacher! Answers all questions w/o B.S. If you're thinking about taking his class TAKE IT! Neither attendance nor textbook are required but it's a good idea to attend & buy his class notes.
Probably the best teacher I had in that school.
This teacher is awesome! I really enjoyed his class and everything he taught. This guy definately brought back the reason why i wanted to pursue astronomy in the first place.
Trust me. Take this class for CREDIT/NO CREDIT! Miller is super cool. Attendance is required but have a friend sign in for you. Makes a difficult subject relatively difficult subject simple. Extremely funny and personable. Just buy his lab notes and you dont need the book. Do not think its a simple class cause you NEED to study. My favorite class!
His class was awesome, I showed up to every lecture, used only a notebook. Of all the great teachers I've had at SWC, he takes the taco. His passion for YOUR education fills the room, definitely worth more than what ur paying. His wit and sarcasm is great. I teared up in the last lecture; go (even if u dont have his class), and u will understand.
Prof, Miller is a very cool teacher, and very good in his field of work. You learn something new every day in his class lectures, and he also has his own brand of humor which made astronomy fun. he provided data for the group that won the nobel prize in 2011; revealing a accelerating expanding universe. Impressive
Interesting/ Knowledgeable/ No homework/ Easy exams
DONT BUY THE BOOK, YOU JUST NEED HIS LECTURE NOTES SOLD IN THE BOOK STORE. I THOUGHT I LIKED ASTRO BUT NOW I HATE IT. USES A SIGN IN FOR ATTENDANCE BUT THEN DOESNT USE IT AFTER THE 2ND TEST. NO HOMEWORK ONLY 3 TESTS BUT THEY ARE HARD EVEN THO U CAN USE A NOTECARD. AVOID HIM. BORING LEACTURES. MY CLASS BASICALLY FAILED.
AWESOME professor! This is, definitely, a worth taking class, and once you're there you won't want to miss any class! Don't buy the textbook just the lecture notes, and try to make your own aside notes too. Mind-blowing class! (:
Only 3 Tests and no homework, perfect class for the smart but lazy student. One of the best professors ever, funny and intelligent. Made astronomy great and his lectures were clear and full of knowledge.
Professor Miller is by far one of the best professors I've had while attending Southwestern. Miller makes his classes very entertaining while maintaining a serious environment. Miller gives three tests for the semester and also provides class notes so passing the class is very doable if you attend the lectures and pay attention.
Mr. Miller is a great professor. He knows the subject and is willing to help you if you didn't understand something. The quizzes are open note.
By far the greatest professor I've had the privilege to learn under. He learned Astronomy from a man who was taught by Einstein, making me and my classmates educational great-grandchildren of the father of theoretical physics.
It's an amazing class, but is hard. You will have to work for it. Only three exams and no extra credit. After second exam about 15 people drop. Make sure you have time to study. 73-86 is a b 86 and up is an a.
Miller is incredibly intelligent and interesting. He makes the subject engaging and is so deeply vested in Astronomy, he makes you wish you majoring in the subject. His tests on the other hand are incredibly difficult. There is no homework or extra credit, just broken dreams. If you can just sit there and absorb info, then this is perfect for you.
Prof. Miller is the man! I am an art major and loved his class. He has wonderful insights about his field and is very knowledgeable. I find that he explains concepts better than Neil Degrasse Tyson. He's pretty funny too. You don't need a book but make sure to take copious notes because all quizzes are open notes. Finals is not tho so study!
Some professors are too cold. Some professors are too hot. This professor is just riight.
He's obviously great at what he does. He knows his stuff. He doesn't curve grades but his grading scale is easier because of the difficulty of his class (if you get a C it's a B in his class). I would recommend him and I have!
Most amazing teacher you will ever have. His lectures are amazing and he explains everything so clearly. The last day of lecture he made the whole class stand up and clap from his speech. There is no homework or quizzes but 3 tests that determine your entire grade. Luckily 60% up is a C. Buy his lecture notes they are extremely helpful and only $8.
More than half of the class failed, it's easy if you study really hard. There is only 3 test, so if you fail one of them you might get a bad grade, very hard class in my opinion. No need to be in class, he doesn't care if you're there, it's your option to learn or not.
Proff Miller is absolutely amazing. He commands so much respect in his classroom, no one is out of line. His class is completely fair, he's not going to get on your case about attendance, but you should miss class at your own risk as the 3 tests that determine your grade are entirely based on the lecture. Just pay attention in class, you'll make it
He used to teach at the Air Force academy, so he's very prim & proper. He knows his stuff. Lectures are boring. Attendance isn't mandatory but that's upon your risk since there are three tests. There are study guides for the tests in the back of his lecture notes. He's funny when he wants to be. I'm not into astro but I'd take his class again!
this course is difficult but the way professor miller conducted the lectures helped me understand the material well. he is very well organized, speaks very clearly and does not put any surprises when it comes to the quizzes and tests. you do have to put your time into this course, however. overall, i really enjoyed him as a professor.
Mr. Miller is very knowledgeable in astronomy, and he has amazing lectures. I enjoyed the class but the 3 tests you have were extremely difficult. Even if you studied, it seems as though the questions were reworded so differently, it made you question the material you just reviewed. Half the class failed unfortunately, not so easy.
FIRST: DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOK. He has his exact lecture notes in the library for $8. SECOND: Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to pass you probably want to go. THIRD: There's 3 tests. That is it. That can either be really good or really bad, depending on how you test. He's passionate about the subject but most students fail.
Without a doubt the best professor at SWC. Very Knowledgeable and inspiring. Book isn't required all you need are his lectures notes, which can be purchased at the book store for less than $10. Don't skip class, pay attention during lecture, and study a few days before the tests and you'll be fine. I would definitely recommend him.
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS IF I WERE YOU
Professor Miller is a very knowledgable man and you learn a lot of interesting stuff in his class that open your eyes to how vast the universe truly is. The textbook isn't required and neither is attendance (except for the 3 test days). He's very traditional and laid back, you just show up and pay attention. Tests are challenging but not impossible
Sorry to hear this, unfortunately his lecture notes and his 3 tests were not tht accurate.1st do not buy a textbook, really what if they are appear and if you have your study and says some of the materials we have not discuss may apeear in the test and students want to get 100%.Nothing from his syllabus but only cares about the tests
His class is very interesting. I didn't get anything about his lectures. Difficult class. I would take his class again because I loved it even though I failed and I'm pretty sure I would failed it again.
Professor Miller's lectures are inspiring especially the way he ended the lecture... he had everyone shook and he started tearing up a little. I don't know if I'm just saying this because I'm interested in astronomy but you really learn a lot in his lectures; test are OK they are not that hard if you pay attention in class.
2 Midterms 1 final & weekly chapter quizzes. For an A Do and understand the hw questions until you can do it without looking to prepare for quizzes and exams. I also selected a handful of questions from the book to practice with. Work hard from the beginning you will do well. No need to drive an hour a day to take physics at another college.
great guy, funny and he really cares about his students. you have to read a lot but if you study the notes the test should be easy. He is insanely smart super interesting person.
Smart, funny, and intellectual professor really enjoyed his lectures and jokes but your grade is based on 3 exams only doesn't give homework or extra credit if you study hard enough you will pass, but the exams are difficult
I love this profesor but your grades are only based on the 3 exams you take which makes it harder! I would consider taking him again though
He is a very respectable and intelligent man, who is extremely passionate about astronomy. Lectures were insightful and easier to comprehend with the PPT supplementing the notes. Grades are reliant on only three tests. So get his lecture notes and do the study guide in the back of it! His tests are difficult, but like I said do the study guide.
From the first day you can tell he genuinely loves astronomy, and from that you at least get some re assurance that your professor is someone passionate about his job. Class is definitely tough, he curves on a grade but it only shows you how tough the material is. I would take again, be ready to read!
Astronomy 100 w/ Prof. Miller is difficult & only does 3 tests which are very difficult. Make sure to take detailed notes in lectures & do the study guide in the back of the lecture book. He is a great teacher, but it was hard to focus and stay interested in this class.
In my opinion, this professor was the best out of all the other physics professors for 272. He makes sure to be very reasonable with his grading and gives partial credit if he knows they understand the concept. I think this is his first time teaching 272 and I learned way more about physics than with other professors. Plus he makes jokes!
Best professor for 270, along w/ Lee. Three 1 hr exams consist of recent chapters covered & no cumulative final. For most chapters there is hw and a 25 min quiz. Usually we had a week to do the hw in mastering physics. He does do lectures on zoom on the days class meets but attendance is optional. Textbook can easily be found online. Take him.
Prof. Miller is a nice man but a bit unreasonable. If you have to assign a great curve to your grading that means something is off. His grading is 73-85 B, 86-100 A etc... You have three tests (if you are lucky, I had only 2) that account for your grade. He doesn't really go into depth on concepts that are not common sense. Very disappointing.
Absolutely terrible! Zoom lectures were boring as he just read off (slowly) the lecture notes he had posted on canvas. There are only THREE exams (each worth 33% of your total grade). The notes you take honestly do not help for the exams. Gives 1 minute per question (50 minutes, 50 questions). Don't take him no matter what!
Very difficult class. His online course only gives 3 exams and all were 50mins. No extra credit, no homework, and only 1 study guide. If I hadnt passed his first 2 exams, I definitely would of failed. Save yourself the struggle and DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE COURSE!
Since the beginning of the semester professor Miller is really straightforward and clear about the course and grading(only 3 tests ). So if you are a person that is not a good test taker then I would recommend to either study really hard and take good notes or just take another course. I took it online where we would meet 2 days a week on zoom.
This professor is very straightforward, you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches which is nice. He gives great lectures, but his timing for his 3 hourly exams are ridiculously short for the amount of questions he gives. This is definitely a hard class to pass.
This professor was extremely professional and it was clear that he knew what he was teaching. However, he failed to cover some of the later chapters- so I missed some of the most important material. His lectures were also sometimes dry. There were only two exams, but he doesn't believe in extra credit so if you fail either test you're out of luck.
Great lecturer but tough class. Grade is mostly made up of chapter quizzes and exams. Homework is a small part of your grade, doing it is really helpful in passing the course. He goes over everything on test after he returns them in class so you know what you missed. Equation sheet given for quizzes/exams. Would recommend.
Great professor! loves astronomy, and gives amazing lectures. Grade is based off of ONLY three exams which makes it a bit difficult but if you show up to all the lecture, take notes, and study the tests will be much easier to pass. He's amazing and will help if you ask though he is a bit intimidating at first. Ended up really enjoying his class.
Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy way out for physics. He is a very charismatic teacher but that does not help when the tests seem impossible at some times. You will have to put a lot of effort even just to pass the class. He did not round our grades at the end for a bunch of students so don't be suprised.
Alot of independent study, and felt lost during most of the lecture. He assigns a ton of homework, and its tough because it does not give you any help. I would not recommend taking his class for physics, please look for a different teacher that can actually help you learn the concepts.
His lectures are amazing and inspirational, he knows how to clearly answer any question.
When it comes to physics, Professor Miller gives you the tools and shows you how to apply them in what sometimes can be a very perplexing and easily misguiding topic. The rest is onto you. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he is very understanding and makes physics a much more pleasant and less confusing learning experience. Office hrs help a lot.
Miller explains everything perfectly and will answer any question you have. Honestly my favorite class that I've ever taken as a student.
If you don't like tests or struggle to take tests in general, that is all we did in his class. 3 tests, no homework, no assignments, based on lectures purely, lecture slides sort of help go over, but mostly based on one's notes and attendance, the 3 tests determine our overall grade. His grading is tough as well and NO extra credit.
Professor Miller is an engaging lecturer, and his class is best suited for those who attend regularly. If you're looking for an easy credit, this isn't the class for you, as understanding the concepts of astronomy requires being present. It's surprising how many people skip! Fortunately, I learned this early on which resulted my final grade as a B.
If you're working and attending class do yourself a favor and avoid ASTR 201. Though honest about failure of planning and wonky class structure; save yourself the headache and money.
Our ASTR201 class was his first so near the end we were behind on the material however it wasn't that bad because if you just show up and pay attention to him you would understand the concepts easily. Grades are based on TESTS and HW. For the hw, they are more conceptual, and the tests were honestly lightwork as long as you memorize the equations
Despite the zeal displayed by the first review for this course; I can assure you that working full-time, and taking this class as a GE is not recommended. Heard a student drop from one of his Physics courses while taking this one too. If you don't want to become a “career student” and are trying to become gainfully employed don't take. Bleh.
ASTR 201 is a superb launch into Astronomy for the layman or the aspiring scientist. Miller lectures with passion and creates an atmosphere of proactive learning. Some may be reluctant to tackle the workload given their schedule, but for those willing to relinquish their pride and diligently inquire you will succeed. God Speed
Professor Miller is absolutely hilarious, super nice guy and like I mentioned, very funny. However, he is very lecture heavy, and that's pretty much the entire class which I know was hard on me and can be hard for many students. There are no homework assignments which means the class is based on three tests.
Whatever you do, don't take his class. Unless you want to fail. Your grade is only based one 3 exams that you take during the semester and his class is super lecture heavy. There is also no extra credit offered. By far the worst class i've taken.
Expect to whittle down nearly fifty pages of notes for three exams. The jokes he makes are a hit or miss. In lieu of true learning, one must listen to ramblings that are incessant and that provide no foresight into these exams. Your GPA will be akin to that of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Graded on a curve is the only appeal. Hooyah? No, thanks.
Scatterbrain. Any hope for true engagement to hear the professor share anything with you in office hours? Sorry, there are too many also concerned about the structure of his other classes. Excited? Sorry for the letdown. Astronomy is observational, yes? I've observed a dwindling hope for this professor's ability to facilitate a proper course.
Astronomy is a SCIENCE, it's deeply intertwined with PHYSICS--one of the hardest degrees out there; The exam questions are conceptual. You can't just take notes and call it a day for this class, because just like any STEM course, you need to put in the work. Miller is exactly who you should take if you are interested in astronomy and want to learn.
Miller's lectures segue into the brilliance of celestial phenomena. You will face adversity—graded by only three exams. This fellow is modest, brilliant, and a true public servant. These assessments are beyond the scope of rote memorization.
prof grant is amazing, hes really funny and you can tell he is extremely interested in what he teaches. the only thing is that your grade is only based off of 3 exams. there is no midterm or final. pay attention and then youll be good, and try not to miss classes or else there will be blind spots in the exams
