Clear, concise, straightforward, and students well for tests. No surprises. Obvious he loves his students and teaching. Probably one of the best professors I've ever had.
This guy rocks. If you want to be an econ major, I don't care if you have to gnaw your own foot off to get in, take this class. Greg Ellis seems to always teach it. He's clear, concise, treats you like a grown up, and has a good sense of humor. What more could you ask for?
Go to lecture and you don't need to read the book. He is engaging and its an easy class to get a good grade in if u pay attention. Also, u don't have to spend a lot of time outside of class on the material if you go to class and quiz section. Its a good class.
ridiculously easy class. you can choose to attend lecture or read the book, either one is adequate. I recommend attending class, it was pretty interesting, he is funny and uses very good examples. test questions are almost exactly what was in lecture, just with different numbers.
boring lectures. read the book or go to class but dont bother doing both.
Lecture was sometimes confusing but read the textbook, go over problems, take advantage of CLUE /TA office hours and you should be just fine.
lecture is ellis repeating the book to you almost verbatim. go to CLUE it really helps. classes can be a bit dull if you've read the book beforehand, but the concepts are interesting. only 5-6 quizzes and two exams determine your gpa in the class so be careful during tests.
ellis is awkward but in a really funny way. his golf jokes are enjoyable. the book is completely unnecessary if you go to lecture. he dumbs things down so its a pretty easy class. if you do the practice problems in the back of the book it will help you on the quizzes.
class was pretty much boring, grades base on 1 midterm and final so dont screw up on those!
Good lecturer. Hard to focus at times though. If you attend CLUE sessions and office hours with your TA, you should do well.
This class is a fairly easy one.He lecture material is right out of the book,so its best to read the book before hand.I only went to class about half the time and I got a 3.5 in the class. He can be pretty boring, but read the book and you'll be fine. If you understand what you read, going to lecture doesn't make a difference. If you didn't,then go!
I loved this class! Professor Ellis is very likable, he pretty much repeats the text book verbatim. The examples he uses are the same as on the test. Do the homework even though you don't turn it in, the short answer problems are direct copies of those problems. Everyone should take this class!
ellis takes getting used to. he is definately a bit arrogant. but he is pretty funny and an excellent lecturer. he makes the concepts clear. i agree with everyone else that he follows the book closely, but i wouldnt say just do one or the other. they supplement each other. but if you had to pick one, definately go to lectures.
I had his lecture at 8:30 in the morning which made it really difficult to get through. Both your midterm and your final are worth 40% of you grade, so don't screw up on those. Ellis wasn't my favorite teacher and the class definitly brought down my GPA. :(
Honestly TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. A class that's based on 2 tests is risky. He actually put a problem on the midterm (worth 40% of the test) that he had never gone over and he just expected us to get it. This class should not be as difficult or as stressful as he makes it. TAKE SOMONE ELSE FOR ECON 200; there are many better proffesors for it.
I would definitely take someone else if it were an option. The material itself is fairly easy, but because of questions like the one on the midterm it was much more difficult to get a good grade than it was to actually understand. He also went on numerous calculus "asides" that where about as useful as they were boring.
Material? Easy. Tests? Way too hard. I don't mind there being two tests for a total grade, but one question should not be worth 30 points out of 100.
the class is easy and material is fairly interestly, but that man is so boring. never go to class, just read the book, and pay attention in q section. save your time
The class was easy, but Ellis is full of himself, I went to the first half of the lectures but then realized going to class was not necessary and got a 3.8, the grading scale is a bit tough though
Prof Ellis is a very good lecturer. He made every topic clear enough, even if you hadn't done any of the reading or assignments. He also stressed the key ideas and would repeat them just so you could catch up on note-taking. The review lectures were especially effective for the tests. His office hours were just too damn early though.
Excellent professor. I had a great time in his class. His lectures were very fascinating and the concepts introduced in the class were very interesting. I really do not understand the complaints about the tests, I thought they were very straightforward and easy.
nice guy and everythin, but goes off on a tangent and its difficult to understand what he's talking about at times in class. not necessary to go to class, real boring.
Ellis is a great prof. All the haters on here are just lazy. If you work hard in his class, which means studying for quizzes (20% of grade) and tests (midterm: 35% and final 45%) you will do absolutely fine. He goes EXACTLY by the book so there is no excuse not to do the reading--read and take notes and actually try in this class you'll be fine
Do not take Econ 200 with Ellis! All of the other Econ 200 classes stop at chapter 8 or ten for the final. However, Ellis decides to cram in way too many chapters and goes all the way to chapter 13. In addition, his pompous attitude makes him unapproachable.
He's a great professor. Don't listen to other negative comments!!! Even though the other class only goes to Chapter 8, the other class has wayyyyy harder tests! If you do the problem sets from the book, you will do absolutely fine. And thanks to Ellis' crystal clear explanations, this class is really not hard at all.
Pretty good teacher and a good overall class. Lectures could get a little boring at times, but Ellis is a solid professor who answers questions clearly and gives solid examples. Tests weren't too bad, all the past midterms and finals were available to study from.
first of all you the book is horrible, i took IB econ and i compared the book we use to the IB one? man... far off. I suggest you attend class if you have to take econ with him, cause the book wont do.
He wrote the textbook (along with Silberburg), so when he gives examples, he gives the same ones from that book, which isn't much help if you didn't get that example... He is arrogant, kind of funny, not extremely helpful. My TA wasn't helpful at all when I needed it, and the class got significantly harder the second half of the quarter.
He is one of the best professors I've had so far. The people that are complaining about him are the people who choose to sleep in and skip lecture. His lectures are crucial to the understanding of the subject and I suggest going to every single one! Its true that he seems too confident, but he is a great teacher! Definately take him! Tests are easy
i feel like they use ellis to purge out prospective econ or business students. super boring; full of useless personal anecdotes. hes not too hard, but i would never recommend him
OMG his review for previous exams sucked so bad as he just read through all the answers... he writes a whole bunch of numbers on the screen but he doesnt right hows it important. i dont suggest him and his problem sets compared to the final are completely different
everything is bull**** to consider. jus one thing. You won't get wt the textbook is talking about; it doesn't help you in the way a "textbook" is supposed to be. What else I have to comment? *recent comments below are valid.
Get Clark as your TA he rocks!
If you come to class and pay attention, there is no need to read the textbook- he wrote it, so he repeats the same examples and concepts in lecture. Also, a lot of the questions from his problem sets appear on the midterm/final. Although he is ridiculously arrogant, he always answers everyone's questions. Get Clark as your TA and you'll be golden.
Ellis went too fast for me and didn't really answer student's questions well. I was disappointed with the class. Study off previous exams and try to get Emre Aylar as your TA. He's legit! The CLUE review for the final was the only one that helped me. I got a 3.8 pretty much because my TA was so helpful, so get Emre and go to office hours!
He is a pretty decent teacher, although his answers to questions are not always that helpful. I had an excellent TA, Shamma, who was very helpful and made concepts crystal enough which really helped me do well in the end. Make sure to get a good TA, have Shamma if he is one of them.
Not a bad professor. Lectures can be a little boring but I did learn a lot. His quizzes and exams are fair (some of the questions on the final were taken straight from the practice final) - practice problems from the book are helpful. Calculus asides are hopelessly convoluted they aren't tested - I ignored them and still got a 4.0. Take good notes.
Good prof. He is interested in Econ and hopes you learn a lot. I would take him again. Just be careful you get a decent TA. Also, he doesn't fail to mention he went to Berkeley
There's so much to cover, and sometimes he goes too fast when explaining stuff so you just get lost. Tests are ridiculous--only about 5 questions so if you miss one you're screwed. Midterm and Final had 10 questions on there. I studied my ass off in this class and did okay but I would say if you can avoid taking this prof., most likely do so.
Ellis really knows what he is talking about. Some lectures are kind of boring but he likes to think he is funny and makes some jokes to livin things up. He is a great teacher and seems like a nice guy. Exams are like the practice exams and if you read the chapter and do the practice problems you'll do well except no curve and final is 45% of grade
apparently hes pretty good for lower division classes but this guy is tough. funny in a nerdy econ way of course. youll always get one question on your test from practice homework but the class is not curved and my midterm and final were both 50%. You get a single note sheet. if you suck at calculus thats too bad KNOW YOUR CALC
boring lectures
Such boring lectures, fell asleep half the time I couldn't concentrate. Explanations are unclear and he often goes off on "calculus asides" which are great if you understand calculus, not so great if you don't...Having a good T.A. for this class is everything if you want a chance at doing somewhat well.
I recommend going to lectures even though they are very boring. Quiz sections have about 5 quizzes total with the lowest dropped. Class material progressively got tougher throughout the quarter.
Very interesting class. Make sure to read the ch. before coming to lecture. He teaches from the book and expands on examples but doesn't always define details. Quiz section is mandatory with pop quizzes half the days. Test questions come from defs, theories/models, graphs and problem sets. Ellis is very amusing and made microeconomics lots of fun.
Ellis is awfully dull to listen to, especially early in the morning. The only visual aid he uses in lectures are occasional definitions he writes on overhead projectors, which makes it hard to pay attention and grasp the concepts. The pace was way too fast; we covered way more materials than other professors! do what you can to avoid Ellis.
Good professor overall, everything is very fair. The only thing that's a bit weird is the grade scale, which is pretty harsh (not sure if it's his, might just be econ dept's). Got a 3.8 but felt like I understood the material perfectly... Oh well. He will go through more material than the other profs, but as a result you will learn more.
It was sort of interesting, but hard to follow along cause he uses long extended examples. Lectures were very boring but quiz section and clue helped the most. At least one question from the practice problem sets are on the exams. Read the text book and go to qz is the best advice.
Ellis was a fine lecturer, he wrote the book so he knows what he's talking about. It's fast paced at points but just keep up with reading and do the problem sets because quizzes are based off of them. TA's grade everything so make sure to get a good one. The average GPA is a 2.8... I got a 3.5 but I studied harder for this than anything else.
is knowledgeable about the topic but covers a lot of material very quickly and not very clearly. comes across as kind of arrogant at times. the only reason i passed the class was because i had an awesome TA.
Go to lectures and do the questions on the textbook and previous exams. Most of the questions on the tests will be exactly the same.
i took this class as a prereq for business, but ellis made me fall in love with econ and i've stuck with it ever since. amazing that a senior lecturer would stoop back down to the intro classes. if you read the book, you don't have to go to his 8:30 lectures, but he keeps them interesting. answers ALL your questions, take him over the TA options
his class is hard. since he is the author of the textbook, he just assume that students already know the materials. So its just totally your responsibility to catch up the lectures
very organized and tells us what to expect. work hard, do the practice problems and previous exams and you should be fine.
No intellectual vitality. Like high school teacher. That shows why he is just a lecturer....
Pretty clear. Lectures on what's going to be on the quiz section and the test. Goes over the book very well and fully understood. Kind of boring but that is also economics sometimes.
The grading system in his class is unreasonable.
Horrible. Goes too fast, unclear, and speaks in sophisticated terms to teach simple concepts written in the book. Provides useless material during class, and the book isn't of any help either. Expects you to know everything. Answers in the back don't serve any assistance at all. Made Econ a horrible class; don't see any of this as beneficial.
I think if the lecture wasnt so big it could've been a much more understandable and better class overall
Read the book before lectures, go to class to solidify what you read (he lectures pretty much straight out of the book), and you'll be fine. I was able to get 100% on midterm and final and easily 4.0 the class. His tests are extremely easy if you understand the concepts.
Professor Ellis was a great lecturer. You only meet twice a week so they are long and can be boring. There is no HW that you have to turn in only five quizzes throughout the quarter. After taking this class from Professor Ellis, he gave me a passion to pursuer economics farther. I definitely recommend Professor Ellis.
Ellis is one of the best professors I've had! You definitely have to read the book because he basically repeats what the book says except he goes more in depth. Econ is undoubtedly one of my favorite classes so far!
Awful teacher, very full of himself and seems to favor only those with a natural talent in economics. Is never clear during lecture and the midterm/final are hard because the book doesn't accurately reflect what he wants you to know, and what he wants you to know doesn't make any sense.
Greg is hilarious, and tries to make things interesting and on our level of interest. Kind of a snob, but pretty good to listen to.
Ellis is a outstanding professor that he explains everything clearly on class. If you read the book before the lecture and attend all the LC and QZ on time the course is pretty easy and I got a 4.0 in his class.
Ellis is a great professor and a good lecturer. He gets a little carried away in his love for Calculus, but it's not mandatory to know, and he doesn't hold you responsible for it, so it's really more comical than anything. I recommend him as an Econ prof. He makes Econ very straightforward and understandable.
Ellis is by far the best lecturer I've had at the UW. Is very clear and gives very good explanations with solid examples, incredibly funny guy too so that helps! Moves kinda fast but stops for you if you just ask a question. Makes his expectations clear. Didn't grade on a curve, but has a generous grading scale so it works out! Highly recommend!!
Alright guy just goes too fast and makes simple concepts harder than needed unfair tests dont take him for econ.
Hes a pretty engaged professor, and easy to listen to. However, he is very technical in his explanations and never uses graphs or anything during lecture or on tests, which made it hard for me. Also, all essay type questions for tests, no multiple choice. The best lecture of the quarter was the one that the T.A.'s led. Nice professor, hard class
Horrible professor all around. Office hours at 7 AM, lectures extremely fast paced, didn't seem to care if students understood material, TA's were unhelful and barely spoke english. He would have the TA's review one chapter in quiz section and then you would have a quiz on a completely different chapter.
I'd highly recommend attending lecture. I didn't have much trouble staying awake since he is a fairly engaging person. Quiz sections are very helpful as well. Not a bad class.
I think most of it depends on the TA you get. So pray for a good one. His lectures were interesting but long. Make sure to read the text before class since his lectures come straight out of the book.
This is a very good professor. He really knows what he is talking about and is interesting. The Quiz sections weren't that helpful. But if you read the book and do the practice problems there should be no problem with the class.
One of my favorite courses, despite being at 8:30. He wrote the textbook and lectures almost word-for-word, so you don't even have to read it. Concepts were clear and he wrote down important points and definitions so you didn't miss them while taking notes.
Horrible professor! He has little interest in the our success, and only cares about making money off of selling his textbooks. He made us purchase brand new books for $120 in order to get the online access code, but we rarely used the website. Now, I'm stuck with this book because next quarter's students also need to buy new copies. Unethical!
Great professor, pretty funny guy and interesting to listen to. His tests are very fair and if you do the readings (there isn't even that much reading), you'll be fine.
He always made me want to sleep. No enthusiasm. No interest. Hard exam. gpa that students got depends too much on how ur midterm and final exams are!
The course gets really hard and intense at the last few weeks.
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. If you read the material, go to lecture, and do the practice problems, you'll come out with an A. Great professor!
Ellis's lectures are quite fast-speed. It was quite easy at the start, but things get faster and harder at the end. His lectures are almost based on the textbook, so it is necessary to read through the book carefully. However, Ellis is really a great lecturer, and I never regret taking his class. Enjoy!
I work hard and get good grade but still not a big fan of him!
HIS LECTURES MOVE VERY QUICKLY AND ARE VERY HARD TO FOLLOW. YOU WILL HAVE TO PUT IN A LOT OF YOUR OWN WORK IN ORDER TO DO WELL IN THIS CLASS. HE DOESN'T REALLY PREPARE YOU FOR EXAMS, YET THE EXAMS ESSENTIALLY DETERMINE YOUR GRADE IN THE CLASS. IF YOU CAN TAKE A COURSE WITH A PROFESSOR OTHER THAN ELLIS, I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO THAT.
best professor ever. talks way too fast as if he thinks you already know ur stuff
great professor and a must if you are taking Econ 200, has 8:30 classes which is unfortunate
Ellis is a fantastic teacher. He is practically a wizard. Textbook is recommended but I didn't read any of it and I did just fine. If you attend the lectures and take decent notes you too will become a wizard.
Good professor. And definitely better than the other Econ professor from what I have heard. The first half was great but after the midterm he kind of dropped off. Didnt explain a lot of what he taught and went through it really fast. Quiz section helps some but I had to read the book a lot to understand it better since the lectures didnt do much..
He is a good professor. His explanation is pretty clear and clarifies a lot of concepts in the reading. He cowrote the book so basically in lecture, he is the talking book. Fair exams and he likes to recycle questions from the past. Study his exams, do the readings, and you will perform solid in the class.
Not very approachable but he was good at explaining things except he goes too fast during lectures. Exams are based off of past exams so study those and key concepts for the required exam and you should be good!
Natural Resource Economics was great with him. Super knowledgeable, very helpful and clear, and his exams were more than fair. I think the lower ratings he is getting are from students in intro classes who are having a hard time, and granted he probably cares less about those classes. Attend lecture, take notes, and you will succeed.
Decent professor - he was a lot better than the class I switched out of. Easy enough to understand and interesting to listen to during lecture. I wouldn't rate him as the most helpful professor I've had at UW but he posts past exams and if you study those it's no problem.
Pretty good proff. Lectures can drone on, especially at 830 AM. If you read the textbook you should do alright. Not too hard to pull a 3.5 I would expect a 4.0 unless you love Econ
Not much to say. Great class, great professor.
This is a hard class and gets boring within a week especially at 8 AM. Ellis teaches alright, you have to read the book but his tests are hard! If you miss one question that could be -30 points right there. He curved the class on a 2.5 so I would recommend someone else.
As long as you attend lectures, understand all the concepts he talks about and do all the practice problems he gave you, you will do very well. The quizzes and tests are not hard. However, the textbook is expensive and somehow useless.
Good teacher, luv him
If you go to lecture and pay attention it isn't that hard. Professor is easy to hear and understand. He gives nice real world examples to reinforce material. Great class good professor.
He taught really fast. he said exactly the same from the book even the examples are the same from the textbook.
Professor Ellis explains the theories very clearly and I think his lectures are pretty interesting.
Ellis is a great at presenting material. 500 students in our class and he still answered questions. HW is online and trivial. Tests are easy if you go to class. He goes over old tests that are basically identical to what you'll get. Ellis is the only professor that wants students to succeed that I've had so far. Very boring class, but good prof.
Ellis is a great lecturer. I found him to be incredibly helpful and interesting. Some of the lectures can go on and be rather boring but he definitely tries to make it engaging. I found the class very easy. To get a good grade you really just have to do the work he assigns, it's as simple as that.
You have to fight to stay awake in this class, and it's a struggle when it's an hour and a half long at 8:30 in the morning. I got a 100% hw and quiz average with a 93.75% on the midterm; dunno what my grade on the final was but I'm pretty sure the grading got messed up since I came out with a 3.6, which was way lower than I was hoping for.
Great professor! Great lecturer. Class is pretty straightforward. You get what you put in. Do the work and you'll definitely pull a good grade. Pro tip: Do the (ungraded) assigned problem sets which are the review questions in the textbook. They always appear on exams. Also, try to get your hands on as many released exams as possible.
Very organized lectures, easy to follow. Was very clear about expectations for exams. A+ professor.
Just go to lectures and read the book, you will do fine. Just go over your notes for tests, it's all there.
Ellis teaches the material really well. He uses the textbook he helped to write for his class so you really need to know everything in the book, but because he wrote it, he covers just about all of it in class.
He is a good professor. Gives tricky questions on exams and has heavy weightage on the exams. I lost one question on the final with 100% whole class got 3.5. Teaches directly from the textbook. Will make only a small difference if you dont ever go to class lol
Class was pretty solid overall. Ended up with a 3.8 with little work.
The home works and tests were straight forward, just go to the CLUE/EUB tutoring and watch Khan Academy videos to learn the material, because his book is terrible, and he isn't great at presenting the material.
Class was very well organized and Ellis presents the material in a very clear and easy to follow manner. I never opened the book and put very little effort into the class and ended up with a 3.8.
ridiculous tests and draconian grading. lectures at the worst possible time and extremely inconvenient office hours. would not recommend taking this class if you desire to save your GPA.
The concepts are easy, however there was only one midterm and one final , and only a few questions on the midterm. I knew how to do one of the 20 point questions-made a small mistake and ended up getting a 50% on concepts I completely understood. No room for errors!!!! if you're a good test taker, no worries.
Great professor, although his teaching style isn't always clear. If you are a visual learner, don't recommend it.... unless if you are an auditory learner. Concepts were confusing and class was too long. Overall, I regret taking his class. Wish I had a different professor because econ is very interesting and he made it confusing.
Ellis knows what he's taking about and tries hard to teach you the material, but doesn't do a very good job. His explanations, especially mathematical ones, are brief and unclear. He also wrote the textbook, so it's equally unclear. Be sure to study old homework, ungraded problems, and old tests. Some questions reappear.
He does a really good job at explaining the concepts and answering questions about them if people are confused. There's an online assignment about every week. I had 4 pop quizzes in quiz section, they were all out of 10 points. Theres also midtermfinal review the lecture before the test that helps a lot
Professor Ellis is very knowledgable in his field. He knows the material very well and his lectures are very interesting. His office hours are at an unreasonable time but I never once had to go. His class is fairly easy in the first half but escalates very fast in the second half. Tests and quizzes are pretty easy as long as you put an effort in it
Ellis lectures directly from the textbook and uses the same example problems. It was very confusing to follow- he talks super fast. Definitely do the online homework and pray for a good quiz section, that's key to doing well in the class. Study previous midtermsexams because they are almost identical (he just changes the numbers). Got a 3.4
not really helpful. expect students to know way too much for intro level. id rather recommend taking econ 200 with someone else if you want to receive better grade
lecture is confusing and the midterm is not about what he taught in class. Bad teaching skills
Ellis knows his stuff for this intro econometrics course but he is not that great of a lecturer. His lectures are very unorganized and the myEconLab is nothing like the tests. Best way to practice for this course is to find someone with previous midterms/finals and just review them until you get the concepts down. Back of the book problem helps
Actually, Greg Ellis is good lecturer, I know many people don't like his style of teaching. Material is a bit difficult but if you really learned and understand what he taught in class and what's on the textbook, you will do fine in the exams. One of the best and most challenging classes at UW. But I really appreciate this class and I got an A.
Microeconomics with Ellis was not too challenging. The textbook was helpful for the first few chapters. Lectures are not recorded so attendance is mandatory, since he covers material which is not always in the textbook. Ellis is humorous and passionate. Quiz section is easy, although there are often quizzes. I highly recommend this class.
Dinosaur technologically. Does not post any grades anywhere so you better cross your fingers that you do well. Overall the material is interesting, the only downfall is that he co-wrote the book so he doesn't give many other examples other than the ones in the book. Would take again though.
Really enjoyed the subject matter, and I thought that Ellis did a good job of relating it in simple terms. I got essentially all I needed from lectures, but the textbook was helpful when I needed more details. His office hours are 7:30am, if that's too tough keep that in mind
Oh man, the class period was long, surviving his lectures in the morning was difficult, and his office hours are so early. Though I would recommend him, because most of the stuff he covers is in the book as well, word-by-word. Most of the problem sets he gives are similar to his pop quizzes and exam questions. Having an awesome TA makes it easier.
The class and the subject is interesting to me, and Professor Ellis is very knowledgeable in the area of Economics. The lectures were very early in the morning and two hours long so a friend to talk to a little bit during class helps or coffee as well. His lectures weren't available outside of class so attendance is mandatory.
Ellis's Econ 200 is very hard. He go through a lot of materials very quickly for each class and we don't even have any time to process. He will never repeat anything unless being asked. Some points are really hard to understand but he talks really fast about them. Also lack of responsibility. Ends class almost 1 hour early every time.
Must attend all lectures; very hard to do well if you don't know the material shown in class. 1 assigned textbook is useless. 2nd textbook with select articles are all found online so no need to spend extra money on it. Practice tests and hw definitely help for test preparation. Lectures sometimes don't make sense and Ellis skips over explanations.
The biggest issue I had with this class was that Professor Ellis did not make lectures available online, and talked way too quickly to take good notes. On top of that, Ellis is not very engaging and I found it hard to pay attention.I learned most from completing the homework assignments on MyEconlab and doing the practice problems in the textbook.
Best professor I have ever had for economics. He is very intelligent on the subjects he talks about. Don't miss lectures. Make sure you take good notes. Do the practice exams you are given because they are extremely similar to the actual exams. Really easy to get a good grade if you just show up to class and pay attention. Absolutely loved him.
Ellis is the reason I considered majoring in econ. Yes, he is old-fashioned (you HAVE to go to class, he does everything on a white-board, no recorded classes, and textbook lecture-style), but he is so clear. He will always provide an example and slow down if you just raise your hand and ask. Great dry humor. Early office hours @7:30am. LOVE HIM!
Not a very engaging professor, but he tries his best and is very straightforward with teaching concepts and what you have to know for the exams. That being said, there's also some catching up that has to be done on your own to truly master the concept cause his lectures can go rather fast. Grading is also quite lenient so it's not a bad class.
Make sure you go to class, he does not provide lecture notes online. He is old fashioned in that he uses the white boards to teach everything and your grade is made up of 1 midterm (40% of grade), the final (50% of grade), and online homework (10%). Good lecturer and made it clear what to expect on the exams.
I have no clue why people on here think Ellis is "so clear." He really isn't. He just writes up a bunch of jumbled equations up on the board that you've never seen before and gets feisty when someone tries to ask a clarifying question. Error-prone! You need to go to class and REALLY read the textbook to at least kind of understand the material.
I do not think Ellis is clear. Totally agree to the last person's comment. His lectures were boring. All he did was to copy formulas on the white board without explaining much. Most of the times you have to understand things by yourself and connect things you learnt together. But exams were easy. Make sure to do the practice exams. Find a good TA.
If you attend lecture regularly and do the practice questions given this class is cake. Concepts are easy to grasp with basic understanding of calculus and there is not a huge depth of material covered overall.
I agree with the last few comments about clarity. Ellis is really smart--and his class isn't THAT hard if you know calculus--but I definitely got the feeling that he didn't want to be stuck in a room full of college kids. Not very nice during early morning office hours. The TAs were really pleasant and helpful, though!
Greg Ellis is very clear with his lectures. He will usually tackle about 3 different types of problems per lecture, and tests you on exactly what he's writing on the board. He doesn't try to trick you with his exams: if you know how to do those problems, you'll do well in the class. You get notecards on exams as well (extremely helpful)!
Had Ellis for Econ 301 and 382. Easy professor if you keep these in mind: (1) do not miss lectures and write everything down (2) the practice exams contain 50% of the exam questions and everything is from lecture (3) T.A's are very helpful; don't bother asking Ellis for help (4) if friends have taken the course, ask for practice exams. Be Boundless
I don't think this Professor knows what he taught and what he didn't. Based on what he did this quarter, the content of final exam does not match his practiced exam and TA review session. He canceled too many class, even the last class before the final exam. So that we don't even know what the range of the final exam. Also, his class is boring.
He rarely shows up in class, so he didn't finish what we should learn. He has no idea of the where the class is at, and he needs to look at students notes to find out what he should teach. Clearly come with no preparation. TA section teaches most stuff, TA did much more work than him. His office hour is 7:15-8:15 am. No curve.
Worst prof Ive ever had. Doesnt care whether students actually learn. Always unprepared and doesnt remember what he has or has not taught yet. Uses a whiteboard which half the class cant see, cancelled 8 lectures, gave us no idea what would be on the final besides giving us 1 practice final. Hes just a mess. Awful.
Guys, just dont take a class from Professor Ellis. I took Econ 300 with him and he literally MISSED half of our lectures (just wasn't around), cancelled our midterm, gave out TWO homework sets, and overall just ghosted our class. If you are hoping to go far in Econ, avoid at all costs!
Decent professor, but very old fashioned - if you miss class, you're out of luck because he doesn't post any of the lecture material online. Lectures are interesting, but require you to be taking notes almost constantly. Exams are tough and *will* assign a majority of points to that one topic you didn't think was important. Use your notecard wisely
I don't know what class in person with him was like, but Ellis was one of the best online profs I had. He is very smart and it shows in how he can explain things very clearly and concisely. If you take notes, pay attention and make sure what he covers in lectures, you will be fine since exams are basically exactly what he goes over in lecture.
Great professor. He explains everything clearly in class so you won't spend too much time on self-learning after class. The exam questions are derived from teaching materials. It's easy to achieve a good result as long as you take notes of what he's covered in class. The project is a bit tricky but it's not that hard if you follow his instructions.
Online, he is a very mediocre professor. Reused lectures from the previous quarter, very little guidance and information about the midterm or anything. Watching the lectures and reading the textbook was fine and the material wasn't that difficult, but it felt like there wasn't a prof at all
He's a very good professor. Ellis taught very well and never made the exams tricky. Rest in Peace Professor.
