Grant is a really great guy. You can tell he loves teaching! Loved having him for ph212
Grant has an aura of superiority above all other students. He's not very down to earth and struggles to find his footing in lectures. Overall, the PH211-213 series with him was hard to follow in lectures which in turn made the quizzes difficult. This course was great conceptually but hard to follow mathematically.
Any of the physics classes Grant teaches are a nightmare. The 4-point grading scale he has implemented makes knowing your grade impossible unless he releases a graded projection which is almost never accurate(uses substituted grades). Grant seemly holds himself in high regard, dismisses students' concerns, and is rigid and inflexible as a professor
I had Grant for PH212 and 213, and once I figured out his teaching style and the way the class was set up, I really liked him as a professor. The course is difficult, and the "flipped" lectures aren't great but if you participate in class it's doable. He is also willing to help outside of class and explains concepts very clearly.
The flipped class style is so bad, and the practice midterm examples are not helpful whatsoever. The homework assignments are doable just takes some time and hours in the Wormhole or in his office hours. I would try to avoid him if possible.
Expected most of learning to come from textbook. Large disconnect between textbook (expensive + required), class material, hw, and midterms (3 of them and a final). Lectures are confusing and he tends to skip over his work. Zero energy and somewhat condescending. Grant and Rebecka teach the same, so until OSU hires new professors, good luck!
Lectures weren't really related to $120 textbook or HW. Most learning is on your own time due to flipped lecture style. Never really understood materials and Grant didn't present it very well. Seems kind of arrogant but available regularly outside of class. Also, three midterms and a final with practice exams unrelated to the real exam material.
Grant seems to understand the content but does a very underwhelming job teaching. reads slides word for word and adds very little value to the class. Homeworks are unrealistic and the tests do not line up properly with the covered material. Avoid this guy seriously. FWIW:The class avg for the final was a failing grade.
Extremely incompetent.
I think a lot of the negative reviews are just from the fact that the 21x series isn't good. Way too much HW and pre class assignments and lectures can sometimes feel completely useless. I think he knows what he's doing its just that the class is set up terribly and causes extreme amounts of stress.
Although there is a lot of assignments throughout the class I feel like his lectures are educational and can tell he really wants students to learn. Written hw are difficult but he is always willing to help. Quizzes arent too difficult and he drops your lowest as well as other assignments.
Grant is a nice professor who tries to help his students, but he isn't the best teacher and he understands that the PH21X series is a mess. He uses a reverse lecture style, making it impossible for students who haven't taken MTH 252 to do any work in class. He skips over algebra, reads slides word for word, and isn't able to clearly communicate.
Don't learn much in lectures, half the time he gets things incorrect and is corrected by students. Seems disinterested in teaching. Caters to a certain group of students, while everyone else is sort of brushed off quickly. Seems annoyed in class when people ask questions. Overall its the department not him, but still his attitude stinks.
Grant is a very good lecturer and tries to make sure students understand the content instead of just rushing through. He's really good with answering emails, usually within a day. He takes students' feedback about the course seriously, which is nice. Lowest grade for quizzes is dropped.
Incredible waste of time.
The learning material provided is frequently unclear and there are not enough example problems. Grant is a nice guy, but can be hard to communicate with.
Not a great lecturer and his writing is rather awful, so notes are difficult to read. You have to do most of learning on your own outside of class. The quizzes are very hard, but the grading system makes it possible to still do well in the class.
He teaches fine, I guess. He's very open to asking questions in class and you can meet with him outside of class fairly easily, but he's just okay at lecturing. Most of my beef with this class is because of the awfulness that is the OSU physics department (they need to be tried by the Hague). Still, Dr. Skinner is probably a better option.
He is very lazy
Do not take his classes
Hate this guy, his grading scale is TERRIBLE. An 80% is a C and a 78% is a C-?!?!?!?!?!??! Like who doe's that, like ACTUALLY. He doesn't really care about his students. If you take physics from spring-winter, I would say take it with Skinner or Paul if you can, unfortunately Sherer was the only prof available for 213 rn. I absolutely HATE this guy
Can create a challenging environment to learn through mistakes, as he often reprimanded and complained about us. His lectures were often confusing, and the exams were much more difficult than any practice problems done in class, homework, studio, or lab.
Terrible, 30 percent are quizzes and average were 70 percent. It also means half the class is failing since it's an 80 for a C. Has a big attitude and always acts like he cares about course when he doesn't.
This guy's sucks, he was a high school teacher, and you can tell. He's rude, as he doesn't validate questions asked in class, or always belittles, or make smart comments to students who ask questions, or participate. Terrible person to email, and his grading scale sucks, like what do you mean you have to get a 83% to get a C like that is just.....
Terrible class, terrible teacher.
It makes it extremely hard to learn the material, and tests are harder than anything worked on in class.
You will learn absoultely NOTHING in lecture. If there is useful information getting taught, its for 5 minutes and you won't see it again.
Quizzes are wayyyyy harder than anything was done in class or hw. Not enough explanation and you dont learn much. He seems bored and make you feel stupid for asking questions.
The worst teacher I have ever had at OSU. Loves to gatekeep knowledge, including the knowledge of what your actual grade is. Mentions that he will change the syllabus in class at any point he wants. Lab is 25% of the grade but not related to class at all, the grading is entirely so stupid that you fail is you get 80% in a category worth 5% you fail
Doesn't explain material very well. Very difficult to get full points on any assignments. Doesn't like being emailed questions on class or homework material and does not respond often. Not enough resources to help get through the class. TA's are great at teaching material and providing examples however.
The worst class I have ever taken throughout my college career. The prof is lazy and refuses to teach anything actually useful to the class in lectures. His grading scale is so much worse than any high level engineering class that I have take, where a C is an 80% in the class and a D+ is 76. Why Grant? WHY?
The Canvas organization is very scattered. There was no midterm practice quizzes. On homework I would be repeatedly graded on things outside of the rubric in addition to not being provided the rubric or grading criteria before hand. Grant is very pessimistic and rude towards his students, you will never be given the benefit of the doubt.
Grant is one of the laziest humans I have ever met in the professional world. His class is structured horribly and students are set up for failure. Grading criteria are unclear and the grading scale is extreme. For context: I have put 85% of my time this term (taking 4 other courses, 2 hard ones) into PH213. Passing with A's in all but this one.
I genuinely wish I could give Grant a 0. He justifies the high grading scale by saying it is because every category (Labs, participation, studios, etc) will be rounded by dropping the lowest scores as he elaborates via syllabus. This also means we have no idea what our grades are the entire term and he is constantly behind. Would NOT take again.
Grant Sherer is worst prof that I have had in my entire career at Oregon State. He is one of the most incompetent people I have met, he doesn't teach anything that related to the tests. He is one the laziest people that I have met in my entire life. Going to his class makes me want to jump out in front of traffic.
Doesn't show you your grades and justifies it by you could calculate your grade yourself. While this is true canvas shows you and if you need to see what your score is rounded you can do that. Overall is a lazy professor who likes to look down on those in his class, one of the craziest power trips I've seen by a professor.
Large ego, taught very poorly
By far the worst instructor I have ever had, college or high school. I am currently in the class and he has now locked our grade so we can't see what grade we have. With the abhorrent grading policy, when I walk into this classroom with no windows it feels like im in a constant nightmare and I wake up in a cold sweat, always shaking and confused.
I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but over the term this class has become a huge stressor and downright overwhelming. With the way the material is presented, it makes it very hard to study for tests in the class, which is what most of our grade is weighted on. Also he locked out grades on canvas, which is insane.
"I don't think Grant is a bad person, but I do think he has become a victim of the physics department. I think the physics department as a whole is terrible and Grant is getting the backlash from that, and is not recognizing this, instead just remains a victim." - A very wise man
Horrible grading scale, 77% is a D+. Harsh grader. Questions that are meant to stump you not challenge you. The material being hard is one thing, but to be such an uncompassionate and unaccommodating instructor who does not care at all for his students' understanding of the material or their mental health. SAVE YOURSELF AND AVOID
Another review on here said I don't think Grant is a bad person. I completely disagree. Had some really tough classes with profs that pushed me to the edge but at least they tried to help you, but this is something else. He can't teach and he couldn't care less.
This has been the worst experience I have had with a teacher. He complains about having to reply to emails and doesn't care about his students nor is willing to work with them to find solutions to problems. The grading scale is insane, if you have any other options choose it over him.
He made a big test, homework, and big project all due in week 10… with a final the next Monday. He has no remorse for students and will not answer emails. He doesn't care about teaching you the material and expects you to just get it with little teaching. Avoid.
The grading scale is insane. The concepts are not that bad, but the way that they are taught and graded makes the class miserable.
-Assignment points are inconsistent and graded on a rubric that is made up after students submit their work - Manipulated the grading scale to target students that need a C+ in the course - Doesn't respond to emails - Unclear notes from lectures and tests designed to stump students Series needs to be taken over by the College of Engineering.
This professor and the PH 21X series as a whole will completely destroy any interest you have in physics. There are no rubrics, the professor does not care if you learn or succeed. He is completely self-absorbed and refuses to acknowledge any student feedback, only complaining about receiving too many emails from students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Absolutely will not respond to emails. Has the mentality that it is not his problem if you have any circumstances that prohibit you from coming to exams or missing deadlines. I had him for studio as well, he is passive aggressive, threatens no participation points. When asked a question he seems genuinely annoyed. Does not care about his students.
Never hated a class more. I currently have an 80% but that is a C- and I am 3% from a D. The grading scale is so bizarre, and we receive so much work (homework, labs, ect) that barley count for anything. We get no posted notes for studio and lecture, and Grant is bad about posting past homework and quiz solutions. He can also very rude and cranky.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. The grading scale is absolutely ridiculous, anything under an 80% is a C- / fail. I've seen him refuse to answer questions on multiple occasions. No grading rubric for homework so you constantly lose points for no reason. Constantly complains about how hard his job is and blames students for his problems.
Grant guilt trips students by claiming that he hasn't been posting practice problems or solutions to exams because we keep sending him emails--it's our fault that he's lazy. Grading scale targets Engineering students who need a C to pass by making the threshold an 80%. Notes are incomprehensible, good luck trying to review material before an exam!
He never responds to emails despite saying that this was the only class he's teaching this term. Constantly sassy in class and passive aggressive when students ask clarifying questions. 80% to get a C and said an 84% for a B- is "very generous for this course." Only exams are worth enough to save your grade.
The whole PH21X series is a mess but Grant does not do anything to make it better. The grading scale he chose is horrible with an 80% being a C, which is what most students need to pass. Lots of assignments that barely count and no clear rubric before turning in. Quizzes are purposefully made to be nothing seen before and are worth 30%.
Terrible class spent 80% of my term working on this class for no reason not worth it, don't take this class
I usually think rate my professor reviews are way too harsh but these ones are accurate
I had Grant for 211 and it was not as bad as this term. Idk what happened but what everyone has commented on here is pretty much true. Quizzes did not reflect hw or lecture material. Homework, post lectures, and group project due week 10. Grades locked. Stressed through this whole class.
Never wore my seatbelt when driving to lecture because I hoped that I would crash and die before arriving.
He would mock students in class when they asked clarifying questions. He would spend several minutes during lecture whining that "he has so many emails to read" like it was our fault that he had to... do his job? Never responded to a single email. Never taught what he put on the exams. Graded assignments that matched answer keys wrong. Horrendous.
Prepare for the most unprofessional professor. This guy complains about getting too many emails from students. He also blocked the ability to see our grades because “you should be able to calculate your own grade at this point in the term.”
All he does is complain about his emails and blame the class when he cant explain well enough that the same question is asked 3x. He gave up on posting learning material for like three weeks. Those saying he is a victim of the physics department is not true, Danielle Skinner my GOAT has a great rating despite being from the same department.
Grant has been unhelpful when it comes to communicating with him outside of class. I would send him emails just for him to not reply to them. Not only that, but as an instructor he's supposed to provide lecture notes or answer keys to PL/WHW. Halfway through the term he gave up and refused to post answer keys.
He doesn't care and knows he'll get away with his bs unless someone stands up to him. This is a long shot, but could you send screenshots of your emails (with your info blacked out) so I can build a case and hold him accountable? My ignored emails will be there too. Everyday I went to class, I wished for a tragic accident to occur in order to avoid going to class. Bus? Hit me please. I wish this upon no others that take this course in the future.
Locked the grades before the final, said we could calculate our grade on our own, but even if you do, assignments aren't graded because they are behind so you have no clue what your grade is. Got help from TA's for homework and would get the correct answer but would still be graded 75% (which is a fail because below 80% is a fail).
If you have to take this course, AVIOD Grant at ALL costs. Take this class at LBCC if you have to. The material overall is not too bad, but the difficulty comes entirely from roadblocks put in place by Grant. If this was structured like 211 or 212 it would not be nearly as bad. Worst class I have taken at OSU.
This is the WORST class offered at OSU. I understand that the physics program is overall pretty terrible, but Grant does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to make it any easier on his students. The grading scale might be the most horrendous thing I have ever seen. I would rather jump into a trash compactor than take this class or any class taught by Grant.
Seriously considered leaving OSU after having to endure this class. The only thing that will be left after the nuclear holocaust will be cockroaches and his exams.
Grant is terrible, if you don't show up to 80% of classes he fails you because he knows his lectures are so terrible nobody would show if he did not make class mandatory. Spends 10 minutes every lecture going over dumb emails he receives/announcements he has posted. Homework/tests do not correlate to what he teaches in class.
I want to like grant, and his understanding of physics is solid. His academic discipline is terrible though. He is dismissive, petty, and arrogant, yet pretends he loves feedback. He locked the grades 2 weeks before finals, so no way of knowing if you'll pass. Get less than 80% attendance? You fail. And the grading scale! A C- is a 78-79??
Bad grading scale and unclear guidelines. Unnecessarily stressful and hard to get a hold of.
my grade was an 85, and by their grading scale an 85 is a B-. Grant however was the only teacher who taught 213 and he failed to prepare everyone for any assessment of material. He often changed the rubric and was unclear about material on exams and provided no resources on time to study for. like posting day before. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
Grant is condescending, mean, creates issues then blames students, makes tests that are purposely like no homework you've seen, won't post study tools or resources, etc. I took 211/212 with Danielle Skinner and while I hated the content, she made the class fun. In 213, when I actually started to like the content, Grant made it awful.
Needing almost 80% in the class to pass is ridiculous when the problems on the exams aren't close to anything we've covered. He is rude, doesn't respond to emails, and doesn't explain anything well. I have no doubt he knows what he's talking about, but he is incapable of teaching what he knows to others. The average on the final was 57%.
Genuinely the worst experience of my life. Going to the homework help hours was not helpful, you can still be marked down for what TA's tell you is right. Lectures were terrible. His syllabus states "we will not introduce much content in class" but attendance is mandatory. You fail if you don't show up to 80% of the lectures and a C starts at 83%
After 4 years of school, Grant was by far the worst professor I've had. He "experimented" with our grades, causing a huge portion of the class not to pass as his standards changed. Any time a student questioned his decisions, he was rude and dismissive in his responses. If you want a teacher who cares about you as a student, DO NOT take with Grant.
OSU's physics series needs a re-do. Homework grading is flawed, and too much time is spent deriving equations instead of applying concepts. Labs are decent, and the new policy bumping lab scores to 100% if you earn 75% overall is helpful. However, tests and studios rarely provide clear answers, making it harder to learn and improve.
I don't think I've ever experienced a more difficult professor or a class that grades homework so harshly. Lectures, studios, and labs felt difficult to connect concepts between them. Lots of work and time at home. Hid grades from us so I wasn't sure what my letter grade was near the end. Won't respond to your emails. Difficult to learn from. Sad..
He's a tough grader with unclear expectations on homeworks, he's difficult to work with in emails, and he's generally uninterested in teaching the course. The tests and homework were disconnected from the content in lecture and the final grade was slightly adjusted as most people would've failed otherwise. The average on the final was 58%...
worst class of my life
He should be proud that he is the worst "teacher" I have ever had.
They should quit teaching and start selling pickles since it might be the only thing that they could be good at it.
His lecture so super no good. If you miss a lecture you could miss quite a few information. Work are not Organized at all. Test are ridiculous hard. Tough Grader. Not recommended
Put simply the worst teacher I've had in my 19 years of life. Homework grading is way too harsh and exams are ridiculously hard for no reason. Lecture attendance is more or less mandatory. Labs were pretty cool but only because Grant wasn't involved in any aspect. Class averaged an F on the final.
This was easily the worst professor I've had. He was unresponsive to emails and disabled grade visibility on Canvas just to avoid student inquiries. Homework grading was excessively harsh, and exams were unnecessarily difficult. In the end, he had to adjust the grading scale because the class average on the final was an F. DO NOT TAKE WITH GRANT
So bad at his job. Curriculum is laughably bad at giving you an understanding of what is expected on homework and tests and lectures are terrible and ridiculously unhelpful. Grading is insanely harsh. Lab does nothing to increase your understanding of material and will be the worst 2hrs of your week. This class blows.
Hated physics because of him.
This was the worst managed class I have ever taken at OSU. I spent hours upon hours completing homework and getting extra help with TA's for absolutely no reason. The exams are heavily weighted and Grant did not provide any adequate practice problems or prep before the exams at all. Expect to put in effort for no return.
This guy sounds like a middle school teacher and just overall isn't helpful. Also, he has his dogs out 24/7
The best way I can summarize all of the things that are horrible about this class is that enough students across all the PH211 sections with him and Paul were failing and talked to their advisors about withdrawing that the advisors had to tell them to get it together. He was also fine with a 68% class average on the midterm.
Spawn of the devil
wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. do.not.take.this.class.
Very strict grader on homework; makes you solve everything the exact way they want you to or you will be marked down. Also lectures could be taught much clearer and studios are a waste of time but attendence is mandatory.
He treats students horribly. There was a week where we had a midterm, a makeup quiz, a homework assignment, a lab project and an optional extra credit assignment. Grant simply said it is expected for a 4 credit hour class. He isn't even a bad teacher but he expects you to only learn physics to become a physicist as opposed to just getting by
