Dr.Smith is a very good teacher..does not mind helping students..he tries to be funny and to make the class fun. Would recommend this teacher out of all the other English professors.

this class inspired me, and i hope to take Dr. Smith sometime in the future.
Dr. Smith is my most out going and fun to be with professor yet. He gives the most and best handouts out of all my professors that I have had or heard of on campus. He is always willing to help or at least get help for students that are trying their best.
Dr. Smith is the best English proffesor on campus. He is fun during his lectures and his tests are clear and cover only what he says they do. I will take him for all my English classes while at san jac.

I took him online. He was a good teacher. However, he grades hard on the papers you have to turn in. Watch out for machinal errors he's big on those.
He grades your papers hard for mechanical errors, Tough in that aspect, kind of monotone but not really hard, I made a "B"
I took for summer class, and we read way to much. Nice guy loves English but overwhelming amount of reading. 5 week class and had homework every single night. Hard quizzes. I am burnt out on reading!!!
he is a English freak. He breaths English in and out. He is a avid fan of Stephen King. I found him to be a passionate person about English and literature.
Good teacher. Very into English and Literature. There is a lot of reading but a fair grader on tests and essays. I got an A in the class but I did have to read a lot.
I've taken 2 of his courses- American lit (online) and Later Brit lit (in class). He's a great prof., loves literature, and I'd take another of his classes, if I had the option. Hope you have a copy of the MLA; it'll be your best friend by the end of the semester.
Not an easy "A". You have to try very hard to fail or be very stupid. He really likes poety. That part of the class I did not enjoy. It was a good class.
Dr. Smitty is a wonderfully inspiring teacher. He's made me believe I can write. I feel good about myself when I leave his class. Appearance? a hotty but could use a makeover for this century. Do what you can to make him laugh you'll see a different. Ask him to do a Ben Stein impersonation: Bueller?
Dr. Smith is a fun teacher. At first he comes off tough, but when he knows his class, he really is a fun teacher. There is a lot of reading but doesnt every comp.2 class do the same? The reading is sometimes long, but overall easy and his quizzes arent bad either.
He is somewhat scattered brained but definitely loves what he does and is super understanding and helpful. He is definitely willing to work with you if you ask for it. Comma splices drives him nuts but makes you love what you are writing about. I definitely would take him again.
Dr.Smith makes you write something everyday! You always have homework, and you better do it because you will have a quiz on it the next day. He's BIG on mechanical errors. Make sure you know what a comma splice and sentence fragment are before entering his class.Bring tennis shoes because you cross the whole campus to go to the writing center everyd
very scatter brained. likes talking about his "gangster friend". looks like a nerd, and comes off as very anal, but is really a nice guy. though he has a MAJOR thing against comma splices. stupid commas and likes to take off for minor details in papers. he is an overall good guy. lots of papers, reading and corny jokes. tests are fairly simple.
Lots of writing, but he is a fair teacher.
We went to the writing center everyday to do assignments. I took the summer session and we wrote a lot. The papers were due pretty quickly. He gave a lot of assignments, but he is a fair teacher.

The most scatterbrained professor I have ever had. I've never recieved lower than a B on an essay in my history at universities, although I hardly made above a C- on all of his essays. Half of the class dropped and the other half did poorly. Although he seems to be a nice guy, he really needs to work on consistancy and his lectures overall.
This teacher is inconsistant in his grading style. He will take off sometimes and sometimes he will not. He will count something 10 pts sometimes but 5 pts at other times. You shouldn't tell him that he is inconsistant because it will effect your grade on your next paper. His rating is high because his honors students repeatedly comment and raise it
easy but changes the subject often. bad grading style but other than that, he's good.
Only take him if you are going to be an English major. He'll screw you up if you're just there to get your English credit. He is VERY picky, and throws away 10 points on a whim. I was writing paper after paper after...and it was a lot of wrk while working full-time and trying to carry a full load at school too.
If u attend his class and listen to lecture, there is no way u can fail. Dr.Smith is hilarious, he cracks me up. He is a very understanding prof. He makes English interesting too. I recommend him to anyone.
Excellent teacher who takes time and effort for the students to learn. All the bad reviews are just lazy students who can't take a challege. I would hate for you lazy bumbs to take english at a real school. Dr. Smith is preparing his students for the real world and for a better college. Your cool Dr. Smith!!!
Don't be put off by his disorganized appearance or bluntness. If you pay attention and ask questions you'll pass easily. He loves students to ask questions and talk to him after class. He proofread my research paper eight times! If there is one thing he hates, it is a comma splice. You can lose a letter grade for only TWO comma splices.
Dr. Smith is the best teacher out there!!!
Dr. Smith is a wonderful teacher.
Req'd an $80+ txtbk for less than 10 poems which can be found on the internet. Stories we read were not from the txtbk...but even still the txtbk was req'd. His poetry test was horrible (we read poems that weren't on the test)! My A dropped to a B after the bad poetry test. He's a very nice man but that doesn't make up for his disorganiztion.
He is a good teacher i would recommend him if you r actually willing to work hard averae grade is a B
Great teacher, but he fully expects you to be able to write well. If you waste his time with basic Comp 1/2 questions, he will send you to the writing center for help. Tests are easy, and he picked some REALLY fun books (Huck Finn, Salem's Lot, etc). I was really glad he didn't just teach the same boring stuff from Comp 1/2.
I took smith for comp II and American Lit. I enjoyed going to his classes. He does skip around alot during his lecture. The only complaint I would make is that I had to buy an $80 textbook that we only read maybe 10 to 15 poems from. The poems could easily have been found on the web.
boring....i hope one day he can have a social life outside of school. everyone in my class basically busted our butts for a c average. which is not even worth it.
Dr.Smith is boring, unorganized and has something against commas! He is a waste of salary. He cannot teach! He gives unrealistic due dates for his papers and takes 3-months to grade them. Don't waste your money/time in this class! You will be better off choosing a "STAFF" teacher instead.
He gave himself the nickname "absent minded professor" and he fully lived up to that. If you need to know ahead of time what you will be doing the next class, he is not your teacher. He just goes with whatever he feels like. He is a strange man. If you write well and ask for his help he really likes you.
He is too scatter-brained. He will go off on long boring tangents that have nothing to do with the lecture. I had a hard time understanding what the assignments were over. The only way you can pass his class is if you are already a good writer.
His class is easy, but he his a little bit monotoned. He is fair and understanding. Sometimes he gets sidetrack and starts to talk about random things. Read the necessary material and you will get a good grade on the quizes. He is boring somedays and interesting other days.
Dr. Smith was relatively easy. He has a lot of writing assignments, most of which are in class. I took his class in during the summer, so that may be why we hardly used the books. We used the Longman Writer quite a bit, but we barely used the Norton Reader. Just do the assignments and you'll do fine.
I was nervous about this class because I don't like writing, but Dr. Smith was a wonderful teacher. I made an A on my research that I dreaded doing. Wonderful teacher. Very helpful and easy to understand!!! I strongly recommend him.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher he thinks he's funny and wanders off subject during all of his lectures. Lots of writing assignments but for the most part it is an easy class..most boring class I have EVER taken, by far.
He likes to get off topic during his lectures, and sometimes he can be a little boring. His class is not hard if you read the assigned reading. We had quite a few in class writing assignments and 3 or 4 essays to write. Not a hard class at all.
Absolutely terrible. By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He teaches one thing and tests you over another. He counts off for every single "comma" in the wrong place. He is the hardest grader I have ever had and if you ask him a question he tells to consult writing manuals in the learning center. Worst teacher ever!
goes off subject a lot and tries to make life changing speeches to students. Grades very critically on punctuation etc which works to an extent. he needs to focus more on content sometimes. not a bad guy at all, even though he's disorganized he'll try to help you in some way. i give him a c+, just like the grade he gave me on every paper i wrote lo
Dr. Smith is a wonderful professor. He can be very entertaining if you keep an open mind. He really cares about his students because he is always trying to make his class more appealing. He is not an unreasonable grader, and is easy to talk to. Overall, his teaching methods are very effective, so I definitely recommend taking Dr. Smith for English.
Overall, he is a good teacher. He sometimes gets off topic, but still manages to teach the subject successfully. He is always willing to help. I would recommend taking this professor.
There are so many things I can't begin to describe Prof Smith...I can absolutely say that he's a professor you can never forget! He is extremely helpful if you ask. I think he makes the class fun; well, it kept me awake. The random topics he talks about is amusing. He is a great professor even if he gets off topic and rushes at the end. :)
Good professor, although a little aloof sometimes. Always willing to help you outside of class.
He is so funny!! OMG...if you had an ounce of humor, you would love attending his class. He is a very understandable English teacher; most of what he looks for is correct comma and sentence usage and good paragraph development. The only downside would be occasional quizzes. He also loves people from foreign backgrounds; culture interests him alot.
This is the WORST professor I have ever had. I had to drop his class because he was so rude. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Should you need a teacher who sticks to the point, don't take him. If you can understand, listen, read, write, and follow instructions, you will do fine. He grades his papers extremely well and puts in comments on how it could be better-follow them!! Don't be lazy but expect to do a lot of work in class. He will help you IF YOU ASK!
Dr. Smith gets off subject ALOT and gossips about his students. I would not recomend taking him unless you have time to waste(he graded half the papers i turned in, and he would assign the class to read out of the book, for a reading quiz grade, and never give us a quiz or have a class disscusion)
he is very chatty and will make you laugh. he grades easy and only cares about commas, if you ask for help you will get it.great teacher
Dr. Smith, possibly from years of little to no class participation, lectures as if he's in a vacuum. There is little to no time given to class discussion, and he tends to ramble. He's a very nice professor and went out of his way to help me get materials for the final since I missed the class prior; however, his teaching style left me a bit cold.
awesome professor. teaches with docter weller. lots of laughs during all english days.
this professor is alot of fun on all english days. he teaches with dr. Weller for innerdiciplinary hist/english. he's really helpfull and wants to help you get an A+.
Dr. Smith's classes are pretty neat. I took the interdisciplinary History/English w/ Dr. Weller & his Creative Writing class. I must say both classes left me wanting more. Dr. Smith is a really great teacher. He helped me rekindle my love of writing. He is a grading stickler, but fair. Love you Dr. Smith!!!
He's a bit scattered brain for me. We would be discussing one topic and then it would remind him of something else and the next thing you knew we were no longer discussing our lesson. He enjoys teaching and is interested in what his students think. He is ready to help and guide you along. Watch those commas!
He is one of my favorite teachers, he is one of those that are kind of wierd, but you'll love them. He shows a lot of ppt and videos. He gives a nice atmosphere, if you want to get a easy A, take him!!
He is the best professor I've ever had. He makes class very fun and interesting, plus he's a very cool guy.
Adorably scatter-brained, but it gets annoying sometimes. An easy A, particularly if throw in a "shocking twist" to some of your stories. Lots of videos, lots of PPs - he's very straight forward about his pet peeves, and beyond that it's almost like he doesn't much care what you write. Nice guy, fun class, wouldn't take it again.
Tried to give me a C. Is very liberal; don't express your opinion. Is very weird. Would not take again. Schedule 5 meetings. He missed all 5. Finally, I went to the dean, and then he was willing to see me. grade changed magically. Was quite a non-sensical scatter brained jerk.
I love this guy, he's completely mental but it works for his bizarre little style of teaching. Handouts are, belive it or not, important. Just highlight what he sais then use it while you write your paper. Try to enjoy his humor.
He may get off subject every once in a while but is still a great teacher. He gets his point across. You will write lots of two page double spaced papers in his class. The way he grades is very descriptive and helpful. Any questions you have he will answer to the best of his ability. He is very entertaining but hates comma splices!
Well, what can I say? DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! Yes, it is true that he is a hater for the "comma splices," and this is an example: I called the witch doctor, he told me what to do. This needs to be changed to: I called the witch doctor and he told me what to do. Dr. Smith gives way to much work with too little time. Take Mrs. Thornburg :)
I took his class during the Summer semester. He gives an lot of homework, including many stories to read nightly, with the probability of a quiz over them the next day. He also gets off topic quite often. Halfway through our class, he began relating everything to Michael Jackson, annoying the class. Teacher not recommended!
Dr.Smith will be offering Honors Interdisciplinary Comp I/History I with Dr. Weller in Fall 2009. The couse is 6 hours and is a team taught course. It will meet on Mon. & Wed. from 9:00-12:00. Look for the listing under the Honors section of the fall San Jac schedule. You only have to write one research paper which counts for both courses.
Took Dr.Smith for Comp I during the summer. Good teacher, likes to talk, and funny. I highly recommend taking him! Do not take him in the summer if you cannot find time to do the work: it is 16 weeks crammed into 5! He does use the textbooks alot!
He is the best teacher for Composition
Take his Honors classes.
I took Dr.Smith for Comp I during the summer. Good teacher, funny and likes to talk alot. I highly recommend taking him! Uses text book!!!
One of a kind teacher, but very helpful. Loves Michael Jackson and asian honor students. Class is not to hard if you come to class and pay attention. Says he hates comma splices, but secretly hates run-ons even more. You can catch Dr. Smith on the weekend in Victoria Secrets, recruiting people for his honors class. Over its a good class. TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Smith's Lit and Film class was lots of fun. I enjoyed the required reading and the films associated with the films. I'd take another class with Dr. Smith again.
Smith does indeed walk around the mall for exercise and brag about his students. He is decent in grading for both grammar and content not terrible on either. He does use all class time and makes you walk to writing center a lot. He is helpful but forgetful. Does have favorites but doesn't have scapegoats. He wants his students to succeed.
Terrible teacher....Has favorites in his class and if you sit in the back row you will most likely fail or have a C. Have two or more comma splices in your paper and dont expect anything higher than a D. Wouldnt recommend this class because you will FAIL.
MR SMITH IS HILARIOUS! he may get carried away, but he's a funny teacher who has tons of interesting stories to share. he's computer challenged tho. he wants his students to succeed, and he is a decent grader. he focuses majorly on grammar and expects highly of his students. he's pretty coool!
Dr. Smith was indeed a cool/spontaneous professor. Grades fairly and usually likes to talk about a lot of news, etc. within his lectures. It was a decent class overall. Take it or break it.
He is a very funny teacher who really cares about his students. He really wants them to learn. If you need any help you can always ask him. He will also refer you to the writing center! Great teacher, but you must be serious. I got an "A" but it's because I love English. Not an easy "A". Let him know if you're an English major >.< !
GREAT TEACHER. He is very nice and helpful. He cares about his students a lot. I have learned so much from him. I took him for both comp 1 and 2 and my writing has improves a lot. I really really recommend that you take him for both comp 1 and 2. You will learn so much. Don't even think twice about taking him. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Good.
Very good.
if you're bad with comma splices, then you're doomed lol.. but he really is helpful and if you have problems inyour essays, he'll point them out and help you out with them. i've taken him before and he's rlly nice, kinda funny n helpful. i look forward to attending his class every week. it's rlly good, i'd recommend taking him
Dr. Smith is a great teacher! He is very helpful and you can tell he loves to teach. He is quite the stickler for correct punctuation and proper MLA format. However, if you proof read your papers, you will do fine. I look forward to taking Dr. Smith next semester!
Attended the Honors Interdisciplinary class. History 1301 professor teaches most of the class. Grade is divided over more papers and a diction test than regular class. Helpful. Get your papers checked at the writing center before you submit, and you will be fine.
Hilarious guy!
the best
A Wonderful, Wonderful professor. If you listen to him you will learn a lot about writing.
Dr. Smith's class is a riot. Just about everything he says is hilarious. I had so much fun, but learned a lot at the same time. Definitely must take him, he is the best!
his class is so easy its a blowoff! just do your essays
He was a very random and often explicit teacher. He often said things that were pretty controversial without meaning any harm. Example: "You on the back row! you must like rap music, huh?" to a black girl. He meant no harm by it and it was hilarious. Would take again if possible.
I learned and improved my writing a lot! He's extremely random, and loves Lady Gaga & Shikira. He repeats himself A LOT. Dr. Smith is monotone, so when he tries to tell a joke..it's funny.. He grades his essay on mainly grammar/punctuation. I definitely recommend him, and hope i can get into his comp 2 class!
Really good professor. Teaches well. May get distracted but gets back on subject fairly quickly.
He's a very helpful and really cares about his students, unlike a lot of professors. I took his interdisciplinary honors class and loved it. It is a challenging course but Dr. Smith really guides you in the right direction if you are a diligent, hard working student. I highly recommend his honors english courses. And also sign up for the honors pro
he is an amazing teacher! he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. he really is an amazing teacher, ive already signed up for his comp. 2 class!
Very rarely was on topic, spent most of the time talking about Lady Gaga or creeping in the mall or whatever popped into his head. Spent a few minutes every day listing excuses why assignments weren't graded or why the test scheduled for the day was being pushed back again (repeatedly). Attending class a waste of time.
Dr. Smith is the best. So far I've taken English Comp 2 (Honors), Literature and Film and Creative Writing with him, although I love all the classes he teaches, Creative Writing is the best. I've learned s0 much about writing from taking this class. I recommend taking this class if you love to write and one day want to see your work in print.
HILARIOUS!!! he talks a lot off subject but he tries really hard to connect with his students. he wants you to do the best that you can do and really wants you to succeed. he will want you to write, simply to get published. overall a fun class to go to and i would definitely recommend him.
This teacher is awesome! Very nice and funny. He tries his best to relate to students. He wants his students to be very succesful. His assignments are easy if you follow his insturctions. I plan to take him for Comp2.
I took the Honors class, loved it because of less papers and the same assignment could count for both. Great teacher, he does talk in monotone but PAY attention, it upsets him when you don't. he taught me ALOT about punctuating, and MLA. He really was not hard as long as you had good punctuation, grammar, MLA format, and creative in your writing.
Dr. Smith gave me the foundation to get my BA from UHCL. He encouraged me to stay in school abd took the time to improve my writing and reading skills.
I took Prof. Smith for a Creative Writing course and really enjoyed it. Class period was pretty relaxed and yes, he did go off on tangents sometimes, but because it was an elective it wasn't a big deal. Over all, he really wants to see his students improve and does a lot to help them succeed. I would definitely recommended him.
He has a monotone voice, but it's not that difficult to listen to him. He's really funny, and he changes the subject like every 5 min. He talks about random stuff, but I kinda like it because it's hilarious. His grading criteria isn't difficult. I like him. I wish I could've taken him for english 1301.
Funny Guy... If you enjoy literature, you will really like his Compostition 2 course. However, he does grade tough. I would really concentratre on making your paper pefect in grammatical form. He cares more about grammar than content. You should enjoy the class, because he is quite hilarious..givesExtensionsIfTheWholeClassIsStrugglingWithSomething
Great teacher. He really tries to help you. Hilarious. Tough grader. Really into grammar. All around cool guy.
I would NOT recommend him. Yes, he is smart. He's an expert linguist. He will not help you become one. He'll red mark all over your paper and not really go over how to fix any problems...he is VERY disorganized, losing my papers multiple times. He is absent-minded and too worried about making the class laugh or earning money off your papers?
Dr. Smith's interdisciplinary honors class is a great way to take English whether your an English major or not (I'm not). He covers all the basic grammer quickly, and then moves on to more interesting topics of style and organization. You do have to do some work, but it is an honors course after all. It is well worth taking.
Best teacher ever
BEST.ENGLISH PROFESSOR.EVER. He is very helpful and is always willing to talk to you about anything. He is upfront about what he expects and will very willingly help you to achieve your goals. He loves to see his students succeed. DO NOT expect an easy A atoll. You need to earn your own grade, otherwise you have no business on a college campus.
He will never stick to the schedule. He will tell the class "Read the book because i am going to give the class a quiz" and he will never hand us the quiz. He is very strict about punctuation. He only ask the opinion of the people he likes. Can be inappropriate at times. His class can easily be taken online. Do not waste your gas!
He is an excellent professor...I recommend him, especially if you are an english major
He's a good professor, but he does go off on tangents a lot. He's funny, kind of inappropriate at times, but all in all, he's an awesome professor.
He's a funny guy. He goes off on tangents quite a bit, but if you remind him, and ask questions, the class can be very fun, and educational. He grades hard, but is willing to help out students succeed, so don't be afraid to ask.
I adore this man. He is the perfect combination knowledge and funny and very dry sense of humor. If you genuinely try to do the work he will bend over backwards to help you. He cares about his students welfare. I love his tangents. They keep me interested. I don't like to be bored... you won't be!
He is a funny guy at times. Hard grader, papers are filled with red corrections but won't bother to ask if we have any questions on why he counted off. Very very unorganized! Loses papers and quizzes. Only suggestion he ever has is to go to the writing center. Points out his favorite students and makes sure everyone knows it. Always praising them.
A great professor who has the tendency of going off on tangents. Hard grader, but his comments on your essays can help you if you try to make your work better. Is willing to help via office visits and emails. A nice guy who wants all his students to do their best. Lots of movies, but you should only take his class if you are a hard worker.
Very helpful and has a lot of passion for English. He is willing to help you in English and in life. he sometimes give you resources to help you write your research paper if you ask. he shows videos and gives handouts that will improve your writing. I'm taking him again for ENG 1302.
Great guy who is passionate about english. I really enjoyed his Comp 1 class. I learned alot and with hardwork achieved an A. He provides all kinds of resources for his students.
Dr. Smith does a lot of group work. He lectures and shows power points. He gives lots of feedback on papers and is willing to meet with students one-on-one. He'll answer any questions and wants the best for his students. He's disorganized at times. That can sometimes be pretty hilarious. You should definitely take the interdisciplinary class.
I think Professor Smith is very intelligent. He knows his stuff. He uses a lot of personal stories to keep the class interesting. He hands out many different handouts to help with grammar. The handouts are nice to refer back to when writing papers. I appreciated his grading standards. He tries to help his students succeed. Just talk/meet with him.
Dr. Smith is such a good teacher. He really cares about his students and their development. He is so funny and keeps your attention with lots of anecdotal stories, videos, handouts, etc. He "woke me up" to the fact that I love English. He is marvelous!
Worst teacher I've ever seen by far, do not take him, he repeats his same old stories over and over. He don't help you if you need him and he is very hard grader, more than half of the class fails his class.
If you want an easy A do not take Dr. Smith. He is an off the wall professor. He wants his students to LEARN! Take notes keep up with your assignments and BUY THE BOOK! He grades hard, but its only to improve your writing. He does not want to fail you but he will if you do not follow direction, specially on your research paper. He hates COMMA SPLICES!
Do not take Dr. Smith as an instructor under any circumstances. He will leave you confused and stressed for the duration of the course. He expects everyone to be an AP English level student with no regard to those that are struggling. I recommend taking the class online where you could have an easier time with less confusion.
Listen to what he says about what he wants you to learn and you will do alright. I barely tried and got a B both times I took him. He is a little scatterbrained but I managed a B in two different 5week summer classes. Can't be that terrible.
does love to talk and will sometimes get off topic but his intentions are good! Be prepared to watch a lot! of old grammar videos. He gives assignments that he sometimes doesn't remember are due and will give essays that be pushed back sometimes. He has a heart. wants you to pass and will help you to pass. I recommend him. he helped me alot
He's a great teacher who wants students to excel. He'll gladly give help if you ask him (especially on the research paper). If you bring a rough draft to class, he will look over it(which can greatly improve your grade). The summer sessions are fast-paced; I suggest taking these courses in a normal fall/spring semester if you struggle with writing.
Dr. Smith is a great writing teacher. He's very helpful when you need the help, and he always makes time for his students. He also wants all his students to succeed and gives us the opportunities to do so. Before I took this class, writing two pages essays were difficult. After taking his class; writing upwards of 5 pages became a breeze.
Prof. Smith is great in assisting students with anything they may need. His essays are simple to complete and there is no class/homework except some reading. I recommend you take this class instead of registering for it online because of the great help and direction that he can provide in person. Great class. Great Professor. Sincerely recommend.
He is one of the best professors. He explains what he wants clearly. He opens doors to his students to encourage them to think outside the box. He challenges our critical thinking. He gives chances to his students to improve their grades.
He is not an easy instructor. Here are a few things I recommend: 1) NEVER turn in a first draft. Try to get some automated revisions, and actual people to revise your paper. 2) Reference the Longman Writer for mechanical stuff. 3) Pay attention. 4) Ask him for help if you needed it. He really does want the best for his students.
This professor is a little disorganized but he makes due dates clear. If you don't know when something is due, its probably your fault. Other than that, he knows his material and is very flexible with students and assignments. If the class is boring, it's not because of him, it's because students don't participate in discussions.
Dr. Smith is one of the best English professors I had so far. I learned a lot from his class, and he is always willing to help his students succeed and improve their grades. I highly recommend you to take his class!
Dr. Smith is one of the best English professors I had so far. I learned a lot from his class, and he is always willing to help his students succeed and improve their writings. I highly recommend you to take his class!
Very kind and easy going; great sense of humor; keeps the class interested in the stories and poems. DO NOT overuse commas... HATES comma-splices. If you listen and take his advice you will get an A easy!!!!!
He was one of the best professor s I ever had. He loves Dual Credit Students and is always willing to help students. I strongly suggest using smart thinking because he gives 10 points extra credit. Great guy!
I had Dr. Smith for Composition 1 in my first semester in college. In the beginning I was nervous because I heard he was hard, but after having him he's really funny. He's really helpful if you take the time to ask him on things you need help on. He's forgetful so expect him to repeat himself a lot.
If you have a chace to take someone else DO IT! Highly advise anyone to think twice before you waste your time ane money here. doesnt matter how many times i went to the writing center. Also he is very forgetful and will lose yout paper then count off on your paper when your turn it back in!
I REALLY enjoyed taking from Dr. Smith. He is a huge lecturer and tells a ton of stories that makes some students fall asleep, but not me! I loved his sense of humor, it really helped make lectures stick better when I had something funny to remember it by. He was very willing to help but doesn't have a lot of time so you have to catch him quickly.
Dr. Smith is a lot of fun. He has a quirky sense of humor that will entertain you if you are paying attention. Read the handouts, and keep up with assignments. He will mention the things that drive him crazy, so make notations. If you read the reccommended reading material you will benefit, but it isn't necessary to do well in the class. I enjoyed the semester in his class and I reccomend him as an instructor.
He is a really easy teacher who is oftenly off topic, also an extremely hard grader. I had a 7 page paper and I had many people help me advise my paper, but when I got the grade and paper back I failed, but there was nothing written on my paper only very few minor errors on the work cited.
This professor was the worst! Took him for Eng 1301, shows lots of unrelated videos (book reviews from his fav artist), if you don't sit in the front row he'll hate you, and get your papers checked several times over by others. He told me "effort doesn't matter, only results" when i made a C on my research paper I had other english majors look at.
Dr. Smith helped me improve my writing. Monotoned, off topic and unorganized, but if you pay attention and follow his advice you'll do well. Helps you find jobs, writes good references, is there for you, answers emails quickly. Watch his videos and read his handouts as they'll help you. Use Smarthinking; I got all As thanks to it.
Mr. Smith makes sure that you're actually learning in his class. If you're not learning, he'll let you know, but he will help. Some say he is a tough grader, but that's only because he wants you to be prepared for real life, in university and beyond. He likes getting his students involved in jobscareers, scholarships, and student organizations.
Mr. Smith's lectures are long and boring. However, I recommend taking him. He expects a lot, but really pushes you to do better. He gives good advice to students who ask for it.
Loved him! He has a very interesting sense of humor. We weren't required to take an exam unless we wanted to make up a past essay grade. He gives a lot of extra credit on his papers if you use smarthinking. He encourages his students to participate in school groups and functions. Taking him again next semester for creative writing!
He is great teacher who does help students be more clear on papers. Very good in helping students in Honors course with research paper wants you to succeed in class for a better second semester. If your up for a challenge take Dr. Smith's class.
Dr. Smith is an excellent professor. If you go to him, he will practically write your papers for you. You just have to be willing to put in a fair amount of work.
Dr. Smith always helps if you ask. All you need to do is put in effort to ask for help and he will try his best to help you. He is also somewhat funny and an easy class to take. i would take hum again if i could but i recommend other students to take him.
Doctor Smith is an amazing professor! He taught both my English 1301 and 1302 courses. I would take him again if I needed another English credit. The classes were generally simple classes to understand. Do not get my wrong, you can not blow off the class. He rarely post on blackboard. Learn to write without comma splices and listen to his feedback.
He does not teach anything and rambles the whole class. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is now a "hard grader" because he feels like it. He goes through papers with a microscope looking for format/grammer errors and adds them up. Up to 30 points off a paper. After using "Turn it in" twice still gave me a F. English is something I'm good at, got a 95 in ENG 1
Lectures are long, he frequently goes off on tangents , but I somehow learned more from him than any other English teacher. Focus on commas, structuring essay's, and quotations. When I took him, we hardly ever took quizzes. Participate, or else he'll keep rambling to fill the silence. He gives out a bunch of handouts. Keep an open mind with him.
HE IS VERY AWESOME AND GIVES YOU BUNCH OF EXTRA CREDIT FOR EACH PAPER YOU TURN IN !! To be honest, every words from him are wisdom and knowledge. I REALLY WANT TO TAKE HIM FOR COMP 2, BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE HONOR COURSE SO I CAN'T :( But, honestly, he is MARVELOUS !!! I have too much respects for Dr. Smith !
Creative writing was super fun with Dr. Smith. The writing material was easy; he let you (within the parameters) write stories that were true to you, not cookie cutter handouts. The overall experience was an enjoyable one and the environment was friendly. Dont worry about any public speaking, if you don't want to, you won't be forced to!
I took comp 1 with Dr. Smith in the fall semester of 2016. He didnt hand out a syllabus, even online there was no syllabus. Kept changing due dates to major assignments. Hes a very nice guy, sometimes funny, but he picks 2 or 3 students and elects them his favorites and then doesnt involve anyone else but those select few during lectures.
I learned a lot of grammar, writing style, and essay tips from this class. This class actually improved my writing. Smith is very monotone, reads everything aloud, but endearingly funny. Very willing to give you feedback on early drafts. Not super tough on grading. Expects you to improve. Very lax discipline in class.
When I first saw Dr. Smith I thought he would be mean and boring. But he was nothing as I expected. He was very funny, and although he went off topic a lot, it was not bad because who would want to sit in a room and talk about a novel all day. I had to do at least 4 essays in one semester which is not bad, but IS VERY PICKY ABOUT GRAMMER
Dr. Smith's Film and Lit course concentrates on literature, but you also get to see some films throughout the course. When I took the course, we went over some great works. Highlights: He had the class watch Ex Machina for a discussion on plot + character.
If you have a dry sense of humor, take him. He gives a lot of extra credit.
I was in film and lit; we covered 3 short novels and 1 play. No tests, all out of class papers. The mini is supposed to be half and half though, with open book open note tests.
He is super easy for English. I only had four papers and it was more like a creative writing assignment. He hands out extra credit contently. If you love dry humor and want an easy grade take him.
As many others have said, he does have a dry sense of humor. Essays were fairly easy, only 5 paragraphs which should be equivalent to 2-3 pages. He does accept late work but there is a penalty. There are extra credits to substitute missing essays or bumping up low grades. His class is more steered towards literatue than film, get ready to read.
I took him for Composition 2 and it was pretty easy. As long as you have good grammar in your papers you should do fine. Other students apparently did not do as well but I got 100's on almost all my papers so I liked the class. Just know how to avoid common grammar mistakes (he goes over them at the beginning of class) and you'll do good.
I took Dr. Smith for Literature and Film in a 3-week mini session this summer. I made A's on everything, but I made sure to read every chapter required in the books we read over the three week class. We did quite a few papers and had roughly two tests a week. He provides the texts, so don't buy the book! If you're reading this, here's a pepper!
Greg was hilarious. And very knowledgeable! His class also DOESNT require any books which is AWESOME! An English class with no book? Yes please. Downside? When we had a lot to go over in class he would start going off on rants about friends, family instead of focusing on the content. That was frustrating when we had a lot to do.
This class was not worth the effort or the stress that most people went through.
A very easy COMP class. Honestly He is very funny and loves his job. He really cares about comma splices that is what messed me up. He is unorganized but good.
Dr. Smith is wonderful, he helped me so much. I had him in the interdisciplinary course, and he really cared about our success as students. When doing my research he dropped everything he was doing to help me. If you do your work and genuinely try he is more willing to help review and edit your papers. I definitely recommend this professor.
his awesome
I took Dr. Smith for comp 1, 2, and he just announced he will teach film & lit in the mini with open book open note tests. Super chill guy with kinda dark humor. Easy grader if you know how he works. Go to the tutoring center to make sure your grammar is on point because he's tough on that
He gave use a lot of time to do our essays.
Amazing professor! Definitely recommend!
Really cool professor! He really cares about his students and is always there for help! We read pretty interesting stories in his class. He's also really funny! Take his class!
I had Dr. Smith for Comp I and II. He is hilarious and genuinely loves teaching. In both semesters he really helped me succeed. I presented my undergraduate research on a national level, and I really credit him for my success. He challenged me to be better and supported me in my education. He is the best English professor at San Jac in my opinion.
Take this professor! He cares for his students success & his essays are really easy!
Dr. Smith is a well-spoken professor who truly cares about improving your writing. He isn't incredibly strict and will work with you and your schedule. If you put in the time, you will get a grade you are happy with. He has also had many students go on to get published and be highly successful. If you care about your writing, choose Dr. Smith.
Good professor overall
English is a tough course to learn let alone teach. Dr. Smith keeps thing fresh by talking about current events. He will teach up to the point before students quit paying attention. There is a ton of chances for extra credit; the tutor center (5 points) and an online website you can submit your essay and have it reviewed. (10 points). G
Took him for Comp 1,2 and Film. Easy grader if you pay attention to grammar. Gives A LOT of extra credit: 5pts for visiting the tutoring center, 10pts for using Smartthinking, extra credit paper to replace one bad grade. I made all A's in all 3 classes. Says he's offering free hard back text books for Honors Comp1 in Fall18 @10am. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Smith is the best professor I've had yet. He is so funny in his lectures and you can tell he truly cares about his students success.
The only thing positive about this class was he gave extra credit. He is socially awkward but he means well. He liked when you participate. Easy if you like writing papers.
he actually likes what he does is monotone aka funny & looks like an old hipster :o not really easy unless you know what a comma splice is and actually have good grammar. oops. you'll probably have to go to the writing center to get extra points. he made us read cool stuff, gives good feedback & wants 2 know what u think about the material woW
He was an excellent professor. Honestly English is not easy for me, but his class really helped. My first paper I got an F and I panicked. His feedback is very good and due to his extra credit, you really cannot fail. I ended up with a B. He was a very nice professor and he cares about his students.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. There were no major tests except for one quiz. In his class, you have to write a lot of papers. I'm not an English major but I enjoyed writing his papers. Before turning in any paper, get a critique from SmartThinking and student success center, and you will get +15 extra points. The final was an in-class paper.
HE IS JUST AWESOME! He does his best for you and your success. A lot of extra credit and opportunities to get a good grade in his class. He even gives you good positive advice. Class might be boring sometimes, but COME ON it is English, and he does his best for making interesting it.
He grades heavily on grammar and sentence structure. Especially on comma splices, if you don't know what that is I suggest you figure it out bc he takes off 10 point for the 1st one and then 5 points for each after that. What really confused me was when he told me to "look it up on YouTube" when I asked for help in identifying and fixing them.
I took Dr. Smith for Honors English COMP1, and I loved his class. His exams are essays that he assigns 3 weeks prior to the deadline. Gives extensions if he sees the student putting in an effort. Gives about 2 big opportunities to replace the essay grades via extra credit. Makes his grading criteria clear since day 1. Helps students throughout.
He does not have his semester planned out, he takes the class day by day and only grades 5/10 essays he gives out. At the end of the course he only has 5 hings in the grade book. In class he does not go over anything related to the essays he grades, and is always off topic.
This is a awesome professor who is very fair on his grading and he gives his student more then a fair chance to complete their work. Many of the tutors in Student Success are great people who came from professor Greg Smith classes. They help many other student to succeed in their class projects.
Dr. Smith is a great professor. He helped me pick my research topic and gave me some sources too. He wants to help every student to the best of his ability. Being a English teacher, he does expects students to have knowledge on grammar, punctuation and especially comma splices. 4 essays and 1 final research. Makes grading criteria clear since day 1
This Professor is always off topic, I would not recommend anyone to take his class. He also comes across as rude especially if you do not meet his expectations in writing assignments.
The Professor has good topics, give great research papers, helps with topics and guides you to where you might be able to find sources. He is very respected by all of us that has really taken his classes. But, he did not have a ENG- 1301 class this Spring my little sister tried to take a spring 2019 class and there was none for Professor Smith.
I tried to take Comp 1301 in the spring 2019 with Professor Greg Smith to find out he did not have a spring 2019 class for 1301.
I took him for ENG 1302 and he was amazing! He truly cares for his students and he helps them whenever they need it. You only have to buy/rent the main textbook and he supplies all the books you read for your essays. His pet peeves are comma splices and vague pronouns. If you avoid those and have good grammar it's an easy A. I highly recommend him.
I took Professor Smith for summer credit and I really enjoyed his class. Writing has always been my #1 weakness but this class really helped me improve. He passed out many helpful worksheets, that guide you as youre writing. Also he provided textbooks. We only turned in hard copies of our essays where he would give feedback. Great professor.
He gets off topic very easily and is scattered with his lectures. Assignments arent difficult at all if you know what you are doing. His grading is very strict with comma splices. He focuses more on punctuation than anything else. Btw you dont need his textbooks at all. DONT take this class if youre bad at English Ive seen many kids struggle.
I took him in the fall for composition 1. It was an 8 week class. Hes a great professor, if youre lazy you will get behind. Always something to do in class. Hes a tough grader and honest. He is willing to help you pass his class if you have trouble. I would take him again.
If you do not like talking about politics or are conservative, I do not recommend Dr. Smith. There was not one class period where he did not mention something about politics. The class was easy, but you have to be careful about grammar and punctuation in your writing.
Dr. Smith was an exemplary professor, genuinely caring and concerned with the benefit of his students. He made assignments very clear and provided multiple sources to assist in writing techniques. He was very present even teaching online and made himself available quickly to answer any questions. He graded papers fairly and with helpful feedback.
He was really good about grading papers. He tells you what hes looking for and grades you off that. He did help me get better with my comma splices and sentence fragments. Overall he actually teaches you something and will help those who arent strong writers.
He won't give you an easy A, but you'll become a much better writer because he forces you to improve! He even helped me with a letter of recommendation the following semester.
Very friendly and surprisingly relatable for his age. encourages small talk outside of work.
If you participate in class you give extra credit. He reads the lectures during class. Does not give heavy assignments. Beware of the Technicalities in grammar punctuation and sentence structure etc. he watches for those things.
Professor Smith is someone who knows a lot of information but cannot relay it properly to save his life. While lecturing he will get distracted and start talking about controversial topics. Grades very strictly. I have yet to make above a C on a paper after only making A's on any other paper I have ever written for a class. I 11/10 DO NOT RECCOMEND
He is a very good professor, he takes everything very lightly though. He talks the whole period about a book or a story. There are a lot of papers to turn in, but he will extend the deadlines for almost every paper. He is very easy because he understands that you have other classes. However, it can get kind of boring listening to him in class.
Nice and fair professor. Took him for english 1302 and had five essays that all had topics pertaining to short stories. He's an easy grader as long as you don't make comma splice errors or major grammar mistakes.
felt like this class was a waste of time. I did not learn anything and everything he talked about was basically useless. sat in the class and basically did work for other classes. He's very picky on his papers and there was a total of 4 due the whole semester.
At first I didn't like Professor Smith, but he grew on me over time. I took 1302 as a summer course. He has ADHD and switches topics a lot during lectures (it can be hard to follow). Five papers total. Had to read The Great Gatsby. Gave extra 10 pts on papers for going to the writing center. Nice guy and class. A stickler for comma splices
I took Professor Smith's Later British Literature class during summer (ENGL 2323). We wrote four papers, including a course reflection that covered authors, such as James Joyce, Ian Fleming, and James Bond. He gave us prompt options and was flexible with turning in our papers. I would take him again because he's understanding, and straightforward.
Professor Smith taught an online course but did not know how to use blackboard. That was ok though! No DBs and only grades were on the 4 papers which he would give 100s if you put in effort. I had to email all my assignments to him. He lost my essays a few times which stressed me out a touch but he did not count them as late and gave full credit.
I enjoyed the class. He's kind of a casual speaker/lecturer so it wasn't apparent how much he knew at first, but I think he really wants to guide students to a deeper understanding of literature without forcing a particular interpretation. He understands that not everyone likes reading and he links video resources and audiobooks. Excellent.
This class is so random every week, but it's great. Smith is a good professor and somehow manages to make the class whole class laugh. He is a pretty hard grader, but he makes you aware of your mistakes and provides written feedback. The class itself is not very hard, and he doesn't give out quizzes. Just show up and pay attention and you'll be ok.
I didn't expect to enjoy his class as much as I did. He is funny which makes his class more tolerable for someone who may not like English. It is one of the easiest college classes I've taken because he never gave exams or quizzes. You can tell he loves what he teaches and cares about his students passing.
Very calm and funny guy, he is a great professor
There are a lot of papers and he can be picky at times but he is a funny professor. participation matters to him and if you become a favorite student he will give you extra points. he also does super easy extra credit opportunities.
Pretty easy Prof, though rigorous content, if you ask me. I think those who are complaining against him here and writing uncomplimentary stuff are disconnect from this amazing prof's success- fostering strategies.
Professor Smith may have some idiosyncrasies, but if you engage with his system, it works well. Helpful tips: read the textbook, attend class, and use Unstuckstudy ai for study prep - it saved me time.
His class is not very hard and he does not grade harshly, only taking away points for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and formatting errors. He offers an additional 10 points on papers if you go to the writing center to get it reviewed. He gets side tracked in class, but is very funny.
His class overall is very easy since we only had 5 papers. However, I wouldn't take him again, considering the class was almost never productive, and he rambled. I avoided asking questions since he typically comes off as rude most of the time, especially if you aren't the person who participates a LOT in class. He also often talks about politics.
He was so so nice! I really enjoyed his class, it was a great environment and he was so funny. He was a bit of a tough grader, but overall he made me a strong writer and reader. The stories and games were also really fun! I'm going to take him next semester too and I'm very excited :)!
