Made a simplistic and conceptual class unnecessarily difficult. His slides are extremely unorganized and consistantly filled with errors. Dropped the class in hopes that UCF has a better professor that can teach, rather than read from broken ppt slides, which btw do not help prepare you for his test.
I really wasn't all that psyched about this class but he changed that. He's so enthusiastic about ecology that now I'm more interested too. Sadly he only taught the 1st 1/2 of the semester but the new prof seems good too. I am definitely gonna take another class from him.
prof. klowden is awesome, i took him for bio 2 and ecology. i did not do as well with bio 2, but i did amazing in ecology. his slides tell you everything, you just need to understant them. which you get if you go to class. i also read the textbook, which will aslo help alot. time consuming, but you learn a huge amount. HE IS VERY HELPFUL!
Its SUPPOSED to be an easy 3 credit class. Since i took this class in high school i figured it would give me a boost in the class. WELL I THOUGHT WRONG! I honestly think a calculus test is easier than his tests. I dropped and I am praying another professor begins teaching it. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA!!
This class was harder than my organic chem. Test are so ridiculous hard. All about tricky, so unfair. Some test he cuts class short on test day so you only have 45 mins. Fighting for a b, and I have a 4.0 science GPA. RUN!!!!!!
I really enjoyed him as a teacher and am definitely taking another one of his classes next semester. Great teacher! He's very passionate about the subject and has links on some of his slides of research papers he found interesting. Definitely read the book. The class is not hard, but also not an easy A. :)
I really enjoyed this class and teacher. He is really nice, funny, & knowledgeable. He is active while teaching and open to speaking after. I did well on all my tests and didn't stray much from the notes, tho i really like bio. The ppts are easy to follow. I would jump at the chance to have him again. I hope he doesn't lose his love for teaching.
Klowden knows what he is talking about. I highly recommend this class if you are taking Bio 2. he is passionate about biology and is seems excited about teaching the class. very informative but demanding 4 credit class. be ready to commit many hours to studying his slides, reading chapters, and making your own vocabulary if you want and A!
Dr. K is awesome. I had him for Bio and jumped at the chance to have him for Ecology. He gave great notes for Bio and really clear slides for Ecology. He's really funny and seems to love teaching. He spent tons of time with me in office hours and talking after class. I can't wait for his Tropical Ecology class next semester!
Dr. K is a really great professor. He is easy to understand and makes Ecology interesting. He also does a great job explaining and clarifying concepts. This class is pretty time intensive. I recommend reading the chapters, attending lecture and setting aside enough time in advance to study for exams.
Klowden really knows Bio and seems to enjoy it. He's a nice guy and has an odd sense of humor. However, his tests are ridiculously hard. He has curved at least 15 points each test just to bring the average up to a C. I recommend staying away from his Bio2 class if you want to get an A.
Dr. K was the best prof I've had in 2 years. Finally someone who doesn't dumb it down. His lectures are info packed but he gives you all the notes. Come to class, take a few notes and study and you'll get a good grade and will learn a lot. True he's not for slackers but that's what makes him great. I can't wait for his Ecology class in the Fall!
So interesting! His lectures are packed with information and excellent examples to follow. Listen to everything he says and read what he tells you to mandatory and you'll do great!
Teaches for the first half of the semester. Uses powerpoints, but is sure to elaborate on each one. Tests are fair.
Wow his Powerpoints are awesome and he really explains things well in class. Those who do bad must not show up. He was also really easy to talk to and helpful in office hours. I learned sooooo much!
Dr. Klowden was passionate about the subject he taught. Lecture notes were very well organized and he definitely emphasized the important points of the material in his lectures. On his exams he had high expectations for course content and studies gone through in class. His questions on quizzes and tests were clear. My favorite class this semester!
Horrible class!!! nothing that you study will be on test, ridicuosly amounts of info to learn for the test, cummulative final not optional, he can talk a lot and test extremly hard
I'm loving this class so far. His lectures and notes are crystal clear. And he really spent a lot of time with me in office hours. Definitely is not easy but that's ok I'm learning a ton. Sadly he only teaches 1/2 the semester. I hope the next prof is as good!
Ecology is a very interesting topic; however, this professor tries to make this class as complex and hard as he can. His tests are ridiculous and instead of enjoying the class I'm hating it. I once read that "Educators take something simple and make it complicated. Communicators take something complicated and make it simple" Holds true for Dr.K
He made this challenging class so much easier, his notes are extremely useful and his lectures are very entertaining. The book is confusing but if you study his lecture notes you are golden for the exam. The guy who commented below me needs to reverse his quote!
Ecology could be a very straight forward class, however Dr. Klowden makes this class so much more complicated then it should be. KNOW the examples in the text, because he tests on very specific parts of the examples. Along with the quizzes every week, this class requires a lot of your time, studying, and PATIENCE. Good luck is all I have to say!
Horrible!!! his powerpoints are somewhat clear but they are not helpful to study for the exam. You must memorize EVERYTHING from the textbook, the examples on the text are CRITICAL for the exam. This class reuqired me more time study than my Organic Chemistry! my advice: DON'T take him unless you can dedicate most of your time to this class.
Klowden sucks. He made Ecology which would be a generally straight forward class into time consuming example memorization. The quizzes focus on minute details, be prepared - read the chp before hand. He gives pop quizzes as well. His exams are comprised of putting as many Q's while enjoying everyone frantically try and finish. Very time consuming!
Yes, he's hard and you have to study. If you study correctly, it's not so bad. It's an upper level science course, get over it. You have to put in the effort to get the grade. Pop quizzes were elementary level. People are over exaggerating.
He is super helpful and truly wants to see you succeed, unlike his counterpart Von Holle. I wish it was just him teaching this course and not a tandem scenario involving two professors.
Took him for Ecology. REALLY nice, very enthusiastic about course material; made class enjoyable and interesting. READ READ READ the material!! Stay on top of the reading and quizzes, and an A is obtainable. The material isn't hard; the sheer amount of material is what makes it challenging. Offers quizzes and extra credit. GOOD quality!!
A total wanker! The concepts that we cover in ecology are SIMPLE, but he loves to make it as hard as possible by testing on nitpickey ideas that have no basis in the text. Also, when he speaks, he will use the filler word "alright" ad nausea. I counted over 100x in a single hour of lecture. He should quit teaching and stick to gecko research.
Had Dr.Klowden for 2nd half of semester. tests are very detail oriented, but centered on the notes like he says they will be. he encourages students to come to office hours, so he does care about his students.friendly and approachable. you will have to study a lot to do well, but it's college and it's UCF so don't expect easy.
Klowden is a really great teacher, the math portion of Ecology is hard. But he tells you exactly what you need to do in order to pass the class. If you can't pass this class then there's no way you're going to graduate. This is a 3000 level course so it's difficult but GO TO CLASS and you'll be fine. Make sure to know the studies from the text.
Not a hard class. Go to lecture...pop quizzes are easy. For the online quizzes read the chapter right before taking it. For the exams study the notes. For the final exam study hard because he does not let up...it's as detailed as a regular exam.
He tells you what to study for on the lecture notes read the book cause he'll pull very detailed questions from book examples. Lot of reading!!
Klowden's Bio2 course was awesome! His enthusiasm is contagious and his power points were great. His exams were difficult but he curves! He is always willing to help you with questions after class or during office hours(lots of office hours). Only complaint.. he kept us past time frequently :/
He is a good teacher, but I have struggled in this class the entire semester. Cant seem to get his rhythm for questions. Seems like you have to memorize everything in the book for the exam. Uses power points and lectures the entire time - always past end time too.
His tests are very hard, too many small details from the book that are not in his lectures.Does not give pre-exam review so it is hard to know what type of questions he will ask. 2nd time taking him and he always has to curve the exams. Gets stuck and contradicts himself on his own lectures, so hard tounderstand sometimes. not taking him again.NO!
He is a good guy but his tests are really hard and detailed, MEMORIZE THE LECTURES AND THE BOOK!, he expects you to know them by heart. His teaching is a bit confusing at times. He incorporated q's from BioII on the first test and cought me off guard bc I took Bio II last year. Does not like to give reviews so STUDY EVERY WORD. Goes over time a lot
I took him for ecology two times now, both times i got a D+ (68/69) and he will not boost u up. Anyhow, his test are ridiculous, you gotta know every little detail in the book from the examples and his lectures. He doesn't tell you what to study. He acts like everyone is going to be an ecology major. He has constant pauses and doesnt know what say
He told us which examples to look at in the book before the test, so all you had to do (aside from understand the general concepts) is make sure you read through and understood those specific case studies. He is super friendly in office hours and is very helpful if you come see him. His passion for the subject is refreshing.
I am currently taking Klowden. 1st half he teaches. 1st test, 64. True, I slacked. 2nd test, studied 6 days straight, 73.53%. Exam part 1 MC 25/40. Exam part 2 Math portion 13/16. SA 2/2. I read every chapter, outlined it, took notes, went to class, and still did bad. My friend got an 84% by a difference of guessing on 2 MC. Don't Take.
His tests are indeed challenging though his lectures and slides do detail on what he wants you to know well. You can't just read the books and take notes, you have to discuss the concepts and apply them well. He's very animated and keeps the class interesting. He's very accommodating with office hours, able to help.
Looks like that guy from the show QI, but much smarter.
Do not take. Takes exact sentences out of book and puts them next to other answers that are all correct but you have to choose the MOST correct answer (laziness). amount of effort you put in > grade you receive. Not worth the hassle, take it over the summer if you care about your GPA.
Avoid taking him! His tests can be hard because they are mostly fill in the blank. You have to know the material. You will come to hate him by the end. He has a group project that is a pain. He seems nice in class and the office but not so much when he grades. He is very picky with the group projects, he has standards that are not logical!!
He is a really good professor. He explains everything clearly but expects you to do some learning on your own. You have to OWN the material covered. The tests are VERY difficult but not impossible. I got an A in the class with a LOT of work. Read the book, know it and know the lectures. I learned a lot which is definitely a good thing!
Teaches 2nd 1/2. His lectures are pretty good and it was very helpful to attend class. Dont just memorize his notes, understand them b/c his tests are crazy! Easy to make a mistake on things you know because his exams are detailed and applicable. Do well in lab, it's worth more than a single exam. I received and an A. Just put in the work!
Love love love Dr. K. Best prof I ever had. Lectures packed full of info and so so interesting.
He is a really tricky teacher. he tests on concepts that seem unimportant during lectures. I would avoid taking him if you can. The class is unnecessarily hard. He does not use the book at all and it was a huge waste of money.
Klowdens difficult but not impossible. He likes to test on examples youre supposed to read in the book so just read, paraphrase and review. Also he LOVES to take 2 very similar concepts that have 1 differentiating detail and test you on that so understand differences b/t close concepts and book examples he tells you to read and youll do just fine.
He makes the class harder then it needs to be. Show up to class for the clicker questions, study the book details that correspond to his lecture and his powerpoints and it won't be too bad.
So far he's a great teacher. Has really turned me on to subjects I diodn't think were interesting. Really good about answering questions in class and in office hours. Had the 1st exam today and thought it was pretty straight forward. He was really clear about what would be on the exam and he didn't lie. Can't wait for the rest of the semester.
Talkative, goes over 1 hour time-frame and tests are ridiculously hard. I studied and outlined the chapters and still did poorly. There are 3 Tests and a final. Tests cover 7-9 chapters and are worded in a complex manner. Attendance is mandatory. I wouldn’t recommend this class to my worst enemy. Save your money and take another professor.
Dr. Klowden is a GREAT INDIVIDUAL. BUT, a HORRIBLE test giver! His exams are WAY to hard. He also does not do any drops. Better be good at lab if you want a good grade. Got a B in lecture and A in lab so my grade came out fine. Makes you memorize 600 flashcards and tests you on the tiniest details to make sure you understand. Good luck!
Worst class ever!! Do not take him! All he does is reads the slides and goes way too fast! Everybody fails his tests! Bad teacher! Don't take him!
Avoid if you can. Tests require memorized facts. Prof skips through important slides when class time runs out and does not explain concepts well. Lab assignment questions often vague. Attendance mandatory. If unfamiliar with other Bio classes, copious note taking may be necessary. Recording the lectures is recommended. 1 exam had a class avg of 55.
HORRIBLE CLASS!!! Avoid! save your sanity!
Best teacher I have had at UCF. Anyone who is doing poorly must not study enough. He does expect a lot but is crystal clear about what will be on the test. For such a big class he takes a lot of time in office hours to help me understand some tricky things. Can't wait for Ecology next semester!
What an amazing class! I thought bio was alright in high school but Dr. K has shown me so many cool new things. Definitely a bio major now!
For such hard material Klowden makes it really understandable. He even took time to teach me better ways to study. Not sure why others think his tests are so hard. He's really pretty straight forward. I'll definitely take any class he teaches.
If you want to learn, this is the guy to take. Other teachers usually dumb it down for all the idiots in the class but not Klowden. He is really giving me a great understanding and appreciation for biology. Thanks for going the extra distance Dr. Klowden!
Class is harder than it needs to be. Disconnected chapters, Powerpoints never uploaded prior to class. Exams almost exclusively short answer (with 2week turn around time). Abundant partial credit but strange question selection. Irritating group "proposal" project required (~20% of course grade)that drags the length of the class.
Nice guy. Lectures are interesting. Tests are a bit tricky. Not as bad as a Dr. White exam... More like the cousin of a Dr. White exam.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! He goes way to fast and crams to many chapters into one test. He always goes over class time, so if you have a class after his you WILL be late. His final is cumulative over almost 30 chapters and he gives no type of study aid. SAVE YOUR GPA AND DONT TAKW HIS CLASS!!
Probably the worst teacher UCF has to offer. If you want a fair class dont take Klowden. He clams 9 chapters into test and wants explicit detail know. All he does is read from his slides which we can do at home ourselves. He also skips important slides so he can cram as much into lecture as possible and ALWAYS makes you stay late. WORST TEACHER
What a great class. Unlike most of my teachers he actually cares that I learn. Lectures are really clear. Clicker questions are fun and helpful. Stays after class to answer my questions. Wish all my teachers were like him!
I'm a senior and have taken a lot of pretty bad classes. What a change to get to this one. Klowden gives the most energetic and interesting lectures I have had at UCF. Most of my other teachers just try to get through the semester. Klowden makes sure every minute counts. Stays the whole class period, never cancels class. Never learned so much.
I took Dr. Klowden for Bio 2. His tests are detailed but fair. Attendance and online quizzes are 8% of your grade. He seems to really care about his students and want to make the material interesting. He'll also literally tell you right in his PowerPoints what you need to know on tests. Recommend.
Great professor, very interesting, knows his stuff. You will have to legitimately study the materia to do well on the exams(he curves the class average to 70). Asks tricky and detail-oriented questions. Book isn't necessary, and I didn't get it. All of his material is on the slides.
He is fair and knows his stuff. He does go over alot of material and will hold you late. He's a good professor, the book isn't necessary, and if you're a bio (or relevant) major, I'd suggest him. If you are a different stem field, may want to go elsewhere. This class will require ALOT of studying.
Tropical Ecology and Conserv.: Definitely a professor that wants you to be knowledgeable and spends energy into his slides and lectures. Interesting material plus he has the class do a research proposal that really demands intricate reading and practice for a presentation. Great class taught by a wonderful and down to earth guy.
Pretty terrible. Makes lectures mandatory but miserable. Tests don't follow the material in the textbook so you have to pick up on random minor details in lecture. Makes Gen Bio seem more like a 3/4000 level course
Gives good study tips, still using some techniques in other classes. Nice change of pace from professors who only seem to care about their research-- breathes life into the material and is a personable lecturer
He's a magnificent instructor that is passionate to share his knowledge about ecology and his travels. He's very easy going but strict in thought and will call you out on misinformed points. Had 4 tests, written responses mostly and one research proposal in group. Very hard work but worth it. If you love ecology, this is the class to take.
Not an easy A by any means, but he knows his stuff and class isn't boring. You will need an I<Clicker2 for the class. Weekly online quiz, 4 tests. Some extra credit available. Ecology is complex so you will have to study.
Dr. Klowden is very helpful and really cares for his students. This was a very hard class, so study! Please go to his office hours since he is very helpful.
Great professor. His enthusiasm makes lecture interesting and he is super fun during outdoor lab. Tests are straight-forward; you always know what he is asking for.
Mostly studied off powerpoints and read the book only to review some stuff I didn't understand. STUDY STUDY STUDY! The exams range from 7-8 chapters long and it's a lot of information, but he makes it easy to understand. He has good study tips, and gives extra points for clicker questions
The class is based on a couple tests, a final, quizzes, participation and lab. Clicker questions serve as participation as well as extra credit. I found this class to very interesting and Dr. Klowden to be a great guy! I found that his lectures are interesting and sometimes funny. The tests cover A LOT of material (7-8 ch.) so start studying early!
Lectures are awesome and fun! His lecture notes are very detailed and he posts them online. He says you need to know everything in "extreme detail." This is true. If you don't take time to study and REALLY know the material, the tests will be hard. But if you study the lecture notes and follow his study advice, the tests are easy. Seriously.
There is so much information in his Bio 2 class, so his lectures are loaded. He's good at hitting specific info though, so attend class! His quizzes and labs prep you for the exams, but study and read or don't expect a great grade. He's tough but good, wouldn't have taken Bio 2 with anyone else.
His PowerPoints are LONG, the final is cumulative and covers an insane amount of detailed info (like all the tests), and he does iClikers almost every class for attendance. If you ask him a question in class, he most likely won't know the answer. He's only rehearsed on the lectures. If you study A LOT, you can manage to get a decentgood grade.
Do NOT take this professor . Bio 2 is a course with a lot of information , that takes a lot of studying and memorization , however his tests are not straightforward WHATSOEVER . 3 tests , 7 chapters each in EXTREME detail and a 30 chapter final that is absolutely ridiculous. Reads straight from power points and has clicker questions. DONT TAKE THIS
Klowden is love, Klowden is life! Very passionate and dedicated instructor who really knows his material. Offers thoughtful answers to questions and is helpful during office hours. Exams are detailed and difficult but making notecards and studying in advance goes a long way. iClicker questions for attendance but also uses them for extra credit.
I took him for Bio2 in the fall and finished out with a B+. I can see getting an A being very doable, but you'll need to be prepared for exams with tricky very specific questions. I don't remember him testing on anything that was not on his PowerPoint presentations so that gives a pretty clear idea of what you should be studying.
His tests were obnoxiously hard. Don't bother learning general terms or the concept, make sure that you have the fine details down.
I absolutely love Klowden. I've taken 3 classes with him already, and I'm taking another next semester. He is quirky and funny. His lectures are really long, but the material is interesting, and the exams are really easy. Just look over the notes, you'll be fine. Mostly free response exams. You will also have to do a group proposal, but it's fun.
You can tell he likes the subject and is very helpful. Don't really need the textbook (only to clear up some ideas you have trouble with). Memorizelearn everything in the powerpoints. Study days in advance!!! There is a lot of information on each test and his tests can be very specific. If you study a little every day, this class is a breeze!
Although his lectures aren't boring, however his tests is beyond hard!! Plus its 7-8 chapters per exam! Its so overwhelming. I feel like its tricky and super detailed questions, not straight forward from the powerpoints. Class is mandatory to get participation points & extra credit is only 1-3%. I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
He is a super nice guy & very knowledgeable. Exams are short answer fill in the blank. Know the powerpoints, like the back of your hand. Need to interpret graph data that was discussed & explain. last minute studying is not going to work. There's a semester long group project, be prepared to dedicate lots of out of class time to.
One of the toughest classes I've taken, but he tells you that when you walk in. He is super helpful in answering questions and making himself available with office hours. There is a lot of info you'll need to know, but he has power points that you can print & he goes over them during class. You'll have to work for your grade, but I learned a lot
Funny and interesting lectures, however, his exams are extremely difficult (each exam covers at least 5 chapters) and he will try to trick you! The exams are worth 92% of your final grade and they are from his ppts which are pretty bad (mostly pictures). The online quizzes are only worth 4% and they are directly from the textbook. Don't take him!
Great professor. Tests were tough. Didn't seem to the point. He really makes you think. But he is a very helpful guy.
Klowden's a great proffesor. He knows his stuff cold and and is eager to answer any questions you may have. His lectures are interesting and humorous, and he answers questions thoroughly. Absolutely would take his class again.
Dr. Klowden is a great professor, and as others have said, he really knows what he is talking about. In the class I took, he posted lectures online so attendance wasn't extremely mandatory, but he makes lecture kind of funny/interesting. With that said, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HIM, his exams are extremely in depth and make you really think.
Tests are also very tough just like Dr. Doan. They split the semester so 2 tests come from each professor. He is actually very funny as well but alst be ready for alot of material and to study the power point info
Ok. To get an A in this class. Study powerpoints and lab handouts for test, go to class( for clicker qs), and do well in lab. If you have the book looking over the diagrams is helpful. If you are taking this class for Med school, I found the book helpful in studying for MCAT, if you aren't there is no need to buy the book.
Tests covered a lot of material. This class was co-taught. A lot of students thought that he was the better lecturer but I found him to be slow and disorganized. Very nice though. I thought his tests were more straight forward, if you read through powerpoints and go to class you should be fine. DON"T skip lab/lab assignments it's 25% of grade.
Klowden was a very nice person but sometimes unclear with his teaching. A lot of times he babbled on about a certain topic which wastes a lot of lecture time for the other material. Each test has many chapters on it so studying is tough. Clicker points are given so attendance is mandatory. Lab is a breeze though.
Hes a nice guy but very boring when it comes to lecture. He is willing to answer questions and will try to explain things so you understand them better. He posts his lecture notes online and during lecture he just reads off of the slides. Going to class is pointless. Tests are very tough- study days in advance. His practice questions don't help.
Textbook: Didn't use once, Quizzes: Harder than tests but online, Tests: Study/memorize the lecture's powerpoint slides and you will be fine, Attendance: Not graded, but if you miss classes it can become overwhelming, Lab: Very, very easy
I think that this class was much harder than it had to be. Group project was a lot of work but I learned a lot from it & was glad that it took the place of a final exam. Material didn't seem difficult but the tests were excruciatingly hard! The class requires a tremendous amount of studying! Study every single slide. the hardest class in my 4 yrs.
Klowden knows his stuff, but he makes sure to make the class hard. It's a very detailed class as is, but his tests are filled with trick answers and "A, B, A and B but not C, A and C but not B, etc." type format, making it difficult to get the right answer unless you know the material by heart. Study his lecture notes hard and you can pass.
Nice dude, passionate about the subject. But his tests are awful. In order to get a good grade you have to dedicate all your free time to studying for them. The questions on exams are mostly trick-type questions and so you have to know the material inside and out to get stuff right. Not a fan of how he does things.
His tests are lecture heavy. I didn't need to use the textbook much, but he had certain excerpts that you had to read from the book and would definitely show up on the exams. His tests were tricky but I didn't study more than three days in advance for a test and I got an A.
Clicker questions for attendance and potential extra credit. Textbook not totally necessary but helpful for getting a better understanding of lecture content. Don't overlook anything from his powerpoints, anything on them is fair game for exams. Exams are tricky and require a good understanding of the material.
I would recommend avoiding this teacher at all costs.
Exam are tough (average around 70% after 10-15 point curve) and make up 72% of grade with no dropped exams. Best way to study for exams is to focus on the powerpoints that he posts online and maybe some accompanying notes taken during class. Interesting, passionate lecturer and knows his stuff.
DO NOT take him. His exams are WAY harder than they need to be. most questions are tricky af. ABCD(all of the above)E(none of the above) for all 50 questions. Avg exam scores are C's after a 15% curve, which means everyone get's F's on the exams. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Unless u want to put in ALL of ur time for this course you WILL NOT get an A
Dont do it. Double check that this class is mandatory for your major because it might not be. Lectures are FAST. Tests are about 3 weeks apart on 6-7 chapters. Slight curve on some tests. Clicker for participation but look at other options before taking this teacher. seriously
Okay so, his classes are really tough not gonna lie. Dont waste your time reading the Textbook unless you are assisngned .you have to read a lot you have to be good at memorizing literally very ppt for test then you will have a chance of B+ on tests (with the curve of 14-16%)and maybe an A . quizzes are easy 4% google-able ;)
Extremely difficult exams, does not curve as high as other classes that curve. Know every single slide in his PowerPoints and you should do fine on his exams. His exam answers consist of "A, B, A&B, C, B&C, A&C, All the above, None of the above" So you really have to know your stuff. Offers one extra credit assignment in the lab portion.
There are 4 exams, the 4th being the final. For the exams, study/memorize the ppt and you will get an A. Lab is super easy, just read the manual a couple of times before. Some extra credit if you get the clicker questions right. Exam questions can be difficult, but they are not as difficult as made out to be. Just read the ppt and you'll be golden!
He is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. I didn't go to lecture and got As on the exams, just make a quizlet from his powerpoints and you'll be fine. Gives extra credit from clicker questions that boosts your grade up to 3%.The lab is very easy; manual is provided. I read the manual the night before lab, took notes, got 8-10/10 on quizzes.
The people below me are lying when they say he isnt as bad as people make him out to be. This man is hard... his exams are hard. The only way to get an A is if you MEMORIZE every detail of his slides. He will write questions on the tiniest of detail. Like one word mentioned once on one slide. Don't take him if you have the opp to take a diff proff
Professor is friendly and funny. He is knowledgeable + passionate about what he teaches. He is very helpful in both lecture and office hours. This class is demanding. 3 tests composed of minute details from lengthy powerpoints, and a semester-long group project involving a research proposal and presentation. Fine instructor, but not an easy A.
5 tests non cumulative. I was able to get an A in each exam but I would study every detail in the PowerPoint and it would take a good week or so to do that. Lab is easy as long as you show up. Takes participation too.
Professor Klowden knows his biology. He makes his class engaging. His tests are hard so you have to study at least a week in advance. Study and memorize everything on the powerpoints. The book helps to understand concepts which you need to know for the tests but some people get by without the book. Overall, I enjoyed his teaching.
I have always been amazing at biology but I some how failed this class. I put in at least 2 weeks of nonstop studying for this class but only managed a 67 as my highest test grade. With that being said if you're not willing to work hard and devote time to this class I would recommend taking it with a different professor. Great guy though
He was very nice, funny, and gave a lot of opportunities for extra credit. A lot of people had trouble with his test, but I didn't think they were bad. Just read the powerpoints. The only hard part was that the material was boring so sometimes it was hard to study. Study 3-4 days before the test and you'll do fine. Lab is easy, I got a 100%.
This class moves extremely fast and there is such a large amount of information to learn for each exam. There are about 4-6 chapters on each exam with lots of small details to remember. iClicker is used in class for attendance but not for accuracy. Exams are often curved which is a plus. Lab section is super easy, too.
Not a bad class to take if you are great with memorization. 5 non cumulative exams! Review the information after every lecture and take detailed notes. Not a class where you can cram so study on a weekly basis. Some of the chapters are really dense so I suggest having a study group! Great prof!
I would strongly suggest taking a different class or a different professor. Exams are needlessly difficult, with questions coming from one or two sentences in the textbook. Quizzes and attendance grades do little to balance out the terrible averages from his exams. Do not take unless you are willing to devote A LOT of time into memorizing the book.
Avoid his class. Seems to think his class is the only one students take. Fill in blank tests and quizzes. Spelling counts. Just dont take the class. And if you do. Good luck
Do not take if you want to ruin your GPA. Simple as that.
I've had this teacher for Ecology and Bio 2 so I know how he tests and what how his class goes. The best advice I can give is do not take his class. His tests are unbelievably hard, and you rarely have enough time to take them. He also the first teacher ive seen lie about his test averages.
BEWARE of Dr. Klowden. HARDEST CLASS I HAVE TAKEN AT UCF! makes tests super hard. Be ready to study a BUNCH if you take this class.
Nice guy until he starts writing tests. This professor talks for an hour and a half straight and doesnt take a breath. Tests are needlessly difficult. I would study so much and still get Cs and Ds. I thought this class was miserable and I do not regret dropping this class at all. Take this class if you are passionate about ecology.
if you don't have a passion for ecology then you probably won't pass. his exams are crazy hard and he doesn't drop any. he talks for the whole hour and a half class. he gives extra credit but its 5% of your overall grade. he's a nice guy and you can tell he loves ecology.
!DO NOT TAKE HIM! I've taken him for both Bio2 and Eco and they are the only classes I have failed. His lectures always go over, but just reads PPTs that are uploaded to webcourses. Exams are 95% of your grade, attendance is the other 5%. Offers up to 5pts extra credit. Exams are curved so much and the avg is still a 70. The exams are SO HARD!!!!!
Just take someone else if you can. His exams are the only grades for the course and they are so ridiculously hard. No matter how confident you are on the material, the way he words exam questions cause you to second guess everything. He is a smart guy, but truly does not care how students do on his exams.
Klowden's tests are VERY specific to his lecture slides, so you'll definitely need to study up for them. That said, if you're interested in wildlife/species interactions like I am, it's not all too hard of a class! As long as you're willing to go to his lectures (which are funny and entertaining), it's not really a tough class!
DO NOT TAKE!! Hardest class ever. Test heavy and are long and you do NOT get enough time to finish. The final is 8 super long chapters that is practically impossible to memorize EVERY detail from 70+ slides each chapter. He wants you to know EVERY article and example from the slides. He does not consider that we have other classes to study for.
Hes a great guy, but as a professor hes a nightmare. Your grade is 3 exams&the final plus attendance. You can study till you drop for these exams and you still wont be prepared, the tests are long&Q's are poorly worded. Plus its very hard to go to class because its so boring. Hes the only ecology prof so dont take it unless you absolutely need to.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. Power points make sense and are filled with a lot of information. The problem is that your grade is mostly determined by only tests which are very difficult to pass no matter how much you may study or know.
If you take Klowden you have to expect to work for your grade, if you never come to class and neglect the material he gives you you're going to fail. His tests were multiple choice w/ a few short answers, the study questions he posts are really helpful albeit time consuming. I would say he's worth taking though because he makes it not so boring.
This teacher is horrible. I had him for bio 2 and this class and both were ridiculously hard, especially since ecology is not a hard class. I passed his ecology with a C, then retook it with a different teacher and got a high A. His lectures and his test don't match up at all. Use the buddy system if you go to his office hours....
This class was definitely difficult. You have to create your own study guide because he will not provide one. Try to take notes on the powerpoints and match it with the textbook to understand the lecture. Pop quizzes are used to measure attendance. The labs line up with the material so you can apply the lecture material. Take notes in lab!
Absoulutely the worst professor I have taken at UCF. Lectures dont match notes or exams. Quizzes 10-50 questions for only 30ish minutes. Never gives enough time on exams. Class average on exams are always failing. I really hope he curves our final grade. My highest test grade so far is a 63% :(
HORRIBLE professor, please don't ever take him. He makes the class harder than it's supposed to be. I feel like he gets happy when he sees students fail or struggle. Not happy with my grade at all cuz he just doesn't know how to teach. Avoid him as much as you can. He thinks he owns students but in reality, he's a clown!!
I like Dr Klowden because you can tell he is passionate about the subject, but this class is very hard. Exams are short essay style. Course is lacking structure which makes studying the material hard. Time-consuming discussion assignments every other week which don't have anything to do with what the exam is on. Little to no feedback after grading.
He's clearly passionate about the material but his class is probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. The material itself is not bad but he is a really harsh grader; there is only one timed-exam (all short essay questions) and two projects (one individual and one group). Overall, you have to work HARD to do very well in his class
Dr. Klowden's class was really challenging. He is an extremely harsh grader but doesn't lay out clear expectations for assignments. All his exams are short-essay response and are worth a lot; I found it difficult to get above a good grade on each one. Seriously, do not underestimate how much time needs to be put in to succeed in his class.
Worst Professor Ive had. Tough grader. The entire class (20/30 classes) was watching other students present their projects for 1.5 hours and taking a quiz THEY made on it. One midterm - not enough time and avg was really low. Rude and snarky comments in feedback. Huge group project (not bad). Material was fun, he just barely taught.
Professor "Clown"den should be avoided at all cost. He requires students to lead the lectures and gives 0 effort to teaching material on his own. He is also extremely condescending and rude to students. I am a male student and have seen my female classmates get destroyed by his feedback even though they exceeded his "requirements"
This class will be the worst for your GPA. It was not informative and was completely presentation based. No actual material from textbooks was used to teach about the subject. The professor is very tough on grading and does not respond to any questions on grading. You will be put to work in this class and graded based on what the professor wants.
I would never take this professor again. I wish I had some warning of how this class would be so I hope you take this as your warning. If you can take a different course or even a different professor, do it. This class was pointless as we were graded based on what the professor saw fit, rather than what the correct answer was. Essay style exams.
Self teaching class which is harshly graded by his standards. Impossible to get an A on assignments no matter how much you stick to the guidelines. No respect from the professor and would not ever recommend.
This is a tricky class. You're asked to do about 10 hours of reading, lectures, and more reading per module (multiple modules per exam, the ONLY 4 grades), but if you have a general base of knowledge in the environment you can easily cut that down to maybe 3 hours for an 80%. DO NOT go in expecting an A in this class and work smarter not harder ;)
I went into this class with an open mind and ready to learn. But I was quickly disappointed when I found out that the class was graded mostly by tests. The material that is on the lectures and powerpoints isnt nearly what is on the tests. The tests are super hard and if you didnt study enough you will fail.
It is a self-taught class with only 4 exam grades going into the grade book. From what I got, the professor mistakes "challenge" for "set up to fail". His exams do not match lecture notes or text wordage. His thinking "study hard and you will do well". I studied more for this class than any other in the last four years and I still feel defeated.
Maybe ecology comes to me easier than others but I thought this class was moderately easy (at least compared to other bio major classes). The lectures were all pre-recorded and interesting. He talks very slowly so I played at 1.5x. Tests required you to think but not too bad.
I really enjoyed this class because I love the subject, but it is a very difficult course. Don't take this course with more than one other hard class. Dr K is very knowledgeable and fair, but don't expect to get full points on a test question unless you write down every single thing he said on that topic.
Loved this class. Def Dr Ks easiest lab since there's no exams- just a field trip every week, weekly worksheets, and 3 presentations. Was super great to be learning in the field but if you don't love being sweaty, dirty, and buggy don't take this class haha. He can be a tough-ish prof in other courses but in this class he is more laid back for sure
Lots of reading different journal articles but the material is interesting and related to the class. A tough class simply because it is so dense, one test had 500 PowerPoint slides to study. Each homework assignment had feedback letting you know what needed tweaking for the next submission and tests were a mix of multiple choice and short response
This class is supposed to be an introductory course. Instead, his exams are as if this was the student's 2nd or 3rd ecology-related course. The exams are not structured like his lectures or study aids he provides. Most of the questions on the exams are based on examples he gives in the PowerPoints, very few are actually concepts that are taught.
Get ready to have your mind blown. His lectures are nothing like his tests. This is my second time around taking him and worst professor I have ever had. Study all the nuisance examples in his powerpoints because that's mostly the test. Not conceptual. No assignments. Extra credit he gives is time consuming and barely worth anything of your grade.
This class is A LOT of material. The lecture exams and lab exams are mostly written response so you'll have to really study every word he says. As difficult as the class is, Dr. K really does everything he can to make the class and field labs fun! But I would really consider taking this class with easier classes bc it will take up all your time
Gregg is a great professor and his class is great. You will have to take notes like you've never taken in your life and study everyday for his exams. They are in depth and will test your knowledge on the subject. You will have to study at least twice a week or everyday if you want to be prepared. Overall what you put in is what you get.
Great Professor! He is very passionate about what he teaches and you can feel it in the classroom. His exams can feel intimidating at first because of how long they are, but they are easily passable if you attend his lectures. We only had 4 exams for the whole semester, he provides practice questions that are very similar to his exam questions.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Avoid at all costs. Waste of your time and money. You only get graded for the tests and if you do not study for 24 hrs straight you will not be able to pass. All of his exams are all trick questions.
super quirky guy, and you'll need a calculator for this class, ik it's an ecology class but trust me. has 4 exams and will take your highest grade and make it weigh the heaviest, if you're confused talk to him or his TA during office hours, his TA was amazing, and he is willing to explain anything that confuses you, beware exams are hard!
I get now why he's so divisive. He REALLY cares about his subject, but the problem is that he expects you to care just as much. If you don't, then the effort he's asking for will be too much. Like, studying *hundreds* of slides for each test, and *super* stringent & long rubrics for discussions & project. Only take him if you're extremely serious.
Dr. K is a great professor. He gives really interesting lectures and is clearly motivated in his field. However, this is a 4000 lvl bio class, don't expect it to be easy. He provides guidelines on how to study and only pulls test questions from lectures. Attend class and you'll be fine. Grade is 3 exams and a large group project.
Dr. Klowden is one of the most passionate professors I have had at UCF. He truly pours his heart into this class. However it is TOUGH and extremely time consuming. Exams are long and very specific with tons of material assigned to each one. There's also a huge group project that will take up a lot of your time throughout the semester.
He's incredibly enthusiastic, and clearly cares about what he is teaching, but his tests are bonkers and frankly overwhelming at best, nearly impossible at worst. He expects you to dedicate all of your time to his class as though other classes don't exist. Good luck if you have to take him for something.
EXTREMELY TEST HEAVY! Exams are 60 questions not including free response. Extremely detailed exams and many are multiple choice answers. Long power points. Lectures take entire class time and professor will continue to teach after class is over, stops when he decides class is over. Do not recommend taking with other strenuous courses.
98% of your grade in the class will be exams, which are long, hard, and intense. If you do not know every detail of every powerpoint, you probably will not succeed well with this professor. He is VERY passionate about ecology, which is appreciated, but many of us are here to learn the basics, not to pursue a career in ecology.
Do not take this professor if you are not a good test taker. The 4 exams are 98% of your grade each weighted different. Exams have trick questions and are extremely confusing. Grades are locked for the entire semester so you have to calculate it yourself. There is one extra credit opportunity if you do it wrong it can hurt your grade.
Nice prof but lectures where long and drawn out, exams where very challenging and lengthy. Grades are based on 4 exams and one xtra credit assignment. exams are weighted differently with your best being worth 32% of your grade. Not a easy walk-in the park ecology class like many anticipate. You will need to dedicate many hours to pass.
Professor Klowden was a very dedicated professor; the exams were our only grades so that puts a lot of pressure on you to do well. Understand the study questions he provides, making them into flashcards works best. If you can make yourself practice these flashcards a little bit everyday at least a week before the exam, you should do well!
This class has a lot of information and was graded only by exams and some extra credit. The textbook and his lecture slides are very helpful. His lectures are long and information-heavy, and some of the wording on his tests is tricky. Highly recommend studying with a group, going over his review questions, or making/finding flashcards or quizlets.
Klowden's class is info-packed, with exams as the main grade. Definitely use his review questions, flashcards, and study groups to prep. Unstuck AI is also great for practice quizzes. Lectures are long but worth attending to understand the tricky wording on tests.
Tests Were Hard if You Don't Have Advanced Knowledge in Biology TT Written (Fill in the Blanks, FRQs) and a Few MC Q's. Grades Were Curved Though Only By a Few Points. Wished I Studied More. Quizlet is Your Best Friend ;-) Group Sabotaged Me. Did More of the Work. Make Sure that You Still Do Your Best Individually.
