Dr. Carr is great. He knows his stuff, and makes you want to know it too. He also makes class fun and interesting. It will definitely be your favorite of the semester, if you like learning more about our people and their history.
i haven't had greg at howard, i experienced his teaching style at the phila. freedom schools and i love it. I hate learning about history, but he makes it worth the while. I wanted to come to Howard just so that i could have him as a prof.
Dr. Carr is cute and fun and easy.
Dr. Carr is very talented, he has his law degree and a doctorate in Afro-American history. He is very in touch with our generation and knows how to communicate to us. He leaves it up to the students to challenge and motivate themselves. He rocks!
Dr. G. Carr is by far the best professor I have had at Howard thus far. He is extremely smart and intelligent in the area of African American studies and black education. His Education in Black America class is great.
Dr. Carr is intelligent, compassionate, and not to mention fine
I am a student in his Black Aesthetics class. Dr. Carr is absolutely amazing and deserving of praise for his teaching. He is engaging, delightful, and though-provoking! His smile is very attractive!
I found myself very intrigued by class discussions, but I thought that more test and material could have been covered within those discussions. Dr. Carr is very intelligent and is definitely one of the very best at Howard University.
Dr. Carr is simply phenomenal. My Howard Experience wouldn't be the same without him. Every student at Howard should take his class at least once. He is excellent!
Best teacher I have had to date!!!!!!!!!!
"You gotta love it though, somebody still speaks from their soul"

Dr. Carr is by far the best professor at Howard University. It is nice to have a professor who is actually interested in students learning. He is so passionate about what he teaches and it encourages students to be passionate about it also. Every student at Howard University should take a class with Dr. Carr. He is truly a great scholar.
The GREATEST Teacher outside of the school of business. Let's not forget he teaches high school in Philly when he is not in DC, CRAZY
Carr is the best and he needs to get a boo quick he's a fly older dude! He is hilarious and the work is easy...its going to seem like he's going to give you work...but he isnt...attendence is so not serious. great easy a!
Dr. Carr is (in my oppinion) one of the best profesors on this campus! People not in his class go to listen because he gives excellent lectures. The work is not hard but the two test given for the semester are very intense if you dont study! I haven't met a student yet that did not enjoy his class.
I am a pharm major I took his class for the credit. I did not read any books etc I got a B. His class was great but I didnt have the time. So basically his class is crazy easy and prolly da best on campus he's a wonderful lecturer and HOT!
Dr. Carr it the greatest! I enjoy his lectures. And he is super friendly
Dr. Carr is a caring teacher who cares genuinely for his students and the well-being of African people. He is a MUST take if you find yourself on the Howard University campus. He is very well informed and you ill frind yourself absorbed in Africana studies from the moment he opens his mouth.
Excellent Professor! Interesting Course, Be interested and you'll do fine!
I am not a morning person at all and for me to leave outta my house at 7am just to make it to class by 9:30 says alot. As college student I feel that its imperative that you take his class. No matter what he always comes to class with a cheerful demeanor and he is EXTREMELY brilliant! I'm taking him again next semester and u should too.
LOVEEEEE THIS MAN...PLEASE BELIEVE THE HYPE...you need to take him!
SIMPLY THE BEST. No student should leave Howard without taking at least one of Dr. Carr's classes. All of them have been top notch and packed tight with information and insight. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The most amazing professor at Howard University. You learn more than you ever knew possible. He expands your mind and your Howard experience isn't complete until you've had this man!
Like a Father.... helpful on all ends ... never on topic!! BUT SO WHAT HE TEACHES LIFE LESSONS... the final is str8 out of the review!
I LOVE THIS MAN! CHANGED MY OUTLOOK ON A LOT OF THINGS...
i got a c for the class without really knowin what was goin on. he s a cool funny teacher.
Best Teacher @ HOWARD. YOU LEARN ALOT FROM HIM. VERY VERY HELPFUL CARES ABOUT STUDENTS. NO PUSH OVER. FLEXIBLE GIVES YOU EVER CHANCE TO GET AN A
Dr. CArr is byfar the BEST professor i have had!U learn alot from this man. His class is truly ENJOYABLE. on days were i didnt go to any classes I was in HIS or went to another to makeup the class I missed. You write therefore you do have to be in class! you will discuss the assigned text so you do have to read. HE is truly a caring professor! TAke
Dr. Gregory Carr is by far the most amazing and dynamic teacher I have had in my entire life as a scholar. Since knowledge is power, this man has empowered thousands of students by passing on the wealth of knowledge he has on various different topics.Very fun, humble, and soulful teacher. He is one of the brightest minds of our day. Please take him!
I LOVE Dr. Carr. I'd marry Dr. Carr. As for the teaching, he's the kind of teacher you think of when you think "Howard University." You SHOULD NOT leave Howard without hearing the man speak, at the very least. His class is interesting, and if you pay attention n take good notes, you'll pass, no problem.
He is the BEST professor at Howard. Everyone should definately take one of his classes. There are 5 papers in the class and everyone has to fill out 20 Mbongi forms so he can get your feedback on the class. His classes are always interesting and he makes you excited about learning.
What can you say about Dr. Carr that hasn't already been said. Besides having a great senese of humor, I can honestly say he changed my entire perspective on what it is to be be black in America and in the world at that. Only 2 test, bi weekly papers that he accepts late, and Mbongi forms that I don't even think really count. Must take at least 1
This man is genius and a serious gem on this campus. Take at least one of his classes and be ready to learn everyday. You can learn a ridiculous amount by just reading his syllabus and its footnotes. LOL his syllabus has footnotes!! Don't waste his or your own time by not giving it your all in his class. You will change for the better. Guaranteed
I took him for African American Studies but WOW this class has opened my eyes to a lot of things and although i took him just for one of my divisions i loved the class and got an A .....just make sure you do the essays (which he will grade for completion) and do the embongy forms and study for final and midterm but i wouldnt stress them that much
whats not to love about Dr. Carr??? He is very passionate about Afro-American studies and makes you think in ways you're never thought. U definitely want to go to class all the time because its so interesting to hear what the man's got to say! He's the TRUTH! take him before you graduate howard! FORREAL!
Dr.Carr has to be THE BEST teacher on campus. Students who don't even have his class go to listen to him speak, hell, people of all ages come to hear him speak. He is SO passionate about what he teaches and he's not bad to look at either. I would DEFINITELY recommend him to any and everyone. I looooove him.
Dr. Carr is the BEST professor at Howard University!!!!!!!
GREAT PROFESSOR!! EASY A just turn in essays
Dr. Carr is a very intelligent man. He really does keep you interested but me being a sophmore transfer student I had no African studies classes so it was difficult and meticulous. As long as you make yourself known to him and ask questions, and let him know when your having trouble you'll pass with a A+. I only did 2 out of 3 papers and got an A.
He is VERY EASY. I barley went to his class and turned in all my papers in on the last day of class. He signs all overrides and doesn't take attendance. The exams are easy if u have a little help *wink wink* and he was interesting when I went. Just turn in all of your things and you'll get an A. I know I did!
A phenomanal man, the type of teacher you'll just sit in on his class real talk. He wants you to succeed so that comes of as he's "easy", just wants you to succeed. 2x dope. Best teacher at HU hands down, like his personality is bomb, hella cool and he loves us as a people . I love DR Carr
He is the best professor at Howard.
dr. carr is the professor u came to howard to have. extremely engaging and intellegent. only thing is u really dont get anything back, so might be lost as to ur grade until the end of the semester. his midterm and final are extra confusing to study for. because u might get lost as to whats important while he talks. u'll probably still get an a.
Hands down Dr. Carr is the best professor at Howard University. His passion for teaching is clear and his love for the students of Howard University is unmatched. If you graduate from Howard without taking one of his classes, you deserve some of your money back.
I had in for Education in Blk America. This class was truly amazing. It was very insightful, relevant, and interesting! There are two books, that require one page summaries every few chapters. The final is a big research paper. But nothing in the class is a pain, it's very enjoyable.
I had Dr. Carr for African American Studies. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Sometimes to the point that things may go a bit over your head. But overall, Dr. Carr is a phenomenal professor and you will learn a lot of historical information about Africans from America as well as all over the world.
his was one of the best classes i have taken at howard....dr. carr was super easy and interesting....i and like 20 other students out of 200 would get up early and be there at 8:10....i was tired but as soon as he came in...i was up!
I had him for Africana Studies..Excellent professor. Do all 20 mbongi forms and bi-weekly essays...its a easy 40% of your grade. Everyone should take him!
One of thebest teachers you will ever have.
Howard University students should already know that Dr. Carr is that dude! Take him!
I had him as a mediator of my freshman orientation class and he did one of the lectures. He was THE BEST. Just do the Mbongi forms and pay attention. He loves what he talks about and he even took us on a trip to NYC! Plus he's VERY handsome! I'm definitely going to take him for (hopefully) multiple classes before I graduate!
Every Howard student must take him. It was a truly inspirational experience. Courses and professors like this are the reason you attend an HBCU.
I had Doc for Intro to Af-Am, Spec Topics: Hip Hop, and Education in Black America, he had me at Intro. His passion is unrivaled and he's such a caring guy, not to mention intelligent and easy on the eyes. EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE A DR. CARR CLASS BEFORE GRADUATING. I love Doc, as a mentor and a professor.
Dr. Carr is one of the main reasons I keep encouraging students to go to my Alma Mater. He is an AMAZING professors. You will not regret taking any of his classes.
The knowledge you will gain from him and the experience that you will have with him in your presence is one of a kind.
I LOVE HIM! HE CHANGED MY LIFE! TAKE HIM! HE IS KAMAZING! THE BEST HOWARD HAS TO OFFER!...that is all.
He is easy to take and very excited in class. Although, it is hard to get in contact with him outside of the classroom as well as keep up with the dates that assignments are due (he often changes them). He grades a little to easy, but deep conversations are guaranteed in lecture, you WON'T want to miss that! P.S. Read the books, he'll know.
Although Dr Carr is great, I am not going to be a stan through this review like the rest. I took him for Black Aesthetics. The class is so boring but everyone, and I mean everyone receives an A. Out of the 7 required papers, I turned in 4 (all were late) and still received a big, fat A! Mind you, I only went to class about 3 or 4 times...
Love Carr. He is so intellectual it's sexy. He's very passionate and down to earth and loves Black people. He's a must take. He's also helpful outside of the classroom although he is really busy. He has a law degree so those looking for a recommendation for law school, get close to him. He's also very sexy to be pushing 50. FYI he's an ALPHA... !
OMG!!!!! This guys is every college students dream come true. Dr.Carr need to show some of this instructor on how to be a great teacher. He is so awsome, he is very knowledgeable about his African history.Oh by the way he is very sexy and CUTE!!!!I never missed a class.Just do all your Nbonji and biweekly essays and you will get your A.
Dr. Carr is a great professor, however he's overrated. EVERYONE praises him and the way he lectures saying he's the best professor at this institute, but he's a little overrated. I didn't learn much from this class, but since it was Freshman Seminar I shouldn't have expected much.
Easy class. Midterms and final exams are TOO MUCH! Expect not to know your grade until it's to late.
Interesting class...if you enjoy gaining knowledge I would recommend it, I would also recommend it if you often turn things in late (Dr.Carr gives you flexible deadlines). You don't have to go to every class but once a week is probably a good idea.
Best Prof Ever
He really is overrated. The way people talk about him you would think he was a God. Honestly, he blows up us knowing "our history" way too much. I guess he needs to come to amends that we live in a new generation and things are different now. He is an iight teacher. Take him or not take him. It does not matter.
Man he was great.
This class was not difficult, it just was not interesting. Nobody cared to show up but every class we had to turn something in at the end. However, at the end we had a final project due and he never changed my grade. It was an "IF" and I turned in my project multiple times so just be sure to keep track and contact with him.
I barely went to class (it was an 8AM zzzzzzz). I also turned in most of my papers late. I definitely did not do all of the required mbongis. He was never in his office when I went. I never understood what he was talking about (probably because I never went to class or read any of the books) but I came out with an A so shout out to Dr. Carr!!!!!
Interesting class. Great professor. Easy class.
Great orator, not the best professor. However, I enjoyed the class and ended up with an A.
I loved his class. Dr. Carr is amazing to listen too and he is passionate about his culture. There are people who say he is overrated but I feel like you should not go to Howard and not take his class. I don't know how he was in any other course but I learned a lot from African American studies and he gets into the lecture so it is interesting.
Love his passion. Always great volume and keeps the students attention.
Took the infamous Carr because he's like one of the professors everyone talks about. He's a great lecturer but some annoying people would sit in on lectures and take us WAY off topic. Don't expect papers back on time but EXPECT to write lengthy ones when assigned. Easy A.
Easy class with no tests. Just do a paper and will pass.
Professor Carr is very admirable and knowledgeable, but the fact that every grade is automatically a 100 makes people take advantage of his class. The readings are not mandatory. Tbh, don't buy the books. His lectures are amazing and make you think about society differently, but don't become so afrocentric that you completely abandon your beliefs.
Dr. Carr makes an 8AM class very entertaining. He is very passionate about the topics. It will make you think differently. He talks very fast so be prepared to take notes. Be prepared for bi-weekly essays. He offers a lot of extra credit through curricular's.
Do the Mbongis and you will pass. You can turn them in the last day and still pass. There are only two tests. One of them is about the syllabus. Very easy. Lectures are eye opening.
Dr. Carr is everyone's favorite professor. His relaxed attitude makes everyone feel extremely comfortable to learn or just catch up. Be aware that he reads his papers and looks mainly for substance. You won't get by just BS-ing.
His legacy is embedded at Howard and I just had to take one of his courses. Doesn't put grades in on time and is never around after class. Has office hours for no reason. The course is very interesting and but there is too much talking. More hands on, demonstrative activities should have been done. Test answers on the internet, doesn't change test.
Dr. Carr's lectures are interesting. However, the lectures are hard to follow in terms of content and you may find your mind jumping all over. Very hard to take notes and very hard to summarize what the lecture was about at the end of class. Do not take his class if you do not consider yourself an auditory learner.
EXTREMELY overrated. He gives a lot of reading and a lot of terms and important figures to remember; it can be overwhelming. His lectures are not structured or concise and he never gets through all of the information given in the powerpoint. However, his lectures in Freshman Seminar were one of the highlights of my freshman year.
I love his class but I faithfully refused to go to his 8am. Never cancels class and assigns biweekly essays but its light work. He will not grade anything until last minute, if ever
Dr. Carr is a good lecturer, but just a bad professor. He's all over the place and although you may feel "englightened" after class, you don't learn any content material. That will have you scrambling for essays, tests, and midterms.
I think everyone should have the opportunity to interact with Dr. Carr, he's a very knowledgeable person and he gives amazing lectures.
This is the professor who just likes to talk and who never teaches you the material in the syllabus. You will never know what to study or what to take notes on. And if you think you can figure that out in office hours, good luck finding Dr. Carr during those office hours. Thought provoking lectures, but Carr is overrated and just a bad professor.
Just take him I guess. He doesn't really go that deep everything is very surface level. I suppose he's good for freshman who are still new to Africana studies. Do not expect him to grade papers or pass them back, he doesn't respond to emails and he does not make time for office hours.
Dr. Carr is one of the best on campus. Gives 5 or so papers during the semester and though they seem intimidating, they are very doable. Just turn in all the papers and you'll get an A. You will learn a lot in his class if you will yourself to pay attention in class and read the books assigned.
Dr. Carr makes 8am lectures interesting. He assigns 6 books, and you will only use it for your writings and never really discuss them in class. There are 5 bi-weekly papers with a clear cut format. He is full historical information and seems to know every historic figure that ever lived. Also don't go to office hours, he is never there.
Looking on here you would think that he is a good professor but he has changed, He failed my whole class. His class is very informational but his TA is a very hard grader and gives tests that have nothing to do with what was discussed. 1000% wouldn't recommend until he gets a new TA.
Dr. Carr was great in Fresh Seminar. I liked him so I took intro to AA studies with him, horrible. $250 on books for the class, random lectures, and the tests are on unrelated topics. When we went online for COVID he stopped communicating with us. Chose pass because no one answered my emails so IDK my grade, but got an A and it doesn't count.
Dr. Carr is a pivotal figure of the Howard U community. This course can get a bit boring at times, but I do suggest going to class to get an enriching experience. His knowledge is vast, which makes the information learned worthwhile. The papers can be done without reading all of the text. The grades aren't put in till the end, which is stressful.
The attendance for Freshman Sem is not mandatory and you are not missing anything if you do not go. It has nothing to do with helping freshman navigate Howard, but rather topics about Black education. The group project was simple and the quizzes after each class are straightforward. Do not fail this course so you are not a senior taking the class.
Dr. Carr is a Howard special, and a must take professor throughout anyone's duration at Howard. His classes are normally on the bigger side with you having 100 to 250 other students, but his lectures are amazing and fun to be apart of. Grade wise it's a hit or a miss, as sometimes he grades them harsh or his TA grades light. Overall great class
Its always something new to learn in class
Dr. Carr is the "IT" factor of Howard! He lectures will literally change your life. My family would sit in with me listening and were so inspired. The good outweighs the bad. There are paper due every two weeks. The way he words his midterm and final is tricky. You will stress over your grades all semester just for everyone to get an A.
Is a wise and intelligent man, very passionate about history. Talks A LOT. Makes you watch 45 minute long lectures and gives weekly quizzes. Makes you read a book and take a quiz on that too. Final project at end of semester. Way too much work for a 1 credit course in my opinion. Dr. Carr is nice though, many opportunities to ask questions.
Has the worst TA I have ever encountered. I would take the class again, if there was a different TA. He does not answer emails at all, so if you have a question, go to class and ask.
Carr's class was pretty easy to manage. 6 bi-weekly essays and lectures every week. However, his lectures can be a little long and you may get lost. I'd recommend just watching the recordings. His recent joke about the George Floyd trial kinda changed my opinion about him, but overall pretty simple course.
Dr Carr has so much knowledge and his lectures can be very interesting but seem very long. Attendance is not mandatory and he does post lectures on YouTube. The only assignments were essays every two weeks about the topic we discussed, the midterm and final. Pay attention to the citations in the essays thats really what its graded on. Overall easy.
He is not accessible outside of class and has a terrible TA
Dr. Carr is very passionate and excited but forgets he's talking to people who aren't on his level. He flies through books like we have time to read them, assigns essays every 2 weeks, just too demanding of a workload for a 1 credit class. He's a great speaker, but I wouldn't take him again.
Carr is an extremely passionate teacher who is caring and understanding. The thing is, he loves to talk about things that aren't necessary for this class. This would be okay if his quizzes were easy, but they are not. There is like 6 quizzes, and they are all hard. My best advice is to take notes, meet your prof, and COLLABORATE WITH YOUR PEERS.
There is a lot of reading material. Be prepared to read. Professor Carr does a great job going in depth into the material during lectures. He also posts the lectures, so that students can review. This class was test heavy.
He was great, he just goes off on a lot of tangents so be ready for a rollercoaster of ideas
Good professor who did his best, just the course was doing too much for one credit.
Dr. Carr is definitely a brilliant man and I learned a lot in his class. However, he does not teach clearly. He constantly goes on rants that have little to do with the topics, then has weekly quizzes where the questions are based on short bursts of class and not things he speaks about in-depth, and shows no intention of helping his students.
Dr. Carr is a genius. He is highly intelligent in the study of africana and I greatly appreciate his personablility towards his students. He does have weekly quizzes which i always forgot about, but luckily my class had an amazing group of students who were so willingly to share their information with the class. take advantage of his brillance!
All you need to do is whats on canvas. I think his classes are interesting
