He's such a good teacher, but you have to study. Study & you'll love him
GREAT TEACHER, but: lots of studying and homework, cant miss class, weekly quizzes.
REALLY anal, egotistical, can't show up 1 minute late to class or miss a single session, unclear, weekly quizzes.
Very demanding teacher.Hard exams and a lot of homework.Big on lectures, puts you on the spot. Need to study hard to do well. If you like to study a lot you will probably like him.
very nice guy, interesting lectures, listens to students. lots of homework, lots of quizzes, exams are tough and will take points away for tiny mistakes. i BARELY managed an A...dont take if you want a blowoff class
Good teacher. You will probably understand the stuff if you ask him, he knows alot. But his lecture is the way too boring. For the smart kids, you can still get an A in his class, but go for someone easier, he demands too much.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Makes lectures interesting and makes sure the class understands. Highly recommend!
Very good teacher. He is very clear about what he expects from students. No surprises! He makes sure you know where you are in the class by posting lists with your grades. If you want to understand Accounting, this class is for you.
Great teacher, tells you what you need to know, all you need to do is pay attention and do the homework and the course will be easy.
Thought he was very tough. Homework counted for like 10% of the grade but he never passed it back or told your grade. You have to memorize all of the worksheets. Lectures well and if you want to learn he is a good teacher.
one of the most helpful and caring professors you'll find at smc. if he knows you want to succeed and you put in the work, it will happen. strongly recommend.
DO not take him,I repeat do not take him, cz u will FAIL.Very strict u have to b on time all d time .EGOTISTIC,Know-it all and always reminds dat he work for FOX and ERNST&YOUNG.QUizzes and finals are really hard.LOTS of HW (5 hours).DO NOT TAKE HIM
if ur worried og ur GPA do not take his class cz u will struggle.U do a lot fo hw but only counts 10% more hw than tests and only 10%? yeah ull struggle.TAke sombody else.ULL regret to took his class.VERy strict on everthing
A very helpful considerate prof. He is very clear about what he is teaching, and gives students the chance of asking questions. Considerable HW did help me master his lecture. His class is demanding, but students do learn something from it. Highly recommend.
Unannounced quiz, never late even for one minute, due homework at the beginning of the class.. his class is good for anyone who's majoring accounting coz he is harder than any acctg instructors in smc.
Very responsive to emails; mostly responsive to posts (online class). Didn't properly update homework/quizzes to reflect new edition of text, but managed the problem well. On the picky side. Average.
very good if you want to learn something if you dont want to learn dont take this class because it is a lot of work
I took this class really interested in accounting. I got an A in accounting 1, and I needed to drop this class. I got a D on the first test and I studied very hard. The class is difficult because you have to memorize all the worksheets and formulas and the tests contain a lot of information. He's very strict on attendance
very clear, but since he is so clear, expects you to do everything he tells you to do. he tries to turn you into a real winner.
He may be great in the classroom, but avoid this guy online if you can. He's rude, unhelpful, and just plain mean!
This teacher is too strict and is not flexible!!!He doesn't make any compromisses! If you want your teacher to be flexible, don't take his class!
**** worst one!!!! seriously!!!!!!!!!!
I do not recommend this professor. He cheated me out of an A, and wouldn't budge when I pointed out that he violated his own syllabus. The one time I emailed him with a question, he claimed that that it got temporarily lost. This class requires a lot self-study. Don't count on this professor for any help. He's an arrogant man in my humble opinion.
The worest person I ever saw. He likes to see you fail in this very very very hard exam. On top of that he is mean and hard grader. He doesn`t care for your grade at all. he stops u from success. He doesn`t deserve to teach here. Don`t take him!!!
NO!!!!!! DON`T LET RUIN UR DREAM FOR THE GUY HE DOESNOT CARE ABOUT U. HARD GRADER, GIVES HARD EXAM. NO ONE EARN A AND HE SEEMS HAPPY ABOUT IT. DON`T TAKE HIS CLASS.
He is arrogant, doesn't know the material, backtracks, lies, is not respectful of others but expects your respect. He goes back on his word. He thinks he knows everything and he doesn't "teach" me anything. He doesn't lecture, he expects the class to do the lecture. No examples are used, and he is vague in almost everything he says.
I also took Acctg10B online with him. I liked his class. I learned a lot. He is strict, but if you do all your homework and study very hard for your exams, you will be fine. He is a professional and well-experienced professor. Better than the ones don't even know what they are talking about. I got A's in both 1 and 10B. Not easy but very helpful!
I found this class very difficult. The only reason I've received an A was from discussion forums, homeworks, and quizes which boosts your grade. But the difficulty forces you to study harder and more. However, expect to be on your own. Your questions aren't answered soon enough or sometimes not at all. My emails were not responded.
I read what a lot of people said about Professor Brookins. I must disagree - he is an excellent educator. He uses acronyms, repeats important stuff, and wants participation from his students so that they will have a better understanding of the material. He really knows his stuff. Yes, tests are hard but what do you expect in an accounting class?!?
He is very clear about what he wants from his students. The class may start a little bit difficult, but it gets easier later on. if you want to be acctg major, you must take him. he explains everything in great detail...make it impossible for you to not get it.
He kills my 4.0 GPA. he just makes the complex thing more complex. A good professor sure bring the students into the accounting world, not killing their students interest then keep them out. I got up at 5am twice a week to review the stuff, then still get a B.if you want to pay a lot and gain little thing, highly recommand him.
Seriously he is not a good professor. He confuses you when he explains a topic, yeah he repeats it but its useless especially if you don't know what he is rambling about. Acct is already hard but on top of it, he NEVER tells you what will be on the tests, his idea of reviewing for a topic is "study everything" that's not hepful, I DON'T RECOMMEND!
fair teacher with extra credit
He just keeps you out of the accounting world!! He never explain the concepts clearly. There is no difference study at home by yourself or attend the lecture.
This guy is a complete prick, lacks any common sense, never has time for his own class but expects you to drop your whole world for it, and treats his students like babies. THIS GUY IS A PRICK. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. DO NOT TAKE THIS PRICK'S CLASS!!!
I liked his classes! though I fell asleep a lot. Took it during winter, attendance is very important, lots of pop quizzes, two exams, one cumulative final. Homework is super impt too, have to be consistent. Really not that difficult. Very willing to help and explain to his students! Extra credit points on his exams. Got my A.(:
He is an amazing professor and mentor. He will not only help you get through his class if you ask for help, but he will help you reach your goals. His class is not the typical boring calculating class. I got into USC with the help of his class!
He is one of the best teachers I have ever known. He is strict, but it helps students studying and understanding the materials. If you want to get an A without studying, don't take his class. He explains the concepts until you get it. It's up to you to ask.
Now, as I am taking Intermediate accounting class, I am trully appreciated what professor Brookins has taugh me in ACCT1 class. If your major is in Accounting then you must take his class. He's an inspring teacher and willing to help students. His class is fun and very interesting.
a very very nice professor! he explains as many as you want until you get it. the quizzes are pretty hard and tricky, but the problems on the tests are not really if you go over the material and do the exercises. do attend every class, coz he might give you extra credits. got my A. thanks, professor! :D
My favorite professor! After getting my BS and learning from UC professors, he has taught me so much more than any of those professors did. I love how organized and patient he is. He explains things super well and always willing to explain it in as many ways as needed so you understand it. I wish I could take all my acct classes with him
I took his accounting 1 class online. It was extremely difficult and hard to understand. I had to work very hard to maintain a C. Le me just say, I am not a C student.. If you enjoy learning on your own then go for it. He is not bad, just the class was very difficult.
He is a fantastic professor, probably one of the best i've ever had (i graduated from ucla). He will break down things in simplistic form, using analogies that range from sports to personal life/experience until you understand. He made the class fun and engaging and I have learned so much from him. He is a very funny guy and I really like his humor
Hands down best accounting professor at SMC. I've taken LU, Hanson, Carballo, HAIG, and Resnick, out of all the upper accounting classes, you will learn the most from him, this is because his tests are hard but very fair, but that encourages/motivates you to study hard. the other profs are too easy IMO, i come from a UC for reference.
Do not take this him if this is your first accounting class or you are not accounting major. I took him in the winter and ended up dropping. He does not help those who are struggling, no study guides for tests. Very hard grader and moves way too fast.
Brookins is an effective and professional instructor but he is very demanding. Getting a C is considered good in his class.
I took his class for acctg 2. It was very hard but I passed by a C. While I'm not happy about the grade, he is a great teacher for accounting. I even changed my major because of him. Take him for seriously.
The best professor in SMC, always there when you need help. Very caring person. Took both acct 1 and 2 with him. Would recommend to anyone who really want to learn some real accounting.
For the quizzes, READ the book and do the LearnSmart questions on Connect. The quizzes are similar to that. Listen to his lectures and if there is something he repeats at least twice, you can pretty much bet there will be a question on the quiz. For the tests, the homework problems would be what the tests are most similar to.
He teaches his class like he's preparing you for the real world. Show up on time for class, put in the effort on homework, use his office hours for an extra resource (he's very willing to meet and talk), and you'll do fine in the class. He makes you work for it, but is very fair and wants his students to do well.
Great teacher, but you really need to work hard.
Great teacher who really cares about the material and the students. However you have to care enough to get that experience. No free lunches here!
I took his class Acctg 2 online last year in Fall 2016 and I have to drop it. I only recommend you for taking it ONLY if you are not working Mon - Friday. Most of the tough HW were due during the week days. There is no chance for me to work on during weekend. I felt everything was too rush for me and I couldn't really absorb and learn.
You will learn a LOT. He is great at explaining and making sure everyone understands the material. Expect a quiz once a week and online homework assignments that are actually helpful. His midterm and final are exactly like the homework. It is a tough class but if you stay on top of things and see him if you need to, you can get a good grade.
My favorite teacher as he genuinely cares about making his students understand the material. He truly wants everyone to have earned their grade. I had to work hard for it and I ended up with a C. I have straight A's in all my other classes and I'm actually happy I even passed this class.. Recommend him! He will prepare you for the real world!
He is a good professor and I would definitely take him again but your midterm and final carry a lot of weight. He also give a lot of homework which isn't hard and good for free points. for his midterm and final he words the questions much differently from the homework and textbook which makes it very difficult test. in my class 20 people failed.
Excellent professor!! Difficult course but he is really good.
I love Professor Brookins. He is a tough grader but if you put in the effort you will actually leave this class understanding basic accounting. He was very helpful and I truly enjoyed his class.
Professor Brookins is an awesome teacher. Gives really good lectures. Highly recommend reading the book before going to his lectures and you will do fine. At beginning I wasn't reading the book and would get 6 out of 10 on weekly quizzes. After I started reading I got 8 or 9 out of 10. If your major is Business/Accounting you will learn alot.
This online Accounting 1 class is difficult and challenging enough; add to that you're taking it ONLINE. Follow YouTube video lectures as you move through each chapter. Spend AT LEAST 15 hours per week for each chapter, minimum. Do that and you position yourself well; anything less than that you may struggle. I got an 'A' but it had to be earned.
Prof. Brookins is an excellent professor. He was able to answer any and all questions the class posed to him. More importantly, however, he was able to explain topics in a way that didn't confuse everyone yet still effectively communicated the point. He cares about his students and their grades, utilizing office hours and recommended tutors.
Prof Brookins has high expectations of his students. He gives clear explanations and analogies during lectures. I like how we have topical quizzes; it helps me understand the chapters so much better! Easy A if you are hardworking; make sure to listen in class, do all the assigned work and discussions. I've got 100% for both my MT and FT exams!
Brookins was one of the nicest and most caring professors I've ever had. Show up to class, read the textbook and listen to his lectures and you'll pass.
Was not an easy class. Quizzes every week, lots of connect homework and then the midterm + final. Gives a lot more work compared to other accounting professors. If you other classes are easy then take this, otherwise you will be swamped with work and left with not enough time to prepare. Professor is very caring and will help you if you reach out.
Hands down one of the best professors at SMC. Will take again a million times. If you do your work you'll be able to land an A.
I took his accelerated course. It's straightforward and simple if you a) do your reading in the beginning of the module/course-week and b) have a strict schedule where you do the reading first, then the interactive presentations/HW, quiz, etc. There's a lot of material, but he works with you if you need help. Whatever you do, don't fall behind!
Honestly one of the best professors in SMC!! Super caring and experienced. You will learn a lot in his class. I dont know why others say his class is difficult?? A is easily achievable if you listen in class, study diligently, and submit all your assignments!! Ive gotten 102% for his ACCTG1 class and 94% for ACCTG2...
Acctg 2 I thought it was going to be really tedious online but Professor Brookins was amazing. He is really caring and always makes sure you are not falling behind and very accessible outside of class if you are not comfortable in class. He gives out a lot of extra credit and work is very doable as long as you put in some time into it. TAKE HIM!
Professor Brookins knows his stuff. Gotta love his sense of humor. Attendance and participation is mandatory to pass. Note-taking is important. He is a great encourager and everyone should take his class.
I love this professor because he is SO good at explaining topics. I never would have thought that accounting would be easy for me but with Brookins, he makes it SO easy. Also if you have any questions, he always responds to emails or messages. If accounting intimidates you, TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
This professor was challenging for sure! Zooms were early, and he expected participation and had quizzes very frequently. If you put in the work you will receive an A, but definitely stay on top of things! Easy to get behind, but the professor is very kind and always willing to work with you.
Had to work EXTREMELY hard for my A. Assigns quiz, homework, smartbook, and discussion weekly. Spent 4-5 hours on homework, over 4 hours daily preparing for quizzes. Quizzes are a large portion of grade, along with final/midterm. An A is doable. I feel prepared for accounting 2, if you want an easy A this is NOT the class for you.
This is the second most difficult class I ever took at a junior college. I have a BA from UCLA. 40 - 45% of the class are failing the weekly quizzes. I know this because the test score statistics are given after each test. I have given 100% since day 1 and I cannot pass the tests. I do ~10 hours per week to studying and completing homework.
Lectures are hard to follow, filled with not funny analogies that make no sense - work load is ridiculous compared to other professors - weekly smartbook and homework assignment, discussion boards, as well as quizzes. You must participate frequently or you get a 0. He also refuses to tell you what is going to be on the exams - passive aggressive
Very knowledgable professor and genuinely cares about how much we learn. One of the few classes at USC I felt challenged in and walked away feeling knowledgable about the material. Definitely have to study very hard to perform well on quizzes and exams. They are very detail-oriented, so you must read. He is ridiculously harsh with participation.
All assignments and quizzes are on Connect. I highly suggest doing the Problem B practice problems in the book for each chapter in which he provides an answer key for. Watch the videos he made for each chapter. DO THE PRACTICE QUIZZES!!!! You will not fail this class if you do all of the above.
He uses Connect for hw, quizzes, and exams. Took him + another class for winter and the work was doable. Definitely recommend utilizing the Summary Cheat Sheet in the textbook for each chapter & completing the practice assignments (optional) because they prepare u for the quizzes/exams. Discussion boards are extra credit. His videos are helpful.
Good opportunities for extra credit on the discussion posts, grading criteria is well laid out. Quizzes and exams aren't super easy but nor are they difficult. Homework can get tedious at times but is not difficult at all. Super easy to get a hold of too. 100% Recommend! He really does care about his students and it shows.
I RECOMMEND taking Professor Brookins class, every time we went over different subjects he would ask us if we needed more help or if we have any questions. The workload and quizzes are doable, most students drop the class because they don't attend class and fall behind. If you do miss a class you might be a bit confused, so make sure you attend!!
Expect a quiz every week that is 10 questions multiple choice. Can be frustrating because the questions may be specific or feel like 2/4 answers could be correct. 1 midterm not too long and final thats a little longer. mid and final are never multiple question**. 2 homework assignments a week that take about 45 minutes each. Definitely review them.
He is the best accounting teacher I have ever met. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credits, just take your time and participate in it, and you will be fine. His grading is fair, he is focusing on your working processes. He will give you partial credit for the right process. Take his class if you want to be successful in accounting.
Great professor!
Professor Brookins is a great professor! He is passionate about the field and teaching, you can tell he cares about his students. If you show up to each class, study for the weekly quizzes, and keep up with the homework you will do well. LOTS of extra credit available. Can't recommend him enough.
Mr Brookins is a fantastic professor! His lectures are in-depth, and his passion for accounting makes class enjoyable. He provides a ton of extra credit, so take advantage. However, some people struggle with this class if they're not keeping up with readings before lectures so make sure to spend equal time studying outside of class :)
Such an amazing professor. Funny, understanding, and engaging. This class is easy if you put the time in and read the chapter. I recommend an irl class and just read the chapter and take notes/do the homework and you'll be good. Exams are graded kindly and help is available.
I took both accounting 1 and 2 with him, both ended up with 95+ One of the best professor I've ever met! A lot of homework but also a LOT of extra credit opportunities. 1 quiz, smartbook, 8-11 homework problems per week. You have a chance to get 2 points of extra credit
Professor Brookins is an amazing professor! He gives lots of extra credit opportunities so make sure to take advantage of it because every point counts. There are weekly multiple-choice quizzes, but they are not hard if you complete the homework before you take the quiz. His grading is fair and he gives you partial credit for the right process.
If you don't have a religion, pick one and start praying
