he is the one of those teachers that you know does not want to be a teacher, he should be doing something else. Also he puts everyone to sleep.
He is a no nonsense teacher who is a little bit irritable. Always do your work and don't mess around. If you slightly apply yourself you should be fine.

good guy. reminds me of drew carey with more hair, less round, and no glasses. only strict when it comes to manners. don't talk when others are talking, simple. put in good effort and you're good to go. pay attention in class, hardly any effort required. besides, you satisfy your gordon rule, we all like that. :)

Good teacher, he is very nice and pretty easy going. His class is actually entertaining and as long as you do well on the speeches you'll get an A. I would definietly reccomend him.

IGNORANT/JERK! I have a condition that required me to leave his classroom (in an emergency) one day. Everytime I tried to get up he told me to sit back down and made a scene about it to the class. I finally RAN out and when I came back to get my books and leave he humilated me in front of the class. Having NO idea what I was going through.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Questions are never answered, very rude, and disrespectful. God forbid, you go to the bathroom in his class! You'd be better off reading the book and passing this class online!
Great teacher. He hates BS and puts up with none. If you are a reasonably interested student you will do great. I loved his class and easily got an A. He is a VERY good speaker and teaches the subject well. He gives great pointers. Just show him respect and follow directions and you will be fine.
Overall a very good class that you will benefit from greatly. Come to class and participate. He may seem rude at times, but come with an open mind. Yes, you will have to get up in front of class at least 15 times to give a speech. You will learn a lot. Don't crumble or rip paper in class.

Professor Barnes is a great professor. It took a few weeks to decide if I liked him, becuase he can be intense. But he cares about what he is doing. So if you get past his intensity, I think you will really enjoy the class. I would def. take him again if I needed to. He helped alot.

I liked his class. He's very funny, but does not put up with BS. His class is easy and is very lax on the speeches. His only drewback is he will withdraw you if you're late 4 times. Overall, highly reccomended

Prof. Barnes is interesting. The first day of class was pretty straight forward. Come to class & do your speeches OR withdraw from the class. He does not take BS. Great control of the class. DO NOT CRUMBLE PAPER! DO NOT COME LATE! You have to do a speech if you do. Nice guy though. Don't feel bad if he thinks your speech is boring.It helps to know!

I think Mr.Barnes is a great teacher despite his rudeness sometimes. But we have to understand that hes there to get down to business and to stop fooling around. I really liked his class, it helped me a lot with connecting with the audience. Just relax and enjoy doing the five speeches youll have to do. P.S dont miss any of the speeches. Trust me.
i was not stoked to take this class...but mr barnes is hilarious...he totally makes you feel comfortable...but dont mess around because he is serious to and if you dont wanna be there then leave, he pushes you to try and in the end its totally worth it. if he offered anymore classes i would take them....he is real and down to earth and honest
At first he might seem as rude and a pain. But as the semester goes through you get more used to his way of being. He might be hard on grading and embarrass you at times but it will definitely help you in the long run. DON'T be late for class!

avoid this teacher.the book is never used don't waste your 50 dollars on it he uses notes that are common sense the guy will make you do speech if you are 1 min late.he is very condescending when you ask a question. the guy is very picky in the speeches at least that was the case for me i got a C and did all my speeches.
class is very simple but prof has his days and can be kind of rude. class can be highly entertaining especially the clapping during speeches for mess-ups. Do your work and dont procrastinate and you'll get a B and practice speeches alot beforehand.

Very rude, he has like a military attitude especially about being late. Couldn't take it anymore and withdrew because I was too stressed out over this class and his attitude didn't help at all. I do not recommend this teacher.

He does not say what is going to be on either of the two exams. He covers roughly 20% of the material. He says he will cover all the material, but does NOT. You need to read the entire book on your own. Nothing is actually achieved by going to his classroom that cannot be achieved somewhere else. There are better professors than him.
The class was really easy.He grades easily and all the class is basically making speeches.As long as you follow the syllabus you will get a great grade.He can be nice sometimes but rude sometimes too.Midterm n Final easy!Don't be late!Impromptu speeches are fun! I hated it in the beginning and was going to drop but glad i stayed.
I don't recommend him if you are a shy person and expect to improve. He gives a lot of work in class as well as homework. He is not reviewing any exam. If you take his class make sure you do not take too many classes at the same time. Do not be late. Type all your papers. ALL. He can be rude at times but he will loosen up later in the semester.

I just wanted to add that he indeed can be very rude & rough around the edges at times but as a student who took his class 2-3 years ago I can say that my fear of public speaking is gone. When I started his class I was weak and now I do it with ease. His grading system breakdown is really effective and seeing others flops you learn how to succeed!
Professor Barnes is a little rough and does not tolerate tardiness, however, he is very helpful in removing all fear of public speaking. There are A LOT of presentations and speeches almost every other class. If you do ALL the work and attend every class, you will get a good grade ( I got an A).
He's rude, doesn't tolerate tardiness, but he was an easy A. You don't even have to buy the book. You will be working a lot in a group so I suggest picking the right person to work with because it can be a drag. He teaches exactly what you need to know and his exams and finals are super easy. Just learn the definitions.

As long as you attend class on time you will definitely pass. Speeches aren't hard . He doesn't allow you to make up missed speeches and is BIG on attendance. Passed with a B . Group work is given pretty often as well, so if you take him, be sure to group yourself with hard workers to get a good grade. TAKE HIM ! .. easy class.

Really hard to give a right comment. This professor is rather an army drill sergeant than a teacher. Rough, commanding and accepting no excuses regardless. HOWEVER, if you want to learn public speech, he will be a very good instructor because you will learn what you need and you will get an "A".
He's strict and all, and may be a bit of a meany sometimes. But, his class is quite simple. Just do the work and you'll be set. The only bone to pick with this guy is for lectures he doesn't really clarify about how much you should cover and you end up doing to much. But this class is a super easy A.

apparently good in person but online he was completely rude wasn't any help at all with anything and judge so critically on a speech class which was to learn i wasnt some professional politician who knew how to give a speech on top of eing incredibly shy and grades turned in were marked to not have been and not given points for my hard work.
Funny, smart, and an approachable personality. This teacher is unlike any I have ever worked with before. He helped me conquer my biggest fear of public speaking. All you have to do is TRY! If you don't put any effort in at all, you lose. Don't forget those online assignments, read the syllabus for due dates, and don't be late! You will be alright.
Prof. Barnes is great! The class was moderately easy. The key is to rehearse all speeches several times to make sure you get a good grade as there are SEVERAL of them, and complete ALL the assignments. Final and midterm are OK. He is not the nicest person in the world but he will sure make you a great speaker. Attendance is more than mandatory!

Intorduction to Public Speaking with Professor Barnes was a great class! I learned a lot and also had a lot of fun. He teaches clearly what you need to know in order to speak effectively and overcome nervousness. He makes it pretty easy to get an A, basically all you have to do is put in some good effort, and come to every class on time!
Yes.. he is rude but he makes it so easy to understand the material. Book is not needed. Basically just do the speeches, turn your assignments in on time and you will pass. attendance is mandatory plus be on time, always.
He is an AMAZING teacher! Speech is not my thing especially in front of people but he was very helpful. He is pretty strict on being late. If your late you have to do speech in front of the class but overall this class helped me get over my stage fright!! Plus you didnt really need the book.

While the material was very interesting, all the tests focused on was numbers. While it was on online course and I had the book it was very hard to find what he was looking for. He took points off of discussions for stupid things such as using a word to often. Would not recommend for an online class.

Even though this is an online course, we HAVE TO do 3 speeches video recorded with 8ppl for our audience, If not auto zero basically your grade depends on how flexible your schedule is to meet up with other online mates. Tests arent hard just flip through the book. But if I had known about the 8ppl req't I wld not have taken this class
While his speech preparation for the future certainly gears you towards successful speeches and organization, already, I am required to give speeches because my work peers and friend's have elected me to have the genuine personality. **MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THE SYLLABUS!**
Professor Barnes is not helpful when it comes to answering questions via email. He does not directly answer your question, and it is highly frustrating. Was not in the course long enough to find out how the course actually was. But in all he is useless when it comes to answering students questions.
SUPER Easy on-line class and very interesting, but be prepared to teach yourself which was fine by me. If u need a lot of attention look elsewhere. It was like we didn't have a prof at all (no interaction I mean NONE. If he did answer ur email it was one word.) Tests were right from his PowerPoints so download and print them and you've got it made.
I absolutely dread the idea of public speaking and a speech class. This class was fully online, very easy. 3 speeches you have to submit in front of an 8-person audience. Plan ahead of time! This class allows no room for procrastination. No late submissions. 10 quizzes & 10 discussions. Easy A, just participate and don't slack! Kind grader.

I would say its an easy class; however, his communication with students is vague and gives a mediocre grade if you don't do exactly as he says, such as giving me a C for not looking for an interview with a person involved full time in the journalism field. I didn't know anybody in the field so I interviewed a person doing an internship.

I took this class online thinking I didn't have to stand up to people and give a speech but this professor helped me overcome that. He makes you do 3 speeches in front of 8 adults and record them. There's no way to edit them because he will know. He grades very fairly and helps you when needed. The speeches are not even long. I actually enjoyed it.

This is the first online class that I have ever taken. English is my second language and Professor Barnes was truly helpful during this class. He gives a clean grading criteria since the beginning of the semester. The test are hard but if you study from the PowerPoint it helps a lot. Normally is 15 min for 10 multiple choice.
Took online. Easy class, do the assignments on time and you will receive full credit. Recommended for an easy elective credit.
I'm not happy with this professor. The group project is completely pointless and his communication skills need work.
The three live speeches were very involved and challenging for an online class and he graded pretty tough on them. Discussions are a big part and you have to respond to 2 others each time. The group project is very time consuming. I got C's for the speeches, A's in everything else. I had an 89 at the end, but he gave me an A anyway.
All I have to say is avoid this professor if you can.
Overall the class is fairly easy. Very black and white as to what is expected. However, on the syllabus it states that if you have a doctor's note late work may be permitted. I missed a test due to an illness in which I was prepared with my Dr's note, and his response was " yea, you could of still logged on to do your hw", "this is not an emergency

Save yourself the frustration and pick another professor. He doesn't communicate well with his students and doesn't give fair grades. He didn't even grade one of my assignments that I turned in on time and still submitted my final grade. Not worth the time or effort.

I can say I regret taking this class. Assignments that he give out is NOT clear . I email him to ask him to help me understand how to do a paper because the directions to assignments wasnt clear ,and he replied with "The directions are in Assignments. go to Assessments/Assignments" , as if I dont know how to use D2L .
He is a very tough grader. Also requires an online group project, which is super hard to do with people online. Each speech you have to have six people to watch you or you get a 0, so don't take this class if you won't be able to have 6 people sit down and watch you once a month.
If you take it online it is a little difficult. Be sure to have 5 plus people to sit in on your speeches
Horrible professor doesnt care about his students. Gives unfair grades i did all of my speaches and 90s on all my quizes and he still gave me an F!!
Overall good by me, he graded me fair. His quiz's seemed like there was no clear answer for the questions. That is the only bad feedback. As long as you follow his instructions you will pass this course with no problems and learn some cool stuff about yourself and others around you from the course chapters.
Ive taken him twice now, the first was speech. As in both. The class was fun actually, the tests were easy, I didnt mind the discussions & the projects held my interest. Id actually give him five stars except he makes you buy the book and cite pages for some discussions so buying it is a must. You can get an ebook for $30. Otherwise fun class.

He was an ok professor, the only thing I didn't enjoy were his quizzes. He only gave 15 minutes for 10 question tests which makes you rush to find the answers to the questions on time. His class was not so hard, and I had a good experience with him personally since because of a problem with my Interet I was not able to turn in an assignment on time and he was lenient and allowed me to turn it. The class is online and you pretty much have to teach yourself, he doesn't give much feedback when he grades but easy overall

I really enjoyed having this professor Extremely easy class. 10 discussions, 3 assignments. You HAVE to buy the book but it helps amazingly with his tests. His discussion criteria is a tad bit different from other teachers but nothing too hard. He isn't stressing and grades fairly. Take him!

You must have 6 people in your audience o. Your speeches. Then he is very manipulative by telling you that "there is no way mathematically you will pass his class.

The Worst Ever. He is lazy, does not provide clear instructions, forces you into the dumbest group project, gives tests on material that he doesn't go over, and gives one word feedback for assignments that need much more. His syllabus wasn't updated for Covid and doesn't have due dates on it. Gee, thanks. Avoid this guy like the plague.

This was one of the most frustrating professors I have had. He graded very harshly with no help on how to improve regardless of how much you ask, he does not answer emails, and his rubrics were borderline incoherent. The majority of this class is you reading the textbook and praying you followed the unintelligible instructions the best you can.

He didn't make an effort to make the class interesting at all so its just a read, do work, and leave type of class. This professor does not respond to emails. He provides poor direction. When he corrects assignments there is no guidance to improve next time. I would never take his classes again, nor recommend him.
Honestly, as long as you do all of his assignments and refer back to the online textbook for the quizzes you should do fine. He does however not respond to emails in a timely manner, does not give good instruction. He's not the best professor but it was an easy class as long as you do every assignment. PAY ATTENTION TO THE DIRECTIONS.
Get things done ahead of time, especially for discussions. (You must plan at least 3 days in advance if you want full credit.) It wasn't even the assignments that bothered me it was the unreasonably high expectations for a beginner's speech class. No examples for assignments only vaguely described instructions that end up hurting your grade.
I would NEVER take his class again. He makes you post your discussion and responses 3 days apart or he takes points off. He took points off on big projects for things I didn't do when he was clearly wrong and refused to fix them. He takes a while to answer emails and responds with 2 or 3 words. Doesn't care about his students or their well-being.
Took this class online and it was very easy for me. The workload wasn't a lot and everything was easy to understand. If, I needed helped with anything, he was willing to help me. Every speech, I completed, he provided outline to make help organize the speech , where he provide feedback to make sure everything was good before we presented.
I feel very discouraged in my schoolwork because of this teacher. I understand I had 2 assignments due, which I emailed him explaining why. and he didn't even respond to it. all my grades for my discussion were 100% so I have no idea why he gave me an F !!!!!!.
He refused to grade a speech even though I had submitted it on time with proof and my grade suffered because of it. I had to contact the dean and he doesn't care about his students I was lucky to pass. Also, he won't grade until the very last minute so you won't know your grades until they post. He doesn't answer emails diligently either.
I have no idea if he's good in person but please avoid this guy at all costs online. My sister, brother, and I all took him online and we all dropped it. The quizzes are not on anything in the book, he has a horrible attitude, and the assignments have nothing to do with the course content at all. He wants you to fail, it's impossible to get an A.
I'm taking this class now, do yourself a favor and look for another professor. Do NOT make the mistake I made and didn't drop the class. His discussion posts are VERY vague, will tell you to write 500 words for 3 very vague questions, grade discussions a month later, and give one-word responses to emails. very vague man
He does not grade on time, I had sent multiple emails regarding my speech submission being posted in the wrong area and nothing from him after a month, and a day before class he said he would grade it, but never did along with the persuasive speech. do not take this guy unless you have no choice, all his classwork is done by a specific criteria.
Wish I'd read up on him before. Extremely nitpicky, yet doesn't grade things for a month+ at a time. Very vague. Does NOT respond to ANY form of communication. If he does, he practically spits on his keyboard and hits send. Ridiculously drawn out discussion posts and requirements for said posts/assignments. An unpleasant experience overall.
I'm currently taking this class as a dual enrollment and I regret not having checked his name on this site before choosing his class. He takes way too long to grade, super harsh with small mistakes, and the gradings scale is off. Don't take his class unless you have no other choice, it's been a consistent headache for me.
Professor Barnes has been my teacher through out my accelerated speech class. He provides no feedback when asked questions, does not provide constructive criticism, and is just over all not a helpful teacher. Even if you copy and paste information from the syllabus to gain some understanding he will state that it was never said. I do not recommend.
He is a tough grader. He didn't even grade 5-6 of my assignments last/final speech and discussions until the last day, and he doesn't reopen assignments for any reason
If you take him, you'll find that he won't grade your speeches or discussions for over a month. He might respond to your emails, but he won't reopen assignments. Take another teacher to save your valuable time, grade, and money.
This professor has vague instructions and poor communication. However, if you stay on top of assignments and use tools like unstuck ai, you can manage the workload. The class is challenging but doable.
I had the pleasure of taking this class online, while some of the other reviews mention that he is a harsh grader and a vague man, I found his class to be relatively easy. I made sure to complete all my work on time and I did my best on the quizzes/discussions. He gave me good feedback on each speech, while also grading fairly and on time.
RUN! Does not communicate and will not care. Even if you meet all the criteria of the assignments, he will nitpick everything you do or say. Don't even bother taking this class. You won't even know you are failing until it's too late because he doesn't grade anything until the last minute. But expects you to do everything on time.
This guy singlehandedly made me change my mind about AI, I genuinely think AI would provide way more information and lessons than this guy. He grades all your assignments a month later, doesn't provide feedback, last minute assigns work , and most of the assignments are follow-ups which are due a couple days after the previous ones.
He didn't provide the finest feedback, but he did acknowledge that my friend had missed two of her tasks and assured her that the other assignments will benefit her and that the two missed assignments wouldn't have a significant impact on her final grade. So, he was really understanding and laid back even though he was very tough with his grading.
This professor is not as bad as the reviews make it seem. Is he super nitpicky ? yes. He's not even tough on grading the speeches. I worked full-time while taking his class and still managed to get everything done. Just do your work on time and follow directions thoroughly. You will be fine.
This was by far the worst professor I have ever taken. There were assignments do every single day of the week! Instructions were super specific, his way or no way. Mandatory discussion post due every single day of the week. Quizzes due everyday of the week. Do not even take the risk,I don't even care if its a last resort its not worth it. The worst
