One of my best professors ever. Very fun and interesting class. Matoesian has a great sense of humor and is ready to help you if you need it.
he's a great professor. i learned a lot and if you go to class and take notes its the easiest A you will ever get!
awesome teacher.i enjoyed coming to class everyday. i ended up claiming criminal justice as my major cuz i enjoyed this class so much. easy tests. easiest A to earn.
Great professor, great sense of humor, but somewhat cryptic in regards to the material that will be on the test. You might have better luck talking to him individually about your questions if he won't answer them in class.
great teacher. makes lectures fun and interesting. if u come to class and take notes everyday you'll do just fine on tests. tests are on lecture...reading the book alone is not enough. dont even need to read the book
Easiest professor I've had! He is really funny and his test are literally under 15 min long. He also tells you exactly what's gonna be on his exams. I highly recommend him for this class. Easiest "A" you will ever get.
He's a good teacher with some funny personal stories.
This guy was the coolest. He was funny, and his lectures were great. Easy notetaking, tells you almost everything thats gonna be on the tests.
Every lecture he gives you a question or two that are on the test. When the test comes u got them all. Easy readings. Funny stories or facts... TA's - to each their own :-)

This is class is fun/easy. Just go to lectures because he will give u ALL the questions to test during the lecture. His stories are hillarious. I know alot of people who havent boughten the book and are getting B's. If you put some effort in this class you can easily get an A. Everyone should definately take his class.
The best professor for Criminal Justice. So good, I might consider taking the Law and Society class with him this coming summer. Nice guy.
Crappy teacher. Had him as a TA and he sucks. Honestly.. u can take his class but dont expect to learn much.
Easy fun class!
He is an okay teacher, and he is a nice guy, but I wished he gave us some extra credit, and the final was unnecessary. Instead, what he could have done was have us drop one of the lowest exam grades, though they were easy, simply because we all have a bad day every now and then, and use the final to help replace out lowest test score.
Sucks. He is an aloof idiot who doesn't teach for crap. If you want to learn anything about CJ, make sure you get a good TA. (Or just wait a semester for a different professor.)
He is easy, funny, and cool to listen to in class, but he could be kind of arrogant in person. His papers were a joke, and they were only 2.5 points each. I learned a lot, but I wanted him to give us more of the basic concepts from the book and less of his sixties and pot lectures.
Aloof, but helpful when possible
Kool as hell
PROFESSOR WAS GOOD, TOLD EXACTLY WHAT WAS ON TESTS BUT NOHELPFUL OR UNDERSTANDING
AWESOME GUY! loved his lectures
best professor ever!!
Matoesian is a great professor. He is very funny and makes class entertaining. This course is extremely easy. It consists of 4 tests, one short essay and a final exam. Every lecture he gives you one or two questions that will be on the exams.
Loved this professor! I'd laugh everytime he walked into lecture with his hardcore sunglasses!! Has some pretty funny stories and easy tests.
he loves to talk about himself. his lectures are boring and he believes he is funny...hes not. he acts like he is there because he has to be and makes the most of it. easy class. all you need to do is go to class the day before the test and study what the TAs tell you to.
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS BEFORE EACH EXAM AND I GAURANTEE YOU'LL GET AN A! I found that out before the last exam...but I wish I did it all semester!

Easy teacher
I am sick of people saying this is an easy blow off class. One, I will give you all a stat that only 22 students got A's in the fall 2007. There is only Four test grades and a 5 point opinion paper. If you screw up on one exam then you have just said bye to a letter grade. Also, if you miss a grade my ONE POINT good luck trying to get it rounded.
Those people who said this class was easy, did they look at their grades before or after commenting? You have to work really hard to get A or B for this class. I think only 22 out of 300 students got an A in fall 2007.
I don't really like his grading system -4 tests + 5pt paper=100 points. I messed up on the first test and after that there was no way I could get an A. He offers people who MISSED the test to take them during finals days but no retake for people who messed up a test. So I ended up with a B :/. This is NOT a blow off class if you want to get an A.
I rarely come to his lec, Every time i come,i listined to him talking about his wife. You need to make sure that u are doin good from the first exams Many people ended up with Bs because they mess on one of the exams you need to buy the book so u could study or u screwed.
Boring, arogant full of himself. I liked CJ until I met him and learned nothing so far.
This class was pretty easy. Just attend lecture and read the book. You don't have to attend lecture, but it helps and the stuff covered can be on the test. The tests are pretty straightforward multiple choice questions, not a lot of thinking involved. The opinion paper is also short, so if you don't like writing this is a good class.
First test is the hardest and worth the most points. Second, third, and fourth tests are really easy. Pretty funny guy, not always in office hours, multiple choice tests
I did not like this teacher at all, although he makes many attempts at humor (most failed) his teaching style is extremely boring and he often went our entire 2 1/2 hour class without asking the students for a single piece of feedback. Clearly he is a very smart man, just not very engaging, also pretty unclear and repetitive.
He is a pretty good professor. If you're taking him for the first time, then he takes some time getting use to, but all in all he easy. You just gotts find steady ground when it comes to his note taking. He do not give reviews, and usually there is no papers, u do need to read here and there, but thats all to it.
He really tried to engage his students, but really he would drone on for 3 whole hours speaking about anything other then the material. I learned absolutely nothing in this class, and I would never ever recommend this teacher to anyone at all. His tests do not make sense, what you discuss in class is never in the exam even if he says it will be.
If you attend the class and take notes along with reading the book you'll do great. He does tend to babble on about other things, but his sense of humor helps alot. He does tend to ramble a bit, but if you pay attention you will surely receive and A. Oh, and he loves it when you participate in class discussion.
The course itself is rather not-interesting but he tries to help by cracking jokes every now and then. Which helps some, his tests are pretty straight forward hes gives you notes on what exactly will be on the exam but you also have to read.
Matoesian is an easy going, funny guy. Hes always cracking jokes throughout class. He posts notes on blackboard that you basically need to memorize verbatim for the exams. If you go to class and take really good notes on top of what he posts on blackboard then youll get an A. Id definitely recommend taking a CLJ class from him before he retires.
A great guy. His humor made the class a lot more interesting and used simple/funny examples to help us memorize things. His lecture notes are straightforward and his exams are easy as long as you read and attend class and take good notes. Not an easy A but it is possible to get one. The text can be tough to understand, but isn't so bad. Take him.
This class was pretty easy. Just attend lecture and read the book.
Attendance is not required, so I fell into a trap of never going. Class work is minimal- with only 3 multiple choice exams, which can be either a good or bad thing depending on how well you do. I did poorly after the first exam, since there were no study guides. Lectures were fun but often went off track with discussion of his family popping up.
Interesting class. You have to do the reading and go to lecture because he gives out all the test questions. Yepp do the readings. The tests are hard, but do able
best class you'll ever take! uses fascinating examples!
This was a very interesting class with an exceptional professor. He is perhaps the best I've had at UIC
This guy is strange but keeps you riveted on the material, especially when he gets into the trial videos he shows.Great course!
The first test is difficult but he goes over the material. The other tests are not that bad. He uses great examples in the classroom that makes it easy to follow. Excellent professor.
Never used the textbook, I don't think its necessary to buy it. He posts all lecture power points on blackboard and tells you almost all of the questions that would be on the test. He's weird, but I wouldn't mind taking his class again.
He is a very knowledgeable professor, an has no problem lecturing for the full 50 minutes. He has an obsession with the Kennedy Smith trial and Roy Black, which he somehow tied into every lecture it seems like. A bit on the strange side, but I enjoyed the class.
Eloquent lecturer, very handsome and well dressed. I found him very sexy too. I don't know how the female students felt.
He is very knowledgeable and has no problem talking about for the entire lecture. He talks about the same cases all semester and shows videos of them all the time. the test are pretty easy. just review the slides.
He is a very funny teacher, if you go to class he gives you all the test questions in his slides. The first test was the hardest since its based more on theories but if you study and don't read the book it's an easy B
coca cola and cigarettes its good for the digestion. Interesting character
Deserves funniest professor of the year award. Very easy course, only 3 exams.
Do you need the easiest A at UIC? Take CLJ 200 with Matoesian. Three scantron exams, no homework, no papers. He gives you the test questions word for word in class - or so I'm told, I never went. Day before the exams his TAs give out the test questions. I spent more time reading the sports page today than I've worked on this class all semester.
Easy Easy class, He literally gives answers to all of his exams in class. he holds a review session before every exam to tell you exactly what is going to be on there and if that is not enough his powerpoints notate which bullet points will be test questions.
He gives you the answer/u dnt learn anything. robots who repeat things back only repeat. he goes off on tangents all the time, and tries to be funny.tries. im having a hard time bc his slides r bullet points without any topic relating to them, and he suggested we not buy the book. sometimes i dnt even know what hes talkin bout bc class schedule
he does give you some of the test questions, however if you don't come to class, you probably won't pass exams. he is actually really knowledgeable about topic but he goes off on tangents so its hard to stay focused on what he is actually saying. He is ok.
If you value your GPA do not take. Grade depends on 3 tests alone, no other points so if you do poorly on them you will ruin your GPA. For some reason refuses to give EC or curve the grades. Posts PP and "gives test questions" but at times doesnt use all the ? and puts some that we didnt even talk about. attendance mandatory, online readings.
Has a strict 100 pt based class with three exams and zero room for error. He won't speak to you about grades. He is comical in class, but when trying to speak with him about the 2nd exam that more than half the class did poorly on (avg. was a 20/30), he refused to even look at me when I asked for his opinion and what went wrong. Rude in person.
if you're into serious scholarship and want to learn something take this class. If you your looking for an easy grade take something else. Excellent and impressive lecturer.
Everyone who wrote that they did poorly on any of the exams CLEARLY didn't come to class. He gives you exactly what you need to know. Come to class for the 50 minutes and you'll do just fine. Only 3 exams so you have to do well on all of them. There's no reason anyone couldn't get an A.
funniest professor. Very easy course, only 3 exams. BUT YOU NEED TO COME TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES SINCE HE GIVES YOU THE TEST ANSWERS.
He gets off topic a lot! He would not really explain the information well. It's just 3 test. So it is very crucial not to mess up on a test, that's what the whole grade goes off by. The T.A's were no help at all. Have to go to class, to obtain the answers for the test. I would not take him for another class.
he is a pretty simple guy who isn't hard to understand. He explains things in a way that connects with or generation and has lots of great stories that will give a clearer meaning of the subject matter. He is a pretty knowledgeable professor who clearly loves what he does and im actually taking his class again for CLJ 200
Easiest class ever. So chill. If you dont pass, then you need to reevaluate your life
Best professor at UIC. Makes you laugh and knows how to communicate effectively
He writes books, so he knows what he's talking about. Great lecturer and dresses cool.
I love his lectures and love him! Very good looking man.
Very good class, would take again. Easy A if you show up to lectures!
easy class. got over an 100 in this class because of the extra credit in discussion. just go to discussion and study the power points and you'll get an A.
Second time to take this professor and his extensive knowledge in the field is nothing less than inspirational. His lectures are entertaining and you take a lot out of them. He communicates his ideas well, to say the least.
Best professor I've ever had
What can I say, Greg is Greg. Had him for 101 and is the same way. Funny, really knows his stuff, and throws in the occasional Kim K reference. Show up and you should pass without a doubt.
Great professor and interesting too!
4 easy tests, great reviews and gives bonus pts. you won't get bonus pts in the regular semester class. Better to take in Summer.
3 tests are the only grades for the class. Hint: go to lecture you will get all the answers from the test. Brings the exam to class everyday and reads a couple questions from it. If you do not like going to lecture he puts his PP online with *'s next to test questions. I barley went to class and got a B from studying the PP's.
very scholarly course and the professor was very in tune with the subject matter. Brought abstract concepts down to earth.
LOVE HIM. He's hilarious and sweet. All those who gave bad reviews didn't go to class. He stars some of the questions on the powerpoints (which he does post online) but I didn't find that to be enough. Go to lecture, and either record it or listen!! He doesn't give extra credit because you shouldn't need it.
This guy is high octane! Great lecturer. Best I've had at UIC.
Makes you read a lot but very serious scholarship. I learned a lot I never expected to learn.
He's not politically correct (too much) and gives you all sides of the issue.
Funny guy, gets distracted sometimes and repeats stories, but I still liked the class. Very entertaining, post lectures online and basically tells you what is on the test. Test are super easy if you go to class and listen. Take notes because that is the test answer right there.
I really liked having Matoesian! He was a really funny guy, repeated a lot of his jokes, but overall an easy class and you won't regret it! He even made the class easy as well. 3 of the tests were only 15 questions but the midterm was 40 questions. discussions are also taken as a grade bc there were also small hw assignments!
Good professor. I only showed up to class for the exams and received a B. Everything is on the PowerPoints. We also had discussion with this class, which helped with the exams. If anything the discussions were hard compared to the class. He does go over the exam in class so if you show up you will get most of the info that you need.
He's a great lecturer who doesn't water it down. You do need to come to class for test questions. Hot to look at!
All you have to do is come to class and you should receive an A. He gives great reviews and covers some pretty fascinating stuff dealing with crime, especially comparing Chicago with NYC. I liked it!!!
Matoesian is the craziest you know what at UIC! His lectures go over stuff that you would never imagine in a million years. It's almost like learning a new language or coming across a strange culture someplace. Heavy, Heavy, Heavy (he's stuck in the 60s by his own admission).
Took him last Summer. He gives around 20% bonus credit so it's almost impossible not to do well. Better come to class though. Great lecturer. Very nice person.
Come to class and you should do fine. I have him now and he gives you all the questions and answers for the tests. Great to listen to and watch trial videos from his books on rape trials.
He's great but I wish I had taken him in the Summer. I heard he gives 20 or 30 bonus pts out of 100 total and it's impossible not to do well. He doesn't give extra credit during the regular semesters because classes are too big.
He is a nice man, but doesn't engage much with the students. Refuses to give extra credit or homework to not only get a better grade, but to actually learn the material. You can clearly tell him and the TA's are there for the paycheck. Book is not needed, 3 tests. I do not recommend.
you take a course from him and you get a professional scholar who does original research not a TA who teaches from a book
If you go to lectures, you will do just fine in the exams. Only 3 throughout the entire semester. Write down the Test Questions in his power points and review those for the exams. His lectures are more conversation like. He reads off test questions in the exams in his lectures (hint). Great professor to pick up in any CLJ level.
Had him this Summer and he gives around 20 or so bonus pts. Easy A if you come to class. Great scholar!
need to come to class cause he gives test questions and answersen
His lectures are interesting and kept me wanting more. Your entire grade is based off of 3 tests and going to discussion with your TA. He lectures off of tests and often gives test questions at the end of class so do not miss class. He doesn't give extra credit in regular semesters but you won't need it if you go to class. Easy A!
Great Lecturer. Eloquent Speaker. Dresses Cool.
He constantly talks about his ex wives, and never shuts up about his personal life. He gives out test questions during class, so if you don't pass you're just being lazy & not showing up for class. Also, he does not care about you or helping you out. All tests, no extra credit, no special circumstances, it is what it is point blank period.
When he talks about sexual assault legislation it's spectacular. He doesn't lecture from notes. He just knows everything. I guess because that his area of expertise. Very knowledgeable.
All I can say is he is an impressive, charismatic lecturer with a solid grasp of the material. I really enjoyed this class!
Matoesian is an expert in his field, great guy, and pretty funny. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives out a lot of test questions if you show up. Discussion sections are only 10 points, and the rest are 3 exams. Show up to lecture, take notes, and you'll ace the class. It's up to you, no curves or extra credit. Take him, you won't regret it!
He is an amazing professor who only has three exams and the discussion is mandatory. Class is out of 100 points so make sure to try on the exams because if you screw one up, it screws you for the class. But they're pretty easy, even if you don't go to lecture as long as you go to discussion you will understand the material.
This class was pretty easy, I don't think I opened the book once. There are three tests so as long as you do well on those (they're all pretty easy) and you attend your discussion section, you should be golden!
He was a good professor. Just really unorganized on blackboard and on his powerpoints. The syllabus was no help at all because we were assigned readings for week 1-4 and we didn't even know what to read in order to keep up with lecture. He doesn't give extra credit and you need to go to lecture in order to understand the information on the powerpoi
Show up to class or you won't pass. Tests are mainly on the lectures.
Great professor with amazing sense of humor! Attend lectures if you want an easy A.
The class itself is easy but the fact that it's only 100 points makes it hard to mess up. You're only graded on 3 exams and 10 discussion pts so if you don't get A's on all 3 exams you most likely won't get an A in the class. Material is pretty easy though. Doesn't take attendance. I didn't show up to class because he's so boring and hard to follow
Most scholarly course I've every encountered.
Super nice guy. All you have to do is show up to lecture and you will get an A. 3 exams and he gives all the answers to the exams in class, just remember what he reads off the exam. Really respected guy and clearly knows what he is talking about
Great professor. I wish I had taken the class in the Summer. I heard he gives 20 or 25 bonus points! None in the Sp or Fall.
Matoesian is very funny and sweet. You have to show up for lecture and discussion in order to pass.
Attendance is not mandatory, but test answers given in class. This class is made up of only 3 exams, no papers, no extra credit, nothing. Very easy if you attend class. Textbook not needed
I don't know where to begin. But, I definitely he is one of the best professors I've had at UIC. Professor literally gives us answers in class, and he is super funny. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Amazing professor! It was an easy class. I strongly recommend this class. Lectures were always fun and interesting.
Honestly, you only need to show up the day before the exam and you will get an A in the class. Super easy and it will take hard work and dedication to fail any of his classes.
The lectures consisted of him just lecturing with attendance not being mandatory. He gives exam questions and answers during his lectures so thats an incentive to show up to class. The textbook was not needed! I didn't open it up even once. Discussion required attendance and had 3 easy completion assignments that were really just study guides.
In all my life, never have I learned more from an educator than I did from Professor Matoesian. He is an extraordinary man, an engaged mentor, a towering intellect, and a dear, dear friend.
You can tell when he talks he is passionate about the topic, which makes you want to actually pay attention. Had him for online lectures due to covid but I have actually learned without having to study a ton. You have a "required" text book, I got A's w/out it. Overall highly recommend this class if you want to get an A while actually learning.
Professor Matoesian is very passionate about law & society and teaching. We only had 3 exams and no final. There is a book required but I passed without the book. Discussion class is very easy. We only had to do weekly discussion board posts, 3 assignments (study guides & current events), and a final reflection essay on the class.
Pros: -give the answers to the tests Cons: -lecture slides are cluttered, messy, and not intended for student-note-taking
Tends to be all over the place in his lecture videos. Videos are a bit unorganized but the TAs were very helpful in summarizing what he was saying. Only gives 3 exams and TAs give a few assignments. A textbook is required but didn't use it much.
I would not take this Professor again. This is the perfect example of an overpaid professor that is tenured and has no concern for students. His policies are rigid and do not address any of the issues that can arise when a class is taught completely online. I found his personality to be abrasive and uncompromising. Practice what you preach!
Best Professor at UIC
Nicest professor everr
Attend lectures and you're solid. He will read the test word for word and give you the answers during lectures, so lectures are a must! Attendance is not mandatory, but you'll work a lot harder than you need to to pass if you don't attend. Have I mentioned that you should attend lectures yet?
This professor is the WORST professor at UIC. He never answered one of my emails; when I went to his office hours, he refused to see me because he thought I was not attending lectures. Mind you; I have missed ONE lecture this entire semester. He is overpaid and needs to be fired. Lots of rumors on campus about how horrible he treats his students.
Complete the study guides and attend lectures and it an easy class with no outside work.
If you want serious scholarship this is the course at UIC. If you want a goof off course this isn't for you.
One thing you'll notice about Matoesian. He doesn't lecture from notes. He stands right in front on the class and engages you right from the start. He's impressive to say the least!
I didn't know who the professor was before I took the course. But then I did a google on him and found he isn't your run of the mill professor. He's the top scholar in his field. Quite an honor to study under him. You would also think someone of that stature would be arrogant etc. But he's the sweetest man and always ready to talk.
I don't know why some people dislike Greg. Matoesian is very funny and engaging during lectures and makes CLJ a actually fun class. Some people might not like the goofiness or his lectures, but personally, It made it more engaging and tests were also easy.
If you don't go to lectures, the chances you pass are minimized greatly. He reads off the test and marks in the slides which topics will be on the test. He goes off topic often but honestly it's funny and refreshing. The grade is comprised of three tests and discussion attendance. Long readings are assigned but I didn't find them necessary.
You only have three assignments which are exams, if you don't go to lecture, you wont pass, as he reads the exam questions in lecture. Lecture is not mandatory. He seems sweet but he is also a bit tough on his students, but as I said go to lecture, take notes, and you'll be fine.
Very sloppy in his lectures, couldn't keep up with what he was saying because he kept changing the subject. Also, all his power points are very scatter and not organized. It was very hard to study and grasp concepts.
This is an instructor who doesn't insult your intelligence, like most professors. He gives you the pros and cons of each topic and lets you decide. How refreshing! Of course, the dumbells don't like that.
He is such a bad professor!! Does not care about his students at all!! Does not answer his email, you should go to your TA instead. The class itself is very easy. there are tests in his class and he reads the answers off in lecture so make sure you go to get the questions. I tape the lecture on my phone and was able to get the entire question.
I really liked Professor Matoesian's teaching style. His lectures were incredibly helpful in preparing for exams, which the final grade mostly consists of. Exam scores made up 90% of the grade and 10% of the grade consists of your discussion section grade. The professor was charismatic and knowledgeable.
I had a great TA, so this class was awesome. 3 tests and a few assignments from my TA. Greg plays videos a lot, but they r really interesting.
I love Matoesian! He makes all his class very entertaining and very informative! He grades really well and provides good feedback on things you need to improve without being condescending, and not very strict on grading essays
GO TO LECTURE !!!! Matoesian gives answers to all the exam questions (make sure you're paying attention) ! He's so funny and I really enjoyed his lectures even though they weren't mandatory. Definitely would take his class again! If your TA is Torey Cohen-B RUN !
