Great teacher! Not easy grade, but never says you're wrong, helps you out
so nice! very helpful and open to ideas.

good teacher, fukin HARD marker..
Enjoyed the class, bit of a hard marker, but very interesting class
best Eng teacher at Kwantlen, highly recommended
nice guy and easy on the eyes--never discredits u but not easy marker: great guy
He gives participation marks, helps u w/assignment..not bad. hard marker though.
Good prof, but he tends to be opinionated when it comes to answers from the class, and he's a real hard marker.
a very very very very very good-lloking instructor... ^^
This guy is so not hot! He's a middle aged asian stick! A hard marker, but all English profs are. A nice guy though.
you can tell he's a smart guy, but in my opinion he doesn't project that through his teaching. he marks less than fairly. HE IS NOT HOT! he is clear in his expectations.
even though the highest grade I got on an essay was a b- I got an A- in the class..he is very helpful by telling you what he wants on essays but then he marks them hard anyway!! independent class. you learn about authors lives.
Although he is a hard marker, he is very clear in what he wants, he's also pretty good looking for a prof!

he's very patient,a fair marker and clearly expains the material. he loves different views or insights, just be sure you can back up your opinions and you'll do great in his class. remember to look for a "hum..." on your paper, that's a good s
Wow! He's HOT! ...and an excellent teacher...makes me want to take english every semester!
He is really all that! He is like.."ooh la la"..definately a good-looking instructor. Even though his classes are soooooooooo early, I'll stay wide awake just looking at his gorgeous face.
very nice...soft voice sooo soothing...he is a very fair guy and will do anything to help you, especially with poetry!!!
Very interesting teacher, fun to learn with. Super nice and straight forward. He is farily hard though, maybe too hard.

Hard markre. A 'group-work' taecher, meaning he doesn't instruct enuff....have'nt learnt anything relly....see, can't spell?
Nice guy,but not a fair marker. If he disagrees with the points you're making you'll get a low mark-even if you have a valid argument. 1205 isn't a fun course either...
Nice guy, willing to help, but quite a hard marker. Ironically enough, he is one of the better Eng teachers in Kwantlen.
good looking but HARD...he expects you understand all the readings. Unclear instruction. Warning: DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
Yes, hard marker but the best at Kwantlen. He's nice and very approachable. Unlike the other English profs he's willing to help you if you need it.
Awesome teacher. He's not as bad as other people have said - you guys haven't been taught by the worst. He's definetly NOT easy, but I'd say he's a fair marker. Group work = easy mark.
nice guy, helpful, intersting lectures
really nice guy. easy to understand. if you show up to every class and participate in every class discussion you can do well. highly recommended!!
Very fair guy. He gives you what you deserve. He's not easy where you get A for doing nothing, but if he sees you that u worked hard and tried your best, he'll give you a decent mark unlike many other english teachers. Recommended for future classes
Very hard marker, dont expect any mercy.
Good Teacher. He's not the easiest marker, but will ensure that you learn the material and is very open and willing to help. Very writing intensive so be prepared to write 1-2 essays per week.
Are you kidding me? This guy is a joke. Worst English prof I've ever had. Doesn't clarify answers, never tells you if you've gone off the mark or not, discussions are awful and has unrealistic expectations. He's nice, but as a prof? He needs to learn how to better explain the material.
not clear, not helpful, if you ask him for help he'll tell you that you need to figure it out on your own, ,not available in office hours, cancels lots of classes
Very good english teacher. One of the best. Marks fairly and tells you what you need to improve on. Classes are fun. Good amount of movies and homework. Overall a must have. made my first semester very welcoming.
sucks ass! don't bother taking hime cause all you'll get out of his courses is a guarenteed drop in your GPA.
Very hard prof. I failed my first course. Guess he's approchable and explains if you need help. Marks really hard.
not the easiest of markers but if you come to every class and participate, you will do well.
He sucks.

Cool guy....knows his stuff....i learned lots.....very friendly...lots of assignments though and not enough time for exams.
Nice teacher. Very informative. An EXTREMLEY hard marker. Do not expect ANY mercy in the marking. Not extremely clear in all of his expectations for assignments. Will give you feedback when asked - brutally honest in the critiquing. Good class discussions though. Short time frame for exams - Write fast!
VERY HARD marker. Not fair at all. Impossible to get an A. Boring classes even if you like English as much as I do. STAY AWAY
SUPER HARD MARKER
I will echo the others when I say that he is very honest in his evaluation of your work, but he tries to give compliments as well as suggestions for improvement. Marks somewhat hard but is fair. Interesting course material and class discussions. Provides a comfortable environment for class participation.
He is very nice...and is pritti fun in his class...but he marks REALLY HARRDDD!!! dun take it if u dun wanna put yr GPA @ riskkk!!
He's a super hard marker, but it's not unwarrented critique. It makes you strive to do better, which will prepare you better for other classes at University. The critiques are clear and helpful, pointing out where to go next and how to improve. Also includes compliments. It's valuable stuff. My writing improved a lot in that class.
I highly recommend Greg as a techer. Articulated, well spoken, knowledgable and helpful. Hard but fair marker, offers excellent feedback on your assignments. Very witty, makes classes interesting. Again, highly recommended.
Greg Chan is an excellent teacher for English. If I were to recommend a teacher for English I would recommend only Greg.
class is interesting with a lot class participation. assignments and readings are also interesting. one thing is that Greg is not very helpful if you have questions and he is always late for office hours!!!
Not as great as other people say he is.
Not helpful, doesn't know how to teach. Boring as heck and comes off pretentious sometimes. English profs at Kwantlen suck.
Great teacher. Very patient and really knows his stuff!
Not as great as people said.
Greg is simply the best english teacher I've ever met!!
Class is extremely enjoyable to attend. With a mixture of songs, movies, youtube, and group discussions, as well as notes. The notes taken dont help towards essays/tests. Marking strategy is hard, there is no guideline. When you get your essay back, you have a low mark, yet his comments say your paper was great.
He's a hard marker but fair at the same time. He mostly give great critiques and pointers to improve your writing and he chooses interesting topics and essays to read. Fun class discussions. He's somewhat helpful if you know specificly what you're asking.Overall, I enjoyed it.
I found his class to be entertaining. We got to watch a few do****entaries. I'm not sure what it is with English teachers and LOST, but they seem to dig it. He's a very picky marker, but he gives you a lot of comments. There's a lot of group work, discussion and in-class assignments. Overall, hard to please, but interesting.
GREG!! He's a good teacher (not too sure if he's the best, but he probably is). I do recommend him, and my other friends did recommend me for his class before I took the course. So, watch out for punctuation, coherency, and sharpen your writing skills when writing your essays. I love his word use and diction when he instructs his class.
This class was a disaster. Very hard marker. Lectures only summarize the plot f stories, no relation to literary analysis, yet the essay supposed to be about literary analisys. Does not encourage creativity. Very disappointing.
From what I have experienced he is a good prof..classes are entertaining! hard marker though, but is always there to lend a hand! Even though he is a hard marker I would recommend him!
I have never written a post about a prof before. I felt this was necessary. Its understandable that Eng Profs mark hard. However, this prof marks highly difficult: without guidelines, notes, or aids in supporting your writing. This is a 1st year course. Not a 3rd or 4th year Eng course. 'Nice' profs have no relation to your grade mark. no recommend
I made the mistake of taking his class but I regret it now. His classes are fun but when it comes to marking he is a very hard marker. Not recommended if you want to improve your writing skills. He doesn?t provide any help and not available during office hours. Look for another English teacher.
I personally don't like English class, but I find his class is very interesting. I like him very much. He is very generous and patient. However, he does not check email very often; just find him at the office.
His class was one of the few I actually enjoyed.
Greg will seem like an extremely nice guy when you first meet him. You will be surprised, however, when he marks your first essay or midterm. Greg marks VERY hard, and you will scarcely do well on essay's or exams. If you want to keep a high average, AVOID HIM at all costs - he will bring you down.
Great Prof, just like any other English prof, is somewhat difficult when it comes down to marking essays. But, his lectures are worth the money and time! He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and he is very helpful when students need help via email or over the phone too! Great prof, trust me, you will not regret it! Definitely Worth While!
He seems too nice in the beginning but completely changes after.Expects way too much from students, very unclear, doesn't know what he wants and leaves everyone confused. Can never stay on his words!!! If you show him your essay,he will flatter you with "EXCELLENT WORK", but wait until he marks the same essay. he Attendance is MUST MUST MUST!!!! Av
Nice professor but HARD!!! he's not very clear when explaining things. Like he just expects first year students to KNOW how to write a research paper and his topic ideas aren't clear either. I don't really recomend him for first year students so maybe pick a different professor.
Take him if you are ACTUALLY planning to do English. If you are just trying to get a passing grade like me, then avoid at all costs. His class average was C-/C. 10% participation, 10% online weekly assignments, 25% final, 5% quiz, 50% other essayssss
Greg's a good prof, his lectures are all based on essays. He is a HARD marker. Prefers MLA style. We watched a few videos in class and had questions to do, PAY ATTENTION TO THE VIDEOS. A helpful, easy to approach, and friendly prof. I recommend him if you like English, if not... good luck.
Greg Chan is amazing! Marks very HARD, but he gives you a lot of comments on your paper. good looking. A man with class. Very smart and diction is very good.
He was honestly the only eye-candy I had in class .. extremely good looking. His lectures are super fun, and very clear. He tries to engage everyone in debatable topics, and actually listens to what the students are saying. He's always available to answer any concerns, and gives us questions before-hand to prepare for exams. HOT & AMAZING! TAKE HIM
Greg is a great Prof, I would def recommend taking him. He is very clear in his lectures. I took this same class before with another instructor but had to drop it, and found that Greg requires u to do the minimum amt of reading. My only complaint is he doesn't give u the heads up of when things are due, so just make sure u pay attention 2 deadlines
Greg is an amazing instructor. He gives very detailed feedback, instructions and what he expects of his students. I would DEFINITELY recommend him to anyone looking to take his class!
Overall hes a good teacher, but he marks really hard. I tired my best in his class but hes really picky about essays and how you present them to him.
i didn't even read half the material as it wasn't necessary for tests or essays. super nice guy, but as far as his teaching goes, average in every respect.
He is very interesting and teaches you what you need to know. He also keeps engaging discussions in class and answers all the questions. He also lets you re do assignments to help you out and yeah, he's awesome.
Useless class. Hard marker.
Greg is a professor who clearly knows his "English." However, as an introductory English class, he isn't merciful and it seems hard to apply the things he talks in class to help improve your own writing. Take him for upper level classes.
Like most English courses, your essays are heavily scrutinized, however understanding Mr. Chan's feedback can improve your mark significantly. He forms a comfortable learning atmosphere for improving our essay writing skills and thought processes. Overall, he's an excellent prof, but be prepared to receive your essay back with a lot of green ink.
Best Eng prof ever , quite helpful and clear with instructions; give attendance marks sometimes; hardly used the other "required" book, so don't buy it unless you want to waste $80 or something!!
Greg is helpful, but has high expectations for a first year class, and marks quite hard. I did well, but would typically be one of only 2-3 A papers. I would take Greg again, but for those looking for an easy ENGL 1100, this isn't it.
Greg is an awesome English teacher, particularly because he wants all his students to succeed in his class. Unlike my first experience 1100 I wasn't going to take another English class but he really helped out and he was approachable unlike the other profs. It's not a easy class but you defiantly learn a lot.
Prof Chan has very detailed requirements for essays; however, it's not that hard to follow them. Lectures are important because he lays out the expectations for the essays. A bit of effort will be needed when working on the papers. He's a nice guy overall. Definitely not a GPA booster, but isn't an unreasonable marker. Be ready to put in work.
I felt lucky to have this great professor. His lecture is very clear and well organized. From the interesting readings and writing assignments, I got not only the improvement of English but also the spirital growth. Thank you!
He is a good guy and tries to help you. His feedback is very detail. The mark is reasonable. ENGL is not a easy class. I worked hard and spent a lot of time to write essays since English is my second language.
The essay and paragraphs were scrutinized, which was excellent feedback. His lectures were neat and organized and easy to follow. Even when I didnt finish or did the readings of the week, I wouldnt feel lost during the lectures. He is very approachable when it comes to homework and assignments. I would definitely take a course with him again.
He made me a better writer and better student overall. Go see Greg during office hours for extra help.
Only one big paper and a shorter in-class essay (he says he doesn't like final exam essays). Sometimes we didn't even have a physical class, just do an assignment on our own and hand it in to his office. Be sure to check your email in his class!! He's a fave :)
Greg is a tough grader for a first year class. Didn't like how he didn't hand back feedback on the first project before the second was due. How are we to know where to improve? He also cancelled 3 x 3 hour classes this semester. He's a great guy but wouldn't take his class again for these reasons.
As a first year student I was intimidated by university English courses. Gregory Chan is a great prof who gave me excellent feedback which has helped me improve my writing significantly. Be sure to show participation in his class- it wont go unnoticed. Also, be sure to go to his office hours for extra help, it pays off in the end.
Greg's class is interactive and you learn a lot. he provides great feedback but is an extremely tough grader. He expects you write refined English in his assignments. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT.
For an Eng1100 class i think he marks with pretty high expectations. Greg tries to help out where he can and is very easy to approach. But he gave us feedback for the 1st paper after we handed in a 2nd one.. how can he expect us to improve without the feedback. After handing in a paper he gives us tips that would benefit if given BEFORE due date
Very good and easy prof! Takes out time to critique each paper thoroughly and gives helpful feedback. Definitely recommend him!!
Personally found the class very difficult and that is coming from someone who understands english subjects quite well. Feedback was weak so I never understood why I did not do well on things. Things were weighed extremely heavy; that made the class quite stressful.
Found this class relatively difficult, only a few major assignments but they will certainly define your grade. Criteria for the essays were clear and understandable but definitley a lot for a basic first year English class. You will have to work hard and take advantage of office hours if you want a good grade. Very hard marker.
Chan outlined his class criteria before class started & stuck to none of it. His grading was harsh & he gave none of the assignments back in time for improvements. Grading was arbitrary and made no sense. He didn't mark or even look at blog posts til semester was over. Wouldn't recommend him. Way better profs out there.
very hard marker. avoid him if ur an international student. he expects refined English in his papers as if this is a 4th-year English course. his classes are very boring and lots of homework and assignments.
How he marked essays and other works was too harsh and difficult for first year university students. Very picky on small details and these small details can cost a lot of marks. Gave back papers with proper feedback but waited at least 2-3 weeks before we received them back. Overall, a nice man and is willing to discuss but hard teacher
He's really fun and engaging professor, and he truly wants to help his students during and after class.
Honestly, He is a great professor. He lacks in his marking criteria, he marks extremely hard and marks the course like it is a 3rd or 4th year course. Prepare yourself in your assignments
Everything about his classes are good, but not his marking. You always think you did good but get a C. He marks too hard.
Mr. Chan is an excellent teacher. He cares deeply for his students and he puts in a tremendous effort to watch them succeed. His lectures are interesting and he has a passion for what hes teaching. He encourages his students to express their opinion and he is always ready to help. Teaching aside, he is a lovely and positive person to speak to.
Very difficult when it comes to marking and takes forever to return marked assignments. Attendance is mandatory as he does many in-class workshops that count for marks.
HE is good overall but I found him tough grader and his distribution of marks is kind of awkward and not so lenient prof. He is good in his subject and have good knowledge but tough grader and provides marks like after ages
I got a B in high school and a B in university, but I tried ten times harder in uni. I worked so hard for that B since I am naturally not that good in English. If you are talented and have done good in English before, he will probably mark fair but if you are a beginner and struggle, I would recommend someone else. He did no Finals, fewer essays.
Some might say avoid this proffesor... But seriously he is genuinely a good proffesor as his live lectures were always been helpful and he is responsive through emails also and i agree he is a tough grader, but if you Will study hard you Will get a good grade. I will strongly recommend him for English 1100 course.
Greg is great. My written English significantly improved after taking his 1100 course. Lectures are optional but would highly recommend. They are short and really helped me stay up to date on what's going on and in class exercises. Keeping up with the blogs is also a good way to know what is going on. The work load is fair. A caring prof.
I was assigned a low grade in English from this professor and I do not understand why. I have reviewed some of the comments by other reviewers and noted that some of the reviewers rating giving this professor high scores have numerous spelling and grammatical errors. LOL!
This is the only review you need for this teacher. I took this class after reading the reviews but was highly disappointed. There are 3 assignments each worth 20%, and then participation/quizzes and final each worth 20 as well. He expects way too much for a first/second-year course. he is a VERY tough grader and very picky, the novels chosen-boring
Terrible. Super tough grader, takes so many marks off for simple mistakes and doesnt give good feedback explaining why. Also takes forever to hand stuff back
Professor Chan is passionate, caring and super involved in teaching. His lectures are engaging and the guidelines for all assignments are very clear. He provides good feedback and opportunities to reach out for help if necessary. He is a tough grader, but you'll be a better writer for it!
I am a visually impaired disabled student. I simply filed a complaint about this instructor's behavior, sale of an Anthology to be used as a textbook with no publishing data or legal permission from the owners of the Intellectual Property. Then things got strange. Gave me a very low grade and filed complaints against me for not being woke...
I had Gregory as my English professor back in 2019 and would discourage anyone taking any English class with him. Essays were marked strictly. Thank goodness, I passed but only just... Despite that, he is a kind instructor. You would enjoy his lectures.
i wont recommend because he wont give you marks easily and its not worth it also his teaching style is so boring .
the worst proffesor ever
Not sure why he has such a low rating, he can be a little tough at grading but you'll be fine if you actually do your assignments. He's friendly and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Always includes everyone in class discussion and encourages us to share our ideas. Funny and understanding.
This professor's teaching style is dry, and the class is tough. However, using resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook can help prepare for exams. Not the most engaging, but manageable with dedication.
A bad professor; dont take him
Worst professor ever don't take his class
Don't take his class because he just want to fail you and earn your money
Don't take his class you will fail
Don't take his class unless you want to fail
Worst professor ever. The school should replace him. Don't take his class. Don't blame me for not warning you; this is based on my experience. You will regret for taking his class. I have never felt such worthless in my entire life.
You will regret for taking his class
