Very good teacher. makes outlines for the day and sticks to them. Very helpful, can teach history to students who have no concept of history.
ok teacher! grades a little tough on his test but turn all asssigments because they are easy points. The final is just a debate.
Took in summer, very easy brief class. Practically gives you the whole midterm and final on review sheets before hand. Go to class and study the reviews its an easy B. Probably put 10 hours of work outside of class all together.
He's a really good teacher! I am not too into history, but he made class enjoyable because you could tell he really enjoyed it. He made me want to come to class. You have to really know what you're talking about to get an A though.
Beirich is a good teacher. He takes role and gives you the the option of taking 1 out of the 2 midterms.Have to write one 5 page research paper. Final is hard but if you study easy B. A little difficult to get an A. He's easy to talk to and sticks to the syllabus.
not really into history, but i did learn a lot in his class. must attend don't miss you get pts taken off and they will hurt u if you are on border line of a grade. very hard grader gives study sheets, but be prepared to study and you must know what you studied. all essay exams with some T/F and multiple choice ?'s. keep all tests till the end.
He grades wierd.
I dont know, i like history..just not this kind of history. I didn't really pay attention in class.. but he gives study guides and tells you what he wants..is pretty flexiable. Make sure you go to class and you will be okay since he gives you points for being there!
I took this over the summer. he was pretty easy in grading, i failed the first test but still ended up passing. Not a hard grader and will try to work with you!
He was a great teacher. Awesome to have my first semmester in college. He helps in everyway possible. The final is an easy debate and there are 2 tests, just study the notes and take notes during lectures. Awesome easy class and would reccomend to everyone. He is a chill guy too.
The two classes I took with Dr. Beirich fulfilled lower-division general education requirements, and were geared more toward the non-historically inclined student. Dr. Beirich's expectations were reasonable and he presented the material clearly. Lectures correspond to test questions, which he distributes in advance. Great prof, very helpful.

just listen
Not really that hard except that he can be a tough grader. He gives you a study guide for the test and you should memorize the primary documents that he lists.
I really liked Dr. Beirich. He lectured in a storyline, and whenever there were loopholes, you can google the information and find everything you need. He has a mini essay, a 10+ page research paper, midterm and final (essays). Learn exactly what he teaches in class and you will be prepared for his tests.
Beirich has a REALLY easy class. He only has two tests the whole semester (mid-term and final) and he has two essays due (primary source review and book review) both of which are extremely easy. He does grade a little tough, but he is pretty chill. He uses "Asking the Right Question" alot, but does it in class, not at home. Overall, good class.
Light course load. Participation is key. His grading is subjective. Lots of stimulating questions. Overall, this course is pretty much common sense, but he reinforces ideas. You'll analyze information better. Take him. :]
Great class not really my interest but i have taken him before for 301 and hes very easy going, flexible on when work is due. Very easy going professor. I would recommend taking any class with him.
Easy class if you listen to the lectures. He only assigns one essay and two tests. He takes attendance randomly all though it's not "mandatory". I really enjoyed him he's pretty laid back and flexible. He lectures every class and has slides sometimes. Might be really boring for non history majors but I'd take him again.
Ok I have taken Professor Beirich for four classes, 332, 302,317, and 333. He is by far the most interesting and intelligent professor I've ever taken at State. Depending on which class you take, his assignments are 2 to 3 essays usually 3 pages, a midterm and final. If you are alive and take good notes you should do well.
Took him over summer. One paper, midterm and final. Took attendence daily, Idk how I got a B in the class because I got a got a C on the midterm a B on the paper, and I am pretty sure I failed my final...I had perfect attendence so that probably helped. Easy grader on the paper. I learned a lot! Really nice guy!
A nice man, who is definitely passionate about history. Interesting class. Attendance is mandatory if you want to do well. Take lots of notes and then regurgitate as much of this information as you can on his essay tests. If you study and pay attention, it should be easy to get an A (even for non majors).
Beirich's a good guy. He's funny and entertaining. It really bugs him when people text even though he tries to play it off like it doesn't...he takes attendance 5 times randomly so it's up to you if you wanna gamble on not going. make sure you STUDY for the tests. They're pretty difficult to bs.
one of the worst teachers on campus! His class is easy, but it was a waste of time. He was never prepared so he had us do group work the whole semester. He would always get sidetracked and tell random stories. Not really helpful in what we're learning. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Overall a good guy, but CANNOT teach anything whatsoever! He grades really subjectively, not by points earned. you could have earned B but if he notices you don't go to class a lot he'll give you the C! Do yourself a favor and do not take this class as the person below said
I got an A in his class and am a non major. Learned a lot too. Highly recommended!
302 is a required class for history majors, and like 301, you are being assessed on your commitment to the major as well as the coursework. lots of interesting reading, holds you accountable and is so helpful. one of my favorite teachers. hilarious. if you're the walking dead, of course you won't like it. if you love history, you'll love him!
Great Professor. 302 was easy, he helps you through each assignment and goes over the final paper in a one on one conference. 318 was great. You have to write 2 out of 3 papers, midterm and a final. He's pretty laid back. If you need extra time or help he will work with you, as long as you tell him in advance. Really wants student to succeed.
Beirich is a great instructor. It's unfortunate that he was uncomfortable teaching the material in 318. His lack of organization / knowledge made the class challenging. As a history major, I have enjoyed other courses with him though. You can't win them all!
Dr. Beirich is one of those rare instructors who actually "get" it.
beirich is hilarious, knowledgable, helpful, and kind to his students. 302 is core/theory and it takes dedication to stay on top of the work. but he makes it as pleasant as possible, and again...hilarious. wonderful prof and human being. yay!
Dr. Beirich is a great instructor and Reformation Europe is the third class I've had with him, but for some reason I struggled a little bit with the material more so than in his other classes . It's not his fault. He's been very clear and understanding.
He is a great professor! Professor Beirich made 302 very enjoyable and a breeze. Just show up to class and participate in discussions and you will do fine. The final paper was tough, but that is the way it is supposed to be. He is a really funny guy and easily the best instructor i have had at CSULB.
Great professor with a witty humor. Professor Beirich has a casual approach to his class that allows students to feel at ease in his class. He treasures student's inputs and thoughts. Hist 101 consisted of some homework, midterm, group project, book review, and final. Take this professor!
this class was EASY. the prof is funny too (if you enjoy sarcasm) everything is laid back. there is only 5 things that go into your grade and he gives PLENTY of time in class to do it. heck that's pretty much all you do. he also shoes SNL skits. I highly recommend the class it is very laid back. AND THIS CLASS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HISTORY
He was really funny, and even though I recommend doing the reading, the class was fairly easy and as long as you pay attention and take notes during the lectures, you should be fine :)
Favorite professor at CSULB! Makes history interesting and fun and has a great sense of humor. Easygoing and a great class if you enjoy actively participating in discussions. His one bad habit is spending way too long explaining a test or paper and leaving only 20 or 30 minutes for the lecture. Can't wait to take his classes in the future.
This guy is best professor I had. Makes the class interesting, he's funny at times, and as long as you throw in a little effort, you'll get an A. I wasn't a genius, but I got the same A the class genius got.
This class was easy, BUT he is somewhat a hard grader. He doesn't tel you exactly what he wants on assignments. Gives out a lot of B's. You pretty much teach yourself and you're in groups all semester. He is really sarcastic and goes off topic a lot. I received a B and thought this class was going to be very easy. NOT. He doesn't post grades
Beirich is probably the most likable professor in the department. Take a class of his if you're taking a lot of units, because he gives out a very light workload, the lightest I've seen in an upper division class. You are assigned three primary sources to write analyses on, and you choose two. His tests are hard, but he is a very generous grader.
Professor Beirich is extremely cool. His lectures are interesting and not as boring as i anticipated. He tells you what's on the exams so you know what to study. And its important you're there everyday because he takes attendance on random days.
He is a really good professor and funny. I hardly tried for this class and i passed with a solid B. I recommend this professor. I wasn't really into history in High School but he made it fun and easy to learn. 2 midterms and 1 term paper and obviously a final.
He is a really chill teacher, all we really did was watch youtube videos. There were a few quizzes on the rdg. But he often never came to class. That sounds like it would be awesome, but it wasn't since he would assign papers and so he wasn't there to clarify his instructions. he is very vague! hard to get an A. He is a tough grader too!
This is my second time taking him. His lectures are pretty interesting. Class isn't mandatory. No homework. The midterms are easy, he gives you a study guide and everything is exactly the same. I didn't buy the textbook just went to class and took notes just need 2 novels which are like 10 bucks at the bookstore. Laid back class Recommend it to all
We do a lot of group projects. He gives (5?) random pop quizzes too, which I always miss because I have a habit of showing up late to my first class. His exams are fairly easy. You just need to remember the terms and definitions and example of each. Also, be really descriptive on your essays. It is analyzing afterall.
Every time I consider taking a History class, I now check if Beirich is teaching anything. He's just great, and how he structures the class makes it easy and enjoyable. Lectures are totally oral, but feels like you're living in that time. Very much puts things into the student's hands, and more profs should take after his comfortable vibe.
Grade 2 midterms (lowest dropped) + 1 paper +final exam. He's very sarcastic which makes the class laid back but some people definitely would not appreciate his sarcasm. He makes you buy 1 textbook, and 2 autobiography books (for the paper). I barely used the textbook since I focused on his lectures. Reading the 2 books was probably the hardest
2 midterms (lowest dropped), 1 final, and 1 paper on 2 books of his choice. He doesnt take attendance everytime, its random but if you show up late that one day, you dont get the points. Really laided back, funny, lots of sarcasm in the lecture! Talk to him during office hours and talk in class!
Should have taken this class as CR/NCR, after acing the midterms I thought this would be an easy A, most of the grade relies on the paper. He will return your midterm scores but not your final or paper grades unless you probably email him. Lectures were interesting, pay attention as the 2nd midterm and final are not covered in the textbook.
Entirely lecture-based. He only uses powerpoints for visuals, there are no words on it and he doesn't post it online. Easy class though. Just show up, listen, and take notes as he speaks because he's a fun and engaging professor. 2 midterms (1 is optional), 1 paper, and a final. No homework other than to read.
Beirich's 318 Byzantine lecture are somewhat challenging to follow because even though he's explaining it in chronological order, his stories will jump to another topic fast! Your grade will be base off of 1 midterm, a final and 2 analysis paper. Good teacher, just prefer him to walk around and interact more instead of hiding behind the computer.
I took him for HIS 318 he's alright. He'll give you plenty of time to turn in your 2 analysis paper, so take advantage of that and don't delay it. His lecture is okay, kind of confusing because he quickly jumps from point to the next within seconds. Very helpful though when it comes to questions.
Okay professor. Lecture are heavy and rarely provide pictures or PowerPoint overview. If youre a visual learner, dont take him. One simple picture can be based off of one lecture. He goes chronologically in detail but very fast jump from next point to the next. So pay attention. Other than that 2 essay, midterm, and final. Thats the class.
Excellent! Took 2 classes with him. 1 midterm, 2 essay (lets you turn it in at anytime before finals) and 1 final. Your midterm and finals are given to you at least a week before. The study guide is your test, he'll just change the name from "Study Guide" to "Test". Will reconsidered your grade, if he feels like you've improved. (round grade).
Lecture heavy, provide little to no power point at all. He is though btw is very caring and understanding. He pretty much let you decide when to turn in your 2 essay of book analysis (so don't worry about due date of your essay). Midterm/Final he will literally give you the prompt ahead of time to plan before writing it in class.
Not as work heavy as other professors in the History department with 2 mandatory essays on books and a in-class midterm and final. Class is pretty optional as you only need enough notes to answer the essay questions on the tests. Clear/concise feedback on essays returned promptly. Easy B, but pretty hard A, you have to really put in the effort.
Prof. Beirich is a great professor and is well informed on his topic of focus. His tests arent that hard, study and you should to perfectly fine. I struggled because Im a visual person, and his class was 99% auditory. He lectures all class time, but he makes them fun and interesting. One paper, based on the scarlet letter and Last of the Mohicans
If you hate History, take Beirich. He makes it very easy to pay attention, however he does not have powerpoints, so you really need to pay attention during lecture. He also requires you read two books and write an essay on them, which I recommend not procrastinating on! He also only requires you to take one of the two midterms.
He rarely does roll but when he does you get points for it. Pay attention to his lectures cause they're good for his tests. He was okay, just kind of boring.
He is a good professor he seems to be very passionate & know what he's talking abut. Can be at times boring but he's rlly funny. No pp so take rlly good notes. He has you read 2 books & write a paper but he tells you what he wants & gives u a lot of time to do it, just try not to procrastinate! 2 midterms takes the best one and final is pretty easy
Dr. Beirich knows his stuff very well. His lectures can be hard to follow because he goes off on tangents or throws jokes in constantly. Only graded on a midterm, final, and 2 three page analyses papers. He is an easy B but difficult A. Doesn't take attendance. You only need 2/3 three of the assigned books and hardly ever discuss textbook readings.
Amazing dude, can be sarcastic at times though. He does not do power point but instead just sits up front and talks about the Byzantine History. Be prepared to take good notes on what he talks about. Midterm & Final, he gave you the Prompt a week a ahead to prepare yourself. 2 Book reports that must me amazing to get As. Easy B, Really Hard A!!!
What a really funny dude! He def doesn't do powerpoint and often seems forgetful but his sarcasm and laid-back manner makes up for that. He gives you a few essays to write and he's a hard grader but a day of reading and you will earn that A or B. The midterm and Final are quite difficult but overall a fun and medium difficulty class. Go Byzantines!
Very few assignments (three essays) plus a midterm and final. While his lectures can be a little boring sometimes, he makes up for it in his humor and caring personality. Really lax on due dates because he understands how crazy student schedules can be. Overall, a great guy.
His class was great. But he has two midterms and days to take both even if you did good on the first one. You definitely need to study for the midterms. Theres no hw, except one paper which requires you to read two books but it isnt that bad. It can be an easy A if you pay attention, go to class, and review.
Dr. Beirich is one of the rare history professor that won't bored you to death with his lectures. He's honestly is just so chill, joke around with the students, and tell you exactly what he is expecting for the class. Do make a habit of coming to class and write notes of his lecture because it is so so so much more useful and condense than the book
Honestly a very easy class as long as you go to class and pay attention. He does not use power points so you have to pay attention and write notes that will help you with the exams. There are a few papers and exams which are not too bad, just make sure you can show that you understand the material. Do not get the book, just get the 2 for the paper.
he was okay. the absolute worst part is that he assigns a 4-6 page paper on a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the course. this isn't a literature class so i don't get it. there's already so much writing due, so to add this on top makes zero sense.
Zoom class once a week in order to go over material. Requires five short essays (about one page and a half each) that can be turned in whenever throughout the semester. Two midterms but only requires you to take one. Lastly there is a 4-6 page essay that is due at the end of the semester, pretty difficult and time consuming. Overall he is great.
I got an A but this class had more writing than all my 300-level classes! Our class was confused about the Supernatural paper assigned at the end, for it made no sense and honestly just ended up pulling all our grades down. Our whole class agreed that his final points did not even match what was on BeachBoard, which caused even more confusion.
Professor Beirich was so fun! His class was really interesting too. There werent many assignments. Biweekly discussions, 3 analytical essays based on texts, and an essay based midterm and final which you got the prompts weeks in advance. Beirich was very understanding and helpful. He truly cared about his students success in and out of class
This professor is funny and the class was okay. LOTS of papers and two major tests. His lectures aren't important and the last paper on the supernatural really did not seem relevant. He also does not round unless you take the second midterm which can be frustrating for some students.
Beirch is a fun Professor, he personality made it so you would never fall asleep in his class. The class on the other hand was a challenge. 50% of him talking over zoom, and the rest was your own Watching and reading from his posted slides. Discussion post, Book Papers and Exams were okay. Follow what he wants for an Easy B, extra effort for an A.
A lot of writing!!! Exams (3) includes a long essay, and 2 short essays. Assignments: - 5 required discussion posts (@ least 2 paragraphs each) - 5 Primary Source Analysis (@ least 3 paragraphs each) - Paper : 2 required books Paying attention during lecture HELPS, reading ALSO! Get at least 2 assignments done each week, trust me bro!
Very laid back professor; not that many assignments, eamsy grader, one of the best professors on campus
This class is based on his lecture notes. He is a tough grader and is really knowledgeable and passionate in what he teaches. I would take him again if I wasn't graded for this class just to listen about what he knows. It can be pretty interesting. Course was only discussion posts, a few papers, 2 exams and a paper assignment.
This class is NOT hard, just don't miss lecture and take good notes. Ppl on here saying he is a tough grader are dead wrong, he is a fair grader. People are just lazy and don't show up to class, so without knowing the class content obviously they will struggle more with the midterms and the final that is entirely based on what he teaches in class.
His teaching style is not for the common folks. I personally felt off by how he spoke about and the way he talks seems just inconsiderate and just calls you out at times. Homework is fairly easy and the final papers involve reading a lot. Exams are harsh if you make poor essays and or you forgot historical moments. Other than that its an easy class
Take this class if you can make good essays. He gave us 5 primary source analaysis, 5 dicussions post (thank god we didnt have to reply to each other) and two "Midterm" exams, meaning that we can take either or but he recommends we take both exams and yes final exam is mandatory. Class was easy till around april or late march he paper essay but ez
Prof Beirich was very obviously super passionate. The class is overall relatively okay but he grades p tough on exams (mostly papers). Attendance not mandatory but I'd attend the lectures because there are no slides or textbook. I definitely fought for my A but if you show that you're hardworking he will be inclined to give you the grade you want.
Honestly, He was perhaps one of the easiest classes I taken of History. All our exams were graded based on notes we took and how much we memorized. And honestly that's far as he wasnt expecting us to know everything, We did have a final paper and it did require us to read two books and compare them but it was a easy B
Attendance matters!! It pays off to be in class so if you can be there. 3 exams 2 midterms and 1 final; lowest midterm is dropped. A great professor! Discussions and a document analysis is alternated every week. This class is not hard at all just pay attention :)
I LOVED Professor Beirich. He was so sweet and absolutely hilarious and sometimes out of pocket with his jokes, which makes it better, tbh. He's very intriguing, & you can tell that he wants his students to learn. He doesn't have bias & points out current trends and gives us some stuff to think about. defo a top 3 professor
Prof was good at explaining lectures. The topics discussed are very easy to understand if lecture is attended, but he is very precise on his instructions. Work is not heavy, but you must really be detailed on assignments. He was a chill prof overall, 2 midterms, 5 reviews, 1 book review, and 2 final exams.
Really kind professor. Provides great feedback on the mini essays. He does want you to add more to your ideas with the feedback he gives. Only six assignments in total; 3 mini essays, 1 comparative essay, 1 self-reflective essay, and 1 historical analysis essay. Individual student meetings were to show where you are at/how you're doing in the class
He was a pretty nice and chill professor and work was always pretty easy. However, he gets off topic a lot, doesn't put much information on Canvas so you have to go to class to know anything, takes off a few points on assignments for no reason, and he also changed the format of our final exam's focus to be extremely vague and up to interpretation.
Professor Beirich was an overall good professor until he spontaneously decided to change the entire format of the final to an unknown vague essay question, and a multiple choice quiz that was so time restraint, and did not directly relate to the material taught in lecture that my grade went from an A to a B-. Extremely frustrating...
do not take this class I am warning you
The beginning of the semester went well, no complaints. However, after the second midterm, he became extremely unhinged. He went on an AI rampage and began to treat the class as if we were all committing felonies. He accused us all of plagiarism and became unfair with test info. Do not take this class
He was an alright professor until the finals. The lectures aren't executed that well and are pretty boring, so it's easy to skip class for the rest of the semester and he went blabbering about how "everyone wrote down the exact same thing" and all the A.I. stuff. Not even enough time given to take the multiple choice final.
Seemed pretty chill first semester, but second semester was rough. Very passive aggressive and weird humor. Claims we all used AI on final, very odd grader. Would not take this class with him ever again.
