very difficult, you have to know everything about everything!!!! Be prepared to study your ass off. Too bad he's the only micro teacher haha!
had to drop this class... you cant miss a day at all, you will be sooo lost! I actually enjoyed the lab while I was in there. Corpus needs a good micro teacher, he totally changed my mind about being a nurse.. I chose business.
This guy thinks he's God's gift to the sience world. He's too smart for his and your own good, and he will try and make you fell stupid the first chance he gets. Go to Delmar and take Micro there it is much easier and you actually learn something.
If you want to learn take his class. Pay Attention, Take Notes, Do Extra Credit! If you are gonna complain about how hard he is then you dont want to really learn anyways!

No surprises, just listen to the hints he drops. I read my notes and each summary of the chapters for the exams the night before the tests and I got an A in there.
Awesome prof but hard if u dont like to go to class (and even though there maybe 200 peeps in there he knows u by name - 1st and last)

Slackers need not apply!!! He is tough, but fair. My FAVORITE PROFESSOR ever. He does not sugar coat anything...Had him for micro, med micro, virology and...hum...i forget....something else.
He says he's not Dracula but he still sucks blood.

He made this class so ridiculously hard, that even the people that were doing "well" had D's. Then he just did a huge curve. I went from making all A's to making a freaking D because of his type k multiple choice.
If you have no other classes and can dedicate your whole life to microbiology then take Dr. Buck. He really knows his stuff and is probably too intelligent to be teaching where he is, but he is going to make you feel like the biggest retard. Don't think you can hide bc he will remember your first and last name even if he only meets you in the hall one time. Dont take this class if you have any other commitments bc he expects you to be an encyclopedia of microbiology. Type K multiple choice sucks!!!
He is very hard, only because there is a lot to remember and his tests are almost unpassable if you don't know all the material back and forth. He is a great teacher though, but it is very hard to get a good grade in his class.
He is extremely smart...and hard. I went to every single class and still managed a D somehow. He does know everyone by name, first and last, within a few weeks of class. He expects you to know too much for the average bio student, maybe because he teaches mostly upper level courses??? I dont know, but I do know that his type k tests are what got me.
Even though his tests were hard and he expects his students to know too much but at the end one really learns out of his class. Its impressive that he will remember your first and last name with in days. To read ahead in his class would be a smart thing to do. Ask questions if something is not clear and take advantage of his tutor. Form study group
EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HARD! He likes to make himself inferior to "students". Extremely smart, just likes to make himself look better than you. He calls on people whenever he wants to! His teaching style is more intimidating than anything!!!!
Dr. Buck can be intimidating, but he is honest and if you show him that you are trying in his class he will notice. If you skip class and dont show up he notices that as well. He expects a lot out of his students because we are college students and a lot should be expected.
It helps if you paid attention and learned all the basics in Bio 1 & 2 and Genetics. If you can, take the class at Del Mar. Dr. Buck is not intimidating at all, he just makes sure his students are on top of their game, and asks questions relating to the lectures. He practically tells you what will be on the exams, and has an awesome tutor, so ex
Dr. Buck is a pompus, snobby punk. Minus the fact that he snickers and then involuntarily snorts at your questions, he loves to give you a doctorate level answer. His test are unreasonably hard, with absolutely no curve. Class averages are in the low 40's, with no curve. As he puts it you get what you get and the numbers dont lie.
Buck is hard to pass, but he's a great teacher. His type K tests can be really difficult if you don't show up to class and go to tutoring. He has a habit of remembering who you are and where you normally sit in class, so there's no escape. He forces his students to actually learn the material. No data dumping allowed! Very difficult, but rewarding!
His class is hard but it is possible to make an A. The lab grade does help you with your grade in lecture. The tests are not that hard. It is true that it is type K but after the first test you will be able to pick up what type of questions he ask. The final is important because that will determine your grade in class.
Dr. Buck is a fair prof that expects very highly of all his students. His tests are hard but not impossible. His classes will not be a cake walk though. But at the outcome of his class you will have actually learned the information rather than as he likes to say "make a data dump."
Buck's class is tough comming out of freshman biology!!!! Make sure that you pay attention to the lecture notes (they make up a good part of his exams) and suppliment your lecture notes with the TEXTBOOK so that you know how to fully understand and apply the knowledge he wants you to know for his "type K" exams. Good LUCK!!!
Too many whiners. Yes he's tough. Yes they're type K. He does a sliding scale based on the mean and standard deviation. Go to class, take good notes, study his test reviews, maintain "C"s on the exams and and A in lab, and you'll get at least a B, probably an A. Very nice guy, articulate, and knowledgeable.
He was very hard but didn't throw any curve balls. His tests are Type K but if you take notes in class, LISTEN, and do just a little reading in the book you will get it. You either know your stuff or you don't and it's not his fault if you can't keep up. The material is hard and he's setting you up for future classes maybe even in grad school
Take notes well. read text before and after class. know your notes like the back of your hand. He will call on you in class. Will know everyone by name. May throw curves on test. know all taxonomy of organisms. memorize handouts, all of them. Show up everyday, he may quizz for extra credit. Puts lab info on tests. know lab material for lecture.
Stresses superfluous details (that might come in handy...in a game of Jeopardy?) over concepts on exams. Memorize backwards, forwards, sideways, and diagonally, and devote ridiculous amounts of time to memorization of tiny details, and you will do well. Would not advise taking this with Ochem or Genetics at the same time.
Dr. Buck is downright hard. That said, you really earn your grade. The lecture is fast paced and the lab is intensive, but you get to know the material well. Dr. Buck is extremely intelligent and very helpful. This guy has skills. People who do not work get bad grades; if you do "work" you should get a B. A's are very difficult , but possible.
Dr.Buck is very intelligent, both in his field and in many other unrelated fields. His class is difficult but it is not hard to find help from him or SI sessions and I am learning more from him than I have from anyone else.
OK Dr. Buck I have taken him three times in my college career his classes are demanding but were science majors get use to it. Notes are important and even though you may get a C take it and run. You will always feel like you learned something which I love even though my GPA takes a hit. If lazy dont bother, if crazy do take class lol
I loved this class. If anyone has ever asked me what class shows the perfect class I would say this one. Buck makes the class interesting though the exams are KILLER. Lots of detailed work required. Take notes in class and go for any extra credit you can get. No words can explain how great Buck is though. One of my favorite prof of all time.
this guy's test are really hard
Great professor and all around person, accepting and answers every question. Study your notes!!! And go ask him about various bacteria, they are covered heavily on the test.
By far my favorite professor. Dr. Buck is insanely intelligent but not pompous. Calls on people in lecture every day. He genuinely loves what he teaches and helping with anything you are having trouble with. Take good notes! Write down things he repeats multiple times. The type K tests are killer; when he says you can't cram for it, he isn't lying!
I find it pretty humorous that students complain about how difficult he is, but expect to become neurosurgeons at Mass Gen some day. His classes are demanding, but Dr. Buck gives you every thing you need to succeed. He really does know what he is talking about. He makes you work hard for a reason. Put the work in and you're grade will reflect it.
The class is hard, but the worse part is being called out on the daily in front of everyone. If you are shy and quiet be prepared to hate this class. I dreaded going because he likes to put students on the spot with ridiculous questions.
If you have a job, a life, or any other classes while taking Buck's class be prepared for the most stressful semester ever. Our final was over 13 chapters and we were given a review which was all but helpful. Unfortunately I must take him again along with about 100 of my fellow students. Of a class of 160 on 12 A's were given. Avoid if possible
Although I did well in his class I do think his class is a bit ridiculous. The information is not difficult to learn and NO MATTER WHAT BUCK SAYS memorization is the key. He is a little man on a power trip at the end of the day.Don't let him intimidate you.
Dr. Buck is a very nice man but when it comes to his tests, he doesn't give anyone mercy. Take notes, read the handouts he gives,ATTEND CLASS, and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! or you are already setting yourself up to fail.
Dr. Buck is a very knowledgeable man. He wants to teach his students, but I believe he just does not know how. He presents his material in a way that can only be memorized; there are never any concepts presented in the lecture. And his test can be over anything, I mean anything, you will see stuff you have never seen on these test!
If you are a biology major, take my advice. Do *not* take micro at A&M with Buck. He is very smart, and a likeable person; however he seemingly strains to provide the most difficult tests at every possible level. Not as tho he is challenging you difficult - but rather his tests are full of the absolute most random pieces of info not at all relevant
Quite possibly the most difficult professor I have ever taken. Had to study my ass off just to pass. He makes his test nearly impossible to pass and focuses on the minutiae. Offers extra credit about 5-8 times and lab will help to save your grade. The class average on the final was 86/200 questions. Have a job or a large course load? God help you!
Gregory Buck: Great Proffesor. Greater Friend. This man will surely be the best professor you have ever had, he makes his exams difficult but he does it because he cares about you learning. Did I mention he was smokin' hot?
Most influential educator in my life. Had for Micro, imuno, medmicro,& viro. Hands down most entertaining, approachable and challenging professor ever. You will learn, you'l sweat, you'l bleed, cry, whine, get angry and frustrated with his tests, BUT, you will laugh at his goofy ass and you will find out if you have it in you to be a science major.
best prof eva!!! and funny 2 made me laugh evry day. i wish i could take him agen.
Don't take a hard course.Keep up with the material every class. Go to the SI sessions. Questions from the book that aren't in his notes are low yield (1-2 per test). Reading still helps you understand the material better making it easier to memorize. Get the handouts down as soon as you get them. Use mnemonics on the bigger lists of bacteria/fungi
Amazing professor!
Dr. Buck knows his stuff but he was HARD! Study everything...if he takes the time to mention a small detail from a diagram in the book or something specific not in the book during his lectures make a note of it and study it for the test because he will ask about it. So glad I passed with a C and did not have to repeat the class
sit in front if possible...its better to be closer to hear him and get his full attention.Attend every class. Read before every class.Go to his office hours if something was confusing in class.make flash cards, read the handouts and power points more than the book. form study groups! other than that you should do fine I received a B!
read the chapter before class and revise your notes after. the material is not difficult its remembering and putting everything together that is. just remember its not going to get any easier if you are a bio/pre-professional major.
Dr. Buck is probably one of the best professors I've ever taken. He's hilarious, engaging, and RIDICULOUSLY smart. Don't skip class, study your ass off, pay attention, read the handouts, maintain a AB in lab, and you'll be fine. I hardly ever read the book and went to 2 SI's all semester, & I made an B. Bruce was my SI and he was horrible.
The questions on the exams are different from what you study from lectures
Dr. Buck is in my opinion a great professor. He is tough, and his tests are savage. You will need to work hard to even pass. However, the material is not hard, but there is a lot of it and its your job to connect it all and memorize it. Also, Dr. Buck's knowledge may be intimidating at times, but he is always happy to help.
Dr. Buck is VERY intimidating! His class is tough. There is a lot of information and if you want to pass, you're gonna have to put in work. He WILL call on you in class, but it's because he wants you to make connections and learn from your mistakes. He is always willing to help a student learn and he wants to prepare you for the real world.
Dr. Buck is a genius of a professor. The Micro class was challenging yet fulfilling. Be prepared as he will call you in class. He wants his students to be on top of what's going on. He is very approachable and will answer questions to make sure his students understand the material. TAMUCC is lucky to have a gem like him.
As anyone will tell you, the class is challenging and will require you to dedicate some time in advance to study and to truly learn the material. If you are thinking you want to become a pre-professional, Dr. Buck is the way to go. He will challenge you and will give you a test of what will come in the future. Dr. Buck is an great professor.
It's not that Dr. Buck is a hard teacher, he just expects more out of you. If you show him that you come to class and go to SI/office hours, he will help you out. He has an immense knowledge of microbiology and I'm glad I took him. Read the handouts thoroughly before class, as well as the powerpoints.
Buck was a good professor, its super funny watching walk into the room with his dramatic flare. He was though a hard tester and a hard grader. You need to go to class to understand his PowerPoint, just reading the material alone wont help. The SI's didn't really give an advantage. My advice is to watch a ton of videos on the material, it will help.
Yes micro with Dr. Buck is a challenge but do-able. Great teacher. He gives you handouts(pop quizzes!!!) to help you. PowerPoints are long but he'll tell you what you need to know for test. He's approachable after class if you need any help. Book not mandatory but advised if you need a more help; may or may not help your grade.
Dr. Bucks class is EXTREMELY difficult. The man is a genius, and he settles for nothing but the students best work. He will learn everyones name and remember if you're in class or not. You will not get by in this class without doing a ton of work, but if you want to learn micro and pass the mcat.... you should take Buck.
Dr. Buck is a great professor. His classes are hard but not impossible. Grades are calculated on a point system. He tells you after every exam what grade range you fall into. He really wants you to succeed but will give you some tough love if you need it.
He tells you to much information to study from. Not all of his exam questions come from the lecture or handouts. Reading the textbook is pointless because he barely uses the information from there. The exams are his main focus and he does not gives enough extra credit points. His exams are type K and multiple choice.
This was probably the hardest class I have taken at this school, not only that taking him for Medical Microbiology was my first experience with this professor. So his first test was a bit intimidating when all the questions were type K, but study hard, focus in lecture, and you will gain a wealth of knowledge, for whatever class you take.
Buck is nearly unavoidable if you are a biomedical major. My advice is lean into it and do the best you can. Go into the course knowing that he is unfair, he will try to trick you on the tests, and he will call you out during class. Generally, there is a much better way of teaching the material he covers. Sometimes he is amusing, so there's that.
I took Dr. Buck for Immunology. Its a difficult subject but he teaches it in a way where you can understand it. He gave TONS of extra credit this Spring.
Bucks got a great sense of humor and teaching style. If u pay attention, you'll see how much he cares about teaching. Find ourself a good study group, and just stick to his powerpoints. Memorize wht he emphasizes. DONT brush off the pop quizzes, those can SAVE ur grade. If you dont like getting called on, VOLUNTEER to answer and he won't call on u.
Information overload. He gives out too much information and the tests are difficult. One test question had 10 choices to choose from. He calls on students for answers and demands students to speak up when answering him. He means well but he doesn't teach in a comfortable environment, you can feel the anxiety and stress of students in the room.
This is my 3rd time taking Dr. Buck, he is tough and he is intimidating as hell, but you'll learn from him. He's so smart it's mind blowing, i have no idea how his brain works but its incredible. You never really get used to his tests, they always catch me off guard READ THE BOOK don't just lean on the power points, you'll stay at C grade level.
By far one of the worse mistakes Iv ever made by taking this professor. I do not suggest anyone to put themselves under this amount of stress this class gives. Theres so many good professors out there who teach microbiology Buck is not one of them. He is very intelligent but shouldnt be allowed to teach this class & thats the God honest truth
There will be lots of memorizing and extra credit. He cares about his students and wants them to participate. Skipping lecture is bad and reading the textbook makes the class easier. A different grading scale is used. He gives out handouts that go along with lecture. Good professor overall, but makes the class REALLY difficult with his type k exams
I took Dr. buck for the first time for immunology. People were not kidding when they said he's insanely tough professor. You will be called out to answer questions sometimes and it helps to learn from mistakes. The test require the the most critical thinking possible. he's an amazing professor but it will take every ounce off effort to make an A.
He is the worst professor I've ever taken I would rather gouge my eyeballs out than take his class. I spent over 1000 dollars to take that class, worked so hard on trying to pass not only his lecture, but also the lab (lab instructor was horrible too). He does not give clear instructions, exams crazy difficult, and he's plain rude. Mark my words.
Dr. Buck is the toughest professor I ever had at TAMUCC , but indeed the very best. I took him for Micro, Immuno, and Med Micro. Take notes on his pwps, study those notes and pwps, AND read. Read until you understand the material. His type K exams are SO hard, but it's doable. I learned so much. If you want to learn, take him.
This man infuriates me. He doesn't give nearly enough time on tests and will just tell you that you haven't worked hard enough. His tone of voice is very arrogant and mocking. He may know his field, but he expects everyone to be experts. He also makes his own tests which require intense critical thinking. Trust me, avoid at all costs!
Dr. Buck is very knowledgable in the field of Immuno, but he expects you to have the same knowledge he does. Unrealistic expectations and claims he teaches the way he does to "prepare you all for grad school." Exams are EXTREMELY specific from ppts which also barely make sense. If you have to take the class, get the book & teach yourself.
Take notes over lecture ppts BEFORE lecture, look up & write out anything u don't know in ur notes. This will prepare u for lecture (he likes to call on ppl). I used the txtbook as a supplement, but mainly relied on lecture notes for exams. The material isn't difficult, it's mainly a matter of memorization. 3 exams and final is a group presentation
Dr. Buck is a phenomenal professor. Most people don't like him because they don't want to put in the work. It is a lot of material and he does expect you to learn it. HOWEVER, he knows it's tough and he gives a ton of extra credit. He cares about his student and also loves learning new things from his students. Take him if you have a chance! :)
He gives so much extra credit throughout the semester, so make sure to attend class & be aware of pop quizzes (quizzes are extra credit). It's inherently a difficult course, get the textbook (Kuby recommended) and keep up with notes. Form a study group, it will help A LOT. He calls on ppl during lecture, so try to read ahead to prepare yourself.
I'm going to be honest, he's a chill guy but I don't think I'd take another class with him (unless I absolutely have to!). Medical Microbiology is definitely hard but I have learned a lot so I am grateful to him for that...I just hope that I finish out with a decent grade :):
Incredibly difficult course taught by an incredibly difficult professor. However, this course is 100% worth your money. If you're willing to take the hardest BIMS course offered, go for it. Be prepared to study nonstop but to gain valuable skills. Dr. Buck is harsh and doesn't sugarcoat, but you must take a Buck course before you graduate.
Dr.Buck is an amazing professor as long as you are a hard working student. All of the courses I have taken by him are challenging but they are supposed to be. He makes you really have to learn how to learn. He is also really good at giving advice regarding Pre-Professional school. It may not always be what you want to hear but it is needed.
This is a difficult course as expected from Dr. Buck. I highly suggest taking at least one of his courses offered at TAMUCC. His course consists of 4 exams including the final. He may come off as rude, but genuinely take his advice and listen to what he has to say. His exams are based off power points: multiple choice, essay, matching, drawing.
Is Dr. Buck a hard professor? Yes. However, he is still a PHENOMENAL professor. You may not enjoy his class, his tests are hard and he likes to cold call. But no matter what you WILL learn.
