I personally loved Professor Bird as he seemed to actually care for his students. He took the time to make sure his students understood the assignment or lecture. He always gave great feedback on essays and showed an interest in his students learning. I would 100% recommend Professor Bird as he marks fairly and gives assignments that u can excel in
AMAZING prof! Very funny and laid back but still very respected by students. One of the most helpful profs I've ever had in terms of explaining assignments and offering clarifications on readings, etc. If you're unsure of something go see him and he WILL make sure you leave understanding it. Fantastic, kind, helpful and very intelligent man.
Dr. Bird is a very laid back teacher, with engaging teaching styles. He was very well respected and liked by the students in my class and always had the general interest of those in the class. He is a somewhat tough marker, but is always available for help if you ask. Also, readings and class notes are pretty important in this class
Clear and concise lectures, doesn't beat around the bush, just lets you know what is expected of you. Super hot too. Perfect combination ;)
Best professor at laurier!! extremely helpful and kind. Switched my major to sociology because of him
Professor Bird was very engaging, he always did his best to make everyone comfortable and greatly succeeded in getting people to participate in class discussions. While I did find that his marking was harder than other profs, it also was a writing course designed to help soc students, and I felt that everyone's writing vastly improved with his help
Greg has been an amazing teacher and very supportive with my illness of pnemonia this term, Alongside his incredible TA this experience has been amazing and his teaching style is fantastic. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an intelligent, well spoken teacher who's hilarious and knowledgeable!
Dr. Bird is an amazing prof, he cares about his students and does his best to help you do well!
Greg is an awesome prof. He's super appropriable and considerate. He cares for his students and is very engaging. Wish I could take more of his classes (if only I'm not graduating this year). If you have any issues, go talk to him. He'll understand :)
Greg's an unreal prof-- super personable and will definitely help you if you take the time to talk to him. His lectures are never boring, and he's got an unreal personality!
pretty much as good of a prof as you will ever get. very knowledgeable, is able to explain complex theory in a digestible manner and is very passionate about what he teaches . attending class is key, a tough but fair marker who will help you in any way he can.
Dr. Bird, hands down was one of the best professors I had during my undergraduate career. This is a very late rating, but better late than never. I had him for a fourth year seminar and I walked out inspired and an even more critical thinker. I worked my butt off for that class, but it was all worth. Didn't feel like 'work.' Totally recommend him!
Would highly recommend any of his classes. He cares for the students and their success. He motivated me to want to to better. His class was useful for any other university class - starts at basis and works up. Very inspirational and gives good feedback.
Dr. Bird was an amazing professor. He was interactive, clear, and had interesting lectures every time. He also understood the needs of his students. His assignments seem tough but he makes sure you know exactly what you are doing and is always there for help. Overall a great prof!
Greg Bird was such an amazing professor. His lectures were very detailed. You have to work for your grade, not a 'bird' course. Class attendance and participation are mandatory but this makes for a better experience. I have recently graduated and still think of how great Greg was. TAKE HIS COURSE! You will not regret it.
Greg is probably one of the best professors at Laurier. I've taken three of his classes so far and I'm looking to take a fourth. The content can sometimes be dry but he's truly passionate about what he teaches which makes going to class enjoyable. He provides clear grading criteria so you know exactly what he wants and it's not hard to get an A.
Just a great prof overall. Clearly understands what he is talking about and makes the concepts clear and easy for the the students to understand. Very nice and interactive with the class.
Greg Bird is the best prof. He is funny and is the reason why i am going to major into sociology. He is fun, and clear and keeps his lectures entertaining. Cant wait to take another class with him
He is an amazing prof, I would highly recommend taking any class of his, he makes content fun and easy to learn
loved him as a prof he broke down the course every easily and was extremely clear on what he wanted to see for the exam!
Fill in the blank lecture slides posted - must attend. Also does random in class assignments (10) that are marked! 3 tests no midterm. He talks REALLY fast but is funny. Decent at best.
Greg Bird is the reason I switched into sociology. He's super passionate and loves what he's teaching. He gets excited when students do well and he's really interested in engaging students and making a better learning environment. You do have to study a fair amount but he makes it interesting and if you listen its easy to pick up. 12/10 great class
great guy and prof
Greg is an awesome professor who made the transition into my first year smooth. He listens to students' needs and is a relatable guy who is there to help! His tests were easy but the effort (coming to class, doing readings) is a must not only for a good mark, but to get something out of this course. Thanks Greg for a great semester!
Talks too off textbook compared to other teachers of the same course. Makes his students work twice as hard as other profs for the same equivalent marks. Funny and nice guy though.
Greg Bird is one of the most intelligent and interesting people I've ever met. He's a fair prof in the sense that if you do your readings and attend lectures you're guaranteed a good mark. Gives you writing assignments on random days that accumulate to 10% of your mark so go to class regularly and you'll get perfect on it.
Dr. Bird was an amazing prof, he's hilarious, and really engages his students. Hes also pretty easy on the eyes, would 100% take another course if he was teaching it.
Greg is by far the best professor that I've had this year. I hope I get to have him again. His lectures are fun and engaging and he is so relatable and generally just a nice guy. If you can make HIS class work in your schedule - do it!!!
Best Sociology Prof at Laurier Hands Down.
Best prof I've had so far at Laurier! He makes coming to class enjoyable and the course work is not too hard or much at all! I would definitely take more classes with him!
Hands down the best prof I had first year, he is really passionate about what he teaches and he makes his lectures entertaining and acknowledges that some topics can be a little dry and boring, but he does his best to make it as interesting as he can. He is also very clear on what he expects on tests/papers.
Hilarious, understanding, personable, and passionate about what he teaches. Greg Bird is the best prof I've ever had.
Dr. Bird is very educated in his subject. However, his leftist approach to certain matters can be tiring. The textbook is absolutely useless in finding the information you need in relation to his slides, which wouldn't be a problem if he didn't leave important words blanked out on his slides when you're trying to study. Overall he is a v nice guy.
Probably my favourite prof in my first year. He is really approachable and does his best to add his own twist on course work. Attendance is pretty important because he leaves blank spaces on his online slides. His tests are pretty easy though as he often includes obviously wrong/joke answers in multiple choice questions.
Greg Bird is by far the best professor I've had during my first year. Very excited to have him again next semester for SY 103. Highly recommend!!
blessed buy and good prof
Greg is an alright prof. His teaching style is fairly nonchalant yet is able to keep you interested throughout lecture. He is also fairly straightforward in explaining concepts and often reiterates them to help you remember. While Greg isn't the most "inspirational" prof, he cares about his students, and the course load is rather very manageable.
Bird has a lovely personality; it's easy to ask him questions and get an understandable answer. His lectures are not hard to follow along to, and he often ends class early. Tests are fair and you will do well if you read the textbook and go over his lecture notes. Attend his classes as he likes to give out random in-class, end of lecture questions.
Greg is a great professor, he finds ways to make lectures interesting or funny even when the content is quite heavy at times. Prepares the class well for midterms and shares adequate study resources and strategies. Textbook is definitely necessary. Really enjoyed his teaching in both SY101 and SY103
Funny and approachable. Most of the tests are based on his lecture information with only some extra information needed from the textbook. Passionate about what he is teaching. Favourite prof in first year by far!
Hes very laid back and has very interesting lectures
One of my favorite professors! Posts slides, talks about relevant examples and really prepares you for the test. Greg Bird is fantastic!
took sy101 solely as an elective and he was what made sociology my favourite class this semester ! wasn't planning on taking sy102 but decided to take it only because he was teaching it. he teaches in a way that makes the lecture interesting. studying doesn't seem like studying because he is so clear and straight to the point in lectures! thank u!
Greg Bird has been my favourite prof this semester here at Laurier, he is passionate about what he lectures, cares genuiley about his students and overall a great guy to talk too!! If you have the opportunity to take his classes, DO IT!!!
I loved every single lecture Bird did! He's easily my favorite prof this semester. Every single lecture was easy to listen to and you can tell that he loves his job and knows what he's talking about. I'm so happy I majored in sociology and hope I have more classes with him in the future!
Best lectures. The structure is perfect and goes well with the textbook content.
His lectures are very engaging and I was never bored. You do have to go to class though because without the lecture, his slides make very little sense. He is also super nice and accessible outside of class, always responding to emails and offering office hours.
One of the best profs I've ever had. I usually don't write reviews but this guy deserves it. He leaves blanks in slides so you have to go to class but the lectures are super easy and fun. Super easy to talk to and honestly the best prof.
Bird gives very engaging and interesting lectures. His quizzes are fair and he's extremely welcoming to help you do well on them. Also the best zoom classes
Professor Bird is a really great prof. His lectures are very straightforward and engaging. SY101 and SY103 have 3 midterms and an exam, so there is a lot of studying. He tests on things in the textbook that he doesn't teach in class, so be prepared to do some reading. But it is really worth it because he is a great prof and all around a great guy.
Really nice, smart guy. Interesting lectures. Overall sociology is a really underrated subject.
Best prof I have had so far.
I usually don't rate profs, but Dr. Bird was an absolute godsend. He loves interacting with students and he's pretty cool all in all. Always do your readings! A lot of his questions come from the textbook material. He's got blanks in the slides too so make sure you show up to class. We had 2 (really easy) tests and 7 in-class writing assignments.
Really great prof! Was very accommodating to students amid the covid-19 pandemic, you have to go to lectures because there are blanks in the slides but he makes lectures very interesting! tests are very fair!
Great prof. Best one I've ever had.
Dr. Bird is probably one of the best professors you will ever have. He cares about his students. He makes his lectures interesting. He was very understanding, having to do school during a pandemic is really tough and he was very considerate, unlike all my other profs. 100% recommend taking his class. Would take one of his classes again just for him
So nice! Easy to talk to and cares for his student's success. He has 100% of my respect. I enjoy going to his lectures because he actually gives up breaks (which is so helpful) and communicates with us.
Dr. Bird cares so much about his students, especially during the pandemic, he made it his goal to look out for his students' well-being. He is easily accessible after class and although you definitely need to do work in order to do well, his tests are fair and he is very lenient and understanding with his evaluations. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
My most caring prof during this pandemic. he actually checked up on how we were doing during lectures and truly cared about our mental health. tests are difficult and u need to study a lot to do well, but he was understanding and took our comments into concern. Also cancelled our final exams bc we were under so much stress. highly recommend!!!!
Dr. Bird is an absolute gem. During the pandemic he is one of the few professors who actually took the time to ask for feedback. He removed the final exam and replaced it with optional assignments to make it less stressful. The course only consisted of two tests worth 30% each, but they're simple and you'll do well if you study. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Very nice prof. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed unlike other profs in this school.
Love him, he cares, tries to make it easier in students if he sees they're stressed. Great lectures, makes them entertaining, content is easily learnt.
Dr. Bird is hands down one of the best profs I have ever had. His class was engaging and interesting. He is a fair grader. Dr. Bird actually cares about his students and their well-being. Would 100% recommend his class.
Great Prof... actually cares about how his students are doing. A real gem
Dr. Bird genuinely cares for his students and he shows it. He tries so hard to make his classes enjoyable which I appreciate so much, he is also super accommodating, and has very clear criteria when it comes to assignments. Dr. Bird is definitely one of the best profs the sociology department has to offer, definitely take a course with him again!
A very compassionate person and engaging lecturer.
Greg Bird is by far one of my favourite Professors at Laurier. He is compassionate to students' needs, is caring and understanding when you need extra help, extensions (when required) and is a fantastic lecturer. Not only is he hilarious and tries to relate to student culture, but also shares amazing stories that are fascinating. 10/10 Professor!!!
Note taking is important and would not recommend if it's to heavily boost your GPA since tests are actually moderately hard (class was a C- avg). Lectures were interesting though, and voice recordings were posted if you missed them. Wouldn't recommend that though since I would never end up listening to them.
Greg Bird is amazing, I absolutely loved him. He is so understanding and cares about his students. His tests are hard and difficult so I recommend you read the textbook and have all lecture notes completed. All tests are worth 20% of your grade. I cannot stress enough how important both the textbook and lecture slides are. Overall recommend him!
Greg Bird is a fantastic professor. Lectures are clear and easy to follow, even if you can't make it to a lecture he provides recordings. 3 tests for the entirety of the course and a very managable exam. 10/10 cannot speak more highly of this class and him.
He's an amazing guy. Loved his lectures! The entire course is based on a few tests and the final, so no assignments. All you gotta do is pay attention in the lectures and read the book afterwards and you'll be good throughout the course. Exams are fairly easy if you remember the content.
great lectures, funny, super intelligent in his field and makes his class fun and engaging.
Greg is a good professor but a bit overhyped in my opinion. Lectures can sometimes put me to sleep but they're for the most part okay, he's a great person who cares about his students though. Tests are fairly straightforward though and with a bit of studying you should be okay.
genuinely such a caring professor makes the class enjoyable and easy especially for first-year students who are still adjusting to change. 10/10 recommend him
By far my favourite prof here at Laurier and made learning engaging and fun! Tests are slightly challenging and exam is fairly easy as long as you study the slides provided. Overall really enjoyed this class thanks to Birdy!
Dr. Bird was an amazing professor, very knowledgeable and nice. super easy to ask questions to and also has a humour. if i could have him as my professor for every class i would
The best professor at Laurier by far!! His lectures are super engaging and it feels like more of a discussion. Graded from 3 online tests and a final exam, if you follow his lectures you will do just fine! If I could have him for every class I would. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed!
Greg Bird is my favourite prof I had first year. So funny, hes caring and very straightforward with his expectations.
He constantly references age groups like gen z when he refers to us. He seems to really like to be the professor everyone likes vs providing a clear logical lecture. He needs bifocals, so many pauses for seeing things. I feel like I just want the content to be more than he gave us. Way more organized too would have helped us.
Boring lectures. Be prepared to read the whole textbook he teaches one thing from the whole chapter. Midterms are 40 questions, but only makes them out of 20 so each question is only worth 0.5 of a mark
Disappointing. Disappointing.
Provided us a textbook that was $160(not including tax) and wasn't aware of this, when he WAS made aware he made little effort to help students find alternatives, asking if we were all friends so we could help each other out. The outline for his tests also lack any actual relevance to the test itself making up for maybe only a quarter of it
There are 3 tests in total and at the end of random lectures he'll ask for a written response to a random question. There are very little opportunities to make up your grade if you flunk. The online slides are sloppily made and lack direction when honestly all the testing comes from the textbook. For your own good, honestly avoid it.
Dr. Bird is one of my favourite professors. He is understanding and provides students will tools to be successful in the course. 3 Tests, final exam, and simple in class writing exercises. Content comes from lectures and textbook. A lot of textbook materials in the tests. Overall, easy and straightforward class if you finish the readings.
having Bird as a prof was the absolute best. He's great with giving cheat sheets, hints, and help for all the tests and gives great lectures with all the information you need to pass. He does do in person writing assignments so attendance is pretty mandatory.10/10 would recommend.
It's true (from all the other comments) that there's a lot of textbook content, but all you really need to look at is the glossary for definitions rather than read every paragraph. Tests and exam were very straightforward, he revealed the pool of short answer topics for the exam which was majority of it. Pretty generous and cool prof!
Dr. Bird's lectures were very boring. but the information isn't hard to understand. He makes his tests not very fair and asks things that he said wouldn't be on the test. I will say that he is amazing with the exam and gives you everything that will be on it.
His lectures hare hilarious and he has a very sarcastic sense of humour. Gives randomly assigned in class writing exercises so attendance is very important. Tests are very easy just on terms and to quote "Nothing you can't find in the glossary of your textbook"
Dr. Bird is a phenomenal instructor. Readings are carefully selected and used to deepen understanding of the topics. Dr. Bird is able and willing to explain complex topics and ideas with tact and respect, while challenging students to make connections with other course material and learnings. Assignments were marked fair.
Incredibly clear lectures, Dr. Bird is well versed in a wide range of sociological theory and does an excellent job at breaking down complex ideas. He presented to four foundational schools of sociological thought in great detail, outlining their historical relevance as well as contemporary trends that have continued to advance the main ideas.
I had Dr.Bird and I will say he's a good prof. He likes to act tough but if you're open and honest he is accommodating and caring. I had him for an upper year course, which actually made it easier in comparison to the intro courses. We had to read a lot, but he helped us and took time to make sure we understood everything.
Dr. Bird is one of the best professors I have ever had! His ability to simplify complex subjects and his humour make his classes enjoyable. Exams are straightforward if you follow lectures and the textbook. His dedication and patience sets him apart. I learned a lot about sociology and Indigenous history from him. Highly recommend SY101 and SY103!
I took intro to soc with him and I was scared due to the reviews but honestly, it was pretty good! As long as you read the textbook, it's easy! almost everything from the tests were in the textbook or his lectures so as long as you take time to read and study it's easy. He's also pretty accommodating and helped us if we needed to postpone tests!
I was amazed at the compelling syllabus offered by Dr. Bird for a difficult course like Theorizing Decolonization. I highly suggest Dr. Bird if you are ready to push your understanding in an inclusive and friendly environment.
I highly suggest Dr. Bird if you are looking to push your understanding in a friendly and inclusive environment.
I had this teacher for a series of Grad courses that are not showing on this site, but he is a good teacher who prioritized student engagement, very community-oriented. Good lectures, fun class participation, flexible with syllabi. Lives his decolonial truth, and works hard to make learning fun and success easy, even if students don't do the work.
Amazing! Textbook and attending lectures was definitely mandatory, just make sure to keep up with readings and you'll do better than pass. Final exam was super easy and he gives the testable material before so you know exactly what to study.
One of the best profs at the university. SY 101 was an amazing course, and Dr. Bird is a clear, inspiring and topical lecturer. Switched my major to soc after taking this class. Learned lots and was always engaged, even in the big class size. Highly recommend the course, and taking as many taught by Dr. Bird as possible.
Dr. Bird was an inspirational professor. His lectures were engaging and his slides were well thought out. He is the best prof ever.
- REVIEW OF CQ 640 AND CQ 618 - Dr. Bird is an amazing prof. Very understanding about extensions etc. as long as you do the work. Lots of reading and writing (which was not easy) helped me improve A LOT as a researcher. No judgment for not knowing someone/something (I came from an unrelated BA discipline) and lots of encouragement for learning.
Dr. Bird was truly one of my favourite profs I've ever had. You can tell that he truly cares about the success of his students as he is always willing to help you out if you're struggling. His teaching style is very engaging and his tests are very straight forward. I can't wait to take one of his classes again!
Dr. Bird was the best ever! He cares about every students and always there if you need help. This professor is prepared with his slides. His lectures are amazing and you learn so much. He is inspiring and very chill.
Bird is absolutely amazing! The first time he taught me, he reminded me of why I chose Sociology and reignited my love for it. He is very flexible, and allows the students to take some ownership over the type of work we do! Plus, he is super funny and engaging - I made sure to sit at the front of every class.
Dr Bird is super supportive of students and is engaging during his class. His lectures are well organised, posted way in advance and he is super animated during my class. He is a very positive professor who wants everyone to get good marks. Cap
I had Dr. Bird for one of the hardest grad level courses I've ever taken; and I walked away from this class feeling so confident in my ability to speak in a theoretical manner! This course is a reading course, so be ready to do the work for weekly assignments. Feedback was amazing and helped me become a far better writer!
Although his lecture was 2 hours long (and at night) he made it very enjoyable for students. He was very engaging and made the class entertaining. He gives both midterms and the exams a week before so you know exactly what is on it. I would recommend if you are actually interested in sociology.
never went for is classes and ended up with an A+. a good elective if you enjoy writing!
Bird had long boring lectures but his exams were easy but you needed to make up your own definitions because lecture/textbook ones would lose you marks. He lost my first exam making exam 2 50% of my grade and then messed up my tutorial grade so I lost 2/3 of the points. I didn't have a TA for half my semester causing a hard time knowing grades.
At first, I was skeptical when he kept starting class by speaking broken Portuguese, but he turned out to be a caring and straightforward professor. He posted all the tests and exam questions a week in advance. W prof.
I wasn't a fan of getting our second big test a week before the exam but other than that, it was quite enjoyable. It was exactly the course load you would expect for an introductory course and very little studying was needed to get an A because he gave out the tests and exams early. The lectures weren't extraordinary, but nowhere near bad.
Professor Bird is a great lecturer, he really knows his stuff which makes the lectures great, and gives very fair tests. This is the first time he ran the course with short answer tests, but I really liked it. He gives you the test questions a week in advance, so if you study, you're guaranteed a good mark. He responds quickly for emails.
it really doesn't get any easier than Sociology 101. Doctor Bird made great efforts to ensure students were heard and heavily valued feedback. He comes off a bit odd sometimes but you can tell he really knows his stuff.
Liked the questions for exam before hand which helped. Evening class was challenging and the classroom was dated. Prof was set in their ways and it showed up in his lecture. Not comfortable with him.
Definitely one of my favourite professors this semester. He gives very clear outlines in preparation for midterms and exams, making it pretty easy to get good grades. He also doesn't give a lot of work and seems to really know what he is talking about during lectures making it easy to understand sociology content.
cool guy, good lectures; he makes sure that everyone understand the concepts covered, made the 2.5 hours very worth it and somewhat enjoyable
>Cancels first lecture cause sick and shows up to second lecture sick af >goes on a rant about Trump every 20 minutes in lecture >brings up fascism like 10 times when its clearly material we are meant to talk about later in the term >"Oh yeah colonialism n stuff anyone know the name of this random Chicago university prof" I like this guy
Dr. Bird's classes are engaging, with clear lectures and a fair grading system. Stay on top of the textbook readings and you'll do well. I found Unstuck ai helpful for exam prep alongside the class materials.
Dr. Bird was my fav prof in this semester. Tests/midterms were very straightforward where he literally told us exactly what was on them, so if you put in the effort, you'll do really well. The course content is really easy to understand and he's open to answering questions. Overall, a great prof !!!
Dr. Bird is amazing! Loved attending lectures, as he is very passionate about what he is teaching. Format is very straightforward... 25% for tutorials, 25% for midterm 1, 25% for midterm 2 and 25% for the final exam. As long as you make time to study in advance for midterms and final, this is an easy A class. Would love to have him as a prof again!
Great prof
Dr. Bird is real nice and his class in fall 2023 and winter 2024 was simple and easy. He gave us cheat sheet and there was no tutorials but I believe there are tutorials now. His tests are Straight forward and so is the final. Take his class in first year if you're able to.
I had this class in my first semester, and Greg is awesome. Lectures were engaging, he's funny, caring, and overall everything you want in a prof. Clear what you need to study and do to succeed in his class, which had lab component, but they were very fair. One of my favourite professors I've had so far.
I no longer have classes with him, but I think about those lectures all the time. He was down-to-earth and clearly passionate about sociology which made the content easy to receive. He is really straightforward with what was expected- as long as you're attentive and do the work- you'll do great!
Great prof. Lots of in class assignments which encouraged attendance. Course was very test heavy (3 tests totaling 90% of final grade). I enjoyed the content within the course however the tests were sometimes challenging.
He is a great prof, but a very tough grader. With basically no opportunities for extra credit (only 1 percent), he does not give back marks, even on questions that over 50 percent of the class got wrong. I really wish he were kinder with grading, but other than that, he clearly loves what he does, and he is a kind prof. (also very funny)
greg bird da goat
Mr Bird was the greatest teacher in my first year. He was very engaging in his classes and would highly recommend to anyone. Truly cares about the success of his students
He was very nice and I think he taught the course well. I just found everything we learnt kinda boring and when he would give reviews for the tests it would only review the short anise part the multiple choice was always bad.
Dr. Bird as a professor is great, the course content was taught great however I found it hard staying engaged at times. 90% of your grade is 2 midterms and a final exam with 10% being random in-class writing exercises he does at end of lectures.. so make sure to attend lectures. If youre looking to build on high school sociology its a good course
rlly chill professor. literally told you what to study for midterms and exam. need to see more professors like him.
He really cares about his content and students, it was really easy to learn in his class without constantly stidying and struggling to keep up
Greg Bird is perfect. He always gave clear expectations before hand for tests and made it really easy to succeed. Its clear he cares about students .
Amazing prof, cares about his students, gives clear test outlines, makes content easy to understand.
Greg Bird is an amazing professor and easily one of my favourite courses so far. He genuinely cares about his students, is really funny, and keeps lectures engaging. The course has two midterms, a final exam, and in class writing assignments. He is very clear about what will be on tests, which is super helpful.
