Math enthusiast, pace too fast. Not good for slow learners.
To get a high grade, you must thoroughly understand the homework -- tests include problems that are unfamiliar at first sight, but have a basis in the -concepts- you should have learned. That is why his tests are pretty hard. Forces you to learn, though.
Mr. Allen sucks, he talks to fast, doesnt expalin well and offers to help but then is unhelpful. He is also a tough grader, I was one point away from a B in his class and he gave me the "C" anyway. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM
No Comments
He is one of the best, funniest teachers i have had at that school.
Don't skip class. #1 he starts getting pissed after a couple of missed classes. #2 he's actually really good at explaining and teaching problems & spends time ea. new day to go over any homework problems you had trouble on, same thing with tests.
Grades fair and is very good at explaining.
Mr. Allen is a great teacher. He knows his stuff and is good at explaining it. He is always willing to help. He goes over whatever questions there may be. If you take finite take it with Allen, hes the king of it!
I took Allen for STATS AND finite. I hate math and he explained it GREAT. I kinda like math now. Thanks! Hard subjects GREAT teacher.
this teacher kicks ass he is the best for math. good teacher and great guy
great teacher, super funny, super helpful, best teacher ive had a WVC so far!
He is the greatest Math Teacher in WVC. Because of this teacher, I was able to learn Calculus thoroughly. However, he is not easy teacher. In order to get an A, you must complete homework and be ready for the Test. If you like math, I recommand him!!
Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always hated math but its not that hard as i expected in his class. If you keep track of homeworks n other assignments, you should be fine
cool teacher. helpful and understanding. makes math easier even though calculus is hard. just do your homework, ask questions, and dont miss class
took him 4 summer school.he sucked. he went realy fast, skipped steps and he wasnt clear. he assumes u know the probs and says everythin is easy, and always calls on students randomly 4 answears.
Good teacher, very helpful. Class is pretty easy as long as you keep up with the homework.
Great teacher!
He makes calculus non-intimidating!
There are better teachers.
I found him nice but I didn't like his jokes. They were sarcastic and actually made me feel dumb and like I wasn't good enough to be in his class. So i dropped it about a month into the semester.
not a bad one his ok
took him a few years ago. was the best math class i ever had. he is very helpful in office hours and class time is not bad. he teaches well and is fair in grading. id take him over any other math teacher.
Teaches okay, quiz almost every week. Sometimes it is hard to understand what he is teaching in class, go through a chapter really fast.
Wonderful! Office hours are God send, use it kids! He moves fast but do your homework, ask questions in class, and you will be fine. I really enjoyed his class. I truly recommend him.
Mr. Allen's class was pretty easy and I don't know why so many people dropped the class. Quizzes are just about weekly. He'll go over the homework, but collects only two-thirds of it. Nice guy, goes through lectures very fast, so keep up! I recommend him for Finite if he's still teaching it.
he's not easy... but he's probably one of the most helpful teachers that you'll find... he's not a good teacher if you're looking for an easy A, but he's a great teacher if you want to learn
Great teacher, one of the best math teachers i have ever had
Dude I love Mr. Allen!!!!! Him and me totally get along and we always talk about Survivor. LOL He is by far one of the coolest teachers I have ever had and I still stop by and say hi to him even though I took his class a year ago.
Mr. Allen is the best teacher. He really knows how to help you out. If your struggling he will take the time to explain things, and he knows that we all wont get it on the first try. His tests are challenging but he helps you prepare well ahead of time.
This guy worked with the class... none of us really got it and he changed his whole schedule and grading to help all of us pass....
extremely fair and flexible.
Excellent teacher. Easy to understand, works well so you get the concepts.
He is one of the best math teachers that I have ever had. If you are looking for an easy A don't take him, but he is really helpful and his office hours are also helpful. His grading is kind of tough and there is a quiz almost every week, but overall is better than any other math teacher I've had.
Yay!!Funny & flexible guy!
Great teaching, good examination, trusting, patient and nice. Maybe the best teacher I had. Always available to help.
very very helpful! clear lectures and easy grading. wonderful teacher. take any math with this guy!
Extremely helpful. Makes it a priority to be as understandable to all as possible and keep everyone in a good space. However, not an easy class - expect tests weekly or daily depending on the semester. He also is very firm when it comes to your graade - no budging. Don't take if you're looking for an easy one - only recommended to the math wiz!
He is extremely helpful and clear when he is teaching. He is a great math teacher who knows what he is talking about and does everything that he can to help you in the class. But it was a hard class cuz its 3b what do you expect. But he did a great job of making it a little easier.
He's a great teacher. Weekly exams (test or quiz) and homework is collected almost everyday though. Other than the heavy workload, he is down to earth, clear in lecture, and available during office hours. He puts you in groups during class to mix things up and has you "get to know everyone." However, I highly recommend his classes.
Not that great of a teacher. Went through the material very fast, and you never knew what was going to be on the quiz. I was dropped because I wasnt sucking up to him like other kids in the class. Tests are very hard.
Greg is an awesome guy. He's really helpful and genuinely wants people to do well in his class. His corniness at times makes him all the more endearing. he's down to earth and easily approachable. Attendance is crucial and unless you're some doogie howser mofo you gotta stay on top of homework! overall a pleasure, although i didn't pass.
Very good at what he does. Is extremley avalible and flexible. Good teacher!
Amazing and nice teacher. Always there to help during office hours; however, not an easy teacher. A quiz every week (1 page front and back, time limit= 20 min). 3 exams (4 pages) and 1 final. His exams are hard because he includes tricky questions. Many applications! Average of 30+ problems for each homework section. Very tedious class. HARD!
Very cool teacher. Helpful, has grace, made me laugh alot. His wife even bakes for the class! Recommend him, wish he taught more of my classes.
If you want to learn, N pass the class then take it with Alen, he's wonderful, helpful, nice, N amzing teacher. I loved his class and I never wanted to go home, so I'm taking math 1 with him next semester. There will be a quiz once a week and 3 midterms. If you don't miss a class you really dont't need to study.I got a B N I never studied for the tes
Even though his class started at 6:30pm and ended @ 9:00pm I looked forward to his classes. He tries to make math fun because he understands that its a difficult subject for most ppl. Be aware that he does in fact assign a good amount of HW...something to think about....
Great Teacher! So helpful and fun! Made everything really easy and understandable!
Very nice. Be prepared to do lots of homewrok as is with any math class. Quizzes about once a week. Was a little fast in teaching for me anyway as math is not my strength. If yours is, then I recommend taking him. Likes to tell jokes (like most math teachers) to keep things live. Also, he often brings in snacks. His wife makes killer cookies.
This class will be HARD if you're bad at math, like me. However, Mr. Allen is such a rockin teacher. He loves math and is always in a good mood. He is extremely helpful and funny and a bit dorky. Make sure to go to his office hours, I bothered him almost everyday, yet he never hesitated to help me. He's a really great & lively person. YTB Allen! NL
Allen makes some very funny and corny jokes to liven up the class. Make sure you ask lots of questions. He has a lot of energy--I always thought it was because of redbull but I found out that he's just naturally a crazy yet fun teacher. Make sure you TRY in class. His exams are deadly--there are always tricky ?'s and a few applications.
Overall he is such a nice teacher, but please don't take his class if you are not good at math. Exams are hard, you should study a lot for his class but there is still no warrenty that you can get A in this class. Also, he is so fast. You should be able to follow him during his lectures. Hard Grade!
greatest teacher i have ever had! Everybody should take his class:))
Instructor is awesome, he keeps class as fun as poss., great energy, very likable. He does talk fast and teach fast so if you're not too quick then maybe you should consider another instructor. But if you're willing to put in the time & effort, he's always avail. to help. Lots of HW,weekly quizzes & tough exams so be prepared! Attendance mandatory
A good teacher. Math is not my strong subject at all and I still managed to pull an A- in Algebra 106 over the summer. He teaches well and offers good office hours.
Mr. Allen is very friendly and helpful. He does talk a bit fast, but enjoys teaching and it shows.
Even though I didn't take advantage of his helpfulness, he still was very friendly and respectful to me. Great rounded teacher.
He is an awesome teacher. Very rarely you'll see a teacher this enthusiastic and passionate about teaching. That makes the process of learning easier and less boring for you as a student. Very Nice. Extreamly friendly and respectful. Attendence is not mandotory but he will make you feel bad about being absent.
I actually liked math when I had Allen. He makes everything easier. All you have to do to get a good grade in his class is pay attention, and do your homework. He gives you 3 points per homework you do, but he doesn't check them, plus he takes questions at the beginning of every class.
He was an excellent teacher - really engaged the students and learning - even made it fun, which is hard to do with numbers. He is very knowlegdgable has high expectations but the results are worth it. I took Algebra 1 during summer school which was very accelerated. Hoping to take other math courses with him.
Great teacher, extremely helpful.. Honestly prob one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's always there to help, goes over anything you need help with. Def take Mr. Allen. Anyone who says hes a bad teacher is either lying or is to much of a slacker to put forth any effort.
Great teacher, and he was extremely help I dont know what theses other people are talking about. He was always willing to help before class during his office hours. And he was a super nice guy. Its a shame when a great teacher gets put down by lazy students. His classes arent even that hard and he lets you use open notes....
Mr. Allen is one of the most interesting math teachers I have taken. He made learning the material fun. I would highly recommend taking him especially if you get distracted easily in class because he throws in jokes and comments that will help encourage you to listen.
I wasn't tpp sure on taking stats because i heard it was easy but other people told me it was hard. It was difficult for me but Allen really helps you when you don't understand. I would recommend him to someone and if i had to take stats again, I would pick him.
Great Teacher
He is kinda nice teacher, u have to keep up with the class and have to take aquize every week and sometimes twice a week. u will be bombored with HWs. half of the class droped it during the semester
He is an gifted teacher because he is able to explain a concept from different perspectives. He knows his calculus and 80's music and math jokes. His tests were very easy compared to the homework problems (which often took a couple hours per day (during the 6 week summer session), but eliminated any need to study for weekly exams or daily quizzes).
Mr.Allen is an all around great teacher.Extremely helpful and lenient. He gives make up points if everyone does poorly on an exam.Be prepared to do a lot of HW though.Mr. Allen has a great sense of humor and keeps the mood light. Highly reccomend!
great sense of humor. stay on top of the homework and you'll be fine.
Mr. Allen is awesome! Let's face it, Math 3B is a hard class, but he does his best to explain it. I'm the kind of person that needs a while to understand material, but he is easy to understand and explains well. He does assign a lot of HW, but it's enough that you don't need to study for the tests. The quizzes are sometimes open book.
very nice teacher. explains well, and is always willing to help
Mr. Allen is one of the best math teachers I have taken at this community college. He is willing to help any student and is very accessible. His grading style is very reasonable. The Math 3B class is one of the most difficult mathematic class I have ben through. Mr. Allen makes the class more intresting and easy to understand. Highly Recommended.
Best math teacher ever! Extremely clear, and makes math super easy. I wish he was teaching the math I need to take next!
greg is a great teacher..loved his awkward jokes hahaha the material is hard..I got a D but that's math :/
I think he's an awesome teacher when it comes to math. He'll answer any questions you have on the homework and most of thw time tell you what to study for the exams. He gives out study guides before exams and sometimes exams are take home. He's a nice guy too just do all you homework and 2-3 hours study for exams you'll be fine.
i took his math 3B class, and i got more than 100% in his class, just listen what he says, do hw, he will tell you what would be on the exam, he's awesome and very helpful , TAKE HIMMMMMMM :
Great teacher. I was disappointed I couldn't take successive classes.
Do not take mr.Allen unless you are a math genius. He's a nice guy but his test are pretty hard. Do not take unless your a math related major.
Allens a cool guy and tells pretty funny jokes. He's very helpful, approachable, and teaches the subject well. I definetly recommend him as a teacher. Got an A in his class
Mr. Allen is an awesome teacher. his lecture is very clear and easy too understand. Come to his class, listen to his lecture, do hw, you will be fine. his test generally is not too hard. he also gives lots of extra credit. TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Horrible teacher, announces he knows he talks too fast and doesn't choose to fix his problem. Doesnt pay attention to students just wants to scribble on board and do everything super fast and dismiss if anyone at all is following- no one did in my calc class. I do not recommend him.
Great teacher, took a summer class so a lot of material in a short time. Still stops me in the hallway to make sure I am doing ok in Calculus. Highly recommend taking him.
Professor Allen is a great guy. He made calculus interesting. Reading the book is mandatory. He goes over the homework and exams in class. He even tells you what to expect on the exams. He keeps the class exciting. He also has a great taste in Will Ferrell movies! If you're going to take calculus, definitely and take it with him! Greg Allen rules!
Mr. Allen is a great Professor who definitely makes the class very interesting. He is passionate in what he is teaching, and also has a very good sense of humor. If you're going to take Calculus, take it with Mr. Allen! :)
Excellent teacher! He is a very helpful person that truely cares about how his students are doing. He also has a very nice personality and makes the whole classroom laugh once on a while.
Professor is very unclear. Scribbles problems on white board without much explanation. Test problems are VERY different from examples and study guide. Cool guy, but horrible professor. Not recommended.
Mr Allen is a decent guy and very approachable, though he gives out lots of exams and quizzes. His exams can also have obscure problems and problems that were barely encountered in the book. He will however occasionally allow for you to redo certain questions on a exam, but that wouldn't be necessary if he actually gave problems we covered.
Teacher does not explain problems well. Tests and quizzes are very difficult.
Unless you are very good at calculus I would not take this professor.
A nice guy, but not very clear and not the best at actually teaching math. He also *loves* giving out tests and quizzes and his exams can be rather hard. His exams can also have questions you barely encountered in homework, rather lovely on his part. And his hard exams wouldn't be so bad if he actually taught well, but he's mediocre at best.
A rather hard professor, but a cool guy. I would not take him unless you absolutely love math, since he administers a lot of tests and the problems can be different than what was covered. Also not the best at teaching math either, I learned better reading from the book. And he likes group work, which is great in a math class, not.
Confusing professor.. Doesnt explain material well and exams are very difficult. Dont take him. Thank me later.
Talks too fast and doesn't explain things well. Lots of quizzes and exams and they are difficult. Don't take him unless you are very confident in your math skills.
Good professor
Mr. Allen is a pretty cool guy, but he rushes through class and goes over problems too fast. I mean, I'm taking Applied Calculus NOT Calculus 3A for a reason. This class was not what i was expecting. It kind of sucks that Mr. Allen wasn't even supposed to teach this class until last minute changes. Overall, nice guy, bad teacher :/
Tests are way too difficult .. Professor Allen is not a good professor.
Professor Allen is a cool guy. He has an outgoing personality and is easy to talk to. His way of teaching, however, is not so good. He scrambles through lessons and talks way to fast. He doesn't explain new material well. The tests and quizzes he gives are very difficult and nothing like his examples. Not recommended for the average math student.
Mr Allen seems like a decent guy, but his teaching methods are confusing and hard to understand. His exams and quizzes are also pretty tough, including problems that are rarely covered in class or homework. He also likes to go off tangent a bit much and seems so amused with his bad jokes, which are not always appreciated.
Do your homework! Best math teacher I have ever had. If he starts going too fast you can tell him and he'll take a break. One time, everyone did poorly on a quiz so he reviewed it more and gave everyone a retake. His goal is clearly to have everyone learn the subject, not to just burn through it as quickly as possible like other teachers I've had.
Not really a good teacher, I learned far more by myself then I ever did through his lectures. He also loves lots of exams and quizzes, which have math problems that we barely cover in class or homework. Only take him if you're a masochist.
Mr. Allen is a pretty cool guy. He cracks plenty of jokes and his attitude is always positive. But calculus is hard. Don't fall behind on the homework (from textbook). It's good practice and great review. Exams and quizzes are straightforward. Overall pretty chill instructor. Would take again.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. He managed to keep a 3 1/2 hour class upbeat and exciting every day for 6 weeks. The material, through loads of examples and thorough explanation, becomes easy.TAKE THIS PROFFESSOR'S CLASS! You will not regret it. Yaeeiieee, thumbs up, I love u (substitution).
Mr.Allen is an awesome teacher. He really seems to enjoy what he is doing and makes class fun(well as fun as you can make math I guess.) He gives a lot of examples, takes time answering questions, and his exams are very similar to the group work and the in class examples. I hope to take another class from him in the future.
I was dreading taking calculus over Summer, but Professor Allen made the experience extremely enjoyable. Tests aren't difficult if you do your homework and ask questions in class. He moves quickly through lectures, but answers questions thoroughly. 10/10 Would take again. Needs to practice shooting hoops.
He is a great teacher. He really tries to keep the class interested, does fun trivia questions in order to get prices, is always on time, he is also willing to spend outside of class time to make sure students understand the topic.
Calculus is naturally a hard and confusing course. He was able to go into detail about why a concept is the way it is if a student needed better understanding. He is funny, too. I have only taken one calculus teacher, but I would no doubt take him again for Math 3B if I were to continue.
Has an amusing personality, but does not have a good grasp of Calculus beyond derivatives and his teaching quality goes down as you get further into Calculus. Also tends to treat everyone like they are in High School, with the vast amount of homework and countless tests and quizzes, which often contain problems that were barely covered.
Wow! I really like prof allen. His lectures were fun, so class went buy quickly. Tests are tough sometimes, so you have to work for it. He's always willing to help so come by office hours. Overall, great class. Would totally recommend.
Pretty good teacher, but I feel like there are better teachers at WV. If his class's time works better for you than other teachers, take him. He's really nice and always tries to help, but he can be a little unclear. Exams weren't too hard but definitely weren't easy
Mr. Allen is awesome. He presents concepts really thoroughly and is available if you need more explanations. He assigns homework nearly everyday. Each assignment takes between 1 and 3 hours. However, he allows at least 2 days and is open to giving extensions. He reviews homework, quiz, and test problems in class. Would definitely take him again.
Really great teacher! Took for math 3A and 3B. He lectures CLEARLY and makes the 2.5 hours pass super quick! Does lots of practice! Exams are fine as long as you study and do homework there shouldnt be any huge surprises! DEFINITELY one of my favorite professors at WV :) TAKE HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT
Goes over problems in class, helps you a lot if you need it. Good explanations. Funny guy.
Good guy. Really nice, but the class is hard. Prepare to work for your grade.
Greg is a great teacher who truly loves math. His tests are hard because he really wants you to be prepared for the next class. If you work hard you will get at least a B. Office hours and asking questions are the best ways to build a great relationship with him. If you want to learn, take this class. If you want an easy A... look elsewhere
My favorite teacher ever of alllllll time!! Honestly, I defffff recommend taking him. He's super cool, fun to just talk to hahaha, and he overall just a genuine person. He brought the class ice cream one day!! Hahahah he's the best :)
He is the hardest math instructor I ever had!!!!
Extremely hard teacher with ridiculous tests. His teaching style is alright and he's a really nice guy but his expectations are too high. About half the class is literally failing right now (under 70%) Homework takes up to 4 hours a night (and theres homework every night). I would recommend any other teacher. Not an easy teacher at all.
doesn't use web assign - one of the main reasons i'm taking him. Makes the class atmosphere a little brighter with his humor. Math can be very confusing but he asks if everyone understands and if he knows it was confusing, he explains it again. Gives a lot of chances to get extra points. Ready to help
Mr. Allen is one of my favorite teachers! you really need to go to class to grasp the concepts, but that's like any math class. He has lots of homework, but the homework isn't excessive and prepares you better for tests. Tests are just like the examples in class. ... Mr. Allen's math jokes are endless...
Wayyy too much homework, spent about 3 hours on one assignment and he assigns like 75 problems a night. I dropped the class right away because I was stressing so much while doing the homework because I didn't understand it even after he explained. He also goes through topics too fast. Keep in mind I also love math.
Made the material easy to understand. Understanding if you go and talk to him, if you need help just ask him. Pretty funny too.
I really enjoyed this math class, such a fun professor! It was really hard and time consuming at first, but it got easier. Homework is really important bc it really helps you prepare for the exams and make sure to ask questions and to ask for help when needed! Exams are very straightforward and no surprises. Fast class, make sure you keep up!
He is simply amazing! So caring and laid back, he gives so many chances to improve your grades. His exams are just like the examples he gives in class. Do your homework so you can get an easy A even if the hw is long practice makes perfect! I looked forward to his class and I wish he teaches math 3B. He is also hilarious! His lectures fly by!
In a nutshell: great guy, tough tester
Allen is hilarious. Super helpful during office hours and can talk about anything. His tests are long, but if you do the homework you will alright.
Great teacher, funny and accessible. Wants you to do well in Calc. Be prepared to put in the work, but also don't think you're alone. He is totally willing to help outside of or in class and is dedicated to making sure you understand. If you're willing to ask, he's happy to answer.
I loved this class! He cracks jokes every now and then, which lightens the mood because math in't very enjoyable. I love how this class has handwritten homework, I prefer this over Webassign. His quizzes and exams weren't too bad. I wish he taught CALC3B!
Usually I hate math but this teacher made it almost enjoyable. He uses an old edition of the textbook for math106 so students don't have to pay hundreds of dollars (YAY). There's a new lesson everyday and hw every night (kind of a lot of problems). He doesn't grade too hard on tests and he is lenient on turning hw in late. And he's funny!
I took intermediate algebra for the summer and I have always been horrible at algebra 2. He's the first professor to actually explain things in a way I completely understand. He also really does care about you passing and will help you in any way he can. He's really funny and will lighten the stress a bit. Definitely take him if you can.
Trigonometry was a beast. I am so glad I took it from Greg because he was approachable and caring. Halfway through the semester I told him I was dropping the class, and he worked with me to end up with a B. Gives makeup tests and extra homework to ensure we actually learned. One of the best professors I've had at West Valley!
He's super nice and will go over anything you need help with. I would say though he goes through topics really fast and doesn't really give you time to solve a problem yourself. He also gives a lot of homework it gets annoying to do. Personally I'm not a fan of the teaching style but he is a great teacher for others!
Great guy. Very approachable and loves it when students ask questions. He will force you to be better at math. His tests and quizzes are adequately challenging, although never unwarranted in difficulty. Tows that line between "challenging" and "needlessly hard" perfectly.
If you need structure, then don't take him. No calendar, so quiz days and exam days are announced in class. Quizzes are announced the week of (2-3 days before). Exams are announced a week before. Sometimes does not write all steps on the board (simplifies algebra in head. Skips writing cos(1) & puts 0 ), so you might be confused on how he got a #.
Dropped in the first couple of weeks. Teaching style was incredibly fast paced and there was just no structure. Quizzes announced 2-3 days before and quizzes were incredibly hard. Said to watch videos and started with examples for lessons without even introducing the topic well. Be ready to get overburdened with homework and quizzes if you take him
If you learn math through a systematic approach (i.e. Step 1, Step 2), don't take him. He will explain a problem, and then in the middle of explaining the problem he will go off a tangent and offer a "shortcut" to that one specific problem. The "shortcuts" don't help people learning the concept the first time and will confuse you instead.
He tells you about a quiz 3 days before it happens and tests a week before. It is an extremely hard class and having that approach to due dates is awful. The textbook doesn't really help and although I have used outside resources, I still was not able to do so well. I had to drop. Math comes pretty easily to me so it was shocking. Take someone else
Greg is the best teacher I have had at WV, he really cares, wants you to pass & is gracious! Just show up every day, do the HW & it's an easy A. He always starts the class going over any Q's you had for the HW due that day. He uses the book instead of the online system and it's less than 2 pgs/30 mins of work (which isn't bad, just keep it up).
Personally I appreciate his teaching style. I love the big picture of m. problems & shortcuts. I don't understand some of the feedback on here b/c he systematically & clearly explains probs. Math takes work, but if you chip at it aka do the hw you're fine! There's a lot of content to cover, if you're lost utilize the free math tutors/his office hrs
For the sake of your mental health and GPA, do not take him for any class higher than Algebra.
Allen does a lot of practice problems in class, tends to skip over conceptual stuff. If you're someone who doesn't like concepts and would rather just skip straight to "doing" math, then he might be your man. I found I had to teach myself every single lesson at home and know at least 4 others students in the same situation. Policy is fair though
Anyone who can earn an A in this guy's class should automatically be awarded the fields medal. Was hard to see all the Math majors drop. Good luck with the handcrafted problems on his tests and quizzes if you take him.
100% the best Math teacher I've taken. His lectures are great, and he really cares about his students. Mr. Allen really goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material, taking you through step by step if needed. He's a conceptual teacher, meaning there's less memorization needed, and grades on that basis. Meaning show your work! 10/10
The BEST math teacher I have ever had and only teacher that helped me to really understand math concepts. If math is a struggle for you(always has been my weakest subject)take it with Greg. As long as you do the hw and put the work into the class, he will do everything he can to help you succeed.
I don't understand all of these bad 3B reviews. 3B is a hard class. No teacher will make it a breeze. Greg takes you through the process more than theory and concepts, which some may like and some may dislike, but he shows you what you need to know as well as helpful shortcuts that you wouldn't necessarily get at a university. Highly recommended.
Professor Allen is the best math teacher I have ever taken. His lectures are easy to understand and he is willing to help you whenever you need assistance. HE CARES ABOUT YOU PASSING. He gives weekly quizzes, but if you attended class and did the hw you should be fine. He didn't require you to purchase the book, as all HW was done online.
I enjoyed having Professor Allen as my teacher for Calc 3B. I previously disliked Calc from my previous classes, but he made me enjoy it again. The class is really straightforward, just homework almost overnight, the occasional quiz and of course tests. He makes cringe jokes at times, but he kept me involved in the class.
You definitely work for the grade in this class but overall I think it is pretty average to other classes. He is an amazing teacher, super funny supportive and kind-hearted. He will work with you and listens to constructive criticism. He wants to see you succeed and will stop to help you. The class can go a little fast but not too bad.
Greg Allen is one of the worse teachers I ever had. He gave really hard quizzes and tests. When you come to his office hours and asked how can you improve your grades, he would tell you to do extra homework problems. It didn't help. Don't take him if you are not a math wiz or did well in your precalc class.
He spends the first part of class reviewing and homework problems people struggled with. If you don't understand, he's eager to explain in a different way, to make sure you understand the concepts. He does go very fast in lectures, but going to his office hours are extremely useful. Extremely nice guy, so if you can handle going fast, he's the guy.
Goes over material super fast about 1 chapter a day and thinks you have prior knowledge. One quiz every week and a test every 2-3 weeks. The problems on the test are tricker than what is actually taught in class. You need to come in with a strong understanding of math or have taken a calculus class before like most of the students in my class
Don't know what the negative reviews are talking about, Greg is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's really good at explaining things in a simple way that makes sense to students. And to anyone with half a brain, tests are nothing surprising and pretty similar to practice tests/problems. He made 3B enjoyable for me!
Greg is an awesome teacher. Don't listen to these other reviews. In online school, the entire year and every exam and quiz date is already planned out. GO TO LECTURES, and ask questions when you need help. He does a great job preparing students for exams, and turns Calc II into a breeze. I definitely will be taking his class again.
Calc 2 is a difficult class no matter which teacher you select. However, you are really given two options when Greg's class is listed during registration. A: Quadratic formula tattoo, dad jokes, math jokes (math-dad jokes?), superb grading system/class layout, tons of review resources, excellent film taste, fun lectures... or B: anyone else.
Allen is your best choice for 3B at West Valley. Calc II is difficult, but he tries his best to make things simple and easily understandable. You are graded on 4 quizzes, 4 exams, homework on MML, and a final. There are plenty of office hours to attend and he always responds back to emails. I wish I took him for Calc I to be honest.
Agree with the reviewers below! This class is HARD but I LOVE ALLEN SO MUCH. If you gotta take 3B take him. This was my second B+ in my entire academic life, but I thoroughly enjoyed his humor and compassion. Office hours 6x week, 4 exams & 4 quizzes (emails u pdf, take test on zoom w/ camera, then u submit to canvas).Get an A by putting ineffort!
Good luck with this teacher!! Greg Allen is the worse teacher I ever had. Don't take him unless you are extremely strong in Math. He Skips a lot of conceptual steps. No schedule, he tells you about the Quiz 3 days before and the Exam a week before. The problems you get in his exams are not related to the problems he fix in his lectures. Be prepared
Greg is a problem solving MACHINE. You go to class, and he basically solves 10-15 problems per lecture. Tests are pretty average for a Calc class. The material in Calc II is pretty heavy in terms of integration computation. Greg doesn't provide much theory or insight on the concepts, but he provides structured problem solving for alot of problems.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. He is horribly unorganized: he doesn't give clear due dates for the homework or tests. He skips over important material/fundementals. If you do poorly on tests, instead of going over the material he'll just assign you more work that you still don't understand. Only take him if you already know the material.
This class is extremely difficult. Professor Allen tries to give many practice problems as well as go over concepts of calc. His tests ARE VERY HARD. We had half of the class drop because they couldn't handle it. You gotta study on your own. He turns to professor Leonard videos often.
Mr. Allen is a very nice and respectful person, but his teaching style is very hard. His lectures are heavy and he explains the math from his perspective. He expects you to know and remember every algebra concept that comes along the way of solving a calc problem, therefore, he does everything in his head and not explain or show it. IT IS HARD!
I attended Allen's office hours almost every day. He was always willing to answer questions in office hours and in class. Very approachable. His test questions are much harder than any example or hw problem. He does this on purpose. He chuckled explaining test questions almost everyone missed because he knew they were xtra hard. do not recommend.
His course is fast paced and very hard! You need strong math skills! Exactly like the other reviews say. Do not take this class I am sure there are better professors ! He does not have clear deadlines and exam questions are much harder than actual examples and he clearly says in class this question was harder. Took another teacher and got 100%
I love his class has a really good sense of humor, holds office hours for his students, patient teacher and his classes are really fun. I really enjoyed them!
Could not have asked for a better calc professor. Math has been my weak point for as long as I can remember, but Professor Allen will do everything in his power to make sure you pass as long as you have the will to do so. All study guides with the exception of the final reflected the exams very well. You'll get all the materials you need to succeed
