If he says this is important--highlight it-- it's guaranteed to be on the test. He's not out to trick you at all; his tests are very straightforward. He won't ask anything that he doesn't go over in class. I recommend skimming the book and really knowing the notes.
Really nice guy, super willing to help, tests are hard, but tries not to grade too hard, tells you what's important
Go to class. Tells you what will be on the test. Prepare those concepts and it will be easy. Lectures are interesting as well.
He was an awesome prof. He was very helpful and actually made an 8:30 am class interesting. Lecture is the most valuble part of class, he really explains stuff well. He's a great teacher and a nice guy.
THIS IS IMPORTANT! (write it down -- you will find it on the test!) very straightforward and honest about his teaching. Follow your notes and labs, mostly, but READ THE BOOK! It helps. Made class fun, and interesting, but didnt put up with antics. Great prof -- would take another of his classes again in a heartbeat.
Awesome Prof. Extremely understanding, couldn't have asked for more out of him
He was one of the best scinece teachers I've had here at OSU.
Definately tells you what you're going to need to know for the tests. Go over review guide which he posts on Carmen. Seemed like all of the test questions came off those. Kinda boring, tough to stay awake sometimes, especially if you forget to/don't print off the notes before class.
unlike some mol gen faculty, Dr. Booton has a personality, a sense of humor and is genuinely interested in teaching. He’s very knowledgeable and always willing to help. The social & economic aspects he ties into the course are beneficial. The class is geared toward a less intellectual audience and moves slowly at times. the exams require more re
Great teacher. Helpful and clear. Genuinely wants his students to succeed and do well in the class.
Everything comes from the notes that are online, so print them off before class. The lectures on Punnett squares might put you to sleep, but for the most part this is an interesting class.
One of the nicest most enthusiastic profs at OSU. Very clear about what you need to know. The final was definitely harder than expected and he does have a strange grading scheme (making a 95% an A) Overall though I still have to say he might be the best prof Ive had here
He was a really great professor. he told you what you needed to know, but you have to work hard. He expects you to keep up, and even though he does go fast, he tells you in lecture "helpful hints" that will be on his tests. Definitly worth taking.
Class was pretty hard only because of his weird grading system. Other than that, he puts all the powerpoint slides on carmen. Kills trees, but great for studying.
Booton is a nice guy...very laid back and helpful. If you need help go to his office hours. Midterms are hard, but the final is much harder. There are TONS of notes but if you go to class he gives you hints on what to study. Nice guy and good prof!
One of the best professors I've had at OSU. He is able to communicate the material clearly and make it intersting too. Tests are hard, but he does give hints on what to study as reward for going to class.
Good jokes and good teaching ability. Keeps you awake for 2 hours!
Nice and helpful. Powerpoint based class but read the book for more in-depth understanding. Midterm and final are difficult but he does give hints sometimes.
I didn't find him as good as everyone else. He is an alright lecturer, but glosses over important topics very fast. His tests are straightforward and not too hard. Tons of notes to memorize.
Very Fair! Go to class...bonus points for going. Book only useful for examples, don't bother reading it. Straight forward exams...STUDY NOTES & what he tells you! Interesting class, and nice guy. Def rec this Prof! Final is a lot of studying, but it pays off.
He really wants you to go to class by not posting grades and only returning tests in class, and handing out bonus points one class period during the quarter. Unfortunately lecture is boring and fairly useless bc when it comes to test time you just memorize tons of notes and the book actually is good at explaining difficult topics. Ok class.
Damn difficult subject matter but a great prof
Booton was a great teacher, but MG500 is the most stupidly organized class I have ever taken. 5 midterms and a final, plus a 'bonus' module that isn't really bonus because the cutoff for an A is 95%. Don't do the hw or activities, just memorize the Q/A's from the online practice exams and you will do fine. Class wasn't difficult, just a lot of work
Terrible class. However, it is relatively easy to get an A. This professor does not focus on truly teaching his students. Rather, he relies on "Self Evaluations" to get you the grade you deserve. Truly terrible professor and TA. Just utilize the Self Evaluations, memorize the questions, and you will get the grade you want.
This man is a moron. He can't teach. Just the get the easy A and get out of there.
Conceptually intensive class. He does not really "teach" and goes over important concepts for too quickly to really understand. Students like myself without internet access at home and no way of utilizing the genetics learning center because of family obligations are at a HUGE disadvantage in this class. Extremely disappointed.
I don't see how this is an "easy A" as some other people said. WAY too much to memorize. 18 chapters covered in 10 weeks and he expects you to be able to regurgitate it all with a "module exam" every other week. The only reason for going to lecture is for the free participation points from clicker questions
Bad, bad prof. Its not so hard to get an A, but you are your own teacher for this course. It's so hard to imagine this prof has tenure. He only covers brief concepts that are tested. You need to treat the book as your professor, because Booton is useless. The TA was really rude as well (Monica Crary), a really nasty person.
Not really sure what class the people below me are from, but Dr. Booton was an awesome prof. He is extremely interested in the subject and helping people throughout the quarter. Of course there is a lot of info to know - it's a 500 level class. But he makes it EASY by letting people retake exams and even offering extra credit. If you can, take him!
As previously stated, this class is a joke and Dr. Booton does nothing to improve it. One can easily get an A by memorizing the test answers since you are given the questions ahead of time.
want an easy A this is the class, i'm not going to complain because when you apply to grad/medical school they have no idea how easy it is, all they see is a 500 level class with an A, gpa helper. Yes, all you have to do is memorize the questions but you don't get the answers, so it helps to go to class and read the book to have the correct answers
Yes, this class is a joke, I learned nothing. His lectures are useless for the exams, and you have to go to get your attendance points. Yes, you can repeat the exams, but you have about 100 or more questions to find answers to and memorize within a week or 2. Clicker points are stupid, go to him if you think it's not working, he won't give them bac
One of the best professors at OSU in my opinion. I learned a TON, and I come out with a new found love for genetics. You get out of this class, what you put in. His lectures are highly entertaining, and he has a great sense of humor. He also cares about students which is an added bonus!
Dr. Booton is a great guy and very likeable and friendly. However, is lectures are a tad pointless and his exams cover trivial topics, even though he swears they cover the broad topics (they don't). Offers extra credit and lots of points for during homework and showing up to class. Not bad overall.
Super cool guy, great sense of humor. Find someone with an answer packet from previous exams and memorize every question - THEN try to read the slides. Lectures are pointless but mandatory for clicker points. I studied a lot for this class and managed an A. Some of the exam questions are not addressed in lecture. Not bad overall.
class has 5 midterms, and a final. His lectures are pointless, he just reads his slides, but you have to go for clicker points. He gives a limited test bank, but no answers and 40 pts bonus. The class is manageable, but not highly recommended. The textbook isn't necessary as he mainly tests on lecture material, but you will need Mastering Genetics.
I was really excited to take this class at first, but highly disappointed in the end. Attendence is mandatory (even if you are sick and have a drs excuse he will not give you pts) The book and slides are useless. Online mastering genetics work is required. Exam every other week, Cum. final. The way to pass is find answers online. Horrible course.
This class is harder than most say and there was NO BONUS offered. Exams test beyond test bank questions so be sure to understand the lecture material. Sometimes concepts not emphasized in class popped up as short answers on the exams. This class requires more work than what people say but you get out of it what you invest into it. Good luck!
Terrible professor. Seemed very uninterested in helping me and his lectures were boring and pointless. I learned nothing from his class. I had to teach myself the material because he did a poor job. Avoid this professor at all costs!
This professor is a horrible one I have ever seen in my life. He is lecturing to him self not to people welling to know and understand the material . His slide are useless and very confusing. You can not follow his lecture with the slides you have because simply he does not post all the slides, so the slides you would have won t make any sense
Super boring class. Do not waste your time studying lectures, just study the test bank and memorize it.
Tests a lot from non-lecture material. Half of exams are from quiz-banks but other half comes from thin air. Tediously go over lecture slides for that A. Said he doesn't curve, but still got bumped to an A.
Probably the most boring class ever. I had to take this class for my major but would never take it again. There's no reason studying the lecture notes b/c the exam questions are not from there. Go online and study/memorize the test bank that other people have made. That's the only way to get a good grade in this class.
He liked to talk about the weather.... I didn't like that.
Do not depend just upon online quizzes for questions. He will pull questions out of no where. Puts short answer questions about the random tangents he goes on, so be prepared. Never is interested in helping me learn, always short and uninterested. Read the chapter in the book, helps you at least recognize some of the terms that are not on slides.
Out of all of the bio-related professors at OSU, Booton is by far my favorite. Exams can be hard & he does test on items he doesn't talk about in the book, but he lets you know that in the beginning. His lectures are interesting and he engages the class. It is a lot of studying but it is manageable.
Memorize the test banks. I found myself regurgitating information I didn't understand and did alright. His "midterms" come ridiculously late in the season with one RIGHT before finals week. He's interesting and likes teaching but gives WAY too much information and likes to pull questions out of thin air.
He is director of the department.. meaning he's not obligated to curve a certain way. Although his curve prior is said to be 2-3% usually. I finished with an 86% before the curve and received an A (93+). Google homework, attend all classes for clickers, and recognize what he thinks is important. His weakness is just that. 220 slides 40 areimportant
I don't understand all of the decent reviews for Dr. Booton. He is easily one of my least favorite professors. He is not helpful at all, I try to email him and ask him questions after class and he just stares at me. Also good luck studying because you'll study for 40 hours - get to the test - and realize that he pulls the questions out of thin air.
I'm guessing that Booton got sick of everyone passing because things are much different than before. There is no test bank. There's homework, self-tests and review material. What's mostly covered by the test is covered nowhere in these. Lectures are nearly worthless except for the clicker points.
This class was very difficult. There was so much to memorize. His exams would have almost half of the material that was not in the textbook or on the "self evals" or homework... You may find that you studied really hard and still are not prepared for the exams as some of the questions on the exam he pulls out of thin air.
Dr. Booton has a great enthusiasm in the class. However, this class was one of the worst I've taken. You barely learn anything because you have to memorize most of the material in order to at least do average on the exams (which I thought were really hard). Lecture is a waste of time and the exams questions felt like he pulled them out of nowhere.
This class was a great place to develop skills in managing a heavy information load and studying effectively. Go to lecture and take notes on your laptop - many test questions can be answered straight from the ppt's. Take as many self-evals as possible and LEARN the material - blind memorization is what makes questions seem "out of thin air."
This was a very hard class. My advice is to aim to get near or exactly perfect on the homework, clicker points and on the assignment so that way you have some what of a nice cushion. His tests are not from lecture so try to memorize quizlets or find a test bank and memorize it. That is what I did and I ended up doing well in the class
TAs are very hard graders. For 2nd exam, I got an A.I put that EXACT same level of detail on the 4th exam and final and did much worse. My grade dropped from B+ to B- because of those 2 exams. GET TEST BANKS they're NOT the same as quizlets. Ask students who took it years ago and memorize all slides for each module. That's the only way to do well!
Prof. Booton clearly knows his stuff. Lectures are thorough and he constantly hints at what to expect on the test (usually meaning what might be an essay question). Tests were hard but he curves! DO SELF EVALUATIONS. They are exactly what is on the test, word for word. I don't see how people get a bad grade in this class.
Booton is great guy. He is very knowledgable in his field, however, he goes too fast and does not give you enough time to take notes. Read the slides and look at test banks to do well.
Molecular Genetics isn't my forte, but this class wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. It also wasn't as easy as I was expecting in the areas I already knew either. Reading the book is highly recommended, and studying often is too.
This class would not be bad if Booton didn't test the way he does. His tests aren't about learning the material or the concepts he hits on in class, they're about memorizing his test banks (i.e. self evaluations) this is the only way to do well in this class.
The test bank makes this class relatively easy as long as you prepare well. But beyond that, the class is wonderful. Dr. Booton is a fantastic professor, one of my favorites. He is passionate about teaching and about his research. I recommend taking the honors 4500E along side it, very interesting and a grade booster for 4500!!!
I liked how he's really approachable and passionate about his field. The only thing I didn't like was how he teaches so much material at once. The only way to do well for me is to mindlessly memorize the self evaluations. This class uses tophat and Mastering Genetics which are grade boosters.
Dr. Booton is a really nice guy who is clearly very passionate about his field!! The material was interesting, but unfortunately the structure of the exams was not conducive to actually learning it. To do well, you had to just memorize test banks of exam questions. There is a generous curve at the end even though he said there wouldn't be one.
Difficult class, but very interesting. Clear explanations. Absolutely use the practice material before tests
Dr Booton is a really nice guy and gives interesting lectures. He so clearly knows the material and likes to incorporate what's currently going on in the field. It's really interesting to learn from such an intelligent guy. On top of this he is extremely guy, easily approachable, and helpful in all ways possible.
This class was the worst class I have taken in four years. Lectures are insanly long, tests are "based off of the practice exams" but then he pulls questions out of thin air and expects us to pull answers out of thin air. Class is a waste of time but yet you have to go for top hat. You learn nothing becasue all you do is memorize for the test.
Dr. Booton is passionate about what he teaches and lectures in an engaging way. A lot of what he discusses in genuinely interesting. Unfortunately, the exams are not set up in a way that encourages learning. Test questions are pulled from banks of questions that are saved in Carmen, some of which are based on material that is never discussed.
Despite being a native English speaker, Dr. Booton has the poorest communication skills I've seen. He spends very little time on material important to the class and more time discussing news. Test questions are worded so vaguely that many answers could be correct. He will only accept one or a few. What is taught doesn't match what is tested
Booton is passionate about teaching and the content, but 4500 was prob my least favorite class I've taken. A LOT of material with specifics you need to know for the exams (which are every 3 weeks). Test banks make up most of the exams, but memorizing them isn't conducive to actually learning, which is unfortunate. There is a small curve at the end!
Dr. Booton is brilliant; however, it almost seems that hes too smart to be teaching intro level bio. He flies through the material so quickly that you wont have time to take any notes. He also always says you should already know this even though its bio 1. His tests are also extremely specific & there are many application questions.
Basically just do the practice test questions until you get them all right.
Absolutely terrible prof. Spends 90% of lecture reading news articles and little time explaining basics that matter. When he does teach, talks too fast. Test is purely memorizing the test bank. Did not need to take this, but wanted to learn genetics. I was incredibly disappointed. I have not learned anything meaningful.
Very disappointed in the class. I really like the topic of molecular genetics, but did not learn anything useful. Tests covered material not taught in class. Only way to do well is to memorize the questions from his self-evals, and the test bank is so big youll still get questions you dont know. Didnt learn anything.
Online discussions are a component of class. I came from a small regional campus so a class of +200 was a big change. He explained the material well and made the content very interesting and relevant to modern day events.
He is a great professor and explain everything crystal clear. The lab is interesting and you need to understand materials to write papers. He gives good grades! And he is approachable and patient to students.
A very passionate professor, but goes on and on about things that will not be tested. The testing style is super convoluted. He is smart but going to lecture was useless. Booton makes an already tough class unnecessarily more difficult.
Lectures very fast paced. Only taught second half of semester, definitely harder half (but it was genetics). Clearly knows his stuff but moves very quickly at times (100 slides per lecture). Exams are fair and out-of-class work is minimal. Studying for your last exam will be tough, though. Final exam not cumulative. Tophat questions for credit.
Take this professor!! I was skeptical at first, but he truly makes a positive impact on students. Interesting lectures, extremely knowledgeable guy, and by putting in the effort you'll do well. Highly recommend doing many self-evals & memorizing them/knowing main lecture concepts. Dr. Booton is probably my favorite OSU professor!
This class was much more work than my 5 credit science class -- this class should either be less intensive or more credit hours. The slides are very outdated and formatted poorly, the exams include stuff that we never came close to learning, and you had to teach every single thing to yourself. He would get annoyed when students asked for help.
The class is interesting and Dr. Booton conveys the material clearly. He genuinely cares about student success. The lectures are fast, but he provides his power-point presentations as well as "self evaluations" (practice tests) which makes it easier to succeed in this class. There's ample opportunities outside of exams to boost your grade too.
Gives 4 exams before the final, one every two weeks. He flies through the material, maybe 100-130 slides per 55min class. He gives you practices exams (do them as many times as you can) on Carmen. He pulls test questions from the same test bank. I found the grading to be difficult, annoying at times. If you do the work you will be fine.
During COVID19, this professor did NOTHING to help his students. Every other professor helped me out considerably while Booton only got rid of an exam (thus getting rid of 100 more points for the semester). The final was challenging and barely anyone finished all questions on time. Also, the avg was too high so there was no curve in the class.
Honestly, with the COVID-19 pandemic going on, classes became easier because professors became more lenient with the situation. Booton however did not, and all he did to compensate for the pandemic was remove 1 exam from the 5 total which did not help us at all. The final was rigged for no one to finish in time and yet no curve was implemented.
I didn't really love Booton's lectures. Really dry and sometimes the in-class assignments were super challenging, same with the Tophat questions. The midterms were difficult but reasonable (you really have to study). I enjoyed the topics discussed but I wish he was more energetic. Gives opportunity to make up pre-lecture credit with study modules.
You can really tell that Dr. Booton enjoys teaching and he really tries to keep it interesting for students. He is also always trying to help his students and he is accessible if you need help. This class was difficult when it came to exams, however. There is a lot of material covered in each lecture and tests are heavy on memorization.
Its a hard class. You HAVE to study and keep up with lecture material. But honestly, if you do the practice quizzes AND review lecture material, the tests are fair. Dr. Booton is very caring. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Going over the material with him helped me to get an A in the class. He wants students to succeed, you just have to put in the work.
Dr. Booton is by far my favorite professor at Ohio State. Although the class was online this semester he still made every class enjoyable and is just a very kind person. He really wants to make sure you understand the topic and will make sure the class is on the same page before moving on. He was a great help and I really enjoyed him! So sweet
His class is hard but he is a great teacher. Tests are fairly straightforward and easy
If you ask questions there's a good chance he will find your question stupid. There are a few students he simps for but he always treated me like I was dumb. I guess you have to come to office hours for him to respect your learning efforts. He is very unhelpful and listening to his lectures can be incredibly discouraging.
Dr. Booton taught the second half of my lecture which was pretty hard to adjust to after having a different prof for the first half. His lectures are very dense and it was less clear with him than with Dr. Picking what we needed to know for exams. Overall, he was a good professor and he is also a very interesting person.
Synchronous lecture classes. Lots of assignments due before every new module. One project in the middle of the semester. Uses Tophat for attendance often but even if you missed a few lectures you get full credit. Pretty kind. Majority of exam q's straight off the practice exams so do those multiple times.
Very boring and repetitive lectures.
Super caring and patient professor. He has a lovely tone and is willing to re-explain slides in another way if you ask. Exams were tricky, but if you use the module self-evaluations you'll do fine. Gives a few weekly assignments per week so you can average a B/B+ on exams and still get an A in the class.
Im not sure why his scores are so low because I thought he was an average/good professor. He was really kind and incorporated funny things into the lectures. He does go fast, but its a STEM course after all. Tests are pretty fair and he offers to help often during class and office hours. His grading scale is different too which made it easier.
he goes through slides so fast and does not explain them. he goes through 100 slides a day and the slides do not always make sense. i spend most of my time confused in his class
So the first time I took MOLGEN4500 with Booton, I failed the class. When I passed, I sat in the front row. To study, I converted the practice exams to quizlets. Exam questions are pulled right from the practice quizzes. Booton also will get to know you if you sit up front and really likes student interaction. Also yes, his office hours are great!
Dr. Booton is very knowledgeable and willing to help. He provided plenty of practice materials to help students succeed and provided strong feedback on answers. I felt grading among his TAs was inconsistent in terms of points deducted across questions. Each lecture easily contains 80-100 slides with repetitive information.
Dr. Booton is a decent professor and he taught the material well. My biggest issue with him is that his problem sets fell out of sync with the lectures so we couldn't usually even begin the weekly homework until the night before it was due. Also, he uses TopHat so attendance becomes part of the grade.
Prof. Booton is a great guy and fun to talk to. However, his class is difficult with how he sets it up. Each module has about 4-5 lecture slideshows and each one is easily 100-150 slides. He lectures quickly and it is easy to get lost if you miss something. He gives you unlimited practice exams which is the only reason I am passing this class.
Dr. Booton is a highly engaging lecturer who truly understands the field of genetics and all it entails. His lectures, while they had a lot of slides, were interesting and highly applicable to today's world. Does assign a lot of homework and exams were difficult. Do the practice exams he provides - they are a great help in succeeding in his course.
Practice exams will definitely help but exams are still pretty hard. I'd recommend taking his recitation 4500E as it's a grade booster and not that much extra work(and a good way to get to know him, he's a very nice guy). Lectures were kind of hard to pay attention and certain concepts I felt he explained fast/poorly. He tries to keep it engaging.
Dr. B provides the materials you need to succeed, all you have to do is use them. Go to his office hours, get to know him, and take all of the practice exams. If you do good on the module exams, the final won't be stressful. He also provides a lot of in-class points so make sure to attend even if it isn't required.
His lectures are very heavy for example the first module was over 700 pages. He gives you practice exams for the actual exam. Here is my problem he tells you to generate 6-9 of those practice exams. Which I did and still on the actual exam all the extended response weren't on the practice exam. Just be prepared to be disappointed.
The worst teacher I have ever had in my 16 years of education. Lecture chapters > 350 slides and completely disorganized. Clusters of mass information are projected and exams are given every two weeks. I taught myself the entirety of the semester. With a 89.4, Dr. Booton would not round my grade. No curve even though he states it in the syllabus.
Not much work outside of keeping up your lab notebook and lab reports. Exam was easy enough, though there wasn't any practice to prepare for it other than him verbally giving some practice problems in class. A lot of waiting around for the experiment to run though so it could be fairly boring
Dr. Booton was really great. I took his course over the summer over 8 weeks, so it was really lecture heavy, but it was not unreasonable. Dr. Booton explains tings really well, just make sure to come to lecture consistently.
Professor Booton is passionate about the material but his lectures can be fast-paced. Practice exams are crucial, and using tools like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helps cement the concepts. With effort, you can do well in this challenging but rewarding class.
Dr. Booton is a great professor. He goes over a lot of slides in a short period of time. The self evaluations are important to gauge your understanding and be ready for the exams, at least the multiple choice portion. This class can be stressful. However, you can finish with a good grade if you put in the work. I'd recommend this course—MCAT.
An absolute nightmare. Bro's slides are so messy and aren't at all detailed. No notes or study guide offered. Practice evaluations are offered but honestly they weren't helpful at all because you have no idea which 5 out of those 30+ questions he'll ask. Glad I don't have to retake it.
His slides are unorganized and difficult to follow with well over 100 slides that he speeds through. He does provide practice exams, but they don't fully line up with lecture content. He isn't understanding or accommodating in emergencies. Only reason I did well was by going back through lecture recordings.
Dr. Botton is very knowledgeable and understands what he is teaching. He goes through many slides during lectures at a fast pace, but lectures well. Exams will have the same type of questions as the problem sets, so focus on those when studying. Doing well on problem sets matters; It will affect your grade by 10+ points.TopHat is used during class.
