Interesting class. I had no interest in art before I took this class as a pre requisite. He was knowledgeable and passsionate about his class. Easy class, I'd definitely recommend him!
He's too interested into art and thinks everyone else should be as well. doesnt have an office so its impossible for you to get any help after class. recommend another teacher.
Great guy, very understanding if you have any questions or problems. Attendance should be easy because it is fun to be in the class. Highly recommend.
hes an awesome teacher. hes so passionate about what he teaches and thats what we need more. I would definitely recommend him.
a good teacher
He is a really good with the subject of Art. His exams, are another story. They are ok, but he likes to throw in a few good curveballs. So do study the book, not just what whe says in his lectures. He is better than most of the other "professors" teaching this course.
He is a great teacher, and if you need something he is always wiling to help. His tests are easy if you go to class and he does a review session the day before and goes over what is going to be on the test. Take good notes though. We had a test that the class did poorly on and he gave an extra credit quiz to help bring up our grades.
EXAMS ARE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE!!! His exams do not contain anything he goes over in review the day before nor what contains in his daily lectures. about half the class ended up failing, i was lucky to pass with a B
He is so funny! He really makes the class enjoyable and fun to go to. His tests are easy as long as you go to class every day. Otherwise you won't know what's going on. It's a really good class and I learned a lot.
He's okay. I dont really understand why ppl think hes so great. The text book was SO expensive & we only used the first 5 chapters out of like 14.. waste of money. He gets WAY to sidetracked & REALLY behind. He shows really weird films too. Hes not as funny as ppl say-- u have to have his sense of humor i guess??
Easiest class ever taken. We took 2 tests and 2 extra credit quizes. The only other grade was a paper on any piece of art you went to see. You learn alot about things you might actually use in life.
Awesome professor. Doesn't grade on attendance, but if you show up and pay attention, you're nearly guaranteed an A on the test. No homework other than one Art analysis paper, can be tough if you don't know your stuff, just mention all the terms learned in class and you'll get an A. Very interesting discussions, highly recommended.
Other than the fact that he plays really werid music before class that all sounds the same, but appearently different bands this man knows what he's talking about with art. Great teacher! Honestly, he really wants you to do good in this class. Lots of class discussions! Lots of participation, but in a good way! Great Teacher!
Once again great class! DO NOT miss a single day of class or you will seriously have no idea what's going on! ALWAYS be on time and in class or it may not be worth your while if you have no idea what's going on. He was very helpful and understanding.
He is a super nice guy. His class is real easy if you go. If you don't go to class you will have no idea what is going on and the test will be really hard. He is a really nice guy...a little goofy but he is a great teacher to take!
I cannot recommend this professor. He is got some positive sides, and class discussions are one of them. Other than that, he doesn't care about anything. Don't bother to write him an email because you will never hear it back. Doesn't tell you grades, gives poor test review, no any sort of study guides. You are suppose to memorize the whole book.
AMAZING TEACHER!!! TAKE HIM!!! so passionate about what he does and so nice and understand a great guy and an amazing teacher!!! RECOMMENDED!
His lectures are very enjoyable. He goes over all everything and breaks everything down. But you can?t miss a class. You have a book, but you dont necessarily need to read it if you attain every class. If you understand the material, test will be easy. To earn a good grade on the one paper he assigns paper, use all the terms. I highly suggest him!
[My Format/Grade: 16wk MWF / A] His lectures are VERY entertaining, informative, and thought-provoking. I LOVED this class and my interest in art is very low. 400pts total: three EASY tests worth 100 each and one 5-6pg paper. 15pt xtra credit quiz. Attendance optional but if you miss class you will be very lost. Nice guy, fun and easy class.
Greg is awesome! I had him for art 1100. I am totally not into art, but he made me like it. There are 3 tests, 1 paper and a 15 point extra credit quiz. The tests are a breeze as long as you attend class. If you miss more than a day or two, you are pretty screwed for the tests. I'd definitely recommend taking Greg!!
Hes a good teacher with a great sence of humor, must pay attention to his lecture and take good notes. Some of his lectures is not in the book, and will come up in the exams. I recommend him!
Decent class if you need to get the art requirement out of the way. It's basically all lectures so you have to show up or you won't know anything. Grades are 3 tests and a research paper (must go to Chicago Art Institute). He's kind of snobby but is very passionate about the subject and goes over things more than once if people have questions.
Easy class but you have to show up, everything he goes over in lecture is on the test but might not be in the book, get someone's notes if you miss. He's pretty quirky and kind of annoying depending on your mood but he loves what he teaches and does do a good job of teaching it. Does drift off on tangents sometimes but overall good professor.
Professor Binder is a great choice for anyone looking to learn about a general techniques of art. He is experienced and is clear on the information discussed. He provides a powerpoint lecture every class, nonmandatory attendence, one writing, study guides for each of the 3 exams, and no cumulative final. If you attend the lectures, you'll learn a lot
Professor Binder is a great teacher for anyone who wants to learn about general art techniques. His Art-1100 consists of PowerPoint lectures and nonmandatory attendence. However, if you don't attend the lectures, don't expect to do well in the class. There are 3 exams and 1, 2-3 page research project, but there's no homework and no cumulative final
He's extremely passionate about art, he's a good teacher but you really need to go to all of the classes because if you miss something from his very long lectures your kinda sol. I did like him but the only thing that annoyed me was that every time someone would try a interpret an art piece he put up he would always tell them they were wrong
The class is very easy. Just make sure you take good notes and be there for class and you will totally past. Hes very helpful and hilarious and enjoys talking about art. loved his class
The class was great. Just make sure you take good notes and be there for class. He's very helpful and hilarious and enjoys talking about art. loved his class
Very interesting class, there are only a few tests and one paper. He's very knowledgeable on the topic and up front about his expectations for the class. If you pay attention in class the tests are extremely easy.
This class is entirely lecture-based, but it's very conversational and usually really funny, so it's easy to follow. He's very passionate about art and he loves when students participate in lectures. Every class will be really important for his tests though, so if you're absent a lot this class isn't for you. Probably my favorite COD class so far.
Overall a great teacher. Doesn't assign busy work, lectures are very conversational, and he has a lot of interesting information about certain pieces of art. Really knows his stuff. EASY A IF YOU SHOW UP!! He goes over almost every question of the test the day before.
Class is simple if you attend the lectures, goes off the book at times using his preference of artists, those are the questions on the test you have be there for. Class starts with a new music artist, you will learn a lot not just about art. Loves students to give feedback, would definitely take another class from him.
This professor is really great if you're looking for an interesting take on art history. He makes sure the class understands the material before moving on and will continue to refresh your memory. He makes sure you're set up to do well and understand the material. Fun, interesting, sarcastic lectures. JUST GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION!! :)
Has a bit of an ego and classes can drag; however, I like Greg as a teacher: he knows what hes talking about, makes the material easy to understand well in addition to being reasonable in his expectations of his students. As long as you listen to what he says and pay attention to what he teaches, you'll have no trouble passing the class.
Greg, is the best teacher I had this semester! If he offered more classes or if I could take art 1100 again I would in a heart beat! I have a blue card and he understands that I need help, so he always helped me when I got stuck on something. He is very funny! I learned so much from him! I love that he plays music before class. I give him an A++++!
Greg is a very passionate instructor an it shows during every lecture. Very clear on what he expects from you. He doesn't take attendance so it is absolutely up to you on how well you want to do in his class. Miss class and you will most likely struggle because he gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Read the book, show up and pay attention
I LOVE GREG. He is sooooo funny and animated. He is VERY passionate about art, and I have to say it did wear off on me. As long as you listen to him, take notes, and attend class you should get an A. He goes over the test material before each test. You are required to go to the Art institute and write a paper on 1 painting. 30 pt EC quiz given.
4 grades. 3 tests and 1 paper. Tests aren't too bad if you show up and read. The paper is a little difficult, but it's not back breaking work. The lectures were pretty good overall, but could get boring.
I was dreading this class but ended up enjoying it. Three tests, a paper, and an extra credit quiz. Go to class, take notes (he literally will say, "make sure you have this in your notes") and study them a couple days before the test. Lectures were interesting for the most part and I left with a better appreciation and understanding of art.
I enjoyed Professor Binder's class more than I thought I would, 3 tests, 1 paper and a 30 point extra credit quiz. Showing up to class isn't completely mandatory, because he covers what's in the book, but show up at least once a week.
Enjoyable class especially if you don't know much about art. He's a very opinionated fellow, and he can come off as a little "forward" at times. But that's only because he wants to maximize your understanding of art. You'll leave with plenty of knowledge thanks to his expertise. 2 exams, 1 extra credit quiz, and a paper. Field trip REQUIRED.
One of the best teachers at COD, one of the best teachers I've ever had. Very passionate about the lectures and Art in general. Very clear and sometimes hilarious during lectures. I took this class for general education credits, but I've got much inspiration out of it, way more than my major classes. Love teachers with such passion.
He acknowledges that not everyone is a art major, therefore he simplifies the material and also tries to make it entertaining, most importantly though he doesn't give you extremely difficult exams. If you show up to class and even half pay attention you will definitely learn. Goes over basically every question coming in the exam and tests prior.
Greg (doesn't like to be called Prof. Binder), Is very passionate about the arts. He can come across a little harsh and opinionated in the beginning. After you get to know him you'll understand his style and appreciate it. He explains every topic thoroughly so you'll have a broad understanding and prepares you for exams. Very few exams and 1 paper.
I did not have a good experience in this class. I was a student who was present for six weeks straight, I got mono and had to miss classes. Attendance isn't required however it is necessary to test well in class. I was allowed to make up one missed test and worked hard on the final paper. I received a 59% on a paper that had taken days to do, sick
Greg is a really knowledgeable teacher and artist. He goes in depth on specific backstories and paintings and makes what would otherwise be bland, really interesting. He also shares some music in the beginning/breaks of every class, which is sweet. Comes off as a bit harsh or opinionated in the first few classes, but truly does a great job.
Binder was such a good professor! He likes to lecture, but his lectures will keep you interested, he's so funny. His passion for art shows in class and you can definitely tell the man knows what he's talking about. He's really accessible outside of class and truly wants his students to do well. I would highly recommend Binder for anyone taking art!
I honestly have really enjoyed this class, but i can see why others don't. Greg can be opinionated and a little harsh, but overall you can tell he cares a lot about what he is teaching. The only grades are 3 tests, a paper that is super hit or miss, and an extra credit quiz. attendance isn't mandatory but you should definitely go to pass the tests.
I definitely notice alot more in the world that I might have looked past, or have taken for granted. All he is looking for is an effort to better humanity.
This is a super easy teacher for art 1100. He tends to go off on tangents though. Honestly show up he will tell you what you need to know, go off on a long tangent and you can zone out til the next notes. He says read the book but don't. He will tell you what to study so show up take notes. He goes off book too and won't go over those notes.
He talks fast, but will repeat what you didn't catch if you ask. I personally didn't look at the text book once, but that was because I paid attention during the lectures. The tests are a joke if you listen & brush up on what you're uncertain about. He genuinely wants you to pass & is a hilarious teacher. If you want him to like you, PARTICIPATE.
Professor Binder knows what he's talking about. Attendance and listening is key to passing class. I didn't purchase the book because I attended class regularly. Ask questions. He goes over material before an exam. A tough grader on the paper. The course consist of participation, 3 tests (worth most of your grade) and one paper.
Greg is a little brash, but is passionate. The grades are three unit tests, a paper, and an EC quiz. He says you need the book, but you don't if you show up to class & take notes. Study notes before tests and you'll be fine. *HARD grader on unit paper. I had a meeting with him and took notes of all his critiques & still got docked pts. Chill guy!
Greg is a great teacher. When we moved to online classes he was very flexible with the times. (coronavirus) He overall was very interesting and easy to follow.
Greg is very passionate about art and makes you want to learn about it. He was very understanding of the current circumstances (COVID), and cared about how we were all doing despite the hard times. He made me more interested in art, helped increase my knowledge by a lot, and made the class easy and interesting. HIGHLY recommend him as a professor!!
Professor Binder was a super cool person and cared more about our well-being in this time more than my mother. 10/10 class. Interesting and fun. He grades essay's easily and you have very light tests. Always show up to review day. Seriously, take a class with him, he's awesome.
Greg is a super awesome person, and he clearly is passionate about art and his job. You don't need to waste your money on the textbook, just take notes in class and make sure to show up to review days before the test. Extremely understanding about the circumstances right now and overall just wanted the best for his students.
VCM class. Lectures were always interesting and he tells a lot of good stories. Not an art major but came out with a pretty good understanding of how art is put together. Participation makes this cat fun. He is flexible because of the pandemic. Graded on few things. Take good notes and you will do well on tests. Not everything is in the book.
I took art 1100 for credit and was honestly dreading it until I was in Gregs class. Even if you have no interest in art at all, he will make sure to change your mind. His lectures are interesting and engaging.
This has seriously been my favorite class at COD so far. Greg is super charismatic and passionate about art, and makes lectures really interesting and fun for even those like me who weren't interested prior to the class. The grading criteria for the class is super clear, I took the 12 week class and we had 3 exams and 1 paper. I would take again!!!
I was not expecting to learn so much in this class and be able to use it forever. Greg is an amazing professor that cares for his students and makes an environment in which you want to learn more. You should at least take one of his classes because this comment doesn't do the justice of how awesome he is.
SO this is a great virtual class as he only gave 3 tests and provided notes/study guides for each one which were exactly like the test. We had 1 paper to do which he graded very annoyingly as if any of us cared about the subject. He admits that if we were in person he would not provide us with any notes/help and we'd have to work for the grade.
It exceeds my expectations, what I learned I will be able to use forever. A professor that cares for his students. Easy class, fun, new ideas in each class.
Overall pretty easy course and Professor Binder makes it enjoyable to learn. You definitely need to take notes every class, which is very helpful for tests and the paper. The textbook isn't essential, but it helps for the paper. Tests were pretty easy, the paper was more challenging, but he's more than willing to help you.
Intro to Visual Art and Culture with Greg was a great experience! You can tell he is very passionate about the subject matter. No homework. Due to the pandemic, he let us take the exams at home with notes. Book isn't necessary. He always tells you what to take note of. He kind of nitpicks on the paper but just don't overthink it.
The class was overall very easy and I would professor Binder again. He is a bit odd when teaching the class as he tends to get overly excited for the class. Tests are easy and open note. As long as you write decent notes and write down whatever he tells you to write down you will get an A.
professor binder was something i don't regret at all. he was funny and an amazing teacher. This is a discussion class so be prepared to talk as he heavily encourages everyone to. There is also a textbook assigned which you read on your own each unit/chapter (no one in my class did so we got lectured a lot)
He's humorous, intelligent, and ACTUALLY teaches you things you'll use in your day to day life.Unless you can find someone to share their notes, you don't wanna miss his class. Exams solely revolve around his lectures. The final assignment is an essay, you'll have to utilize everything you learn to analyze fine art, ASK HIM FOR HELP WITH YOUR OUTLINE
Could be nicer
I went into this class not being interested in art and taking it for credit. Binder made the class very interesting and engaging. There's only four assignments throughout the semester. Three tests and one paper and all are fairly easy. You don't really need the book since he goes over mostly everything in class. Recommend taking him!
His class was great and really easy if you're going to class. even if you don't he has review days before exam day so that's really helpful. He only grades you off of 3 exams and a paper that's due before the last exam.
Excellent course! I recommend this course even to people who dont care about art. This class is easy A as long as you show up to the lectures and take good notes. He provides many extra credit opportunities and there are only 4 very easy Quizes and 1 Essay. Genuinely hard to do bad on test they are open note basically. Overall fun class.
His lectures are very organized, and he tells us what to write in our notes. There is no homework. The only big assignment that you need to do is write a paper on a painting that you choose, and he shows you how to write the paper. I would totally take his class again. If you are interested in taking a class like this choose this professor!!!
honestly super easy and fun class if you fail this class you were really trying hard to fail. He won't take attendance but go it fun, easy, and makes the exams so easy.
Great professor and great class overall! Lectures all the time, attendance isn't mandatory but you should attend as much as possible. The tests are online, at home, and open book. One small paper that is graded mainly on effort. He is very interesting and obviously loves the material that he teaches. Absolutely would recommend this class.
Mr. Binder was a bit condescending and pretentious at times if he didn't agree with the opinion you gave but he offered engaging lectures that made his class well worth it. You will learn a lot from this class and rarely be bored.
Professor Binder is an amazing professor and I could not recommend him more! He is passionate about what he does and encourages a positive learning environment. He cares for his students, even outside of the classroom, and makes everyone feel included. He is understanding that not everyone is an art major but still manages to make this course fun.
Awesome professor
Class was fun, consisted of 3 exams 1 essay for the summer course.
Cares about the material and wants students to participate and succeed.
Professor Binder I believe was a good teacher, he truly does care about the subject. There were a few exams and one large paper, but he gives you plenty of time to work on it, there are also some extra credit opportunities. Overall I would recommend him! (sometimes hard to hear him depending on where you sit during lecture..)
Professor Binder is a good teacher overall, he seems to be really passionate about art. I learned quite a lot in this class, especially with his lectures. However, he is somewhat rude at times and I don't really appreciate how he had talked to me in one situation. Other than that, he's good at teaching this course and knows what he's talking about.
A great professor that is not too harsh on anything, he is there to help and gives you time if it is needed. The tests are not hard because everything is covered in the lectures very clearly, take good notes! Would definitely recommend him!
He loves talking about art, and most of his lectures are on the test, making it easier if you attend. He offers helpful test reviews and 30 extra credit points since attendance isn't graded. However, he talks too fast, slurs his words, and can be rude. The class drags, and he's strict about phones. You need to go to Art Institute for one project.
Easily my favorite professor this semester. Cares so hard about art, and will make you care too. Read the book, exams are open-note/book. Class will be a breeze if you take notes, pay attention and do the extra credit! Binder will grade you fairly for your effort, and though attendance isn't required, it makes the class easier! TAKE HIM.
Honestly Greg is very passionate about art, and his class consisted mainly of lecture and discussion. Obviously attendance isn't required, but being present makes taking the exams so much easier. You have few requirements, but make sure to do them as well as you can. Don't purchase the textbook if you attend lectures.
Was an all around good proffesser. He was a bit confusing at times but was always willling to help and seemed like a great guy
Had Professor Binder this semester, I enjoyed his ART 1100 course and I'm now able to view art with a new perspective. He doesn't take attendance, but you have to go to class to learn the exam material. You also don't need to buy the textbook if you just go to class.
He's passive aggressive but that's just how his personality is. He does an amazing job engaging with his students. He tries his best to make everyone feel included. He views the lectures the day before he uploads the tests. He's very clear on the grading criteria. Attendance is not taken but you do need to be there in order to understand.
Professor Binder clearly loves art, music, and all others things that are alike in that area. His class is simple and an easy A. his test are now online and open note so there isn't a reason not to get an A on them and in the class. He is a cool guy with Great! music taste and will flood you with loads of overview of art and engross you into it.
I had a great experience with this professor. Lectures are discussion-led, so you will be expected to participate, but they push you to think. I would say the textbook isn't needed. There were a few open-note tests and a paper. Sometimes talks fast, but is laid back. This got me interested in art more than before. Overall, I would take him again.
