He is not helpful. In his lecture he skips important steps because his chalkboard wasnt big enough. When you ask him for help he responds, "Just keep looking at it.". If you want to fall asleep in class register for him!!!
For me, he was an enjoyable professor that was able to keep you entertained throughout the semester. Helpful office hours (if you ever go). Cares about the students, not a very difficult class. I'd take him again if given the option.
Not a challenging class at all, barely attended lecture and pulled off an A, so I didn't see him much. His tests were easy versions of the Review sheets he has his TA's hand out in Discussion.
He is not smart. He makes at least one mistake in each lecture and stands there for 2 minutes with no idea. He will give us the corrected proof the next lecture. When there is an incorrect problem, he still takes off points. He is evil.
The most eccentric professor I've ever had. I'd compare him to a bumblebee. His lectures were entertaining only because of his odd mannerisms and the weird things he'd say. The material isn't too tough; he just loads the exams up with a ton of questions. Work as fast as you can on the exams; you'll need every minute!
Great professor. Always kept the material interesting with fun examples. Quite eccentric, as others have mentioned. Assigns tons of homework, but if you do it all, the exams are a breeze since the questions are the same.
Prepare to take a quick (really quick) tour through the subject if you are ever going to take his class. He's a pretty nice guy though.
I absolutely loved him. He was a bit weird at times, but a fabulous professor. He kept the subject interesting!
Good professor with a mathematician's sense of humor.
Goes through lots of examples in class with can be good and bad. Rather harsh grader, takes off 8pts out of 20 for forgetting bounds. Class does help for P/1 Exam but would recommend studying in groups. He seems genuinely interested in the course.
Interesting/unique guy, a little quirky. But very passionate and knowledgeable and the subject. Don't be afraid to ask questions he will be helpful.
Nice sense of humor, and generally a cool guy. His class was hard, but in a good, challenging way, not in a busywork way.
Classes are worthless. You will walk out of his lectures more confused than you went in. His examples are irrelevant, and his methods are unapproachable. I stopped going to lecture, and my grades started to go up.
Prof. Anderson is one of the weirdest professors I've ever had. His class generally involves him doing math problems on the board, while barely explaining what he's doing. You'll probably learn all information from your TA. He's pretty awkward and says the most random things... generally pretty funny. Otherwise, he seemed nice.
Professor Anderson is very eccentric, and can be entertaining to watch, but the lectures are almost completely useless. He's fine in office hours though, and explains things much better one on one.
Extremely quirky. Entertaining to listen and watch his odd mannerisms. Just writes on the board and hardly explains what he is doing. Does lots of examples which can sometimes help. My TA in this class was much more helpful and taught the info way better. Tests are much easier than the homework and are usually pretty basic problems.
He was great! Liked him a lot. Funny & is a nice guy if you approach him nicely. Ask clear questions b/c he's so smart sometimes he doesn't get kids' questions. Also make sure you go to class the day before the test. He basically gives you the test. The review always has practically the same problems as the test.
Unclear about how to solve problems, had to rely on TA. Wastes a lot of class time with proofs he doesn't expect you to know. One good thing was the tests. Expectations were very clear and tests were easier than homework problems. However, grading was harsh. 93% was required for an A.
This class is pretty easy...Professor Anderson can be scatterbrained in lecture, but I've heard he's a lot better in office hours. His tests are very straight forward, and the homework is significantly more difficult than the tests.
Not a good lecturer. He "teaches" by doing lots of random problems as inscrutably as possible. He has some issues with public speaking. The textbook is awful, get another to learn from. On the plus side, his eccentric mannerisms can be kind of amusing.
People complain about him not being clear in lecture...but they don't take time to think about what he says/writes before deciding to not understand. He might skip steps (what professor doesn't?) but he helps you out by slowing down to write on the board. Easy class overall...test averages are high because he doesn't throw in too many tricks.
Very nice guy, seems to care about his students. Lectures are a little scattered, but tests are very straight forward with few tricks. Homeworks are slightly more difficult, but follow in class examples and you receive completion points.
Easy A if you attend lecture, recitation, and do homework and practice problems. He's a nice guy, but very quirky. If you put in the class time and homework time, you will get the desired results. (I took 2574H as well with Gwanders; thought it was easier.) I recommend both.
While the notes he posts online are organized, the individual lectures along with the general structure of the course is incoherent. Although a 5xxx level course, the homework problems will contain graduate level proofs. Tests are considerably easier than HW due to this, but most will struggle for time. 2nd test median 60 -> max B for whole course
Gwanders is a great, funny guy. This is an honors class, so graduate material is to be expected. However, he gives hints to the harder HW problems in class. The class eats up time, HWs are long and the material takes time to learn. Lectures are clear if you keep your wits about you. The most challenging and most rewarding math class I've taken yet.
He's a nice person and always tried to help, but his lectures were such a bore because he sometimes focused on irrelevant stuff like simple algebra, instead of better explaining concepts and applications. Made math my least favorite of classes, and I am a math tutor :)
Excellent professor. Quirky, but still enjoyable in class. The class seems to skip around a lot between linear algebra and differential equations, but he makes everything done in class fit together. Would definitely recommend.
Professor Anderson is an incredibly quirky man. Sometimes when he's lecturing it seems like he's talking to himself as much as to the audience. Nonetheless, he presents the subject matter pretty well and with a small amount of time spent at office hours, you'll learn well and pass the class
Just does math... no explaining what so ever
Greg is the man. With just a hint of crazy, he makes lectures funny and easy to follow. Tests are pretty easy if you did the homework and his exam study guide(most profs don't give you one, and his tend to mirror the tests). Would take again. Shout out Greg. Shout out Nadia.
I was a big fan of Greg's. As others have said, he is very quirky, and I thought that helped the lectures go by more quickly. He assigns weekly homework, but if you complete it and the study guides he gives out before each exam, you should be very well prepared. He also provides a lot of helpful examples in lecture. Would recommend highly.
Not a good lecturer, he's one of those people who are really smart but don't know how to "dumb down" their explanation of the material so that students can follow it more easily. Often just writes down examples without giving a general procedure or explanation of what's going on. Very computational math class so sometimes you feel like a computer.
Prof Anderson goes through lecture very fast. He constantly skips steps that he assumes you can do. You need to attend pretty much every lecture. My TA is pretty much the reason I did well in this class.
Greg is a goofy and likable guy, but not the greatest teacher. He goes insanely fast in lecture, focusing on getting through as many example problems as possible more so than explaining concepts in depth. If you lose focus for a minute you may be lost. The worst part about his class is the absurd amount of homework he assigns. Actually, its absurd.
Great professor. He is one of my favorite that professors that I've every taken. The tests are relatively simple. If you know the homework, the tests are a breeze. Lectures are easy to listen to. He's really good and explaining and extremely easy to follow. Discussions are very useful, so don't skip them. Not much extra work is needed to get an A.
First of all, greg genuinely cares about students. He answers questions and makes comprehensive reviews for the midterms and the final which if you can do, you are set for the exams. Yes, his lectures were very quick, but the way to be successful is copy everything down in lecture and then use his awesome worksheets and TAs in discussion to learn.
Cares about teaching and math, sometimes slides in jokes. He teaches really fast, only focusing on questions that are tested in homework. Homework is easy if you've been to class, and midterms are exactly like the review sheets. He likes answering questions even if doesn't seem like it. Grading is very test heavy, as is common in CSE.
Greg Anderson is a great professor. His lectures are straight forward and will help you finish the long, tedious homework. The midterm and final are exactly like the review sheets, honestly that's the only thing you need to be successful on the tests. He seems like he cares about his students and he's actually really funny if you just listen in.
Professor GregWAnderson (aka Gwanders), is a very unique professor. In lecture, he can be quite entertaining, and is somewhat funny. He is often hard to pay attention to, and spends lecture going very fast doing some proofs that will never show up. He tries his best to make the class applicable and writes his own homework problems now and then.
In lectures, he has problems explaining the more complex topics. Sometimes, the lectures aren't even worth going to because of this. He is much more helpful in office hours, and is a very nice and caring person. The homework can get long, but the exams tend to be much easier than the homework which was nice.
Gwanders is his very own brand of funny. His lectures can be a bit dry at times, but if you really focus in and follow along they are helpful. Would recommend sitting toward the front- he's quiet, even with a mic. I'm taking another class with him next semester, he's a great teacher.
Gwanders was a very intelligent and caring professor and while the homework took forever and was graded harshly, the tests seemed very straightforward and were fairly simple.
Gwandy is a very smart dude, but his brain moves so fast it's hard to keep up with him. Tests are easy (much easier than the homework) and he can be pretty funny. Lectures are mostly just him going through examples rather than teaching concepts, so I consider them optional.
Interesting prof, nice guy with some quirks but not the greatest teacher. Usually goes through examples but sometimes goes through concepts that are confusing or irrelevant. TAKE THE CLASS THOUGH! The homework is sometimes long but tests are very reasonable and the final wasn't bad either. I'm taking his class again next semester.
Gwanders is a smart guy, but not a very good teacher. You don't have to attend his lectures, but as long as you attend your recitations, you will do fine. Lots of homework and those are sometimes difficult, especially his home made problems, but midterms and exams are easy.
Tests consist of homework problems and he does not try to trick you. Class has 3 "midterms" and a cumulative final. If you do the homework problems each week and study them before exams, you will get good scores. Lectures can be on the boring side but I recommend attending, though attendance is not mandatory. He can be funny at times.
Professor Anderson is the GOAT. From classic humor to riveting examples, he is able to want to come to lecture every day. Take his class.
He is not the best lecturer because he's quite scattered sometimes, so it takes a lot of focus to learn from the lectures. However, the homework is just a harder version of the tests so it is pretty easy to do well and know what will be on the test!
Very scattered lectures and ineffective explanations of complex topics. He's available during office hours but not very good at answering questions. The tests are fairly easy so it isn't that hard to get a good grade, but its difficult to learn the content when he strays from the textbook.
Great teacher - I learned a ton!! Hard work but worth it!!
2574H was hard work and Prof was rather different style. But holy moly is he clear. I wish he taught more. I seriously do. He's that clear.
Anderson is a great lecturer and teacher! Explains the topics and their implications very well. Tests were challenging but fair, meaning no trick questions or new material on exams.
Came for the maths, stayed for the memes.
If you attend lecture and most discussions you should do well. The course material itself is not that difficult.
Lectures are thorough and very helpful if you pay attention. The midterms and final test you on the concepts - no tricks or anything fancy. Averages for exams were usually in the 90s. I would take Prof Anderson again.
He really is a good dude, but has no idea how to teach in any fashion or manner. He should stay at home because he just copies off a sheet of paper and skips large amounts of steps. Really terrible at explaining anything at all.
His teaching abilities aren't the best because he knows so many shortcuts. Overall, you should be able to understand the content and how to do the problems if you put a little time into it. Definitely go to lecture because he will sometimes show you how to do some home-made homework problems. His exams were very easy if you did the study guide.
Hes a pretty good professor. His tests werent that difficult and were very similar to the study guides he made.
Greg Anderson was the man. While he may have been an extremely mediocre lecturer, he was funny, and best of all, he wrote pretty easy tests. If you do most of the homework and understand them, you will do great on exams. Everything was straight forward.
Greg often talks about how linear algebra and differential equations is the most important math you'll ever take, then proceeds to write example problems on the boards without explaining what they do or how to tell when they are appropriate to use. Don't expect to learn why any of his class is significant, just learn formulas and plug in numbers.
Horrible, horrible lecturer. Great guy, I respect him for that, but his lectures are ab-so-lutely worthless. Skips steps in examples, constantly messes up solutions, my advice is to learn the material on your own through homework and skip lecture. Study guides are very similar to exams, which are very reasonable in difficulty and grading.
Went to 6 lectures and still managed to get an A. Long story short, the lectures are useless. Do alot of independent studying and make sure you know the study guides very well, as they are essentially the exams.
Professor Anderson (Gwanders) was not the best lecturer. He mumbled a lot and did not explain what he was doing on the board. However, he is a very kind person, attentive to his emails, and a fair grader. Review problems are the same as the test and there were no trick questions. Do the HW and worksheets in lecture and the tests will be easy.
Seems like a nice guy. His tests are super straight forward. Outside of that, the lectures are okay. Like others have said, its more or less just example problems - which is helpful no doubt, but the "why" of it all isn't really there. Do the homework, show up to lecture and discussion, and study and you will do well.
Greg's lectures are comprehensive and extremely useful for homework if you take notes, but he moves fast so you have to keep up. His exams were straightforward as long as you know everything on the review sheet. Great class!
Gwanders was not the best lecturer-he sometimes got lost in his problems and mumbled a lot- but his tests were very fair and he does his best to help you. He does have a lot of sample problems and practice exams, which are very helpful. If you do the homework and the practice tests you'll be fine.
Prof Anderson is fantastic. He will sprinkle the "secret sauce" on every problem leaving you amazed. His examples are easy to understand, and he is good at answering questions. He has a hard time seeing and hearing so speak up, he will say " you have no idea what I am capable of before a midterm" and then the class will average a 93% on it.
Anderson is really funny and makes jokes that not everyone always understands. He will yell at your class for talking too loud, however. Not a fantastic teacher, but does offer you all the information in lecture that you will find helpful. Sometimes you will have to learn the topics from your TA or from the textbook.
You're paying to go to college. Don't waste your money taking classes with this guy. He fails to accurately explain even basic concepts covered in earlier calc classes. Homework is long and tedious, only redeeming quality is you can actually learn the material by doing the homework. His tests aren't hard- but again, don't waste a semester with Greg
I love Greg he's one of the funniest professors I've ever had. He does move through content pretty quickly and the homeworks are pretty long but if you do them and at least copy what he puts on the board in class you should be fine. His exams are always easier than expected.
Love him. He's a funny, quirky, old man. He's very clear in his explainations and is always very prepared. His letcures are very example heavy, which was very helpful for me in particular, but that varries from student to student. His tests are pretty similar to the problems he does in lecture and assigns in discusion and homework assignments.
Go to lecture. Greg is a very odd and funny old man. The textbook often teaches different methods than what you should know for exams, but tests themselves are never hard, practically a replica of the practice test. He doesn't explain most of the concepts just teaches you how to do problems, but that's probably due to time constraints.
Greg is overall a good professor. He goes over every topic in great detail and does several examples. He releases extremely helpful study guides before each midterm and the final. Greg also says some really funny things in class that make the lectures more engaging. I recommend!
Greg is truly a great professor. Goes through examples in class that follow the homework. The study guides for the test are exactly like the test. Makes it easy to get an A while also making sure you understand the material. I recommend going to lecture as his examples are of the same difficulty as the homework and tests. Funny guy too.
Greg writes quality midterm and final review sheets with detailed answer guides that are incredibly helpful for studying. Sometimes he is funny.
Love em
Professor Anderson is one of the best professors I've had since entering the U. He cares about his students, gives clear lectures, his exams follow his homework and study guides. No tricky questions, just be diligent (Linear was not that hard anyway), but the class average was around 90, so yeah, great class.
Anderson is a great professor, wants his students to learn and learn what matters. Will teach short cuts rather than going through long proofs. You will have some busy weekly hw/labs but as long as you understand the review sheet you will do well on the exams.
Greg was a great professor. He had very straightforward lectures, and lecture notes were useful for homework and tests. If you go to the lectures you should have no problem getting an A.
Greg Anderson is a saint in the math department. Even before I took this class I heard how great he was. Throughout the semester he was always helpful, especially throughout the Covid-19 stay-at-home order. He helped by lessening the course load during online learning and it truly helped! He's a class act. Try chatting with him, he likes puns.
Calculus 4 could not have been easier with Greg. He's funny, nice and super helpful. Easily one of the best Math professors ever. I think it would be harder to fail Gregs class then to pass it. If you are on the fence about taking a class with Greg, make sure to take it, you won't regret it.
Overall solid professor. The homework assignments and midterm study guides were always very similar to the test questions. He always went over a lot of examples in lecture, which definitely helped.
In lecture, Anderson was very scattered, skipped steps, and often ran out of time. Overall, I think he is an average teacher. I had Stanley (other professor) as a TA, and I would recommend him instead. Easiest math class I have ever taken, I got a 99% in the class. Do the homework and worksheets, understand the material, and it'll be an easy A.
His lectures were really example heavy which I enjoyed and his explanations got the point across. His reviews were really similar to the tests.
He is a funny old guy who puts a lot of work into the class. His lectures are very fast paced but the slides are very detailed and are great review for tests. He doesn't give trick questions on tests, just attend lecture and you will be golden.
One of the most laid back professors you'll ever have. He puts everything you need to know in the slides, you never need to read the textbook. The test questions are taken word for word (with different numbers) from the review packet he hands out. Also, the workload is light, about 3-4 hours of homework per week.
Greg is a great guy. He's just about the best you can get in the math department at the U. He can get a little confused during some lectures, or make small mistakes on slides, but the general lesson is still very well taught.
Professor Anderson is very knowledgeable in Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. However, his lectures are him reading off of a PowerPoint. For a math course, this is less than ideal and harder to follow along. As a student who has always been good at math, the course was just fine and I had no problems, but for others, it could be tough.
He was a super nice professor, but the lectures are LONG. Between lecture and the book the homework is doable if not a bit lengthy. The review sheets given before the tests are basically all you need to know which is super nice. Just do the work and you can do well. Definitely take Anderson for Lin Alg & Diff Eq
Professor Anderson's math class was very easy. He reads straight from his slides so the lectures aren't necessary. The homework was very very long but it was good preparation for the exams. Do the exam review they are so similar to the tests. The labs are pretty straightforward too. The class is a breeze don't stress about it.
This class was the easiest math class I have taken probably ever. The homework was really long but they really helped preparing for the tests. The labs were kinda pointless and the test reviews were pretty much the tests and that's all I did to study. He's a nice guy but literally reads off his slides. Loved the class though.
He runs out of time on many lectures usually because he spends too much time going into detail on things were already good at. His slides are all you need to pass the class, do the homework and labs too. As a person, hes a very friendly nerd and likes his nerdy jokes and analogies
Anderson is a good person and an okay professor. His lectures consist of him just reading off of a PowerPoint. Tests are easy, as they are always very similar to homework problems. The grading scale is unclear and possibly creates higher grade pars than normal as you can get an A- in this class with 94.2%. Overall, Anderson is a fine professor.
Tests are almost identical to the review sheets he provides. Lectures can sometimes be confusing or boring and over half the class skipped them, since he posts his lecture notes on canvas. He's not great at answering questions, but if you do the homework and review sheets you'll be fine.
His lectures were extremely boring. I honestly had trouble not falling asleep. Tests were relatively fair and easy if you put in the work. I would recommend skipping lectures and just going to the discussions and office hours, those are better uses of your time.
Greg was a great prof. I didn't go to lecture much, I just red the textbook, and all the exams are exactly like the practice. The lowest score I got on an exam was 97%. There are 12 homework assignments total which are pretty chill. Overall, easy class. Don't stress about it Greg is great. Honestly can't believe his rate my professor is pretty low.
Very very nice guy, makes funny comments during lecture but aside from that lectures are boring and a little confusing due to the nature of the slideshow presentations. Make sure you keep up with material if you don't attend class, do the exam reviews as they mirror content closely. Take syllabus gradelines with a grain of salt it's easy to do well
His lectures are pretty boring and he tends to go on tangents that cause him to rarely finish his slide deck. His lecture slides are very good, so attending lectures isn't always needed. The homework and labs aren't too hard, usually just tedious. The tests aren't too hard either, but he does dock points for very small things like notation.
My biggest problem with Greg is that he let's students with a lower grade, but higher homework score swap grades with someone with a higher grade, but lower homework score so it is impossible to know what grade you are going to end up with. He also just reads directly from his lecture slides that he posts, so I probably only went to 4 lectures.
Anderson is a nice guy but will have you struggling to stay awake during lecture. He just clicks through a premade slideshow every time. I would also recommend taking the CLA version of this course because the lab section is a waste of time for the most part.
Professor Anderson reads off of premade slideshows and his lectures are a bit slow, but the content is straightforward (but very shallow) and he is a very nice person. He posts study guides online, and they cover all of the content covered on the three midterms and final, so completing those and the weekly homework is enough to do well.
The content of this course was easy and it made me more interested in linear algebra. The lectures are boring and some of the homework is too long. Don't make the same mistake as me by skipping homework and lab assignments. The exams are very similar to the reviews he gives out before. Great and funny professor though
Took Math 1571H and 1572H with Prof. Anderson. He is not for everyone as he is relatively reserved and grades somewhat difficultly (went from ~45 students first semester to 8 second semester), but he is self-deprecating, a good teacher, and provides very helpful practice problems for exams. I personally enjoyed his classes very much.
Such a nice professor and very good at teaching. He was very caring for his students and often posted the notes if things were getting complicated in the lecture. Overall very nice and very good at teaching, would recommend!
