rude, arrogant, very unhelpful, has office hours but keeps his door shut
You have to warm up to this prof, may not be worth it to many people. He unbelievably smart though.
Knows what he's talking about, but doesn't teach it that great. Tests require a lot of work, occasionally with not enough time. Have to do a research project on a company and present it to the class. Deals alot with eco theory, ESPECIALLY John maynard Key

He doesn't know how to teach. I learned nothing from him - if you want to teach yourself Economics, then take his class, and be prepared to learn everything on your own, straight from the text book. Otherwise, run the other way!!! He was AWFUL!!

I remember practically nothing about this class or from this class, which can't be a real good sign.
The opportunity cost of taking this class is that you will learn nothing about economics. Teaching is an unpleasant disruption to his day.I know why he's here, though; the old saying "those who can't, teach" applies.
Arrogant, unclear, inflexible, and totally in love with the sound of his own voice. Sets students up to fail rather than to succeed. Avoid this professor.
Teaching is OK. I have learned several things from his classes, HOWEVER is never there at office hours, and feels as if teaching and helping students is one of the least important things in his day. He also is VERY arrogant and full of him self.
VERY BORING!!!!...oral presentation, no homework...just boring classes lots of notes...likes to hear himself talk... tests are very long not enough time....
these ratings are CRAZY!! I almost feel as though it's not about the same prof. i'm taking!! I thought this was one of the most interesting classes. he is SO insightful, and his material is extremely interesting. shows some great films too. Tests are a little hard, but he scales. Answers questions VERY well. You can tell he is very into the subj.

Actually he is a teacher that you can listen to because he actuallys asks for your opinion and interacts with you. Not as boring as people play him out to be.
He was pretty easy, I think I got an A or a B+. He's a pretty good teacher and he helps you if you need anything as long as you make an effort and show up to class. Alot of people on here say hes arrogant and unhelpful, but those must be all the people that never show up to class and then try to get him to help them out. He doesnt really tollerate that. But the class is pretty easy, hes really smart, explains everything clearly and wants you to appreciate the concepts in the class.
Very boring and went on and was very repetitve in his notes. His attempts at in class "debates" were pathetic. Tests are very hard, and not enough time, but he does curve. Make sure you read the textbook. He does try to be very helpfull though, and is always asking for questions from the class.
This guy kills me. I really dread going to his class every Monday and Wednesday. He talks and talks and talks about everything nobody cares about and then tests you on the most technical thing ever. He does try to help with curves, luckily my whole class is doing horrible so the curve isn't too bad. Its still a rough class. Hes boring as hell!
If I could fake my own death to get out of this class I would do that. This class almost causes me to go into a coma. Holiday comming up? Expect him to try and make double back to back classes to you dont miss his leasons. AVOID!!!
wow..how boring can we get. weekly quizzes that are way too hard, midterm and final. plenty of extra credit if u wanna write 4 page papers. Try and take some one else. Nice guy but very boring
Professor Defreitas is not as bad as people make him out to be. Atleast you can understand him and he teaches very well. Hes not that boring you just have to put in the effort. Read the pages assigned and study and you will do well.
Avoid at all costs. His terrible teaching skills make this class twice as hard as it should be. Rediculous tests, boring lectures. Weekly quiz as well. Worst teacher I've had so far at Hofstra; was not friendly during his office hours either. Take my advice -- Stay away from him
I'm not gonna lie... this was a very hard class. Quizzes every week, a HEAVILY CURVED MIDTERM and tough final. However Dr. Defreitas offers a ton of extra credit and it's well worth it since the points go right onto your final grade. Earned a B- in the course but because of ectra credit i got an A.
He knows his material, INSIDE OU T UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS. CANNNOT teach it though. You teacher yourself...this would be fine if we got paid too.
he is boring! doesnt explain well... its an interesting topic but he completely kills it... tests are hard and on way too many things to remember
African Labor Economics... now that sounds interesting... He's a good guy, who's an easy grader when it comes to papers, scales tests like crazy and gives extra credit. He's wicked hard, but then I end up getting an A. same thing happened in ECO 001, hard class, A grade. His powerpoint slides are excellent. Take this for CC credit.
I took him for a labor studies cluster. Nice man. SO SO BORING. all he does is reads off the slideshow he gets from the book website. I can do that at home. POINTLESS. Dont use book, use book study guide. Assigns homework for first class. He didnt even check it. WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN.
very confusing. his tests and quizzes are usually hard. i dont recommend takin him
Believes his class is the only class. Requires alot of your time. Easy grader though.
I dreaded going to this class. Two hours of hell. Too boring. Material seems easy but then you dont do that well...
I usually dont post bad things about professors however i did not like his teaching style. He knows his stuff but need to be more lively. Hard class
Horrible teacher, thinks everyone in his class is an economic major. class is very hard and hes a hard grader.
Worst Professor Ever!!!!!!! sorry we dont all worship Mr. Colander and his precious textbook but were not all surrounding out entire lives with economics!! His extra credits are nearly impossible his powerpoints are over 100 slides long and he expects you to memorize EVERYTHING!!
AVOID! Very hard. Should be teaching at a more challenging university. Tests are impossible. Very boring class.
He gives an enormous amount of work, its REDICULOUS! Easy grader, but I worked my butt off, and got all As. I dreaded going to class, &he makes SUCH a big deal of attendance. He was by far my most boring teacher. Some of the readings were interesting, but he gave so many assignments that many times i contemplated dropping out.
AFRICA AMERICAN LABOUR ECONOMICS IS A VERY IN-DEPT COURSE...Professors Gives Lots Of Reading+ Other Works SO Expect To Work Your Butt OFF! Professor Teaches with 100+ Slides Per Class Which is a Big Negative But If You Work Hard You Should Be Able To Pull Out A GOOD GRADE!
He is a very kind man, & extremely intelligent. He is always willing to help, but has very high standards and expects a lot of students. Quite a bit of busy work, tests are hard but curved, and there's 1 short paper; a lot of work, but a very fair grader. If you're interested and show effort, he will go above and beyond for you.
Bad News: Tons of work. Good News: You don't have to do most of it. He assigns tons of reading and also assigned a book report. I did not read any of the textbook assignments or the book for the book review, but managed to still get an A. Study only the powerpoint slides that he posts online and you will be fine. Class is very boring.
This class was so EASY, all his quizzes we're open book. His midterm and final were hard but if you read the textbook you'll be fine. He flies through the power points you'll never be able to copy anything. He also gives you alot of extra credit opportunities and drops your lowest quiz grade. Class is extremely boring though.
Two quizzes (lowest grade dropped), family labor history research paper, book review paper, midterm, & final. Prof. DeFreitas is very intelligent, committed, & will answer all questions. Lessons are clearly presented in PPT slides. Participation appreciated. Very interactive. Requires hard work, but people take him more than once. Excellent Prof.
This professor is ridiculous. I had an A all class, got an A on all the quizzes and the midterm, even before the curve. Did pretty well on the final as well and only wind up with a B. And everyone else did worse. This guy is a joke.
I wouldn't usually go out of my way to rate a professor, but if you are not a good test taker- DO NOT TAKE HIM. I would study for hours, pull all nighters just for the quizzes, know the material and yet still failed his quizzes. He has 3 quizzes (one is dropped) and two exams. It's more like an adv. eco history class and not a 101.
Where to start. if you dont like reading, avoid this class, tests are ridiculous to study for 100ish pages of reading plus 100 PP slides, PP slides often dont match up with the readings, teaches this class like a grad class, believes his class is the only one you're taking, AVOID AT ALL COSTS
To get a really good grade you have to do all the readings. Don't buy the textbook though- only buy the textbook guide. They give you concise summaries that I would recommend memorizing. DeFreitas teaches via slideshows that are easy to understand and give you supplement to the readings.
Reading the textbook was more helpful than the power points he used every class. So if you don't go to class and spend time reading your textbook you should do fine. But unfortunately attendance is mandatory so you spend a lot of unnecessary time outside of class to get a decent grade.
He is a nice guy, the problem is that his class is really boring and the tests are quite difficult. Make sure you do the extra credit.
He offeres a lot of extra credit, but talks more about the history of economics, so his lectures can get super boring. Print out his powerpoint, or take quick notes, because he goes through his slides super fast.
His class covers everything from the start of time it feels, very boring but classes are mandatory. Quick notes, no cellphones or laptops allowed. Quizzes are multiple choice and count: 30% of grade. Tests are very difficult: multiple choice and "essay" which is a graph and short answers based off the graph. Use the study guide book, very helpful.
if he is the only available option , you are better off waiting for the next semester. slides go at bullet speeds in class so its difficult to take notes, he treats it as though people have taken it before an know exactly whats going on, alot of blank faces in that class. would not wish that course on anyone
i never go out of my way to rate a professor but i feel i should warn other students, run! run in the opposite direction, you will be treated like this is the only class that matters, a lot of reading, plenty of quiz and test. you are better off waiting for a better professor. i felt like i was in an advance course
Absolutely not the best professor ever. Majority of the quizzes is based on current news instead of what we learned. If youre someone who dont read the newspaper daily dont expect to get an A in that class. I had it as the very first class of college and its constantly giving me thoughts on transferring. Would not recommend at all.
His class will make your bored to tears. He gives an abundance of homework and he goes through the slides so fast in his lectures that it is impossible to take notes. He gives quizzes and exams on current economic events and not on anything you learn in the actual class. I would 100% recommend another professor if you have the option.
He has very long boring lectures and moves through them very quickly and has test that are completely different from the slides, provides exam review with 100+ slides with no clear guidance on what to study so I would recommend NOT TO TAKE HIS COURSE!!
Super nice guy, took him from Econ 101. He is really smart too. Lectures kinda boring but I liked him a lot
wont let you use a laptop to take notes, but goes so fast to where you cant write down all the notes from his slides. Lectures are so boring if you need extra sleep his class provides the opportunity. Endless amounts of homework online, the discussion questions are actually better.
BORING!!!! Even If he made the class interesting you would not be able to take away anything from it. No computers for note taking but teaches/talks very very fast. Refused to help when asked. Even scholar students will fail his tests. JUST DONT DO IT!
Idk why there are so many bad reviews. he is GREAT. Truly cares, helps, curves quizzes/tests, very nice. Yes, he gives lots of hws but they are all EASY. His exams are kinda hard but not impossible. Trust me, I was so scared to take his class due to the reviews but I got a B lol. He's a great choice. He also negotiates! - drops lowest quiz grade.
Prof DeFreitas really cared. My favorite teach. Thanks Prof D!
Very kind in a grandfatherly manner. Loved every minute.
This is a very king and thoughtful professor. He gives extra credit and as long as you do the homeworks and papers you should be fine. All the quizzes are relatively simple and are based on the readings which you need for the homework. Quizzes are based on powerpoints and homeworks. Overall a great class and a great professor.
He has extremely unrealistic expectations for assigned workload. He expects you to do more than there is time in the day. His lectures are long and gruesome and most of the test is on the readings anyway. His quizzes and tests are very specific when he says to study a huge range of things (powerpoints/a million readings), its impossible.
Nice Professor, easy and interesting class overall. The exam reviews are hard as his study guide is 100 slides, but the exams and quizzes themselves are pretty easy, plus he's forgiving grader. One book review, but it's not too long and you get to pick from a list of good books. Not too demanding yet you'll still learn plenty. Would recommend.
He clearly knows his stuff but I found it hard to keep up with him. His exams are extremely hard and homework is due every Sunday. Would not recommend taking this proffesor
The class isn't easy and can get very technical but he does a good job of breaking down the concepts. There is online hw that is graded, but it will help you with the class. Most of your grade is based on the midterm and final so you really need to do well on those. He knows his stuff and if you pay attention and study hard, you'll pass
Dr. DeFreitas is a very kind, understanding, and knowledgeable man! The material is difficult itself, but he tries his best to make sure you understand it. Lots of extra credit opportunities!! Weekly online hw assignments. The quizzes and exams arent too bad if you study hard and pay attention to his lectures.
Super nice person, you can tell he really cares about the subject. Not a super difficult class a lot is review of what I learned in high school. Most homework is due on Saturdays. No makeup quizzes or homework, write papers for EC. Honestly a really good teacher. Tests mostly multiple choice.
I wouldn't go out of my way to rate a professor. It is very clear he cares about the class but he is not clear with anything he mentions. He speeds through about 40 slides each class. You can study everything he suggests but you still won't do well on tests/quizzes. DO NOT take this class if you haven't already learned everything about economics.
Nice professor but tests and quizzes are hard. Very few questions so if you get two or three wrong it already puts you at 70%. Homework assignments and discussion boards will save your grade in this class so DO THEM.
I would recommend trying to find a different professor to take this course. He knows a lot about the subject, but cannot find a way to translate this knowledge to his students. Tests are quite difficult and based on hundreds of powerpoint slides and textbook pages, and the lectures are painful to sit through. However, extra credit is available.
Hes not a bad prof, the class is def lecture-heavy over 100+ slides for some chapters. The quizzes were only 20 questions and you have to carefully read the textbook and the footnotes or some questions. The discussion boards were fine, be detailed with your answer and your peer responses . 2 of the discussion were a bit tough but not impossible.
Dr. Defreitas is an awesome professor and made me finally understand economics. I took AP Macro in high school and barely passed it, but I did very well in this course as professor Defreitas explains the material very well. Be prepared for some homework that is based on the textbook. There are also several extra credit opportunities.
Talks a lot and goes fast through the slides. ONLY short and difficult pop quizzes and no retakes under any circumstance. Challenging chapters to read before every class. Long DB posts every other week. Assigns optional extra credit papers. Do them. PLEASE, DEPEND ON YOUR CLASSMATES. THEY WILL BE YOUR LIFELINE. Or maybe just avoid his class.
Defreitas is a very nice man who knows what he's talking about. His pop-quizzes and midterm/final are very difficult despite how much studying you do. Homework assignments can be hours long because he assigns 90 minute videos to watch. If you struggle with economics ,find another professor.
Defreitas was the WORST professor Ive ever taken. Hes incredibly hard to understand and just drones on during lectures. His exams are impossible to study for (and he gives no study guides) and youll be lost if you miss even ONE class. Never, never take him if you have the option of LITERALLY anyone else.
DeFreitas really wants the class to succeed. His grading policy is generous & he offers ample extra credit opportunities. However, he is unnecessarily unclear on what we should comprehend for the pop-quizzes & exams. So, this would include reading several pages of text and power-point slides, guessing what he will put on a mere 21-question exam.
I should start out with the only positive... all quizzes and tests get nicely curved (especially if you do really bad). Although DeFritas is very passionate about macro, he does not teach the course and is very unclear on the material. He will not tell you what you need to know for the exams and makes them very hard. His HW is also long & tedious!!
Don't take him unless you're really interested in Economics. His lectures are informative but boring, the discussion board homework gets overwhelming, and he is misleading at times. He says that there will be pop quizzes but then tells us when they are. However, he is unbiased and knows a lot, but he makes the class unnecessarily difficult.
Please avoid this teacher at all costs. Never in my life has a teacher been so bad at explaining a curriculum. Pop quizzes eevry other week. Expects you to already know all of the materials/ terms for economics.
His discssion boards are tedious and he never teaches students anything. He thinks everyone memorized the textbook.
He cannot teach anything. Must memorize and then some because you need to have an eco background for his way of teaching.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING THEN FAIL!!
Cons Bi-weekly pop quizzes, discussion posts are long and tedious, lectures are boring and very non-informative, very textbook heavy and asks questions directly from the textbook, never answers questions clearly. Pros Very generous curves (usually a letter grade bump), attendance alone is 15% of your grade, he will help during an exam
Don't do it if you actually want to learn about economics because he will ruin your experience. Weekly discussions that are far too impossible to complete, weekly quizzes after each topic, and you need to know the topics before discussing them, which is very inconvenient especially since it was my first semester.
He's a nice enough guy - kinda awkward. Bad at teaching, doesn't give substantial feedback, exams are hard. Grateful I got a B because I've absorbed genuinely 0% of that material. Lectures all class with slides, and you must read the textbook on your own time. Decent professor only if you're already good with economics.
Entire class is just slides that aren't helpful at all tbh. Prepare to read the whole textbook and for him not to teach you anything. Exams are difficult and are only based on the textbook. Prof is alright, just reads off the slides the whole time and CANT TEACH. He gives no useful feedback- be prepared to not learn anything.
He's one of those professors who thinks his class is the only class you need to graduate. Pop quizzes every other class that are legit impossible to complete, no clear structure to his lectures, and barely anybody did well on his exams. You ABSOLUTELY have to study every night or you won't pass but even if you do study, you may not pass.
He is a very nice guy and gives extra credit, but he gives no feedback on what the tests will be on and the tests are usually 20-21 questions. He says to study powerpoint and textbook which is a lot of stuff to memorize especially if you are new to eco. Doesn't really teach effectively catering to those who are newer to the subject.
For someone new to economics, it almost felt as if I needed to have preexisting knowledge prior to taking this course, even though it was an introductory class. The lectures and presentations were very long and a lot of material, so if you don't look things over or study (especially in the textbook!!), it will be very difficult. Somehow got a B.
Nice professor, chill guy. You learn a lot. Interesting material and class discussions. Class is easy. Your grade is 2 discussion boards, 2 quizzes, 2 tests, participation, and a book review. Extra credit. There's a textbook, but it's not necessary. He covers a LOT of material, so take notes and/or review the slides, and you're good to go.
The class material by itself is not difficult, however, if you have 0 knowledge on economics or tend to not pay attention, do NOT take him. All of the tests are on paper, and you'll very rarely use canvas for anything, unless a discussion board or a homework is due. Great professor if you have a prior knowledge in economics.
Horrendous time in this guys class. Acts as if students have studied economics for their entire life meanwhile it is an entry level class. Quizzes are 10 questions based on over 100 slides of notes which are explained as fast as possible and never gone over again after that. Take any other class.
ruined my college experience
omg if you don't have prior knowledge of economics DO NOT take him .. he is a nice guy, but his class is so boring i zone out every second. his class is just slides and is extremely boring and its hard to pass
OMG please do not take. His class is extremely difficult, especially if you are taking economics for the first time ever. Exams are very difficult and don't reflect what was learned in class. Trying to understand what he is lecturing about would make you go crazy. Take anybody else.
Receiving an A+ did not mean anything to me; I only got that grade because I studied so hard. The amount of studying is not needed for an introductory class. Defreitas makes the class much harder than it needs to be. He fits 3 units worth of material into a 10 question quiz. That said, he does grade on a pretty generous curve.
