Very fair grading scale but he grades harshly
I'd give him a zero if I could
Very brilliant man and knows everything he is talking about. Easy class
Concepts of calc 2 are hard, but prof. marks is a genius and will help you however he can, regardless of office hours!
HE IS MY HERO....TRUE GENIUS
Professor Marks is God. He went to MIT undergrad and Cal Berkley for grad and PhD. Sometimes during class we can see his brain pulsing. He can bend markers with his mind too, he is such a genius.
i think he knows he is ****ing brilliant and that his class is ****ing hard and that he's the ****ing man so he tries to adjust his grading scale for us (i got a freaking 40 and still got a C!!!)

He is the DEVIL!!! If you have the option of taking him for a class, for the love of God, DON'T DO IT!! He will ramble in class about mathematics that only he and the genius in class will understand. By far the WORST prof. I've had in my life - AVOID!!
He is a great guy who definitely knows his stuff. He is is smart beyond belief, but the bad thing is he assumes everyone else is just as smart. He will keep talking about things that our way over everyone's head, and he is a very hard teacher with homework.
Great teacher. Only made it to about 7 classes out of the whole sem due to it being a 8 in the morning. Very smart and very fair. If you like math take this genius.
real good, knows what he is talking about
horrible. extremely hard.
Marks is a friggin' genius! He's insane! He explains things extremely well and answers any of your questions. It's a tough class but he adjusts the grading for it. I got an A with an 80%! I definitely reccommend his course :0)
if uwanna take this class..make sure u get a tutor because he is the most worthless teacher i ahve hadd....talks about one thing in class and assigns something else for hw....if you like teaching yourself, be my guest and take this class..!!!
If you took any math at all in high school, this class is just a repeat of it. Easy. Doesn't take attendance, but go to class b/c he'll do homework problems on the board for you.
If you're taking Calc II, take Marks! 80% is an A, and he really knows his stuff. He explains concepts well, and is always willing to help you outside of class. The tests are pretty much repeats of homework and in-class problems. He's also big on group work.
he's ok. he's one of those teachers that's smart but can't really show his thought process very well. he's actually said that he doesn't know how to explain key concepts in my class. hw is hard so find a calc friend in your building. tests are fairly easy. if you go for help sometimes he helps you to get the wrong answer and then takes off points
Although his hw problem sets can be hard at times he's a great teacher. I love the grading scale...a 50% is a C...he really makes you work for your grade! Always willing to help and really loves math. He's awesome! :-)
Dr. Marks is a good guy, very helpful. He makes himself really available to ask questions and is a very easy grader on exams. His grading scale is awesome. Take him if you're serious about learning math, not just getting a class out of the way.
Gives HW as if Calc is the only class you are taking. Test questions not based on work done in hw nor class. Teaches material not useful for doing well Very Enthusiastic but not focused on teaching course material.Teaches unsolved problems in the history of math.Very random test questions. Unless you know calc 2 frontwards backwards left and right
Very enthusiastic teacher. 80%=A- now. Very kind. Doesn't take attendance, but go to class because he covers concepts not in book. Takes a genuine interest in how you are doing. He's a math genius. Just talk to him about the millenium problems. you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know. Chooses hw problems randomly and grades randomly too
Enthusiastic teacher, willing to help but if your not a math genius, you'll hate this class. Final is 40% of the final grade so if you bomb it, your screwed. Test questions are unclear and not anything like the homework. I wouldn't recommend him unless your great at math.
Difficult? maybe but if you have any question he will help you. Calc 2 is an important fundamental class and should take a bit of your time. Study for the test by using the homework and if you understand it then youll do fine
Insane teacher. Very hard and demanding. he is a theoretical thinker. Final is 40% of the final grade. Very enthusiastic, but his hw problems will kill you. only ONE TA could help with ANY of his homework. Though group work was not permitted on 1/2 the assignments, it occurred regardless.
Absolutely ridiculous! If you value your GPA, do NOT take this class! I used to like math, but this class made me hate it. He goes way too fast and thinks everyone is a genius like he is.
Do the homework early in the week to leave time to ask questions - you'll need it. Go to class, do the homework. Easy B, doable A.
Excellent Teacher. Absolutely Brilliant. Willing to help like no other. Class is very demanding. Tests are only 5 questions and they are really hard. If you never heard of Putnam you will. Lets just say his homework takes hours and hours when done by a group in his office with his help each week. If you actually work really hard you can learn alot.
his logic is crazy, he comes up with the strangest things. It is better to just find a study buddy in the class than to listen to him because he doesn't understand that you don't know what he is talking about. when asked to explain something he says it in the exact same way that the did the first time.
He's very very smart, pretty easy going (especially if you take the Putnam.) Sometimes he gets a distant stare on his face and looks up at the corner of the room, and just rambles about stuff that noone comprehends, then tells you its not on the test. But, it's pretty funny, you can tell it's coming. Overall, not bad if you like Calc.
Class is challenging if you can't speak math. Material is very interesting and Marks teaches through example. If you don't understand something, either 1) ask him or 2) read the section in the book. Grading is very lenient. I recommend.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Does not care about teaching. Strays wildly from other sections, paces poorly, and is not interested in offering help (only available 1 hour per day). Waste of YOUR money!
He will give you extra review time if you ask him. But IMO the final is freaking ridiculous. Hardest possible questions and worth 45% of your grade! Even if you were doing well in the class prior to the final, be prepared to bomb if you mess up the final! Silly Gregory, proof by induction is for advanced math students! Not FRESHMAN undergrads!
Marks is a nice guy, but a real ignoramous, despite getting a PhD from berkeley. He thinks everyone is as smart as he is, and he makes the tests accordingly, including an impossible final that is worth 45% of the final grade. AVOID HIM
The smartest decision I made last semester was to DROP GREG MARKS' CALC II CLASS!! He is too smart to be a professor! Even though we want to study math, maybe not everybody is a genius who can teach themselves calculus. This man is the reason people have to retake Calc II...beware freshmen!
Hardest class I have ever taken. His tests are only five questions but are nearly impossible. His final if 45% of your grade and you won't have enough time to finish it. Spent 10 hours a week on the homework alone.
What will kill you in this class is not engaging Dr.Marks. He will answer questions, he will explain any step about anything on the board. He doesn't check homework, but part of the grade is giving homework solutions up on the board.
Great! I learned more in Dr. Marks' class than all my other math classes put together.
his explanations are sometimes a little lofty, he is obviously a very good mathematician with a vigorous interest in teh subject but sometimes what he said went over our heads. However, when you tell him so he is quick adn gracious to simplify matters.
best math teacher so far at slu! interesting, funny, really smart. u can tell he loves what hes doing, very helpful and eager to explain things to you outside of the class. the first exam was way too long but doable if you remembered everything in the homework.
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! Only take his class if you have taken Calculus before. Make sure to get resource books, too, because the one used is AWFUL in explaining anything. The problems he gives are intense. The tests are your only grades, besides some board work, and they are nearly impossible. The only thing I liked was his grading scale. It is LOW!
I actually took four classes from Dr Marks as an undergrad at SLU. I just completed my PhD at another university. :D I am eternally grateful to Dr Marks for the countless hours he spend helping me, and I honestly don't think I would have survived grad school without the foundation he gave me. Wonderful, amazing professor.
You will learn the material very well, but unfortunately, you won't be tested on the material. Instead, you will be tested on derivations of the material after extreme mutilation. Be prepared for 10+ hours of homework each week and thoughts of suicide after each test.
He is a brilliant man, but he can't teach. His inability to teach made me lose more than a letter grade. I studied 24 hours for his final, so I knew all the material, but Marks was still able to screw me over. He put material on the test that we never covered in class; the text was useless. His class was a death sentence to my gpa.
The last two exams, which were two days apart and comprised 50% of the grade, were based on creativity and not an objective understanding of course material. What should be reserved for Math competitions is the main determining factor of 4 hours of GPA. Your entire semester of work can crumble beneath you at his whim, leaving you nothing to show.
Hardest class I've taken here, but the professor explains the concepts very clearly.
Brilliant prof.
Dr. Marks is a great professor, definitely the best math teacher I've ever had. He made prob/stat fun, and was always willing to help. His examples are interesting, and his class in general is very enjoyable. His class is NOT EASY, but if you work hard, you'll get the grade you deserve.
Very helpful in class and out, goes out his way to explain stuff, definitely recommend!!
great prof! you will probably understand concepts during class. but his tsts are really hard! practice tests and homework problems are not the same as his tests. he expects you to use your creativity and work very very very very hard for an A.
He's a brilliant man, but his expectations for students are unrealistic. I worked hard on the homework, and sometimes the pHD student math tutors couldn't even help me. Tests are impossible. I just finished calc 3 and I can't even do the tests he gives to calc 1 students. If you want to learn math realistically, and value your GPA, DON'T TAKE MARKS
Pros-Incredibly smart and interested in his subject. Very devoted, adaptable, and free with his time. Cons-First two tests, EASY. Last two, RIDICULOUS. I had a very comfortable A before those two. Has trouble dumbing it down. If I can emphasize anything, it would be that he gave me the heaviest workload I have ever received. Huge weekly packets.
Dr. Marks is VERY smart and enthusiastic about statistics/math. The material was fairly tough, but it was interesting and the tests were easier than they could have been. Tests were open book and open note, and his grading scale was definately in the students' favor. I highly recommend Dr. Marks' class.
He is really smart and really loves math, unfortunately his intelligence is almost overwhelming when he is explaining examples. He is really nice, but his tests can be incredibly difficult. He is almost too smart to be teaching Calc III. I am pretty sure I left the final exam in tears. He is a really nice person though.
Recommended, if you're truly interested in learning mathematics. If you just want to get through it, go elsewhere. Tends to teach a bit above the students heads, which isn't a bad thing, as it shows them the next level to strive for. Talks quickly, but will gladly spend as much time as you want/need to clarify. Nice, approachable guy, too.
His tests are super hard. I thought I was failing the class, but ended up with a B in Prob & Stat for Engineers. If I got a B then there are probably quite a few people that got A's...I could never find my P-values in the book's tables..He impossible to reach in office hours sometimes because he will talk with one student as long as it takes.
I was scared going into the class because I heard it was impossible. His tests are incredibly difficult but fortunately he is very willing to provide help outside of class and genuinely cares about his students. He will go out of his way to help you (i.e. extra office hours, lots of handouts) great guy.
Great Professor. Intimidating at first, sometimes he even seems too smart to be teaching Calc 3. He was extremely helpful during office hours and was very approachable. Although his tests are difficult, the grading scale is fair. You will learn far more in his class than in any other class - and you will really learn the material he covers.
Marks is a wonderful teacher. Go to his office hours whenever you can. He is so helpful and will above and beyond for his students. Tests are difficult, but he gives practice exams, do those. His grading scale is very fair, and if you put in effort you will pass easily.
One of the toughest professors I've ever had. He has a 20% curve, yet people still do extremely "low" on tests, so DO NOT come into this class expect the curve to save your grade. He is a GREAT teacher, knows his material and can explain, however, WRITES AND PROCESSES math very fast, would be hard to write and keep track. Extremely open to help
He is awesome.
He's one of those professors who is very intelligent but does not really know how to teach. I can learn more by watching Khan Academy than actually going to his lectures. Test are also tough, but the huge curve in his grading scale at least makes them fair. Overall, he's not a nightmare, but would recommend someone else if they fit in your schedule
I took Calculus II and Discrete Math, and both courses were extremely difficult. I took Calculus AB in high school and did very well, but these courses were very difficult for me to excel in due to a very heavy course load. The homework was worth 6% of our grade in each of these classes, and I worked roughly 25 hours a week per class.
He really cares about his students and knows what he's talking about. The material was just so different that it took time to get used to it. You should spend lots of time outside reading the book and reviewing the class notes to fully understand the concepts. There were only 4 tests and he always promoted his office hours that were almost everyday
He gives homework as if you have no other classes. You'll seriously work on homework for 15-25 hours per week won't understand any of it. Don't bother going to the tutors for help on his homework; I've been to three different ones, and none of them could solve any of the problems I had questions on. Masters' help center is just as useless.
Horrible teacher. None of the tutors could help me. They told me I very Knowledgeable in calculus. However I still manage to a 5 out of 100 even though on one of the questions all I did was forget to simplify and he gave me 0 points on that question. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never had a professor quite like Marks. Highly inrelligent, but lacks the ability to teach and communicate with class. Workload was tough and infuriating considering it's little impact on your final grade. Tutors couldn't help, and if you've never taken a calc class before this one is definitely not for you.
This is the worst professor I've ever had in college. Completely does not know how to teach the material and expects you to know everything beforehand. Will most likely be dropping this class because it is nearly impossible. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Awesome professor. Had him for 3550 and 3110 and made me fall in love with differential equations and linear algebra. Incredibly passionate about math. Really cares about his students. Take him if you can; you will learn a lot of math!
Professor Marks is hands down my favorite professor at SLU. His classes are by no means easy, and he makes you work HARD for your grade. He challenges you in ways you never would have expected in math, and I have never learned more in a semester course. If you are truly interested in math, the grade will come with the work you put in.
Although he is a nice guy and a math genius, avoid his Calc2 class if possible. In class he focuses on overly complex, esoteric applications/extensions. You essentially have to teach yourself everything. He grades very harshly on tests and gives little partial credit. If you have to take his class (like I did), make sure you study A LOT.
His lectures can be very confusing because he processes math very fast. You won't understand much concepts deeply if you just attend class and not do any extra work like reading, doing hw, or searching up Youtube videos. The materials for the class are also different from other computational math classes so it will be harder to adjust.
PF Marks is an enigma. He may just be the most confusing teacher I've had in my life but also I come out of his class better. He is a bit robotic but also clearly kind and passionate. The class is hard so hit the books if you want to do well and for the love of god try to pay attention in class and enjoy the ride! Also he programmed his own website
This is the worst class I've ever taken. I have no clue how people can give him anything above a 1. Never take anyclass by this man. This is Calc G (Greg) because it's his own breed of math. 58% of your grade is decided by finals week so don't even go to class. HW is useless w/ each question counting as less than 1% of your final grade, would r8 0
A terrible professor. Does not explain in enough detail compared to homework or exams. No wiggle room in exams either; only 4-5 problems per test.
Prof. Marks is a very clear lecturer. He presented material logically and made it interesting, always encouraged questions and rescheduled office hours to accommodate student schedules. He's very approachable, one of the few professors I've had who I felt cared a lot about their students.
Hard class. Does not give extra credit. Strict grading.
Dr. Marks is hands down the worst teacher I have ever met. He takes pride in seeing people confused when he teaches new concepts and will never explain something in more depth unless you go to his office hours. Also, over half of your grade is decided in the last week of class. The last test and final is worth almost 60 percent of the overall grade
This professor was the worst. He asks many open-ended questions on esoteric subsets of problems but does not teach critical concepts. You are better off teaching yourself this course. He does not synthesize different ideas, and seems to enjoy the confusion and struggle of his students sadistically. There are 3 exams total(noncalculator) DO NOT TAKE
The BEST Math Professor I have ever had. If you are good at math, take him and you will absolutely fall in love with the course, materials, and the way he teaches. DO NOT TAKE if you are not good at math, seriously. You will have a hard time keeping up with how fast he goes. Homework and attendance are optional.
He seems to care about his students and 100% loves math, but not the best professor. I had him for calc 1. he didn't explain the concepts well, only taught via writing on the chalkboard, and most problems given were difficult (homework, in class, & tests). There were 4 tests (including final) & only the top score is your grade
Dr. Marks is a very tough teacher. He appears to be one of the most intelligent and well-read teachers I have come across but expects a lot from his students and is not as receptive to asking for help as some other teachers have been. The homework is a lot. Dr. Marks applies a pretty heavy curve to almost everything we do which relieves much stress
Tests are like 80% of your grade. He's a genius but his lectures are very fast paced, can get really confusing, and it's super easy to fall behind. If math is not your strong subject please do not take this man. Homework is 10-15 questions per week, individual questions might take hours. We occasionally spent entire class periods over one question.
Professor Marks is interesting, intelligent, and clearly passionate about the course material. Unfortunately he expects you to also be at the level he is in terms of your engagement with the course which entails a lot of time and hard work which could be better spent if you just took an easier professor.
Dr. Marks is wildly intelligent and passionate about math. While attending his lectures aren't necessarily required you will want to make sure you attend as he does unique problems that aren't in the textbook but will show up on your exams. He is probably harder than other professors but he will also teach you three times as much. He loves matrices
His lectures are extremely confusing, unless your really smart in math like im saying extremely smart then think about taking this. Professor Marks is really smart so he complicates everything and makes it seem way harder than it is i would not recommend if you want to learn actual calculus please just dont, but hes nice
If you are looking for a class to take Calculus I, this is not the professor you should take. Although he is a nice guy, I went to the bush student center for math tutoring and the tutor had to take out his Calc 2 and Calc 3 notes to understand the additional questions that are on his homework. You will not have a strong base in calc DONOTTAKE.
Warning. Please do not take this man. His homework, lectures, practice tests, and tests are all in tangents. He only has 3 tests and a midterm, with the tests being 5 questions each. The practice tests did not reflect the concepts seen on the actual test. Also, he over complicates everything and tutors are unable to help with his hw questions.
Dont be fooled by the positive reviews. Half our class for our first calc test received scores below a 50 since his tests are only 5 questions, He also has weird standards with how he wants answers. 7 of us dropped midway and switched to another calc professor (took begging). And don't get me started on his homework. Do ur mental a favor and SWITC.
This class was my first ever B, and I FOUGHT for it. Dr. Marks is very smart, but isn't great at explaining in a way that makes sense to people lacking a doctorate in mathematics. Don't be fooled by what he puts on the practice exams (it's all fair game), read the textbook before lectures, and utilize tutoring. It'll save your life.
You need a PHD to clearly understand his incredibly fast paced lectures. Choose any other professor if your not trying to be a mathematics major.
In the history of my college career, this is the first time I failed a test, and I tried my best to prepare for it. He assigns lots of problems on the homework and the problems are hard. The first exam, which I thought I did well on, I failed. However, he is pretty nice. Had to go to his office hours. Not helpful for the general case.
Gang, I am telling you, you are not as tough as you think you are. This class was the one I had to dedicate most of my time to. The assignments are so long, it will take you hours to do. There are 3 tests, and if you miss one you get an auto 0. The tests are a max of 5 questions and can even give you negative scores on them. Don't take him!!!!!!!!!
His weekly calculus homework was extremely unnecessarily long (requiring all answers in complete sentences explaining why you did it that way). He also does not use Canvas, instead using his own website that is super janky and hard to navigate. He is pretty clear about his expectations from the get-go, though. Avoid if you can.
Dr. Marks is one of the most intelligent people at SLU. He studied at MIT/Berkeley and it shows. If you are not very interested in math and very willing to devote 6+ hours a week on homework, do not take. If you are genuinely interested in math, he is absolutely phenomenal. I learned so much from him but know that many of my classmates had to drop.
He is not professor. He is more like mathematician. I am not saying that his personality is awful or terrible, but I'm saying that he's not a right person who can teach student with the same level. We don't have Canvas, instead he has his own page, so we'll never know our grade at the very end. I'm REALLY excited to see what I'll get in this class.
Dr. Marks is a very intelligent man who knows a lot about math, however, his lectures require a PhD to understand. The coursework is irrelevant to anything an engineer will ever have to do. Students are discouraged from showing up because it does not help you succeed in the course. The textbook will be your best friend. All I can say is good luck.
Dr. Marks's course is strict grading, theory dumped without explanation, and exams built to punish rather than teach. Practical examples are nowhere to be found, and questions earn only dismissive scrutiny. The class is so needlessly hostile that it stands out as a miserable exercise in torture and disappointment.
Good luck. 3 exams and a final is all your grade. 60% of your grade is unknown till it's too late. AEROS PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. If you must be prepared to put more work into this class then any other course you have taken. If you don't do exactly what he expects on the exams it will be wrong. I think he enjoys seeing us fail.
We had exam 3 the Friday before Monday final. Asked him to move it to Wednesday so we can see how we do before the final and he said no that was the point. With a smile on his face.
Very harsh grader, almost never awards partial credit, even when the method is correct. Explanations are vague, and topics are not broken down in a straightforward way, so you really need a strong math background just to keep up. The final is 40% of the grade and the exams make up the rest. Overall not personable and hard to understand.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER- IF YOU ARE AERO OR ANY ENGINEER, DO NOT TAKE HIM, TAKE IT OVER THE SUMMER AT A DIFFERENT UNIVERSITY. All the horror stories are true. His class is nearly impossible. NO CANVAS, so you will not know your grade. Exams 94% of your grade, the final is 40%. The third exam is two days before the final, SO GOOD LUCK!! DO NOT TAKE!!!
An incredibly intelligent man. If you want an easy class then stay away. However if you are committed and want to learn and grow as a student, Dr. Marks is an incredible teacher to have. He will help you go far in the math world.
He is the personification of rigor. Heavy exams and a crushing evaluation. Consistency is vital, making his office hours pivotal for success. I derived more knowledge here than through the entire Calculus sequence. Enroll to reach your global maximum. Deviate if you choose to remain a trivial constant.
I really wanted to like Dr. Marks. He is clearly someone who is highly passionate towards math but can't teach. Syllabus mentions emphasis on knowing the process for the math, over 100% complete knowledge. A great example would be flawlessly solving on an exam, only to get a 2/25 for one subtraction error. Avoid like the plague, everything is true.
