incredibly smart and knowledgable. his classes are fairly easy and interesting for biology classes and he also teachs environmental studies
very interesting and engaging teacher. He really cares about his students and what they are learning!
Very knowledgable guy, but slants all his teaching to the left. To be fair, he warns his students ahead of time, and as a liberal I really appreciated his comments. He grades fairly, recitation is a huge part of this class.

I had him as a poly sci professor at State, and he was very knowledgeable...definitely the type of person one would want to have in charge of a high-level government office - very wise.
Gangi is a great teacher, and obviously has a great passion and interest for what he teaches. I definitely reccommend taking one of his courses.
Dr.G is the bomb! Get to know him: very interesting and helpful. Knows how to make people understand environmental problems of the world. Somewhat liberal, but well balanced class.Coursepack was ok; some books were boring. Go to class. TA Review Sessions before midterm and final. They help A LOT.
This class, coral reef ecology, is all about going to the Virgin Islands during sring break. Gangi rocks, make sure you hear some of his travel stories. ^_^
Great person and a great teacher! If you get the chance to go on the Virgin Islands trip, it's amazing. He is passionate about what he teaches, and he is ALWAYS willing to help you understand class material or your own life. He makes learning so much fun.
Very passionate and well-informed about the subject, but not very well organized. It is difficult to understand what he is looking for on tests, and lectures are not very helpful. It is more important to do the readings and go to recitation, as they are a big part of the grade.
if you're a liberal, you will LOVE him. he's sooo enthusiastic about the subject, and has a way of relating the environment to EVERYTHING in your life. this class will make you angry at America, but it's worth taking so you'll be informed. relatively easy, lots of grades. even the projects and readings are fun. everyone should take this class.
Dr. Gangi is awesome! He knows so much about his subject area, and although some of the lectures can be dry, stick in there cause they all relate to something. He is so willing to help you with whatever you need. Take this class...it is one of the best at UNC!
I LOVED THIS CLASS!! Gangi is the best ever!
Gangi's class was interesting but there was way too much reading. His lectures are good but not very organized.
I loved this class! It really opens your eyes to a lot of issues in the world...more of a social science class than a hardcore (like chem) science. A lot of what he teaches seems obvious, but the way he ties things together and reveals truths is really outstanding! You'll have something due in recitation every week..but you get 4 credits. Take it!
Cool teacher, but I can only speak for the class b/c I didn't get to know him personally.Way too much reading and you'll find yourself not being able to catch up if you get behind.Attend and participate in recitations because that will help your grade. If you are interested in the environment and want to think deeply about it then take this class.

Greg Gangi is SERIOUSLY the man. Enst 35 is one of those classes that every person should take in their lives. Gangi is always available for questions/discussion. Likes to eat lunch with students on fridays. Recitation is where all the assignments are; mostly little ones, one big final paper. Lectures are super-interesting 90% of the time.
All of his lectures are good because he really believes what he says. Outside of class, he can be awkward, but in front of a large number of students he is very comfortable talking. He assigns lots of reading which is very beneficial to do, but it is possible to just read what you have time to and get by. I love the man!!
The class was incredibly interesting and helpful; however, they graded way too hard for the subject matter that we were dealing with.
amazing professor, incredible class. defintiely take him if at all possible.
I love this man- this was my favorite class this semester. very interesting and he's a really nice guy
ENST 201 and ENST 259 just fabulous! He is an amazing professor & simply a must-take! He also teaches a film seminar in the fall (ENST 204). It would be silly to graduate Carolina w/out a Gangi class (even if ENST it's not your major!)
Just like everyone else on here, I loved Gangi as a teacher. The class is focused on learning, not grades so they are pretty lenient with grading. He definitely seems like he is ranting sometimes but it shows that he is very very passionate about his teaching. One of those classes that challenges the way you see the world.
Great teacher and powerful lecturer. I feel I'm the only one to have negative experience in trying to contact him. 3 emails throughout the semester and no responses. But, learned a lot from the class, very intellectual, passionate, and educated guy. recommend the course.
Gangi is so inspiring, passionate, friendly, and intelligent- one of the smartest people I know. Lectures are fascinating and the class itself is not stressful at all. He adds to the course with personal stories from his world travels which make the lectures that much more interesting. This class is a must-take whether you're an ENST major or not!
Professor is greenwashed. Unwilling to hear opposing views.
Listen, I'm not an ENST major, so I'm not as head-over-heels for this class/prof as others seem to be. He's a good lecturer, initiates interesting discussion & is a nice guy. THE RECITATION IS RIDIC! Too much work! I realize it's 4 credit hours but it's ALOT. The content is interesting but hard to synthesize for exams & review sessions do not help.
Lots of reading, articles, 3 books, etc.
Dr. Gangi is an excellent lecturer, and the course is quite interesting. I enjoyed going to lecture. I did not, however, enjoy recitation. My TA was always late to class and late in returning papers. The class is very easy on the whole; recitation, however was too much tedious work (3 assignments, a group project, a class presentation, quizzes).
Great professor!
If you do the work, it isn't hard to make a good grade. Lots of reading for lecture and recitation has assignments due every week. Exams are essays/short answer and are graded pretty hard. There are opportunities for extra credit though! Lectures can be a little odd and unfocused, but usually pretty interesting
Greg Gangi was a great professor to learn from- very knowledgeable. The lectures can get long- esp. if you're tired- because he talks slowly and keeps it dim, but the content is important and fun to discuss. There is PLENTY of reading (mostly for the recitation), but the discussion in class is fun and really teaches you a lot.
He's a really cool guy. Tells a lot of stories and is really passionate about his subject. He's easy to understand and is very clear about what he expects you to know.
Gangi is a great lecturer and the class was very enjoyable. The readings were manageable and very interesting. However, the recitation was more work than I expected. Would recommend taking the class because you learn a-lot about issues facing the environment and the world.
This class was incredibly boring and the recitations required way too much work. Multiple group projects were required throughout the semester. Readings before every class. It wasn't worth it at all.
He uses outdated information and there were sadly many hungry students in my class who did not notice the lack of information or didn't bother to research and ate his words right up. If you keep up with current events and have general environmental studies information, you will realize this and be disgusted with his unorganized lectures.
Greg is a great professor. Almost all of his lectures are done entirely without any notes or powerpoints. The class is a lot of work, but it all makes sense and helps to reinforce the class themes. He is very friendly one on one, and seems to care about his students. Really interesting class material, and he has a lot of cool stories and experience
He can be pretty funny at times, but the class is just kind of unorganized. I'm still not sure what I learned. I am an environmental science major and am fairly disappointed from what I had heard from this class; it didn't spark my interest as I was expecting. Recitation isn't that bad if you keep up with assignments. A lot of very long readings.
I would not reccomend taking this class. There are so many amazing professors and courses at this University- avoid this class if you can. Dr. Gangi is a smart man who is very capable, but this class needs a good deal of attention and revision before it becomes a jewel.
Gang's class was a really enjoyable class. He doesn't use powerpoint for lectures so sometimes it's easy to become distracted. Really cool topics are discussed. Recitation material is a bit petty. Never read any of the required things and still did well in the class.
Gangi is a pretty cool guy. He covers a lot of different topics, which at first you wonder how they relate to ENEC but in the end, you see how they do. Straight lectures in class so be ready to write. Recitation is really where you do all the work. Homework is just readings, which you don't absolutely have to do. Deff recommend the class.
He was devoted to finding students research opportunities (went out to lunch every Friday with his students)
Great guy, great lecture class. Lots of optional assigned reading, but I managed to get an A without really reading much. Beware of hard grading TAs!!! He hates computers so be prepared to write your notes. Subjects tend to overlap, so if you find a couple readings to reference on your midterm and final/ generally pay attention, you should do fine
Greg is easily my all-time favorite professor at UNC. It's not surprising that after taking his class, so many people become environmental majors. His class ties together some of the most interesting ideas about economics, energy, politics, society, and the environment in ways that inspire you and leave you hungry for more. Take his class.
Gangi is an awesome professor, and human in general. Extremely knowledgable and passionate about the subject. My favorite professor so far at UNC. 10/10 recommend.
Gang provides an eye-opening experience in ENEC 201. His lectures are very interesting, to the point that my friend (who wasn't even in the class) would come listen to him sometimes. Recitation has a large group project, but it really isn't that hard.
Dr. Gangi is an inspirational and engaging lecturer with massive resources available to share with students and very easy going.
lots of work in the recitation courses
Dr. Gangi is one of the most respected professors at UNC. He cares deeply about inspiring his students and is passionate about the material he is teaching. Beware of not-so-great TAs like the one I had. Also, Gangi extends an open invitation to eat lunch after lecture every Friday, go! Best way to study for exams is to talk about the content.
Greg is the man. I absolutely love his class. There are a million articles and books to read, but they will make you really well-rounded in the subject. You have to care about the environment to get into his class though. Seriously - Greg is the man. Take his classes.
This class has been my favorite so far at UNC. Gangi is very knowledgable of the subject and the course is eye-opening. There are lots of readings but they are not crucial to do well on exams. There is a lot of work in recitation but it is do-able, and well worth it.
Took a while to get used to his lecture style, but once you get a system going it gets easier. The grade came from 3 big things, and recitation ( so PRAY to god you get a good TA, since the rec isn't necessarily interesting or easy). Greg was a cool guy that made the material interesting and relevant and always presented the class with further opps
If you haven't heard of this Coral Reef Ecology course, go google it now!! We took a trip to St. John's in the USVI during Spring Break as a part of our class and it was an incredible way to get my EE credit. A lot of the class focuses on fish IDS, contrary to the coral reef title. Each class meeting will have student presentations on coral topics
Greg is a cool cat, I had him for ENEC 201, but his lectures are pretty weird. There's always a general theme, but you can never really tell where he's headed. He seems to just get up there and talk. If you can get around that, he's pretty great. Also, he likes Germany. A lot.
Greg's class has been my favorite so far at UNC. Great prof, great man. Skim the readings and you should be fine. I'd highly recommend this course for first year students.
Awesome class, amazing perspectives, everyone should take it no matter your major. Just skim the readings and you'll be fine. You don't have to go to lecture but you'll want to, and the tests will be very difficult without notes (his powerpoints are not helpful). Definitely a workload but that's why it's a four hour class.
Gangi is the best professor i have ever had at UNC. His lectures are very captivating and will leave you inspired after every class. The recitation consists of a semester long group project but overall the workload is manageable. There are lots of reading assignments but they not necessary to do well in the class. Cannot recommend this class enough
This class has literally no structure. He is very knowledgeable but it is challenging to pay attention/keep up in lecture because he is all over the place. Tests aren't a measure of your knowledge but just if you happened to get the exam version with topics that you were able to get good notes on.
This class was the biggest mistake I ever made at UNC. The exams were all different and varied in level of difficulty, which was unfair, especially as they want you to be extremely specific. He goes off on tangents and he is hard to follow in lecture. I would never recommend this class to another person at UNC.
Gangi, simply put, is the best. For any Environmental Sciences minor or major, BA or BS, Gangi is the teacher for you. Interesting lectures that actually grab your attention. Even if you don't pay attention for the majority of class, the tests he gives are about main points and are overall very simple. Recitation is difficult based of TA.
As a professor, Greg is great. He lectures for the whole class and has very interesting things to say. The structure of the class on the other hand isn't so great. You'll have no idea how you're doing until after you pass or fail the midterm, which has multiple versions. All of the work is done in recitation and there is a big group project.
Greg himself is a fantastic professor, his lectures are (with a few exceptions) very engaging and the material is interesting and relevant. The problem is that if you have a bad TA, the class is a living hell. Also, different versions of the exams are harder, and some of them are WAY too specific. While attendance isn't required, I recommend going.
Gangi was my favorite prof last semester! He's usually pretty funny during lecture and talks about things that are super relevant. Weekly recitation with one of the TAs (get Sandeep if you can). 1 Midterm, Final, Group paper, and a few recitation presentations. Pretty easy and overall enjoyable
Gangi is a very smart man! I loved his class, I found it so interesting and learned a lot. The recitations are not easy, but very doable.
There's a lot of reading, but it's not all required and mostly very interesting. I thought we had good class discussions in the honors section. Gangi can be really helpful outside of class but I also felt he could be condescending if you weren't super interested in certain career tracks within environmental science.
Greg is so passionate and so smart. His lectures (which was just him talking) were always interesting and engaging, although some could get repetitive at times. The recitation was fun and relatively little work. I would recommend this class to anyone interested at all in the future of our world.
Gangi is a fairly good professor. He is accessible; very fun to have lunch with (which he sometimes does with groups of students after class). Gangi knows the info really well and can clearly communicate, but often flustered when asked a question. The class is done well and less intense than most STEM courses. Lectures can be interesting or boring.
Don't take this class. Just don't. Professor Gangi is nice, but the lectures were overwhelmingly ineffective and boring, and exams were ridiculously hard and on material never touched on in class with unfairly varying levels of difficulty between each exam version. Unless you are majoring, my biggest piece of advice is not to take this class!!!!!!
I did not like Dr Gangis lectures. I often felt like I was being fed an opinion instead of given the tools to form my own, & found his attitude during lecture to be self righteous. Expected to remember names that were mentioned once during lecture and write essays on topics that are poorly explained for someone w/ no civics & economics background.
Worst lectures I've ever had, very disorganized, no outline, messy slides. Very unfriendly for international students. Professor Gangi is knowledgeable but he doesn't know how to teach. Exam papers were unnecessarily hard and unfair---he gave three versions with different levels of difficulty. Test on things mentioned only once or never mentioned.
Gangi is a really nice guy and is very knowledgable. The difficulty of his class is left up to the TAs. He's doesn't standardize the grading scale, so it's unfair amongst the different recitations. Last year's grading was easy. This years was ridiculously difficult. I would not recommend it because the uncertainty can leave you with a bad grade.
Took him for ENEC201H a couple summers back so it was a small class. Was very interesting and convinced me to switch to a ENEC major (although I've since switched again because I had fears over my hireabillity). Class was easy and discussion based which I liked.
His lectures are fun and engaging, even if youre not an environmental major. You dont need to do the readings at all, but you should attend every class if possible and write A LOT of notes. The final exam and the midterm is entirely based on the lecture material. The assigned movies play a big role in exams as well.
I liked Prof. Gangi, but found most of his lectures to be unstructured and boring. Recitation is definitely more work than the lecture itself, and who your TA is makes a big difference in your workload. There are a lot of readings, but as long as you know general themes tests are definitely doable.
Ugh Hated this class. Don't let my grade fool you. Had to put in way too much time for recitation, pulled two all-nighters for mid-term (73 but optional drop bc they put the most obscure question in) and final (95). Lectures are disorganized/boring. Only take if you're going for the sustainability minor because the actual topics can be interesting
The class is SO interesting. Important global topics. Context: I am considering being an ENEC major. Gangi is a super cool guy and I'm also doing an internship with him. Super disorganized though and sometimes monotone. Don't take if you're looking for an easy elective because the recitation has a semester long group project and a presentation.
Prof. Gangi is a really cool guy and the class is not boring at all, but the lectures can get really monotone and recitation is a LOT of work. If you take notes and use the outlines you get as review well, this class is easy but I would not recommend taking if you're only looking for the Gen Eds. Large part of your grade is at the mercy of your TA.
Dr. Gangi is a pure genius when it comes to environmental policy. He understands every aspect of the insanely massive landscape. This makes the class so entertaining as even if a topic comes up that isn't interesting to you, it will soon be replaced by another diverse topic. Lectures are huge parts of the exam and there's a huge group project.
Dr. Gangi is just one of those professors you vibe with. He is really chill and, in my opinion, a pretty lenient grader (the TA's grade so I guess it really depends on who grades your test). I will say, Gangi's PowerPoints are not helpful. WRITE WHAT HE SAYS and take pictures of the slides for later. 90% of the "classwork" is done in recitation.
Gangi's lectures are really interesting, and you have to attend his lectures or else you will not pass. There are three versions of every exam and one is always way more difficult than the other two which is frustrating. The TA does most of the grading for group projects and stuff.
My only big upset with this class was that I was forced to take it online. I would have loved to be able to do this in person as Gangi is always incredibly open to talking to students more on any topic. He does his best to teach a topic that is usually depressing in a way that shines on hope and inspiration for the future of the planet.
Gangi is awesome! I had him from ENEC 201, and he covered a wide range of topics and made them all really interesting. He is super knowledgable and gives relevant examples. There is a big case study group project that is worth 20% of your overall grade which is kind of annoying, but other than that I would totally recommend this class!
Professor Gangi is super nice and clearly knows what he's talking about - some of the lectures can be a bit dull but they're always pretty easy to understand. Lots of in class discussions and a wide range of interesting topics were covered
I loved professor Gangi! The class was super interesting - we talked about lots of different aspects of the environment. He is super funny, very well connected, cares deeply for his students, and is available outside of class. Take this class!
for online during class it was just break out room discussion but we did have interesting discussion sometimes
We used a flipped classroom, so before class we watched an hour long lecture video & then each zoom session was just discussion. The lecture vids were straightforward so it was easy to understand the (super interesting!) material. Gangi is really knowledgeable about the topic & can provide great resources for further engagement. Easy, fun class!
Amazing professor! I had no prior ENEC knowledge and Gangi made things very clear. Super caring professor. Long homeworks though.
Gangi was great, his answers to questions were super helpful and informative and this class really opened my eyes to a lot of intersectional issues in the US and on a global scale. I feel like it would have been better in person as Zoom discussion rooms aren't always productive, but overall a good class.
This was an awesome class! I learned so much. The recorded lectures were a little bit long, but they really do help your understanding and I personally found them really interesting. Dr. Gangi is super nice and very knowledgeable and he is very accessible for questions during and outside of class. I 10/10 recommend this class!
Gonna be honest Gangi is the best professor I ever had ENEC 201 was a breeze and he is an amazing person, extremely caring and generious person. This should be an easy a for you if you try.
I dropped ENEC because of this guy. Everything he says is either wrong and easily disproven, outdated, or an outright lie. The entire class is given over to badly-researched right wing propaganda. He's also a bad lecturer, but the fact that he teaches ENEC is so much worse--he tries to make it an econ class, but he doesn't know economics!
Prof Gangi's is sort of boring if you don't care about the subject matter, but he gives a lot of insight on the subjects at hand. He's not the most exciting lecturer but the class is set up for you to succeed. There are also group projects, which were incredibly annoying to do online however.
Gangi is so boring. TAs does most of the work and a lot of homework for recitation. Flipped classroom with pre class videos longer than actual class time (mainly him rambling in a monotone voice) in a policy class leads to unproductive class time with 75% just Gangi rambling about the same thing over and over all semester. Do not recommend
Dr. Gangi is the best professor I have ever had at UNC. While ENEC 201 is extremely interesting, Dr. Gangi truly shines outside of class. When I had him, he would take students to lunch every Friday & talk about his global adventures and give the best advice about school/life. TAKE HIS CLASS! It will be one of the best decisions you ever make.
Gangi was knowledgeable but with a flipped classroom I did not particularly enjoy his class. His lectures assigned outside of class were boring & long. His in class discussions consisted of breakout rooms where most people declined to participate. All grades come from the TA so that wasn't too bad. He has a lot of stories but idk if theyre true tho
Gangi is brilliant. Lectures are a little scattered but I learned so much in each class. Some group projects, grading by TAs but I had no problems. This class has so much value beyond academics. Go to the Clean Energy Summit. He cares A TON about student success, take him up on offers for networking and advice!
Dr. Gangi presents well rounded information rather than biased information and my eyes were opened to a lot of things. This was a flipped classroom which was great because discussion was really interesting to have albeit awkward on zoom! There is quite a bit of work but its manageable and TA's grade nicely. Semester group project sucked though.
The lectures are very long, but they are informative. We did a lot of breakout rooms during class time, which were helpful, but got a little boring by the end of the semester because a lot of people didn't speak in them. Overall great class and very informative. It opens your eyes to different aspects of America and the world.
Everyone should take this class regardless of their major. It really opened my eyes to the problems the world is facing, even problems that aren't specifically regarding the environment. All the grading was up to your TA, so grading harshness varied, but my TA was an easy grader. One big group project with a 10 page paper- surprisingly not too bad.
Flipped classroom meaning he assigned pre-recorded lectures for homework and then made class mandatory even though it was useless. If you have a nice TA, which most do, it's an easy class. But his extent of "teaching" is a monotone video rambling over a powerpoint for homework in place of any kind of effort. Lazy.
It's a flipped classroom model so the lectures are all sent out beforehand and the class is actually discussions. The lectures are long but can be watched on 2x speed so they aren't bad. Kinda monotone speaking but the content is interesting. He offers some insight during discussion but not a ton, mainly just class discussion and then sharing.
Dr. Gangi is incredibly intelligent and you will learn so much from him. He has so many cool stories to share and many intern-type opportunities for students in the environment/energy sector. All your work is done in recitation and graded by the TA-- the only hard thing is there's a huge group project that consists of a group paper.
Dr. Gangi is an incredible professor. He is so well articulated and knowledge on his lecture topics. He has tons of real-life experience which is super cool to hear about -- for example, he studied and lived with a modern hunting gathering group. This class had a lot of moving parts but was so worth it. Got me interested in environmental policy!
I loved him! Super cool professor and so much to learn from his class. Definitely recommend! His topics are so important and need to be discussed
Coming from somebody who didnt try and got an A, Gangi is BORING. The preclass work for this class was to watch his entire lecture video from covid. Making students show up to class only to put them in breakout rooms and discuss a lecture you gave and recorded a year ago IS NOT TEACHING. It's an easy A but at what cost? TA did everything he sucks.
Most of your grade is based on work done in recitation so be prepared to work on a group case study. The lectures for this class are really interesting.
Mostly teaches his opinions. Exams were just asking you to regurgitate his personal takes. Knows a TON of influential people though. He can definitely get you connections in the environ. science world. Was always offering internships. Had to leave class early to chat with the president of Shell once. TA grades everything. Large group projects.
This was a weird class lectures were youtube videos and then during the zoom portion you talk in breakout rooms about the material which I thought was a waste of time. The grades come from recitation work. There are two group projects that are graded in steps. It honestly depends on your TA but grading was pretty easy. Super easy class.
Dr. Gangi gave really good lectures and clearly is an expert on the topic, but I thought this class could have been run a lot better. A lot of my classmates and I were consistently confused about grading policies, test format, etc.
The format of this class is strange and incredibly backwards. The homework is to watch a 1-2 hour lecture video of him talking through the lecture, and then he goes on random tangents in class. All work is done in recitation. Attendance is a joke. Informative, but be prepared to teach yourself.
All work that you do will be done in recitation/outside of class. Would personally recommend watching the pre-recorded lectures as they do help with understanding lecture. Dr. Gangi can be a little old-fashioned personally, but he has always been nice to talk to and his lectures are very interesting.
Greg is knowledgable about the topic and cares a lot, but attendance was not mandatory and he got angry that no one was coming to lecture and made the final in-person, 8 short answer and an essay when it was originally to be online. It was still pretty easy, and everything (including a large group project) was graded by TAs and they graded lightly.
I applaud Gangi for the cleantech summit, it's helped me a lot. But his class was very boring and grading was done by his TAs. Don't get me wrong, the class was VERY easy but it was difficult when halfway through the semester, Gangi made the final in person, no longer online. I, like many students, saw this as unfair (which it is). OK prof overall
This professor was so nice and easy to talk to! All of his lectures were so interesting. The workload was not stressful in the slightest and when it was a bit heavier, it was on content that was really interesting and gave me the ability to research real-world situations. He seems to know everything, which is quite inspiring.
Dr. Gangi does not teach. Dr. Gangi is lazy & reuses his lectures from COVID-19. He instead forces people to lead discussion every single day. Your grade depends on a case study, midterm, & final exam that is MULTIPLE long essays & short answers, which are graded harshly. He is arrogant & just teaches his own opinions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He's kind of passive aggressive and the structure of the class is horrible. All lectures are long videos to watch before every class and then he discusses random things in class. It is interesting content and the class would be 20x better if it weren't a flipped class. I would really prefer to hear the lectures in person.
Professor Gangi is one of the few people to successfully utilize a flipped classroom. Read articles and watch videos before class, and then come to class to solidify the concepts. Professor Gangi is very knowledgeable in all sorts of disciplines. This class changed my life and inspired me to work harder to create change in the world.
I am sort of conflicted in this review. While I found Greg to be very knowledgeable and personable when speaking with him on a personal level, I did not enjoy how this class was structured. Greg essentially just repeats what is discussed during the lecture videos during class. He is clearly very passionate, but a new format would do well!
Dr Gangi provided the majority of the course material through prerecorded zoom videos, and the lectures just briefly brushed upon the topics. The TAs were the main graders, and the final was worth 35% and the questions were oddly specific. This class for an intro class was weirdly laid out and I wouldnt recommend unless you need it.
Your experience will be decided by the work ethic of your group and how many anecdotes you pick up on. Incredibly flipped classroom, with any knowledge coming from recycled videos and "supplemental" readings. Gangi knows the content, but most topics felt like personal tangents. Although easy, 201 requires a restructure and isn't worth your time.
His lectures are great, even if a bit hard to follow if you're an international student, as there are many references to American history and politics. He gives 1h long videos for every class, which became too much for me after the first weeks of classes. The exam were well-planned and he was very helpful whenever i asked for help
Loved Greg, lots of lectures and lots of notes but he keeps it interesting
DO NOT TAKE ENEC 201 UNLESS YOU NEED TO. Lots of long, boring lecture videos. His voice is boring and drones too. He claims it is a "flipped classroom" however it just feels like a double lecture. I would not recommend this class unless you are very interested in the subject. I am taking it to fulfill a gen ed credit and regret it.
The content of this class is interesting & Gangi is interesting (kinda). However, the format of the class is not coherent and the midterm/final exams are a pain in the ass-SO much writing. Also, it is a flipped classroom, which makes it feel like two lectures. You will be graded mostly in recitation and it is hard to succeed unless ur a kiss-ass!
I think Dr. Gangi is a good professor. That said, I was not a fan of the class structure. The topics covered were very broad, and his lecture is flipped-classroom. You will have two simultaneous group projects with different people, which are frustrating. Once I finish the class I will be glad I took it, but I'm also glad I didn't major in ENEC.
This class was actually awful. Dr.Gangi comes off very pretentious at times and also kinda lazy. All of his content is prerecorded and you come to class to "discuss" and answer the occasional pollev. The midterm is take home and the final is extremely long and in person. I had high hopes, but I was let down.
Professor Gangi cares about his students. That said, he doesn't care much about his class. I practically took the class online; all the material came from the online lectures, being present to class was a waste of time. He seemed unprepared for class each day and used doom-and-gloom tactics to talk about almost all environmental and social issues.
Everything for this class is done in REC. This is env. economics. Have to do two group projects at the same time. He assigns online lectures that have an ad every 5 minutes. He seems like a great guy, but I don't need this class for my major and should have dropped it. He often teaches his opinion as fact. Unnecessary stress. Choose wisely.
This class is pure waste of time. I would say it is inspiring if you are interested in these topics, but the class itself is organised in a ridiculous way. I don't no whether it's because Prof. Gangi recorded online lectures during the pandemic so he can let us watch these instead of really teaching the class. BTW, he really loves BYD.
Gangi himself seems like a nice guy but this class is a huge waste. First, it is essentially an Econ class. He does a flipped classroom where you watch lectures at home. You are supposed to discuss in class but he gets up every day and rants about something completely unrelated. No incentive to attend class. Just do well in rec.
Gangi is my favorite prof so far at UNC. He can go off on tangents, but he manages to keep my attention far more than any of my other profs. I ended up switching majors because I enjoyed this class so much and what I was learning. Relatively easy(so far) if you are interested, a lot of the class is graded on projects/final.
tbh gangi seems like a cool guy but damn he cant lecture. he has prerecorded lectures from the pandemic that you're supposed to watch as hw. and then in class he just comes across as unprepared and goes on a lot of tangents. and even those prerecorded videos are a drag because his voice is lowkey monotonous and its hard to pay attention.
The idea that the class is asynchronous isnt true because during class he just summarizes the pre work. The discussion depend on the class. All your work is graded by your TA and youll have to write.
Despite what people say, Professor Gangi is very knowledgeable and wants to see students succeed long-term. Lectures are flipped and cover many topics, giving you a big-picture view of environmental change. Grade based on essay-based final/midterm and group projects in recitation. Would recommend if you're interested in environment/energy/policy.
failed flipped classroom. everything i learned was from the recitation (which i really enjoyed because i like the subject, met cool people, and had a great TA). Greg is just... brace yourself. you truly have no idea what is going to come out of this mans mouth at any given time.
Most work is completed in recitation and lecture is very much him just talking at you for an hour. He also has pre-recorded lectures that we are supposed to watch before class, so he doesn't go into much detail during class. He has a very monotone voice so the pre-recorded and in-person lectures are a bore.
Gangi is a great prof and his knowledge is vast. Only thing is that recitation work is by far the most time consuming part of class, even though the final exam ends up being nearly half of the final grade.
Professor Gangi is quite boring. His lectures are long and his attempt at a flipped classroom wasn't really successful. Most of the work for this class is completed in the recitation and it often doesn't align with what we're learning in class. He's a nice guy, but I stopped showing up to his lectures eventually.
Great professor who is very knowledgeable and has an wider understanding of the material. He is also very involved in the space and is up to date allowing him to share current and relevant info. He cares about his student and has also been a great advisor/mentor to me outside of class.
Do the readings, and you'll never have to go to the lecture. Don't do the readings, and you also won't have to go to the lecture; he doesn't say anything relevant to the readings. This man is getting his master's degree in yapping. I would've given this whole class a higher rating if I didn't have to complete a group project for the whole semester.
Gangi is known throughout UNC as a respected and professional teaching professor. Taking ENEC 201 this spring as a non-major (GenEd requirement), I found that the best way to succeed in the class is simply to show up and bare the mundane lectures. There is a large recitation component to the class, so attendance there is crucial for a high grade.
This class was okay, attendance in recitation and putting in the work there really matters to get a good grade. Even as an environmental major, I find Professor Gangi to be pretty insufferable as a lecturer and person in general, even though he is very well connected. Although a manageable A, I wouldn't say this class is an easy A.
Dr. Greg teaches diverse topics centering on sustainability. I learned a lot from his lecture. However, this course is only graded by TA. The exams and group projects are hard and intense. I put much effort and time but the grade was not reflected. Need to do reading/watch lectures/take notes forehand. Overall, still learned a lot from Dr. Greg.
Gangi's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the recitation is where the real learning happens. Attend faithfully and supplement with resources like unstuckstudy - that combo should set you up for success in this manageable course.
Amazing classic archetype professor, but keeps up with current events and vibes. Cannot recommend Greg enough.
Not sure why theres so much bad feedback. If your any env related major take this! Yes, online lectures are annoying but get they get shorter. Did not put any work into this class and got a 97. Very fun guy and has LOTS of connections if you need it. Theres also not much work in recitation, one group project and then main paper. 10/10 recommend.
Professor Gangi is one of the best lecturers I've ever had! If you can get past his monotone delivery, he has so many interesting things to say and really gets you thinking about the material. Come to class though and take notes — the exams are hard and are worth a lot of your grade! Join him for lunch after class if you can — he's a cool guy.
Prof. Gangi is a cool prof, held office hours during his lunch, knowledgeable, willing to answer questions. His lectures are sketchy, no PP slides posted probably for that reason. Heavily relies on guest speakers who don't stick to his curriculum. His TA's run recitation hours & grade the work, don't qualify for the job--shallow and arrogant. Run!
He does not seem to prepare for any of his lectures, does not post slides either. Invite guest lecturers coming out of nowhere and all contents are tested. Close note essays for final which is nightmare. All homework done in recitation. (edit: TA really tried her best to save our grades by giving a 99 percent to final paper)
Dr. Gangi is a great person, but a pretty disorganized professor. Don't recommend taking this class if you're not interested in environmental policy and law. He uses a flipped classroom, but it's really a double lecture. Honestly, this class would have been way better if it weren't a giant lecture hall class. I recommend going to his lunch hours!
Professor Gangi is a nice guy, but his in-person lectures are unnecessary. He has Zoom lectures posted that cover all the content he discusses in class. Grading all depends on the TA. I had a more challenging TA, and all I heard was how less challenging everyone else's TAs were.
Gangi is well-known in the industry and among faculty, so if you get to know him through office hours, he can get you some nice connections. His lectures are monotone and long, often unnecessary when the final/midterm tests only 1 or 2 topics. Most of the assignments are through recitation, but as long as you do the work, you should be fine.
Class was very boring, and I found the way he taught to be very boring as well. There was very little engagement during class, but there was also very little work. There is a midterm and final, and I got 100 on both with very little studying. If you're interested in the topic and want a relatively easy class, take it.
Really pretty terrible lecturer, jumps from topic to topic so fast. LOTS of outside work he wants you to do, though it isn't really required. Recitation is helpful, though. TAs are generally good, easy class to pass and attendance is not counted.
Gangi is a really smart guy, and the content is pretty interesting if you can get past Gangi's monotone voice. The class is project/presentation heavy but is graded lightly. Gangi has a great load of connections and does a good job connecting with students by offering to get lunch with them. That all being said, the class is very disorganized.
His lectures are borderline excrutiating to listen to, but the material is easy to digest if you're interested in the material. The class itself is not hard to pass if you go to recitation and put a little effort into the assignments. Gangi is great for providing connections in the energy industry if you reach out to him.
Taking notes on the lecture before AND in class will almost guarantee you the information for an A. I slipped a little at the end, but the grading is not as difficult as most say and the material I found to be extremely interesting. Gangi is super knowledgeable and willing to know and help students, just a little intimidating to start.
He was a good professor, just a bit hard to follow in lecture, and a bit boring. Just beware of the recitation for this class, the group projects are brutal. Midterm wasn't bad, the projects are so much worse.
Dr. Gangi is one of the best professors I've had at UNC. If you are concerned about building your network, he's your guy. He also sat and had lunch with us every Wednesday. If you take his class and he offers it, DO IT. Conversations with him are some of the most interesting conversations ive had in my life. what r u waiting for ENROLL!!
This class was amazing! The work all happens in the recitation, but the TAs are understanding and not very tough graders. Lectures are posted online and attendance isn't mandatory, but classes are quite interesting so I often went to class. One midterm and one final that are open ended and all come from the lectures. Great class overall, recommend!
obviously interested in what he talks about but I found the lectures to be extremely confusing and often uninteresting. Simple enough for a gen ed, although the midterm was graded overly harshly in my opinion.
