I wish humanities two lasted all four years with him teaching!
Sounds like Phil Hartman! good prof, though who knows how we are graded?
Cool guy, but hard class. He is very passionate about his subjects.
very easy class... spark notes is an awesome resource so you don't have to read many of the books
You will learn a LOT, great environment too.
cool dude, makes humanities interesting, very enthusiastic!!
One of the best lecturers I have ever had. Very cool guy who really knows his material. Not a particularly easy class, but an enjoyable class.
Very good professor, engaging lectures. Informative class, and easy tests.
Quizzes are pretty easy but the tests are hard. Very enthusiastic about subject and definitely knows what he's talking about.
Awesome teacher. Makes lecture interesting. SPARKNOTES.com for all books but one! Easy quizzes and GREAT grading scale!!! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!
Awesome prof. Know's what he's talking about and enjoys teaching it. Interesting class, test's medium difficulty, quizzes easy(use sparknotes). Take this class if you can.
Very good professor...I enjoyed coming to class everyday. Quizzes were easy, test were challenging, but well worth it. I would recomment taking this clas for sure!
I loved his class! He tells history like a story and keeps you intrested. He's been my best history teacher.

He is a great teacher. Tells the best stories to keep you interested. Made history fun.
Great prof!! He loves what he teaches, so he is so interesting. Quizzes over books are pretty easy--you can read sparknotes. Tests are kind of tough, but he has an amazing curve... for me, a 79 raw score turned into a 97.5% for each of the tests.
Really nice guy. Have quizes over books, but read sparknotes, will do well. Tests are impossible, but the curve is so awesome, you don't even need to study. Good teacher to take.
Even though I slacked off in his class, he was a great teacher and always willing to listen to any questions you have. I love him!
This guy is awesome! You HAVE to take him if you can. You can read sparknotes for his quizzes and even though the tests are kind of hard, his curve is amazing. I missed 13 and still got an A!
GREAT PROF!
Awesome professor. Good sense of humor.
I really wish I had taken him for Humanities I. He's one of the best professors I've had; very enthusiastic about history. Lectures are fascinating, though his jokes can be pretty lame. Quizzes are unchallenging; tests are pretty simple, too, but you learn a lot from this course. Awesome professor!
I think he's funny and keeps it interesting! test are something else but he gives u study guides if u ask :D
I thought he was the best Humanities teacher ever. If you go to class and take notes you will do fine on the tests. He has little quizzes that are easy to get %100 on and help your grade. Plus he's got an awesome sense of humor.
takes atendance, notes from bell to bell
He actually makes history interesting, which is an amazing thing to do. He presents everything in a really great way and makes it really easy to understand the crazy**** that went on. Plus he's totally hot! He needs to leave his wife and come to Mexico with me!
He is a good teacher and is definently one of the best ones at UNI for Humanities II, He explains well and is halarious on some of his jokes for people being persecuted in the protestant reformation. Great teacher, look no further for HII, just study a lot for the tests and you should be fine.
There are a lot of notes and it's lecture the whole time but he's funny, upbeat, & he makes you want to learn so it's very boring. The tests aren't extrememly easy, partially pay attention in class & review your notes & you'll be fine. Take book quizzes- you can't get less than 50% & they are easy!
I loved having Bruess as a professor, even though he lectures the whole time it is pretty easy to pay attention because of the way he talks and changes his tone. Tests are pretty hard but his quizzes are easy. Take him for humanities and you wont regret it!!
He is a very good teacher, he knows what hes talking about. I didn't enjoy the class at first but by the end its my favorite. His tests can be hard, you just need to write down everything he says and look over that. I would def take him again though. Very nice guy, lectures aren't boring
Great Guy, and he is really funny. He knows what he is talking about and makes it clear in class. Take-home essay tests can be kind of hard but not impossible.
He is a great professor that doesn't make things complicated. There are a lot of notes, but you don't have to read that much of the text and he's a nice guy. If or when you take humanities, do yourself a favor and take hime.
I loved him! He is one of my favorite professors by far. Makes history very interesting. If you come to class you'll do fine! Take him!!!
Great guy! Make sure you take very clear notes. There are a lot of notes but you can easily clarify what he is stressing. I would take him over any other Hum prof.
Great guy, extremely interesting, go to class and get an A.
a stand up comedian that teaches a history class!
Good class. Like everyone else has said.

Hes very cute and does a pretty good job of trying to hold your intrest. if you go to the classes and read the assigned books you should get atleat a B if not an A

Reminded me a lot of Quentin Tarantino. Very talkative, informative, and excited. Had a great time. Plus, totally hot.
He made Humanities SUPER easy! He gives a clear review for his tests. They aren't hard, he grades on a curve, and the final is not comprehensive. You read only 5 super short stories and the quizzes are at most worth 15 points. There are a few extra credit points, especially due to the curve. He's funny and conversational. Really great prof!
He is hilarious and keeps class as entertaining as history can be! He makes random sexual innuendoes alot and is quite entertaining. His tests are all multiple choice and are easy if you go to class; quizzes over the books are tricky- you'll want to remember names!
He keeps it interesting. There are only 5 quizzes and a few tests. The quizzes are really easy and the tests aren't bad if you study a little.
Who cares if he makes stupid jokes and gives freshmen easy quizzes in humanities? Stay away from his other classes.
He is way funny and would recommend him. Tests aren't that easy... you have to study. Overall lectures are interesting and sometimes get extra credit just for showing up.
He jokes around a lot, and as long as you go to class and study the tests will be easy
He isn't very clear on his tests, they are extremly hard and he doesn't give you a good idea of what the test will be about.
By far the best teacher that I've had. Cares about all his students. The best history teacher in the department hands down. Funny and smart.
I would like to marry Dr. Bruess or someone like him someday. He is very intelligent. His lectures are very detailed, and if you pay attention and do the readings, you will learn tons. But this class is not for sissies.
best lecture prof i've had in a long time. he's entertaining and pokes lots of fun at students. very easy quizzes. you take about 35 pages of notes before each test and it takes a long time to study it all, but the tests are fairly easy.
Don't listen to all the fawning fans.
His tests are not easy by any means and this is not a push over class. But if you want a prof. who is fun to listen to and makes history intresting, he's your guy. Most of the books you read are on spark notes and quizes are easy. Very easy to listen to and truely does care.
I thought he was a good teacher, Some of the lectures got boring. His tests are all mult. choice. To do well on the quizes over the books, you acutally need to read the books. Over all I would say to take him, he's a pretty nice guy.
very fun professor, keeps class interesting. gives automatic 50% on all tests and quizzes. doesnt go over books in class, but quizzes are fairly short and simple.
Very hard pro. for this class. I had him for others and he was way different and easier but still great at teaching you things, just go to every class and take good notes, you should do ok if you listen to him!!
As a UNI graduate who has moved onto graduate school, I think Dr. Bruess is one of the best professors I had during my time at UNI. Even though it was a gen ed, I had an interst in the subject beforehand; however, the class was extremely easy. Bruess makes it even more easier. I pulled an A without much outside effort. Take the class!!!
Freshman humanities students should really not rate professors so often, there is a big difference between your lame humanities class and the other classes the professor teaches.
I'm a history major and have had many different UNI history Profs at all levels and I would say that Prof. Bruess is one of the best. His class isn't easy. You have to study and read the books, but he is a great guy and is always willing to help. Mix of ques. from text and notes. Great Prof. I would say take him!!!
Doesn't have clear expectations.
For a humanities class I would definitely suggest him. He's a very good speaker and is good at keeping your attention through his random jokes and energy. He curves the tests and quizzes, and they aren't too tough. You get what you work for.
I liked this class and would recommend people to take his class. His tests are based off in class notes and the reading. He gives you study sheets and follows syllabus dates most of the time. He is knonw to push back tests and quizze though. You are required to read 5 books and take a quiz on them. You have 2-3 between each book.
Bruess is a great prof! I would highly recommend him. He knows his stuff and he is willing to help students learn. Take his classes if you can! It is an amazing experience.
Bruess is such a stud. I hate history but he makes it interesting. He is very sarcastic and entertaining. He knows his stuff very well. His tests are fairly hard. He hands out study guides. Just studying the guide you will get a C on mosts tests. Read the book and go over the study guide to get A's on the test. I recommend this class.
He is a good teacher that knows a lot about the past. He does lower your grade after 5 attend. missed but is fair. He is vry strict to his sylabis but hes also a funny guy. Creepy that he knows everyones name in a 120 person class however. Tests are easy as long as you do a study guide. I thought that he was pretty unapproachable after class howevr
difficult if you don't go to class, but easy if you take notes and show up. Puts outline up to help follow along with notes
Bruess really knows everything about history. He is great if you have a question, although the tests can be challenging. An A is attainable if you read the book thoroughly and take good notes. There are about 4 quizes and 4 tests. The quizes are pretty easy if you read the books.
Really great professor! He has a very good sense of humor. He presents the material well and is easy to understand. Requires some outside reading and a lot of memorization for tests, but the study guides he gives are very helpful. Take him if you can!
One of the best professors I've ever had! He makes his lectures fairly interesting and funny. I went to his office for help and clarity about part of his lecture, and he was extremely friendly and helpful. I knows me by name and says HI Alex everytime I see him in passing on and off campus. Tests are difficult though a thorough studying of the note
Awesome professor, knows everyones name in a class of 130 students. Curves tests, hard to get bad grade, and quizzes are extremely easy. Also has great sense of humor and makes jokes regularly to keep your attention. Very friendly
His tests are HARD...his class was pretty boring! However, he does grade on a curve..which helped my grade a ton!
His test are really hard, but he grades on a curve! I would have probably failed the class if he hadn't curved but instead i passed it with a B! I recommend taking it with him because he knows alot of information and will take the time to explain it to you if you don't understand.
Tests are difficult and you need to study to do well. Quizzes are easy if you read the book. He makes class as interesting as it can be with jokes, etc. He curves all tests and quizzes.
Outstanding prof. Very organized and easy-to-follow lectures.
Class was pretty easy... I didn't go a lot of the time and still did fine... most of the quiz books are on sparksnote
He has long lectures but if you use the book with the notes you will do fine. Quizzes mostly on Sparknotes. Hard tests, but he grades on a curve. Good Professor overall
I took this guy's class about ten years ago. I must say he was the best large room lecturer in my college career. He gave very challenging exams. My advise: attend all classes, read the book and your notes and A is possible.
He is a good humanity class professor, especially when there's 200 people. If you read the book and notes, you will be just fine.
Awesome guy. He's very helpful and keeps you awake during class. You do have to take good notes and study, but he's awesome and I recommend him!!!
He is brilliant and is very passionate, but you have to read your book and notes. Gives study guides, so fill them out for the exams. I got a B but only because i barely studied. Great professor
For being a Humanities class, it was good. You need to read the books for the quizzes, but the tests aren't too hard.
Tries to make class fun and grades on a curve.
Took Greece Capstone and really enjoyed the class. Lectures are long and tests arnt easy but you cant get below a c. Would recommend the trip.
You can tell that he is very passionate about what he teaches. You really need to pay attention, take good notes, read the material (especially for the quizzes) but if you study and pay attention you'll do just fine. Do NOT get caught with your phone though, or he'll call you out.
Professor Bruess has a great sense of humor and his lectures are lined with it. Parts drag, but he does a decent job of keeping it lively. His tests are hard, but he gives you a good review sheet each time.
Tried to make class fun and grades on a scale, which really helped me out. Read books for quizzes and study your notes for tests. Not too bad.
He has a great sense of humor and makes the subject interesting. Some sections are can be rather boring but he does his best. The tests are hard but he gives you a good study sheet. If you know all the vocab on the study sheet you will ace the test. He also grades on a curve.
know it all teacher. Thought he was funny but isnt. He said some stuff that was not even true. He takes attendance everyday and has assigned seating. Dont use your cell phone during class because he will drop you from the class. Tests are impossible but all multiple choice.
Amazing! I thought this was going to be one of the worst classes because I wouldn't like the content. However, it was my favorite class!! You have 5 quizzes which are really simple if you actually read them. The test are extremely easy if you fill out the study guide. The people who are saying it's hard obviously just didn't study! Take him!
Before this class, I did not like history. He makes things fun and interesting to listen to. He sometimes talks quietly so it can be challenging to hear from the back. The quizzes for the books and the tests are easy. You get 5 missed classes before he starts docking points.I made sure to get into his class next semester, thats how impressed i was.
I really like having class with him. There are no papers to write: your entire grade is based on a couple tests and quizzes over historical books, which he raises everyone's grade. He is pretty interesting to listen to in class compared to other Humanities professors I have heard about. I'm going to take my other class with him as well.
Good professor! Wayy better than Dise! He's interested in what he's talking about, occasionally funny. The quizzes over the books are a piece of cake. He grades on a curve. Tests were challenging, but not impossible. You can have up to 5 absences. Come to class, its all he tests over!
He is a great teacher. Need to attend class to get all the info. test are hard, but he skews them. go over notes and read the text.
I took humanities 3 with him the semester before this this and I took 2 with him this semester. He keeps the material interesting and he's funny sometimes. His quizzes are easy and the test are hard but not impossible if you go to class and fill out the study guide.
Take class with him!!! I got an A and it wasnt that hard. Just go to class and you will do fine. Test are hard but he skews the grades. Book quizes easy. I am totaly taking class with him again.
best teacher in the world! his test are hard and dont use your phone but he is great. took him for hum 2 and 3 and plan on doing capstone with him... he is just awesome!
Had for Hum 3. He is very interesting to listen to, but it is sometimes hard to keep up. Best strategy for tests is to define each term/know as much as you can about each term beforehand. Book quizzes are quite easy. He helps and answers questions well. Class is mandatory, for good reason- the test is almost all lec. notes, but the book also helps
The most intelligent man I have ever met. I don't care for humanities but I loved to listen to him speak. He makes it so interesting to listen to and he is a very generous grader. Love him.
Bruess was a interesting speaker. Even though lectures every day got a little boring he did a pretty good job keeping the material interesting. His tests were a little tough with lots of memorizing, but a good curve helps
Very smart man. I did not like the class itself, but Bruess made it okay. His tests are extremely hard, but he grades on a skew, so it helps. Heavy reading class. Expect to put a lot of time into reading both the textbook and the reading books.
Interesting class. Tests are very hard but puts a nice curve on it. Has quizzes that are short answer and tests are 70 MC. He was my favorite humanities professor though that I had.
Awesome professor. Tests and quizzes are hard, but he puts an awesome curve on it. Gives a lot of good information. Highly recommend him for Humanities.
He is the best professor I've ever had and is hands down the most interesting to listen to. You can tell he loves what he does and that makes it so easy to listen and pay attention. He cares about every student and will learn everyone's name. I recommend him so much and will only take Humanities class with him. He is great.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Tests are ridiculously hard, and study guides are pointless. You can look over all of your notes and read the textbook, and still none of the questions on the test make sense. If you value your GPA, do not take with him. No help whatsoever, and I'm afraid to ask questions because he makes people feel stupid for asking.
Tests are extremely hard, but there is a nice curve. If you show up to class and pay attention you are going to do fine. He makes the lectures interesting and knows what he is talking about.
Loved this class, it pushed me to change majors to history. He made it so you didn't want to miss class, and easy to ask questions. Do the work and go to class and you will do fine.
He's one of the best teachers I've had. Your grade reflects on how much work you're willing to put in his class. His lectures are super easy to follow and very organized, he's very enthusiastic and loves teaching humanities and makes the lecture enjoyable. Listen, take notes, and study well and you're sure to pass!
Bruess is a funny guy and keeps humanities about as enjoyable as it can be. Quizzes are fairly easy, tests are quite hard, but he has very generous curves. It's hard to predict what is on the tests, but I found review lecture notes was about the most effective. Recommended!
lots of notes but if you can keep up it is extremely entertaining and he keeps it extremely interesting, if you like lectures you'll love this class and the workload isn't huge you don't even have to read the book since he goes over everything in class
Humanities III with Bruess was a tough class, but he makes it enjoyable. He's very friendly and enthusiastic. His lectures are genuinely interesting and entertaining. Tests are very difficult, but he curves very generously. Four quizzes over books can be aced with only Sparknotes, and attendance will raise your grade. Would definitely recommend!
Attendance mandatory and the readings are complicated. If you attend class, you will do well. Make sure to take detailed notes though.
This professor was just ok. You can miss up to five days which was nice, but he talks the whole class. His power points make no sense!! You take a lot of notes! He makes horrible jokes to women and religion, I usually could follow his stories either. He is funny at times, but you have to read a lot of big books. Tests and quizes are hard.
Best lecturer on campus. Holds your attention, material is absorbable, and keeps the mood light with a few added jokes. If you can't detect the sarcasm in his voice, you must have issues. Attend class, read the books, make an effort to study the study guide and you will do fine. This guy's courses are definitely the way to go for LAC Humanities.
I took both my humanities requirements with him because he is stupendous. It's all lecture, but it's engaging and fascinating, and he's sassy and very intelligent. Some books that are not at all hard to read, and four tests that you should study for, but aren't bad either. Super-recommend; humanities aren't great, but this is the best way to go.
Took him for Hum II and III. He makes lecture slides available online to print before class but after Hum II I found that it helps me pay attention to take notes from scratch. He's interesting to listen to but its hard to catch everything he says sometimes. Tests are hard but he curves. Didn't buy the book, just studied from notes and pulled an A-
What can I say about Dr. Bruess? He's amazing! I always used to hate history, but he made it fun and interesting! He's hilarious, looks like Lewis Black, and is just the coolest professor you will ever have.
I loved Humanities II with him! He is hilarious and is really good at keeping students engaged in the lecture. As long as you show up to class, take good notes, and make somewhat of an effort to study, this shouldn't be a hard class.
Don't do it! The paper criteria is unclear and feedback is terrible grading is arbitrary at best.
Randomly picked Professor Bruess for humanities 3 and intentionally picked him for humanities 2. He had extremely interesting lectures since he is an amazing story-teller. Text book was completely worthless, however the novels are a must read (recommend spark notes as a supplement not replacement). Hands down my favorite professor at UNI!!
Your tests are 3000 word essays and you will have a quiz on the books he assigns. Other than that it was a great, likes to joke in class with a dark sense of humor, excellent discussions, willing to expound on anything taught in class i.e. asks before class starts if you have any questions. Will run over time a bit, but its worth it.
Dr. Bruess's class was the hardest one I've taken within the history department. He is an amazing lecturer but you will only be graded on two book quizzes and two really tough papers. He gives you clear guidelines for the papers but they don't help to know what he is looking for. He is very personable and always able to answer questions.
Professor Bruess is a very nice professor, but a very tough grader. Thank goodness he "skews" all of his tests because they are very difficult. He at least tries to throw in some humor to make his lectures seem less boring! He wasn't terrible, but he was one of the harder professors I've had for Humanities.
Prof. Bruess is awesome! He makes his lectures at least somewhat interesting with humor. I never opened my textbook once, and I took all my own notes because his powerpoints don't really help at all when studying. The tests are super long (like 70 questions) but they're all multiple choice. Hoping to take Humanities 3 with him next year.
Great professor!
I cannot say enough good things about Professor Bruess. His lectures are incredible and enganging, and he is hilarious. He is also very helpful in his office hours. Don't be on your phone, or he will call you out in front of everyone. Book quizzes were easy, however I found the exams incredibly difficult. He HEAVILY curves them tho. Take him.
One thing Bruess doesn't realize is that a majority of his students do not care for the subject being taken and he gives a boatload of work he expects to be done in less than a week. He doesn't understand that most of us do not care for the class and are only there because we have to be. We aren't history majors so don't treat us like them!
I loved his teaching style, really great about answering questions.
Bruess keeps things interesting for Humanities. He usually slideshows to go with his lecture. Given 4 test and 6 book quizzes throughout the Semester. Given 5 free absences, on the 6 you lose 6 percent off your grade, and one percent more for every absent after that. Easiest humanities teacher I've had, although the classes get long.
Class was all lecture he tried to make it enjoyable for the students though adding in humor. don't buy the textbook it's unnecessary and a waste of money. tests are challenging so def study for them. I also recommend reading the assigned books as the quizzes ask quite specific questions. Great class if you're up for a bit of challenge.
Pre-Covid: Gives you 4-5 free absences, but after that you'll be docked points. He's fun and makes lectures interesting. Must take notes and read the textbook if you don't understand. There are several quizzes based off short stories in novels and there are unit tests that will be hard if you haven't read or paid attention.
Has an excessive number of long lectures on Ponopto that are hard to follow. Tests are extremely specific to small details in lectures. Would spend hours studying only to be asked about something that seemed of little importance or relevance to the topic. Only gives you 45 seconds to answer each test question, making it very difficult to do well.
Although the HUM class I took was online because of COVID Professor Bruess provided Panopto videos with lots of information. You can tell he loves teaching history. There was a textbook for the course but the information I got from the lectures covered the information needed for most quizzes. There are also book assignments for each unit.
My class was online so it was very self-led, but he posted Panoptos for each unit that were extremely helpful. Don't necessarily need the textbook since he covers most information in his lectures. It's obvious he loves teaching history. No exams or final, just short quizzes over each unit (about 8 in a semester).
I took Humanities 2 with Bruess completely online and it is NOT worth it. I have no clue if this applies to the in person class, but we have multiple quizzes and tests weekly of which we are required to watch 8+ panaptos in order to study enough to pass the quiz.
If you have a chance to take humanities with him, definitely do it. It is completely lecture based, but his lectures are amazing and funny. The only assessments in the class are multiple choice quizzes, which are easy as long as you pay attention. Also you do not need the textbook at all, you only need the required readings.
Professor Bruess is my favorite professor so far. While attendance isn't mandatory, there are details he talks about only in class that show up on quizzes, so it's good to show up. There are a few readings with quizzes as well. Only 10-20 questions each quiz and it's timed. If you do the work assigned and go to class, you should easily pass.
Bruess does his best to make class lectures interesting. The slides that he posts don't help you much, so you should be going to class and taking notes, but it isn't the end of the world if you skip. The only thing you're graded on is the unit tests and the book quizzes which were pretty easy, and he tends to curve grades a bit. No final.
Dr. Bruess cares about his students and is knowledgeable about Imperial Russia. He is just a bad lecturer. This wouldn't be bad if he utilized other forms of teaching, but all he does is lecture. It gets worse, as the only two major grades in this course are 10 page papers which can only use lecture content. If you hate lectures, avoid this guy.
Lectures were long and boring. We had 2, 10,000 word essays that were used instead of tests. The directions were unhelpful and confusing. I choose not to take the second section of his class for this reason. It was fine overall but boring.
Prof Bruess was my favorite professor this semester. Truly loves the material he teaches and it shows. Understanding and flexible. Not a history major but would take more of his classes because he's a great professor
The professor is truly passionate about the material. Very understanding and flexible. While not a history major, I'd take more of their classes - they're a great teacher. Used unstuck study for study prep and found it super helpful.
