Really knows what he's talking about, but hard to follow, skips around a lot
NO BOOK! just read the notes he gives online and you'll be set for the class. I never studied and 4.0. what more can you ask for!Recommended.
Speaks softly in class lectures. Other than that good teacher. No surprises, follows outline to a T and will work with you if you have questions or problems.

Do not sit in the back of the classroom, you will not hear him. But, he is an easy professor. Highly recommended.
Best Class Ever! I went the last 2 weeks of class and passed with 4.0. Easy easy! Definitely recommended.Notes online, quizzes online. what more could you ask for.
Worthless class if you're trying to learn anything. Being in class is useless since all material is online. Some of test questions are tricky and retarded.
straight to the point
Great instructor. Has spent a lot of time in Russia so the class is mixed with personal experiences and photos. Leard far more than I expected. Quizes are online and some what difficult, but passable. Highly recomended.
Awesome class. Professor Allar makes it interesting and he has a very dry sense of humor which is excellent.
He was a fun professor who interacted with the class and gave good lectures with enthusiasm.
Very very very boring
Easy class, everything is online. However, the group work is annoying. Great class if you dont mind being read to like you are still in third grade.
Everything is online. Quizes are a bit tricky. Group work is annoying. Teacher is a nice guy and very interestiing. Lectures can get a lil dry. Very easy class. Highly recommended!!!
If you can handle looking at his *views from the church slide show EVERY LECTURE* youll do ok.. hes an easy grader but he is SO DAMN BORING everythings online if your interested in russia u should do good
I recommend this professor. Not highly recommend, but recommend nonetheless.
He is goofy. Likes to speak in Russian on the first day of class and make you look stupid. He also is very tolerant of slacking, and the group projects provide a nurturing environment for just that. Classes are boring. You can learn everything from the online material.
The class is very boring, but he speaks in russian the 1st day and it makes you wonder what you have just got into but its not bad at all besides the slides and him speaking thw work itself is online besides the map and group project. so that makes it better
You can't count on his grading system, it is unclear. Otherwise he's a good guy and knows what his talking about.
It's an easy class if you acutally stay for classes. There are no inclass exams. Only online quizzes which are a breeze if you pay attention. He's very clear although a little dull at times. Take his class though. It's an easy good grade without a lot of effort.
This class is a very laid back one. If you take decent notes, and read the online material, the online quizzes arent that bad. A lot of group work, which makes the class less boring. The internet assignments are so easy. If you want an easy grade, take this class.
This class is SO Boring! Professor means well, But can be annoying. Everything is online but you still have to come to class casue Participation counts. You are seperated into Groups the 2nd class and basically don't interact with anyone but your group, then you have to teach the class about your G. Project, this includes a 25 ? quiz and powerpoint
the guy does the best he can. still, i don't think his grading is all that fair but maybe i didn't try as hard as i should have. but i wouldn't take again.
A pretty easy class. Makes you do a group project and grades primarily on that. The quizzes are a little difficult and the notes provided are hard because you have no book to back them up. STUDY and pay attention!
I took his online course. The course was very easy and I'd reccomend it to anyone. You do have to study the online materials for a quiz every week. The quizzes are basically open book. He is also very helpful in returning Emails promptly. If you don't like WebCt, don't take this class. You will be on WebCt twice per week.
He is very disorganized he quizzed the class on information that wasn't present in the chapter. Quizzes are kind of confusing but internet assignment were easy.

This class is one that's relatively study intensive but at the same time easy enough that it's a good gen. ed course. Professor Allar doesn't use a textbook but posts all study materials online for students to print off and/or use for studying. The online exams are easy if you pay attention in class and go through the notes. Is a great class
He is a great teacher. No text book is required everything you need he posts on moodle. no tests just quizes and their a group assignment that is the basis of your grade but its a really good assignment and kind of easy. I really enjoyed the class one of my favorites. Show up and do the work and you'll be fine
Very nice and understanding. His internet ass. are easy ( the last one was a bit challenging. All notes are posted online. He is very clear what he wants. You will work for your grade. Group project is the most work. The tests are a bit wordy. They are online and timed and you only have 30 min. You actually need more time but the class is not bad.
Very annoying assignments....time consuming....boring online lectures....was the most annoying 16wks of my life!
Bring a pillow to class, his lectures are boring and pointless. All the material for the quizzes is posted online. Class is pretty easy, but you might pull your hair out trying to pay attention to lectures
Took his class online. The only reason I take online classes is because most online classes lack group projects. This class clashed with my fulltime work schedule. The assignments were time consuming. We had a quiz every week plus the assignments on top of that. On top of all that, we had to do a group project, something else that was completely ti
Very Easy. Very Helpful. Just read and pay attention.
PLUS: posts all materials needed, good communication. NEGATIVE: gives a full load and then some. If you take it, take it alone, because (it was online) he acts like it is your only class. Lots of "resources" posted for weekly quiz. HUGE presentation and lots of crap writing assignments in between (graded subjectively). THIS CLASS REALLY BITES
WAY TOO MUCH WORK! I received A's on all of my assignments in the class, and I received a B on my quizzes, and somehow I ended up with a 3.5. When you turn in your assignments, he criticizes everything, therefore there is more of his writing than yours when you get your paper back. I understand he knows more than me, it's his major!
If your opinion doesn't match his then you'll get it wrong. Quiz material not all covered in the assigned readings. All in all, I did learn a lot.
I took intro to Russia class. He has 4 online quizzes and they are timed. His quizzes are hard. There is group project. From beginning class to the end you will be working with same group people. His class is pointless cause he doesn't teach notes that he post online. He treats his class like online. There are 5 online assignments and they are easy. He is picky on grammar and spelling for any assignment you turn in. Overall his class is okay as long you do your own work and participate in class.
I took this class online NO BOOK REQUIRED! =) Not extremely hard but you do have to read the notes including the readings the resources. The professor is extremely helpful and answers any and all questions very promptly. I would highly recommend this class if you are looking for something easy and interesting for your Gen Ed.
I took his online class. VERY easy. I took it as a gen ed with a ton of hard classes and I did fine. There are 8 internet assignments and 13 timed quizzes. NO BOOK! He gives you all the info. Also you do a group project... kind of a pain. I HIGHLY suggest him and this class! Everything was super easy! He responds quickly and is very helpful!
What an amazing professor!!! I would definitely take him again! He let his class take control and asked us what we wanted out of the class. His grading is pretty fair. The class discussions were in depth and really searched for good answers, but in all, he's a really good guy!
Good teacher. Very helpful. Not an "easy" class but not really hard. Actually made Russian history somewhat interesting. Big group project that lasts all semester and pretty much ruins the class.
Nice guy. He's clearly enthusiastic about the course material and eager to help. Quizzes are fairly frequent but very easy. Assignments are also super easy, minimal effort required. There's only one paper and it's short (4-6 pages), so this class is a breeze overall. Got me interested in Russian history when I barely knew about it.
Most likely the best professor I have ever had,he was so helpful and so nice. Enjoyed taking this class online. Quizzes are hard, so study. Overall He is an amazing professor.
Nice teacher, if another class was offered by this guy i would take it.
If another class was offered by this guy i would take it.
At first I was very skeptical of this class, because at first it seemed confusing and not very clear. However, after a few weeks I started to love this class and look forward to it every week. He makes sure the class is interesting and is a WEALTH of knowledge about Russia. I highly recommend taking him no matter your major. Also, NO TEXTBOOK.
I feel bad saying this, because he's a nice enough person, but not a very good prof. Totally unclear with what he wanted for his papers (seemed to be making everything up in his curriculum as he went along), always insisted that his opinions were the only right ones (very passive-aggressive.) Didn't actually teach anything, just assigned papers.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had. He expected us to create the curriculum for the course and had no knowledge of the subject he was teaching (Global Health). The first few classes he assigned articles and we sat and talked about the same thing for 2 hours. I dropped the class when I realized nothing was going to change.
I like the fact that he is passionate about the subject matter and a very nice person. I would recommend this class to others!
This whole class is based on group projects. You learn random things to help make you a more "globally oriented citizen" though I didn't personally like the class. The professor gives good feedback though he didn't real teach, rather just assigned projects to make us teach ourselves.
An easy class to pass but hard to endure. He tries to pit students against each other based on their political beliefs & ridicules opinions that don't correspond with his own. His assignments are to read an article about topic & the "discussions" in class are dull ex: "What's one word that would sum up the article you read?" Worst class I've had.
Great professor. Make sure you turn things in on time. Quizzes every week but he gives you all the information you need for each quiz.
Perspectives on Russia class is a breeze, good for a gen ed! Only one paper, work on it throughout semester your choice of subject concerning Russia. Prof Allar is very easy to talk to, but he will pick on you for class discussions more often if he knows you like to talk or you're smart. Ask him for stories, wont kill much time, but they are fun.
Asks broad questions, expects you to have a detailed answer in 1 min. Asked me how globalization has changed the way my generation is looking for jobs and my options for a career (put me on the spot). Replied with just a few words- he wasn't impressed. If you don't mind being called on for random hard questions he's your guy. not my cup of tea...
Overall, Prof Allar isn't too bad. His classes are pretty boring if you're not interested in Russian history. He's very set in his ways, especially with his assignments. If you don't follow his directions for assignments word by word, you won't recieve a good grade. If you're looking for a pretty easy/boring Gen Ed, take this class.
Honestly, I have not had so much anger toward a professor before. VERY set in his ways. If you have a different view point, he won't accept it. The class itself isn't hard, he's just stingy. His views make me angry and the way he challenges your own. Would not take this class/professor ever again. He thinks he's better than everyone.
Amazing man, super sweet. Homework is reading heavy and multiple assignment are due on the same days. Assignment are relatively easy but time consuming! Doing your homework you'll pass the class easily. No exams, but there are online quizzes which are basically exams, but open note/browser.
Definitely one of my favorite professors this semester. Going to the lecture isn't mandatory but he does have you do in class research essays and group projects that are due at the end of the day so it's important that you show up. The online assignments can be pretty reading heavy but are very manageable.
Went into this class just needing a B. For an entry level coarse I did not think it would be difficult at all however with a professor as bad as Mr. Allar it was tough. Mr. Allar must have short term memory loss due to him constantly adding assignments last minute. If a week is the 7th to the 14th for a topic he will add something on the 13th.
The class is meant for discussion and to express opinions but if yours differ from his he will be rude. Definitely stuck in his own ways and closed minded. Tons of assignments added randomly. Will mark you down on an assignment without giving any explanation as to why. Calls you out in class and will embarrass if you're shy.
Professor Allar wants his students to discuss difficult topics in global health openly; however, his approach is very off putting. While he yearn for student participation (10% grade), he often dismiss their opinions, create unpleasant discussions where students are pit against each others. I personally would not take any of his class again.
He does tend to call you out in class and if your views differ from his he can get a bit snarky, but overall he cares about his students and wants you to learn. His weekly quizzes and homework assignments are relatively easy, but he posts them in Moodle differently so you won't know what's due unless you look. Quick responses and very understanding
If you can avoid this professor, do so. His instructions are unclear, disorganized and inconsistent. He does not offer any actual lecture or teaching, and you are left googling all assignments or working in pointless group projects online. Classes are expensive and this professor is not worth the cost of school nor your time and effort.
I wouldnt recommend this teacher to anyone he is stuck in his own ways and if you try to reach out to him with a concern that you have and he thinks hes right even though hes wrong hes going to get rude and continue to go back and fourth with you, does not explain anything well but expects you to know everything and will put you on the spot, 0%
Prof Allar can be very rude in class and will make his students feel uncomfortable. He will pick on you to share about a sensitive topic even if you don't want to. He also is very unorganized on Moodle and will randomly assign things without saying when it's due. Outside of class, he is nice and understanding
Dr. Allar is a rare type of teacher. He cuts the fat of busywork (his assignments are mostly short readings and responses), instead encouraging you to think broadly about the material presented and actively participate in class. He is friendly overall, especially if you put in the effort and ask questions. This is not a tune-out, spit-back class.
Professor Allars class was a bit off putting. He really pushes for a conversation and makes you answer a question even if you dont know the answer. It kinda forms an anxious atmosphere among the students, but it did get the job done of understanding the material. No tests or books which is great. Do your work and participate and youll do fine.
All the bad reviews on this profesor talk about dissatisfaction with his asking questions or challenging ones beliefs. These questions dont correlate to your grade and our only meant for students to think critically rather than reiterate something you read in a text book. By chance Ive taken 2 of his classes. Dont regret them, neither will you.
Class was completely asynchronous with no lectures or scheduled meeting times. All assignments in a week usually took less than 1.5 hours. The readings were easy and he does stuff to try to make class interesting. Professor Allar is super approachable and is there to answer any questions that you may have. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Allar is extremely knowledgeable, cultured, and open-minded. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to learn the content, but also form their OWN opinions. I have to wake up super early to get to his class but I don't mind because it is an enjoyable class. He hates politics :)
In general, I like him and since he is very knowledgeable and explains things well. No tests either, just quizzes and a 5-page paper. But he really likes to call you out in front of the whole class which is embarrassing. He genuinely wants us to learn but it can be a bit anxious when he forces you to speak on something you don't understand.
Never again. One of the worst professors I've ever had. Confusing, nit-picky, and unorganized. He would never give me straight answers when I emailed him with concerns, his instructions are always conflicting. Nothing is good enough for him. The writing part isn't too bad. I'm a straight A student and I've never dealt with such a poor professor.
Professor Allar's class was one of my favorite courses I've had at OU. This was a hybrid class so we only met in person once a week for about an hour and a half on average. His class is not a lecture instead, he implements guided discussions. There are no exams in this class and the assignments were actually fun! I heavily recommend this professor!
Very knowledgeable guy and extremely understanding. The class is made up of Audio Discussion posts to a certain political/policy question, Internet Assignments, and module quizzes on the Pearson platform. Definitely learned a lot and was a good class! If given the chance take it with Allar for sure.
Prof. Allar's online class is extremely unorganized. Avoid him, take a different global perspectives gen ed if possible. I missed assignments because (for example) something in the Week 8 folder would be due AFTER something in Week 9. He does not show your total grade ever, I am in the final week and have no clue if I am passing or not.
Professor Allar was an okay professor. His Moodle course was disorganized and you will have to check daily to make sure you don't miss an assignment since it is scattered. The downside is that you will have to wait to see your final grade until the end of the semester which is a worry if you are failing or not. He is kind and will answer emails.
Allar is great! The only complaint about his class I had was we did not know what our grade was in the course the whole semester. He only put in the internet writing grades in but did not put any audio/critical writing questions in, which made it hard to know what your grade was. Also some assignments have different due dates so keep that in mind.
I was fine with this class besides when I was confused about an assignment and I would email him and ask him questions he seemed passive aggressive as if he explained it well already and I was just dumb. I was only confused on how he worded some things lol but other than that this class was good.
I have never had a professor sit on such a high horse before. He truly believes that people care about his class as something more than a grad requirement. He does not provide clear instructions, but will still grade you harshly for things you weren't aware of. There is also a lot of reading and discussion boards are made up of voice recordings.
The class was really easy! He responded to emails pretty fast and helped if people in a group project weren't doing there part. Make sure you read the textbook and take the quizzes on time and you're fine.
This is the second class I have taken with Professor Allar. You have to buy the online book. This is where you take your tests and unit quizzes. You will have to do 10 audio recordings where you answer a question, and 8 internet assignments, with two of them being group assignments. All of this was very easy.
Stock standard online professor-- easily accessible, a lot of busy work. Weekly assignments that took an hour or two to complete. Gives plenty of time to do assignments (a week). Would occasionally pair up students for weekly assignments, but super easy.
Enjoyable class for the most part. I thought he was a good professor. The only thing I didn't like about him was his grading style. The class is a writing intensive but you don't actually write a paper, just a three-part annotated bibliography. Assignments are pretty repetitive but they are simple.
Easy and quick class. Shouldn't really take more than 3 hours a week to finish, besides the occasional partner assignment.
