I am sorry that his class is required. Sorry guys.
Greg is a horrible professor. The class consists of an 8 year old powerpoint that we are required to review and do our own research and tell him what is out of date. Any question that is asked in class is answered with " I don't know, why don't you do some research and get back to me."
I took Greg for MIS 200 and absolutely loved him!! He is a very relatable guy and will go above and beyond for his students. If you do all the assignments, show up to class, put in effort the course is enjoyable!
I had Greg for 200 this semester and he was great! As long as you put in the effort you will do well and have a good time. I would absolutely take him again.
Greg is a fantastic professor and a really solid guy. His guidelines are very clear and he does a great job of making class entertaining. As long as you go to class and put in some effort, you will get an A.
Everything was very clear and all answers to homework etc. are directly from powerpoints that he uploads on blackboard. Really just a chill and caring professor. One of my top 3 professors at this university. Get extra credit point for attending 90% of classes, which usually get out early. Had a fun Family Feud game at end of semester to review.
Not bad of a class at all. Since it was online very heavy textbook reading (or atleast thats what I did) but atleast the textbook isnt too boring. Tests are very straight forward if you read and studied homework questions. Each week is a new chapter which entails a discussion post, quiz, and homework. Pretty straightforward and easy class.
Greg was a very good professor, he was always joking around and making the class laugh. Tests aren't hard, homework is due every Sunday at midnight and it's not hard at all. Take this class
Super unclear grading criteria. He changes a lot of the assignments and their weight to your grade in the class. He gave us homework assignments on Excel that none of us had background on, unless you happened to be fluent in excel prior to the class. Hes a great person but I would not recommend him for MIS 200.
Greg assigned a semester long group project that added absolutely no value to my life in any way. He reads straight from the PowerPoint and offers no more educational Information; if you ask about this hell tell you to go read the text book. He constantly changes the syllabus and doesnt even explain the way his grading system works.
Did not teach anything in this class and I could not tell you a single thing we "learned." His grading scale is very unfair and he does not scale.
The worst class I have taken at UA so far. The most unclear and unfair grading system. You will learn absolutely nothing in this class. but if you use socratic and quizlet you will get 100s on homework and quizzes. The group project grading is the worst. Greg is a terrible communicator. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR
I felt bad for greg, it was his first time teaching a lecture to 200 people and he was not prepared. I think he will be a better professor with time, he is sweet and funny. He extended deadlines and rounded up grades for me because I was friendly to him. The group project was unnecessary but boosted grades if you tried. Overall great guy
Dont take this guy he literally doesnt teach crap. He gives you tests that he doesnt even know whats on them then will give you assignments that he hasnt even looked at. Would definitely not recommend
This guy is an actual joke. He bragged that he taught so well last year when it was all online for COVID. After the first test this year the average in the class was a 67%. What you do in class does not correlate to what you will be tested on at all. He doesn't even know what is on his own tests and does not know how to teach. Don't take whatsoever
Worst professor I have ever had. Test has absolutely no correlation to what he "teaches". I once emailed him very respectfully asking for HIS HELP submitting a completed assignment so that it would be in on time, and he replied "assignment is not complete until turned in" without answering my question. I am convinced he actually wants you to fail.
Doesnt offer any help to students when asks, doesnt read emails before he answers, tests are unclear, doesnt teach and only rambles. DO NOT TAKE.
Do not take this professor if you want to take MIS 200 for an easy A. He refuses to let you takes notes. The class avg for our first test was a 60 something, and he scaled one class by 12 points and our class by 4. All around he tries to make MIS hard and puts the blame on his students even though it is on him.
I took him online and he was nice up until the end of add/drop. Then he added multiple more assignments to be completed per week. Is not accessible to communicate. If you have trouble with your assignments over the weekend you can forget getting any sort of response from him. Tests are nothing like the review material that me makes you do.
Does not teach, must teach yourself all info via the text book Constantly changing the syllabus&assignments worth Will not work with you on late/misgraded assignments or attendance Will blame students for issues not himself Majority of class failed 1st 2exams Does not care if you pass "it is very rare to get an A in my class" -Greg first day
I would strongly advise against taking MIS 200 with Greg. He expects you to know how to do all of the in class assignments and if you don't understand how, he suggests to "watch a youtube tutorial on it" instead of teaching it. Tests are also very unfair and he finds the most specific and hard to reach questions.
Very disorganized with constant changes. Prepare to spend hours searching for, or trying to decipher, what you are being asked to do, only to find out the assignment is missing or the instructions were wrong. Grading is confusing. Exams seem overly complex, confusing and not reflective of key takeaways from the material.
He changed the way we do everything halfway through the class. He gave some classes curves and others none. Greg makes me cry at least once a week.
He does a poor job at communicating expectations clearly. The course itself isnt difficult. However, Professor Cottrell continuously proved to make this course confusing and frustrating. Take another professor.
This class was a thorn in my side. What is supposed to be a lower level class took away from my higher level courses. He is incredibly disorganized and kept changing dates and time and the curriculum assigned did not pertain to what was on the exam. If his goal was to make this class undesirable he met it. Find someone else if you value sanity.
This guy sucks. His lectures do not correlate to the tests or the assignments that are given in the textbook. His discussion response assignments are also from 3 years ago. Like isn't this supposed to be a class related to technology? Maybe the tests would actually be easy if he TAUGHT the material. If you miss bc of COVID too bad ur getting a 0
He's a really nice guy, but a pretty bad professor. Does not test on the material he says he is going to test on. Gives unhelpful study guides and advice.
absolute worst professor at the university, dont even bother studying for the tests because you will fail them anyway. none of the information comes from his lectures and to be honest, I don't know where he gets the test questions from.
Greg is very disorganized and his exams dont follow the study guide be will give you 3 questions from the study guide and the rest will be random questions from an extra assignment he didnt teach but gave as homework once at the beginning of the semester that you completely forget about he makes it most of the exam take any other teacher
Its impossible to tell where he gets his test questions from. Other than that, the class is easy. There are tons of extra credit opportunities that can get you to an A- even if youre making low Bs on tests, but you can study hard and still make a C because the questions just arent covered in class.
Absolutely horrible and very mean. Should not be a teacher.
He was unresponsive during an online test that he did not open correctly. He leaves out important parts of test material and his study guides are useless.
This class was alright same pattern every week the only thing that throws you off are the test. Sometimes the test are 50% of an assignment you did for homework one time and never discussed again. So watch out for that. He does offer a study guide for the information that is in the book and powerpoint that are really helpful for the other 50%
Tests ask way more than textbook material and you can study for hours just to get a C. Avoid at all costs.
Take anyone else if you can. He was not awful, but the class was extremely unorganized with a lot of busy work. I felt that tests were unfair as I would study the study guides, practice test, quiz, etc and then got Cs on every test because the material was different. There was enough extra credit and other grades that I finished w an A
greg is a ok teacher in the sense that he does attendance online so you dont have to show up you just need to know when he makes you log in for attendance and the quizes are all online and all on quizlett so its easy to get good grades on that but he gives random assignments and projects that do not make sense. he makes you calculate your own grade
This was his first semester teaching this and it was chaotic at best. Tests didn't align with lectures and were mostly based on textbook. His assignments were ill aligned with course material. Tests were oddly specific and didn't cover concepts as much as random facts. He was such a nice guy but the class lacked. (The TA saved us! Love you MB).
I had to take this class for my major and didnt like it at all. The tests were really hard and over things he didnt cover. The class is discussion based and I feel like I didnt learn much. He was nice but just did not teach this class well. The final exam made up for his lack of teaching tho.
The class is very unorganized and a lot of the things we did in preparation for tests did not help us on the test. Greg wasnt a terrible professor but the class seemed like a lot of busy work and learning everything on my own.
Greg is just not a good instructor. He's a nice guy but none of his class structure makes any sense. The first test is hard because he doesn't tell you what's on it. His "lectures" are just reading a powerpoint and expecting you to know everything in the chapter somehow. His scaling makes no sense. He makes you calculate your own final grade.
Greg isnt horrible but hes definitely the worst option for mis200. He just doesnt communicate well with the class and is not very understanding with inconveniences. Although the class itself wasnt too hard of a class
Greg is hands down on of the worst professors at Bama. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! He does not know how to teach, just reads off of his slides. The first exam majority of the class failed (over 200 students) and still did not think he was the problem. Gives really confusing assignments that he never teaches and you have to figure out how to do yourself.
I attended every class and did every assignment on time, along with seeking help outside of class. I studied for hours for the exams just to make 75-80s on all of them (half the material for the third exam was based on a single in class activity we talked through once weeks before the exam.) All of this to make a B and ruin my 4.0 Avoid Greg.
Cottrell definitely isnt the worst professor I have had, but he could have used improvement. Some of the assignments were pointless and the tests were WAY too hard for the material we actually learned in class. You have to read your book if you want to pass. Regular in class assignments and extra credit.
Poor Greg. Good man, but definitely the wrong class for him. Course shell was completely disorganized, assignments were horribly designed, and lectures have nothing to do with exams. So much homework. Reading the book thoroughly and doing the study problems are what got me through this class. Take some other professor for this class if you can.
this class had SO much random homework and assignments it was so easy to miss something. his lectures had nothing to do with the tests and it was painful to sit through them. he was also very hard to reach outside of of class and almost never answered my question when he would respond, it would be some vague answer that didnt make sense.
I'll preface saying I can see remnants of others' reviews. However, I watched him improve throughout the semester. His classes are worthwhile and RECORDED, for 4/5 of the class that don't even attend. He provided a practice test (ungraded) AS WELL as a bonus assignment (for who attended). His hours were more than flexible, and the TA was great.
Greg, it’s a intro level 200 class. The test are passable but ridiculously hard for a intro class. I would be surprised if students took his class and still wanted to be MIS majors. I don’t understand the point of making students hate the material you’re teaching.
I understand the other reviews, but in my opinion this professor isnt as bad as what it seems. Although its a 300 person lecture, he does try to call on people for participation and did try taking attendance a few times this sem. Hes very understanding though and is truly caring in person 1 on 1. You definitly have to go to class to understand work
The class isn't really entertaining, but he's a nice guy. MIS isn't what I like, but he does make it pretty easy and manageable.
This guy is the definition of a loser. He does not care about your grade whatsoever. Office hours are a joke, he does not help you one bit.
Greg is a great guy. You might not see it at first though, I didn't either. But after going to office hours one time for a favor (that was rejected), I found out that he's actually extraordinarily nice and relatable. Instead of giving me the first favor, he saved it and excused 3 late quizzes at the end of the semester because of a personal issue.
Final in 40 minutes. Either way it goes, I think Greg is a good man & a great professor. He's not perfect, but he cares about his students. If you can be bothered to go to class and put in a lil effort, you'll be fine. Homework & quizzes are due every Wednesday but they are easy. Tests are hard but with extra credit its fine. Final not cumulative.
This class was not easy for me at all, but he offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester. As long as you go to class you will get a good grade. I went to office hours and he was very nice. Attendance is not mandatory but he will help you out if he knows that you come to class.
Greg is a great guy. The class is purely memorization. Get to know him by going to office hours and he is very lenient. I got a 102 in the class. People who give him a 1 either don't want to memorize vocab terms or never showed up to class. Class is an easy A if you can memorize. He gave so much extra credit to bump you an entire letter grade.
Class was easy enough to not really need aid from the professor, but he always was helpful with reminders and gave a lot of information about what we were doing throughout the week. Seemed like a very nice man
I have been a straight-A student throughout my high school and college experience and never once have I bombed a test as I have in his class. I studied a collective 30 hours leading up to the first exam using the slides, notes, and practice exam provided by Cottrell. Unannounced to me, none of what we were given to study was actually on our exam.
This professor is RUDE! he does not help his students and does not care about you unless you are a MIS major. His tests are not even on the material in the textbook or study guide he provides. I would drop before the deadline and take a different professor.
I am currently a MIS major and his class alone is making me want to change my Major, I haven't even gotten into the upper-level classes. Tests are nothing like notes, lectures, textbooks, slides, study guides, quizzes, or self-assessments. He brings in speakers for over half of the classes or talks about stuff that doesn't relate to our subject.
Avoid taking Cottrell at all costs. Worst professor at the University of Alabama by far. If you want to hate MIS and your life, then take him.
Don't take this professor
Lectures had little reference to the exam and quiz material, you would be better served by just studying the book, but he does mandatory attendance so you can't skip his class. He had a dumb question about the motto on his exam, which would have been fine if it was just the first exam, but it happened CONSECUTIVELY. Study guide given 2 days before.
Does not allow ant late credit and or late submissions
To be honest, he wastes way too much time in class talking about how hurt he is that more people don't show up. He only gives 3 absences and does attendance quizzes everyday. He legit started trying to do the quizzes on paper since so many people took them at home. Overall, not the greatest professor.
Greg Cottrell is easily one of the worst professors I've ever had at UA. His lectures are filled with nonsense and none of the information given in the modules actually pertains to the course content. He just rambles on about students not doing well on exams and rather than helping understand why he just throws the blame back on the students.
The biggest thing is the test are nothing like the notes, lectures, textbooks, slides, study guides, quizzes, or self-assessments. He spends half of the class everyday talking about how no one shows up and how everyone is failing. There is a textbook but there is so much material given for just a 50 question exam so you don't know what to study.
Stay away at all costs. This will tank your GPA. There are easier ways to get through lower division business without taking Cottrell. Genuinely makes my brain throb in pain with the poor communication and impossible to study for exams.
Cottrell is the worst professor I've had on this campus. No competition. He does not prepare you for tests, leaves you hanging on the excel assignments, and is NO help when you reach out to him. DO NOT TAKE. I wish I would've heeded the advice of everyone on here!
Greg is simply the worst teacher I have ever had. He never teaches in class and just reads off a slide. Exams are nothing like what you are taught or the material given. Then when you get to the exam, nothing you have gone over is even on the test. The excel assignments are brutal and you won't pass any of those assignments. Worst professor at UA
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO! He barely lectures about what will be on the exams. He instead talks about how people should change their major to MIS or goes on and on about fantasy football. The first two exams were a joke. Pretty sure he was trying to be funny and put questions on the exam that have nothing to do with the class material.
He is a nice guy and all his classwork can be found in quizlet, but his exams are very hard to pass. Attendance is mandatory and he gets pissy about it. Most of his lectures are just him rambling about how everyone should be an mis major... everyone was there just for the business school credits.
His lectures were boring and wasn't helpful. He spent the first 10-15 minutes of class talking about life or the weather. He gave a study guide for each test but it wasn't that helpful. It was basically a broad list of terms. He gave out extra credit towards the end of the year only because the test score averages for the first 2 tests were so low.
Do not take this professor. I repeat, do not take him. This guy is absolutely the worst professor at The University of Alabama. Tests are almost impossible to get above a C on, as he does not prepare you for tests in any way. Just all around a horrible teacher. If you are thinking about taking his class, think again. You can thank me later.
Greg is genuinely my least favorite person on this earth. Tests are impossible, mandatory attendance, he picks people out in the middle of class, and doesn't teach you anything you will need to know on the tests during the lectures.
Every review on here dogging him is dead wrong. This man is a saint, fantastic class. Cottrell is a great professor who is willing to work with you, gives a ton of extra credit, and wants to see you succeed. Lecture is usually pretty concise, and exams aren't too difficult. Study guides are provided. This man is awesome, take him for MIS200!
Professor Cottrell made the class guidelines very clear and provided extra credit opportunities. He is a stickler for attendance and participation. The class was not for me, but he knows what he is talking about. Prepare for his snarky comments and personality though. Quizzes are easy and can be taken twice. Exams are difficult though.
DO NOT TAKE COTRELL!!! You may think the class is easy in the beginning but he makes it way harder than it should be. He gives study guide quizzes before each test, but does not release what you got wrong until after you take the real test. Plus, the test is nothing like the study guide. He gives excel homework without teaching us how to do it.
Professor Cottrell gives extra credit, and generally wants to see his students succeed. That said, his class ALWAYS felt like a waste of time. He would talk most of the class about things that are completely unrelated. I wouldn't care that much if his tests were easy, but they were hard. Worst professor overall that I've ever taken.
spends most of class talking about random stuff and trying to make jokes that no one really cares to hear. Just reads powerpoints that you are able to see at home, but complains that students don't come to class. Test aren't really what we learn in class and just have to be very prepared
Greg is awful. He is extremely rude to students if you're not an MIS major. The class is all over the place and he makes simple concepts extremely complicated. You can't contact him by email, only Teams. Each lecture is spent talking about how assignments are graded, then he lectures for 15 minutes. stay away at all costs!!!!
Worst professor I have ever had. This man does not know what he is doing. All he ever talks about is why you should be an MIS major rather than actually teaching what you need to know. Tests are nothing he talks about and he gives excel homework that he never shows you how to do. He also has no personality and does not care about his students.
Exams cover way too much information that is impossible to go over. Thinks MIS is our only class??? So ridiculous. He seems like a nice guy but he needs to get off his high horse and realize he is an awful professor.
Tests are way too heavy on material. We took our first test on Scantron and it took him 25 minutes to get everything passed out. By the time I started the test, I only had 25 minutes to take a 50 question, difficult test. He's also extremely passive aggressive.
Just awful. Awful
Greg was kinda an average prof. He was very particular about attendance and the tests were not the easiest to study for, but if you show up and do the assignments, it's not difficult.
Do not take this professor if you rely on lectures to learn information. You will have to learn a lot of the material on your own, an attend help sessions.
I cannot stress how much I would never recommend taking this professor. If this is on your schedule, I genuinely advise you to drop MIS and retake with a different professor another semester. You can spend hours studying for the test, and it will still include material you will never have seen. The questions are bizarre.
I am a 4.0 student and have never struggled so hard on a test in a class. After hours of studying the "study guide", your hit with questions that make no sense and he never talks about in class. He gives some extra credit but he "doesn't believe in curving." TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
This is a professor that really challenges you to apply the information discussed in class to your career and problem-solving processes. However, I wish assignments were not due till 11:59 PM. Blackboard grading would be encouraged, there are other options available but I personally think using blackboard is more efficient.
He is extremely rude to students in class and gives out lots of homework that gets much harder at the end of the semester. Gives extra credit but posts grades rarely and is overall not someone I would not recommend.
I missed a week of school due to a crisis in February. When we finally met after he canceled 3 times, he just criticized me and asked multiple times what I had experienced that prevented me from attending class despite me telling him I don't feel comfortable sharing. He took an hour to say that he doesn't feel comfortable giving credit then. 0/10.
Each test has 3 different variations. first test, I made a 54% on, next test I made a 94%. I am convinced the 3 different versions of the tests have different difficulty levels. first exam I studied hard and felt like I knew the content and attended class prior to the test, but still managed to fail. Questions on test were not talked ab in class.
Professor Cottrell made his class more difficult than all the other MIS professors. He is really nice and accessible out of class, but in class he has unclear criteria and you never know what's gonna be on the tests.
I have always been an all A student, but this was the hardest class I have ever taken. He does not go over ANYTHING that will be on the tests and rambles about nothing that is relevant to what we are learning. The tests are impossible. I would study for hours and would make Ds and Cs because none of the material correlated.Excels are impossible too
The other reviews are crazy and obviously dumb business majors. Greg is a great guy, and he cares about his students. His class might be tough, but he successfully prepares you for future classes, as well as your career. Greg gets a lot of hate, but he is a good professor and heavily supports his students and MIS program.
Evil. Took him online, all assignments due at 7:00 on Friday except exams which opened on Friday and were due at 7:00 Sunday. Would not round up my 93.9 to a 94. Consider someone else. His TA did almost everything as well.
Took a class for my MBA program. At the start of the semester he said he was considering a data analytics certification like Tableau or maybe SQL, I assume. Instead, we did a useless group project that taught me nothing. Now I'm having trouble finding work, as a certification would have been extremely useful in making me more marketable.
Greg does a great job relating the content of his class back to the real world with a sense of humor. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. MIS 200 is hard. If you are not willing to learn and follow instructions, then this class probably isn't for you. Work hard & listen during lectures, and it will be reflected in your grade.
He is honestly very nice,I interacted with him multiple times throughout the semester but isnt a good professor. We are halfway through the sem. and approaching our 1st exam and he has not taught us one thing. He goes off on long tangents for the entire class and never relates back to the topic. Grade is 60% of tests but going to class is pointless
I think Greg Cottrell is an awful professor and doesn't care for his students. He doesn't have any of his material on the tests and expects you to know all of the information and make good grades. he will not take the blame for the whole class doing bad, just say that you aren't studying enough.
There are four tests. Greg checked out years ago. He told us today in class that he is overworked. He uses our lecture hour as a break. He gives the whole student body the metaphorical middle finger everyday when he goes over current events and says it is on the test. He lied. He doesn't teach. Drop the class, find a professor that has the time.
Class: useless. Prepare to teach yourself, read every bit of your textbook, and give up on class unless you want to learn about the Saints and tennis technology. Tests: Cottrell made a 90 when taking his own first exam. In all of his sections, the highest grade was a 78. This req. class is going to ruin my average. Unbelievable. Pls replace him.
This dude blows
These reviews are crazy honestly his class is pretty easy and isnt much work. I would agree that he isnt the best professor as you will not learn that much but everything that was on the test was on the study guide he gave us. As long as you are willing to put in some sort of effort you will do fine in the class.
Just dont do it im sorry Mr. Cottrell is a nice guy and is very respectable, but is not good at translating information about MIS.
My opinion is that Greg Cottrell is objectively unfit to continue as a lecturer at UA. Based on my experience in Greg's MIS 200 course, I believe there are grounds for a formal grievance per the UA Faculty Handbook in relation to: test content, instructor's demeanor, comparative course workload, remedial measures. FYI, I am a 4.0 student at UA.
The class itself isn't horribly difficult, but you have to teach yourself everything. Greg has a very belittling demeanor and seems as if he doesn't want his students to succeed. He is very unapproachable and not the kindest person. His lectures are about his own personal interests and have nothing to do with MIS or the content on the tests.
Greg really needs to teach a class in patronizing people, it is what he's good at. His tests are based on lectures and random tiny little details from textbook. Everyone failed his first test in my class so he had to give extra credit (even though he "doesn't believe in it"). Just do not take him.
If you put in hours of work each week you will do fine, but it is not a pleasant experience and he frequently misguides on what will be on exams in lecture and says there will be bonus questions (none) and did not begin giving participation quizzes until end of semester - only gave us 2 and 3 lowest are dropped so they didn't impact grade at all.
His hectures had little to do with what was on the test and the test questions were often unfair. This was the only class i've ever taken in my life where I could study for hours and not do well on his tests. He also would not respond to help if you asked for it. He would just say look at the syllabus, and when I did it never helped.
Literally so bad. Had him 2 years ago for 200 and still easily the worst professor I've ever had. Extremely patronizing and hard to talk to. Don't take his class
Can't say enough bad things about this guy. Spends the whole class talking about 9/11, then tests on material he has never spoken of. Started doing attendance quizzes in NOVEMBER after people realized attendance was otherwise pointless. Actively tells you to NOT contact him if you need help. Material's not difficult, he is just a terrible teacher.
This man literally gave in class quizzes took them him self and literally failed his own quiz. He's a terrible teacher talks about nonsense and there's nothing that is on the test that he talked about . Literally has given tests nobody knew a thing about.
He quite literally has no idea whats going on at all. Barely knows how to use excel himself and does not understand how to teach.
Do not take him, gave us an online quiz on Exprep and proceeded to get a 50 because someone else wrote his quizzes and didn't look over them before giving them to us. Doesn't know how to use the program that he is responsible for teaching. He was very condescending and did not receive criticism well when students suggested a solution to a problem.
The homework assignments were easy if you already know how to use excel but he does not really teach you how to use it. His tests were hard to pass unless you lived in the textbook and had no other priorities. One test we took had a high of 78 in the whole class. Was not very friendly at times and did not cover anything important in lectures.
Absolutely terrible, very condescending and super vague when you ask for help. Lots of homework that doesn't pertain to the lectures. The TA's don't know what they're doing either so you better have a friend who's taken MIS before if you want to pass. Gives out pop quizzes that he can't even pass himself.
Guy is terrible
get ready to fail
Doesn't help if you ask questions after class, and he will tell you to meet him during his office hours. Makes assignments that don't make sense and will tell the class that nothing is perfect. Mades a 50 on his own quiz. Honorary Yapper. Tests contain material that isn't gone over in class.
I had the unfortunate of taking a course with this guy, and it has left me with a sense of frustration. The challenges was the scattered nature of his work, making it incredibly difficult for students to locate essential materials. This guy seemed to blame students for confusion rather than addressing the fundamental issues with the course structure
I am begging you not to take this guy. Legit horrible
Greg Cottrell often convinces me through his lectures that he has no idea what he is talking about. I have never known a professor to deviate from the lesson so often while reading directly from the slides. The best way to study for MIS 200 with him is to do the modules on the textbook, because I promise he won't teach you effectively.
I had Cottrell during the Fall of 2022 semester. This class was a nightmare, the first exam was like a sledgehammer in the fact that 95% of the questions on the exam was on material not covered during lectures. If you didn't read the book, you were screwed. also the quiz/exam questions were ripped straight from the book problems.
Cant say enough bad things about this man. He gives lots of HW and does not show you how to do it in any way shape or form. Attendance isnt technically mandatory but he often gives lots of random in class quizzes that count for your grade. He doesnt teach actual material, just goes on random tangents and kicks u out of class if ur not listening
Greg is a passionate man with high standards. Slackers looking for a free A+ will be disappointed but if you work hard and attend class you can earn a very high grade in this class. Greg isn't into hand-holding and coddling but he will teach you the material and prepare you for the real world.
His lectures consist primarily of him complaining about students performing poorly on exams due to his poor delivery of the course material. It's not the end of the world if you end up with him hw wasn't always bad; just be prepared to do a lot of self-learning. However, do not skip class because he loves doing a lot of pop quizzes.
Do not take, please just trust me.
His lectures were boring and didn't align with the tests very well. Tests were hard but he will throw in a bonus point or two. There was an in-class quiz that he got a 50 on and we had to argue with him for 30 minutes for him to remove it. Seemed fairly nice but was condescending a lot. Take someone else if possible, but it is doable if you study.
A lot of what people complain about is the actual framework of the class rather then Greg himself. With that being said, He is just a condescending and unhelpful personality. His lectures are rarely helpful. I went to his office hours and found him just as unmotivated as he is in class. Do everything you can to avoid him as a business major.
Sometimes it was hard for Cottrell to really get his points across. During lectures we would spend 15 minutes on one slide that had a couple sentences but breeze past 5 that had lots of content on them. He does actively try to engage the class which is nice, but I think could be improved. It is clear he is trying though.
Avoid taking this d-head online as much as you can, or just avoid taking him at all. He doesn't provide any explanation on how to do the Excel assignments and gives terrible questions on them, and he gives the worst feedback you could use. This guy is making a summer class harder than it should be.
I didn't find the homework/exprep hard. But his TESTS are a total game of roulette. One of them was just the exact same info as his study guide, making it easy. Naturally, I used the same study method for the next one. He completley changed the test format and I bombed. My #1 piece of advice is go over **everything** you have. Thats your best bet.
Cottrell gets a bad rep because students who aren't MIS majors want an easy A and this is a real class. The class workload is decided by the department, not him, and he often spends class time giving homework answers. Lectures don't always translate perfectly to exams but the textbook does so come ready to read and you'll be fine.
Gives too much homework that gets graded very funky, has no type of leniency or remorse towards extensions on any of the work / test he gives with strangely early deadlines. Would not recommend this man by all means.
He never teaches what the tests are on and wastes a lot of class time doing nothing
Professor Cottrel is just rude. Overall tests were very similar to reviews, but the in-class quizzes were random and you were given five minutes to complete them which was not enough time. Questions were over things we had not yet covered in class
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Nothing he teaches in class is on the exams. There is a high chance you will fail this class. He doesn't know how to teach and he shouldn't be teaching.
Content is not bad just not a great teacher. Answers questions poorly and does not seem to care on how his students do in the class. Had a technology issue during an exam and said good luck, this class is all done on a computer and would be nice for a little help.
Greg was awesome, I don't know why his reviews are so bad. There are a variety of 20 pt extra credit opportunities and around 5000 points available. The study guides for the tests are very straightforward so you don't study the wrong things, and he is happy to answer questions. He is the only professor that has answered me within 24 hours via email
I can't say what I want to say about him on here, but DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is by far the worst professor and doesn't teach you a thing.
Do not take. Though this class is not very difficult, he is always rude to students. Also, don't even think about skipping class because he does class quizzes everyday. Also, if you are sitting in the back of class, he will come up and call you out and make you answer questions.
I took MIS200 with Greg after withdrawing from the course the semester prior, I liked Greg more than the other professor I took originally (Seth Miesse). This class is not easy and is notorious for being unnecessarily difficult. I think regardless of who you take this class is awful. Just be as prepared as you can and lock in is my best advice.
Everyone who thinks hes awful is just soft. He gives lots of oppurtunities for extra credit and tests are super easy if you pay attention.
Professor isn't important for this course, they dont have much say. Weekly homework that takes less than an hour, not hard if you can learn excel. Exams were not hard, though sometimes referenced obscure examples from lectures long forgotten. Greg was a ok lecturer but often just read off powerpoints. Textbook was useless. Class isn't really hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I just took his final and genuinely half of the things on this exam were not covered in lectures nor on the study guide. His weekly assignments and extra credit can help boost your grade, but he is not helpful when reaching out for office hours/help.
He tries to be so relatable and so nice but at the end of the day, he does not care about you at all. He leaves all my messages on read and my messages are questions the whole class is wondering. Grading isn't awful but the class as a whole is awful
Dont recommend. I missed a test due to a funeral(Excuse absence). I sent an email and was told he would count it as the drop test we are all given. Study guides are useless. weekly in-class quizzes, which aren't hard. Overall if you can get the other professors, I would recommend that as he uploads their recorded lectures to Blackboard.
Everyone seems to hate him but as long as you go to class and do the homework (it takes MAYBE an hour a week) then you'll be fine. Very Microsoft Excel heavy but that is to be expected. Tests are very similar to the reviews and you get a drop test.
Honestly he's not as bad as everyone on here says he is. As long as you put in some effort into the class you will do fine. The homework is all excel so if your not good with excel is can be tough. Although attendance isn't mandatory we have in class quizzes that are an easy way to boost your grade and he will often do the excel homework in class.
I definitely don't recommend!! The class is not extremely hard but he is very rude and doesn't care about giving all the information. He also heavily relies on his T/A (probably more than he should) to do most of the assignments. His main contribution is reading off the PowerPoint slides. If you can, pick another professor.
Cottrell does NOT deserve the scores that he receives on here. Greg won't just hand you an A, which many people go into the class expecting. He is a fine teacher who makes his expectations very clear. His study guides are very helpful for the tests. The textbook is not necessary, though it can be a helpful tool for review. Any effort=Pass
Professor Cottrell was one of the most difficult instructors I've had. His lectures were disorganized and often hard to follow, making it difficult to understand the course material. He wasn't very approachable during office hours. The exams felt disconnected from what was taught in class, and grading seemed inconsistent. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!
While Greg Cottrell isn't an awful professor, he isn't a great one either. His lectures were long and boring, with him just reading off the slide and rambling on. Often, he wouldn't finish the entire PowerPoint. He is also just rude and condescending. His TA, Elliott, was great and honestly did more work in the class than he did.
Terrible Professor.
I am surprised with the negative reviews. He is a great teacher literally all you have to do is show up.
The score on this does not reflect what I feel he deserves. Very simple class if you show up. You can drop the final and miss three weeks without a negative affect on your final, don't know what more to ask for. People say he doesn't respond on teams, but have had no such experience. Be a student and you'll be fine!
Yeah boi!!!
All you have to do is show up his quizzes will literally ask what color shirt he is wearing. He's great & funny
He's a good professor overall, but the only issue for me is when it came to the StageGate and the website we used to grade that assignment ended up messing up my grade and he wasn't willing to override it. Most of his notes are on PowerPoint and to study for his exam, all you got to do is read the PowerPoint and you should be fine.
Just an all around bad guy. Super rude and really bad lectures. Not really sure why he is a teacher at UA. They should fire him and hire one of his TAs to replace him
Just a bad guy
Class is easy, but he goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with tests/hw. Material isn't too bad, but be prepared to learn it all on your own or go to the TA's.
Surprised by the bad ratings. If you put in the work it should reflect your grade, he offered multiple bonus opportunities at the end of the semester and you get a drop test.
Do not take him
The ratings are blown out of proportion. He takes attendance once a week and literally goes through the excel assignments in class and gives you the answers on the day he doesn't take attendance. Just go to class and study a little for the tests. If you put some effort in its not that hard.
Very unorganized and rude. Talks down to you when you ask questions during his review and makes you feel bad about yourself for not know material that he didn't explain well. DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COST.
Cottrell is cool and all but doesn't really teach well in my opinion and definitely talks down towards his students. You can pass his class if you do the work and go to his class for the attendance grade. Also he talks a lot about other things not necessary so be mindful of that.
He really is not that bad. Tests weren't awful. He just doesn't really care about his students and goes off on useless tangents. However, if you have him its not the end of the world, I made a good grade in his class and he even does hw help.
He only takes attendance one day a week (lecture day) and the other class that week he goes over the homework that is due the following week. This class is really easy if you understand how to use excel. He's not the nicest and if you don't understand something the first time he will make you feel dumb for it. He also offers some extra credit.
This class was a breeze! Take Cottrell! He is easy and creates ways for students to pass if you just pay attention. The hardest thing was the StageGate, but he held review sessions to help with this. Overall, he cares and will provide extra credit and he almost always let class out early. Take him!!
The tests are somewhat difficult and I swear the questions are worded to trick you but if you do all the work in the class you will pass. Dr. Cottrell doesn't deserve these negative reviews. If you go to class and say attention he's actually really personable and keeps class interesting. I would 100% take this class again with him as the teacher.
I took this class in the fall of 2024, but Cottrell isn't bad at all. I will admit that his way of teaching the class has changed a ton. I had friends who took him years prior who said that his class was extremely hard, so I understand the old bad reviews. As long as you go to class, you will easily pass this class.
The lectures are 25 minutes and he doesn't go nearly in depth enough to answer the difficult test questions. Somehow his tests have different content and questions than other MIS professors. He also was unclear on how extra credit and attendance would be graded
While he is a nice guy. Tough professor. Not very knowledgeable on the assignments or the tests. From my understanding he doesn't write them or look at them which leads to students struggling. Classes are quick then the tests have nothing to do with the study guide. I worked super hard and walked away with an A-. Take another professor if possible.
Do not take Greg. His lectures are very confusing and he will ramble about things that are not related to class. He does not do a good job about reminding us what is due during the week. There is a lot of homework but he does give you a good amount of time to complete it.
Honestly a very mid professor. I studied a lot, but would still do bad on the tests, however they are not worth a ton of your grade. A lot of weekly assignments and you need to make sure to do ALL of them. He does NOT round, even if you have a 93.99, it will not become an A.
As you can tell from these reviews, Greg is a bit of a rascal but the class is easy if you show up and study the review packets obsessively.
this guy is making us pay for everything to do class and homework and everything.I'm having to spend 400 dollars just to take this class. Dont TAKE
I would highly avoid taking this professor. He comes to his own classes unprepared and just rambles on about things instead of teaching the actual materials. Not only does he make you purchase texts books but makes you buy a subscription just so he can keep attendance for the class. If you can't find another teacher, wait till next semester
seriously Do not like Cottrell. I do not respect him at all. Do not take him so that he can get fired.
His lectures are 20% the content (he just reads off slides) 80% him talking about unrelated topics. He literally does excel assignments for you. The exams are weirdly hard with tough grading critera. You need to memorize what the slideshow says word for word, multiple answers are correct, but you need what was word for word on the slides.
Phenomenal professor! My favorite part of the class was when he played relaxing classical piano music during our exams. Gregg didn't play music over the speakers--he literally brought in a Steinway & Sons grand piano and played LIVE music while we took our tests! It was the most awesome thing I've ever had a professor do!
Cottrell is actually not that bad. The beginning of the semester was rough because MIS 200 changed some of its curriculum so that we now have more group projects and a clicker for lectures. Previous reviews say he is terrible, but truly go to class and ACTUALLY STUDY. You will be fine. There is also a drop exam out of 4.
Gregs the MAN. Gotta show him some love since he made exams online. W professor.
Before taking his class I was scared based on previous reviews, but it really is not horrible. If you study for his test you will do fine. He cares about his students and yes there are a few group projects but that goes for every MIS200 class. I would say the HW is the hardest part, but it also allows unlimited attempts.
Greg is awesome. Some people are giving him bad ratings because they're intimidated by his unapologetic masculinity. Greg isn't afraid to behave like an alpha male. If you study hard the test aren't hard.
People give the guy too much crap, and I'll admit, I was one of them. As the semester went on, I realized he is really just trying to give the class a good time while learning something that may seem boring or uninteresting. He will often cancel classes in front of holidays as well. As long as you actually read the assignments, he is a good teacher
Super nice guy, I don't understand why there are so many bad ratings. His MIS200 class is really easy as long as you go to class.
It was literally miserable going to his class. He rambles on about nonsense things pretty much the entire class and maybe spends 1/4 of the class actually teaching the material. Also, excel takes a large part in this class and he never ONCE opened excel in class to teach it to us. He expects us to learn this on our own through QuantHub.
