I got the same email about ppl flamin prof umbach so i too am going to defend the man he was fair very funny very good obviously theres one or two people posting overnover on this site so who knows the truth but no1 dissed his teaching in my class

my $.02: we all complained about the work but except for a few cry babies the class really liked him unless they were lying to me he grades fairly. he makes it intersting. he helps u out. what else do you want. Ok, the work was a little over the top

Generally I liked him. He is very smart, has a lot of useful examples. If you don't understand, he explains again. But amount of home is HUGE :). But he doesn't give midterms or finals. Just homeworks, papers and couple of quizes.

Great teacher! Sure there is a lot of work but more chance to bring up your grade! He tells you what you need to know by the homeworks & makes everything tie together and clear. I hated history & I actually ENJOY this class! I would take him again, just be prepared to write and youll be fine!

I don't like the way he teaches and the amount of work that he assigns. He doesn't think about the students free time as a person in society. He is an **** and a fruitcake.

Very difficult workload. Registered into class late, was told that my 1st assign. would count as a zero because I didn't do the work. When all was explained, the grade wasn't removed-I was not allowed to make-up the work. Very difficult prof. to deal with. Work doesn't turn me off; this prof did.

Pro.Umbach demands much from his students. He is a believer that a CUNY student could or should recieve the same type of education as one attending Cornell, Yale, Harvard University. Once you come out of his class, you will be a hell of a better writer. Remember: Claim, Evidence, and Warrant!

There will be a lot of work but thats only b/c he wants you to work for your grade. Why pay tuition to come to school and learn anything. He is very helpful, he gives you his house number and feels hurt if no one calls for help if you needed it. I loved his class enough to take it 2 times,both As.

I got A-...I pulled off an A- here but got worse in my other courses cuz I spent all my time doing homework for this class. His stuff is all online...museum visit, and movies are all involved. Very Challenging. He makes history interesting though.

I would not recommend him at all-- he teaches the class like it is a writing class instead of a History Class. His assignments are way too extensive for what the curriculum calls for, and he gives so much work that you will never have time for your other classes. Avoid this one.

D'uh, its a WRITING INTENSIVE class so hes doing his job. its supposed to be about writing and he teaches really well. but the work is mad hard.

If you are looking to get the most bang for your educational buck take him. He is worth every penny you spend on this course. He is hard, yes, but only if you are lazy and don't like challenges. His homeworks aren't hard just intensive.He uses the internet extensively in his classes, and he's kind of a tech geek. Take him if you are ready to work.

excellent excellent prof. How hard u find him depends on ur schedule. He gives you homework every class and so got to keep on top of it if you work. Lots of writing. But hes cool and you learn lots. Be warned, He fail ppl for plagurism and absences.

Excellent teacher. Homework every class and he likes to assigns essays. He wont just give you that A like some will but hes also pretty fair. You dont have to take the final if you do well on the essays.

Exactly what everyone says, very hard professor in regards to his quizzes , but good at teaching/lectures . U gonna be doing alot of writing bc his quizzes are based on the review questions at the the and u get to use ur notes for all exams so it's going to take up a lot of ur time to write. This professor is extremely hard. It's not that his work is difficult, just very time consuming and long. In class, he is passionate about what he teaches, but at the same time he has class favorites which might be a bit unfair. He also sometimes is very demoralizing, instead of being encouraging.

Just a great teacher and so nice. He wont just hand out that A like you hoped, but it's also not so hard to do well either. You will learn to write. You will learn to write because every week he makes you do it over and over and over and over.

He points out what he wants in our writings and is clear on how we should write our it. His class is easy if directions are followed, otherwise it will be very hard. He gives enough work to keep us busy so if you're the type to do work, I would not advise you to take him.

Prof Umbach was the best Prof I've had so far. The class requires much work but as long as you read, pay attention in class and turn in assignments you will earn a good grade. I found all of his classes interesting but I am a global history major. He always provides help and I have to say after this class I felt my writing in other courses improved

I loved Professor Umbach. He helps you prepare for Graduate School. His work is easy, he explains everything in class and gives you wrtten instructions to complete the work. He provides the literature for you... so no need to buy an expensive texbook. The only way you would find him difficult is if you don't read the material he gives.

Excellent pro. The readings are short but you always have to do writing on them. Classes were fun and the stuff he has you watch is cool. I learned a lot about crime and honestly my write got better

Awesome teacher. Papers are really short but there are lots. Unlike all my other profs, actually responds to email and texts. The films he has you watch are cool

Very difficult grader. Gives long homeworks that can take up 2-3 hours. Very smart but inconsiderate about work and other classes. would not reccommend unless you have nothing to do other than do his homework

You're going to have to work but man he's an amazing professor. If you ever need anything clarified or want to know what you need to increase your grade he's there. He loves teaching. But once you fall behind you're going to have o work double to catch up. Its harder to fail that pass.

He does make you work for it but it's not busy work, it actually helps to do better in other classes too. He's an amazing professor: he is there for you and wants the best for you. If you're lazy and have no motivation in college, don't take his class.

Professor Umbach is a good professor however since my class was a sex work class it sound really interesting and intriguing learning about history of sex work and actually doing a research project. However, his hw are really long and you must take clevwa seriously or you will do horribly on his hwessays. Overall, it was an okay classexperience.

Work assigned is super clear because everything in on the website so you know when everything is due. A lot of reading but essays are not that long longest one was like 3-4 pages. He really preps you for the rest of your time in college and teaches you a lot, just do all the work and you will get a good grade. No textbook needed. Take him!

Professor Umbach is a great man, but his teaching style is tough. He tries to make the class interactive, but its difficult to keep up with all of his homework's. Readings are long 10-15 pages and you get them every class. He is very helpful but even with his help the class is difficult. If you do not have to take this course, don't.

Awesome Professor! Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. Homework every night, if you turn it in the night before class, it's an easy five extra points. Homework is simple, either watching a movie, reading a section of a book, and answering a couple questions.

One of the best professors at John Jay. He is hard so you must be willing to put in a lot of work, but at the end it will all be worth it. My Writing Skills were definitely improved. Can get frustrating during the semester because of the amount of work, but if you are determined you'll do well. Loved him !

Gregory "Fritz" Umbach is an intelligent, talented professor... This man also happens to assign a ship-load of homework every week, and he grades with an iron pen. HOWEVER, he is incredibly careful with his course work. You will be doing everything for a constructive purpose, and he is always available to help you outside of class.

Awesome Prof and interesting class. You watch a lot crime films about NYC. You do have to watch your writing and you do have to read the articles because he makes you use a certain number of quotations in every essay. Some quizzes multiple choice. but your writing will get better. Different ideas than you hear about in CJ classes

Professor Greg "Fritz" Umbach assigns A LOT OF HOMEWORK, readings and is very specific in his way of grading papers, quizzes and homework. He is also quite an intelligent man who is always there to help the students and answer any questions. This was a challenging class but I learnt a lot. I think he is worth taking if you truly want to learn.

Awesome teacher but a hard class. Im a CJ major and I think I learned more about CJ in his history class than I have in my regular classes. He responded to texts at any hour in about 30 secs and looked over all my essays before I submitted them so getting an A was pretty easy. But you do have to do the readings to do decently on his tests.

Awesome prof, but only if you want to learn. If you wanted an easy online class, this isnt that. Its all writing and you have to do the readings. His essay questions are unique and he requires that you use direct quotations so there's no BSing your way through. Read and the class isn't that hard. Really nice prof, always ready to help

My favorite teacher at John Jay. Its true what everyone says. Hes challenging and you have to do the reading. But 90% of it is interesting and you learn a lot. I think I learned more about CJ from him than I learned in my CJ classes and I learned more about writing than I did from my English classes. Easy grader if you learn claim evidence warrant

Awesome professor but challenging AF. He'll answer any question you have even by text at 3:00 AM. Unlike other courses, you actually learn something in this one.

You will learn. Homework nearly every class. He's got this way of asking questions so you have to read. He'll help but only if you've alredy done the reading.
