MR.KATTNER IS A VERY EAGER PROFESSOR WHO ENJOYS TEACHING FINITE AS A SUBJECT. HE ALSO EXPLAINS THE MATERIAL VERY THOROUGHLY, AND ALTHOUGH FINITE IS NOT ONE OF MY STRONGEST SUBJECTS I UNDERSTAND THE WAY HE TEACHES IT. ALL IN ALL, I STRONGLY SUGGEST HIM.
This class is very hard. The teacher is tough
THE PROFESSOR IS VERY NICE, ALTHOUGH FINITE IS VERY HARD, IM GLAD THAT I TOOK FINITE IN TWO SEMESTERS INSTEAD OF ONE AND IM EVEN HAPPIER THAT HE WAS MY PROFESSOR FOR BOTH.

Greg is a nice man and an energetic teacher. The subject matter is very difficult and sometimes it's hard to learn the material the way he teaches it. He tries very hard though

A tough class that requires you go attend regularly, especially since he implemented a daily quiz. But he is very nice and is willing to stay and help afterwards, should you need help. I would definitely recommend taking the 2 semester finite w/ him!
this class is quite possibly the most boring ever. Teacher likes math way too much. Torture to sit through an hour of this. How did he get a teaching degree? beyond me
Compared to other finite teachers you could be taking, this guy is easy. I failed second semester finite twice and got a b- with him. If you aren't good at math, your participation and going to class pays off with him tons.
Mr. Kattner is very friendly, personable, and understanding. He also is able to explain material very clearly. However, in terms of T101, a class in which the material is mostly self-explanatory, he sometimes tends to oversimplify. He also takes a long time to grade.
First Rate Professor! Goes the extra mile for students. Turely wants his students to succeed!
I'm not great at Math, so I took finite in two semesters and got an A each time. This guy explains the material really well. He gave a quiz at the end of each class, but it was always a short problem (or in some cases just one step of a problem) and you can collaborate with others on it. Great prof!
Doesnt talk very loud but gives good, clear notes. He's a funny little man.
he's a strange little man, but a pretty good teacher...just boring, but what math class isnt.
Professor Kattner is very understanding and always makes things clear for his students to understand. I have never had a teacher who cares so much for their students and enjoys to teach so much. Thank you for everything you do, Professor Kattner!
Eager to help, somewhat difficult to follow.
Prof. Kattner is so dedicated to the study of mathematics. If you have questions he will definately help you during his office hours. The class is tough, but he tries to make sure that you can succeed. I would suggest going to his study sessions.
I hated math, especially finite before taking Mr. Kattner's class. I love how he is so enthusiastic and truely wants us all to pass!!!! He is an amazing math teacher
He is very into math and you can tell. It shows when he teaches and he will make you feel better about the subject.
He really wants you to understand math and does not mind answering questions.
At first, I really liked this guy - he reminds me of Mr. Rogers. He says things like "this problem could be daunting!" and it's really funny. After awhile, though, it gets pretty annoying - plus, he makes a lot of concepts WAY too difficult. Sometimes he gets caught up in talking about how daunting something is rather than actually teaching it.
He is a very understanding teacher and wants you to get to know the math. Sometimes on the sections he doesn't go over the main things, and can spend a lot of time on just one problem for one section. He is ALWAYS available for questions and tests are not to hard.Must do homework though, and is good to be in class.(He raises grade if you are there)
Prof. Kattner is very kind and wants his students to do well. Even if Finite is a struggle for you, you can pass it with Kattner. Go to Class! It isn't mandatory but it bumps up your grade, Do the Webwork! It, too, adds to your grade. Go visit him during office hours-for help, he's great one-on-one.
He's super patient, and goes over everything very thoroughly, which might make the class seem a little slow to fast learners. Very friendly guy, and always willing to help you out.
Great M118 teacher!!!
Greg is AWESOME!!!!! He is such a cool guy and genuinely LOVES finite! He makes the examples that he goes over in class very clear and is always willing to give you extra help if you need it. The material is kind of challenging, but he makes it a lot easier. He is a super nice guy and I would recommend his class to everyone!!
Do not take him. If you want to learn anything. You will have to watch the finite show because he definitely cannot teach you. He takes 20 minutes on the easiest examples in class that are nothing like the insane exams he creates. Plus, he's a liar. Nothing he says is true.
Mr. Kattner is a nice guy, but... do not be fooled by his kind demeanor. His tests are NOT easy even though he always states they will be fair. He takes a somewhat easy 2 minute concept and turns it into a 15 minute confusing discussion. I suggest watching the Finite Show. Steve is the man! Office hours help but once again the tests are TOUGH.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. It sucks, esp. if you dont like math. He doesnt explain anything clearly so you have to teach yourself mostly.Tests are deceiving, says theyre easy but they arent. Basically if you want to pass and waster your time retaking it, do not get him!!!
NICEST teacher ever. So helpful and truely cares about your success. Does an awesome job at explaining the material. That doesn't change the fact that finite its ridiculous, but it certainly helps!
I'm great at Math, but Kattner somehow made it impossible for me to get an A. His first test was extremely easy, then they just got ridiculous. His tests were way to complicated. I heard many stories from friends about how easy their test was only to go into Greg's room and face impossible arithmetic. Avoid Greg, even though hes a nice guy.
First thing's first, finite sucks. I hate math. But at least he truly wants to help you. He talks like a textbook, yeah, and he can get boring, but if you force yourself to pay attention he can actually help you out. Plus he gave us the biggest curve on one exam.
He is a really nice guy, but not a very good teacher. He does want everyone to do well and has available office hours where he can help out, but no one really even goes to class. He also makes webwork really long, never posts exam grades when he says he will, and doesn't explain things very well.
M118 sucks, but Kattner made it alright. Most of the class dropped by the midterm, but it wasn't because he was a bad teacher, it's because people just don't get finite. He answers questions clearly and has very helpful office hours. Make sure you take all the help opportunities you can - they work. Really really nice guy.
The class is not fun, but this is the best professor that I have had in the math department. He will spend as much time with you as you need to make sure you grasp a concept. Go to his office hours, it is worth the time!
Kattner isn't bad. Nice guy who wants to help, and will try to help you understand the material. Exams are pretty challenging, and his voice will get boring. And though he's a good teacher, the subject itself is hard to grasp and the Web Homework is long. I've heard worse from other teachers, so stick with him.
He teaches the material very well, and makes it very easy to understand his lessons. His tests are rather difficult, but since the Midterm and Finals are departmental, they are incredibly simple.
Absolutely one of the nicest professors on this campus. If you ever need help with homework or anything, he will gladly take the time to help you. More importantly, he teaches extremely well. Terrific guy and terrific teacher. That is all you can ask for.
This class is ridiculous. He teaches every concept with the most simple examples and then uses the toughest examples on exams, yet promises he is FAIR. Not. Awful Teacher.
Sort of talked down to us in class, but he made an effort to be clear. Unfortunately, he would do the easiet, albeit the most complicated, examples in class when there were simpler routes that would have made the tests much simpler to take. But he was great with office hours and extremely helpful when you asked for it.
Professor Kattner is just about the weirdest prof ever. I thought he was really funny. He was also extremely helpful during office hours. Go to office hours! He will do harder examples to help prepare you for the test! Finite is a sucky class no matter what, but Kattner is a good prof for the job. He is really clear and loves the subject.
Kattner did a good job teaching finite. As long as you come to class you will be fine. The hardest part is coming to class since his voice can drone on, but seriously, you will do fine if you can get over that.
go to class, do webwork, and you'll get an A. Very easy to understand. First test is hard but after that the class is very straight forward.
Prof. Greg is awesome with office hours! Go to his office hours. Going to lecture is needed. Go the Webwork. Tests are tricky, study the material! There are no extra credit or retake options though.
Finite is not going to the most interesting subject and Kattner is not exactly the most exciting teacher. He did teach it very clearly though, going through all the steps so you could easily follow, very helpful as well. Having a lot of WebWork was annoying but it prepared me for exams. The best Finite around.
Kattner is a great teacher. His lectures are very through and he explains all the clearly. Go to class, do the Webwork, study a bit and you will do fine. The midterm and final are departmental, so they can be incredibly easy or painfully difficult, it just depends on the semester. Stick with Kattner, one of the best around.
Yes, finite is an extremely annoying class to take but Kattner does a great job teaching it and is really helpful during office hours. He genuinely cares about his students, which is nice to see from a math teacher.
Good professor. Probably best Finite professor at IU. Helps students when they ask for it. Somewhat clear although he realizes his mistakes when he does them. Overall, M118 was very clear with this professor.
Hilarious professor, very entertaining and interactive in class. Not bad during hangovers
Kattner is a super friendly, helpful, and explanatory professor. His only downfall is that he is so explanatory that if someone asks a stupid question, he will spend 20 minutes explaining it. Super helpful in office hours.
He's really nice and loves math. Makes finite understandable and you can tell how much of a math nerd he is and it's adorable.
Kattner is extremely passionate about teaching. If you want help, he will go above and beyond to help you out. He is very clear in his explanations. If you need to take finite, take it with Kattner!
Kattner is great. Sit in the front and he will recognize you. Be sure to attend his office hours regularly. He is always happy to help his students.
Kattner rocks! He breaks everything down super well. Calculus became easy with him. He is an excellent math instructor. Recommend him!
Kattner is a great professor. Finite isn't fun, but he makes it clear. His exams can be tricky, but if you understand the concepts and really work on the homework then you should do fine. He puts the textbook online, so I really liked that because it meant I didn't have to buy it.
Class is very difficult and the final is SO hard. He's a nice guy who want's people to succeed, but sometimes he teaches as if he's in a small classroom setting, not a large one with 275 people. It's a very difficult atmosphere to learn in, even if you sat in the front every day. GO TO CLASS, nobody goes, but to be honest, it's pretty helpful.
Really nice guy! Roots for his students to succeed. But he teaches more concepts instead of processes/formulas, making the class really difficult. First exam is easy, but after that, good luck. I'd recommend taking M119 with another professor.
Kattner is a really good teacher and is willing to help students if you go to this office hours. He is one of the best teachers I have had to date. Love Kattner !!
Kattner was a pretty good teacher overall. I never really used the book though, so I would not recommend buying it unless you need to do extra practice. He gives you practice tests before each exam which helps out a lot!
Very enthusiastic teacher. Teaches at a decent pace most of the time and will stop for questions. Tests are doable!
Very enthusiastic.
It was finite so it was best to be there as much as possible, but I didn't miss any of his classes because his lessons were so valuable. I hated finite when I went in to his class, now I tutor people in it. Great professor
Overall he seemed nice in the beginning, but his class was super tough. He gave pitiful lectures and the practice tests were nothing like the real tests. He only gives four exams total the entire semester. Pay attention to lecture and go to his office hours. Getting help from him is like pulling teeth but you need to if you want to pass the class.
Professor Kattner is very clear with his explanations of course material. Glad to have taken him for finite; he is very fair, nice, and a good teacher. Would recommend!
No doubt Gregory Kattner is brilliant at we he does and is extremely dedicated to his profession. I write negatively because he would go quickly with lessons and move the boards around, confusing students and lowering the chance you take all notes. Many times will only get through 1-2 problems a class. Either take notes or listen in class, not both
Professor Kattner is very enthusiastic about his subject and explains all concepts very clearly.
Kattner knows what he is talking about and is very knowledgable on the material. Read the book, attend class and take good notes and you can receive an easy A.
best finite teacher out there. love this guy
Completely unclear. Talks strangely and hard to follow. Lectures and class time don't help with homework or tests. Test preparation is nowhere near the test difficulty.
Math is not my forte, but this professor is really there for you. Easy to approach. Nice guy.
The best math teacher at IU! I believe every students can get great grade if they do these following tricks! for 1st and 3rd exams -- you have to learn from the WEBWORK !!! that's enough for 2nd and final -- learn from test example. His test are quite challenging. However, if you go to class everyday, you will pass easily. Just use a trick!
It's over used but GKat is honestly the best instructor I've ever had. Extremely clear during lecture. WebWork is usually due a couple days after that day's lecture. He is greatly helpful during class, office hours, and review days for class. Super polite. If you have any questions, it will get answered by GKat.
Finite isn't a fun class and no one wants to take it, but if you do have to, take it with Kattner. He is incredibly clear in his way of explaining problems and concepts in class and will help you if you go to office hours.
Kattner's a solid pick. He'll make you work and that makes you learn. Class should be a joke but it's another weed out at IU (no calcs). Departmental midterm was easy and the final was ridiculous. But Kattner made the departmental midterm easy and the final doable. Combine him with the posted finite show supplement. Should get out in one piece.
FInite gets a bad rep, but honestly anyone who does poorly (at least with Katner) just didn't go to class. Highly reccomend him. Attendence isn't required, but I'd reccomend going. If you pay attention, it's an easy A.
He really likes math. He's pretty clear with his lectures and does a lot of examples. Tests weren't all that hard. Do the homework and you'll learn it.
Always replied to emails quickly and would help with whatever questions I had. He was very passionate about math and made that class tolerable.
Kattner is super passionate about math, it's super endearing and contagious. However, the departmental tests are pretty tough and the practice exams provided don't always accurately represent what will be on the exam. He's very willing to help and answers emails often. Does several examples in lecture, which is great.
He cares about his students and tries to make lectures interesting but it's Calc so it is hard. Very standard Calc teacher and would recommend to take compared to others.
Nice guy, bad proffesor
Kattner is clearly passionate about math, but he runs through class very quickly which leaves many things unclear. Sometimes he will only get through two different types of problems in one class, which leaves a lot of uncovered material. Office hours don't really help much either. The practice exams also do not at all prepare you for the exam.
Kattner uses confusing methods to solve problems and the class is 100% weighted on tests that are inconsistent with the online work.
Professor Kattner is so enthusiastic about math it is almost scary. He is good at explaining things (for the most part) so going to lecture and taking notes is helpful, however I feel as if the test questions tend not to resemble the homework assignments so be sure to go over the problems in the textbook. Course grade is mostly based on tests.
His teaching style is very disorganized and confusing. He is very passionate about Calc, but this is actually a detriment as he goes WAY too fast and jumps around without thoroughly explaining things. The homework was always 10x harder than what we learned in class, which made applying new concepts really hard.
Homework 3 times a week right up until the day of the final. Kattner stumbles over his words occasionally and sometimes moves too quickly, but he truly loves the subject he teaches and enjoys teaching. Encourages students to come up to him for help. I would have loved him if the class wasn't impossible.
Kattner is a fantastic person who was very passionate about his subject. Buy i found that most of his teaching methods revolve around the students either having previous knowledge of what was being taught or requiring to learn a lot of the material outside of class. In office hours, he is extremely helpful. Lectures mainly cover easy homework probs
Such a nice guy, but honestly, just not a good professor. He is a calculus genius and I can tell he knows what he's doing, but he's so smart that he has trouble explaining on a basis that makes sense to students. I have to learn everything right before the tests because his lectures and webwork are not anything like the tests. Would not recommend.
So annoying.. worst class ever taken. Such a weed-out class. He makes his tests harder than other professors. He is terrible at teaching. Cant study through the book, its terrible as well. So much webwork for the whole semester. Tests have so much short answers, which means the slightest error will get you wrong. You have so little time for tests
Hard to hear. Monotone. Goes through notes way too fast and makes homework often harder than it should be.
Show up to class and you'll be fine. Doesn't assign too much Webwork. You will have no difficulty understanding him, unlike other professors in the Calc department. Tests were exactly like the homeworks. By the end of the semester I was surprised at how easy he made calculus.
Prof Kattner is a decent teacher. Gives very straightforward lectures, teaches you what you need to know, accessible outside of class, gives a reasonable amount of WebWork. Tests are hard, but if you understand the concepts you should pass. Nothing very special about this class though, it's pretty boring and no effort is made to engage students.
Kattner is very confusing, he contradicts himself all the time. Finite is already a horrible class and he makes it even more confusing because he confuses himself. He is very nice though, he does care about his students but he is just confusing.
Mr. Kattner in many ways is akin to a living Khan Academy video. In class, he gives very clear and concise instruction and was also very helpful answering questions. I had him as my professor for finite math. While the class was not easy, Mr. Kattner did a great job explaining the material.
Really LOVES math. Gives decent notes. It's a hard class so if you put the work in and go to class you should be ok.
Very standard professor, nothing special, but nothing terrible either. Kattner is very nice and his class is kind of like watching a math youtube video. All of the finite professors are just alright however, so it is not like he is worse than the other options. Finite is simply a class that requires a lot of self effort to be successful.
The class moves fast and is basically only lecture but, talking to him after class or using office hours really helps if you don't understand what's going on.
My mans gkat knows his stuff. Might just be the weirdest man I've met but he knows how to get the job done. Also loves his astronomy. Overall great guy and great at explaining things as thoroughly as possible.
Prof. Kattner lectures like everyone has taken the class before. Not a lot of webwork, but the difficulty doesnt match what was discussed in class. The textbook is never used so dont bother, just a waste of money. The exams are similar to webwork in that the problems are more difficult than lecture notes.
Finite is a hard class, and he didnt make it easier. We would spend 30 min doing the same problem. You have limited attempts to get your hw right and he gives more Webwork than other professors. He isnt bad, I would say average at teaching, and he is a nice guy. You dont have to go to class, attendance isnt taken.
Kattner is an awesome guy. Sometimes can go too fast, but due to limited class time. Classes during exam weeks are for review. His own exams are extremely clearcut and fair. Exam-heavy, but that's to be expected. Take advantage of his TAs and other resources. There's a good amount of WebWork, but the numbers are always a lot nicer on the exams.
Kattner was a decent lecturer, but a lot better than other professors my friends had. The class is difficult because 85% of the grade is based on four tests, but Kattner truly wants to help you learn and clarify any struggles you are having. Super nice man that cares about his students- just goes slow sometimes on easier topics.
Usual finite class. However, he is very caring and takes time to help you understand difficult material. Would definitely take another class of his.
Hes a decent teacher and he explains things clearly. However, I often found that the problems assigned on webwork were nothing near the simple basic problems he went over in class. I had to teach myself a lot of the material because of this. Overall he is a fine teacher.
Lol, Kattner is super goofy and quirky and sometimes in lecture I have to stifle a laugh. Attendance is not graded and since I took calc in highschool I barely went. WebWork is pretty straightforward but is assigned every class. If you haven't taken calc before, you might not do well with Kattner as his explanations are shallow and he jumps around.
seems nice, but the class is just hard in general
Kattner is a good teacher, however he is not the best at explaining topics in the class. If you did not take calculus in high school, his class will prove to be a challenge. The tests are fair, the final is very hard, and there is homework assigned every night. If you miss class it's not a big deal, he posts all the slides.
Kattner is a super nice guy and lectures are mostly enjoyable -- he's the best choice for M119. He does his best to make a weed-out class like M119 as bearable as possible. Exams are extremely difficult and often don't totally match up with what's presented, although that's the case with all of M119. Attendance is definitely not mandatory.
He's a good guy that does well reviewing homework in lecture, he explains most concepts well but unfortunately that is where his abilities end. Homework is riddled with typos and questions with answers that simply aren't the actual correct answer. The worst part is the homework is entirely fresh material that isn't covered until after it is due
While Kattner obviously knows the material he teaches well he is not good at explaining his work. This is the most work Ive ever had to do for a class especially to get a C. I went to CTS (highly recommend for this class) 2-3 times a week and the ASC in Teter for hw help.
I really struggled with Brief Survey of Calc, but not because of Prof Kattner. He is a very kind teacher and is always ready to answer questions even in a huge lecture hall!!
TAKE THIS INSTEAD OF FINITE IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. ive always been good at math but this class sucks. i passed w a C so its doable, just make sure you get a tutor if you want any chance of surviving. also theres a ton of homework problems
Kattner isn't great but not terrible either. Lectures are dry and he frequently jumps around, but if you pay attention, you will learn. If you took AP Calc in HS (I did) you will be fine as long as you do the homework and study. If not, you'll likely have to put in more work (go to help sessions) if you want to do well. M119 is doable with effort.
M118 is a tough course as it is, but Greg seemed to make his lectures understandable. Sometimes things were slightly unclear, so I would highly recommend becoming friends with someone in the class so that you can go over notes/concepts with them. Overall, above-average prof for a finite summer intensive.
Great teacher for such a hard class. Had him during COVID-19 so all of his class was online. Lecture videos would get a little lengthy at time but that's due to him explaining almost everything. Course itself is hard but he cant change that. 10/10 would recommend for finite.
I took MATH118 during COVID-19 so it was online. I think if it were in person it would have been better. His lecture videos were about an hour or more and there would be multiple to watch and they seemed a little unorganized. This made the class challenging. Most other MATH118 professors drop your lowest homework assignments and Kattner doesn't.
I was not prepared for how hard this course truly was. Especially during COVID-19 and Kattner's class being asynchronous and online, it was very hard to learn and retain material. There is loads of homework. At least 3 or 4 a week that take hours to complete. He is extremely difficult to reach. Limited office hours, never responded to my emails.
He does not give extensions, even if you are sick. He gives homework on holidays. The only time he ever responded to one of my emails was to chastise me for using Mailtrack. He acts like his class is the only class. Gives an overwhelming amount of homework, lacks caring for students' mental and physical health, and is inaccessible outside class.
I have only heard bad things about calc prof so I think i lucked out. I thought the material was pretty easy just how the class was set up makes it hard to get a good grade; an exam would be 12 multiple choice so if you get 2 wrong you already have a B! GO 2 OFFICE HRS he is so helpful there and he really wants u to understand!! lil fast in lecture
Professor Kattner's course for M119 was overall not so challenging at all. The tests are quite easy and he is helpful in office hours. However, it was an extremely tedious semester due to the hours of pre-recorded lectures that I never wanted to watch (and didn't watch half of the time). The Webworks were boring and time consuming as well.
Kattner is a good choice for M119. The course itself is challenging, with hours of homework assignments and lectures to complete each week. His lectures are lengthy, but thorough. Hes also very helpful in office hours, though office hours are a bit limited compared to other courses. Overall, Kattner does a good job at making a hard course easier.
Ex student from 2019. Kattner is a great professor, but the glass is difficult. I failed the first exam but grinded my ass off or the rest of the class. He truly is invested, but if you dont pay attention youre ove. Put in 1 hour every day and youll be okay.
Greg is a really weird guy in the best way. He is just an odd ball. However, he's super nice and genuine. Go to his office hours and you'll get a lot of individualized attention. Finite gets a bad rep, but it's really not that bad. I recommend skipping the textbook and just coming to class. Do that and use the practice tests to study.
Kattner is literally THE BEST calc/finite professor you will find. I have had multiple and my grade switched significantly when I switched to him. Calc is a hard class, but he makes it easier. He's super caring and such a nice guy, and he's very clear when talking. Do webwork and practice exams and you should be fine.
Kattner was an alright professor. His lectures moved very fast and he does not look to answer questions during the lecture. The homework is a nightmare on its own (I believe its the math dept. fault). His office hours were good, but not did not help with understanding the content.
Very poor instructing, if you ask a question then expect a 30 minute response that confuses you more than before. Boring lectures. Very robotic guy. No extra credit. He will not adjust grades for any reason (even if out for 2 weeks with covid), finish with a 79.7? no roundups to 80 even if you attend every single office hour and put in your all.
During lectures he always tries to do the work in his head and more than half of the time he gets the answers wrong because of that. WebWorks (homework) for his class is usually double the amount as other professors. Out of 279 people that started in this class, 78 dropped it, only 40 got an A or A- (this information is shown on my transcript).
My hardest class; please try to take this class @ IvyTech. Professor Kattner all things considered was a good professor, but the structure of the class is unnecessarily hard and not worth the stress to take on-campus.
Professor Kattner is nice but I think he is very smart, which makes it hard to understand his explanations of certain math concepts. I struggled a lot in his class, which i don't think is entirely his fault, but he wasn't super good at explaining.
I took M119 with him this past year. Nice guy, but lectures were confusing and often hard to follow. Your grade is determined by 4 exams (85%) and homework (15%). I recommend to go to his office hours! He's very available outside of class and wants to help students understand the course. Out of all calc teachers, he seemed to be the best option.
this dude kinda sucks tbh, the fact that i took calc in high school is the only reason i somewhat succeeded in his class. lectures do not correlate to homework at all and the practice exams he gives are probably older than you are. if you want a good grade be ready to study your *** off for exams
This professor was nice but wasn't good at simplifying concepts for his students and he did not use class time efficiently. We would have homework due on the day of the exam which made it harder to find time to do the practice tests (which were all from 20 years ago anyway).
Kattner can definitely be a bit boring and robotic, but he is still a nice guy. If you ask for help with a problem after class he will work through it with you (he also has office hours). But if you didn't take Calc in high school, it might be hard to follow along with what he's teaching in the class.
You're screwed if you didn't take calc in high school, or at least you'll need to learn everything on your own outside of class. Don't learn much in lectures but tests are similar to practice tests and what's on the homework.
Kattner was a good professor but the lectures were useless to go to learn the material by yourself and if you didnt take calc in high school like me, you are in for a long semester.
Best math professor. Had him for calculus, and at first I was skeptical but after taking him for calc realized it wasn't the professor himself but the subject. Was always available for office hours. I took another math class after calc with a different professor. He helped me even if I was no longer in his class. He REALLY cares for his students.
His lectures are useless. Be ready to learn everything from TAs or finite tutors. Try to go to PASS sessions. He is accessible by email and is generally friendly. However, he's a poor instructor because he cannot explain / teach anything.
You cannot hear him during any lectures. We asked him to turn up his microphone and he still mumbles throughout the whole class. He doesn't show any mercy if you have excused absences with doctor's notes and gives you a 0 on the homework anyway. Basically taught myself all of the content. Campus tutoring is a life saver.
Definitely one of the best finite teachers. Make sure to sit at the front so you can read the board and so you can hear him and read the board. He will help you answer HW questions before and after class you just HAVE TO ASK FOR HELP. Also know that the homework questions will be way harder than any exam questions you will see.
While Finite is already a hard class, Professor Kattner made it more difficult. Math is a subject I am good at but his lectures are confusing, hard to follow, and often times he takes a long time to solve problems. I learned more from using a tutor and I suggest you use the tutors available on campus.
Overall nice guy but goes right into examples instead of explaining materials. Also very hard to hear him most of the time.
Kattner was a pretty solid professor in my opinion. I heard M118 was a super hard class but I didn't think it was that difficult. His lectures are a little slow and boring but he does a good job explaining the examples in-depth. His tests aren't too difficult and very fair in my opinion. Take notes, do the homework, and study and you'll be fine.
Greg is a really nice guy, but he often fails to effectively communicate concepts in class. I highly recommend meeting with him during office hours, as he will try to help you understand it. Nonetheless, if possible, take Finite Math through Ivy Tech instead of IU.
Really nice guy. Lectures are semi-easy to follow. The homework is and always will be 10x harder than anything you go over in class because Professor Kattner goes over the concepts in their most basic form. The first half of the class is extremely difficult, but the second half is honestly really easy. USE YOUR RESOURCES AND YOU WILL BE FINE.
It could just be me but he speaks really really quietly even with a microphone and it makes it very hard to learn and follow along. I can never read his handwriting on the chalkboard. Overall I just feel like he's hard to follow and moves fast and does not explain much
Like most math courses at IU, this is a very exam-based class. Kattner wasn't the best professor but was always happy to answer questions and didn't give any pop quizzes (some other calculus professors do).
Professor Kattner was super nice on a personal level, but as a professor, I found him rather hard to follow. He frequently started talking about tangents during lectures and he mumbles as well. This class is rigorous in general, so be sure to keep up with the homework and go to PASS sessions.
The class is hard but it doesn't help that this professor does not know how to teach. My biggest advice to give is get 100% on every homework assignment to make up for low exam scores. It also helps that he curves the exams. But good luck, honestly I would suggest taking m118 on ivy tech if you can.
Professor Kattner is a nice guy, but his teaching style can be tricky to follow. The class is rigorous, so stay on top of homework and use resources like PASS sessions and Unstuck AI to supplement the lectures.
Nice man but only goes over review problems in lecture and rarely prepares students for exams/ teaches the content. Highly suggest PASS sessions and TFS to ensure good exam grades. Homework heavy and takes forever. Curves exams that cannot be retaken, and mumbles a lot.
The professor is a nice man, but he just cannot teach. He overcomplicates everything and the homework never matches anything that will be on exams. I have never struggled in math except for this class. Learning the material is rough since he is a quiet speaker. I wouldn't take finite through IU.
If you value your sanity do not take this course. Mr. Kattner was very nice and is a great person but finite is just a killer. The homeworks are long and some take 8+ hours-days to finish. This class will make you question everything, so even if you think you'll be fine, don't do it. Take it through ivy tech and save yourself the headache.
M118 is a tough course but if you study hard, go to review sessions, office hours, take advantage of campus tutoring service it is doable. Kattner is ok he just goes through problems/textbook and that's what his lecture is. Exams are hard but there is an option to retake and they look very very similar to the original test.
Kattner is a very sweet person. Multiple homework assignments per week. Exams are difficult but have a decent curve. The final grade is based on three averages, homework, exams, and midterm/final. The weighting makes it difficult to get a decent grade. The exams have one retake each! Use it. Overall was a decent but need to attend to learn!
Finite, 250 students. He knows everything about what he's teaching, and he's obviously very passionate. However, the class is incredibly difficult, as there are mountains of homework every week. You can use ChatGPT to solve most of it, but not understanding the homework well will result in a poor grade on the exams, which are 80% of your grade.
My best advise to anyone at IU: Do you math requirements online/over the summer. Greg is nice, but seriously lacks people skills, and I had to drop this class because of how little his instruction taught me. The math department here is LACKING, and unfortunately Greg Kattner did not help me much at all in learning Finite.
Nice guy, but I would study and learn everything outside of class to understand what's going on. Of course, utilize office hours and other available resources.
Most of the lectures aren't very important and you would need to study outside of class anyways. Skip the 8 AM lecture and an hour of work at night. He's kind but very slow at lecturing.
Lectures can be difficult to understand, so you will probably have to learn material on your own. Tests have one retake each, definitely use them as he uses highest of the two attempts. Lots of hw but overall not a horrible math class
He's a nice guy but his lectures are usually unhelpful. The topic is complicated for most people including myself and I was learning more by using the class materials and watching youtube videos by myself instead of going to the lectures. He does have a big curve on the exams and he posts everything from class.
He's a cool teacher man not gonna lie, but like alot of the topics he posts the videos online and I reccomend you start studying the second you get the new topic, i honestly don't see going to class unless you study as mandatory everything i learned I learned myself he can't really teach but he's a cool nice teacher
This class was honestly very difficult the lectures are huge and really unhelpful along with the tests are really difficult and tend to be very different than any practice problems. The only thing that saved my grades was the test retakes and the student study sessions hosted by a previous student. Overall was my hardest class by far,
