He's a very good phil teacher. If you don't understand he'll keep on you until you do. Comes to class with the same attitude everyday and has a great sense of humor. He is an easy grader and his test are some of the easiest ive taken.
His Ethics class was awesome! We discussed current ethical issues. Class was always interesting. He explains things well and makes sure that everyone understands.

Best prof I've ever had. He's extremely knowledgable on the subject and makes class fun. Everyone is included and no one is left behind. I would take the class again in a heartbeat.
A very good professor, I will definitely take him again if I have the opportunity. My only complaint is that he teaches from a very Catholic standpoint, and he quickly argues against any views that disagree with those of the Catholic church.
Great guy, doesn't try to rush through things. Makes sure you understand before moving on.
One of the most difficult classes I have taken, but I learned a ton! Dr. Coulter is interesting and really makes you think.
Dr. Coulter is very tough but wants you to understand concepts. Says "EH?" all the time (Because he's from CANADIA!!!). Very intense, very interesting, likes hockey...likes philosophy and being Catholic.
I can't believe these ratings. Do not take Coulter unless you are prepared to agree with everything he says. Do not take this class if you are pro-choice or pro gay-rights or non-Catholic. I was kicked out of his class and told not to return. I got an A in my replacement ethics class.
Dr. Coulter is intense. It is difficult to hold a different view than him, but that is because he provides convincing arguments! Pursuing the truth, is his highest priority -no doubt! Be ready for lots of "general appeals". Lots of fun and energy!
Prof. Coulter is completely unwilling to listen to anyone who does not agree with his point of view.
I am Catholic (I agree with everything the Church teaches) and I love classes from a Catholic standpoint -I mean we are a Catholic University! But, Dr. Coulter's attitude was hard to deal with. He is abrasive, reactionary and difficult at times to get answers from.

He is by far the hardest prof I have ever had, but I loved the class because of it. The man knows exactly what he is talking about, and let me tell you how much you will appreciate what he teaches, even if you do not agree with all of what he is saying. Material covered was very difficult, but he went over it thoroughly. GREAT prof!

Dr. Coulter is an excellent professor. This class is not necessarily easy, but it was definitely entertaining. I took him for both phil 115 and 215. If you do the homework and papers the way he wants them done (which he explains clearly) you will do well. He knows his stuff and he knows how to teach it.
If you want a professor who is determined to force his opinions on you whether you like it or not (while laughing at his own terrible jokes) then take Coulter. I did not enjoy one class period with him going out of his way to make anyone without his exact philosophy look like an idiot. Dont take him if you want a prof who is willing to listen.
Dr Coulter was an excellent teacher. i loved his philosophy class, it was very entertaining and it forced us to think in a philosophical manner. i highly suggest this class!!!
He is incredibly tough BUT the toughness only helps you. He certainly holds very conservative views but he is so intelligent and well thought out that I found it to be a fun challenge to argue with him. If you have different opinions, you better be able to defend them! Goes into ethical questions relavent today so class discussions are great.
So long as you do exactly what he says for homework and nothing more, you'll do fine.
Coulter is a really good prof, but he is definately a hard grader. His class only has two tests and no final with either 1 or 2 papers. He can be intimidating, but he means well. Open to helping students, but won't just give you the answers. Class is discussion style, which makes it a lot better! He's a good prof, I would recomend him.
has some extreme views... but i really like this class! for ethics we spent a lot more time on issues than other classes, which is what i wanted. i'd say take him just to take him!
Dr. Coulter is an amazing professor. He's always willing to help; over email or during office hours. His lectures are clear, and our tests were essay style. He doesn't shy away from controversial topics, instead he embraces all the students' questions. Take him if you can!
Coulter is really great at teaching you how to argue and how to see fault in arguments. This has been really beneficial to me in and outside of class. A realllllly great professor and a funny guy too! He uses great examples!!! Readings can be dull if you aren't into philosophy but he will definitely help you if you ask for it. TAKE HIM!
Not very helpful
I've felt bad for months, b/c I was too hard on G.C. in my teaching eval. Great prof; very, very hard, but brilliant. Enjoys arguing; you must be strong in conviction AND in logic when opposing him, as he will pursue the truth with you, and in a very male way: by publicly dissecting your case, often brutally. If you want to LEARN & work hard, take.
Pretty cool guy. Fun class. Interesting conversations. Some people don't like him, but those who do pretty much love him. If you are interested in philosophy and can argue confidently without getting angry and whiney, he's perfect. Good deal of day to day work, but not too dificult. Will help if you ask
Means well but is rather pompous. Is personally very interested in the material but doesn't seem to understand why students wouldn't be. Daily readings and two big papers. Essay midterm and final. He isn't terrible and is nice enough, but I wouldn't recommend him.
Really comes across as all knowing and pompous. Not a very clear grading policy, and also not very helpful.
Professor Coulter is a fantastic guy, his stories are often fun and entertaining, and he is very knowledgeable in his field. His class, however, is an extremely hard class to take. His grading is erratic at best, and he is very severe when it comes to grading homework. If you want to have an incredibly large workload, then take this class.
Dr. Coulter is one of the best teachers I have had in a long time. His classes are challenging but if you are willing to learn you will do well and have fun. Be ready for class discussions, because if you pay attention in class you will do really well on the final
You'll learn Philosophy but it will never be fun.highly morbid in his lechures which at first is funny, than when it consitantly continues it grows to be distrubing.Much of the time he doesnt explain hw and when looking for help he just directs you down the hall to the philosophy tutors instead of helping you during his office hours. Look elsewhere
Dr. Coulter is a hard professor, but I highly recommend him. You will come out of his class knowing a lot about philosophy. His midterm and final are hard, but if you listen and participate in class, you'll catch on. After class seems to be the best time to ask questions, as he doesn't always answer them during class.
Mr Coulter is extremely unorganized and hard to follow, a lot of mistakes on syllabus and assignments on Blackboard and by email. Likes to repeat himself. Thinks everyone is talking when they are not. I would avoid his courses.
Dr Coulter is an extremely tough professor. Off topic discussions were really interesting. He is extremely knowledgeable and his class was the most intellectually challenging course Ive ever had. If youre up for a challenging class, I highly recommend him. He teaches things that I will take with me throughout college and I already have used.
Fabulous professor. Extremely tough course but a good challenge. It really gets you thinking in a whole new way. He is willing to help you understand. He cares about his students and is a passionate Catholic. Great sense of humor - try to get him to laugh! I recommend him.
not many homework assignments. he never stayed on topic, so i never knew when to pay attention. usually left class more confused. lots of group discussion that you need to participate in or you will get points docked. 2 papers, impossible midterm, and a take-home final. i did not enjoy this teacher at all.
Horrible professor! The only opinion that was right was his. I do not recomend his at all!
Dr. Coulter can be kind of intimidating at first. The mid-term is pretty difficult and he is not clear about what you need to do to study for it. Two papers that are easy enough if you do exactly what he tells you and clear your argument with him beforehand. He's a tough prof, but overall he's really funny and I learned a lot about logic.
He is close-minded and thinks that he knows everything about everything. He is unclear about the structure of the class and what he expects from you, as well as the grading system that he uses. I would never, ever take him if you can avoid it. He is mean and horrible and rude. He actually spends the entire time talking down to you as well.
Simpleton exterior belies a schooled debater. A bit of a control freak as far as the tone of each class went, with sort of an odd "hazing" period. He took a shine to me, but only after realizing I wasn't an atheist, and merely wanted him to earn his assertions. Can't wholly recommend him because of his cryptic, sporadic requirements from us.
Dr. Coulter is an excellent professor. I had him for PHIL 115 and later for PHIL 380. Some people in my class didn't like the way he was very honest about the point of philosophy being a pursuit of truth. If you are a relativist, you will be challenge. Dr. Coulter's class made me interested in Philosophy. If you want to learn take his class.
Dr. Coulter was an excellent professor. It was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken but it was definitely worth it. I took this as pat of the Catholic Studies paired course and it was excellent. Very challenging but good; It changed the way I think. Plus, Dr. Coulter tells great stories and is really entertaining.
I had him for the Phil 115 and he was great. The class was interesting and Dr. Coulter is a character with a good sense of humor. He also calls everyone by their last name which is nice. It was the class I looked forward to going to. The homework was simple besides some readings were slightly complicated. Take Dr. Coulter! He was a great professor.
I took Dr. Coulter's Phil 115 as part of the Paired Course. He is a blunt yet funny professor and makes class fun. The class is difficult until you get used to it, but you learn a lot from it. I would highly recommend him.
A great prof. and a great man.Take him for POG if you have the change. Very interesting to listen to, knows the subject and brings a different perspective that will challenge you make you learn. The papers are very helpful and will develop your writing. He is also super funny in his own way.The perfect way to finish your Philosophy degree.
I took this class as part of the Catholic Studies Paired Course and loved it! The class was challenging, but with a little hard work the material wasn't too bad. Dr. Coulter is super helpful, and has a great sense of humor, even if he is opinionated. I looked forward to this class, and was sad when it was cancelled. I would take it over again!
My least favorite professor ever. He claims he doesn't bring religion into his class but he clearly pushes his Christianity on you (whether he means to or not). Goes off on these ridiculous tangents. I took him when the marriage bill was on the table and he made it clear he was anti-gay marriage. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Great teacher, we hardly had any homework besides one presentation we had to give. The class period was tons of fun, we talked about a reading we had read and then just argued and discussed anything from having souls to marriage preparation to brushes with death. Come willing to change your opinion on some of the topics discussed in class.
Interesting subject and class. I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say on the readings and course themes. He is straightforward with what he is looking for and gives steps to follow for assignments. He pretty much stopped collecting homework after we started presenting our papers, but still keep up with the homework to keep the logic fresh.
The homework consists of short and easy logic assignments based on readings that are actually interesting. The readings are discussed in class and there is only one presentation and one test at the end of the semester. He tells light-hearted jokes to get people talking and brings up good arguments that get you thinking. Take this class!
Tough class, but he is willing to help you work through most issues. It is a lot of logic at first, but after getting past that practice, it gets easier.
Absolutely loved Dr. Coulter! He is incredibly smart, and makes you read a ton of material. Learned logic in the beginning, then read articles from Plato to Searle to Singer. Hot-button topics, but he creates an open environment and wants everyone to feel free to voice their thoughts. Great discussions. Lots of reading and analysis. Makes you think
Dr. Coulter is awesome. He leads great discussions, is funny during class, and explains to you what he wants. He is a tough grader and gives out a lot of homework. This was much tougher than other Philosophy classes that I've heard about, but I very much enjoyed the class. He loves hockey, bring that up.
Pros: Assignments are good, but hard. Teaches material well. Minimal busy work. Cons: Can belittle people. Socially conservativepolitically correct, eh? Tough grader. Illusory superiority. Advice: Make sure logic is sound. Proofread, proofread, and then proofread again. Be respectful. Do not make dumb or liberal comments. Do not skip class.
I loved this class, i didn't get a good grade, but the class was one i enjoyed going to. Homework is sometimes hard to understand but help is there if you ask for it. Oral presentation
Dr. Coulter is an extremely intelligent professor and his lectures are very interesting. For this reason, I didn't dread going to class at all. But, he is an impossible grader. He straight up told the class that his grading is subjective. If you don't think the same way he does, then don't expect to do well.
A decent guy that likes to have discussions on the readings. He's kind of opinionated but most people are comfortable with sharing their feedback. Make sure to do the reading and once you understand the logic portion the rest of the class isn't so bad. If you want to get on his good side, talk about hockey.
Dr. Coulter is one of my favorite professors. He makes you work outside of your comfort zone; both on philosophic and social problems. One of the most challenging classes Im taking right now, but you will be amazed at how much you grow and prosper thanks to the wisdom of this professor. Definitely worth the work.
Awesome guy, really really knows his philosophy. Great Catholic view points. Class is discussion based usually. Roughly 1-2 hours of homework per class. One big paper and then a final exam. Never has tests or quizzes or anything. Definitely take as long as you have time to do a lot of homework!
Gives both sides of the argument
Very Fatherly, very tough grader. Homework was tough and lots of it. I am not sure his grading was always fair. However, the discussions, content of lectures, and the readings were all amazing and I greatly enjoyed the class, was always eager to go to class, and never disappointed afterwards. Really smart guy, great professor!
He made the class much more interesting than the other classes. However, with this comes more work. If you want to deepen your thoughts, take Dr. Coulter, but if you want an easier class, take someone else. He is also a lot less weird than the other Philosophy professors, making it easier to communicate with him. There was only 1 paper & 1 exam.
Class lacked diverse perspectives. Class was to myopic.
Great guy but the course is a lot of work, very helpful
Dr. Coulter is arguably the best professor I've had here at UST. Very challenging both in grading and the ideas he presents to you, but you leave every class period smarter than you were 100 minutes earlier. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A in Phil, but do take him if you're willing to get an A- or B+ but be blown away every day.
Dr. Coulter is a great professor. He makes you work for your grade and really wants to help you understand philosophical ideas. He can be very sporadic in his collection of homework, but homework is only worth 10%. He is very nice guy & super approachable in and out of class. Though really be ready to read. Readings average 9-12 pages.
While Dr. Coulter had a entertaining personality and quick wit he gives his philosophy class a abundance of "busy-work" homework. His classes are lecture heavy and are sometimes scattered making it hard to understand the topics presented. Just know what you're getting into before taking his class.
Dr. Coulter really knows what he's talking about and is a good professor. Some of the homework felt useless at times but it really helped in the long run. He is interesting to listen to and is very funny at times. Expect about 3 hours of homework per week.
Dr. Coulter is easily the best professor i have had at St. Thomas so far. He teaches philosophy in an unbiased way, focusing on the search for the truth and pushing students to look at both sides of an argument in order to allow them to form their own opinions based in logic and reasoning. He is funny and sets clear grading criteria.
Dr. Coulter is a decent professor, though sometimes he can be quite vague especially when talking about logic exercises. You will get the hang of it though. He has us write a one-page paper every week and the essays are really long, a lot of them are boring. His lectures are boring too, but he is a decent professor.
Dr. Coulter's class was the hardest class I have taken at St. Thomas. There is a lot of reading and writing. He grades very harshly without a lot of explanation. The class is very dry, and your grade comes from few things. Studying for the exams isn't helpful because he likes to make it very specific.
Nice man, but besides that, not a good teacher. You get a lot of hw and readings every night
I loved Dr. Coulter, one of the best profs at UST. He's a tough grader but really makes sure you understand the material. It's ALOT of reading, but it was all super interesting so I didn't have a problem with it. I didn't get the grade I wanted but the value of what I learned was better than the grade.
Dr. Coulter is a great professor! Lots of reading, but it's definitely manageable. He has a heavy focus on logic in the beginning, but it sets you up for success at the end of the semester. He focuses on several different philosophical topics and makes it interesting. No tests, several pop quizzes, one big paper, homework every day.
Coulter's an all around beauty. Makes class fun and gets people involved in discussions and arguments and doesn't ever judge other's opinions even if they're different from his own. Also does a great job explaining all material. Lots of reading and writing is due every class period with 1 big essay but not tests. Cool guy, loves hockey and his job.
Dr. Coulter is one of the most caring professors I have had in all of my college years. His lectures are interesting and hilarious. It is a lot of work but in the end, it is worth the pain for the amount of knowledge you get out of this class.
Dr. Coulter is hands-down the best professor I have had at St. Thomas thus far. Although there's a lot of readings, I have learned most in his class out of all the courses I have taken. He is always willing to help and is very approachable. His class was also very interesting because he choose interesting topics and he is extremely funny.
The best teacher I have ever had, knows his stuff and really cares. If you dont like interesting lectures and just want an easy A then he isnt for you. Otherwise, take his class at all costs
If you really like philosophy and theology, this is the guy for you! He can be funny if you share his sense of humor, which I did not. He never cared enough to learn my name (but knew everyone else's, so that's nice). He also never gave feedback on any assignments even if you went to talk to him about it.
I highly recommend avoiding this professor. The grading criteria is unclear, he's unfriendly to his students, and expects an unrealistic amount of work from a 100-level course. Unless you're actually passionate about philosophy, which few of us are considering it's a mandatory class, do yourself a favor and stay away.
He made it very clear from the beginning that we were not friends and that made him hard to approach. I started the class with a 47% because we werent given criteria for the homework so he would give us bad grade but never tell us what to fix. Hes got a funny sense of humor but I would avoid taking him for a 100 level class
Best Professor at UST. Convinced me to change my major and was one of the more inspirational figures I've ever had in the classroom
Best teacher you will ever have.
This is primarily a freshman course. You have to do the homework to really get good at it. Over time, homework became much longer and more intense; but also easy to do because youve had so much practice at it. Coulter is intimidating at first, but he warms up eventually. He often tells funny stories about his life which made the class enjoyable
Dr. Coulter is a wonderful and interesting man. He leads meaningful discussions and chooses good stuff to read.
Dr. Coulter seems like a nice man at first, but beware he gets nasty fast. He has pop quizzes frequently and he will randomly call on you to present your premisses and then proceed to personally attack you for them. Dr. Coulter will make you think about things you have never thought about before....like dropping out within the first two weeks.
