he sucks

I thought he was extremely helpful. It was a hard class, and having him as the lab guy helped as well. If I had any questions, I could ask him during office hours, and he would explain it in a whole new way. Very Highly Reccommended. :)
Great guy and means well, lectures are very fast paced and test are hard, Needed to go to office hours and toutoring to clarify many unanswered questions
Dr. B is a rad teacher, you just have to get past his harsh outer shell! He will make it very chanllenging but stick with it he is fair and SANE! even though you may feel otherwise at times! Hard class designed to weed out the non-hackers in Sci maj's. You don't have a choice so think positive! Don't let him scare you off!
The best!
An amazingly helpful and compassionate man. He may care too much about his students for anytime we did poorly as a class he seemed to radiate the sort of guilt inflicting disappointment that only a parent can conjur. It is important though to realize that this class is labor intensive, not complex, so mucho time must be devoted to the class.
The subject matter is a little difficult to understand, but if you go into his office hours Dr. B is more than willing to help. He doesn't give you the answer but he puts you on the right track.
Dr. B was great! He guides you thru everything, makes you question your own way of learning. Class seems impossible sometimes, but Dr. B always brings you back with his positive encouragement. Everyone who really tries learns a ton of chemistry and other stuff too!
does not know how to explain things, can not get his point accross to people. At the end of the class i was even more confussed.
Hey, don't be rippin on Dr. B. He explains chemistry at a level most college students can handle. He makes class interesting and gives you plenty of practice. Do the work, read the book and come to class, and you'll understand enough for a good grade. Keep it up Dr. B!
he is good.
Dr. Baxley isn't a thorough teacher. Personally I learned more from my tutor. He isn't very clear when explaining probably because he is brief and doesn't cover the material very well. I advise students who are struggling to drop before the drop date if they can if they have any doubt about passing.
Funny prof, likes his job, gets most students to learn something, like it or not. Advice: read the darn book! Do the homework-all of it. It's a hard class but worth the effort. You'll breeze thru a class or two at Poly. Thanks for all the help Dr. B
Excellent teacher, loves his work and his students and works twice as hard as he expects his students to. Anyone who says he's hard is right, you have to keep up with the homework and study a ton if you want to pass his class but in return he'll give you great work habits that will get you through college just fine.
Awesome instructor! Keeps things fun while staying on track. Good explanations and analogies. You can tell he tries really hard to explain things well and cares about his students.
Great teacher. Very helpful.
Great teacher. Knows his stuff and cares about how well his students do in the class. Very easy to get ahold of. Answers emails quickly, posts all assignments online, and even has set up a webboard for students to ask questions. Awesome teacher!
LOVE him! Best teacher ever.
Dr Baxley loves his job. He is not teaching because he couldn't make it in the real world and it makes all the difference. I am a history major and ranked 7th(or close) out of 100 starting students, so success is possible, even for non-science majors. The only problem is the lab instructors are stern graders. Good luck, you'll have fun.
great prof
Professor had a lot of knowledge in the field and a lot of outside examples.
horrible experience
He was a pretty good teacher if you go to him for help, but this is a difficult class. His disclaimer the first day is very true!!!
Great Teacher, happy to help any student, but you gotta ask for it.
Baxley is an amazing professor. You really have to read your book and study constantly though. It's a tough class. He is super helpful and loves what he does. Extremely smart!! It's crazy! He's an awesome prof, I reccomend him highly
Good teacher, but makes this class much harder than it needs to be. Read the book, because his lectures don't cover half of the test.
This class is not for slackers. Dr. Baxley is very smart in many fields of study. He is very clear and tells the student exactally what he expects of them. I recommend Dr. Baxley for both Chem 201A and Chem201B. Just know...this isn't a class that you can just skate by. You need to be a proactive student and do the homework and read the book.
He's about an average teacher - BUT he makes a great appearance of caring and I don't buy it. He's willing to look like he cares, but he will blame YOU if you don't pull it off or don't understand it. His lectures are pretty sufficient, tests are average, labs are fill-ins, no real writeup needed.
His test are very different from problems you work on in class. He also plays the favorite game. If you do not visit his office hours regualary and ask questions, even if you know the material, you will be graded a bit harsher
Hes DrB cause hes the bomb; youl be up in that text like you took it to prom; Flabby school skils are turned to muscle; as you mac homework probs like they were fudgy trufles; If you want to make him smile just bake brioche; better yet do your work and dont try to coast; Play the slacker an hes a GPA attacker; but DrB can also be a mighty benefctor
Dr. B is probably one of the best professors I've found at Cuesta. He responds to emails very fast, is always friendly/approachable during office hours, and he explains the material very well in lecture. He lists out EXACTLY what to expect on tests and has no hidden tricks up his sleeve. Do the hw, take notes, and you'll do fine. Highly recommended
He's a great professor who genuinely cares about you and your success. Ask and he'll answer. He has his own web forum for us! I hardly read the book all semester. He bends over backwards to explain everything! He ties the material to real world examples. He's naturally hilarious too. A+ professor!
Very tough class, but he is a great teacher and goes to great lengths to help students understand. Grades tough too, but is very available for help and knows the subject well. Very nice guy who works hard to help everyone, and sometimes hilarious. If you do all the work and put in the effort, you can do well in the class.
Baxley is a good teacher. His tests are hard, but his lectures are good and he's easy to listen to. I didn't have a very good experience in the class, but I learned a lot from him nonetheless. I would recommend taking general chem from him.
Dr. B is my favorite teacher I've ever had. He is extremely helpful and clearly wants to help students succeed. He may be tough, but whenever I went his office hours he seemed delighted to explain whatever I was confused about. Baxley could be teaching at Cal Poly or many other places, but he chose Cuesta. It's clear that he happy with his job.
One of my favorite teachers! Great at guiding someone through this tough course, as long as you do the work. Always friendly, funny, patient, and he really got me interested in chemistry besides!
If you like really generic jokes, teaching yourself how to do chemistry, and having 3 homework assignments a week and a quiz every friday, this class still isn't for you. Terrible.
an amazing teacher, he makes me want to try as hard as I can in class. His tests are hard, nothing will come easily in his class. He helps with having office hours, he keeps chem motivated and interesting. It takes a guy like him to make me want to come to school everyday! thanks dr. B your work ethic does not go unnoticed!
Pompous, rude, and not helpful. Worst teacher I have had in my whole college career.
Dr. B was great. Very helpful, answers questions at length and very quickly. He made chemistry fun. He says he loves teaching at Cuesta, and it shows!
Dr. is awesome. Funny. Helpful. Fair. Best science teacher. Ever.
I know people that go on here and comment are people who either got a great grade or a poor grade. In my opinion Baxley wasn't helpful for me. I would go to him for help and he would say things were "obvious" when they were not obvious to me. Some people might think he's great but I didn't. Very tough class.
My absolute favorite professor. I struggled with chem a lot and as hard as I tried i still ended up with a B in the class, but Dr. B helped me the entire time. He puts up practice problems before exams and sets aside time for you to ask him questions. It is a hard class, but if you apply yourself, he gives you the tools necessary to get a good grad
Best professor I've ever had.
I took both gen. chem classes from Dr. B, I was in his class his first year at cuesta, 2004-2005. Although I went on to graduate from Cal Poly, Dr. B was still the best professor i ever had. He was a friend, he was funny, compassionate and challenging but reasonable and engaging. I'm glad that 7 years later people are still saying the same things.
f you don't like Dr. B, you just don't like life. He is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. He is funny and entertaining. He truly cares about his students and will go above and beyond to help them learn.
when I go for help he makes you feel like you should know things after he just covered them. I passed with a good grade but no thanks to him. Be prepared to learn it all on your own. He is no help.
I had Dr. B for 2 classes but it felt like 3. Loads of great info, very relevant to the real world. Chem is hard, but Dr. B is super helpful especially in office hours and he really cares. One of the best profs at Cuesta!
I had Baxley for 201A a long time ago, and 201B last year. If you do the work, you'll pass. If you work hard, you can get an A or B. Very helpful and patient for me and my friends who went to his office hours and also helps after class. I'm glad I was in his classes.
Dr. Baxley rocks! I learned so much from him last semester! Great lectures and really helps you learn how to think about chemistry and solving problems.
Dr. B is a nice guy and loves his subject. But with that being said, he is possibly one of the worst teachers I've ever had, and I have learned nearly nothing from him. His lectures are absolutely pointless, so count on teaching yourself and reading the book inside out. His tests are awful and ridiculously more difficult than his hw and lectures.
Dr. B is one of the best. I don't know what the negative comments are all about. You do have to do some work on your own, but you learn something about chemistry every class. His lectures are great, although there isn't a lot of structure like some other teachers. Chem is hard, but doable if you come to class and listen to Dr. B!
Baxely's lectures were pointless and confused me more than they helped. It always seemed like the material "taught" in class was different than the homework and the tests. The new textbook was confusing and almost no help as well. A very hard class with an unhelpful teacher. Definitely read the good comments AND the bad before deciding.
Dr. Baxley is so patient with me asking all of my questions. He makes handouts for us almost every day and gives us lots of practice. Funny and informative lectures. Great class!
Dr. Baxley is a straight-forward, genuinely dedicated chemistry teacher. He's passionate about his subject. Spend too much lecture time telling you how to study, but also gives loads of help outside class (online, tutoring, etc.). High standards and expectations, but achievable if you study and don't skip class. Labs are long, and so are lectures.
Makes CHEM fun!! Very helpful, but do the reading before class. Come prepared, take good notes and do assigned problems before all quizzes and exams!!
Dr. Baxley was my lab instructor (I had a separate professor for lecture). He cleared up many things that were either glazed over, or unclear when taught by my lecture professor. He always promptly responded to my incessant e-mails, and really cared about my success in Chem 201A! I wish I had him as my main professor for this class!
Beware! I wish I would have taken the advice of other students and avoided Dr. B. He made Chem 201A one of the hardest classes I've ever taken (and I've taken O. Chem and Bio Chem). Do yourself a favor and take chemistry from someone else.
Dr. B is great. He always answers questions on Piazza super fast and gets our tests back quicker than any other teacher. He has free chemistry tutoring! His lecture notes and reading material are really helpful. The class is hard but worth it in the long run. Funny guy too, for a teacher.
I loved Dr B! He really gets to know his students and gives ample opportunities for his students to succeed! The class takes some study time and the tests can be tough, but if you study and do HW you can easily get a B. He is super interesting and I loved the lectures, I'm sad I can't have him anymore!
Hands down the best lecturer I've ever had. Makes class super zen even for anxious people like me. 201b is the point in Chem where you must understand concepts not just memorize steps. He is unapologetic about this & it's reflected in his exams but I left feeling thoroughly prepared for o Chem. Super clear & helpful but you must work hard.
I liked Dr. Baxley a lot. He's a pretty chill guy, he definitely loves and knows a lot about his subject, and he's quick to help when students ask for it. His class was pretty difficult though, but bear in mind that chem is a harder subject for me. So, I'd definitely recommend him, but be prepared to work pretty hard to get a good grade.
Baxley is a great teacher he has many years of experience in the field. His lectures a very helpful, I almost never had to read. What you learn in class and in lab is what will be on the tests and quizzes. The lab was especially good, very well organized, professional, and lots of fun.
Professor Baxleys class was not easy but with that being said he makes it as enjoyable as chemistry can be. Be prepared to put in the hours. Expect around 20 hours a week minimum. I would highly recommend his course to others. He states that if you get less than a C on the first exam you wont pass the class based on statistics. This holds true.
Professor Baxley made chemistry enjoyable. He was a great teacher, helpful in office hours and a good lecturer. I also had him as a lab professor, and he was great there as well. Very insistent on being called Dr.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T KNOW ALGEBRA. Probably 70% of the homework, quizes and test problems require algebra. If you are good at math you can easily earn a B if you put in some effort. Very few people earn A's. Dr Baxley is condescending to some students, but overall is a clear and good teacher.
Dr. B is the best! His lectures are funny and helpful and kept me interested. He was really nice to everyone in the class. He'll help you figure out answers to questions pretty much any time by email. He has lots of extra worksheets. This class will help you succeed later. One of my favorite professors at Cuesta and way better than most at Poly.
I really liked Dr. Baxley's class. It's not easy but you'll learn a lot and be very prepared for later classes. He's very helpful outside of class and posts lots of practice problems. He writes funny exam problems sometimes that makes class interesting.
I liked Baxley's class. I learned a lot even if I didn't get a great grade (I didn't have a lot of time to study). He's respectful of all of this students and will help if you need it. High standards though so I had to work for it.
Dr. Baxley is very enthusiastic and does so many things to help students learn. He cares a lot about his students and you can tell that he likes teaching. He tries to make class fun but he will prepare you for your next classes too. Chem isn't my thing but I liked the class and I think I've learned a lot. Great choice for chemistry!
Excellent instructor. He teaches this class at a University level, so be prepared to work hard. He has practice tests, practice quizzes, study guides, etc. Take advantage of these! Tests are HARD, especially the final. Read the book! Very few students get an A in this class. Funny guy but might seem condescending if you don't have a sense of humor.
Great prof for the partially online class-I couldn't take chem 2 or 3 days a week and he made this work well for me. Thanks Dr. B!
Take chem with Dr. Baxley if you can. He'll help you learn chemistry and he's funny too. He's really enthusiastic so class is fun and informative.
I had taken CHEM201A a few years ago and failed so I was a little nervous to retake this class. However, I had a much easier time the second time around, and Baxley is a great teacher. He has a very dry sense of humor, which I share, and found engaging. He makes himself available whenever it's needed and is always willing to help students.
I feel like the level of difficulty of the test questions does not match the difficulty of the homework. Use mastering chemistry. It helps a lot. There's a lot of work that has to be put in to pass, but it is possible to pass.
Wow, not sure what I can say but Dr. B is a great teacher. Lectures are fun but you learn and practice a lot. He went out of his way to help me through some tough times away from school. You'll learn some neat stuff, not just textbook problems.
One of my favorite teachers! Funny, helpful, and makes class enjoyable. Lots of helpful materials.
Dr. Baxley is great! He gives tons of great handouts and practice problems. He makes lectures interesting and sets you up for success. He does a great job at making learning fun. I wish I had teachers like him for other classes.
Baxley is very helpful if you show him that you are working hard. The hybrid class(computer/in class) may be difficult for you if cannot teach yourself chemistry. Baxley will give you lots of worksheets and prepare you for the tests, but you have to stay on top of your work because you only have one in class mini lecture a week.
This is a 1 unit class that is set up for the students benefit. If you have the room in your schedule , take this class! It's only an hour long and you get a professor as your tutor! There's no homework, quizzes or exams. Like I mentioned before, this class gives you the chance to double check homework, labs and ask questions. Check it out!
Had him for three chem courses, including 201A and 201B, he is the best there is. You will be hard pressed to find another instructor with the same amount of knowledge as well as the ability to teach it. Truly cares about his students and wanting them to pass. One of the best professors I have had!
I have been to several colleges before Cuesta, and Dr. Baxley is one of the top 5 professors/teachers I've ever had. He gives you everything you need to learn and move on to the next level, which I have learned is more important than getting an easy A. He knows his stuff, and knows how to teach it too.
Baxley is a solid teacher; he knows his stuff and is very helpful when you ask questions. The one caution is that he is very sarcastic 85% of the time. So if that's your speed then he's the prof for you. The class is tough, no getting around it, but Baxley is the best choice for this course.
Greg lectures are well, he makes things straight forward. his quizzes aren't bad and his exams are bit hard. on the downside, he's unorganized and sometimes changes the exam dates. he is very caring and funny, if you but effort for this class you will do fine.
Dr. Baxley is an amazing teacher and respectable human. He truly cares about his students. He is helpful and funny. And if you are struggling with a question, he will work through it with you till you understand. I highly suggest taking his course. And if he isn't available, his wife, Dr. Baxley, is also a tremendous teacher. Runs in the family!
I wish this class was harder honestly. But it is a freshman level course and intro to Environmental Studies. Dr. Baxley creates engaging lectures that are entertaining and informative. I have learned a lot this semester despite their being very little grunt work. No homework, few quizzes and tests, 1 group project, infinite laughter and good vibes!
This was one of the worst times Ive ever had in a class. His tests are nothing like the review guide, the questions are all worded so weird, he makes up his own elements (whats the point of learning the periodic table?) our final exam was on zoom and had nothing from the first half of class. Hes unhelpful and rude in emails, take Dr. G!!!
He is very caring for his students, his lectures are pretty good. Quizzes aren't bad, exams are a bit hard. the only thing is that he is very unorganized, changes exams dates. sometimes changes them way sooner.
Dr. Baxley was amazing with the COVID transition. He sent lots of inspirational messages and lots of class updates. He put together an online course that was better than most of my other teachers, even the one who always teaches online. He's super caring and does funny things to make class fun. Not sure how he could have been rude, he was so nice!
Professor Baxley is amazing. This is not an easy class and takes a lot of time and dedication to pass but theres no one better to guide you through the confusing mess that is chem than Mr. Baxley. He cares about his students and will always make time if you need help. Attend class, ask questions, re do sample problems and you'll do fine!
Baxley is another one of the amazing chemistry professors at Cuesta. Chemistry is a very scary word and Baxley makes the course simple enough to understand for anyone. Although it is simple you still have to put in the work for those grades, informative study guides for all tests and quizzes. I suggest taking Baxley for the lab portion as well.
Dr. Baxley is one of the BEST teachers I've ever had, by far. SUPER genuine and caring, willing to help as much as needed. Class is tough, watch lecture videos if you want to understand because there isn't a ton of review in class unless you ask. Provides lecture notes. Book reading is assigned but not necessary. Take 201Ax for extra help, worth it
Dr. Baxley is one of the best professors I've had! He genuinely wants his students to succeed and is very understanding about late work. While he can be a little unorganized at times, he makes up for it by always being available to his students and with self deprecating humor. General chemistry is not an easy class, but Baxley makes it achievable!
Professor Baxley was the highlight of my semester. We only had him for the chemistry half of the course before switching to another professor for physics and it is safe to say the entire class missed him. He's nice but honestly, he is a good teacher. He wants you to understand and do well in his class. If you ask for help he will help you.
Professor Baxley is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's super understanding and cares about his students. I learned a lot and you can tell he is passionate about his job. He is not only a good teacher, but he's a great person in general. Highly suggest taking his class.
Mr. Baxley designs his class to be difficult and is packed with a lot of material. If you spend time studying you will do well. He always responds to your emails and is one of the most helpful teachers I have ever had. This class is not easy, but he makes it a lot less painful than it is.
Good teacher, deserves a 5 star.
Not a hard grader, but a fair one. Tests are hard but if you really apply yourself you will get an A. No late work penalty. Always there for help. I could message him at 10pm and have an answer in 2 minutes. Not a ton of extra credit but you can tell he loves his students and will do whatever he can to help them succeed.
Professor Greg is amazing. He was so patient and always available to answer my questions. The Canvas pages could be organized better but he has lots of extra problems and videos available. Expects students to think about chemistry. He cares about students and he brings food to class! Very fast grader and responds on email or Pronto quickly too.
Best teacher I will probably ever have. I was very intimidated by chem, but if you take Baxley, he will make it fun and easy. He is very accessible on pronto and will make sure you get your question answered. Chem is hard, but put in some work and you will be fine. very lenient on late work and understanding. He care about his students.
Dr. Baxley is a fair, clear, supportive professor. There is a lot of material, but it is laid out well & if a student interacts with everything he offers - and stays ahead of assignment due dates - it's possible to do very well in this class. Dr. Baxley wants his students to succeed & it is palpable in his teaching style, which is adaptive.
I like his lecture format because he gives out notes for you to fill in, which helps us know
I really liked Baxley. I felt like he made the learning interesting and tied it to current events. Never made me feel dumb for having a question and tried very hard to engage the class. He even brings in stuff to lab to keep you engaged and make labs fun. Also the chemistry memes on his shirts are incredible.
Dr. Baxley is thorough and works to make complex material accessible. His tests are difficult, but if you study you will be prepared. He is very available by email and outside of class for detailed help.
Baxley makes chem engaging and manageable. Attend class, study diligently, and utilize unstuck ai - it's a game-changer for test prep. The workload is heavy, but he's an understanding professor who wants students to succeed.
