Dr. Szulczewski absolutely loves his job. He is very enthusiastic and runs his class well. He is always willing to answer any questions that you may have, and he makes things interesting. He is also sympathetic if the class gets behind and has no problem postponing an exam.
He sucks. He tries to be so excited about everything, but he always tells you things that aren't true. Then he tries to make up stuff about it. He is teribble at explaining. The class isn't that hard though, just teach yourself from the book. Weird rules about sig figs; he's weird.
i did not like this professor. he assumes that you will just figure out how to work different problems and his test were pretty hard too. i wouldnt take him again
Greg is a decent teacher if you're into learning more than you need to know. If you can teach yourself well from the book, you will be fine. If you can't, don't take the class.
This guy is the worst teacher in the universe. Damn... he sucks.
hes ok..goes off on tangents about stuff that doesnt matter..have to teach urself and read all the chapters..quizzes sucked always trick questions..tests suck too good luck
This is definately a "teach-yourself" course. He goes by the book and is really clear about which sections will be on the test. Watch out b/c he lets the lab get ahead of the classroom lectures which makes things tough in lab. If you ask a question, he won't answer you directly. The final is definately a bummer.

I don't have the slightest clue where all these negative views are coming from. Sure, his peppiness tends to get annoying at times, but I'd rather have that than the opposite. Tests are straightforward. He gives access to his old exams, and he reuses or slightly modifies old exam questions. And he properly uses PowerPoint.
This guy has loves chemistry and takes his time to make sure the class understands it. He does like to go on tangents, but I still thought the lectures were insightful. His tests arent too bad, pulls alot of questions from old tests.

His tests are HARD. And he will do everything in his power to trick you on them.
I really enjoyed him. The class isn't extremely easy or anything, but that is just Chemistry in general. You have to read the book very thouroughly in order to do well on his tests. He knows what he is talking about and really will help you if you ask.
He's very intelligent, so some people may find him difficult. But, he's extremely fair and never tries to trick you. He loves chemistry too. If you need help with something he is willing. But, he needs to know that you have studied the material before you come to him. Otherwise, he is harder to get help from.
I can't say anything bad about this guy I showed up for a week the entire year and will end up with a B- and I am horrible at chemistry. Show up study the example problems from the book and study the HW and you will do great on the tests. Also all the tests are multiple choice and he rarely does 2 different tests in one class so at worst cheat!
He's a smart guy who loves chemistry and his tests aren't bad at all. He'll throw one tricky question on them that you'd probably catch if you went back and double checked, the rest of the questions are from homework and what he talks about in class. No bonus points but easy overall
He's alright. The tests are pretty easy, I think, if you do the homework and read the text. The labs are exactly the same as ones from gen chem, but they're better because they involve so much less BS. One excel sheet of data and calculations and that's it.
Definitely read the chapters and do all the h/w to study for the tests. The class material is pretty much an advanced gen chem. Labs aren't bad; you pretty much do titrations every time. Not a very good lecturer, so be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching. Also, buy the solutions for the h/w, because he does NOT go over them in class!
Hard class. It's a pretty easy B, but a hard class to make an A in due to the format of his test. Make sure you go to all the labs, and read the chapter more than once. The calculations weren't that bad on his test, but the questions from the chapter reading are very tricky. He was a good professor, and his lectures were interesting.
He was very rude and mean. His test were difficult and he is not a good teacher at all. He is very hard to understand. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He always complains about how much he hates his job.
Dr. S. is a nice guy. No accent. The class is very straight-forward: online homework, lectures, and exams all come directly from the textbook. 25 question multiple choice exams, relatively easy. Attendance optional. He tries his best to break up the monotony of lectures, cracks jokes often. Overall, best science teacher I've had since 7th grade.
He is way harder than most of these comments make him look. While he is a nice guy and is very helpful, the tests are nearly impossible without some form of outside help. And he only gives two chances on HW problems, so even with a lot of effort I got a 70 HW grade.
A good lecturer. The notes you take will be understandable, and he tries his best to make the material relevant. The tests accurately reflected the notes & sample problems. However, he is not a nice guy. He will make you feel like an idiot if you ever ask a question & normally doesn't even answer it. Make sure you study the homework problems!
Prob the worst class I have taken at Alabama. He's one of those guys that can't simplify the material to teach it. Class was completely discouraging and made me want to change majors. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Szulczewski made the subject material, as much as is possible, interesting to learn. I took his 102 class over the summer, and I definitely recommend it because it went by so fast. The class is a lot of work (READ THE TEXTBOOK!), but if you really want it, it is very possible to get an A. Also, he doesn't take attendance, but but go to class!
Dr. S gets very excited about what he teaches which makes the class very interesting. Gives daily quizes that aren't hard just go to class because it factors in to your grade. HW was online and fairly easy. He gives MC 25 question tests which can be good or bad for you. miss a few and you have a B. Overall exciting teacher! I would take again!
He can be very rude at times AND never clearly explains how to work problems, neither does the book. Every time you do it the way he shows, it ends up he wanted something else. I have lost all interest in chemistry because of this man.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took AP chemistry in high school and it didn't help. He has powerpoints but they do not relate to test material. He tries to make class interesting but he gets off topic easily. I went to him for help and basically got none.
This class is EXTREMELY difficult. You must read the book every night, and multiple times to understand it. Went to his office after class and he was kind, but that didn't change the difficulty of the class. Must do HW to understand material, and each assignment took me about 8hrs to complete. HW=hard. Exams=hard. This guy=nice, decent lecturer.
Not the easiest class, but certainly not the hardest. He's not a bad teacher either, though he is pretty easily excitable. As long as you know everything from the lectures, especially the calculations, you'll be fine. The lab TA was really good, too, but she's sadly not TAing again. Do be careful in lab, as your grade is largely based on accuracy.
Had Dr. S for honors gen chem, and while he has a few faults as a lecturer (poor speaker, doesn't word things well) i definitely recommend taking him. Hes extremely bright and more importantly, he's extremely excited about the subject matter. Know coming in however that ur gonna have to use the textbook a lot. Study hard and he will reward you.
I just took Dr. S the first part of this summer. I was dreading this class since it was all crammed into a month but Dr. S enjoys his job and cares about his students. He always made sure he was consistent with the textbook and he would re-explain material that anyone was having trouble with.Read and go to class and you'll be fine.Great professor!
I have had this teacher twice so far (CH 102 and CH 223). This class was not difficult but his quizzes are what messed up grades because he uses a Straight Scale. I made A's on his test and he is very eager to help. Also, the lab is a huge part of your grade and you need to be very precise (98-99% recovery rate)
Avoid this professor if possible. Avoid taking honors chem if possible. I took two chem classes in high school including AP chem which i made a 104 in, and yet Szulczewski made this class difficult. He does not care at all about teaching or his students. He is only at UA for research, and it shows. once again, avoid if possible. doable if necessary
Let's talk about how terrible Szulczewski is. He is only at the university for research. He is scatterbrained and his lectures do not prepare you entirely for the exam. Even the textbook supplementation didn't help. He is not very approachable and doesn't answer the necessary questions. His exams are too hard for a 100 level class. The end.
Going to this guys lectures are pointless. He is never prepared and makes many mistakes. Test have off the wall questions that have nothing to do with lecture/book. Final exam is a joke 50 questions completely different from the prior 4 exams. Dodge him if you can lab is the only thing that let me get a B in the class.
This guy is very obviously only at the university to carry out his research. Prior to teaching our class, he hadn't taught 102 for quite a while. His tests are much harder than the examples he gives in class and on homework. He doesn't use powerpoint and half the problems he does on the board he does wrong. Take Dr. Street if his class isn't full.
Pretty good teacher.
Dr. Szulczewski was one of my favorite professors at UA. His lectures are optional but if you attend every class and every recitation you have an example of almost every type of problem he''ll ask on the test. The tests are tough but fair. Many problems come straight from the hw. Very easy to understand always read before class it helps
Really enjoys teaching. Very helpful. No extra credit. Very unthusiastic and gives good lectures. Great for freshman chem.
He stays away from PowerPoint lectures which are more boring than white paint drying on a white wall. He teaches on the white boards and always writes the important things down. Taking notes are easy in this class. He emphasizes what will be on the tests. Expect Clicker questions every class. You can still pass without going to class, but it helps.
He delivered the information clearly and would help you understand any part of the lecture. Tests aren't bad. The examples he gives in class are very similar to the questions on the exams. Takes attendance every class with clickers. I rarely used the book because if he doesn't go over it in class then it will not be on the test.
Really great professor. You have to work for a good grade, but Dr. S makes it very possible. There are never any surprises on the exams and he always gives out papers that will say exactly what will be covered on the exam. He's always there to help and holds recitation. Don't expect to pass if you don't show up though and don't DO THE WORK.
Good professor for chem. He's a good teacher and a nice guy. He won't curve at all though. If you pay attention and do decent on the homework the tests are fine. Homework is hard and there's a lot. Sit in the front if you have bad vision, he writes everything on the board. Overall, he's good.
Great professor, and a great course. Examples are given in class for what the tests will be like. I did well on the tests, but had MUCH difficulty on the final exam. The exam was a lot of new material we hadn't been tested on yet. NO curves whatsoever and NO extra credit. Lots of homework as well. This class was difficult but you can do it.
He's a great guy who does his best to make sure you understand the material if you go to his office hours. As long as you do the homework and go to lecture and do some practice problems you should be fine. NOTE: HE DOESN'T CURVE TESTS!!
He is a very smart guy and a pretty decent teacher, but his tests are HARD. Attend every lecture and make the time to study. If I had figured out how to study sooner, I would've done better.
Dr. Skjdhfgjalkd (never quite learned his name) is a really smart guy, but he is not fit to be a CH101 instructor. He assumed his students have prior experience with chemistry although most of them have not taken a chem class since sophomore year of high school. His tests are hard, and he doesn't curve them. He is condescending and arrogant.
He actually writes things out on the board instead of reading off a power point so its easy to follow.
I loved Dr. Szulczewski for chemistry 101. He teaches up on the white boards and is easy to follow. He tells you everything that is on the test. I found his class really interesting and really learned a lot of new things I didn't know about chemistry. I would definitely go to class and there is a lot of homework but it helps for his tests.
Dr. Szulczeski is a great! No, he is not foreign. His lectures are old fashioned and he writes everything on the board. All of the homework is online but make sure to pace yourself on the homework and do it as you go. The tests are very straight-forward as long as you study the notes he gives you and do the homework. You need the book and code.
He does not make it easy for you but this is college and you're supposed to learn how to do things on your own. He tells you before almost every test that you have to read the book on your own and if you do that, the homework, attend lectures and recitation you will pass. He was a great teacher and have a great understanding of chemistry now.
Any Chem 104 class is going to be hard, make sure you bring a notebook and pen because you can't take notes on your laptop. Long lectures and everything is on the whiteboard. Questions?... office hours only. However sit front row and pay attention and you can make a B
I loved Dr. Szulczewski! Funny and knowledgeable, and developed a good banter with our class. Makes sure concepts that are usually difficult are understood before moving on. Definitely caters to the majority nursing and nutrition students and will make connections to health and medicine for more relevance. Nice guy, cares about his students a lot
Any CH104 class you take will be hard but this one wasn't awful. Clear outline of what would be on tests/final. All lectures are on whiteboards and he walks through examples in class. Go to recitation, it helps a lot! Office Hours are a good place to go with questions, he doesn't answer a lot of them during class.
Szulczewski is a great teacher! He cracks a joke here and there and makes sure everyone is engaged and understands what he is teaching! I highly recommend him for Chem 104 and would suggest taking him MWF so the classes are more split apart
I loved Dr Szulczewski's class. He is a great teacher. The tests are hard but as long as you memorize how to do the homework problems and study the notes he writes on the board you will do great. He also loves teaching and always makes sure the students stay engaged by doing funny examples or jokes. Best Chem teacher I've ever had.
I loved Dr. Szulczewski's class for CH104, he has been by far one of the best teachers I have had on campus. He really enjoys teaching and wants his students to learn and helps them get involved. Do the practice problems and read the study guides and it is overall a very easy class as long as you put forth an effort.
Dr. Szulczewski is an amazing chem teacher. I always struggled with Chemistry until I took his class. He keeps the students engaged & his lectures are never boring. His tests can be challenging but as long as you study the homework and notes he gives you, you will do great. He also writes the notes on the board instead of using boring power points.
Positives: Great professor, excellent way of communicating with students, you will learn the material in an easier way than other professors, motivated about what he talks about Negatives: Tests are hard, homework is EVEN HARDER, tough grading scale, not willing to help you out with grade at end of semester, too much theory not enough math
Dr. S. was a great chemistry professor. I liked the way he was interactive with his lectures and didn't just read straight off the power points. Some negatives though are that he does not scale and he doesn't give any extra credit opportunities. However I think if you listen and take notes in the lectures and do your homework you'll be fine.
Pros: easy to understand, write notes on board v. power points, funny, very clear expectations of class Cons: no extra credit/scaling, tests are harder than they appear (but if you study you'll be fine), somewhat condescending. NOTE: listen to him when he says you can't study for final one week before - study a little bit every so often!!
Dr. Szulczewski is a great teacher, that being said his tests were very difficult. It's not a super easy class and it didn't help that it was at 8 am. No attendance grade but everyone i know that missed class ended up failing
If you struggle in chemistry any prof you take will be tough, but if you're willing to work then he may be your best bet. Really tries to keep students engaged and make long lectures bearable. Smart guy who's easy to understand and is more than willing to do examples and answer questions. Tests are hard, but his expectations are always clear.
Great teacher and had interesting lectures. A lot of the course depends on knowledge of the material in the book. Tests are about 65% conceptual questions and 35% math questions. He's a nice guy and a good teacher, but doesn't give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to grading.
He's amazing! Take his class! No extra credits but he's easy to understand.
Chemistry is never going to be a easy class, but I recommend Greg. He is actually really good at teaching the subject in a dumbed down way so we understand. The tests were short, but most of your grade is from tests. He drops your lowest test grade. Very few homework, and go to recitation, it helps!! He's funny sometimes too
Chemistry isn't one of my strengths, but Szulczewski is great! He makes a 140 person honors lecture feel interactive and intimate. I would definitely recommend reading the chapter outside of class, but that's just because honors chem is a difficult class overall. Szulczewski is always willing to help any students who ask for it.
He is a nice guy with a good sense of teacher humor. He teaches chemistry pretty well and doesn't give as much homework as some of the other teachers.
He probably one of your best choices for Chemistry. Class is hard but doable. Tests are reasonable. He makes his lectures engaging and he acts like he enjoys teaching the class. Only real complaint is that sometimes he will only briefly cover one of the topics in lecture but you are still expected to understand it. No extra credit or rounding.
Really great professor, really knows what he is talking about. Tries to make lectures entertaining and really loves what he does. Tests are a little hard but nothing unreasonable. Reading the textbook thoroughly helps for the tests. Homework isn't unreasonable.
He is a great professor. He knows his stuff, and he is very accessible if you have questions or need help.
He was funny during some of his lectures, but very condescending every time he was asked questions. There. Was. So. Much. Homework.I found myself spending hours and hours and hours doing homework and studying for this class and still couldn't manage an A. He did not seem very caring or willing to help.
Dr. Szulczewski was an awesome teacher! He understands his students and know chem can be boring, so he will spice class up with doing demonstrations with students or adds humor to stuff. His tests were pretty had, make sure you read the textbook. His homework could be hard, but he gave you plenty of time to finish them. Go to labs!!
Mr. Szulczewski is a very caring professor. He makes sure to have time to meet with you if you need help. The class is a bit tough but doable. Reading the textbook is key as well as attending every lecture for a good grade. He drops the lowest test grade so if you have one bad grade, do not stress. I would definitely take his class again.
Dr. S is a very good chemistry teacher. Tests can be difficult but with enough studying it's doable. He is usually available to help and is able to convey the information easilty.
Hardest class I have taken. Great guy, really interested in helping students learn. Hard to do well because no attendance points to boost grade. Also no extra credit. Mandatory class if you want to do well. Cracks jokes during class to keep us awake. Doesn't use powerpoint notes, writes on white board which is actually very helpful.
Dr. Szulczewski is probably your best bet for a chemistry professor. He is smart and engaging with the class, and relays the material well. That being said, chemistry is a hard subject and his tests don't make it any easier. I had to do a solid amount of studying to receive an okay grade. Also, there isn't too much or too little homework.
Dr. Szulczewski is amazing! This was my first semester at UA, and he was my fav! Funny & is passionate about chem. That being said, the class is hard. You have to work for your grade. READ YOUR TEXTBOOK and work practice problems from the homework, then its manageable. Honors chem also includes lab reports... WORST THING EVER. Takes HOURS to do.
I have taken Dr. S for both of CH117 and CH102. He is the best professor I have had during my time at Alabama. The class is very lecture heavy but he follows the book very well. He is also the kind of guy that remembers your name and will talk to you if you see him outside of class. He is very helpful during office hours if you need help.
I had him for CH 117 and he was phenomenal as well. I absolutely recommend him and wish he would teach me every chemistry class I have to take! He cares, he is excellent at explaining, he is a wonderful teacher. His tests are easy, his homework is easy. He is always available outside of class. TAKE HIM! I got an A in CH 117 and likely A+ for 102.
I had him for 117 and took him for 102 because I loved his class so much. He is a great chem professor! You do have to put in time and effort into the class to make a good grade. Tests are 4 exams with 25 questions, so there is not much room for error. NO extra credit. Grades consist of exams, lab, homework, and final. Homework takes forever...
I loved having Dr. Szulczewski. I had him for CH117 and I took him for 102 also even though it was an 8am class just because he was such an amazing professor. He really cares about his students and is there to help you when you need it. He really wants you to understand the topic. The tests are fair and you will do well if you study and go to class
Dr. Szulczewki is an amazing professor! He nerds our over the material we cover which is refreshing, especially after Leung. He is passionate about chemistry and makes 8 am lectures really fun and exciting. Grades are based on 4 unit tests, lab, and final (all worth 100 pts each). He never tries to trick you and always sets us up for success
Dr. Szulczewski is a fantastic professor! I would highly recommend him for Chem 101/102/117/118. He is a very knowledgeable man and I enjoyed his class very thoroughly. The recitations are not mandatory but they are highly encouraged.
I took Dr. Szulczewski for both 117 and 102. I absolutely loved his class! He did plenty of examples during his lectures to make sure the concepts were understood. Some questions off the practice tests would be on the actual tests. He always provides formulas and constants. He really tries to make class fun. I would recommend getting a chegg for HW
He kept the course interesting. Great teacher and easy to talk to. Answers all the questions you ask
He is an amazing professor, really invested to help you if you are struggling.
This professor was literally my favorite for my freshman year first semester. Lecture was never boring, even when he said the lecture was going to be. He also carried conversations with his students, which felt nice because it really made it seemed liked he cared about us and not just his job.
Lecture was always litty.
He was my favorite teacher this whole semester.
Szulczewski is hilarious and acts like the campus dad. You have 4 tests throughout the semester, the lowest grade being dropped. If you've had AP chemistry, this class will be lots of review. He does lots of demonstrations during lecture and makes tons of chemistry jokes. You have two sections of homework per chapter, but lotsof time to do it.
Fantastic lecturer, really enjoys to teach and makes chemistry very easy to pay attention in.
He's one of the best lecturers I've had. He doesn't use powerpoint which makes it a little difficult to study outside of class, but it is really easy to follow when you're in class. Attendance not taken. Homework isn't bad and really helps prepare you for the tests. Not an extremely hard class, but you have to work in order to make a good grade.
Honestly, he's your best bet for general chemistry, but that doesn't make him good. His tests increasingly get much more difficult as the semester goes on so beware. His final is incredibly difficult, and he doesn't curve so it could pull a good grade to an average grade. I started off with a solid A in the class and may make a B or C,READ THE BOOK
He was honestly the best chem professor I have taken from at Alabama. He cracks jokes in class and makes lectures interesting. The class isn't mandatory, but it does hurt if you don't go. He does a lot of problems that will be on the exam in class and recitation.
So his lectures are great. his test are fair. but beware of the final!!! i studied extremely hard and went into the final with a solid A (my test average was a 92%) and came out of the class with a C+. he wont curve despite the fact that most of the class dropped MORE THAN A LETTER GRADE after the final.
Greg makes you want to pay attention in class with his hilarious demonstrations. He wants his students to pass and do well. His tests do not have any trick questions as they are directly from the notes and homework. You should go to his recitation classes at night where he tells you exactly what will be on the test.
I am currently in Szulczewski's Chemistry 101 class. He is a great professor! This class is not an easy A, but it is do-able if you work for it. He is a teacher that actually teaches!! I have heard from other students he is the best 101 teacher for Chemistry. Showing up to class and recitation hours are key!!!
Good professor! Teaches well and is very entertaining. Very clear grading criteria and the tests are crucial to passing, fortunately he drops your lowest. Not an easy A but it is very possible.
Definetly recommenced 10/10 just make sure you go to class everyday!
Funny
Honestly the best chem professor at Alabama
Not only does Szulczewski make his lectures fun and not boring, his homework and tests are definitely doable as long as some effort is put in to study and pay attention. By far, this guy is the one you want for a general chemistry class!!! Currently crying because hes not teaching a CH102 next semester and I enjoy his class so much...
This class itself is difficult, but if you did well in high school chemistry, you should do pretty well in this class. There is quite a bit of homework, but you have a lot of time to do it. He's really passionate about what he teaches, and he's always willing to help students out.
I found his lecture style ineffective and he is rude to students who ask him questions. He was rude to me when I scheduled an appointment outside of his normal office hours (he was 30 minutes late and proceeded to yell at me). Final was SO hard, the questions were WAY harder than any other problems ever attempted in the course.
The chemistry department at UA isnt stellar, and Dr. Szulczewski is no exception. Everything about the class was extremely easy... until we got to the final. He was unclear about the material and there were six (I counted) typos which he changed periodically throughout the final. I received all As in the other tests and a 62 percent on the final.
He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Sometimes he comes off as rude, but I don't think it is intentional. If you aren't willing to put in the work, then you won't get a good grade. The recitations are very helpful; he gives out practice problems resembling those on the upcoming exam. He's really funny and makes chem bearable!
Dr. Szulczewski is by far your best bet for chem 101. He gives you a formula sheet on all the tests, they're all multiple choice, and he puts a study guide on Blackboard before all the exams. He's a good lecturer, he's funny, and there aren't any surprises on the tests- he just asks about stuff you do in class/on the homework.
Dr. Szulczewski is a passionate professor for chemistry and really loves to lecture, making each lecture interesting. Attendance is not necessary, but the lectures are the only way to get the information. The book is helpful to understand concepts better, but he does a good job of teaching. The final is harder than the tests, so be ready!
He is really passionate about chem and you can tell he wants his students to understand. Test questions aren't tricky and they come from homework and recitation. I didn't read the book at all. The final is harder than the other tests just because of the way he words the problems. Pay close attention to the units and you'll do well.
szulcweski had the best lectures!! his final was impossible though, i had an a in the class then made an f on the final
Greg was easily the best professor I could have had to start off my year at Alabama. He was clear and easy to understand. Made an A average on his tests (he gives one drop grade) yet got a C on his final which brought my overall grade down significantly. Still greatly respect him and am so glad I was able to have him for this course. Take Greg!
Szulczewski is a great teacher. He teaches everything that is on the tests and there are no surprises. The class is just a hard class. It takes lots of studying which includes reading the book and taking your time on the homework.
He is a great chem professor and would highly recommend him. The material itself can be very difficult, but he does a great job of explaining it. He is always willing to help students and teaches everything that is on the test. Mastering chemistry is necessary to pass the class, but I also used the text book for practice problems and clarification.
Super funny and passionate about class. Need to go to recitations to pass class.
Hes your best bet for chem. Fair tests except for final was harder than it needed to be. Never skipped class but definitely could have. You could just read the textbook and know everything you need to. Worst part about chem is the labs, not the actual class
He gives great lectures but the tests were very hard and some of the ways he explains concepts are unclear
GO TO CLASS. I noticed a huge difference in my grade when I went to the lectures. He is so funny that class is never boring. Tests are not crazy hard if you study well, plus you get a drop test. Homework is not extensive, and it really helps you on the tests. Your lab grade is also 20% of your overall grade. Chem is hard, but he is the best choice.
Like everyone else is saying, GO TO CLASS. The recitation isn't mandatory, but the questions covered during it resemble the exam questions. The final is a little harder than the regular exams, but if you study you should do fine.
Seems like a good guy who is very knowledgeable about the course. I had a B+ going into the final and seemed pretty confident leaving. I ended up with a C- in the class if it gives you any perspective on the final. It was unnecessarily deceiving and very tricky wording.
I had a good grade going into the final, and then got an F on the final exam. It was really deceiving and the wording made it so hard. Other than that, he's great.
Always a good time if you will actually appreciate his profound knowledge of chemistry. He will never fail to help you understand a topic. He also always welcomes questions.
Greg is a fantastic Chemistry professor and is passionate about the subject. The class isn't the easiest to teach, but he manages to make it understandable. There are just some things about Chemistry you cannot make easier, and he makes sure to warn his students about it. Tests aren't tough except for the final exam, which dropped my A to a B.
Great professor! Test questions come from lectures and his recitation is very helpful. He doesn't take attendance, but I would still go to class. Only homework is online homework which takes a while but is very helpful for the test.
Dr. Szulczewski is the BEST professor for Chem 101, but his class is always at 8 AM so if you aren't a morning person it won't work. He doesn't post his lectures online so it is important to go to his class, but he is a great teacher and worth waking up early for!!!
Good professor for Chemistry. His lectures were always a little boring but he knows the material well. He never really checked for attendance when I took his class but I felt it was always important to go.
Amazing professor and actually made chem enjoyable. He is knowledgable in his field and does a great job explaining the abstract concepts in chem. His tests are fair and representative of problems seen before in class or recitation. If you keep up with the homework and studying you will do well in his class.
Was not a horrible professor at first. Although he was a nice guy, he always just wrote out notes with a pen instead of using a powerpoint. His final is extremely hard compared to other chem classes. Almost everyone failed it. No accommodations were given at all considering we are in a global pandemic and barely got lab. Disappointed...
Dr. Szulczewski is a really great professor that actually made chem enjoyable for me. He's super helpful, always accessible, and responds to emails quickly which is crazy regarding CH101 is a 300 person lecture. Despite this, his final exam is INCREDIBLY challenging and will lower your grade, so be prepared.
Wasnt a bad professor, but didnt put in any effort to get his web cam fixed for classes. I personally would not take him again. If you make bad he will constantly remind you that its a marathon not a sprint and point the blame towards you.
Terrible, 70% of the class failed the final.
I loved Greg. Best chem teacher I've ever had. I listened to all of his lectures, took notes, and got 100, 96, 88, and 100 on his tests. There is one drop test. The homework is reasonable, and there is only one assignment per unit. The final was REALLY hard though, 70% of my class made below a C. Still would recommend him over the other teachers.
He's a decent lecturer, but I had an A average on tests and got a D on the final. Dropped me a whole letter grade. Final was unnecessarily tricky and difficult. Not the worst teacher, so you won't die if you take him, but if you can avoid him I would.
Professor Szulczewski was great for most of the semester - he explains topics well and really makes sure that everyone understands. However, his final is impossibly difficult. Many students, myself included, got As on all of the exams but did not do well on the final. Definitely take that into consideration if you're thinking about his class!
It was a fall 2020 hybrid COVID class, so I don't want to be too harsh, but he kind of fell off toward the end. Great lecturer. The tests weren't bad at all--25 question multiple choice online with a camera, but the final had a couple of incorrect questions and the entire class did terribly. He was kind of rude about it and didn't change much.
I took this course as a first semester freshman during the COVID online class period. His lectures are solid and help a lot, however his tests are pretty hard. If you study, you can get an A on the tests, but not the final. Almost my whole section bombed the final and had their grade drop a whole letter. I went from getting a B to a C so be warned.
Contrary to what I read here on Greg's page, He's an amazing professor. The tests difficulty level are mediocre. Like any exam you take, you have to prepare at least a week in advance. I honed my study skills and found myself doing better in each test. Attendance isn't mandatory but I'd suggest going to class because of the examples he presents.
The class isn't too bad, definitely better than professors that my friends took. Recitations are really helpful, I found them more valuable than the lecture portion of class especially if you read the book. Tests are very straightforward and he gets you your grades quickly.
Greg is a solid professor when it comes to lectures and content, but as many other students will tell you, the tests are horribly difficult, especially the final. You either spend weeks studying or expect at least a letter grade drop from it. Keep this in mind before deciding to slack off in his class. Not the worst, but would not recommend.
I really liked Dr. Szulczewski! His lectures were helpful and well-prepared, during recitations he provided many practice problems very similar to what would show up on exams, and I honestly found his exams to be very fair. If you aren't prepared to study as you would in any other class, you will not do well, but if you put in effort you'll do fine
Dr. S goes over exactly what is going to be on the tests and final exam. He gives plenty of example problems and gives study guides for all of the tests, and even for the final exam. Most people on here say that his final is very difficult, however it is about the same as his tests. If you go to class regularly and study you will do great.
Szulczewski is a great CH 101 professor. His lectures and recitation are usually very helpful but Ive heard he can be impatient during office hours. For the homework, the textbook problems helped me the most. His final is a bit harder than his typical exams but very manageable if you study. I ended with an A+ and would definitely take him again.
This prof is the best choice for CH 101 by far. He tries his hardest to make lectures fun and interesting. This class is not easy but if you work for it you can easily do well. I highly recommend taking him!
Dr. Szulczewski gets off topic easily, but he does make most of his lectures entertaining. His tests are difficult and it helps greatly if you have a strong chemistry background. If you don't, this class will be much harder for you. I was a bit freaked out about his cumulative final, but it really wasn't as bad as everyone on here says.
Final is rough. Put yourself in a good position early on to not have to rely on a good final grade to get your desired grade in the class. Tests have some tricky questions to ensure that you know the concepts well. Overall, Greg is very enthusiastic about chemistry and a good explainer. He made my 8 AM lecture fun to attend.
Greg is a really great teacher. What makes his class difficult is its dependence on four exams (lowest one gets dropped) plus the final. They are only 25 questions so it's easy to get a low grade. This class was easier than AP Chemistry but not the easiest class ever. Overall, Greg is passionate and funny and lectures well. Would highly recommend!
Tests are overall fair representations of content. Do a thorough review of the more difficult concepts though for the final, as he tends to pick those instead of the generic stuff. Final exam is where grades go down in this class.
Dr. Szulczewski is an amazing professor, he truly loves this subject and tries hard to make it understandable to different learning styles but you will have to put in the work inside and outside of lecture. Don't come in thinking you wont have to study just bc you took AP Chem, this will humble you. go to class!! you will not pass well if you skip.
Dr. Szulczewski was a very reasonable chem professor. The tests are difficult, but if you give yourself time to study you will do fine. The final is not as bad as everyone claims, I made a 92 and started studying about two weeks out. The chem department is not great, but he may be one of your safest bets.
BE WILLING TO LEARN/PUT EFFORT IN/HAVE A GOOD TIME (ITS A MARATHON) I took ap chem in high school and struggled tremendously then (super fast-paced). This content is not hard in itself. The issue is people wait to study and the test only allows few mistakes (25q). He as a person and teacher is phenomenal. HOW DO I KNOW? I WENT TO HIS OFFICE HOURS.
Szulczewski tells you exactly straightforward what to expect on the first day of class. I didn't appreciate that he discouraged students which made some drop out however take everything as motivation and everything will be good. Highly recommend studying for all the tests in advance including the final. Also don't blame others for your downfall.
The energy he lectures with makes it very obvious that he genuinely loves chemistry. Recitation is your best friend because that's where you'll get problems similar to test questions so don't skip them. Uses students to demonstrate concepts that aren't as straightforward which makes it both fun and comprehendible.
Dr Szulczewski was an incredible professor, and I am thankful that I was in his CH 101 class. Because of how he taught lectures (writing down the information himself rather than using pptxs) I was able to easily keep up with what he was teaching and take notes in the same manner. The recitations were excellent preparation for the exams as well.
He 100% deletes his bad reviews. Do not take him. He wants you to fail. Worst class I have ever taken at UA.
Dr. Szulczewski is an excellent lecturer and enjoys the material he is teaching. During class, he would often go on tangents about the topics he was discussing, but always brought it back to the topic at hand, while showing how chem is an interesting subject. His recitations are very informative and reflect on the exams given.
Prof. Szulczewski is an engaging lecturer who makes chemistry interesting. While the tests are challenging, put in the work and use resources like unstuck ai to excel. Attend class and recitations for the best results.
Very tough class. Worked hard for an A-. He is a good professor but often gets sidetracked and the lack of extra credit and difficult tests makes for a tough A. There are no practice exams and be ready for the final because it will most likely knock your grade down a bit, no matter how much you study.
After taking 102 with Allred, I've realized how awful of a professor Szulchewski is. There is no grace with grading, and he recognizing that Chem is a “hard subject” but then does nothing to favor the student. Meanwhile, students are slaving away for even a B in a 101 class. People say 102 is easier, but that's because of the professor, NOT content
There are two Rate My Professor pages for him: one under Greg and one under Gregory. If you did well in high school chem, you'll be fine. He starts off intense but isn't terrible. However, he really struggles to explain concepts clearly; his teaching methods are confusing and often make topics harder to grasp (e.g., using people of pens for VESPR)
Very smart guy but doesn't use it to undermine students. Great lectures, explains things in simple analogies. Took time to talk to me and help me when I went to office hours. Chill guy, cracks some jokes, likes golf. Gives practice problems for tests. Never studied in HS but had to put in 5-10 hours of practice before each test and got A-.
