Hes really fun, and makes english class interesting.
Gregory was such a fun teacher. Every class would be different and the semester went by really quickly with him. He is extremely smart but still makes the class fun and interesting. One of my favorite teachers.
really cares that you learn the material
The essay topics were very unclear and hard to write on. His comments are sometimes outright mean. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY buying Diana Hacker's A Pocket Style Manual. It was never even mentioned in class. He's a nice and interesting person and a good teacher, but the course's boring subjects (pop culture) drags down the class.
He is the best teacher I've had. He makes the material interesting, even when it isn't. And he helps you with your writing. Take him. He is great.
he makes english really interesting. the books are good and he really leads awesome discussions about them. you will learn a lot.
He is really smart and gets you to think about books you wouldn't read on your own. The papers are good and he is a fair grader. He is great.
byala is the man. chillest prof i've had at temple thus far. the subj. of the class is boring but he tries to make it as interesting as possible. fair grader. follow the attendance policy, do your papers, and follow his corrections and you're golden.
Cool dude. he knows what hes talking about and can make you a better writer. however, sitting through his class is torture and horrible grader.
He was great. Always made the material clear. And he really improves your writing. If you have to take 802, he is the best.
He made material like Marxism and Deconstruction accessible. He was great at leading discussions about the books. Totally fair grader. The best teacher I've had.
good teacher if u want to improve your writing. it sucks to sit through his class, however, and he is a bad grader.
he is great. he really improves your writing, and he makes the readings interesting even when they are not. as a grader he is totally fair. his lectures on random topics are totally the best. if you have to take 802, take him.
Midway through my sophmore year I realize how important his class was. He is really a great teacher and he manages to make even boring things interesting. Follow his advice and do the reading and your writing will really improve. Best prof i've had at temple.
He is Awesome!
He is so great. I have him right now for 701 and I already signed up to take 802 with him. He is so smart and makes you understand the material. My writing is improving so much because of his class. He is great!
Terrible grader, terrible lectures, good in improving your writing
Byala is a great professor. He really improves your writing and he gives you really long and helpful comments on your papers. Grading is totally fair. If you make the changes he tells you to make you will get a good grade. He makes the material interesting. You should take him. He is great.
Byala was definitely awesome. The readings weren't great, but he still made them seem interesting. We had good discussions in class about them. He is really smart and interesting. And he definitely makes you a better writer. Follow his instructions your papers will turn out good. Great professor!
I just finished my portfolio. His is such a great teacher. His comments on papers are really long and helpful and he is really great at leading discussions in class even when the readings aren't great. He is my favorite teacher. Take him, he is great.
I'm so happy to be done with my portfolio but sad that our class is over. Byala was my favorite professor. I wish I could take him for 802! He makes class fun, and he really helps you improve your writing. If you have to take 701, he is the best!!
Great Professor. Helps your writing. Is fun to listen to in class. And he really goes out of his way to help you.
I worked hard, and I got a good grade in the class. He lets you know exactly what you need to do to fix your papers. His comments are long and helpful. In class he really helps you understand the material. Overall, he is great. He will definitely improve your writing. And he's really fun to have in class. I wish I were in his 802 class!
He is really great. He makes the material interesting and he is great at leading discussions. The class has a great laid back feel. Also, he really knows how to help you write better essays. Great teacher.
He gives a quiz in every class, so you have to do the reading. This definitely helps with the discussions. The books are good, and he makes them even more interesting when he explains them. He's great, and I wish I could take more classes with him.
Absolutely amazing. very intelligent man and very insightful. open to many ideas, patient, understanding, entertaining. the class material is dull at times but he does a good job in livening up the mood. learned a lot in his class and he motivated me to improve my writing. i'd take him 100 times over again.
Cool professor who kept the class discussions interesting. Paper topics aren't too bad either. I took two of his classes and would recommend to others!
Pleasing fella.
He was great. He wrote tons of comments on my papers, and they were really helpful. He definitely improved my ability to understand the material and write good essays. He is a great professor. I wish I could take 802 with him, but his sections filled up too quickly. If you have a chance, take him.
He was awesome. The class was enjoyable, and he really knows what he is talking about. His sessions on writing really helped me improve my essays. Take him if you want to learn.
I had him in 701 and I'm lucky I got him in 802. He is the best professor I've had at Temple. He keeps class interesting. I learned so much, not only about writing, but also about food and economics. It was one class I actually liked going to.
Awesome professor. He really knows a lot about everything. And he definitely helps you with your writing. This is the only English class I've ever liked.
Awesome professor. His way of explaining the texts is amazing. He is also really fair about grading.
He makes even the dull texts really interesting. Fair grader. He is great.
I was dreading taking the first part of the American Literature survey. I put it off for so long because I didn't want to read all of those early works. But he made them really interesting. He cares about making sure you do well. He is a great professor.
Great professor! Very funny, interesting and intelligent. He is young- def. still getting his footing as a lecturer, sometimes goes off on random tangents (which was okay, I actually felt like I would learn a lot in these). Easy grader as well, gave people tons of chances to improve their grades... all in all, highly recommended!
Greg is a fantastic professor. I was lucky enough to have him back to back semesters because he really helped me become a better writer. His lectures are never boring, and he makes the material a lot less painful. He's a really intelligent guy too and is just a nice guy in general who you can just talk to about whatever. Highly recommend!
He gives great insight into the texts we read and then write about. He shows us how to truly interpret what we are reading to understand what IS and IS NOT being said with the texts. His classroom is a great open discussion and if you actually want to participate, TAKE HIM. He's extraordinarily intelligent and will challenge you if you want to be.
He is an awesome professor who will take such a bland subject he has been given to teach and do a great job of making it interesting and bearable as well as make the class enjoyable. He gives you great info on your papers to help you rework them and get a high grade if you want. I strongly recommend this prof over anyone in the department.
really laid back, crazy intelligent/knowledgable, and pretty cute. i could listen to him talk all day. HIGHly recommended!!
Such a great teacher. Knows all his students by name, and pretty hot, too. Likes to joke around, but still a great teacher who's genuinely interested in teaching, not lecturing.
Really great teacher. Very smart and insightful. Grades pretty leniently and will help you fix your papers in advance. Class is mostly discussion based. Doesn't take attendance or do reading quizes as long as people show up and have read.
He keeps you interested in the class and has a fun personality. He goes off into tangents often but they are relevant to the topics sometimes. Take him if you can because he cancels class sometimes! He also gives impeccable input for making your paper better and the best.
He was a great professor. He gave lectures on lots of the material and also had class discussions. A few students talked too much but he was good at handling them and making sure everyone was heard. Gives lots of chances for extra credit. Best class I had this term. Take him if you can.
Great teacher! Take him if you can, class is interactive and enjoyable. I loved going to class and having interesting discussions. Gives good feedback and really cares about his students. The book is very important deff get it
This was a Survey of English Lit Beginnings-1660 course. It covered a wide array of complex material which Prof. Byala made it accessible, clear, and fascinating. No papers, just tests, and he told us everything that would be on them. Unlimited easy extra credit. If you have to take this course, try to take it with him for sure!
There were a few pop quizzes in the beginning but if you did the reading it was easy. Discussion board posts for every class, just 300 words about the reading done for the day and then he gives a long lecture. He's absolutely brilliant and really nice. 1 short close analysis paper and then 7-10 pg paper.
I took Professor Byala for ENG802 and he was by far one of my favorite professors at Temple. You do have to do the readings that he assigns to be prepared for the essays and (notified) quizzes he gives. He makes the class interesting and will make the atmosphere comfortable. Byala also makes sure everyone feel included in class discussions.
Professor Byala was one of my first professors at Temple, and he's honestly just fantastic. He makes the atmosphere really comfortable and fun, and he takes a hard reading and makes it crystal clear if you don't understand it. Highly recommend!
Professor Byala is probably one of the most intelligent people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and does a great job of managing class. Be prepared to actually do the reading, and try to participate at least once per class and you will do well!
I love Prof Byala. Our class always has amazing conversations about the pieces we read for homework. Usually you do have homework every night, but it's light reading. I recommend him HIGHLY. A funny man who is super intelligent and super helpful! One of my favorite professors I have right now, def trying to get him again for English.
Awesome teacher! He gives very good feedback and is very sympathetic towards students. I highly recommend him.
i love this dude
He wants you to pass! He makes sure your papers are the best they can possibly be before sending off your portfolio. An added bonus is that he is very light-hearted and hilarious.
He is the most caring professor I've ever met and will do everything he can to make sure you get a good grade. His sense of humor and engagement makes me look forward to his class. He is the best!!!!!
Absolute best professor I have had. Very intelligent and gives clear and concise feedback on your work. He genuinely cares about his students and his material. I would definitely take his class again.
One of the best professors I had at Temple. He is a brilliant guy who will do anything to help his students. I highly recommend taking him.
He is a pretty good professor. Throughout the semester, he focuses on one overall subject but split into three subcategories for the required three papers for the course. There are quizzes almost every class, with readings provided online but you can just skim through them. He is also available outside of class if you need his help on the papers.
This class is difficult, but worth it. You have to read a book a week. But he is able to make the books really interesting. Class discussions are cool and he does really cool things like in-class mysteries. Take him if you can.
I see people complaining. But it's your own fault if you do bad in this class. He gives a quiz every class, but if you don't know the answer you can give other facts to prove you read. He also gives like 5 extra credit opportunities. If you do the reading, you'll do really well. And it's worth it. Challenges you to think. Great teacher.
I placed into 802 but waiting until the second semester to take it. All of my friends hated 802. I was lucky to get into his section. He doesn't teach about public space. The material is about the body. It is hard but he really improves your writing. Best professor I have had so far. Just finished my portfolio. And I would take him again.
Quizzes are not pop quizzes. You are going to have one every time. They are specific but not hard if you do the reading. Books are fun and interesting and he does a great job illustrating the important points. You learn a lot. Two papers and two exams. The first was really hard, but he gives lots of extra credit. Great teacher. Cares a lot.
This class is hard. But it's worth it. He totally blew my mind with this crazy mystery in class. You definitely have to be prepared to read. He gives quizzes and the exam was really hard. He gives extra credit, like letting you retake the midterm. Awesome professor. Knows so much. Definitely take him. But you have to work.
Just finished my portfolio. Never worked so hard in English class before. Three papers, all over 7 pages. My friends in other 802 write 5 pages. He makes you work but it's worth it. I learned so much and improved my writing. Best teacher at Temple I've had. Take him! But be ready to put in effort.
Just handed in my portfolio. Tough class. But awesome dude. Helps you improve your writing. Makes you read a lot and write a lot. But he really cares and wants you to do well. Best class this semester. By far. If you have to take 802, take this section.
Awesome dude. Awesome class. One of the hardest I took but it was worth it. Three papers are long. He gives you great advice. Follow it and you're writing will improve and you'll get a good grade.
Great professor. Makes the class interesting.
Love this dude!
Very nice & funny guy. Wants his students to do well. The semester was very hard at first but then became easy. He wants you to work for your grades. He is always available to help & is very sweet. A lot of reading & quizzes but he is flexible w grading them. Doesnt want you to fail. Just show up, read & show you care & are trying & youll be fine
He is brilliant and funny and really wants you to do well. Definitely not an easy grade. I had to rewrite two of my papers completely. I learned more in this class than any other at Temple, sometimes about totally random things like the Tour de France. Truly great teacher!
Brilliant insomniac who seems like he has read everything. Toward the end of the class he took a few books off the syllabus, so that made it easier, but you basically average a book a week. Really creative teacher. My favorite part of class was the mystery he created. Takes this class. You won't regret it. It's hard but awesome.
This class was really hard and really awesome. Amazing teacher. I never figured out the mysteries he did. But they were fun. Take him if you can!
Best class of the semester. He challenges you to think. Lots of reading. Almost too much to keep up with. So beware. But awesome classes. Really fun and different. I've never had a professor like him. Don't miss the chance to learn from this guy.
Got an A for the class, but it was not easy. His papers are longer than other 802 sections. My friends wrote 5 pages when I was writing 8. A lot of reading too. But worth it. He definitely makes you a better writer.
Dr. Byala's class was great. His lectures often seemed like conversation as he engages with the class well and genuinely listens to peoples opinions. His grading criteria is clear and he helps you do well in the class by constantly going over everyone's papers and giving detailed feedback on how to get a better grade for your final draft.
Professor Byala is a really great teacher and person is general. Class is mandatory and there is a fair bit of homework, but he really makes the class fun and interesting and it shows how many he truly cares about students and how he wants all of them to succeed. If I could I would definitely take this class again!!
One of the best professors I've ever had here at Temple. Class was always interesting and genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. Really great guy, definitely take him!!!
This class is awesome. Loved the books. Some of them were hard. He does give a quiz every day so you have to read. But no exams. Just two papers and lots of extra credit. He is really caring and wants you to pass. Is also really great at interpreting the books. Take him.
Was dreading taking GenEd, but this class was awesome. Just be prepared, you have to read a lot. One novel a week. If they are log, he does them over two weeks. There are research projects too, but they are easy. He is an awesome lecturer and explains difficult ideas well. Love this guy and loved this class.
There is lots and lots of reading. But I love this class and I loved this professor.
I didn't really want to take English 802, but Prof Byala made it really interesting. The readings are definitely hard but he is able to explain them amazingly. You will work more than other 802 class. Definitely worth it. You will learn a lot and become a much better writer. He is great.
Best professor last semester. Wish I could have taken 802 with him but his sections fill up immediately. He pushes you really hard to improve your writing. Awesome professor.
Gregory loves to close read, which isn't a bad thing! He really explains the books down to the every word, which if you take notes benefits you with the papers you'll write. The class is discussion-based, he has a great personality and is very nice! It was a great class.
Dont not hesitate to take prof. Byala. He is awesome and such an amazing person. He give me a extra day to turn in my portfolio and I ask him three hours before. If you need anything or struggle with anything go ask him. I regret not showing him my paper after I revised it. He is truly amazing
Such a great professor. I always hated reading and writing intensive courses but I found myself excited to go to his classes. Very kind professor who cares about his students. Realistically, you don't have to read anything since he explains the texts and even tells you how to write the papers. Only caveat is he doesn't have rubrics for his papers.
Super easy going guy all around. You can tell hes really passionate about the readings he chooses and the whole class is used for talking about them so I highly recommend actually reading so you can engage. Class was only one day a week so longer than usual, but time would fly. 10/10 recommend
Dr. Byala has to be the most intelligent professor I've come across from Temple. His lectures are always amazing--truly puts in his best work and really cares about literature. Incredibly well-read. I'm currently taking his Modern American Lit because I loved the guy so much--do not regret it! If you love intense analytic lit lectures, take Dr. B!
Professor Byala seems to care a lot about his students; he pushes you to be a better writer and gives small assignments to makeup missed class or failed quizzes. This was one of my favorite courses at Temple because the curriculum was so unique, taking information from scholarly articles and history that is not traditionally taught in education.
For people who struggle to learn in a traditional school setting, he is the best professor for you. He teaches with the white board, power point and using videos. Some days when he goes over the readings he teaches class sitting down, which helps my anxiety in the classroom. He is also really funny which helps!
Very good professor, enjoyed taking him this semester. At the beginning of the semester he has a couple of quizzes on the readings that he tells you about, but he never really grades them, he just wants to make sure you're doing the readings so you don't fall behind. Other than the three main papers, there are few assignments. Very caring great guy
Professor Byala makes writing-intensive courses engaging. He provides helpful feedback to improve your skills, though the workload is higher than other sections. unstuckstudy proved useful for study prep.
Took his English class last semester and he is really one of the greats. The class was engaging and I feel that he took time to learn about every student. He is very kind and gives great feedback. Just do the work and show up to class and he'll be one of the chillest professors you have at Temple.
