Very rude, snobby; Discourages questions in class. All around mean guy
Great notes, super hard exam, sarcastically funny
dake's section usually gets a higher class average than the other
don't take him....
Awesome Teacher, Nice Guy
don't take him, take piers!
This guy is bad. Take Piers instead
Can be very humourous, very clear, challenging exams.

Prepared, clear speaker, hard course
Very good notes, clear explanation but hard exams
just luuuuuuuuuuv his teaching. clear, funny, now w/ the mustache even hotter :D
great prof!!
does not treat everyone equally
a very effective instructor, very interesting course
my favorite prof. just luv him :D
DON'T TAKE HIM! I FAILED BECUZ OF HIS HARD EXAMS! He is crazy and fast.... teaches a lot but most of them will not be in exam! u guys taking him... good luck -_-
i prefer piers...dake teaches too fast
tough course...but he gives clear notes
Very hard exams. Ok notes, but Piers' lectures are much better than his. Treat girls 100x better than guys.
hard exams....mean and not helpful to student
HE IS HELPFUL,BUT I HAVE TO SAY PIERS IS A BIT NICER THAN DAKE. BOTH DAKE AND PIERS GIVE GREAT NOTES AND LECTURES. HE TALKS FASTER THAN PIERS, BUT SOMETIMES HE'S MORE DETAILED.
Good notes. Guy is kind of full of himself and evil but not particularly irritating.
Cause he went to an IVY league school makes him better! my a$$. he is too full of himself. Someone help him take that potatoe out of his hole.
fast and not so clear
Very intimidating at first. Warns you about the course's difficulty. Excellent teacher and is clear. Exams. though hard, test understanding, not memorization.
good prof. really enjoyed his teaching
helpful, but kind of MEAN....says that "no answer keys to prob sets make u learn better"...WTF of a theory is this
excellent notes and excellent prof. might seem like an **** at first but really knows what he is doing. even the dummies can understand him!
I have to agree that both Piers and Dake are good chem teachers. However, I like Dake better because his voice is much clearer and easy to understand. This course is meant to be hard, dont take it unless you want to get in biochem :)
He is one of the best profs I have ever had. His notes are complete and clear. I liked the fast pace of his lectures.
he subbed for Piers once, and I found his lectures just as clear, if not better paced. with piers retired, I'd take dake over a rookie any day
Definitely a challenging professor teaching challenging subject matter. Very clear enunciation, but a bit brisk in pace. Not very approachable.
Presents materials with confidence and clarity. Well paced. Actually spends time going over exam questions. Made organic chemistry very enjoyable, though the exams were just plain HARD.
Very clear teaching, well paced and wants to impart indepth knowledge to students. Great attitude, enthusiastc about subject and teaching. Awesome prof, but be warned: the course IS hard. LOTS of memorization.
He is a great prof. His lectures are well paced, and he teaches with confidence and enthusiasm. He's always willing to answer students' questions in or outside of class. The course is not easy, but I loved it.
Great lecturer. Was too fast with the material near the end of the course. Very confident and articulate person but can be a **** sometimes and his arrogance started to show at the end of the semester
No Comments
He seems to be impatient and rude when students ask him question, especially one on one. He has no respect for students.
very patient and helpful, not at all arrogant. makes you figure out the answers yourself. a very good prof!!!! his voice is clear and he does not mumble like other profs.
He might be a good researcher, but he is definitely a bad teacher. He is impatient, he is mean, and he does not support students.
I had him a few years ago and while he may seem intimidating now he is THE best organic chem prof I could have asked for. All my advanced organic chem courses came easier to me after having Dake. I HIGHLY recommend him!
What an excellent lecturer - that's what I thought before I actually spoke to him in person, one-on-one. He explains the material well, but makes you feel stupid and insignificant when you ask him questions. Please, spare me the attitude.
Horribly awful and sickenning prof. Makes students feel inadequate and stupid. Rushes through material and doesn't answer questions. If you are in his lecture sections, switch or be a genious who can teach yourself the information!
A competent prof. Very well organized and well paced lectures. Once of the best prof I've had since first year so far. If you're in his class the midterm only gets harder, and the final really will give you a blow!
MEAN. I can't believe a professor can show absolutely no respect to students. Avoid him!
If you are a girl (esp Asian), you'd think that he's a great prof and helpful and all that. If you are a guy (esp Asian), prepare for some treatments. Not trying to be mean, just the way he is. So from the ratings below, you can see who is who.
Very good and helpful prof... but makes REALLY HARD midterms and final... you think you know all the material by looking at his notes?? wait until u see his midterms and final.........
Great Prof. The course is very fast paced but he covers everything you need to know in class. Midterms/Finals are hard but fair. Personally I think he's very approachable (and he remembers your name). Btw, He tends to tell "sadistic jokes", depending on your taste...
strongly agreed with the comment below: he is nice to you only if you are a girl or non-asian.

Although Dake treats people with the all the respect of a tiger devouring its prey, his class is still one of the best I have gone to. He gives great examples, questions that make you think, and real-life applications of o-chem. Plus he finishes the course faster, leaving time for review. I suggest taking Love's class and sitting in on Dake's.
For those who did not have Dake before, the pace may appear very fast. But at the end, the fast pace helps you a lot to prepare for the exams. The midterm exams are hard, harder than C203. But the final is much better although not easy. This course is very hard course, but you learn a lot from it.
he seems to know the subject well, good lecture notes, midterms reasonably tested my knownledge
Chem 203/204 are serious courses. It's unfortunate that some people seem to air their frustrations with the material by insulting the prof. Dr. Dake gave clear, organized lectures, answered questions in class with relevant examples, was approachable in his office, and cared enough to learn students names. The exams were not easy but certainly fair.
Notes were reasonably clear and fairly well explained. However, he's arrogant and condescending and doesn't provide effective help to students. Even though I did well in his class, it was unpleasant. Likes to play favorites with honors students.
The best lecturer I've ever had, but also the the most condescending and arrogant prof in the world.
HE IS AN INCONSIDERATE PROF!
best lecturer in ubc
Dr. Dake is GREAT!!! love his somewhat sarcastic comments, and he was always ready to help if you had any problems with the material. Best chem prof up to date :) :)
Very competent prof, best prof up to date. Notes are worth so, so much more than the textbook. Study those, pay attention in class and you're all set. Funny prof, and sometimes makes pretty random/hilarious comments. Also, very considerate to questions, and asks for questions frequently.
He is very clear and knows what he is talking about. He responds to emails only if he likes it. He ignores most of help or office hour appointment emails.
Very knowlegdable man! Very will to help even the bad students. Hard but fair exams. Tests your knowledge not memorization. I would love to be his grad student. Can be see as arrogant but well deserved. If you want to actually learn chemistry take him as a prof.
Not a good one. He says he cares his students but when you actually talk to him, he doesn't seen nice at all. Very hard exam and low marks.
The guy is a genius. Stanford Ph D Columbia post doc, enough said. If he seems like he doesn't care, that just means he assumes you already know the stuff and it's trivial. When you ask good questions he's great help.
He never responds to any e-mails. His notes are pretty clear, but he makes his exams way too hard. Super low average on Midterms and Finals. Not recommended.
Very clear lectures. Class average was 8% higher than the other section. Out of a class of 124, 112 students survived to continue on to Chem204. In the other section, only 78 out of 122 students survived. Statistics says it all.
So far into his own world that the average student has no chance of reaching him. Has no sense of humor; his attitude smacks of arrogance. And he doesn't like to teach. But if he didn't, how would you get to see how brilliant he is? Get it?
Not helpful at all. Teaches as though every student spends at least an hour a day studying only his class. Do we really all have that much time for just Chem 203? So high on his horse that it's hard to understand what he's saying. TONS of material.
There is a lot of material to learn in C203, but Dr. Dake does a really great job to provides crystal clear blackboard notes for this tough course. This course is hard, but rewarding. If you are a good student (attends class, takes notes, does prob sets), you can definitely succeed in his class.
by far, Dake is the best prof i've ever had in UBC. He's ridiculously knowledgeable, very clear about what he's talking about. Has an ok sense of humor, and very approachable outside the class. Organic chem is HARD. Try to go to his office hour, and don't get behind. I find his notes are pretty clear, problem sets are quite helpful for exams.
His note were really good, easy to follow, and he had a good sense of humor. Really loves what he does but you can tell that he thinks teaching second year is beneath him. course itself is crazy hard.
This course is very hard and he is a tough prof as well. He makes students feel bad in his class even though you were good at chemistry before.I think we have to really really work hard for his class in order to pass it.
One of the worst professors of anything, anywhere. Arrogance is an understatement; he regards students with a kind of contempt. Some classmates went to his office hours and found his attitude rude and amazingly glib.
At least he's better than Bates. He provided challenging question to prepare us instead of popping random questions like Bates
Yes he is pretty cocky, but he knows how to teach. His exams are hard but fair. Mechanisms can be insane, but then everyone gets them wrong, so its ok. His notes are helpful. If you're in his class, just know that he likes rings a lot. I would take his class again.
He's way better than Bates, period. He is arrogant, but teaches well and will prepare you for the exam.
Be prepared! The course isn't easy and his exams are hard
Great prof. Super super smart. he has many different ways to get his ideas across. THough the exam is hard, he is extremly fair in both marking and making the exam. So long as you have studied hard, things should come ok.
Very righteous attitude. Starts writing notes before class starts so unless you arrive early you are automatically behind. Talks down to students, overall unapprochable.
Elitist. Good at what he does but plays favorite. moody.
He sure knows his stuff, but makes you feel absolutely useless before he will help you out. Very condescending. Gives good notes and holds office hours often.
A great instructor. The course is incredibly hard and he's really scary during class, but if you go to his office hours he's willing to help. Your grade really depends on your effort.
He is an ok prof at teaching the material, isn't absolutely horrible but his midterms and finals are really hard. the averages for the exams are quite low. He seems to love caucasian students. he plays favorites and will stare you down if he doesn't like you. totally unapproachable. used to love O Chem, but made me hate it.
We had him twice this year. He's a bit intimidating and seems to play favorites but I didn't find it a big deal. Doesn't use textbook. If I could do it again, I'd get ahead of the class material asap, like 2 weeks ahead at least. Use online resources and the textbook
Great prof and he really knows his stuff. Frequent quizzes really helped you stay on top of the material. His exams are hard, but they are fair! He also prepares you well for exams. Notes and lectures are better than the textbook, so pay attention in class and study from the notes.
He is too intimidating!! But his arrogant attitude is more humorous than offensive! I HATED the hundreds of inclass quizzes but his lecture notes are crucial for midterms.. midterms and final were the hardest out of all chem classes!! Memorize all the rxns first, than study the peripheral details! I'm so jealous of him for having a thick full hair!
Dake is an excellent instructor; he gave clear lecture notes and was very helpful during office hours. Also, the frequent quizzes force you to stay on top of the material. The exams (especially the final) could have been easier, though...
Honestly the most arrogant person I have ever met. However, this doesn't really affect his ability to be a chemist. It does absolutely affect his ability to teach since he scares off half his students (the ones he does not like). I loved organic chem and still do but he made me dread going to class and his office hours. Best to avoid him.
Very hard course, he goes through the notes extremely quickly, hard tests. But he is such a silver fox. I'd take the course with him again just to look at him. ;)
Not hot. arrogant. fast-paced. plays favorites.
Dake's got a bit more bite than most profs: if you're easily intimidated, good luck. Goes through the notes quickly but thoroughly with lots of examples: if you've got him, shut up and listen, 'cause it's unforgiving if you don't. Don't judge your self-worth through him: respect him but don't revere him, and he'll be just fine.
Dake is the man. Straight up. I don't know why so many people have a problem with him. Yeah, he can be a bit abrasive but it's not in a malicious way. Super helpful, always available for appointments, engaging lectures, hundreds of quizzes for practice. Best prof I've had, hands down.
Great Prof would of had a much lower mark if I weren't in his class
Badass prof but beware; his problems are renowned for their difficulty. And for good reason. Trying to solve his exercises is akin to bashing your head against a brick wall until all that remains is some grey matter and skull. And then afterwards, in the afterlife, being subjected to the laughter of your tormentor.
best prof ever his quizzes are great, some of the questions were even on the midterm! His lecturing is top of the line theres a reason his class got a 74% average in ochem while the rest of the classes got low 60s
Dake is by far the best prof I've ever had. He's concise, clear and funny. He provides an entertaining class and makes ochem interesting rather than scary. His notes are exactly what you need to know for exams.
He does have a bit of an ego, but he is one of the best profs I have had so far at UBC. Definitely cares that you will do well.
I loved having Professor Dake. He made a sincere effort to personally try to learn the names of students. At office hours he is extremely patient and helpful, and tries jokes which unintentionally make me laugh my butt off. I really enjoyed his lecture styles (quizzes were killer but helpful!) and honestly would not have passed OChem without him!
Tough problems sets and tough midterms.
Worst professor ever!
Very amazing prof. Learned so much in his class. Very helpful. He really knows what he is talking about which is very important in this course. He was the best from this term among all the others in Chem 233
Not a terrible prof, but has a large ego and doesn't really help much. Good practice questions though.
Dake is a really good prof to have for 233 if you put in the effort to go to class and keep up with the material. He is the course coordinator and his quizzes are exactly like the exams. He does have a bit of an ego as others have mentioned, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class and he does liven it up with his jokes. Lectures are very comprehensive.
He's a good professor that does well explaining the material, I look forward to having him next year.
He is incredibly smart and knows his stuff, no doubt about it! I commend him for his knowledge. Huge ego though, rather cocky, may come off as downgrading your intellect when you approach him. Like I said, he's super smart and it seems like he doesn't quite understand that you're still in the process of learning and he can make you feel dumb.
The course is designed to be easy. The exams are 100% memorization. Go to lecture because what he says in class will be on the exam. If you have a tablet that can take notes bring that to class because after the second unit he starts jumping around writing on paper gets too messy. You can study for the exam in 2 days and get an A. no pre-readings.
Dake is one of the most unclear professors that I have ever had. We were required to view preclass video's in which we were "taught" the material for the class. Dake simply rambled and scribbled far too quickly to understand and as a result caused the students to review the same videos to understand. Jackie's videos were amazing in comparison
He's the best prof that I've had in my educational career, yet so much sass is given along with his answers to your questions. But make sure you take chem 233 with this guy and no one else. He is sassy which is why you will actually listen in his class.
Probably the best Chem 233 prof you can get. Class average was 72 compared to other sections which were like mid 60s. If you pay attention in class and do the practice problems, you should ace the quizzes and exams.
Great prof. Doesn't waste time going over useless stuff. Classes can be hard to follow if you didnt do the prereadings. I like that he rarely makes mistakes.
Best prof for Ochem. He's the reason I passed. Our class avg was the highest across all the sections. He has a lot of sass but that's what makes him so great! I actually really enjoyed Ochem because of him. Dake > any other Ochem prof any day!
Terrible. The notes are all over the place, unorganized, and expects students to know very specific material we learned two years ago. Mentions a chemical name once, and expects you to know formula, mechanisms and uses for the exam. Very challenging.
Prof. Dake is an awesome prof! He tells you what skills you need to have in order to succeed in the course. Tip: Build on your fundamentals and go from there.
He's a good overall professor bc he's very knowledgeable however sometimes that knowledge leads to him being a little arrogant and condescending. Also sometimes he'll rush through problems and skip steps so either raise your hand in class or go to his office hours. Challenging course for sure.
We started out the semester with a different teacher so for Physical Chemistry and then switched to Dr. Dake for the second half, and he has saved my Chemistry mark! His teaching style is easy to follow and it is clear that he really enjoys teaching us. Will joke around with the class and his office hours, he hands out candy! Great teacher! :)
Obviously organic chem is hard, but Dr. Dake is incredibly helpful and makes learning both fun and easy. If you ever need help, his office hours are amazing! He will sit and teach you over and over by helping you through problems until you understand. I 100% recommend taking this course with him!
Dr. Dake is hilarious and very clear in explaining concepts. Best ochem prof our year for sure! Worksheets and quizzes given in class are similar to exams. His sass makes class all the more enjoyable.
Had him for organic chem 233. One thing i have to say about his teaching style is if you want to understand what he is saying in class or videos you gotta be an organic chem expert, otherwise you are doomed.
He's basically a rockstar. If you don't take his section of C233 you're doing yourself a huge disservice. He has an amazing sense of humour and is incredibly clear and methodical in his teaching. He spells out exactly how you should approach things. He's also sassy, pop culture savvy and has a flair for cocktails--need I say more? All hail Dake!
Probably the best chem prof I have had at UBC. He's so clear and his lectures are fun. He makes the exams, so his worksheets are really helpful. he's hotttt
He is simply amazing, genius, and passionate!
Organic chemistry with Dake was a breeze. Just watch the pre-videos, attend his lecture, and do the worksheets. Really clear on what is expected on the exams as he writes them for all sections. Super passionate and super sassy. Never a dull moment in his class. Organic chem was my favorite class of the semester. Easy course if you put in the time.
Who said organic chem was hard? JK it is hard but Professor Dake made it so that is it is manageable and easier for students to understand.
Prof Dake is scary. I had O-Chem nightmares. The course is super hard. If you are good at Chem you will prob love Dake. If you are mediocre to bad at it (like me) Dake will make you feel dumb. Maybe I spent too much time staring at this silver fox instead of learning rxns........I did try. Get Wickenden for this course if you can.
To the person below me, how is your performance even correlated to the teaching abilities of Dr. Dake? Dr. Dake is an amazing lecturer, and his averages were the highest among all the other sections in all of the examinations. I found him to be funnty, and really helpful if you had any questions. Course wasn't hard, just had to stay on top.
Sounded condescending to students who clearly didn't look at the material before class and asked basic questions. He sometimes even brushed them off and moved on lol.
Drake shames on people for not knowing stuff (even though they might not major in chemistry) and the course is basically rote learning
If you are not a chemistry major this course is not for you. There is no such thing as partial marks on the midterms, you need to remember mechanisms from chemistry 233, he does not release the answer keys to any of the sample questions or midterms and his notes are all over the place. If you aren't required to take this course, DO NOT take it.
This course is pretty challenging. His notes all over the place and he might briefly mention one thing and on the test he expects you to know everything about it (when he doesn't even teach you or give you notes about it)...................................................... Not all of us are them majors!!!!
condescending. I did well but that's due to the overall structure of the course which is very well put together in a manageable way with lots of resources, and not to do with his teaching.
I use to like chemistry but not anymore thank to Greg Dake and his condescending teaching style. It would help if he tried to remember that it's our first time seeing these concepts even though it is his millionth.
Accessible but a little intimidating. Get the feeling he's not great at emotional interactions, especially with anxious or panicky students. However, he's really funny once you realize that and he's also very good at teaching.
Dake's the best chemistry prof i've ever had (i'm writing this having just finished my undergrad). He can be savage most of the time, i've been 'victim'. That being said during office hours, if he notices you're truly struggling with the material, he becomes very kind/patient. And once he sees that you've grasped it, he reverts back to savage mode
he's a good prof. i was on the verge of flunking out of my degree so i would go see him all the time in his office hours. he's really helpful and thanks to him, i graduated. moral of the story: go to office hours and get help if you need it
Piazza has a meme thread. As mentioned, he goes a bit fast and sometimes it's hard to keep up with lectures. That said, GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He's super helpful, and really tries to make sure you understand something. One con is that his notes are a bit wordy (coming from Sammis's class) and clear distinction between examples is almost non existent.
Dr. Dake does come off as condescending, but I think that this attitude is the only way to get students to engage with the lecture material and understand the concepts being taught in class. His notes were mostly written on the chalkboard so get ready to write a lot. That being said, CHEM 330 was a very tough class.
Professor Dake is a good professor. His lectures are lively and he is good at conveying the information you need to know. I wish he was more approachable; he will make fun of you in office hours or after class when you ask him questions. Overall Chem 330 is a very difficult class, be prepared to put in the work if you want to get a B or higher.
I think Dr Dake definitely gets the job done when it comes to making you learn ochem. His lectures are lively and rather engaging. That said, he is known to roast students mercilessly which is funny when you're not the one being roasted. Make sure you go to his office hours with questions prepared so that he doesn't roast you for asking a dumb one
He looks like a super bully acid with low pka ,makes me become a deprotected spicy amine.
Dake is an incredible professor. Can be very intimidating but is absolutely amazing at giving you the help you need. 10/10 Office hours 11/10 lecutres. He is hilarious and is very clear on what he needs from you. 330 is a very hard course but I am so grateful Dake teaches it. I hope to take him again. Put in the work every week and you will be fine
Difficult course, content heavy. Dake's lectures were disorganized, he didn't always go off note packages. He goes incredibly fast and has a VERY nasty personality. A "know it all" attitude that discourages asking questions. The weekly assignments were good for reinforcing knowledge. The course had lots of potential. Shame it wasn't taught better.
Dr. Dake is hands down an amazing lecturer. My only gripe with him is that he can be very rude to people in OH which can turn people off from asking questions. Apart from that, this class if great if you want to really get into heavy ochem. It's difficult in the moment but come finals season you'll realize that it's actually fairly doable. Goodluck
Despite struggling with this course, I really respect Dr. Dake and his teaching style and I genuinely enjoyed learning ochem with him. His exam questions test the concepts of class examples. He can come off as intimidating at first, but really he just wants people to do ochem right and has high expectations of you if you choose to take this course.
