A really great professor, he manages to engage the class in interesting information and ideas. He's willingly to help you out if you have any questions at all, and is very down-to-Earth, in and out of the classroom. Very good at getting the class thinking about things while leaving it open for input from him and other people.
He is great. One of the smartest people I've ever met. Just ask him about debate stories. Expect to learn a lot.

He's an excellent teacher who always has an intersting little tangent to tell the class to keep them engaged. Is very reasonable in grading, and doesn't make tests that try to trick you. If you want to be intelectually stimulated, take have this teacher.
He's a good teacher and makes the class interesting. He practically teaches right out of the book. I regret spending that $60.
Best teacher I've had at UMBC thus far. Very logical, organized in lecture but also engaging. I learned a lot and the work load was not bad at all; he gives very fair quizzes and tests. Great class, great teacher: definitely recommend.
Ealick is one of the most interesting professors you will ever have. When he gets excited he talks like Macho Man Randy Savage. "Snap into a Slim Jim!" If that isn't convincing enough he kind of looks like a pirate. You should definitely take class with this guy.
Has great examples and stories to back everything up, makes all concepts crystal clear. He is the stereotypical awesome "Dead Poet Society" cool college professor, and thats a good thing.
Excellent teacher! If you go to class and take notes you will be fine. He is really helpful and you will never be bored in class. He gives great examples and makes sure you undersatnd the material. Loved him!
good teach. delivers material well. May the gnomes be with you GE
Brilliant man! Thanx for the knowledge. You will love his yipee boots
the material was boring, but he did his best to make it more interesting. exams were all essay format so you must know how to write effectively, he can be a bit picky about wording. show up to class, the book isn't that helpful so getting the notes is a must!
Great and interesting teacher. Everything you need to know for the exams he says in lecture, so come to class always and take notes. He's very helpful and tries to explain things clearly.
He's a nice guy with a lot of fun in him but he doesn't like psychology much (my major...) so don't mention it. His tests and paper can sneak up on you but they are ultimately fair and he is relatively understanding. Keep up with the book. This is not a guaranteed easy class, period.
I didn't really like this class. I mean, I thought the debates on the subjects (abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment) were interesting, but I felt he just shot down anything anyone (philosophers in the book and students, alike) said about the topics. I thought he could be funny, but, honestly, I just thought of him as a huge elitist.
He has pop quizzes that are very confusing and he grades them very hard. But he makes it obvious when the pop-quizzes are. You REALLY have to work HARD for his class. I am an engineering major and i signed up "thinking" Phil 100 would be easy but it really isn't. On top of all my coursework PHIL 100 also was there to make things much harder.
Great professor. Taught epistemology from a modern viewpoint so the material was somewhat unfamiliar and more difficult. Grades based on three short (4-page) papers and a 10-15 pager. His comments are very helpful. Very helpful professor in general. Class is all discussion of material from the readings, so definitely read ahead to do well.
I came in ready for some fundamentalist beyond reach or insane liberal. Ealick kept a tight grasp on the class, which was amazing. The focus wasn't the inflammatory topics or opinions, but the formal logic and rhetorical skill behind the argumentation presented. Provides a good preview of what other phil classes will expect.
An overall great teacher! Incredibly interesting, clear to understand, and knowledgeable in the material covered. Highly recommended.
Take Notes. There is a quiz once a week about what was gone over in lecture (reading the book can be subsituted for class depending on the TA you get), two short essays you need to write and one long essay. None of the essays have set due dates and you can write about a variety of subjects discussed in class. He's very interested in philosophy.
loved him as a teacher, i actually LIKED waking up to go to this class... best teacher, made me interested in philosophy
I thought the class would be easy and somewhat interesting. But he pretty much sucks. The class is boring and you leanr nothing. I don't pay much attention and you could still get by. There are some pop quizzes but he tells you when they are. There pretty easy. Tests are easy as well if you prepare. He is unprofessional. Doesn't give note at all!!
This review will sound conflicting: The class material and his lectures are interesting(if you are a philosophy student), however, he is the laziest professor I have ran into. He does not have a set rubric for papers, and he arbitrarily throws in grades on papers. If the class is graded on papers, dont even think about an A.
Do not buy the book. I wasted money on it. Never used it. Just listen to his lectures. Hard part is lectures can be boring. The quizzes he gives are on the lectures. Everything is free response. I think it is impossible to get an A in his class. Tried my hardest ended up with a high B. I hear Jim Thomas is way cooler.
this class is not 'mandatory', but there are a few surprise quizzes & yes go to class. mostly lecture. he is a VERY funny teacher that likes to use sarcasm, but in the most positive way. I had a hard time understanding the material because I'm not a philosophy major. He is approachable :)
Ealick really made philosophy easy to understand - at least the parts that he covered in lectures. If you attend the lectures and take good notes, you will do well in Ealick's classes.
I took the Philosophy of Science Fiction this summer and it was a really great class. Prof. Ealick gives good, everyday examples to explain philosophical concepts. I would recommend taking Ealick's class if you have the opportunity.
Awesome professor. made the concepts very easy to understand if you attend lectures and pay attention. He's hilarious which made the lectures fun to go to. Best class I've taken thus far
Extremely interesting as a person and as a teacher. His lectures are a bit unfocused, and he suffers fools a little too leniently, but that's forgivable. Has obviously read widely in the relevant literature, and knows the terrain backward and forward. Very funny guy, as well. Recommended, if you can deal with the lack of overall organization.
Ealick is an awesome professor! He is hilarious and he makes the class really fun and interesting. There is a textbook, but he knows that most people don't read it, and you could get by just going to lectures and taking some notes. Attendance isn't mandatory. And there are pop quizzes, but he almost always drops hints the class before the quiz.
Ever since I have been at UMBC, I prefer Ealick's class more than any other professors within the Philosophy department. During Ealick's lecture, his material is easy to understand, cleverly humorous, and just downright charismatic where you just cannot wait to go to his next lecture. Outside of class, he's AWESOME. He is willing to help anytime!
I LOVED Phil of Bio with Prof. Ealick. He is, by far, one of the most knowledgable profs. I have had, and is very well read. His lectures can be a bit circular though, and he doesn't make any notes on the board, so learn to take notes FAST! He grades VERY harshly, so be prepared to work at your essays. Very approachable.
I did not use the textbook, waste of 80 bucks. He covers everything during lecture so just take notes and you ll be fine. He helps with the papers during office hour and the TA was really helpful. This was one of my favorite classes. I mean, the lecture is actually very thought provoking and exciting.
Ealick is the man. However, I would recommend going to each lecture and taking good notes. dont bother reading the text book
Great Guy, Great Professor.
He is fantastic! Totally hilarious, very helpful, write down everything he says and you'll fine. Although, you can tell he gets annoyed when people aren't getting him and they keep making stupid examples but as long as its not you it's pretty funny.
Awesome teacher, just be sure to be involved in discussion (which is often hilarious). He presents the material clearly and is straightforward, just take notes when you aren't laughing at his crazy jokes.
Excellent. He is hilarious, just pay attention. His exams are easy, just take a while. Everyone gets a low A or a high B on the exams, the key is to do well on the quizzes. He curves your grade up if he thinks you deserve it, so participate. He is awesome, just go to class and you have an A.
He's such a stranger person. Some people found his lectures funny but I thought some of the stuff he mentioned was messed up and inappropriate even for college kids. Every class he flipped a coin on whether there would be a quiz so you have to keep up with the readings and go to class. I thought it would be an easy class but it wasnt
Nice guy but definitively didnt sense the energy or humor mentioned in all the previous feedback. Dry chuckles at most and potential quiz for every class.
As a nonphil major, I only take this class for my gen ed credits. Its not that bad of a class. You must go to class and take good notes and don't fall asleep while I do sometimes...Exams are not that hard. Read some of the book, the most useful material are class notes.
Not a very good philosophy teacher at all. When he lectures he goes very fast. If you ask him to repeat something he can't remember what he just said. Must read textbook and take notes in class as best as you can.
Very knowledgeable man. Requires 3 short papers (3-4 pages), and 1 final paper (6-10 pages). If you are a philosophy major and have written philosophical papers before, take his 454 course; easy 'A'. If not, it will be a struggle, but a solid 'B' is reasonable. He talks the entire time, so staying awake is a struggle. Assigns interesting readings.
Ealick has no idea what he is doing. Most of his lectures are just random information thrown at you with no focus or direction related to the material. Honestly, how do you know what you're going to be tested on if the lectures aren't clear. Not an easy A. Avoid.
To be honest, I was looking forward to this class and thought it would be an easy "A" but it wasn't. You actually have to work hard. He lectures the whole entire time and most of the time, it's difficult to pay attention or stay awake. He doesn't grade anything. That's what the TAs are for and they kinda suck. Not the best professor. Try to avoid.
Very interesting class and lectures.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He was very unwilling to help students when they asked for assistance and his examples were extremely disturbing and inappropriate. Extremely sarcastic and automatically assumed that if a student did not understand something it was because they did not do the readings.
This class was really boring. Attendance is not mandatory but he flips a coin every class to see if you have a quiz so you pretty much have to go. Not very helpful and didn't repeat if you missed something. I would recommend taking PHIL100 with Jim Thomas. If his class is already full, wait a semester!
Interesting man. Class was interesting but do not play with your phone, computer, etc. in class, and DO NOT fall asleep. He will get mad. Also, takes a long time to grade assignments and curses regularly in class.
The funniest professor I've ever had. His humor is a bit dark, but it's not too bad. I would retake his class if I didn't have to pay for it. DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS. I had a quiz every Friday during discussion, so it wasn't random. I really didn't read a whole lot from the book, but sometimes the quizzes were on the readings.
Funny guy and knows his stuff. But when it comes to grading things he gets lazy, which has its pros and cons. He wasn't clear on the final paper which was a pain to deal with, and is easily irritated when you ask him to repeat something.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he flips a coin at the beginning of every class to tell if we will have a quiz based on reading- so you have to go to class. He clearly likes the subject, but I found him rude and unhelpful. He made you feel dumb for asking questions. I don't recommend him at all. I really disliked him! Hard grader, too!
Awesome class to take, lots of fun, not too hard.
Professor Ealick's course is mainly Socratic and the discussions are interesting. However, Ealick himself is not very helpful and is often rude and unsympathetic when approached with questions or concerns. He was not very helpful, and was quite intimidating. I found myself worried to ask questions out of fear that he would be rude to me.
Pretty simple clear cut class. For 150, Contemporary Moral Issues, you show up to lecture, take some light notes and do readings for homework (10 pagesweek, interesting to me). Quizzes are short and simple. I think he lectures well and is pretty funnyinteresting. For 152, Intro to Moral Theory, same stuff basically. I enjoyed the class overall
If you take Phil 150, the morality class, BEFRIEND THE TA! Heshe will grade all your quizzes, papers, and even the final paper. The TA control's your grade! You can show up and listen to the amusing lectures, but reading the book before the quiz may be fine as well. Overall easy class- do the work and have TA make corrections and you'll get an A.
For all of you out there that want an easy A for a humanity, don't take him. He isn't clear about what is need to get an A and didn't pass back the last test (there are 3) or the final paper. Didn't feel like arguing over my grades with him but will never think about taking another class with him. He's a really smart guy though.
He is smart, funny, easy going, and hippie-like. He is one of my favorite professors that I have had since starting school. He's also really laid back. He doesn't or rarely ever writes anything on the board so you'll have to listen to him carefully when taking notes. He also doesn't structure his lecture to a tee but that's fine. Awesome class :)
Your grade consists of weekly reading quizzes, 2 short writing projects, and 1 longer final paper. The workload itself isn't difficult. What is difficult is that there is little clarity on what we are being graded on in our papers. I think As on papers are hard to come by in this class.
Homework was often interesting. Fair. Maybe a little flighty but knowledgeable.
This is my first semester at UMBC, and prof. Ealick is one of my favorites! His lectures are always very interesting; never a dull moment. There are easy weekly quizzes in discussion, 2 short writing assignments, and 1 final paper. BE-FRIEND THE TA to get a good grade. His class sparked an interest in philosophy in me that I never thought I had.
2 exams and 1 paper. Read the articles and he will discuss them in class. He was slow to grade the exam and paper, but he was fair grader.
Seems like a cool professor at first, but was not accessible outside of class at all. His instructions for the assignments are "intentionally vague", but he clearly has a specific expectation of what he wants you to write for the assignments, even though he does not explain them at all. Be careful. I had a pretty bad experience with him.
Ealick is really funny and his lectures are interesting. He's disorganized, but he makes up for it in lecture. There are quizzes in discussion, 2 short papers, and 1 long final paper. Never go on your phone or interrupt him (especially when he's about to get to the point). Still participate and ask questions; he's interested in everyone's thoughts.
Professor Ealick is genuinely knowledgable about philosophy. He jumps around a bit when giving lectures, but overall wants to make sure his students understand the material. This class is worth taking, but make sure to read over your notes before each class. Ealick is unfair in terms of pop quizzes and if you aren't prepared, it'll knock your grade
Aside from the interesting material, this class was awful. The professor is rather arrogant and is terrible about posting grades when he says he will. I still haven't gotten back my last exam despite him saying that he'd have it up over 2 weeks ago. He's passionate about philosophy but his snapping at students and lack of returning emails ruined it
I loved his class, he's a great funny guy. Go to lecture, listen and take notes and you'll get an A
Professor Ealick is a charismatic individual. He makes lots of jokes, yet some come off as needlessly edgy or crude. Nonetheless, he is very passionate about the material. If you show up and do the readings, you can pass easily. Strict on grading, and exams would have no scores higher than a 92 but none lower than a 70. Randomly gives quizzes.
The class had about 20 people in it. You have to delve deep into the readings. Coursework was graded consistently, the criteria is basically that you demonstrate you understand the material for a B, and an A means you demonstrate a philosophical jump onto deeper analysis. Loved the class. He is not intimidating, you just cant BS him.
Sometimes the lectures were boring, sometimes not! Taking Prof. Ealick again this coming spring. My main issue was the TAs graded our work, and one TA graded much harder than the other. I felt as if there wasn't much communication between the professor and the TAs.
Ealick is great and makes class fun. He gives lectures from his head instead of presenting slides so writing down important info is on you. The class itself was great and very interesting; I would strongly recommend it. The discussion section is with a TA where you take a quiz each week. Other than that there is two short papers and one long.
Terrible at getting grades back, never writes anything on the board so lectures are confusing sometimes, tough grader Too hard and too much stress for an intro class, I would not take this again ever
He's very knowledgeable and does great at lecturing, but if you need a visual to learn, you're not going to get it. Personally, I don't like him too much, I think he has a bit of an ego, but he's certainly not a bad guy. He's a tough grader, make sure you have all the info you need but not TOO much or he'll complain about that too.
I think hes pretty unprofessional. Not only are his jokes kinda really rude sometimes, but he also just creeps me out. He always wears jeans that he lets sag low and hes also always got sweat stains on his chest even if its 50 degrees out. Definitely wouldnt feel comfortable going to his office hours. Other than that, the class was fine.
You have to go to every class because he lectures without the use of powerpoint or the board, so you have to pay attention. However, that is easy to do because he keeps the lecture interesting and engaging with his stories, amazing humor, and examples. Take lecture notes and you'll do fine on any quiz and exam. He grades fairly and is accessible.
Cool dude; really chill and funny and makes lectures really interesting and you're sure not to doze off. Make sure you do well on the weekly quizzes; there mostly just a few questions on the definitions of the topics covered in class. For essays, make sure to back up your claim and be detailed and straightforward.
Not an easy A for a 100 Lvl class. Class itself is easy, but grading is arbitrary, with few assignments. Got points taken off final paper for things he didn't mention in instructions. He was mad when I pointed them out. Got points back, but I had to argue and he was toxic about it the whole time. Disappointed, because he was a funny guy. Not worth.
I'm in my final year at UMBC and Ealick is the worst professor I've had. His pop quizzes are unfair, he uses profanity far too often, and he was rude to students. He snapped at people for simple questions and accused me of plagiarism with no evidence. It's a shame because the material was interesting and he often gave good lectures. Don't take him.
Get ready for pop quizzes and be specific while answering the pop quizes as he takes points off unfairly. I took his class thinking to boost my GPA because it was 100 level class but it was lot harder than any programming class I took here at UMBC. Avoid him at any cost.
Lecture heavy, good attendance and detailed note taking are mandatory to do well on the weekly quizzes. Points are deducted for the most frivolous of reasons, and his TA's are very slow at grading and updating BB. There are three essays and you get to choose which topic to write about, but the final essay is worth the most points.
Tough grader. But he expects students to be understanding when he doesn't return half of the grades until the end of the semester. This leaves students stuck if they do not like a grade they received, because they have no more opportunities to make changes and bring their grade up.
horrible. take phil100, not 152, if you want an easy arts credit. just oof.
This class takes more work than you would think. He grades the essays very hard and the pop quizzes include very specific questions from lectures. He promises to have assignments graded time and time again and ends up grading them last minute. Not a fan.
Professor Ealick was hilarious. He plays off the energy from the class. He tries to balance the sophistication of the material with modern references mixing with some profanity and edginess. His end of the class paper is really when you can meet with him outside of class and discover that he truly cares about each students learning.
He was fine. Nothing great. Some positives- It is a fairly average class, not much work. His humor is great, always enjoyed the actual lecture. Negatives- Grading, just as others say. There is not a great indication of how to actually study. There is no book, only readings and class notes. He doesn't write notes, you write what he is speaking.
Absolutely hated this class. It's good if you like logic, bad if you like language, even though it's called Philosophy of Language. His sense of humor is degrading to students and makes you feel bad for asking questions over email. In person is fine, though. He grades rather high while having confusing quizzes that cover things not in the lecture.
His class was lecture heavy and there was around 15+ pages of reading to do before each class. The readings were often confusing but weren't really necessary until you do the unit quiz and essay. His lectures were boring but if you participate it's fine. He is an easy grader and is lenient in working with individual students. Overall a chill prof.
Great professor would 100% recommend! He made lectures fun and engaging. This class was very enjoyable to take but if you don't like writing it may not be the best fit. Besides that he is super understanding and tries his best to grade papers in a somewhat timely manner so that you know how you're doing in the course and what to do to improve.
Professor Ealick's lectures are amazing. This course was the most interesting I encountered, and prof makes the content engaging. Must blog 5 times per week, biweekly quizzes, and 4 papers. Prof's only flaw is that he doesn't grade!!!! The agony of waiting until finals week to receive grades was unacceptable. Beware unless confident in writing!
He is really funny and a great teacher. I enjoyed how he connected the topics to daily life and other funny similarities. He is a very lenient grader and as long as you are listening to what is going on in class, you can do great on the quizzes and assignments.
There are three papers, weekly quizzes and discussion posts that you have to do for this class. Overall I think it's a pretty easy class and Professor Ealick gives good metaphors and stories to help explain the concepts being taught. He cares about his students and is accessible outside of class!
Professor Ealick is a great professor and is very good at what he does. He is very understanding and gives great feedback, I would totally recommend taking this class because it was very enjoyable. Be aware that there is a lot of reading and note taking for this class. The assignments are fairly easy and he is very fair when grading.
Prof. Ealick is genuinely one of my fave professors I've had at UMBC. He's super funny and a very entertaining lecturer. He takes a while getting grades back, but is lenient on deadlines for papers, and often pushes back due dates. If I have room for an AH elective in my schedule, he'll be one one of the top picks.
I took Greg Ealick for Philosophy of Mind, and this class was very interesting for me. I believe upper-level philosophy courses in general require a fair level of interest in the material, but Greg Ealick does a great job of getting the class's attention through humor and an obvious breadth of knowledge of the material. He can come off as arrogant.
Professor Ealick's class was not hard. He's not a hard grader, but his ways of teaching may be old school. Unknown amount of quizzes, and 3 very easy papers no exams. Will not allow make-ups unless you provide a sick note or something of the sort. He's kind and funny during lecture. Important to pay attention and do the readings for your papers.
First PHIL class I've taken, but was still able to understand the material and engage in class. It's part lecture, part discussion. Read the material and be ready to make comments/ask questions in class. Loved how he added humor and made the class laid back.
I found the lectures super engaging and the concepts interesting. Sometimes his comments would be jarring, but they're meant to stop students from spacing-out, I think. Super slow grader, incredibly so. But he is aware of this and gives extensions. Knock out the 4 essays in the beginning, show up for pop quizzes, and it'll be your easiest class.
He hates all forms of technology and will snap if he sees any. His lectures were okay and the workload was quite easy, but you will get almost 0 to no grades back before the end of the semester. If you do all ur work early you can get it out of the way. He cares abt what he's lecturing and doesn't seem mean or condescending.
He is very engaging when he lectures and his class was by far one of my favorites this semester. He is a bit slow on grading but he is very lenient. Hands down one of the easiest classes i've taken, just make sure to go to his lectures because the pop quizzes are based around his lectures.
Professor Ealick is my favorite professor in college. His lectures were interesting and engaging, I felt that I learned a lot and also there was very little work. He does not take attendance but he does give very easy pop quizzes which are instead of attendance. I also take scientific reasoning online with him and that is great as well.
Amazing lectures!! Made the class participate in a way that caused students to challenge previous beliefs. Every class was interesting. While attendance isn't mandatory, skipping can result in quizzes being more difficult.
He wasn't a bad professor he just takes way too long to grade. He gives random pop quizzes so look over notes before every class. I got a B because I did bad on all the quizzes but I got As on all the essays which were really easy. Not too much work and overall an easy class.
The professor has a great sense of humor and connects concepts to real life. While grading can be tough, attending lectures and using tools like unstuck AI for study prep makes the class manageable. Worth taking if you enjoy writing.
had this prof for PHIL100, PHIL380, and PHIL478; besides being a very slow grader at times and only basing grades off a small handful of assignments, the assignments are relatively straightforward if you put in any effort and he's very funny and very nice with students
professor ealick is very funny and nice towards his students. he does not take attendance, but will give pop quizzes every now and then, which are a bit difficult if u don't attend lectures. grade is based on those pop quizzes + a few papers. he is a very slow grader, but is fair and makes up for it by extending deadlines. very understanding!
