He is a soft spoken teacher with stict rules in the classroom. There is a lot of reading and the midterm & final are essay question form. He is an educated man, who has high expectations for his students. If you dont like to read alot then dont take him!!

Teacher is nice guy, but very boring. A lot of discussions in classroom (sometimes interesting). The only thing u have to do is READ... A LOT!!, It is Difficult!! and there is a Midterm & Final (ESSAY Questions), and One research paper (5-10 pages long).

He is a soft speaker, it lulled me to sleep. Seems strict, but really isnt. Participate and you'll get an A. If your class is going slow, he'll go slow and adjust the tests thusly. Go to his office before tests/essay, he'll give you all the answers.

Great teacher, will not let you slack off but keeps class fun. Open minded and very smart. A lot of writing, but it's a writing class. Very helpful and will help you write your paper during office hours. I loved this class, fairly structured with some group stuff, some powerpoint and some lecture.

Pretty cool guy. Gets a little boring sometimes. Your whole grade is based on the midterm, final, and term paper. So do good on those and you'll be fine. Pretty chill class. Fairly easy grader.

prof cavin has got to be the most boring teacher i have ever had. he makes you fall asleep five minutes into class. if you hate philosophy going in.. you'll end up hating it even more when you come out. grading is also moderately difficult since the class is only based on midterm, paper, & final

This guy is boring but he's easy on grading. I got an A. Philosophy is confusing but to do well on the midterm and final, you have to read and understand the theories. Dr. Cavin gives the questions before the midterm and final. So, don't be lazy. If you've read, they aren't hard. Listen to the lecture.

the first day he tries to come off like hes going to hold you accountable. he doesnt. hes very understanding, a very easy grader, and he teaches unbiasedly. he writes the notes on the board not FOR you but with you and thats his only downfall to me. his notes are crazy. the only way you can copy them is if you turn your paper sideways. he offers extra credit. he is a very intelligent and caring guy. i have taken 2 of his classes and will take another for fun.

On the first day of class, he came off as the most boring guy in the world, but I assure you, he's awesome. I love this professor!! He really helps you understand the material and is always willing to slow down if you don't understand something. He makes the material interesting and I would definitely take him again

Dr. Cavin is an excellent professor. He lectures on the subject until you understand the material. He grades based on mid-term exam, final exam and one term paper. Exams are essay form, but you will be given the questions in advance so that you can prepare. Dr. Cavin has great passion for the subject and will make you want to know more.

Professor Cavin is one of those rare teachers who loves to teach what he knows. Don't miss one class, because chances are you'll hear something informative and though-provoking each class. He likes those that voice their opinion, but he won't hesitate to own you with logic if you're an idiot.

Professor Cavin's class on the philosophy of religion was very life-changing for me at the time. Every day of class I experienced an utmost degree of pleasure learning all the arguments for and against the existence of God clearly orated by the subject's best teacher. The class was fun. Exciting. Titillating.

Dr. Cavin is great professor. He is easy,willing to help students,and passionate on his subjests. he is the one who love to teach and willing to give you all his knowlege; I learned a lot new perceptioins and concepts form his lectures. Anyone who wanted to learn and improve your knowledge, should take him. midterm is based on his lectures.

I passed the class with an A without the book. There were two written exams and a term paper. The exam questions are given before the test day so you can pretty much prepare your answers. Most questions are based on notes. Anyways, overall he is boring but the class is not so bad.

BORING. 1 hour of class feels like 10. He is helpful during his office hours but the way he teaches is very boring and makes ethics boring. He has a biased opinion that shows up periodically during his lectures. He seems too pompus and uses words his students DONT understand. 1 term paper, 2 exams...difficult class. oh and no hw. Has favorites too.

This class is what I expected college to be like. Lots of reading but few assignments. Lectures are exactly what you need for the test and he gets the class involved. Always gives help if you need it, and doesn't make people feel stupid. Good Professor

A very helpfull professor, when steping in to his class you find your self a bit lost for the first couple of weeks then everything just starts falling into place. Just remember to take alot of GOOD notes because his midterm and final is open book and open notes.

Cavin can be arrogant, but at least he admits it.He gets mad when the class doesn't read or participate.Very helpful during office hours and a fair grader.He will go over the midterm and final info so you know what he expect.He's cool and even if he's balding, he's hot. Also, he blushes easily, which is adorable. His wife is a very lucky lady!

Great teacher! I loved his class and would gladly take any and every other class he offered. Lectures were extremely interesting. Easy A - just take notes and pay attention. He is always willing to help. Your grade is determined by - midterm, essay, and a final. All are open notes. Many interesting stories and examples. Great class!

Awesome professor. read the book before class and it will help a lot! Be sure to join and even start discussions in class! Way before the midterm and final show him answers for the tests and he will go over them and tell you what to change. Write something you are passionate about for the term paper and you will do well. Great class, very informative.

The greatest teacher I have had so far in college! This is my second year and I have never had a more dedicated professor that cared so much about helping students. He made class enjoyable and was crystal clear about his expectations. He is more than willing to help students and makes that clear many times. All i have to say is GREAT TEACHER!

ummmm can we say best teacher ever!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this class. I didn't think I would be into it but this class is seriously amazing. He is so clear about all the topics even the really abstract ideas, he somehow manages to come up with a real life example. Even though I am a finance major, this makes me want to get into Philosophy!

i suggest you don't take it if you're really sensitive and conservative. he has a strange sense of humor and ratedXmovie.really strict about attendance;if you can write class is easy, but if you cant, have fun studying 11 Q's you write 2.overall he's good and loves philosophy , but i woulda rather taken the easy phil. teacher who does nothing!

At first i thought the class was hard and I was just not intereseted in the class. Then we took our first exam and I totally thought that I was going to do bad. However, I got a B to my surprise!! You don't have to really read, take a lot of notes, he allows notes and books for the exams. Also a couple of days before exams he will answer the exam ?

Dr. Cavin is such an amazing professor; one of the best i have ever had. He has a great sense of humor. The class is easy- there is one mideterm, a termpaper, and a final. the midterm and final are open book, notes, and lecture notes. You will learn alot in his class, and this class is NOT Boring! He is awesome just take him!

If you don't show up to class and miss his notes, then you'll for sure be missing out on answers to the midterm or final. Grades you on midterm, term paper, and final. Study way before each test. Putting down your opinion on topics at the end of essays will increase your chance of a better grade. Material is just hard.

I would not recommend this teacher. He REQUIRED you to print out all of his power point presentations...OVER 300 pages. And he was very vague in all of his explanations. If you ask a question he just goes back to his slide and reiterates what is on it over and over again. Just Awful.

For that one negative comment, he doesn't REQUIRE you to print it out with your own money, he let you print using HIS printer, for no charge, but they wouldn't allow him to anymore. He is VERY clear and an AMAZING teacher. I loved Ethics cuz of him. Don't listen to any negativity. If you are a phil major, I wasn't, take him! He's all around awesome

cavin is ok. on the 1st day we went straight to lectures & he does all his lectures through power point. but he tries to make them fun by adding cute pictures. he is there when you need him & he only has 3 assignments for the whole class: mid term, term paper, & final. he is a pretty lenient teacher, but overall PHIL 160 is just toooo boring!

Very intelligent. Makes his lessons entertaining and appealing. Greatly appreciates student participation in discussions, so silent students should consider a different professor. Take good notes, because tests are open book/notes. Has clear student favorites based on insightful participation.

professor cavin is a brilliant man,he uses a lot of logic in his lectures. he's probably one of the smartest instructors i have ever had. all you need to get an A is listen to what he says in class, dont even take notes, for final/midterm, study power points, and for term paper, just write it using his power points, be opiononated!

Only two tests and a paper so you have to do good on everything. The class itself is pretty boring because he just lectures but it can get confusing. He put a lot of time into his PP to make the material make sense to the students. He gives you the test prompt before hand so just put in the effort and you'll be fine. Pretty easy class, easy grader

One of the most fair teachers around, he gives you a chance to re-do all assignments after telling you the answers. If you're confused, come by on his office hours, he'll gladly walk you through all problems and let you hand in the same paper he helped you with for full credit. He's very friendly; his cynical humor makes him easy to relate to.

Take the summer class... You'll get to watch lots of movies! Be on time. Pay attention. Don't miss class. Do the homework. Do all those things and you will get an A. Final is take home! Subject is not hard if you pay attention to his lectures. By the end of the class you will become a Kubrick fan for sure!

Cavin really knows his philosophy and he teaches it well too. The course seems intimidating at first because there's only a midterm, term paper, and final, but he is a fairly lenient grader. You can tell he's passionate about teaching because he could probably be doing much more with his knowledge.

I love philosophical thoughts and ideas, so I thought this class would be awesome. But it wasn't. It was extremely specific on every single subject, which I didn't enjoy because I like thinking abstractly about these types of subjects. It was almost felt like a science class more than a humanities class. Professor Cavin is a nice guy, but boring

I've taken him for several classes and he's a really great teacher. Usually he only requires 2 tests and a term paper. Tests are often take-home. He's definitely better if you're a philosophy major though. He is VERY detailed and goes way in depth. He's overall not too hard though. Highly recommend.

Cavin is a great Professor, he knows the subject very well and makes everything easy to understand. I recommended him for anyone. Just read his power points and the book and you'll do fine. Oh and try not to talk in his class unless you are asking a question he gets very mad at those who talk and make them lecture.

Great teacher. He teaches it like a college course as opposed to a high school class. He doesn't assign busy work. He posts his powerpoints which are incredibly helpful. His class can be slightly aggravating do to the everchanging arguments, however that is the nature of the subject. Take this professor if you're ready to really think.

Chill but intimidating at first. No hw. Midterm and final is easy, js work off his powerpoints. Follow prompt guidelines for the paper. Come to class to get the material because its unmotivating otherwise. Okay class, but i hated the style. Its mostly lecture. Dont recommend, but would take if options are limited.

Awesome instructor! The class is a little demanding but so much fun! Cavin's powerpoints are fantastic, he goes through a lot of trouble to simplify the material for his students. No HW, just a midterm + final and term paper. As long as you read the material and show up for class, it's a definite A and you learn something too!

I really enjoyed this class more than expected since I always felt daunt when I came to class. The reading can be a bit much but with the help of his powerpoints, you'll get a better understanding. Overall, he is nice & very willing to help and encourages that you do ask for help!

The class is very intimidating at the beginning since your grades are determined by 2 test and a term paper. Dr. Cavin is a very passionate to his craft and will go out of his way to help you. The reading is quite heavy for some who do not like reading. What I liked about him the most is that he is fair and will not force his personal views on you.

This class was one of my toughest classes. If you are not good at writing essays then DO NOT take this class. There are 2 exams the midterm and final plus a 5 page paper. If you DO NOT do good on the paper then your grade will suffer.If your a philosophy major take this class if not pick a different professor.

I took Cavin for Intro to Ethics. He is by far my favorite professor at Cyress. He is smart, funny, and really knows how to teach. I strongly recommend him for anyone who wants to learn philosophy

His class was the most rewarding I have ever had in my life. Not an easy A, but worth every bit of struggle. Don't take it if you don't want to work REALLY hard, participate in discussion every day, or pay complete attention. Cavin pushes people hard, but only because he truly wants them to succeed.

Very good class with alot of learning involved. Great prof who is interested in his class and students. He wants them to succeed and critically think as well. Class is based on midterm, final, and term paper so not alot of room for error. Show up and listen to the powerpoints and study hard and you will pass the class and feel good doing so.

He is an awesome professor! His exams are clear and precise and it's not easy if you go to class every day. He allows you to use your notes that you took DURING class and the book during his midterm/final so it's super easy.All I literally did was go to class take notes and I got a solid A in both his Intro to philosophy AND philosophy of religion

Dr. Cavin is a remarkable professor. He teaches with great passion and loves his subject. Attendance is mandatory if you want to do well in his class. The subject can be difficult at times. Overall, he is a very FAIR grader - midterm - critical thinking essay (5 pages) - final. Midterm and final are essay format.

Loved this class!! Cavin is a wonderful professor who loves what he teaches. As long as you put in the effort you can pass this class! Only 3 assignments no homework, but make sure to review material. A fun class with interesting material. No need to buy book. Take this class!!!!

Amazing professor. He tries his best to get his students to participate in class. Show up to class and take good notes, and you will do well. He is very helpful and is always in his office hours to answer any questions. He inspired me to pursue a career in teaching philosophy. He is very sweet and funny which shows in his lectures. Yes, sometimes the material is unclear but he tries his best to make sure the class understands, and succeeds. He is really nice and is always available for questions during office hours. Class goes at a good pace. His power-points are cool and entertaining and easy to follow. I definitely recommend taking this professor!

I really enjoyed this class. You do not have to be a philosophy major to enjoy this class. Cavin engages all of his students. Don't be lazy. Show up to class, and ask questions. Show that you are trying, and he will respond to that. He is very nice, and easy going, but do not piss him off. He is extremely intelligent, and very funny.

I love him! he was one of the first teachers I had at cypress and I know I'll never forget him. His class really makes you think. He's always available through e-mail or office hours. There is only a midterm and an exam with no homework other than to read the textbook (he doesn't check) As long as you follow along..easy A!

The class is interesting, but NOT ENGAGING AT ALL. Sure he may be a very informative teacher and his power points may be somewhat humors and helpful, but to be honest, I HAVE NOT REALLY LEARNED ANYTHING. The class has a midterm, a term paper, and a final. I aced the midterm, but have not learned a thing. This class is mainly rote memorization. BLEH

Doctor Cavin is a good professor, he wants his students to succeed and its always available to help you out. Sure the class is easy but only if you put your effort, time and think. Two exams. One paper that you can resubmit to turnitin until you get a low score. Easy class. Little effort. Prep work necessary for at least an average grade in the exams. Boring class; nodded off a lot because the classroom was cold. Slides provided on mygateway. Informative. Has enthusiasm for subject. Don't take. Lots of ppl drop eventually.

Easy A. As long as you take notes you will get an A on the midterm and final because everything is literally there. If you use tabs on the essays in the textbook the test is easier because you can use it for reference during both exams. Everything is explained throughly. There is no homework and one additional essay, also open notes and book. Loved

He is a great teacher! Extremely helpful and very nice! Make sure to always attend every class because he goes over a lot of work each day and be there on time! I always looked forward to going to class and i had him at 7:30 am! He is amazing :)

Easy class/easy grader. Grades are based on Attendance, 1 midterm and 1 final. Pay attention in class, take notes and the class is a breeze. Open notes and open book. EASY A.

Easiest class I have ever taken. We had a midterm, a term paper, and a final which were open book. Only issue about this class is the professor. Worst professor I have ever had, he actually takes role and shows little respect to his students. He thinks philosophy is more important than science...

Pay attention during the lectures because the only way you'll pass this class is by knowing the material well. He likes it when students engage in discussions about the topic or debate on something. He's an excellent instructor who encourages his students to participate in class. Take him!

Dr. Cavin is an amazing professor. There was a midterm, a term paper, and a final. Just show up and contribute to the discussion. He is a brilliant man, his lectures are interesting, and he makes really cool Powerpoints. He makes himself very available to help and encourages students to visit him during office hours.

His tests are all essay questions but he helps you prepare. The only homework he assigns is to read but he has you do a few big papers. Philosophy is a difficult subject but I feel that he did a great job getting me interested and helping me understand the material.

He is a very intelligent person and love Philosophy. His class got three major assignments: a midterm, term paper, and a final. He will give reading as homework so i suggest you read them. Plus if you want to do good on the mid term and the final read his Power Point. It will help a lot!!!

BORING. That's all I have to say about it. He wants you to read the section before class because he wants class participation. He'll lecture, and show powerpoints and that's it. All that goes in the gradebook is your midterm, final, a 5 page paper, and attendance. Will ask you to leave if you use electronics or if you're sleeping in class.

Professor Cavin is the reason I fell in love with Philosophy. He is a great professor, he really wants students to understand the material. There is a midterm and a final both are essays. Having the textbook is a must! He also requires that you bring it to class everyday.

He's an amazing professor who gives intellectual lectures. He helps his students understand the readings and offers his office hours to the students that need extra help. Don't be afraid to speak up if you don't understand the lectures, he doesn't judge his students. Best teacher at cypress. I will be taking him again for another philosophy class.

Professor Cavin has to be one of my favorite professors at Cypress! He makes himself available for students who need help and truly does care about them. There are 3 assignments (midterm, paper, and final) that your grade will depend on. The midterm and final are both written but you are allowed to use your notes on them, which is awesome!

Dr. Cavin is the best professor that you will find at Cypress College. He goes above and beyond for his students. You should read the articles, and the power points, if you do that then taking notes will be a piece of cake! Students who are not willing to read, write, and participate should not take this class. It is a rewarding class if you work!

The class was interesting. The teacher was very interested in his subject so it draws you in, plus he's more than willing to help you. Tests are easy as long as you've prepared yourself. Show up for class, firstly because otherwise you won't know what's going on and secondly because he will drop you. Enjoyable overall.

He is a great teacher! But wow this class is super hard for an intro class!! If you don't study for this class, YOU WILL NOT PASS! I recommend reading his power points and readings before class or else you will be super lost during lecture. There are SI sessions if you don't have class for extra help. Go to his office if you are lost.

To be honest, I would not like any other professor for Philosophy except for Cavin! His lectures are intriguing to the point that they go home with you! He is rather difficult in terms of the mid term and final, but you only have 3 assignments for the whole semester(Mid-term, Term paper, and Final). He is very nice and approachable but also strict.

He's a great professor. However, if you are not a philosophy major or interested in philosophy, THIS IS NOT THE CLASS FOR YOU. You also gotta read tons of essays, hard essays. Some you don't understand clearly unless you read it again. This class is tough, some lectures are interesting. I wish i was interested enough to love this class.

Cavin is a great professor. This class is tough if you don't fully understand the readings! I took more time studying for this class than all my other classes! Lectures are pretty boring unless you are a hardcore philosophy fan. A lot of students fall asleep, drink coffee before class.

Don't take him if you hate precise professors. He is very on point with what he wants on the papers. His essay prompts is literally 30+ pages long, and most of it are steps on how he wants the papers look/turned in. His lectures are boring if you don't like philosophy, however he is a good professor.

He is such an amazing professor I took 3 of his phil classes. Understanding phil can be hard but he makes the most difficult topics easy to understand. He will explain everything to you in detail. Ask questions he wants to help. He is available for office hours as well. Midterm and final is 3 possible essay questions and he picks one. Favorite!

I hate philosophy. I don't get it, and probably never will. BUT - professor cavin really makes this class super easy for you. Only 3 major things you need to do for the semester: a midterm, term paper & the final. The midterm & final are open book, and lecture notes. So he's super easy but a tough grader. Doesn't curve grades at the end, but good!

Attendance is a MUST&getting there on time as well. Lectures are long but by the end of them it leaves you wanting more and answers. Midterm, term paper&final exam are the top 3 things in this class. Midterm&Final exam are open book and notes as well. He makes random funny comments as well. Super nice and actually cares about helping his students

Worst Class I've Ever Taken. I swear he makes college UNenjoyable. He serious swears all of his students are taking no other class than his. Worst ever!!!! Very Rude to his students especially if you ask questions about the lectures. Literally did not understand 85% of his lessons. Oh and don't expect to get an A in class. Not Happening.

Prof. Calvin us one of the Most disrespectful teachers in regards of his demeanor towards his students. I've repeatedly asked questions in his class and his gives a smart sarcastic answer. I'm asking questions because I want to learn. Smh. I did not quite understand the curriculum presented in class. I get straight A's. Not this time.

Took his ethics class. Didn't really favor him. He's all over the place when he teaches which just makes everything confusing. Told my class we wouldn't need to purchase the book, but trust me I NEEDED that book. Takes attendance VERY seriously. I missed 3 days and he dropped me so yeah. Sums him up.

I took this professor over the summer. Like your usual teachers he expects the class to read the material and come prepared for participation. He is strict on policies such as attendance, food, and phone. But he is always accessible. I was able to talk to him during office hours, email, etc. Great teacher who knows what he is talking about.

I took this professor for summer. Yeah you do have to read a lot and pay attention, but overall he is a great teacher. He is very helpful and intelligent. If you pay attention and ask him for help, you will pass. Great personality as well.

Cavin is the best professor at cypress! I have taken a few of his classes and honestly I wish he would just teach all the phil classes. His lectures will leave you pondering the world and you will take them home with you, really! He is truly inspiring. I just may become a phil professor after these classes. Also make use of his office hours.

Professor Greg Cavin is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. Now if we disregard the fact that I hate philosophy, he is so disrespectful to his students, very passive aggressive and doesn't know what he's talking about 99% of the time. I have honestly never felt such a struggle to stay awake for any class besides his.

HARDEST PROF I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT CYPRESS. This is supposed to be an INTRO class. Sorry, my teenage brain doesn't understand philosophy. Basically everything is on powerpoint. However, it gets confusing and frustrating to follow. There's a lot to memorize and a lot of confusing days. Kids fall asleep in class. 98% of us don't understand anything.

Professor Cavin is by far THE BEST professor at Cypress College. He is very intelligent and passionate for philosophy. He was respectful and attentive to the needs of his students. He's definitely not the easiest prof, but if you just come to class, hw and ask lots of questions, you'll do well in his class. I got an A because i worked my butt off!

I recommend Dr. Cavin! He is a very caring teacher that really wants to help his students succeed. He even gives a waive for homework to be due the next week and give us a lot of time for homework help and advise. I sat in the front of his class and enjoyed his lectures because he could really get your attention and focus. Just do your homework.

First class I ever took at Cypress. He cares about philo a lot so in depth lectures all the time. Interesting, but every concept is open ended since the answers are unknown. I got an A, his grading is clear and if you are a decent writer you'll do fine.

i took his intro to phil class and lectures were very confusing. he's organized and knows what hes talking about but the topics themselves are hard to grasp. what helped me for the midterm/final were his ppts so those are helpful bcause the readings he assigns are difficult to understand. other than that, its an easy A!

Great professor. Usually just walk in, sit down, and listen to his lectures(which are always inspirational and entertaining) Plus his voice is soothing so I was always so relaxed in class lol. Very helpful and always goes over questions that will be on final and midterm. overall a very kind and great professor that I would take again!

Go to class, listen, participate, and then study the questions for the midterm and final essays. Term paper is easy too. Extra credit if you go see him with what you did on everything. Didn't really need the book. As long as you go to class and know what to look for in his power points you'll get an A. Great professor who loves his subject.

Calvin is passionate about philosophy but lectures are extremely boring and unorganized. Highly enforced needing the book but just study the powerpoint and you will be fine. Free-response midterm and final but they're all open note. Usually goes over answers session before the exam. 1 term-paper. Easy A class, just really boring. Go to office hours

I am a 53 year old male. I felt this course is exactly what I needed as a returning Cypress College student in '85,'86,'87. The education I received makes me look at my individual self subjectively and objectively to stay motivated to obtain my degree goals. His class is a must in my book.

Only three things go in the gradebook- the midterm, term paper, and final exam. Take good notes on his powerpoints. Yes, you need the book. You can tell he really cares about his students and is passionate about his work. His PHIL100C class changed my perspective on life. Take him.

Definitely take this class with him! Some concepts are pretty confusing but he does a really great job of explaining things in a way that they can be understood. He is really passionate in his lectures which I enjoyed. He gives you extra credit for going to his office hours which is highly worth it because he helps for the midterm and final.

Professor Cavin is one of the greatest professor I know! He's very dedicated and inspirational to his students. All of the information you need to know is on the PPT too bad he's retiring... But he is super helpful and kind and genuinely cares about his students. He does make you work for the class but it was completely worth it. Very encouraging!!
