Very dedicated professor.Explains the best he can and doesn't care if you come to class or not just as long as you do well on the tests...Chemistry in itself is hard but he tries to make his tests easier and always has extra credit opportunities...
The tests are harder than how he makes them sound, but he is a great teacher overall. He makes class entertaining with jokes and explains difficult topics with clarity. Also, he is happy to answer any questions and is always courteous and understanding.
This professor is really hard. Attendance IS mandatory. He uses the clicker sytem to check. I spend about 20+hours a week working on his homeworks and still don't finish in time. He gives ALOT of homework. Also, his classes move too quickly
he's pretty funny.
Tests aren't super hard, but they aren't super easy either. He didn't require attendance for the majors only section. ACS exam at end of each semester gave decent extra credit points. Online homework was intense at times, but very helpful.
Dr. Gellene is a great professor. I was in the major specific section so his lectures had alot of depth and helped me to truly understand the material. He also has several subtle jokes so listen for them. If you dont do your homework, dont take this class.
Awesome prof. Highly recommended
Great professor, really interested in teaching the students. He's funny! I used to write down his jokes so i could giggle while i studied later. highly recommended.
Great professor. Says jokes to revive the class when lectures get pretty boring. Very friendly and defintely knows what he is talking about. There is lot of online homework that you have to do in order to pass gen chem. If you don't do the hw you will fail.
Gellene is the best chem professor to take. His clicker session help you get extra points so you don't bomb the course. Exams can be tough. He keeps you interested in class and is a good professor overall.
He makes chemistry enjoyable.
He's a great professor and makes his class really enjoyable. He's super funny and will keep you awake, but his class is very unorganized and he jumps around a lot.
Extremely helpful. Nice, funny, and reasonable. Jokes in class to keep attention but presents material clearly. Though class is hard, he gives several opportunities to get extra points.
He knows his material and presents it very clearly, though in a big lecture hall sometimes it's hard to stay awake anyways and you miss out on stuff. He often tells jokes in class and makes it really entertaining. His clicker sessions are very helpful both for learning/reviewing material and helping your grade. There's a ton of homework though...
Dr. Gellene is by far the best professor for Chemistry 1307. He's a great teacher, and is a very funny guy. He has clicker sessions unique to his section, and they are tremendous grade boosters and offer good preparation for tests. There is a lot of online homework, but it prepares you well for exams. I highly reccommend Dr. Gellene's class.
He tries to keep things interesting, but some times over does it. His clicker classes help you more than you think so GO! The tests are tricky, but if you pay attention you will do fine.
Great professor, definitely knows his stuff. You need to read before lectures to fully understand the material. This course is harder than the honors chem and Gellene is much more knowledgable than Casadonte.
Very good teacher. He really knows what he's talking about. He makes lecture interesting with his corny jokes, some of which are actually funny. His clicker sessions are a very big help for understanding the material. And he doesn't use the book, so buying it isn't mandatory, but it is recommended. He refers to it sometimes. Overall, Good Teacher!!
Great professor. He keeps you up to speed with the departmental exams and the clicker sessions help with your grade and understanding the material.
One of the best professors I have had here. He knows what he is talking about and tries to make it as interesting as possible. I used to not like chemistry but after having him I am loving it and I am applying to be a chemistry tutor next semester because of this class. It's a hard class, but if you study well (not cramming) you will get an A.
Do your homework and review it before going to class, go to the SI sessions and clicker sessions and you should be able to pass.. to get an A study with friends and be up to date with the OWL homework and get nerdy!
He is one of the best proffessors I have had. He really knows his stuff and enjoys teaching. I bought the book but did not open it once. Go to class, take notes, pay attention to clicker questions, and do practice problems. He is always there to help if you need it.
Gellene is an incredible professor. I had his class at 8am and it was still enjoyable. Go to class, pay attention, take notes, do the homework. Make the effort. If you don't get it, ask him, he's really nice and funny and he will explain it to you.
Gellene was the best Chemistry professor I had at Tech
He was an excellent teacher. Expect a significant amount of homework, but it definitely helps you understand the material. Taking the companion course that he teaches, Chem 1117, was extremely helpful as well.
Good professor. He definitely knows what he is talking about, I had class at 8 AM but he still kept it interesting. Lots of homework, but if you keep up to date it helps your grade. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS. They help a ton, and take the 1117 help course, the practice tests they give you are similar to the exams. Definitely recommend him!
Nice/funny guy. TON of online homework, but definitely do it. Read the book and take good notes (which can be kind of hard, he doesn't just write what you need to write. He talks) and you should be good
I had him for the chem support class for CHEM 1307. He helped clear out things I didn't understand. As a professor I hear he gives out a lot of homework. But taking him for the support class is a smart thing to do. I say he was part of why I passed.
Didn't learn anything from going to class. He is very knowledgeable but his class is extremely unorganized and he rambles on about things that aren't related to hw and tests. I learned from teaching myself. He assigns A TON of online homework. The tests are departmental, and other professors gave extra credit but he never did. The book is useless
Gellene is the best gen chem professor at Tech. I had him for both chem 1307/1308. While he does tend to get off topic, he is clear with material and open to helping everybody. Homework is assigned a lot but it is very helpful. Study hard and you'll be fine, the practice test he provides are a good judge for the actual tests.
The best professor I've ever had!!! Gellene is simply the smartest and funniest professor. He keeps his students engaged and makes me want to come to class. I love his corny jokes. He is always available to help students. To pass the class, go to SI session and do the huge load of HW he gives. He gives the HW to help us understand the concepts.
He is super helpful. I highly recommend going to every class cause he really helps with understanding the topics. SI sessions with him are a good opportunity to clear up anything you might be confused with. OWLs aren't always easy but you could learn a lot just by doing them, but the real learning is from him in lecture.
great teacher, however the material that he teaches (chemistry) is quite difficult. he tries his best to explain everything to the best of his abilities. read the book as well because several questions on the exams will not be covered in the lecture and can only be found in the book.
Truly an amazing professor who loves what he teaches. He rambles sometimes, but it is to keep the students engaged. Approachable for questions, clear presentations, and if you attend help sessions and do all of the OWL homework you should score well on exams. If not, there are plenty of tutoring opportunities included in your tuition on campus.
He is an amazing teacher and I am going to try to get him for as many science classes as possible.
Never does example problems.
Gellene is a great guy and teaches concepts extremely well. The problem is that the tests are not over "concepts" but rather problems (obviously). He assigns a LOT of homework through OWL, which is more harmful than helpful. He's probably the best Gen Chem professor Tech has though. Be sure to go to his office hours. He's a good guy.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not teach, so plan on getting the book to teach yourself. He does not use examples. He rambles. Went to every single class and learned nothing at all.
Took his support class for chem 1307. He is fun in a nerdy way, keeps you entertained. He's a great professor and an intelligent man. His support class really helps.
Probably my favorite professor my first semester. He is very helpful in both the homework he assigns and his lectures. He makes them interesting lectures although sometimes his lectures are pointless and he will lecture anyways. Take him if at all possible!!!
Only take this class if you have a background in college chemistry. He teaches as if you already know the material, so if you do not know it like me, this class is pointless. In class he would ramble about something irrelevant and then attempt to teach in the last 30 minutes. On the bright side he gives extra credit. Only decent thing about him.
Majors only section really interesting
Gellene is a great professor. He never does example problems, but you get all the practice you need through the countless hours of OWL homework he assigns. Go to SI sessions as often as you can. If you work hard and you want it bad enough, and A is possible in both of these classes.Be warned; most people thought the gen chem tests were impossible.
This help class is an easy A. The in class stuff helps a little bit but the online test that he puts out before the Chem 1307 help the most.
Gellene in the majors only section gives out twice to thrice the amount of online homework than the other chemistry professors. I spent so much time on the homework I could barely actually study. Don't take this class if you can help it. General chemistry is hard enough, don't make it harder on yourself.
Really good teacher and really funny!! He is always willing to help you and answer questions. He will extend homework if you missed it because of something more important. Very understanding with grades, for quizzes 50% or more 100%, and 80% or more on homework 100%. Best chemistry teacher I have ever had by far!!!
Great class, definitely learn something in it, but horribly useless large amounts of homework.
It's was major specific chemistry. The class was hard but totally worth it.
He is very thorough in his lectures. His lectures are almost entirely concepts, so if you are not a conceptual learner then he may not be the professor for you. However the homework has a lot of practice for applying those. He is extremely helpful and ready to answer any questions. I had him for CHEM 1307 and 1308 and would recommend him to anyone.
I took Majors Chemistry 1 and man was it a kicker. His tests are not the easiest so you will have to study. I will tell you I didn't have much of a science background in the first place, but if you try, you will get the A. There's also a bonus test which saved me. I encourage you to talk one on one with him because he truly cares about his students
Pretty difficult subject matter but he always did a great job breaking it down for the students. Always made class worthwhile and is a very entertaining professor
gets off on tangents a lot. take the class online if you can, tests are online also, and taking them in groups will get you an a. nice guy, is there for you if you ask him to help, offers a lot of second chances when it comes to homework.
Dr. Gellene's online Chem 1307 was the best class ever. We met once a week for a participation grade. Homework was worth 40%, and if you have an A, he will add 10% extra to any other section of your grade that you need. Homework is also given an unlimited amount of attempts, so there is really no reason anyone should fail.
Gellene is the best Chem teacher at Tech. I took this class online so I only saw him once a week for recitation but it was my favorite class. He's hilarious but also really knows his stuff. He's also very willing to help. He stayed after class with me for an hour helping me understand the homework. Take him if you can or you'll regret it!
The class is a tough one, however Gellene will do everything in his power to help you, you have weeks on the home works, and the tests are online, and he does review sessions prior to each. The concepts are tough but if you are RELIGIOUS about attendance and keep up with the homework you will get an A. I had him in class not online.
MUST COMPLETE HOMEWORK ONTIME NO SECOND CHANCES NO EXTRA CREDIT
I took chem 1307 online, Gellene made things super easy and clear. The homework was worth 40% but it's really easy (there's quite a bit though) Tests can be done online at home and there was a recitation once a week. Would recommend anyone who needs to take chem1307 to take it online with Greg!!!
Greg is an awesome teacher and he is definitely there to help his students. There is quite a bit of homework but goes pretty quickly. I would highly recommend taking this course.
The major specific course for CHEM1307 is not an easy class. The course load is much higher than regular chem classes. However, Professor Gellene is one of the greatest instructors I have ever encountered and he's hilarious. Do your homework (yes I know it's a lot), study for the tests, and DO NOT SKIP RECITATION. Don't blame your laziness on Greg.
If you are dedicated and willing to put time into completing the homework (which counts for 40% of the grade) you will do fine. He is hilarious and extremely helpful during the weekly recitations. There is no reason anyone should fail the online class. My only issue is that I had trouble retaining information from the online class.
I loved this class! All you have to do is do your homework (40% of grade). You have unlimited chances so its hard not to get a 100 on them. Go to recitation and write down questions and study those for the tests, they help a lot. He's super funny and a great professor. He really knows what he's doing. I also plan on taking his chem 1308 online too!
Amazing, dedicated, helpful, engaging instructor. Really funny and easy to listen to. Gellene makes chemistry less painful. I would take his classes over any other instructor!
Greg was a really great teacher. I took his online Gen Chem I class and he made me understand everything so easily. He hosted a recitation once a week which was part of your grade and his homework was easy to understand and helpful when it came to studying for tests. Overall awesome teacher.
Took 1308 online, TONS of homework!!!!!!! Tests are proctored through Respondus Lockdown Browser, he is really funny and cool
TAKE THIS CLASS!! Took 1308 online & actually enjoyed learning chemistry for once. It's a lot of teaching yourself but I learned more from this course than any other chem class. There's homework often, but it's very doable and worth it (he adds 10 points to your hw grade if you make 90+). He has a great personality/attitude, you have to love him
Homework was weighted heavily, giving you a chance to do well in the class despite not doing well on tests. Set yourself up well in the beginning so that the final face to face exam doesn't effect your grade. Greg is hilarious and very thorough and clear in office hours. DO THE HOMEWORK!! It's a lot of work but it helps you understand the material.
Attendance (in person or online) is mandatory for recessitation as you are graded based on your correct answers sent in via electronic device. I took this online and really enjoyed Greg's sense of humor and in person visits, but I know I would have done badly at an in person chem class at Tech. Glad I was able to do it online with him.
Dr. Gellene is VERY knowledgeable at chemistry. He is willing to help, but only if you actively seek it. Otherwise he will assume you are doing fine. There is homework due about every two days, and it is a LOT of material. However, if you stay on top of your homework and study early for the tests then you will do just fine.
Dr. Gellene is hilarious. He is by far my favorite professor at Tech. He really cares about his students and is all for you succeeding if you put in the effort. Hands down an amazing teacher!
I took Gellene's online 1307 as well as this one and both times he was an incredible professor. He gave amazing lectures during our weekly recitations that helped tremendously for exam prep. There's a substantial amount of homework and it's hard, but it's the biggest part of you learning in this class. Overall, great prof and great class.
Greg gives you lots of options to keep your grades up. He made the material much easier to understand than other professors. He's also super funny and if you keep up with the homework you'll get an A. Make friends in the class it will come in handy I promise. (poor tip: print the reviews and work them out, the exams will be much easier)
GREG!! I took Greg for an online chem class and had to show up to his recitation every thursday. If you don't go to recitation you won't pass, recitation is basically an hour long participation quiz. But he gives you all the answers! Easy tests if you do the homework and show up to class. He also thinks he's funny which itself is really funny.
A hilarious, informative, and amazing teacher. You will get an A, no questions asked, IF you do the homework when it is assigned. It is imperative you do it, despite the frequency and length of it. If you stay on top of your homework, you are prepared for the tests and the final. If you need more help, he has lovely office hours and good reviews.
Great, hilarious teacher! I took an online class with him; I'm not very good at chemistry, but even with one failed test I still managed to pass the class with a high B. How? The homework! There's a lot of it but by completing at least 90% he gives you full points - it saved my butt and propelled me to a relatively good grade.
I took chemistry 1107 hybrid class. The class has easy grading. But taking a lab class online is of no use.
Not an in-depth professor which is not my style. He quickly explains topics, and the homework is due MWF at 5pm. I wouldn't ever take him again.
By far one of the easiest professors you can get. I took an online Chem 1307 course and finished with an A. He basically gives you the test questions in his discussions so i highly recommend going to them. There is a lot of homework but it counts towards almost 50% of your grade. do the homework! Great guy, funny and i would definitely take again.
I took him, because of this website. He may have the best rating for a TTU chem teacher, but he doesn't teach at all. I thought his recitations would be him teaching us once a week, but it's just him throwing questions at you for a hour and twenty minutes. There is A LOT of homework, the most I've ever had. His emails are very condescending too.
I got a good grade in this class, but I worked my tail off for it through his excessive amounts of homework. Don't even mention his teaching, because he does not, his recitations are timed questions for an hour and a half. I would take him again, but it's because there isn't anyone else, Tech needs to hire better chem teachers in general.
Gellene is a very enthusiastic teacher and works very hard to get the class engaged and learning. As long as you pay attention in class and stay on top of the homework you will do great. Take good notes during the lecture because often he will say something in lecture that will come back on a test.
Professor Gellene is fantastic! I took 1307 and 1107 online. 1107 was hybrid, which is the best thing ever. Homework is due every MWF @8am. There are 3 tests and the final. He's very good about answering your questions about homework. The labs aren't that hard, just be careful with calculations on the lab reports. Have Fun!
I took 1307, 1107 (hybrid), and 1308 with Professor Gellene. Absolutely fantastic person, great humor and really does care how and what you learn. The weekly recitation is a really good time to ask him any questions that you have about the material. Gives plenty of opportunity to do well and succeed in his class.
Be sure to read the textbook and are able to understand the homework or the exams will be hard
THE LEAN MEAN CHEMISTRY MACHINE GREG GELLENE
So. Much. Homework. DON'T TAKE CHEM WITH GELLENE. I have never received so much daily homework from any professor, ever. Expect 3 hours per night, minimum. I spend so much time working on his homework that I often find myself sacrificing study time for other classes, or Gellene's class itself. So, for the sake of your sanity, drop it like it's hot
honestly take this class online it is much easier than taking it face to face especially if this will not be your major and just need the class to graduate. online was very easy.
Greg is a cool dude. I highly suggest his online Chemistry classes. Very homework heavy, due 3 times a week at 8AM but honestly if you can keep up you'll have an A no problem. HIGHLY recommend if Chemistry isn't completely your forte.
Although I am not taking him for chemistry next semester, Gellene rocks. (Tests are online and a proctor watches you through a webcam which gave me anxiety.) He is very helpful/accessible outside class and will help you with any questions. There is a lot of homework, but that is an easy 100 on 30% of your grade. Recitation too, but 10%.
If you are a chem-E or chem major you can get Gellene in person-Do it. Being an engineer, I just want to know how to get the right answer, so lectures only useful if you have questions about hw/exam problems. Taking notes on hw tells you easily how to do the problems and Gellene clears up anything you are confused about. he always brings donuts.
Dr. Gellene is seriously a great professor! I took his class online because I heard it would be easier than in person, and boy am I glad I did. There is a ridiculous amount of homework, but you have plenty of time to get it done. During recitation, he's very helpful with answering questions. Really enjoyed being in his class!
Took 1308 online and I understood way more chemistry than I did in 1307. Gellene's course is a solid choice, and I'm glad I did it.
Greg is the best. It is an online class but you still have to work for it. 60 is a C so it makes it easier.
This class is not that difficult however there is quite a bit of homework and he is very unreasonable and inflexible and will not let you make up anything for any reason. Make sure you do everything on time.
I love Dr. Gellene! He's hilarious during weekly recitations and does similar questions to the homework. Homework is due every other day during the week but it isn't impossible to pass it all since it gives you multiple tires and tells you how to solve it if you got it wrong. I learned more in this course versus taking it in a giant lecture hall.
Easy A! As long as you keep track of all the dates, you should be fine! Get started on all assignments ASAP and always double check due dates! There is recitation, basically just practice questions, once a week, taking notes over homework helps with that a ton! Material is so easy to learn and apply, but not necessarily to retain..
Take this class online if you can. The people who actually have to take the class on campus do the exact same work as the people who are doing it online. There is 1-2 hours of homework due every other night (the worst part), a weekly recitation (pretty much an online quiz), and 4 tests. Homework is worth 40% of grade but it's not too bad.
I took this class online and it was AWESOME! The homework comes out three times a week and really is not that difficult. I didn't even do all of them and I still had a 94% hmwk average at the end but make sure you keep the average up because it is 40% of your final grade. Always responded the my emails the day of! Super easy if you do the work!
extremely cool and funny! do your work, ask questions. lecture is slightly scattered sometimes but it will all add up in the end. Lots of homework and recitation grades, which outweigh test grades. Getting a few Cs on tests arent as bad if you make all As in homework, and try to learn.
Dr. Gellene was a great professor who I took for gen chem I & II. Chem II has a lot of homework, but it's not unmanageable. While his lectures can sometimes go off base from the tested material, you should be fine as long as you study the homework & practice tests he provides. He offered extra credit on the homework grade for Chem II.
Gellene is an ok professor. His lectures really don't make sense, and are not helpful (I stoped going after about a month). The homework is really the worst part, but it's not so bad, just time consuming (due every M,W,F). I plan on taking him again, simply because there are no better professors. Just do the homework, and study for the tests.
Thank the lord homework is 40% of the grade as I made Cs on all my tests and still made it out with a B in the class, would have preferred the classroom setting but the weekly recitation with Dr. Gellene was sometimes helpful..?
just dont take chem 2 through ttu the way chem 2 is structured here is ass. 40% hmwk average spent way too much time on this and other classes suffered due to it. he puts up a review for each test but i never felt it helped much. i took this online and do not recommend. the way this class is structured is going to stress you out seriously trust me.
Youll pass if you do the homework and participate in recitation, its a huge cushion. However, the exams are nothing like what you go over in HW, recitation, or practice exams. I probably wouldnt take this class again because its a difficult subject to learn online and the exams and coursework dont really correlate.
1307 is way easier with him than 1308. 1308 is way harder, however the grading scale is 40% hw, 3 exams 10% each, recitation 10% and final is 20%. Do your homework and do all of recitation and youll pass the class even after bombing each test. The tests are NOTHING like the homework you work on so its heavy. If you study you should be fine.
I had an 88.8 in the class and he refused to round it up to an 89 so I could get an A. Obviously not willing to work with you regardless of the work you put into the class. You will have 3-5 sets of homework every monday, wednesday, and friday. homework is 40% so it's a big cushion but exams are way more difficult than the HW or recitation problems
All of the learning is through a website. Hes one of those profs that (I feel) dont really care about you. The tests are kinda scary because its worth so much of your grade and he doesnt give you material thats actually gonna help you. You can get an A if you work hard but honestly just take another prof if you can. Make a group chat if you can!
The tests are nothing like what you learn from the website. There's a lot of homework, but if you do good on the homework and the recitation while getting 30s and 40s on the exams, you can still pass.
The tests are nothing like the online homework and to me it felt like he didnt care about the students. I emailed him 3 times about problems I was having and only got an answer twice. Both times he replied to me he made it seem like it was dumb for me to ask for help and made me feel like it was my fault I didnt understand the topics.
I only passed this class because I used videos online to teach myself the content; the app for the class did nothing for me. Lots of homework! That's worth 40% of your grade. The recitation only helps when you're prepared and he goes over questions fast. Do the homework and the recitation and pass the tests. You'll do well in the class.
He has 3 tests each worth 10% and the final being 20%. Homework was worth 40%. So do good on the homework and you'll be fine
Honestly doesnt really really care about his students at all. Tests are extremely hard and monitored via proctorio and theres an INSANE amount of homework
Honestly made me fall in love with chemistry, he is so funny keeps me entertained during a 9:30 which is not an easy task. Fantastic man, gets you the information you need while also cracking jokes. Homework is heavy but its not hard and it helps you drastically on the test. Recitation is kinda fun on Monday mornings with a glass of wine.
Professor Gellene is one of the funnier professors Ive had so far. His tests are like the practice tests but they are hard. There is a lot of homework, due every MWF. Homework however is 30% of your grade, so do well on homework and you can do decent. Tests are only 12% each, so dont worry if you bomb a few.
Do not take his online class. There is so much work, and the tests are nothing like what the homework is over. The tests were horrible. I would study countless hours over the lectures and practice test, but they did not help. I only passed with an A because I took Ap Chem in high school.
This was my favorite class for my first semester. Prof. Gellene was funny, helpful, and had great lectures. The homework was copious and time consuming; however, it was structured to help the student learn the subject. Tests were hard and you needed to study the material. My class was for majors only and we did more homework than the other 1307
Homework assigned every MWF and due soon after worth 30%. Tests are multiple-choice, on BB, and proctored through Proctorio, not taken with the rest of the 1307/8 students. You have a recitation online at 9:00 am on Fridays worth 10% If you keep up with your coursework and go to recitations, you should not have a difficult time making an A.
I took his online chem 1307 course and this class has tonss of homework due MWF and its a big part of your grade but once you get the hang of it it becomes routine and it's not so bad. Make sure to attend recitation because it's a big part of your grade. Tests are online and proctored. most important part of this class is doing the homework on time
Had him for the online course. There's a TON of homework, but the homework is worth 40% of your grade, so if you do all the homework you have a good chance of getting an A. There's also a lot of extra credit which got me over a 100 for the class. He was a really nice and funny guy during the weekly recitations. I definitely recommend him.
I suppose class is different in person versus online but taking it online is great. We meet once a week and it's for a grade so that helps. But if you do the homework on time and do the extra credit there is no way you can't pass with at least a B.
I took his class online and asynchronous. We met once a week for recitations which is pretty similar to Kahoot. You basically have to learn everything by yourself. Do all the extra credits so you won't have to worry about doing badly on the exams. It is pretty hard to teach yourself chemistry but if you put in effort it is an easy A.
The class is no problem if you do all of your homework, which there is a lot of. If you bomb a few tests do not worry at all, as long as your homework score is high it will pull your grade up significantly.
I took Chemistry from Prof Gellene online this past semester. The class was homework heavy & there are also lots of extra credit opportunities with the homework assignments. Tests are proctored through Proctorio as well. As long as you do extra credit & the hw, study for tests, & attend recitation sessions, youll have an A in the class no problem.
This is the easiest chem class at tech!! The class is heavily weighted on homework which makes it way easier to boost your grade. Theres a ton of extra credit in the homework, I ended up finishing with a course grade of over 100 because of it! Take him!
DO NOT wait last minute to do assignments, you will be miserable. His class will consume very much of your time but it is so organized and the website he uses teaches very well. KEEP TRACK OF DUE DATES. DO ASSIGNMENTS IN ADVANCE. Extra credit on every unit was awesome, take advantage of that. Very great teacher
I enjoyed taking Gellene for CHEM 1307. He is very funny and answers questions. His class mostly consists of homework, so be ready for that. He gives homework every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and it is easy IF YOU READ THE CONTENT or The Organic Chemistry Tutor. Please take the Exam Practices if you can. I needed .25 to have an A.
He uses MindTap on Cengage which is where you are going to access all your homework. If you go to the SI sessions, do his homework consistently and ask him question, you should be able to pass his class. As long as you do all the homework, you should be able to pass.
He is a great professor and makes the recitations entertaining with his commentary. Mindtap is also a nice software to use and you can easily get good grades on the assignments. You do have to study for the tests to do well though. I have had 3 during each semester. If you actually take the time and do the work, you will do very good.
Professor Greg is great, but I didn't like his teaching methods. It's mostly self learning from the homework platform called Cengage. His homework is heavily weighted so do his hw if you wanna pass regardless of failing the tests. The HW's have extra credits at the end of each chapters and that will help you a lot with your grade. Tests are hard.
If you take this class, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Homework + recitations make up 50% of the grade. And the extra credit is on the homework, you can literally make up 60% of your grade just by getting homework done. Which means you can average less than 40% on tests and still pass. But to be fair, the tests are pretty difficult. And there is a lot of hw.
The class itself is easy to pass with all the extra credit and homework, but he doesn't teach you, you learn from the textbook. If you just need a good chem grade this would be a good class, but if you have to take more chem classes later on I wouldn't recommend.
He seems like a nice and funny guy, but this is the worst class I have ever taken. I spent hours trying to teach myself chemistry and doing homework that really didn't even prepare me for the tests. The tests were VERY hard and I failed every single one. I did all my homeowrk and extra credit so I was still able to get a B, but it was stressful.
DO. THE. HOMEWORK. Its tedious and takes a lot of time but like other reviews say The homework and extra credit save your life. I would take this class ONLY if you don't have to take more Chemistry, if you do I'd look elsewhere. Be prepared to self teach almost all of the content. Professor is super nice and charismatic though. Tests are DIFFICULT.
Do all of the homework! Most of your grade is homework. There is a lot of extra credit. If you do both, you'll pass for sure. Like all chem classes, the tests are difficult. It is a online class, so you will need to teach yourself, but he does a recitation zoom that helps fill in the gaps. If you need help, he'll do what he can to see you get it.
For anyone needing to take Chem 1307 or 1308 I would highly recommend choosing Dr. Gellene as your professor. The class is hard but if you do all of the homework and the extra credit you can make an A in the class because of his grading scale. In my opinion, if you don't make the grade you're wanting, it is more so because of you than him.
I took Gellene for 1307 online I enjoyed his way of teaching so I decided to take him again for 1308 and it was mistake!!! it was difficult to keep up with the homework on some lessons as they did get harder. We mostly thought ourselves and he got mad when the exam average was so low and we asked for help. Very Rude. Extra credit saved me.
I did not like this class. All of the course work was done on Mindtap. There were no lectures at all so it is completely self taught using the online book. Would not recommend.
Took him online and he offered a lot of extra credit for each chapter. The A is definitely doable if you do the extra credit. Make sure you finish your homework too. Exams were mostly like practice exams.
You only ever encounter the professor once a week in recitation sessions, but you wouldn't want more than that. He talks way too much during the recitation questions and makes it difficult to concentrate. Also, don't even bother reading the syllabus since your classmates will ask enough questions and he'll answer all of them, wasting your time.
I loved greg. He's funny and good at explaining the material quickly but still effectively. I will be taking him again next semester for CHEM 1308.
Class is homework heavy, do the reading and you'll understand the material very well. The lectures can seem long, but he does his best to make sure we understand and to alleviate some of the seriousness. Extra credit is available and you should do it!! Tests are not open-note so be sure you understand the material.
On every chapter there are two chances for extra credit which could boost your grade by a lot. He always makes the lectures interesting, but sometimes he rambles so you're mostly going to be taught by the homework assignments more than class. However, he's very easy to reach if you're struggling with the material.
You need to do all the homework and as much of the extra credit as you can. The homework is very time consuming, and only teaches you the content on a basic level. When you get to the tests you will find it MUCH more difficult than the homework. You can still get a B by doing all the homework and most of the extra credit.
Dr. Gellene truly loves his job. Lectures are full of humor and fun stories. There is a lot of homework, but it is relatively easy and REALLY helps to reinforce the material. He answers a ton of questions. Wonderful exams and exam reviews. Good extra credit. Easily the best chem teacher at Tech.
I had him for both CHEM 1307/08 and it was the best experience that I had with Chemistry. He is fun & quirky. The pace is tangible and lectures are not hard to follow. He provides a lot of resources before exams, such as study guide, practice exam, lecture day dedicated to questions. Do the homework and extra credits assignments. It will help!!!
I've heard great things about Prof. Gellene from his in-person classes, but unfortunately, he does not bring the same level of dedication to his online courses. He doesn't provide any lectures and you're expected to know how to do everything without any guidance but the homework. If you want to take this course online, take a different professor.
Homework and class participation accounts for half the grade, so don't skip them. A lecture once a week is very helpful for anything you didn't understand about homework. Great teacher, and very funny.
He was a great professor. READ the chapter in the book before going to class. It will make the lectures much easier. Lectures are fast paced be sure to pay attention. Lots of extra credit, with tons of homework. Great professor would take again.
don't take his online class and expect to be coddled through the semester. he says from the start that the class is on your own. if you can't teach yourself DO NOT take his online class. however gellene is a good professor, he'll answer any and every question asked, and go into more detail if needed to make sure you truly understand. i liked him
An interesting and active lecturer, he provides a lot of helpful information to learn during class time. At times he splits of on strange tangents, telling somewhat relevant stories, but apart from that he is a pretty easy to follow lecturer.
I am sure Professor Gellene is an excellent professor to his in person students. However, his online courses are extremely difficult to follow. Professor Gellene did not lecture, he instead held online quizzes once a week. When asked questions, he gets very short with students. If he is told about problems with Cengage, he does not seem to care.
He doesn't teach you shit and his unit 1 exam is easy, but the tests get harder after that. Recitation is a joke and you get timed to do questions that are long in like 80 seconds. Good luck and you get ripped off for mindtap too. F*** this guy.
If youre considering taking online like I was regardless of the bad reviews you'll regret it. Dont expect help if you ask and he gets very short and diverts your question when you do ask during a recitation. Im sure hes cool in person but do not take him online. for reference I took him at the same time as Cal 2 and am having a harder time here.
He was not a good teacher for his online class because he did not actually teach. Instead we just used our lecture time to do quizzes. Would not recommend online!!!!!
I am in online chemistry but have over a 100 because of how much homework and extra credit are provided. If you do the homework and extra credit then it's an easy A. The tests aren't super hard and he provides practice exams that are similar to the tests. He doesn't teach so you will have to teach yourself and put in the work. READ THE SYLLABUS!
This professor is great and homework material is best learning material I've had in a long time. His class is entertaining and kept fun. I would say the concept of chemistry is hard, but he makes it as easy as he can.
His lecture style doesn't really suit my learning style but he's a great teacher. He's very funny, down to earth, and you can tell he really wants everyone to pass the class. He gives SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. Just make sure to stay on top of the millions of homework assignments and you should be set for a good grade.
I didn't really show up to his lectures, bc tbh it was too early in the morning, but when I did, he was very entertaining and you can tell he loves his job! He was super helpful. If you do the homework and read the textbook, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
There is a lot of homework but also a lot extra credit alongside it. Very fun Professor. The class is difficult but Professor Gellene makes it way easier. Definitely recommend for CHEM1307.
Read, do the extra credit, and do the homework. Watch out for the tests because they can tank your grade.
I took this as an online course after failing in person twice, outcome was so much better and this professor truly helped me understand. Thanks Prof Greg
Greg was often rude in his zoom classes to other students and on a few occasions me as well. He did not explain things very clearly and while the course content was easy and enjoyable Greg was not.
He is the best chemistry professor. Chemistry is obviously pretty difficult but he actually makes it enjoyable. His lectures are super funny and he is always keeping us engaged, he is also very caring and understanding. He genuinely wants us to succeed. There is a lot of homework but a lot of extra credit and his test are similar to homework.
He is an engaging lecturer until he pulls out the practice problems. If you take him in person at the end of the semester you can take the ACS exam as a grade floor. There are 6 assignments due every week. If you don't want to read the textbook or teach yourself, show up to classes because he doesn't use powerpoint or plan to get notes from others.
This class is SOO EASY! 40% of the class is homework grades and you get unlimited try's on it. Also test are only 6% each so you could bomb the test and still get an A. He gives extra credit for every test, and give you 2 extra days past the due date to do work with a 10% penalty.
I loved Professor Gellene, he was an amazing Professor and I would take him again. His class is easy and you learn a lot, there is a bunch of extra credit and homework is 40% of your grade with unlimited attempts. Recitation was fun and he encourages working together.
Do the extra credit! Do the homework! Don't skip recitation! That is the best foundation for a good grade in Greg's class.
Just do the homework on time, complete as much extra credit as you can, and be sure to attend recitation lectures! If you do all that, you can easily get an A, even if you don't do well on any of the exams! He is a great guy and I highly recommend him!
Loved the 1307 online course offered by Greg Gellene. Just avoid the pitfall of forgetting your HW (its worth 40% of ur grade), and make sure you attend the weekly recitations, and you should at the very least be fine. Plentiful extra credit is also available in the course to boost your grades and help you earn an A. Would hands down recommend.
The format closely mirrors his online 1307 course. Doing well on HW and recitation, along with doing extra credit becomes more important as the tests are more difficult and harder to do well on. I would easily recommend this course as doing the easy stuff makes a good grade and learning the content manageable. Would take again
Gellene is an amazing professor! He makes the course extremely easy to pass. He allows for much extra credit and even curves the recitation extremely!
Greg is a really good professor. He cares for all of his students and really wants them to know what they're learning. Lots of extra credit, and very fair grader. Put in effort, be present, and you'll have no problem passing. He will work with you for any troubles you are having, learning or technology wise.
Greg is chill but this class is a lot. There is a hefty amount of homework due every other night, and you won't get reminders for any due dates (him or in syllabus) - so you have to make sure you're on top of it. Missing a homework is a big deal because it's 40% of your grade. Will say he didn't teach much at all - cengage did most of that.
I took Chem 1305 online. He did not provide any lectures or learning materials. I had to purchase the book to teach myself.
Took this class (CHEM 1308) online over the summer and it was a doozy! 40% of the grade was homework but it was by no means a breeze. I recommend doing the "review" extra credits and save the challenges for the end of the course. Greg is an amazing dude who is very empathetic and hilarious! I took recitation-based rather than lecture-based.
He's a little grumpy and even though the course load is a tad annoying the class is actually beneficial. Especially for those in need of slower paced and more detailed lessons. As much as i found myself annoyed with G Money and his moderate grumpiness he has set the class up well.
I had Dr. Greg for both Chem 1&2, both online. The course is self-paced and although you are mainly taught by the Cengage system, it is very well made and you shouldn't find yourself lost. Homework is 40% of your grade and extra credit goes into this category. As long as you do the homework and the extra credit you will easily get an A and learn.
Dr. Gellene is constantly bringing up new information for every single lecture. Sometimes, it can be difficult taking notes, so I recommend reading the chapter from the textbook before going to class, so that you can understand and reinforce what he is saying. He does assign tons of homework, but it really helps in preparation of his online tests.
he is fun during zoom class but you have to make sure to pay attention otherwise youll miss a question. homeworks were easy but you have to do them every other day. also they are due at 8am so make sure to do them the night before.
Greg is honestly a very good professor, you do learn a lot of the content from the hw on Cengage but he always explains the concepts in class after you complete the hw. A good way to be on top of your work is to do the assignments immediately as they get released. And you should also read the textbook as well. He offers so much extra credit too!
He was THE GOAT. the best professor in the world, he taught a lot in the recitation meetings and had an amazing sense of humor. He was very optimistic and constantly helped the students, he had lots of football references so I would recommend learning a few references to get along with him. Easy Grade, make sure to do all the homeworks!
Incredibly rude. While I did well in this class it was torture. He was impossible to get a hold of and when he did respond to emails he was rude and discouraging. I would not recommend him at all.
He was the one who noticed that I was struggling mentally and helped me get help from school resources. He looks past you as grades and sees a human. He jokes around, which is appreciated at 9am. If you sleep, as long as you don't snore, you're fine. Super accommodating even asked if he should wear a mic to make it easier for me to record lectures.
He makes snarky remarks when you're unable to get in touch with him or when you're having a technical issue with trying to access his class. He fails to communicate with you. His lectures don't make sense and he doesn't provide powerpoints and he expects you to know the first couple of units once you get there.
One of the easiest professors at Tech. TONS of homework but also gives extra credit. Highly suggest making a groupchat for this class to exchange questions and answers.
Every test is proctored and there is crazy amounts of homework.
I took his online course during my freshman year at Texas Tech. This type of course is mostly a "teach it yourself" course as his lectures are not very helpful and attendance and participation are mandatory. If you get a question wrong on his PowerPoint, that counts against you despite him not explaining how to do the problem prior.
This class is so easy, BUT if your major requires you to actually know chemistry I would suggest taking it in person. Otherwise, homework is easy and the exams are a guaranteed A if you know how to .... manipulate things...... easy class.
Lecture is basically useless. If you learn anything it will most likely be from doing homework. And if you have to book office hours with him good luck, as he is very difficult with that. If you also have to email to ask a question good luck.
He is a very good teacher. The way he grades helps if you're not very good at test taking, which I am not. I bombed my first test with a 40 and made 75s on the rest and am going to pass with an A since his tests aren't weighted very much. MOST IMPORTANT JOIN A GROUP CHAT FOR THE COURSE!!!! Especially for homework questions!!
Greg was an okay teacher. I liked the amount of extra credit he gave and his homework weighs more than the exams. We had to meet once a week to do review but it was never bad. However, he doesn't really teach, so you're left to teach yourself. And he also gives a lot of hw but it's manageable. Overall, he is an okay teacher.
Super easy class. Join a group me and you'll for sure get an A!
Really loved his class and his extra credit opportunities
He is overall a good professor. He give out a lot of extra credit through homework so if you bomb your exams it won't hurt you, so it's really good for bad test takers. I suggest making a group chat and doing the extra credits on the chapter homework. If your major requires you to understand chemistry and apply it, this is not a good class to take.
Professor Gellene's class is a mixed bag - lots of homework, but also easy tests if you stay on top of it. Lectures can be hit or miss, so make sure to supplement with the textbook and unstuck ai for effective prep.
The only thing I didn't like was the weekly meetings because there were graded quizzes every time.
I took the online section. The homework is a huge chunk of the grade and it is easy to get a 100 for it. But there is SO MUCH of it. Easy A is you actually do the work.
took online cengage course which was pricey but very easy. it was a lot of simple easy courses. exams are proctored but theyre easy and he gives extra credit options. would take him again if i could. super easy and do able course.
Chemistry is a tough course for a lot of people as it was for me too, honestly greg was funny in class and was always in a good mood, something that is very important to me. His lecture style could be a bit hard to understand as he just wrote notes on a paper that were not easy to follow. Attendance was irrelevant but I would take him again.
He is a good professor but its chem I did not like the class and it being an online class made it worse but its easy to pass if you do the hw thats it. It takes a lot of time but you can fail every test but still pass
Hes a nice man and I would take him again my only complaint is that he runs over his alluded time frame by 15 or 20 minutes so I was constently late to my other classes
Professor Gellene is a great guy he is funny, nice, isn't rude or anything. The issue is the way he teaches his class, we meet once a week online for a slideshow quiz, he goes over questions and answers. The class is entirely self-taught, he is completely away for the learning and teaching process, unless its the slideshow quiz.
Lectures are answering questions off a slideshow for grade. Had to self-teach content. Homework is a large chunk of the grade and have 10-15 assignments per week. Tests are proctored online but only 25 questions. Professor Gellene grades fairly and will give extensions if asked. Overall, would take him again and was an easy A.
Great online class. Lots of homework but if you stay on top of it than you will succeed.
By far the best chemistry professor at TTU. His mandatory recitations were very helpful, and the participation during Zoom meetings made the class engaging. He is clear about expectations from the start. There's a lot of homework, but it's very doable if you stay on top of it. Highly recommend him!!
Fails to teach students, relied heavily on students self-teaching. Lots of homework with little weight on the homework. Tests and lecture attendance are majority of your grade. Would not recommend taking this class if you can avoid it.
dont take chem 1301 with him. he doesnt teach on the zoom meetings and is NO HELP when you ask him anything.
If you're taking Chem 1301 with Greg Gellene, just beware it's very homework heavy, but if you do the homework and don't bomb the exams, you should be completely fine. He provides practice exams that are fairly similar to the real exams. (Also, the exams are a lot easier than the homework.)
This class has LOTS of homework, but you can easily pass if you do it! There's 5 exams throughout the semester. Along with once a week zoom meetings for participation. Get ready to read, this class is hefty. If you stay on top of your work you'll pass. Greg is straight foward with his grading criterias. Lab is boring but it is what it is.
Very homework heavy, his zoom lectures are very helpful.
Greg is the least helpful professor of all time. He does not teach anything and expects you to learn it yourself. Honestly embarrassing how good everyone thinks he is, he really has no business teaching. Exams are all multiple choice which sucks as it feels as if he is going for volume of students over actually teaching
If you need an A in chemistry, I highly recommend taking this class with Greg Gellene! The tests are definitely manageable, even if you don't get the best grades on them. The key to passing this class with an A is to do the extra credit, it boosts your grade. He is so nice and you only have to join a zoom once a week. I highly recommended!
Lots of homework but lectures weren't bad and sometimes were fun. He's a funny guy.
