Hes not that bad. He doesn't take any ****, but he is amazingly smart and you can't get anything over on him. If you want to learn take him. I learned alot. There are alot of notes, but he gives you reciew sheets for the test and goes over the material.
He's a teacher and he teaches. If you're here to learn then he's your guy. He gives a lot of reading, but I have never learned and studied for one class as I did this. He's a nice guy with a jerkish act. It's all an act, don't let him scare you.
He comes off like a ass but he knows his SH*T. I'ts very simple, do your work and you will do fine, screw around and you fail.
HORRIBLE MAN...hardest core b/c there is soooo much work...400 pg book for the final, research paper, reg book plus printouts for the test...totally not worth taking this..brings down your gpa definately...half the class failed out or dropped out.
He is a hard teacher but very fair, lets u know up front what he is about, lowered my GPA but I did learn a lot and makes my other classes seem sooo much easer!!I do not recommend for people looking for an easy A, but you do get more bang for your buck!!!
class seems impossible at first, then the test wasnt that bad and he is and ok grader on essays, good chance to do well in it.
seems hard, but test are easy im a junior with 63 credits and he was my first A.
Definetely one of the smartest professors at Hofstra but sure as hell not the easiest. I wont get an A, but I have learned a great deal. The class wont do wonders for my GPA but still worth taking if you're in college to learn.
He's one of the best professors at Hofstra. He's so easy, but I do fine. I'm not a 4.0 student but I get very well grades. If you can write well his 2 papers are easy A's. His tests are a little tricky but he gives review sheets that cover just about all.
Dr. Saff is a good prof. Hes exams are hard and grades really hard, but if you are willing to learn, you will learn a lot. DO NOT take this class to get an easy grade or core creidt, I PROMISE he will be your hardest class for the semester.I got a B+.
The most I have learned in any Hofstra course! Very demanding but well worth the sacrifice. Pay close attention to directions for essays and participate. Through his experiences and knowledge he will truly change your perspective of the world.
very tough class for morons looking for an easy A. Great class for intellects looking to learn something while they are in college. yes, you actually learn in a hofstra class!
He seems mean at first but its just an act..really nice guy the test arent that hard although the first day of class he will say that they are, it is a lot of work but you will learn alot!
He will increase your knowledge by alot. He will make you so glad to be American, based on how bad some other countries have it, but you'll also see how if we don't fix our small problems the country will go right down the drain. Warning: GPA will go down
He isn't as difficult as people say, just do all of the work and don't save the NY Times project to the last minute. He really knows his stuff. only one problem if you and him disagree on something he is very stubborn and if you are actually wrong he will make you look stupid in front of the class.
hands down the best professor at Hofstra. Very intelligent. the course is demanding, A LOT OF READING and INFORMATION. an easy A, but you need to put forth time and effort. i learned more in this class than any other class. interesting class, plus he's funny. i like him a lot.
This professor expects a completely unrealistic and unreasonable amount of effort from his students. Not only is he insensitive to the students in his class but he also has a cocky and rude attitude. Take this class if you plan on dedicating night and day to it.
he knows a lot about the subject and really wants his students to learn. take him if youre serious about learning
I thought that this was an interesting subject learning about "Urbanization in the Developing World", but he made it seem like hell!!! He really expects a lot out of his students... like he is our only professor. And he is VERY sarcastic. Don't take this class if you have attitude problems!!
honestly stay away...intersting class but so hard...one long midterm, one essay, one long final where you have to memorize a city...ridiculous amount of information for core class...very hard!!! don't take for gpa
I hate this guy. Avoid him at all costs! And if you can't, don't plagerize...he will catch you.
I've recently transferred and I have been to 3 colleges. Dr. Saff has been my favorite professor of all times. I miss him.
He is arrogant. I had to drop the class because I couldn't take his superior attitude problem anymore. He makes it perfectly clear that he does not want to teach you, in fact he told us that directly. The class is a bore, he wants nothing to do with helping your grades, and he encourages us to drop out of college, true story. Avoid him if you can.
Dr. Saff is a great professor. His class is very hard work. What you put into it is what you'll get out of it. He's extremely sarcastic and funny. If you're looking for an easy A don't take him, but if you would like to actually get an education for the $100k+ you're giving to hofstra, take this professor!
He tries not to teach you facts and figures from a book. But it’s a story a meaning to the numbers on the page. It is an interesting class and it can take you out of the other mundane classes. OH the puchline lots of readings and you get the grade you deserve nothing more as it should be.
this is not an easy A!!If your looking for an easy class look somewhere else. the class was hard and he was demanding.u must be in class taking notes or else u'll be lost. Theres alot of material that he covers and he puts alot of stuff on blackboard regularly, its ALOT of reading. He's nice once u get passed all of the work.
failed to give proper instructions, pop up quizzes, always stared away from important topics very arrogant. asked irrelevant questions on his exams, topics not covered or clearly understood
Dr. Saff is a great professor. He's EXTREMELY approachable and very intelligent. He wants the students to participate and show up for class. While that's not a guaranteed A in the class or on the exams, it is a huge advantage. He is also very good looking for an older guy. The accent doesn't hurt.
Great professor, extremely smart and approachable.
Good teacher. Take him!
Professor Saff gives his students the grade they deserve. If you want to learn and are willing to put in the work, you'll get an A.
He was the hardest professor I've ever had. he tells the class that he doesn't feel like teaching us most of the time. It was a difficult class during the semesterfor me had to drop it.
ECO majors: do not take GEOG135 as an economics elective. the class is basically a survey of stuff you should already know about the world. saff is incredibly arrogant and makes offensive comments just to gauge your reaction. we really didn't do anything all semester. you're much better off taking an actual ECO elective and learning something.
Saff is very good. If you want to take a class and not do any work and get an A, don't take a class with Saff. Saff tries to intimidate you with the fact that his tests are so hard and the essays and questions are bad but really it's just like any other class.
he is the worst professor I have ever had in my whole experience in college. he thinks he is the smartest person alive who can never be wrong and he is extremely arrogant. i dropped this class after 3 days of having him as a teacher NEVER TAKE HIM !! i don't know what the people who said he was good were thinking!
Brilliant man. He loves to kid around, he''s very witty, and answers student's questions to the best of his ability. For all the negative comments about him, those students simply did not prepare themselves for this class. It is demanding, but very rewarding. Every class was incredibly interesting. Take him.
Excellent Professor. Has great knowledge regarding subject matter, transfers that to students. Extremely clear and detailed. Very interesting class "even in the summer". Must recommend.
I will say this. I have been at Hofstra for 4 semesters and have taken 21 classes. I have received an A in 19 of them. I took this class with Dr. Saff my Fall semester of Freshman year. I did not receive an A. Honestly, the class didn't make much sense to me. It's based on a midterm (40%) and a final (60%). He was condescending. Avoid if possible.
NOTE: im interested in the subject (its my major)funny professor though he kinda teased students in a way especially me because of my age. i never read the book. attend every class if possible and take notes. if you really dont understand KEEP asking! he likes it when you participate. study for the final! and talk to the student aid if there is one
He is very arrogant but will admit when he is wrong (which is rare) but fortunately he has the knowledge to back his 'tude. He gives you a copy of his slides. His tests are hard but his study guides are very specific. He expects a lot from his students but he provides the tool to deliver.
Very cool teacher. Funny and informal in the classroom. Class was by no means easy but it was possible to do well if you put in the effort. Very interesting and worthwhile class.
No hw, no papers, 3 essay exams that are not hard. Wants you to read a book and the final is based on it, just skim it and you'll be fine. Got an A in the class. He got mixed reviews but is not bad. He likes to kid around at times and he's not mean or rude, its just his humor. Take this class! Fulfilled my IS requirement and it was interesting too
This guy should be the villain in the next james bond movie. On a serious note he's tough so only take him if you have to and make sure you study but if you put in the work you will get a good grade and you will learn a lot go to his office and talk to him hes actually a pretty cool guy and too smart to be teaching he probably making the death star
Took this course online over summer. Worst experience I've had. He did not answer emails when I needed help and did not clarify what I was doing wrong. I had a grad from his program help me with assignments and still ended up getting a C on the paper with no comments made on it. I would have learned a lot more had I not been so frustrated with him.
Dr. Saff is truly keeps student's best interest as his number one priority. He is really knowledgable about globalization and is passionate about educating regarding the benefits and failures of globalization and its impact on humans. I learned lots of information from Dr. Saff and am looking forward to taking his class again in the spring.
Never have I encountered a teacher who puts a "warning" on top of every piece of literature. I wouldn't recommend taking this instructor because 1) he has vague, outdated, pre-made lecture material. 2) lacks the basic amount of proactivity necessary to make your online class an engaging experience. 3) excessive amount of work for a January course.
Took this for an online winter class, worst professor ever. Tests are 2 hours long and impossible to finish unless you know the questions ahead of time and write your responses before it. His reading material is very outdated and hard to get interested in. He's also a very tough grader and won't give you any kind of partial credit. Don't take him!
Absolutely horrible.
Dr Saff doesn't beat around the bush(men). Read the book. Prepare your test answers before walking into the exams. Don't wing it based on what you've studiedretained. He has high expectations, and he'll weed out the people he thinks aren't making an effort. He's very knowledgeable, at times funny, do what he expects and you'll be fine. Good luck.
If you want to learn something and save your GPA, don't bother taking him. Extremely arrogant without reason and has no desire to actually foster an environment in which both the student and professor benefit. Awful professor. My recommendation : choose a different professor.
His exams were impossibleee to finish unless you know the questions ahead of time
Pretty fair. Globalization is very relevant for our future. Good class.
Took his class about global film and the US economy. Really enjoyed the class. He Wanted participation and discussion. Interesting movies, a good experience.
Took this as online summer course. About half the grade was participation on Blackboard and 2 exams. Got the questions in advance and if you prepared it was not too hard to do well - it is open book! Learned a lot, but defiantely not an easy A. But you can do well if you do the reading.
Great Professor, do the work and you will get a good grade. Gives review before tests. Very knowledgeable and the class is interesting!
Homeworks and exams did take effort, but they were completely doable. You learn a lot in this class and Dr. Saff is very knowledgeable and helpful about the topics presented. I took him twice -- once in class and once online. He is very approachable outside. I saw him quite often during office hours always with fantastic results.
I took him online and was nervous at first. He responded pretty quickly to any question and truly cared which made the course stress free. If he appreciates your efforts, he will go out of his way to tell you so, which was a first for me. The workload wasn't bad but you really need to keep up with the reading, assignments and discussion boards.
Dr. Saff is interesting and funny in class. His office hours were so very helpful in so many ways I wouldn't know where to begin. From day one whether declaring my major to study abroad to planning for grad school. I feel like I planned out my life in his office.
Thanks for the A!!!!!
He's Tony the Tiger Grrrrrrrreat. Ditto on the A - thank you Dr. Saff.
It's either you love him or you hate him. Very arrogant, but very intelligent. Do not take him for this course if you are a beginner in economics. He sort of assumes that you know the jargon already in order to discuss globalization.
He's too arrogant for a professor, his tests and homework are tough. Worst online class ever with outdated information that was too long to even read.
Great online class. Really enjoyed the summer class, learned a lot and he was very helpful. Gave extra credit opportunities. As long as you put in the work you can do well.
This class was horrible. I would have curled myself in a ball in the corner if I didn't have some notes from a friend who took this course before. Maybe because it was Summer III so everything was squished into a couple of weeks? Who knows. It was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I would not recommend this to a friend.
He expects you to do the work, but encourages you to do well. It was my first online class and I enjoyed it.
Liked the class, he gave lots of help and extra credit. First time I took a online class and he made it easy, lots of guidance. As others say, do the work and you will be fine. Interesting too.
Great prof, just slightly dull content. but you must listen and take good notes because the lecture slides are dot points and do not have much detail. midterm 20% and paper 30% were ok but for the final 40%, it really matters if you've done the readings or not. Participation in discussions count 10%. Tony the Tiger GREAT in my book.
My favorite professor ever! He helped me plan out my life, the Universe and everything. Thank you Dr. Saff!
I thought the course was cool and interesting. Learned a lot. I would take Dr. Saff again. He has a dry sense of humor and really knows the material. Class was fun and interesting.
Just the best class to take! Readings and movies are very interesting and enjoyable. I actually learned a lot about international cinema and its history. The noir films and spaghetti westerns were a kick and a half.
I absolutely loved having Saff as a professor. He is so intelligent, funny, and kind! His class was so interesting and I learned so much. The class was not easy, but you just need to pay attention in class and go to the review sessions and you will do well. The entire grade is based on three exams.
Professor Saff really does know what he's talking about. I'm sure I would love him if I wasn't in an INTRO course. He expects us to know everything that he does and doesn't really explain the concepts in depth because it's assumed you know all the terms and policies ahead of time. As a senior i'd love him, not as a freshman. Thank God for my TA.
Such a weird professor, of course he knows alot and is passionate about what he is teaching but he makes it like nothing is much more important in this world than geography and people who study science or are science majors are just stupid lol, he is annoying but a good teacher I suppose
Saff is not easy and expects a lot from you, but he knows his stuff and class can be fun. Lots of reading though.
One of the best professors I had at Hofstra. Had to earn my grades, but worth it.
I absolutely loveee the global studies department at Hofstra and being the head of the department, I was a bit concerned about the fact that I was taking a class of his during my freshman year. Now that I'm almost a month into the Into to GS class, I have no regrets :) He's so knowledgeable about what he says. Definitely taking him again!
One of the BEST Professors I ever had. VERY Friendly. Uses common sense and humor to teach the course and bring understanding to the subject. HIGHLY recommend him for all Global Study classes.
I had professor Saff for GS 001 and GEOG 145, and he was so helpful in both courses! Make sure you attend class, and do your assignments and you'll be fine. Readings are on the tests! He's so funny and nice. He has been a reference for me twice! He genuinely cares for your future.
Dr. Saff is great. His class starts out hard; you will have to read a lot to meet his high expectations. However, he is very knowledgeable, and will help you however he can. Your class will come together and you will feel like you have all been lifelong friends. I will definitely take more of his classes.
I love Saff. He is a knowledgeable man and very friendly with his students, but expects you to understand the information you read about outside of class. (He won't know if you don't, though.) He leaves a lot of time for questions and will answer anything we ask, no matter how obscure or obvious. His tests do not count wrong answers and grades fair
Professor Saff, while he originally seems intimidating, is a very knowledgeable professor who knows what he's doing. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures are what will get you through the three grades you have in the class. As long as you do the work and make a little bit of an effort, you'll enjoy his class.
He class is not useful.
Class is interesting and slides/notes are available on Blackboard. Good professor.
While all the material presented in class/in the textbook may seem overwhelming, his study guides are very helpful in narrowing it down to the most important concepts. Classes can be a little dull at times, but he encourages participation and is funny. Tests are fairly straightforward and I learned a lot!
Challenging at times, but well worth it. Saff is a (sadly) dying breed of prof that will make you work for your grade, but will expand your knowledge and challenge beliefs constantly. You'll examine lots of opposing views, argue, read books, write books, and go through the stages of grief, but you'll come out more knowledgeable than you came in.
I really like this class because the prof. and content is very thought-provoking and interesting.
He only gives two grades exams if you do bad your done, and he grades horribly. I didn't get higher then a 60 on any of my exams, he gives a short period of time to write them, theres no way to get a 100 because you can't even finish the exam in the time your given. I took this class cause it seemed fun. do not take it! he doesn't care to help you.
He assigns lengthy articles and slides without further elaboration and his tests are rather difficult as well. If you take him, make sure to schedule time to properly read his material as well as working on that 4 page final paper ahead of time. It's what I would call a sink or swim course... where unfortunately most students are sinkers.
Classes are good and he puts the lectures online. Gives study guides that make the exams clear. He takes questions in class and likes participation. The class is also relevant and interesting and he is not biased to any view.I would take him again,
exams were very difficult and gives no feedback on exam. does drop lowest grade but is intimidating and does not give answers to questions you ask. would not recommend this class
He is very direct and ordered. You do the work, follow directions and it is not hard to do well. Drops the lowest grade and gives study guides and has review sessions. Also really funny and available for advising and to answer questions. Second class with him.
No complaints, except I guess that he does not end class early or cancel any classes. Only joking, good prof though and I learnt a lot. Interesting for a quantitive reasoning class.
I think he said that he writes all the bad reviews on RMP himself to get less bad students. So don't believe the bad reviews, as he is pretty good. Sorry to go against his interests, but I liked him.
He was extremely funny & his class was very interesting
3 assignments and one is dropped but they are like a minimum 12 hours worth of work each. They require lots of writing and lots of reading exactly what is on the slides. There is little room for error and he is an extremely harsh grader.
Prof Saff is a true visionary. Good lectures, class discussions, and an engaging teaching style, He transforms complex ideas into easy concepts. His passion for the subject matter is contagious and we are encouraged to explore and think critically. You get out what you put in, worth the effort.
The grading guidelines are clear and the content is broken down into easily digestible modules. His class is very easy to succeed in, but it is also very time consuming. Cons: he is extremely pretentious and passive aggressive. If he THINKS you don't care, he will just be straight up mean to you. Be ready to brown-nose if you take him.
He's very hit-or-miss. If you ask questions, he's great, but his sense of humor is an acquired taste and sometimes comes off more passive-aggressive. Tests aren't too bad as long as you prepare with the study guide. Always come to class with a question, and show up on time.
Professor Staff is an amazing instructor. His lectures are informative and inspirational plus he has a great sense of humor. He is kind, funny and very much respected. But if you DO NOT study, you will receive a low grade. You must be interested and attentive in class and make sure to read through all the modules, understand it and ASK questions :)
Most strict grader possible, lowers your score by a letter grade if you don't post an introductory post to the class which caused me to get a worse grade. Graded by few things
Honestly one of the best professors I have had. He is really relaxed, and will help you if you need. He really does care
He cares about his students even if they don't notice. He wants them to succeed but will not do the work for them since he knows they're smart. He wants students to ask questions about anything and tries to keep lectures topical. It's not a challenging class. Just show up and take notes. He has very dry humor, so don't be surprised by his jokes.
Saff knows his stuff, and is a solid professor. However, he feels fit to teach more advanced courses and not an intro class. He teaches well but there is way too much stuff on the slides, which he expects you to look at all of. Only 3 exams so put effort into those. Overall, pretty solid. Enthusiastic about the material, but not for everyone.
I questioned my sanity in this class. The topic itself is very heavy to digest because there is so much information, you will definitely learn in this class. 3 tests, he drops the lowest score, participation heavy. Passive aggressive.Lenient. Dry humor- I found very funny. So much reading. No excuses come to class! Show you care.Wonderful professor.
Prof. Saff is honestly what I would expect for a department chair, but he abuses his power. He is very cynical when speaking to students and just thinks we are all well-off and our parents are paying the tuition bill. It is clear he doesn't care about his students, encouraging me to drop the class if I was legitimately trying after receiving a 70%.
Very interesting lectures. Teaches information that you'll actually end up using in the real world. Only graded on three tests which could be overwhelming to some. Drops the lowest test grade but is a tough grader. If you participate consistently and show up to class, he'll give you a grade boost. It's a tough class but you really do learn a lot.
Professor Grant was very disappointing. He often talked down to us in class in a very demeaning way. He was extremely biased in his lectures and language and often made it boring in class and difficult to learn. I would not recommend him to anyone and would advise everyone to stay away from his classes.
you really need to WORK for your grade. I ended with an A- and I was constantly studying and reviewing. he's not the best teacher so I self taught myself about 90% of the material. he's funny in class and picks on people (he's very sarcastic). he didn't really do anything. he lectured slides that were posted on canvas.
Lectures are fun and you learn a lot. He sometimes, kinda, goes off topic. One time he was speaking about how and why to become a plumber! But he related how this would protect you from outsourcing of jobs - so comes back to topic of the class. I did learn much from this class. He's a chill guy and would recommend.
PHENOMENAL professor. Made the class real because of his experience working in urban planning. Brought positive vibes and great thoughts to the classroom. Taught me so much not only for the sake of exams but for LIFE and my CAREER. Also, he's HILARIOUS. 3 exams (Study! can be hard if not prepared). Don't buy the book. Take him!
Would not recommend if you just need distribution credit, his classes are insane and you really have to work to get the grade you want. He knows his stuff but if you're the type to miss class or not take notes it will effect your grade heavily. 3 tests and he drops the lowest grade. He also gives participation/attendance extra credit.
avoid prof at all cots. very hard to learn, his lines have very little words, its mostly him talking so its hard to take notes. there are 3 tests, all very hard. final you have to write 12 pages in class with no notes. he is very harsh and doesn't seem interested in helping you. I would not take him again.
My favorite class my freshman year. Now I am ready to graduate. His expectations were clear, and he wasnt a difficult grader. Very understanding of students needs and a very interesting lecturer. Knows a lot about geography.
Professor Saff is one of the best professors I have had to date! He cares about his students & has so much passion for global studies... it makes the class that much more enjoyable. As long as you attend lecture & put in effort into his tests you will pass the class with flying colors. I could not recommend Saff & his class enough!!!!!!
Professor Saff is an incredible teacher. His class is interactive and he is extremely knowledgeable. He is understanding of students circumstances. I have learned so much in an intro level course.
Professor Saff is a passionate and knowledgeable guy. I learned much from his lectures and enjoyed conversations with him outside of class during office hours. The class is based solely on 3 exams, but he drops the lowest grade if you do well on the other 2, fair and clear-cut system. Would take him again.
Dr. Saff is an excellent professor and this course was very rewarding and sparked a lot of curiosity surrounding global systems. The class is challenging, but that's how college should be and it's not challenging not to the point where you are putting in an unreasonable amount of work. Come to class, take notes, and pay attention and you will pass.
Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
I for one thoroughly enjoyed his class. He encourages open discussion, debate and hearing viewpoints from students. He keeps it real, has a ton of wisdom and has high energy. I would highly recommend.
Very interesting online class. His notes and media was interesting to watch and overall you learn a lot about different urban problems in poor countries. Not too difficult to do well, gives extra credit opportunities.
Don't take this class. Very tough grader
Really mean guy. Not going to help your GPA
This class is challenging but rewarding.
Struggled as a very smart student. Wouldnt recommend taking this class.
easy peasy lemon squeezy
Doesn't do a lot of teaching yet expects alot.
He is an amazing professor. He is passionate and insightful and his lectures are amazing. there is a lot to read and you have to read to get a good grade. But honestly, this was one of the best classes I have taken. Not good choice for slackers, you have to do the work and unlike some other professors he never cancelled any classes or ended early.
You will learn a lot about the subject and Prof. Saff is very knowledgable and caring. There are only 3 exams, lowest score dropped, and no other work. Definitely do the readings and pay attention in class because that may pop up on the tests. You MUST be interested and willing to work for your grade or you will not pass.
Did this as a online summer class. He is clear on what he expects and if you do the material you can do well. Seems a lot at first but his study guides really shows what you need to study. Well organized class and offers extra credits. You also learn a lot about urban issues and cities.
Only take if you prefer a lower GPA
super tough grading.
Saff is legit the best. I'd always wanted to learn about global issues and took this class last semester and honestly I have zero regrets. This class completely changed how I see the world and my future in general. He has a lifetime of experience in this field. He really cares about his students.
I wouldn't wish a class this hard upon my worst enemy
He has definitely been my favorite professor this year, and I'm super glad I decided to take his course. I really appreciate that I know what is expected of me in this class, and that he doesn't overcomplicate the material.
I took Dr. Saff's online course for Intro to GS. It was an incredibly in-depth class with lots of readings and documentaries. Every piece he assigns has a lot of concepts you have to learn, but it was incredibly engaging and I really learned a lot. He grades off of 3 exams, but they are super easy and lots of extra credit. Just time yourself well!
Do not take if you want a good grade and a professor that cares. Although he is clear on what he expects, he just asks for too much.
