A great teacher. I strongly recommend that u take 220 with him.
VERY HARD COURSE. A LOT OF WORK!!!
excellent high caliber teacher, one of the best in concordia, in my opinion

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I had Lypny a couple of years ago now but I can say that what I learned in that class paid off through my entire B.Comm. If you're scared to work then choose someone else but if you want your tuition dollars to go to use, take him.
AMAZING TEACHER !! Extremely passionate & loves the profession. Very clear, fun & approachable. Makes learning a pleasure. One of the best I've ever been taught by. Highly recommended !!
This guy is the single best teacher I have ever had. G, if you're reading this, you f#@ing ROCK man!! I would take any of this guy's classes. You learn so much, and he makes it fun.
It is very hard to follow in his class, he doesn't use the book, so reinforcing what u heard in class is almost impossible. He makes his own notes that have almost no examples, and the ones that are given don't have any explanations to clarify them. BX
This is a tough course, don't think because he doesn't follow a text book and cracks jokes (some of them aren't that bad) that this course will be a breeze. Lypny makes it tough, yet he is almost always there to answer questions or give extra help.
avoid avoid avoid....he explains very complicated stuff that other teachers dont give for this course. no book, so ur gonna be lost all the semester.he`s got issues.i dont understand how other students rated him good. i bet its him rating himself.

He sucks!!!!!!! Please go by my comment. Save yourself! Don't say no one warned you!!!!
I am warning you NOT to take this guy!!! Please....you will regret it if you do.
Please listen "DO NOT TAKE HIM"
This is not an easy course, but if you want to learn things you better take it. He is fun, kind and really have good taste!!!
He made this boring course material fun, definitely passionate about his job and does it with a sense of humor. No text so it'll be cheap but you've got to attend lectures to understand. Tests were relatively easy, hope you like multiple choice
i found his class rather hard (than the other class I heard) though he's a nice guy, a good teacher (though enter into too much details in the matherials), his class is not boring at all, he makes it fun and appereciable.
avoid avoid avoid a complicated teacher with no book...just little usless notes that will make you life harder.... unfair exams ..got a D+
Amazing prof. His teaching method could be considered alternative, but he's great. If u come to his classes and do the quizzes he gives, u r guaranteed an A. He is the only teacher i've ever had that makes class fun.
best teacher for comm 220 he explains everything very clearly & there are no surprises in his exams, very fair marker & good teacher
his notes are unclear, unfortunately that's all you have since there is no book. just simply can't teach. AVOID HIM, WORST TEACHER.
usual way of teaching 220.must take good class notes, LISTEN and study quizes-ace those, ace the class.
very unclear class, no explaination about exercices at all
he is actually not that bad,,, for this type course you just gotta go to class more often, and once you understand it, the quiz is not that hard!but what he teaches in the class is very very helpful for students who going to take comm 308..
He's a good teacher, and makes class have more fun. However, it is a bit hard for students to understand what he said.
Do all the quizzes, go to his tutorials and go to class, you'll do fine. Everything is multiple choice, which could be a good thing or a bad thing! Check the message board regularly so that you know what's up. He gave interesting lectures, brought in humour. I would take him again.
The subject is extremely dry, he makes it fun! He is humourous, and good looking. You have to listen to him carefully and take notes. Do his Quizzes and go to his tutorials, be active on the jmsb message board and participate in Borsa. You will be Fine.. I will definitely take him again.
he's hilarious!! love this man... his teaching is unique but can be tricky, so better be very careful when doing quizes or exams FUN CLASS
to survive you must go to every class, he doesn't use the book so be there, and go to tutorials they are very helpfull. His tests are in the same format as all his quizes so know them also.going to class, using his quizes and taking down notes from class is the best advice he gave me for his class.
Excellent teacher. Knows his stuff. 9 Quizzes are hard but know them inside out and the Midterm will be a piece of cake because they are the exact same format. MAKE USE OF MSG BOARD (students very helpful), I only did for the final and regretted not using it before. BRUUUUTAL FINAL. STUDY HARD for t
His exams have no relation to the class compared to other teachers!
super interesting and fun, however a little confusing sometimes
He is very knowledgable, know his stuff, his class is interesting. His style is special but easy since as long as you understand his class you won't have problem for the exam. He makes every effort to help students. The best professor in Concordia. I love him! A perfect professor. An advice: take go
An advice: take good note in class. As he said: your life depends on it.
OMG ok, nice thats true, but we are doing a Bachelor degree not a PHD, he confuses his students sometime and the material on which he should test us on, that is why his section is so different then other...much harder not recommended, unless econonomic is your fortay!!
ok there's no doubt this guy is a very good teacher, and his classes are really interesting, but god damnnn what da hell is that final .... just hope u do well enough on the mid term that the bad mark ur gonna get on the final doesnt ruin ur grade.... if ur not prepared to give 110 percent , i dont suggest u take him
Great professor. Don't need to read the textbook. Although he has his own course package, there is not much reading actually. Don't need to spend much time on this course as long as you pay atttention to his class. Final is fair enough. All covered in his class.
Really nice guy BUT: HARD AS HELL!!! Don't let his boyish charm and sense of humour fool you...The material covered in class is muuuch harder than every other section, requires 10 times more work and quite frankly for a 200-level COMM is a waste of energy and a needless HEADACHE.
hey no one can doubt his teaching skills as one of the great professors in concordia. he is funny and down to earth guy. great man but hard exams. but what he teaches does help you in comm 308 and therefore worth taking his special 220 course which is different from all other 220 courses.
This teacher is a nice guy and is always availbale to help his students! he even has study sessions right after class! He is also funny, BUT the material he teaches is 100 times harder than the other sections, so if you are looking to learn, take him, if you just want an easy A, take someone else! OH and make use of the message board, great help!!
He sucks! I had him last year and I almost failed.
I presume that many of you have noticed that many of your classmates are retarded. Those people you see drooling on themselves in class are the ones who suggest you don't take this guy. Best prof in JMSB. Finance students who take this prof will find the next finance courses much easier. Anyone with half a brain will find it interesting.
If you want to challenge yourself, take this prof. If you just want to complete the course and move on, choose a prof. that follows a book as apposed to his own notes package.
Bad sarcarcastic, will say stupid things at you infront of people even if you never talk in class. He hates students who don't understand, will treat them like idiots. No respect towards people. He jokes around in class, Ya, but wait until you ask him a question. He will listen but you will see it in his face what he really thinks...thats ur stupid
A great professor. Those who say he "sucks" or that he "doesn't listen to students and say that he is retarted" are just lazy bumbs who don't want to work and dont try. He is the best professor I had so far in JMSB and probably will stll be the best even after I get out of here. Take him, you'll actually learn something useful with him!!!
One of the best teacher i've had so far. This guy knows his stuff and keeps it interresting. Top-notch teaching methods.
The course is challenging and the teacher clearly enjoys the material and is super enthusiastic. Sometimes his slides can be confusing because his notation isn't very neat, but he's very willing to see students one on one to help them out and he answers promptly to emails. I never got the impression he looked down on questions, even stupid ones.
If you have not yet taken a finance class, do not even think of taking his section. Everything will seem great until after you write the final. The final is SUPER HARD! He is a nice guy, but he wants to challenge his students, he covers his own material which is at a level of difficulty, graduate students would normally face., and he admits it.
horrible teacher, worst i had ever had, sarcastic, laugh at students when yu did not understand. material out of the blue, does not fallow what other com 220 classes are doing. take him at the risk of lowering yur GPA. very risky. No respect!
Hi guys. I'm a 3rd year Finance student and have a friend who is taking Greg as a teacher this semester. I honestly belive that if you have an interest in Finance, that he's the only way to go. He will teach you bits and pieces of behavioural finance and it will give you a good feel of what you'll be facing in COMM 308. Best teacher I ever had!
Makes it harder for no reason, material is interesting but not in the scope of 200 level course. Loads of work. Not worth taking.
Stop whining people! He is not difficult. He chooses to teach the material in a different manner and he makes it seem like a different course than the other 220 teachers but if you pay attention in class and actually work on the quizzes rather than copy the answers from previous years' people then you will do very well.
If you hate reading economics text books then take this teacher
He is the best prof. for the COMM 220 course. At the begining the material might seem overwhelming but in comparison to the other sections who use the book its a breeze. A lot less math and more theory and real life examples. Ended up loving this course!
Yes, he is tough and does challenge you, but you will learn more with this professor than any other teaching the course. One of the best in JMSB.
oh my god, he makes things harder for nothing, definitely not 200 level. He is fun and interesting, but his materials are too hard.
Mr.Lypny was hard compared to other profs for this course, and he did make you work your socks off, but I appreciate his approach. His lectures were interesting, and I liked the approach Lypny took for the course. Didnt have to go reading boring textbooks. Although his notes were unclear at times, overall I learnt a lot in his class.
Difficulty: moderate. Recommended: COMM 308 taken previously or concurrently. How to get an A/A+ the class: 1.Midterm;very easy;read txtbook ch.2-5,7,31;understand easy quizzes fully! 2.W.Assigment:use ideas from ACADEMIC article suggested.3.Final: know topic 6&7 notes/slides by heart (theory). The rest is simple calculation.4.Attend his tutorials.
Although his material is extremely hard (you could say graduate level), he is overall a nice guy. His lectures are interesting and he encourages class participation. It's difficult to get an amazing grade in his class, and there are quite a lot of graphs, but there is no book and you just need his notes. Overall, OK.
Very good teacher who knows and loves the subject he teaches. You have to take notes and go to class though.
Best teacher ever.
G. is amazing. You can learn real stuffs more than just memorize formulas. Because he's in finance department, you need "some" finance background. Attend his tutorials, you will never regret. I do have fun and learn a lot in this class though I don't like Econ courses.
Are you kidding me? Sure, he's funny, animated, and knows what he's teaching, but he makes it WAY harder for nothing!! The best way to pass: find someone who took him before and get their old stuff because it's the exact same. And if you need extra help and can't make his tutorials, then you're screwed! No SOS or gradesavers for this guy! Get out!
Tip: go into the final with an A+. You'll need it cuz you'll be guessing your way through the final after studying a week and a half for it.
Great guy, funny, self deprecating. Interesting lectures. BUT he appears to get a kick out of making people look stupid during exams by asking you things that were never explained or covered properly. Knowing the material means you'll answer about 60-70% of the finals questions rest is gambling. Take him if you wanna lower your GPA.
Yes, he's great; he's funny enthusiastic and all that...But OMG it's NOT EASYYYY to do well in his class. I guessed my way through the final. On top of the difficult course material, he made us participate in a stupid online trading thing called Borsa. And the outome of the trades is partially influenced by luck---and we are graded for that. Part t
I knew the material back to front for the final and I ended up guessing over 40% of the questions on it. There's no way to prepare. Take another section.
Way too hard. At least he's got his looks going for him.
Ya, the final's hard, but he boosts marks and drops ambiguous/unclear questions entirely out. It's not horrible. You might be better off with this teacher since there's no book and a little less work to do.
He made the class very interesting, teaches theory very well (it sticks in your head) but does not explain how to solve the examples. Weekly Quizes are very hard but useful if you can figure out how to do them. Overall a good teacher, might need tutorial help though to help solve examples. You will get either an A or a D.
This teacher is indescribable. Hes the only teacher I've ever had that actually drives you to attend his class and listen to him talk. He is, I believe, the only prof that writes hes own finals, so make sure you thoroughly understand the material inside and out for the exams are rather difficult. Highly recommended.
Fantastic Professor! He is one of John Molson's greatest asset. Take his class!
Best teacher in JMSB. If you're a finance major or have an interest in finance, you're doing yourself an amazing disfavor by not taking his class. He's academic, and makes you love the material. He covers much more material than the other sections, like behaviour finance. TIP: take 308 at the same time (makes it easier and you get more out of it)
This teacher is great. Attend class listen to what he says, do the weekly quizzes seriously and guaranteed an A in the class. I also recommend taking comm 308 at the same time, makes both classes much easier.
Lypny is really a great prof. He knows his stuff inside out and is really gifted for teaching. His exams are not particularly hard, while not being easy either. If you study hard you'll get your A+.
Lypny's section is much harder than the other sections of COMM 220. I put in a lot of effort, and didn't do well. Multiple choice Q's are nearly all calculations. Midterm: 40 MC questions of which 85% first 5 topics and 15% on the articles. Final exam: no articles, 75 MC. 30% from before the midterm (topic 1-5), 35% topic 6,7 & 8. 35% topic 9 & 10.
Fina ppl shud take him. Highly suggest takin comm308 previously or concurrently. His tutorials/office hrs are helpful with the computations and detailed explanations so go with a few questions to ask. Learn the MRS!!! Do quizzes seriously and make sure u read his explanations for the answers. Understand his slides AND notes. Msgboard super helpful!
He's a really awesome teacher, really knows what he's talking about. I think all finance majors should take him before or while taking comm 308 as the two courses compliment each other really well. If you want an easy A, dont take him. If you want to learn and put in a lot of work, take him for sure!!
Amazing Prof!Hilarious too! As a thesis supervisor, you can't ask for more! He answers emails promptly, very helpful, he 's the best thesis supervisor at Concordia. The whole process is done with a lot of humour, hard work and good laughs. And Frankly that;s what keeps you going!
Greg is hysterical! He always gives funny and clear examples on the concepts we learn in class. Yes, his section is harder than the rest and there is no SOS or grades savers for it but if you have interest in his class, you'll love it. Hands down, one of the best teachers in Concordia.
Very funny and kind of geeky. Teaches all the material with his own methods and notes. He doesn't check attendance, but expect to fall behind by missing even one lecture. If you go to EVERY class and listen to EVERY word (and understand) you will get A or B, but his quizzes and exams are nearly impossible to understand unless you've gone to class.
He's simply the best professor at JMSB.
He is the most amazing teacher I have ever taken at concordia. Haven't written the final yet, but up to now the midterm was exactly the weekly quizzes. you can actually do good without going to EVERY SINGLE class , like some people said. You just got to understand those quizzes. By far the most amazing teacher I've come across in two years at JMSB
Great Teacher, mathematical class, very easy to do well.
TAKE HIM. You won't regret it!!
Awesome Teacher! Learn the quizzes and you'll do well on the tests.
Greg is the best teacher I have had!!!
Whether or not you like greg as a teacher will depend on you. I loved this guy, but my friend hated him. He's smart, and he's funny, and if you pay attention, you'll have no trouble on the quizzes, writing assignment and mid-term. However, the final exam is TOUGH, and I highly recommend Gradesavers. Also, his course is different from other 220s.
He is one of the great professors in Concordia. If you want to challenge yourself, take him. He is a great man but his exams are very hard. No book, but a lot of time consuming reading and quiz during the semester. It will be an amazing experience with him in 220. BTW, he will teach fina385 in fall~~, OH, challenging, challenging~~~
Best prof I have ever had. I went to see him about halfway through the course to say I was having trouble and I bent over backwards to help me out. Great sense of humor, very realistic in his expectations of students and really knows his stuff (even if he claims otherwise!). If he teaches a section of your course do whatever you can to be in his.
He's great. most people say the exams were difficult but they were easy for me. Just know ur material! he simplifies studying cuz every week you have take home quizzes and he writes all his own exams. Much easier than regular 220 courses. I would have got an A+ if not for the 500 word essay. I took it too lightly :@
Excellent prof, really tough class if you're like me and don't have much of a talent for economics and finance. But I definitely recommend him cause he's one of a kind! He almost made me like finance... :)
Take Lypny's class if you are intelligent and passionate about financial economics.
Tier 1 professor. brilliant, organized, engaging, and quite the comedian. You will learn A LOT and you better have strong analytical skills otherwise you're in for a bumpy ride! Classes are very math and stats oriented. Perfect FINA prof for an Actuarial student.
I found him to be a very interesting professor, but did not like some things about his teaching style and the topics he chose to emphasize. If you're planning to pursue an MSci or Ph.D in Finance, take him without a doubt. If you want to learn more "real world" material, I would take another prof.
One of the best teachers at JMSB! The class is very different (there is no textbook - instead you read articles from the economist, journal of economics perspectives, fortune magazine, etc..). You must take good notes too which forces you to pay attention in class. Really good sense of humour and just an overall great teacher!
He is absolutely a very good prof. He makes you like the subjects and he explains very well. he works very hard to make you understand...However, if you are not strong in maths and not very good in computer skills...then you may have a hard time in his class
Although I don't like Analysis of Markets, the teacher makes it very interesting by bringing real life examples. He's very very funny and handsome that sometimes I lost my concentration by looking at him and not listening to what he says ;) He doesn't go over the stuff you should know from the past classes, therefore, you have to learn them yourself.
The biggest advantage in taking him was not having to buy the textbook. He simplifies all the concepts and makes a somewhat challenging course a bit easier. You do have to study well and really understand the concepts though, but that should be given in university level. I would recommend!
The best
Best teacher, provides you will all the resources you need to do good in his class, now it's your job to keep up with the lectures, weekly quizzes and article reading which will not only help you solve the quizzes, but will also help you understand the material. I would definitely take him over and over again, LOVE HIM!!!
Blood and tears are required to do well in this course. If you're not ready to work stay away. Highly recommend him if you're interested in Finance/Economics. This course will take a hit on your GPA compared to the other sections. Attend all lectures and do the readings. Quizzes are easy marks, do well on mid-term, final is hell.
Hard material but he makes it very interesting and evry helpful . you do need to attend the lectures
He is probably the best prof at JMSB! Extremely helpful, very clear, and he keeps the material interesting and entertaining! Never in my life I actually learned something in class and enjoyed doing so! Highly recommended!
This teacher is one of a kind. He makes the class very interesting and entertaining. He makes a lot of jokes (some of them are not so funny) He is a very nice guy tho. He is always happy to answer questions and explain things. He talks a lot about his wife and personal like lol He is smart and likes to chalenge his student. WORK HARD!!
Great teacher. His midterm and final is different from other 220 sections. Take him and practice a lot. One of the best JMSB teachers.
Not a hard class if you do the practice problems and Gradesavers was super helpful. I never attended class, and just did Gradesavers and ended up with a good mark. Going to class is useless, he just tells funny stories, you don't learn anything at all. Would suggest taking if you like working hard for your grades.
The professor is amazing, we is the only one who actually taught me something I am using in professional life! Definitely recommended
HIS CLASS IS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER 220 SECTIONS, and for the better. Extremely interesting teacher and probably the one that takes his job the most seriously in the whole school. He's decently funny and he turns a devastatingly awful class into something you can learn from and apply to real life. This class is also easier than other 220 classes.
makes the lecture realllyyyy interesting !
Great prof; takes his job seriously, and makes boring subject interesting and useful!
Lypny is an amazing man! However his course is TOUGH. Comm220 is common to all sections except his (he makes his own midterm and final). If youre into finance hes your man. However, if you are looking for something easier,, take anyone else. His course is different from the rest and thus it lacks support: tutorials do not apply to his class!!!!
It was one of the hardest class I have taken in university and yet, one of the class for which I had the best grade. (A) Why? Because I was passionate about the teacher's material and I attended without exception, every of his tutorials on fridays afternoon, yes.. It is a very interesting man, a comedian and one of the most inspiring teacher I had.
Great professor, great man. Hilarious and inspirational. Greg Lypny knows his stuff and make easy for students who are willing to pay attention and participate. If you skip his classes, no one can save you; but if you go and you listen, you will love economics.
Do not take his course if your major is not economic, especially international students. You gonna understand nothing
Professor Lypny is very knowledgeable and a great mentor. He will make you see things differently and shape your mind in a different direction. I definitely recommend taking 220 with him.
Greg is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Is also very hilarious. You sometimes question his sanity haha. This class is heavy on finance but it makes your FINA classes easier. Take him if you're in finance or econ. Midterm not so bad, but final is tough! Learnt a lot with him, but get ready to read, be challenged & work hard!
Worst mistake I ever made. No textbook. No resources except his lectures which are extremely hard to follow unless you have your CFA. Retook in the common section and got an A. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I am terrible at economics though Lypny takes this course and voids any calculations that may trump the conceptual and relational understanding which set his course apart from the rest. His practice quizzes are what you can expect for his midterm and final. Yes he talk ALOT but makes it very funny. Interesting character! NO TEXTBOOK! AWESOME!
If you're not in finance, do not take him. Worst mistake I've ever made. Does his own midterm and own final. An entirely different class from the other comm220s. If you're in finance, I understand how this can be more of a challenge for you, if not, stay away. He's hilarious, but I retook the class and got an A. Completely different class.
Lypny is a professor that knows his stuff and is passionate about what he does. His course is indeed harder than the other section and you have to put in quite more work, however it if you are in finance or just passionate about learning it general, it will pay off in the future. I guarantee it. Exams are entirely multiple choice.
This was arguably the hardest course I've ever taken in my life. But at the same time, I learned so much... so if you want to learn with a GOOD professor and are not scared of HARD exams, then Lypny is your man.
Simply the BEST ! highly recommend !
Took him for 220. liked him and got a good grade. Thought 385 would be similar. Not at all: no practice questions and no book. The assignment is very long and computer skills-focused rather than financial knowledge based. Take this class if you remember your calculus and linear algebra and if you're really into stats. Otherwise, AVOID.
This teacher applies to a specific kind of students. If you like behavioral economics and have a little base in finance, hes the man. However, even if you are interested and willing to learn, if you don't have these basics, its going to be a pain. Also LACK OF RESOURCES, he doesnt believe in learning by practicing. He's a grade orator but confusing
Best professor at Concordia... no textbook, no group work, only multiple choice in his midterm and final. Final is a little bit difficult but he will add everyone extra marks. Briefly, his section is much easier than others, dont need to put a lot of effort but still can get an above-average grade
Very good teacher and tries to teach you more then just the class material. He is clear and makes complicated material seem very easy. Only problem with Lypny is that he goes so much into his stories that you sometimes aren't sure what this course is even about but if you do the quizzes and follow the readings you'll get a good grade.
I can't lie, this class was pretty difficult. However, I learned soooo much! And if you work hard and attend class you will manage to get a good grade. Prof Lypny is also very helpful, I've never seen anyone respond so quickly to an e-mail! He also masters his material very well. Highly suggest taking him for this class!
Lypny is an overall fair prof. He tends to talk a lot and get off topic during his lectures but it shows how much he care about the subject. Just focus o the notes quizzes. Iyou apply yourself to his class you can pass easily. He has no surprises on His exam since quizzes and midterms are all the same format. Overall he is a fair professor.
Professor Greg is an awesome man ! He is very enthusiastic about Finance. If you want to perform well in his class it is essential to read his class notes and practise all the weekly quizzes on time. If you don't understand a certain concept he will try his best for you to understand. He is accessible outside of class and responds to emails quickly
Really interesting teacher who also knows a lot about finance. If you are really in to Finance, take him, ask questions after class about anything and he will share his thoughts and knowledge. Practice each quiz twice and know exactly how to get the answers, you will be fine for exams.
Amazing guy, but the toughest and most demanding class I've ever taken. He is inspirational and you will learn a lot, but there is a trade off with your grade. Everyone come out of that class with extensive knowledge, but the highest grade was B+, and that's the norm from what I've heard. Take him if you want to be inspired, but not for an easy A.
avoid. way too hard and not fair that he writes his own final. he's the only section not under coordination and so there is no support if you don't understand. get out as fast as you can .
Best teacher I've ever had. He'll always help you as long as you show you're putting in the effort. I managed to get an A+ and wasn't the only one, so it's doable. But be ready to work and you will learn beyond the usual level (i.e. derive formulas and understand where they come from). Register for another section as well in case you don't like him
Disorganized a la max. Goes from chapter 2 to chapter 9 without prior notice. Exams are too hard.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Passionate, brillant, you MUST show up to class. His exams are directly linked to his lectures and assignments. He's really approchable and often make his own tutorial sessions.
He's an amazing lecturer, very organized and clear about his expectations. Don't skip class and be very focused during the lectures, also don't fall behind on the material. go see him for any questions, you'll learn a lot. If you really have trouble following during the first class or two, you should probably switch sections though.
Never learnt so much from a class. He's a true professor, doesn't just read slides and expect you to learn from that. Interesting, but heavy lectures. Not the easiest material, but if you go to class, listen, and take notes, you'll do really well.
Makes an already challenging course even tougher. Gets distracted while lecturing and talks a lot about non course related matters. He is not focused on his students getting a good grade. very proud of his own way of teaching the course which i found very difficult. his slides are incomprehensible. you will have to study on your own a lot.
By far one of the east comm 220 classes. He provides lecture notes however if you expect to pass attend every lecture and write detailed notes. His exams are pretty easy if you attended class
Easily one of the best teachers at JMSB. He knows his stuffs and he wants you to learn. If you attend his classes and ask questions when you don't understand, there's no way you fail. He doesn't use textbook which means that what's in the exam his classes. Everyone who's complaining about him are just too lazy to concentrate in his classes
Excellent professor.
He is not an easy professor and makes you do a lot of work on your own. Provides you with his own notes (no textbook) and the slides are incomplete.
Such a unique professor, updated the song he is listening almost every day through Moodle, suggesting us to read so many interesting papers that might inspire you. And his use his own material included class notes and slides, and his exam is only multiple choice questions which some are easy some are tough .
He's a very passionate and knowledgeable prof. Definitely, take him if you want to learn and be entertained.
Definitely, take him if you want to learn and be entertained. He's a very passionate and knowledgeable prof.
One of the best prof Ive had at JMSB!! Exams are fair and very similar to the homework.
Lypny's course is different from all other sections - but don't worry if anything his comm220 class is easier than the other sections. His tests are almost identical to the practice quizzes that he assigns and all multiple choice/No long formula's whatsoever. Attend the weekly tutorials by the T.A and you'll do fine!
I took Fina 385 with Gregory Lypny , it was the worst thing , his notes didnt cover the whole material, he doesnt rely on any book so you have no practice and you can imagine how terrible you can do in a Fina the exam if you dont practice. He goes off topic in class which make you confused and have more questions
One of the best JMSB teachers. Good lecturer and very knowledgeable. The material will seem intimidating at first (math-heavy), but is ultimately rewarding for those who care to navigate through. His slides are purposely incomplete so you must absolutely attend lectures. His tests are simplified versions of the homework and slides, no surprises.
He literally changed my life and the way I look at finance, his enthusiasm and love for the subject will make you love it, no surprises whatsoever in the exams if you do his assignments and read his notes thoroughly. He literally made me fall in love with finance
Animated & funny lecturer. No textbook used but provides own class notes. You need to attend tutorials for the math. Not a finance student, I find he made the material really interesting. Attending lectures is not mandatory but if you don't it will be really hard to follow & do well on exams. Go see him during office hours. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!!
By far my favorite teacher at jmsb. He's funny and makes class interesting. Take him if you want to learn something!! No suprises on the tests (everything is the same as from the quizzes and notes).
If you are someone who depends heavily on textbook or powerpoint slides, do not take his. His concepts are more abstract and less number crunching based like most 220 classes. Notes are based on his lectures, although he is great at explaining and very entertaining. He teaches in a completely different way yet it is very refreshing.
Prof is funny but he doesnt use textbook and gives you notes that are half complete, wouldnt take again
He doesn't use any textbook, rather he supplies students with his own notes which are riddled with typos and many math errors (he couldn't even do a cross multiplication properly). Do yourself a favour and take someone that will actually teach the course not their version of it. His section is diff from all the rest so youre stuck if you take him
Hard grader, didnt learn a lot from this class. He focuses on the calculations more than on the theory especially in the exams. He still is a very funny teacher...
Professor Lypny is great and often very interesting. However, he rambles a lot and over-complicates the subject a lot. For this class, do all the exercises 2 to 4 times before the final and you will easily ace it. All the people complaining below have simply not studied. All tests are MCQ, there is nothing qualitative like COMM 210.
Professor Lypny, is an amazing teacher! Very passionate in his lectures, it makes you want dive right in with him. Many students, don't grasp the message he tries to send out. He opens unusual doors to think deeper than the average teacher's do. Provides clear understanding and meaning of each aspect of the material. An inspirational being!
To be honest this is the best course (comm 220) I had ever taken in jmsb the teacher is caring if you put in the work, people complain that it's too hard, but if you go to class and actually do the homework it is a piece of cake, I finished the class with an A- 0.7 points close to an A knowing that I could have studied more, I simply loved it
What a guy! He is hilarious and a genius! Definitely a fair grader (you can get an A if you put in the work), but you must go to class and READ HIS NOTES (they will save you) because there is no info on the slides. The assignments are a bit tough but with the notes and the TA facebook page, it's very doable!
I was extremely hesitant and scared to take this prof, especially since his lecture is completely different from other profs. I must say i was pleasantly surprised by this prof. His exams are a copy paste of his quizzes and past midterms. Attend tutorials and you will get an easy A. He is caring , funny, and passionate. You will truly learn a lot.
His classes are extremely easy if you study his lecture notes, past quizzes, and attend tutorials. If you complain that this class is hard, it is because you haven't tried nor put in effort at all. I was so scared to take him, but it was the best decision I made. You can easily get an A grade.
yoooo this prof is the BOMB lol. Take him and you'll see.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Traditional economics with a behavioral twist paints a great picture of the world we live in. Forces you to think critically about topics giving you a deeper understanding and the ability to apply the learning to real life. If you want to really get something out of your courses TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Lypny is a very funny guy and has his own tests and material that is different from the other 220 sections. theres only 9 chaoters Vs. 13. Theres no need to attend class, as reading his pdf notes and doing the homework was enough to get 90%+ in midterm & final. midterm was almost an EXACT copy of the practice exam he provided. the final wasnt hard.
With Lypny, you really need to listen and take notes during class. There's no textbook and you need to search for all the required readings online. The midterm was exactly like the practice one he gave plus the homework. Although, the final exam is fairly different and way harder (don't bother with the practice final, it's a joke)
He's honestly a very fair teacher, and if you go to class and you actually pay attention, you are guaranteed a decent grade. Everything he says in class is on the midterm/final, and his homework's (which are optional) are representative of the midterm and final. I didn't read a single article of his and still got a decent grade by going in to class
Pull a Usain Bolt on this one. Youll need to run as fast and far away as possible.
I really gave it my all. I went to his lectures, I took notes, I read ALL his Pdf notes, took notes of those notes, re-did the homeworks MANY TIMES, got a great grade on the midterm... but then came his final. It was very difficult even for me who did everyhting possible. Does not do problems in class. Horrible.
If you're taking COMM 220, do NOT take him. He has his own notes (literally just jokes). There's no book to follow, your homework doesn't help for the test. You have 2 Assignments (if you're 0.2 off you don't get the mark). You can't even attend SOS or tutorials because it's not even the same material. So if you start bad, it's over. Don't do it.
weird because you wanna like him because he's trying to be relatable with the youth but its cringe af and has big OK boomer vibes. Don't take this class if you care about your GPA.
Professor Lypny is honestly a genius, to be completely honest he does use some over complicated words sometimes and does over complicate a few things, however if you do the homework and study on a day to day basis you will get an amazing grade, wish I knew that for the midterm,he is honestly amazing,if you think this is an easy A HAhaA guess again
Very passionated teacher but makes easy theories look complicated and rambles A LOT. Be ready for very sarcastic email replies that never answer your actual questions. the amount of work you have to put in this class to understand is huge
He usually talks during 30 min to make a single point, total waste of time. He thinks he can do whatever he wants, as Concordia will never quick him out due to his tenured status. To get a good grade you have to pay a tutorial to get access to exclusive midterms/finals(That are 50% copy/paste). He can be so disrespectful when answering emails.
The negative reviews are quite unfair. If you work hard, you will get a good grade for SURE. The only feedback I'd give is that he doesn't dive into the math elements very much. He goes into detail (like a good teacher would).. You will come out smarter. For those who don't like him using a big word here & there, go watch Sesame Street.
RUN!!! Look he ma have been a great person when we still had classes in-person. The same cannot be said about online classes. He posts pre-recorded lectures every week. His slides provide you with the bare minimum. The textbook, which he wrote, lacks in so many aspects. 'I'll leave it to you to...' - Lypny IYKYK.
Worst professor I ever had in Concordia. Nonsense textbook with a lot of mistakes. When you remind him about the mistake he easily changes the topic. and humiliates you. For our online final exam, he gave us 60 questions and 3 h time. All of the questions were tough and required heavy calculations. AVOID AT ALL COST
One of the worst professors I had in my whole life. Funny enough, I was his top mark ( B+). The average for his final exam was 49/100 ( I received 70 ) , but he didn't curve the grades. He simply added up all my grades and gave me B+. His Booklet has some mistakes and when you tell him, he simply ditches you. It's total waste of time and energy!
AVOID AVOID AVOID
He doesn't provide a book, rather his own class notes pdf and slides, which might sound cool and practical, but the examples he puts in often lack of annotations which make them very confusing. He only puts .mp3 recordings to explain the slides which makes it this much more confusing. Very few resources to work with. FINA385 is easy, but not w him.
Horrible, avoid at all costs. His lectures are pre-recorded mp3 files, and he hosts tutorials once a week, mostly talking about wolfram mathematica. His book is very vague and doesn't go into much detail, especially not about the math behind the concepts. He makes everything a riddle instead of giving a direct explanation. Class average was 50.
Easy course, very difficult with this professor. Does not cover the material done in other classes. Complicates the simple concepts. Avoid at all costs.
although he's passionate, he does not teach the material taught in other sections. assignments are super long and only worth 5%. recorded lectures are only audio files. avoid at all cost
Worst teacher I've ever had to take. His class isn't really a class I'd consider it more of a 4 month long riddle that will stress you out. His class will have you listening to 2 hours of horrible quality audio files before class and then he will still somehow go over the 3 hours allotted of live class time every week . Avoid at all costs
Imagine you didn't know how to bake a cake at all so you take a class to learn. In that class the teacher shows you the first step skips everything else and just pulls out a pre made cake. Would you know how to make a cake? No. Well imagine that with finance but even worse. Good luck to anyone who has to waste their time and money with the teacher
While reading past reviews, I did not think he could possibly be as bad as people said he would be. I am an A average student and have always done very well in every class, except his: worst grade I have ever received at Concordia. People in other classes aren't even able to do what he asks us to do. Do not take if you care about your GPA!
He is extremely intelligent but not at all a good teacher. His notes are terrible and no matter how many times you read them you wont understand. In his class I didn't understand a thing and then retook the class and it was much more clear & easy. He expects you to basically be able to derive formulas from his notes which most cannot do.
