Professor Wrenn seems terrifying and super strict at first (and when you first look at his syllabus). He ended up bringing so much energy to the class that it quickly became one of my favorites. You do have to show up to learn how the poems are interpreted and specific things he wants you to take away. He's super accessible throughout the semester.
If I never see this man again, it will have been three months too soon. Wants to be Robin Williams from Dead Poet's Society so bad he forgets that this is a general education class and most students will gain nothing from memorizing the minutiae of dozens of poems. Grades are also harsh, which isn't really the problem but still worth avoiding.
Awful class. He makes this class so hard for a gen ed. lectures are sometimes interesting but not helpful on exams. The in class Writing assignments are also graded tough. Just don't take this class unless you love poetry.
Wrenn is a truly a great professor, however this class is WAY too hard for a gen-ed. He teaches this class like he would teach his Stanford classes. Strictly memorization and the writing assignments are graded super harshly. Tests are hard and even if you love poetry, you would still probably not do well in this class
Professor Wrenn is a very intelligent man being a Harvard grad, but he is very enthusiastic about poetry and wants to share his enthusiasm with his students. He does ask a lot of his students (work wise) but overall I enjoyed this class.
Wrenn's a great professor! If you approach poetry with an open mind you'll get some good stuff out of this class. Don't expect an easy A though. I think Wrenn has the mindset that students think its poetry and therefore subjective and easy. it's totally NOT like that. It's not something you can BS through. apply yourself, and youll get a good grade
Professor Wrenn has become one of my favorites!!! He really cares about poetry and he is HILARIOUS! This is a pretty tough class for a gen ed so if you need a GPA booster look else where. 3 writing assignments and 2 tests. Attendance is basically mandatory if you want to pass!!
So funny in class, makes class discussions enjoyable. There's assigned reading for every class but it was all really enjoyable and eye-opening. Wants you to think and engage your mind in thought and contemplate the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Great professor, would take again.
Wrenn is extremely passionate and smart. Attendance isn't mandatory but his tests are lecture based. The readings and class discussions were enjoyable. He has very high expectations and grades harshly. Your grade is based off two times writing assignments and two tests. The class itself was interesting but it definitely involved a lot of work.
Way too hard to be a gen ed. Tries to force his political opinions on you and if you disagree he will make you look stupid in front of the whole class. We were assigned way more reading than any other eng 221 class. If you want an easy A do not take this class.
Grades way to hard to be a gen ed. Unless you are an english major avoid this class at all cost if you want to keep a decent gpa.
Only 2 tests and if you don't memorize every sentence from every book for the tests forget about getting an A. Way harder than any of my friends eng221 class. Also wont let you into class even if you are 20 seconds late
Dr. Wren seems intimidating at first, but hes really an amazing and inspirational professor. I was not looking forward to taking an English class, but his Environmental Literature class is extremely interesting and I actually enjoyed going to his class. Especially if you are a science major, or anyone interested in nature TAKE THIS CLASS.
Awful gen ed. Wrenn is an awesome guy, I personally loved his stories, he really is one of the smartest and most experienced professors, but he should NOT be teaching a gen ed at the level he did. So much reading and only a few exams/papers which he graded so harshly on. It was one of the hardest classes I had ever taken, and it was ENGLISH!
Very funny dude, but easily one of the hardest classes i have ever taken, and its an english gened. He expects you to literally memorize everything for the tests and theres only two. He expects waaay too much and just assumes we know everything he does. Make sure to actually do the readings and take thorough notes since he doesnt use powerpoints
Literally do NOT take this class. This is the hardest gen ed I have ever taken and should not be a gen ed at all. Tests are so specific and even if you go to every single class and do every reading its still hard to get a good great. He cares way too much about this class and tries to make it super difficult.
I took his 221 class second semester my freshman year, his first semester teaching at JMU, and his lectures blew me away. If you're interested in literature and environmental issues and consider yourself a good enough writer, you will love this class and his lectures. If not, I would stay away.
makes a gen ed 100x more difficult than needed. my roommates were taking this class with other professors and got easy A's. do not take him for eng 221
very few grades and super tough grading on the timed essays- the class is honestly super interesting but it's tough to get a good grade. a TON of reading but the highlights are hit in class to help understanding of topics- the tests are like reading quizzes you can't just skim or know the general ideas because it asks for specifics
Greg is a dope professor. He is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and is sure to crack the entire class up, everyday. He's hilarious. The workload he assigns is manageable, because Greg empathizes with us hard-working college bums. He truly cares how each of his students is doing mentally and academically. Greg will teach you so much
very rude and talks down to people. makes a gen ed way more difficult than needed. assumes everyone is a poetry or english grader. one of my least favorite teachers at jmu
I LOVE PROFESSOR WRENN!!! Probably the funnest class I've taken. He's a remarkable professor and human, making everyone feel supported and valued. I never thought I'd be a good poetry writer, but this class made it my favorite form! Seriously, take him. He's amazing. He's hilarious. I have no earthly clue what the bad reviewers are talking about.
Wrenn is by far the most inspirational professor I've had. He is incredibly intimidating and expects a lot from his students; however, he will push you to do your very best and will work WITH you if he sees your passionate drive. Go to class- you will appreciate it & learn more than you think! Weekly notebook entries, 3 essays, and reading quizzes!
Greg is funny, caring, intuitive, and extremely intelligent. He always knows how to make you laugh and encourages mind-blowing class discussion. However, his expectations are extremely high. He would change up his syllabus several times and often would change his answer about what he expected on an assignment. Just put in the effort, you'll be fine
Ive taken 3 classes with Wrenn (1 survey and 2 creative writing) over the past 2 years and can say that working with him and learning from him has been a wonderful experience. Wrenn cares deeply about the subjects that he teaches and if youre willing to put in a little effort, you will learn a great deal about English, writing, and life.
Professor Wrenn is so bomb I can't handle it. Take the class. My poetry writing skyrocketed due to his feedback and the awesome writing community that we created as a class. ENG392 was a place you could let your guard down and talk about anything, openly and lovingly
Wrenn is a gem. He's so passionate about poetry and poetry writing, and he just wants to pass that love on to his students. Took this class as an elective & I would do it again in a heartbeat! The class is all about writing lyric poetry, so he takes the HW assignment of writing poetry very seriously. He's one of the best professors at JMU!
Professor Wrenn is one of the best professors Ive had in my time at JMU. The creative writing-poetry class is one that will not only change your perspective on poetry as a genre but will also change your perspective on yourself. Youre forced to share a lot in class, but for good reason. Final is 50% of your grade so be wary.
He's pretty strict on grading and reading but he makes the class interesting and shows he really cares about the topics.
Prof. Wrenn is a great guy BUT environmental literature is the most unnecessarily difficult gen ed ever. There are multiple readings due EVERY CLASS! He says the test's are not "gotcha" exams but they so are. He also NEVER replies to emails which is very annoying because the assignments are so unclear. This is most definitely a SCIENCE CLASS!!
The midterm and final were not regular tests, they were very specific like fill in the blank quotes and if this author was alive what would they want etc. Additionally, there were only five grades, 2 tests and 3 papers on lockdown. He had a GA who graded the papers and he was kind of annoying and said the same thing to everyone. Wouldn't recommend.
Wren tells you exactly what you should & shouldn't believe. Don't believe in global warming? Don't take it, you won't pass. Don't want to read for 2 hours every night? Don't take it, you won't pass. Lectures are funny- but the class is laughing at him not with him. If you can memorize every line of the 50 some pieces you read- won't pass the final.
He is a cool guy but if you dont believe in climate change STAY AWAY! there are only 2 tests and 3/4 writing assignments which are graded very hard. You HAVE to read every single night
Told a lot of cheesy jokes. Interesting class but he took it way too seriously. Says exams (2) are not gotchas, they are. Long readings for hw. 3 timed essays on lockdown browser that were stressful and couldn't be prepared for. I did ok bc I studied and active read. He is hard, but others weren't willing to do readings or come to class & failed
I took ENG 222, Professor Wrenn's lyrical poetry class over the summer. The class was split into two parts, twice a week discussion posts along with two quizes a week. It was all relatively easy, as long as you do the posts and the quizes you will get a B in his class if not higher. He is really nice and just loves poetry alot. Would reccomend.
Overall great Professor! He truly cares about each and every one of his students and provides amazing feedback so that you know exactly what to improve on. He is very helpful and easy to reach for any help you may need. He is an absolute sweetheart and I would take him over and over again if I could
Great professor, better than what i expected. I would recommend taking for gen ed requirements. I am not the biggest fan of poetry but it was not super difficult to get through this course. Great online structure as well.
Professor Wrenn was awesome! I took an online class, so I don't have much to say about attendance, or even much to say about interaction with him. However, he helped so much with getting through a textbook-heavy course. Also, a few of his responses to our assignment submissions were kind of hilarious.
No grading rubric, but still gives out mediocre grades on discussion posts. Each chapter was a long list of confusing poems to read and then write an essay about. His closeup video lectures were unnecessarily long and unclear. Any spaced-out hippie that likes to hear himself talk can run this class. Terrible experience. Did not learn anything real
Loved taking this class with professor Wrenn. Super manageable and made the modules easy to understand and prepare for. If you take it online do note that he unlocks the modules as the weeks progress so you can't skip very far ahead.
I took this class online, and absolutely loved it. Professor Wrenn is a true gem and is passionate about what he does. He's extremely knowledgable which can be intimidating, but he is more than happy to work with his students to help you become a better writer. This class helped me allow small details to tell a larger story! Take him if you can!
I had professor Wrenn one of his first semesters teaching at JMU. His class was an absolute game-changer for me, it's so eye-opening and enjoyable. We used a course pack from the bookstore for the textbook. Can not recommend this class and professor enough, I am planning on taking another class with him (hopefully) before I graduate.
He is by far my favorite professor and he truly cares about his students. He makes grading criteria very clear and wants to help anyone who comes to him for help. He is hilarious and can inspire great creativity.
Professor Wrenn is awesome. I loved his class so so much. He is a great professor and a great poet/prose creator. He is extremely empathetic and understanding. He is honest about your work and participation and his main goal is to help you succeed in any way he can.
He is seriously funny and a lot to love
Professor Wrenn was an absolute treat to learn from during my first semester at JMU. Our Zoom lectures were always fun, engaging, and informative. English 293 is a breeze if you follow all of the directions given to you, read all of the poems/readings assigned, and listen to his feedback. He definitely helped me grow as a writer and poet!
Ok I love professor Wrenn. He is so funny and sweet. I truly enjoyed learning poetry from him, and he has great advice. The class is very therapeutic esp if u like to do creative writing. I will be taking him again!!
One of the kindest professors at JMU. He truly cares about his students and their well-being and gives a lot of helpful feedback to improve writing. Hes hilarious and, his lectures were always so engaging and informative. Very passionate about what he does, and definitely helped me grow as a writer. Take him if you can!
Professor Wrenn is an amazing professor, and enjoys sparking the creativity inside an individual. He is very easy going and easy to talk to, which I feel like is hard to come by with a lot of professors. He is very honest, and it is clear he simply wants the most success out of all his students.
Professor Wrenn was an absolute delight to have for Eng 392. I took this class because I needed some more credits to graduate, didn't want to stress myself out taking something incredibly hard, and was interested in creative writing. Wrenn is passionate about English, and didn't make his class any more challenging then it needed to be. He is great!
A wonderful teacher! Very happy to have taken a course with him and would love to do so again in the future. Very knowledgeable in his work and very caring of the students that he teaches. Always willing to help outside of class.
Delightful & inspiring. Can't recommend this class enough to anyone, everyone. Prof. Wrenn clearly communicated what was expected to receive a fair grade & how to find your voice. He's hilarious in class & gives brilliant feedback. Go to office hours! It was online w/ poems/discussions graded on completion & a few reading quizzes+final portfolio.
Was one of my favorite professors and I'm glad I got to take him for class another time.
Prof Wrenn is one of my favorite profs I've had. This man and his class were sometimes the only thing to make me smile during a long week. He is an excellent prof and gives really great feedback on your work, which really helps you to improve. He is so funny and has great energy. Loved this class!
Most underrated professor at JMU. Took lyric po for gen ed, best class ive ever had and it's all because of him. So funny, so nice, and truly cares about his students + asks how they're doing. 2 quizzes each week only 5 questions and EXTREMELY easy. 3 papers that aren't bad and he drop 3 lowest quiz grades! He's an actual ray of sunshine, easy A.
Professor Wrenn is one of the best. He is incredibly kind and supportive of your writing and provides good feedback on how to improve. The readings were always thought provoking, but be ready to discuss. I honestly enjoyed the discussion as it was good conversation about issues facing our environment. 2 papers, flexible topics, fun to explore!
I love love love this professor. So inspiring and made me really wanna participate!
I took Prof. Wrenns class on a whim and it ended up being my favorite all semester! I didnt realize how interesting poetry could be but he made me consider switching majors (from business to English). Prof. Wrenn and Ms. Swartzenzuber are both inspiring teachers that I couldnt recommend more. Wish I couldve taken the class in person! 10/10
I love him so much . This turned out to be my favorite class during the semester. 10/10 reason why i believe i can be an english teacher . He was so the best . helps you out and gives great feedback. If you mess up he will give you a second chance . He made me want to participate in the class not for my grade but just because he was caring .
Honestly one of my favorite professors I have taken at JMU. A really amazing man who cares so much about his students and their mental health more than anything else. He will check up an you if he feels he needs to, and is always there to talk. Made me love the class and genuinely care more about writing and the environment. Take him.
I can never say enough good things about Professor Wrenn. He is the kindest, sweetest, funniest, most considerate caring professor that I have ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and learned so much. He is also extremely inspirational and will give very helpful feedback to improve your writing. Take if you can! Such a gem of a person and prof
The material and course layout was manageable. There were mini quizzes every class on readings and 3/4 writing assignments. The material was very enjoyable and relevant. Class is not mandatory, but participation is a big portion of your grade. Professor Wrenn really cares and does not want you to fail, and I would recommend taking this class.
I was a part of Greg's first memoir writing workshop and it is the best class that I have taken at JMU. He had a great curriculum planned for the semester and fostered such a welcoming environment. I felt that the class truly became friends throughout the semester. I wish that I could take more classes with him.
When I first signed up for this class I was extremely nervous about what I was getting myself into. I have no intention of becoming a published author, but I loved this class. The care Professor Wrenn has for each student is amazing. I felt listened to and I felt cared for. This class pushes you to think outside of the common memoir.
Professor Wrenn really cares about his students and made my education seem worthwhile. I wish I could've taken more of his classes.
professor Wrenn is fine, but he is exactly how you would imagine a typical poetry writing professor to behave. incredibly eccentric and outgoing in the way he talks, overanalyzing the simplest things. it's an easy class but definitely an annoying one to attend especially on days where i was not in the mood for him. mandatory attendance
I had Professor Wrenn for three nonfic creative writing classes, and from the very first day on, he wore his heart on the outside and the only real requirement for his students is that they do the same. He created space for us to explore/express our inner self, giving everyone his fullest attention, assuring us we all have juicy stories to tell.
Professor Wrenn is the most hilarious professor at JMU. He gives you a few "free absences" but I did not use any of them cause I always wanted to to go to his class. He gives amazing feedback and his office hours are so so helpful. The majority of this class was talking to each other about poetry and you learn SO MUCH. TAKE HIS CLASS.
I love Prof. Wrenn. He is really funny and while class is not required, I genuinely love going. The exams are based on readings and content from class. There were questions about slides you could only see in class. There is lots of reading but he explains them throughly in class the next day so you will do fine. The paper graders were hard though
I just think this class was a little over the top for a gen ed. There was so much reading for homework. Tests were a little unreasonable with questions about which meme was shown in class. Timed writings were graded harshly as though you had a week to write it, but in reality, you had like 50 minutes. Content of the readings is very specific.
Prof Wrenn makes some things political and there was so much reading. His lectures don't always make sense and they usually are pretty boring.
He is an amazing person, but the class is extremely hard. Readings before every class that we had to take notes on because there are timed writing assignments where we needed to quote the readings. 3 times writing assignments, midterm, and final make up our grade. Super work heavy, but Prof Wrenn is very funny and his lectures are interesting.
Professor Wren had great lectures during class, but they sometimes became repetitive and made it hard to pay attention. There were only three assignments all semester, a midterm, and a final. The only complaint I have is that he has a timed essay due the class before the midterm and another essay due the day before finals and they're graded tough.
Great, knowledgable professor and interesting topics for class! pretty reading heavy but i genuinely enjoyed most of the readings, we watched a few movies too. Only gripe with this class is it's only 5 grades, 3 timed essays, midterm and final, so not much room for error. tests weren't bad if you went to lecture and essays were graded fairly imo.
He's a genuinely good guy, but I personally think he asked a lot of a gen ed course. Lots of reading, which was interesting, but test questions got too specific for the amount of different titles we had to engage with (27??). An A is definitely attainable, but it'll require some commitment. He's also a funny dude but somewhat of an acquired taste.
His class isn't necessary difficult but it is a lot of reading for a gen ed course in my opinion. Only have 2 tests and then 3 timed writing assignments and 2 discussion boards. He doesn't require attendance but if you want the important info, you have to go as he doesn't post his lectures or materials online
Professor Wrenn was AWESOME!! He always wanted to make sure his students were engaged and knew every single students name which I think shows a lot about a professor. He was hilarious and made class fun and exciting. Be prepared to read before every single class. There were about 3 timed writing assignments but he prepares you very well for them.
FAR too much reading for a Gen Ed!!! You are only graded on 2 discussion posts, 3 timed essays, midterm, and final. Can get away with not doing every reading but pretty easy if you read everything and attend every class. Arrogant guy, test questions based on random pictures he shows in class, just an overall annoying course.
Wrenn was an amazing lecturer and made the topics discussed very interesting. Much of the class is spent discussing topics with the people around you. Even though there are a lot of readings, as long as you attend the lectures and take notes it isn't necessary to read everything. As long as you study hard for the midterm and final you will be fine
A lot of reading for a gen ed. Outside of that you're graded on not too many things: 3 writing assignments, 2 discussions, a midterm, and a final. Attendence itself wasn't mandatory but without going to class exams would be a lot tougher. Class wasn't too hard though and lectures were intriguing. Solid option and nice guy during office hours
So frustrating how much there is to read for a gen ed. I felt the test questions were super random and based on random things said in class and not as much on the literature. I didn't enjoy this course.
LOTS OF READING. LOTS OF EXTRA BOOK YOU HAVE TO BUY. You will read about a book a week. Attendance is not required but if you don't go and take notes you will fail. Writings are graded by a separate prof. You are graded on like 4 assignments so you have no chance to do bad on any of them. Over all not too hard.
Big lecture class but completely discussion so come in ready to talk. Get all books ahead of time, tests are kinda random questions to prove you were in class. Questions why women would want to leave America in a time of political unrest but then talks about wanting to be taken by aliens all the time. Fine teacher but gripe with him personally.
Great Professor, Very reading-heavy for a gen-ed but lots of extra credit opportunities. Professor wrenn is very caring and as long as you do the readings (which is a lot) you are almost guaranteed an A. It was a delight being in his class and one of the only professors I was sad to leave. If you can find an opening TAKE IT.
DON'T TAKE- unless you want to read a book a week, trust me it's not worth it. I had an A+ somehow until finals week but the way the class is set up my grade somehow managed to tank like 12 points in 3 days since you are only graded on like 5 things total. I have had many friends in other sections that had way better experiences.
A bit of an oddball but is very passionate about what he teaches. Be prepared to read A LOT; there were multiple articles weekly and 6 or 7 books for the whole semester. Only graded on 1 reflection, 2 exams, and 3 TIMED essays. Decently easy class; just a lot of stuff on the exams are things he discussed in class.
Get ready to read a lot with many articles, books, and a couple of movies. Almost no homework assignments, which sounds great, but you are only graded on midterm, final, and three-timed writing assignments. If you do badly on the midterm, you pretty much have to end up withdrawing from the class because it's that hard to get your grade back.
He is an odd guy but cares a lot about the environment, so if you think of the world in a spiritual way, take this, but if not, it's hard to get into. The tests are based on all these readings (twice a week) plus five books and two or three movies, which can be CONSUMING. I wouldn't recommend it for an "easy gen ed"!!
i had mixed feelings... as a person, prof. wrenn was so sweet and really cared about this students. however, the class itself was just so BORING. the classes were too lecture-heavy imo. if i could give you any advice it would be to DO THE READINGS because there's a lot of discussion in class & he will come up to you and ask for your opinion.
Prof Wrenn was ok, it was obvious he cared but nobody else did because the class was so boring and hard to sit through. Assignments and tests required the readings though so definitely do the readings. He comes up to people and asks their opinions during class...
Pretty tough for a Gen Ed. Only graded on 3 timed writings, one reflection, and a midterm and a final. Attendance wasn't required but you're kinda screwed on the midterm and final if you don't show up to class.
Professor Wrenn was an okay professor for this class; I do think it was hard for gen ed. The class is graded on reflections, which is graded easily, but then the written timed class assignments are very harsh. Attendance isn't required, but if you don't do the readings, you will struggle.
I LOVE GREG WRENN! content really changed my perspective on the world and prof wrenn is so passionate you cant help but listen to him. there is a lot of reading but duh it's an english class. the books were really interesting. tests and writing grades rely on knowing the details of the readings so you do genuinely have to do with work. take him!!!
I loved this class! I have no idea how he doesn't have a 5 star rating.
What an icon.
Wrenn is one of the best professors I have ever had. He really cares and values your opinions and thoughts. I learned a lot and would take again..
I struggled with this class but to be fair I did not know it was a poetry class.
Online version is 10/10 the only annoying thing is daily quizzes that have to be taken in the first five minutes of class
Do not take this class if you don't like poetry. On the final he's asking if his dog was on a certain zoom, completely unfair petty way of creating test questions. I didn't know my essays would be graded by someone other than him, and only received an A on my last essay even though they all pretty much had same grade level content.
I don't know why everyone is giving this professor bad ratings. Clearly didn't understand the material and didn't do the coursework. This class is lecture based and as long as you listened to the lectures, took NOTES, did the work, you will get a good grade. The professor is very passionate and here to help.
Honestly one of the best lecturers I have ever had. He is extremely engaged with the material, and that energy makes a difference in class. If you are taking it as a gen ed, the readings can feel dry at times, but an A is achievable. If you pay attention in class, take notes, and write based on what he talks about, you will be in a very good spot.
