a great and witty teacher also took hist 17c and hist 173with him and enjoyed immensely
A great professor, makes the class a lot of fun, he plays music before each class,

Very relevant course lecture, informative and even entertaining (on an intellectual level).
prolly the best prof i hav had hear. easy n concise. good lectures. one of the few classes i was excited to go to. lectures kept me thinking. eaasy to understand and even easier to do well.
very good teacher, easy, nice, he let me take my midterm another day bc i had to get my wisdom teeth out and i told him i wont be able to study..he didnt even ask for a doctor's note
Awesome class. The course material is very interesting, and the tests are really easy and straight forward. The reading is awesome- Guns, Germas and Steel is a great book. Pay attention and you will have an easy A, and learn a lot too!
Hard to keep up with the reading, do the book first, then the reader.Lectures are very well organized and easy to understand.Essay is relatively easy,no research necessary.Gives a new more interesting spin on world history.
he is a really nice professor. His lectures are really organized and the essay is about controversial issues. If you pay attention in class, and skim over the readings, you will do fine
cool guy, really enthusiastic about the material.. the class was more history-based than i expected and a lot of reading but it's interesting
He is a great prof. Lectures are really organized and interesting. Exams are really straigtforeward and predicable, just make sure to go over details and the big picture.
he's a funny guy, just make sure you take notes and go to class, his tests are lecture-based but reading helps too
Two papers make up your entire grade for the class, he's a fair grader and expects you to include what he has taught in class in your papers, so showing up is pretty important. Funny guy, but lectures can kind of drag at times.
Lectures are awesome...plays classic rock and other good tunes before class. Grades fairly. Beware grade is based upon one midterm one final paper...don't f*ck it up.
Very interesting lectures and readings but the grade is based on only a midterm and takehome final. The midterm is pretty straight forward but i felt lost on what to do on the final, the topic felt to big and needed to be focused, even though i wrote 11 pages i still feel i left out alot.
sorta boring at times, avoid a TR lecture time, but it's not impossible to stay awake. do the readings and the class shouldn't be too tough
Not the most interesting subject but made lectures fun with stories and movie clips. Go to lecture and study notes and you'll do fine.
this man is the MOST boring professor i've had in two years. he drones on for the entire hour. i keep falling asleep in class.
History of Environ. Easy but boring class. Graves is such an easier grader. Grades easy on paper and for senior thesis that an easy 6 units
Probably one of the more boring professors, yet he is nice. Tons of information to know, go to lecture and read the parts he talks about. Key to have a good T.A. His jokes don't fly, but he's fun to laugh at.
go to lecture and do fine in the class since all the information you need to go comes out of it. graves is a nice guy, a bit looney looking, but he's a good professor. handouts are given for the midterm and final so there's no reason for you not to get a good grade.
excessive note taking but is explained clearly so you just have to keep up and you'll be set for the tests. dont even bother buying the reader, nothing from it ever came up in class or on tests. very nice guy and is passionate about the subject, made the subject interesting for me even though i never took an interest in it before.
I LOVE PROFESSOR GRAVES!!! He is so cute, so nervous when he lectures, but they are pretty interesting. His tests are very fair, all you have to do it go to lecture. The readings are interesting, though i NEVER needed the reader. I may have opened it once and still got an A. I recommend taking his class. :)
This guy is Larry Bird. He is a great teacher, Kinda boring but he is fun to make fun of. He can never figure out the micraphone and it is great. I want to have his babies.
He makes class interesting. Format of lectures and tests is easy to follow. Must study notes. He is very interested in his students and is very helpful outside of class. Excellent!

A great class to take for people in all majors.
doesn't he look like the guy from the Garfield cartoons? i LOVE being an ES major and i HATED this class. he sucked, the whole experience was non educational. DO NOT BUY THE READER. worst 30 bucks you'll ever spend...i NEVER opened it and got an A. don't t
Great class, interesting lectures, plays music before class. gives you the test questions before the exam, very clear lectures.
WILL SPEND TIME WITH DURING OFFICE HOURS
He looks like Larry Bird, or Jim from Garfield. He's a great teacher, makes everything interesting, very helpful, well organized, shows passion in subject matter. It was a pleasure being in his class.
Outstanding! Interesting lectures & makes good use of slides and maps to highlight US History. Highly Recommended.
He has such a monotone voice!! It makes the class SO SO boring! Not a very...enthralling class...interesting readings nonetheless. And he does not test on the Reader...so don't even buy it.
He is such an awesome guy and has done some really cool stuff. Yeah he can be a bit monotone but his class is really interesting and easy because he just tells stories all day. And they are interesting. So take the classes.
is more concerned with students learning the material than grades. only one midterm and one take home final. i didnt do ANY of the readings and got a B+. Interesting material you wont learn in any other course.
Graves is a funny funny man! His demeanor is priceless. His personality grows on you. Lectures are somewhat stressful since you have to rigorously take notes to keep up. Also had him for the honors section. Good experience and very friendly and helpful man.
He is a cool professor. Make sure to take notes and I found it easier to type than to write for his notes. Overall good class if he is teaching.
i loved this class! he made the lectures interesting and fun. i never missed a class. the tests are fair as long as you study the ID's and know the broad/major points of the readings. do not buy the reader (you don't need it)! i never read anything and got a B in the class. i highly recommend this class!!
At first I wasn't that into the class.. but I had an awesome TA, and then the course topics got really interesting (especially after the midterm). The tests are essay, which seems daunting, but you can be so much more thorough with it, and hopefully your TA will help out a lot. Ended up with an A, loved the class, great guy- and he's funny!!
this class was taught at a fast pace, but was really interesting. its basically a lot of memorizing information for his exams. so if you can memorize, youre set.
One of my fav's. Looks like Larry Bird (and acknowledges it). Passionate about the material and very personable. Only work is 1 midterm and a take home final (10pg paper). Can't think of a nicer professor. Kinda goofy at times.
Loved this class!! one of my favorites here at UCSB. Lectures are really interesting, Alot of reading but it also is really interesting. Only a midterm and take home final. Really Approachable and passionate teacher! I learned so much relevant to my life, take this class!!!
A true southern gentleman. Graves is funny without trying to be. He lectures straight through but for some reson he doesn't get boring like most other profs. Very approachable. In class midterm and a 10-13 page take home final. Gives you all the info in lecture, I only refrenced the book
Great professor. This was by far my favorite class at UCSB. He is very interesting, clear, and you can tell he really enjoys the subject matter. I highly recommend Graves!
lots of memorizing
He's way cool and he's funny. He always tries to make lecture fun which makes it more interesting.
requires ALOT of studying.
This class is not that easy. A lot of reading is required.
if you are going to take this class make sure you get a good TA. my TA sucked so much. He graded really hard. I'm an ES major so i had to take the class, but if you aren't I wouldn't take it.
GREAT CLASS AND GREAT PROFESSOR. I have taken 2 history courses with Graves and have absolutely loved both courses! He is a very entertaining lecturer and really knows his stuff. He is also very passionate about what he teaches and is always willing to help students out if they have any questions. I highly recommend any classes taught by Graves.
"must take" for any conscious person. Approach is amazingly broad. Uses humor, artistic touch and his true concern is to be fair in his own presentation of the information (which he is). The beauty of the class resonates in the readings and what he wants in the papers. He asks for reflection on the subject to be felt on a deeper personal level.
Decent Class. Was very uninterestd going into the class, so if you like the subject i'm sure you'll love the class. Only a midterm and take home final-Don't mess it up, and spend alot of time prepping for both
he looks like jon arbuckle! class was a bit boring at first but got much more interesting in the second half, based on reading 2 books and IDs in lecture. he can be a bit dull but hes a nice guy and the material is pretty good.
Most topics were interesting but can be a bit much for a 50min class. 2/3 of the grade rides on the take home final, so the insecurity of your grade until the very end can be though for some people. Must attend lectures because no textbook. Just skim the required reading books for the paper and you'll do fine. Nice guy, reasonable grader.
Definitely not all he's cracked up to be. Focuses way too heavily on infrastructure/environment, completely ignores politics/ideas/themes. Complacent about giving unfairly mediocre grades. Readings useless, esp Human Trad, never needed for assignments or even referenced in lecture. Was expecting more from this class. Wouldn't take again.
Great professor, probably most enjoyable class i've had at ucsb. Graves is fair and helpful. There is a prompt for midterm so you know what to expect. Final is a take home 10-13 page paper with prompt as well. I went to lecture and read briefly and got an A-, reccomend taking this class and learning about our state!
He is a very easy going teacher, and there were NO EXAMS, just papers! No rigid dates/places to memorize. I learned alot because you have alot of freedom in the papers to explore ideas. The atmosphere is very laid back, he is extremely approachable and friendly, highly recommended!
His lectures are outlined clearly with key words and all you have to worry about is taking down the notes. Final was a 10 page essay, all I did was copy my notes directly to paper format and I passed with a B+. Plus, he's representing for all us Okies!!
Graves is amazing. didn't plan on keeping this class after the first lecture but towards the later half of the quarter, it got very interesting & ended up being one of my favorites. Keep up with the readings & take detailed notes in lecture.
Graves keeps this class interesting and entertaining. His lectures contain a lot of info for 50 mins, so you have to take lots of notes. And you have to go to the lectures or you won't know anything. The final is 2/3 of your grade, but it's a paper which is fairly easy.
I found this class to be very challenging but as the quarter progressed the topics became more interesting. You must attend every class-take very detailed notes. The amount of material that needs to be memorized for the exams is unbelievable. The music that he played at the beginning was so loud that it sometimes gave me a headache:( Overall he's good
amazing professor! i recommend typing notes in lecture, it makes studying for the midterm and final much easier. i probably only missed 5 lectures the whole term, but it paid off, just by rereading my notes a lot before the tests i was able to get an A
Great class, provides a unique look at world history and human/environmental relations. Must attend lecture and take good notes, but you can skim the reading and still do well. Tests are essay exams. Graves is a funny and well spoken lecturer.
Professor Graves is a wonderful professor. He always plays music before lecture and tells jokes and seriously takes an interest in his class. The midterm and final were based off of essays that drew heavily from lecture, but so long as the students took notes while he was speaking they did pretty well.
He was great, you must attend lecture though. His TA Jef is super helpfull. Stay away from his reader though
Graves is a boring teacher who's humor needs reshaping. His lectures come from a power point that he tries to go over without skipping around but he always does and it can be hard to follow him. nevertheless, its not hard material or hard yo understand its just plain boring. Take this class if you have to but dont if you cant get around it.
Attendance is definitely mandatory if you want a good grade. There is a lot of information, but most of it is very interesting (especially if you like history and the environment) and he structures it so it's easy to take notes and remember key points. Overall, a great teacher and a great class. Never opened reader and got A
Easy class. straight lecture. ALOT of reading. very interesting class. Midterm and take home final
Such a nice guy. Very enthusiastic about his subject; he really cares about the environment and getting his students to also care. Lectures were usually interesting, as well.
Amazing professor. Entertaining and passionate about his subject. LOVED the class, which was super interesting. Make you sure you ALWAYS go to lecture and take good notes; you'll need them for the midterm and final (lecture terms and essay). Straightforward with his expectations; extremely helpful in office hours. One of the best profs I've had.
I LOVE him. He is interesting and really cares about teaching and his students! I recommend his classes to everyone! I am not a history major but I still love him!!
Bland personality, bland sense of humor, from bland state. nice guy, but shouldn't be teaching. I can play bad music and read word for word off a sheet of notes taken from wikipedia for an hour. He cannot answer any question without referring to his notes. I do recommend es3 but try to take it with someone else
Great teacher, easy class, very helpful and passionate. A lot of reading but it's interesting. I take him whenever I get the chance.
Graves is super interesting and passionate, American Environmental History is just a midterm essay and a take -home final (2 essays for the take home). Both are not too bad, but going to class is a must since you need to use your notes a lot.
The person below is not thinking clearly. Graves is a very interesting lecturer and very easy and clear when it comes to tests. He tells you everything in great detail and tells you exactly what will be on the exam. The more you study, the easier the test will be. Go to his office hours and he will help you.
Took HIST of CA with him also and he is great! Both classes are extremely easy, he is a really nice guy that is interested in what he teaches and all you have to do is show up to class during lecture. He gives you EVERYTHING that will be on the midterm and final during lecture so the people that don't like him probably didn't show up and failed.
This professor is such a great guy! He always rights his notes down on a power-point then explains it, it's SO organized and simple that if you don't get an A in the class, you're an Idiot. He's VERY helpful with emails, and has a sense of humor. Easy grader, and very interesting class. take if required or for fun!
Great Professor, fun lectures and does a pretty good job in his attempt to be funny. Midterm, Final, Book analysis paper. All pretty, gives you study guide and has a full class dedicated to review and questions. Can get by without reading much of the reader so long as you go and take good notes. Really enjoyed this class.
He makes the class interesting. Even the boring parts of Calif. History came alive. He's done his research for sure, and he knows his stuff. His powerpoints are useless, but attending lecture is important for a good grade. Grade is based on a midterm and two papers as a take-home final. He's a really nice guy too!
I've taken Graves's ES 3 and American Enviro History class and I plan to take at least one more class with him next year. His lectures are really interesting and very clear. You know what he expects of you at all times. First prof. I've seen get a standing ovation at the end of the quarter and he deserves it.
I have taken 2 of his classes now and I loved the environmental history class!! it changed my life!! Great professor and good to talk to he loves his work! I'm taking a class with him this summer, history of the west should be great!! Take him!!
A bit drab, but a good professor. Kinda funnny, show lots of videos. Essay tests, LOOOOVES history and that is the main focus of both classes I took.
Great teacher! And a very interesting class! Midterm is in class essay, put tons of details into papers, that's what he is looking for. And then a 10-12 page final paper. The papers are tedious, but what you learn in this class is so worthwhile. Also very helpful at office hours, just ask questions he will give you tips for papers.
Makes the subject really interesting and is clear when he is lecturing. One midterm, one take home final. Quite a lot of reading, but its all interesting so its worth it
Wow! Take this class! ALl you need to do is go to class take crystal clear notes as if you are recording him then when the midterm and final comes all you will have to do is make your notes flow in an essay. The final paper is 10 pages but so easy because you already wrote it during lectures. You just need to include the three booksvery interesting
Really interesting material, the class has lots of reading (~1800 pages) and it's pretty important if you want to do well on the essays.
Professor Graves is amazing. He is very passionate about the subject and I looked forward to going to class. He is very clear but make sure to take really good notes because there is a lot of information to know and the reading takes up a lot of your time. There is an in class midterm and a 10-12 take home paper. Overall a good class.
As an ES major, I was very disappointed. The class was a world history class that mentioned the word "environment" occassionally. Graves is straight forward with what he wants you to know, but this class was a waste of my time. Also, the essay topic was so basic for ES majors that it made it impossible to write. Very underdeveloped thinking for ES.
took his summer class. made it easy for you to keep up, gave out midterm and final prompts. LOTS of notes though during lecture. missed a few and it made it hard. good guy, overall easy class jsut go
Graves was a great lecturer. While he did not know much beyond his powerpoint slides, he was great at tying the concepts together and making the class work. He has an unusually great sense of humor, too. He gave us the midterm/final prompts in class so all you have to do is show up for lecture (make sure), take good notes, and you should get an A.
attend every lecture, and you will pas with a minimum B, read and you will get an A+. he is a great professor, so much so i am taking a class i do not care about, but hist-177 is way more fun and worth taking if you have a chance
Can't say enough kind things about this professor. Definitely cares and goes out of his way to be friendly. Knows his stuff and does a good job of teaching and pacing. Definitely an easy fun class.
best professor ever! very clear in his lectures, knows his stuff very well. you can tell he's one of those guys who would love to talk about anything with you historically, regardless of which subject matter the class is. great professor, extremely helpful
EASIEST CLASS/TEACHER AT UCSB. LITERALLY DIDNT PICK UP THE BOOK, TOOK NOTES IN CLASS(SKIPPED A FEW) AND GOT AN A IN THE CLASS. HE IS SO NICE, EASIEST LECTURES, VERY CLEAR, SO CLEAR/DETAILED THAT YOU DONT NEED TO BUY THE BOOK. THE FINAL IS A PAPER ON A BOOK WHICH HAS ALL THE INFO ONLINE. NEED EASY UNITS? HERES YOUR CLASS!
hands down best professor at ucsb. he is passionate about the subject matter. he is extremely smart and witty. sense of humor, awesome. great lecturer, take good notes and they will help you on midterm/ take home final. high recommend taking any class with greg
I became an E.S. major after taking his class. He is a great lecturer. The tests were short answers/1 essay. If you take great notes in class, you'll be set. Plus, he gives you a list of everything you need to be familiar with for the test.
He's a really good lecturer who is really knowledgable about the subject, although if you miss the lectures, you won't get the notes because they're not posted online or anything. Midterm and final aren't too bad if you have good notes and just study them.
GREAT CLASS! If you're interested Econ/Anth/EnvS, he's the best. His lectures are always interesting and he cracks jokes and shows lots of videos. Midterm is really easy, just focus on the chart in GGS, & the final is harder but still easy. Best TA: Tracey Watts All bluebook, but section really brings up your grade. Everyone should take this class!
Good class but if you get Peggy Beadle as a TA you'll be screwed. All the other TAs graded super easy but she screwed everyone in her sections over, Graves even had to tell her to stop grading so hard. As long as you have a decent TA this class is an easy A and interesting, get notes from someone and then you wont have to worry about going to class
Helpful and Interesting
Best Professor ever! I also took him for California History which is so far my favorite class at UCSB. He is very enthusiastic and I skipped classes and skimmed through the books and still got an A in the class. I learned a lot of very interesting things in his classes! :)
This class is well-organized. His lectures are like one big story and keeps the students entertained. He is a really funny guy too! Especially when he uses his fishing pole as a pointer, The midterm is an in-class essay about the lectures. Final is three take home essays on 3 separate books. Don't miss lectures, nothing is posted online. Fun class
Loved the class, but two things you should know: MT & FIN are essay, and he grades relatively hard on these. Also, the class is taught from the White point of view-best to combine with HIST 168A and/or B (Chicano Hist) to gain perspective. Go see him in his office, he's lots of fun.
I really enjoyed this class. He is funny, shows videos and keeps the class interesting (I do love history tho). Every lecture felt like Prof. Graves was telling a story, and he kept my attention. Take solid notes, & the final is a breeze (3 essays at home). I just turned my notes directly into papers and got an A-. He's great! Take the class.
boring class. talks a lot about history. basically expects you to read a whole book in 1 week because you obviously don't have any other classes to worry about.
Lecture is interesting enough, more of a history class than environmental studies. Tests are easy if you go to class or get the notes from someone, he outlines everything he'd want you to know. The paper is ridiculous, though. Really bad topic, way too confusing and unfocused. Otherwise he's funny, entertaining and has good musical taste.
Professor Graves is fantastic! Though lectures may be a little boring for some people uninterested in the subject, Graves does his best to be clear, concise, and helpful. In his honors section he really opens up and shows his funny side. Great person, great teacher! Take his class.
Never went to a single class and just went to mandatory section (huge portion of the grade). I borrowed someone's notes for tests (all written tests). The paper wasn't too bad and didn't require class attendance. It's basically a lot of memorization of information, he mentions the word environment here and there but its basically a history class.
LOVED this class! Ppl complained a lot about it being a "history" class, well, READ THE CLASS DESCRIPTION! I found it super fascinating, and Graves makes it interesting with film and music. The reading was really easy, no hw. Only complaint was a confusing paper prompt. Exams are IDs & an essay portion, easy if you can do key terms essentially.
i LOVED this class!!! this was my favorite out of the introductory es classes (my major). i AM a history minor so that's probably why i loved it so much but it's easy if you put in time and effort. he's funny, very clear, and i found it easy to get through 1hr15m. Jason Linn is an AMAZING TA (had him twice). Graves is just da best :)
Really good prof. and class even though it was disguised as a history class which was always my worst subject. He was very clear in lecture and prepared us well for tests. Reader not necessary at all, didn't buy it. I found the book GGS for free online. Class is mandatory unless you get the notes from someone. Best ta is Sarah Richman!
great class if you like history, not too much covered. Makes it clear what you need to know, pay attention in class, but if you miss a day you will be fine. Don't buy the reader, but read the other two books. Graves grew on me as the quarter went on, give him a chance and you might really like the class!
TAs sucked at giving presentations. Need 2 bluebooks (1 for midterm, 1 for final). There's easy map quizzes
Graves is an awesome guy! He has a funny, quirky personality. More of a history course with a few environmental aspects thrown in, but still pretty interesting. Enjoyable class. Tests are fair, pretty easy A if you attend class and take good notes.
This was a very interesting class. He discusses the entirety of human history in the context of humans' interactions with the environment. His tests are easy if you go to lecture, but the essay he assigned was a little confusing. He is a nice guy too.
My favorite professor yet. Graves is a very nice man. He cracks jokes and shows videos which is cool. TAKE GOOD NOTES because half of the midterm and final are solely based off of lectures. Material is pretty interesting, Watts is a good TA, she gives easy map quizzes.
He's Awesome Take Him!, now you do have to take notes and although he does not take attendance I do recommend going to all his lectures as you actually learn something in all of them and if you don't then you WILL have to do all the Required reading. Go To Every Lecture and TAKE NOTES and it you will get an A.
Professor Graves was amazing! He was so enthusiastic about the material. Just make sure to take really good notes and go to every lecture, and you will be able to get an A!
You have to attend every class! (unless you have a friend that will lend you notes) Write down everything, and take a computer to organize your notes. Midterm and final are similar format: know everything possible about IDs and mention every term available. This class can be dry sometimes but do not skip out it gets better towards the end. Loved it
Graves never lets me down! wonderful teaching style, funny interesting. uses videos to drive home point. dont buy the reader, i never even opened it. the final was 3 short essays, take home. go to midterm review, bc that WAS the midterm. attending lecture and good notes will get a good grade. i'd love to have graves every quarter!
Professor Graves is seriously the kindest, most amiable teacher I have ever met! ES 173 was very well paced, well-organized, and overall great! His tests were fair. Take a class with Graves!
Professor Graves is a really enthusiastic and sweet teacher. I have to admit that for whatever reason I just had the hardest time staying awake in his lectures. Even if you skip lectures or fall asleep though, it's pretty easy to get good grades in his classes
Graves presents the material an an orderly and engaging way. The first half of the class can be summarized in Ch 18 of Guns Germs & Steel. The second half requires a bit more reading/attendance. Definitely would recommend this class.
Professor Graves is fair and very understanding. I slept through my final and he allowed me to make it up. There is a lot of reading each week that is supplemental to lectures. Attending lectures and paying attention makes the midterm and final easier. A lot of info is covered but as long as you keep up its an easy class.
Professor Graves did a good job considering the big class size. Basically taught like a history course of western society. Mixes in a few jokes and movie clips to keep lecture interesting. Fairly straight forward, did most of the readings and did fine in the class.
midterm and take home final. not a hard class.
midterm, and take home final. Take good notes and you should get an A.
I love Graves! But I loved him more for ES 3. The tests in 188 are a little less straight forward. In-class essay for midterm, and take home final paper. Skim all of the readings, some of them are really good. And I probably could have skipped a class or two, but he will include some of the movies in his tests so you don't want to miss those.
Not the usual ES class but interesting nonetheless. Prepare to take a lot of notes and do reading but Graves's lectures are pretty interesting so paying attention and going to class make studying for the midterm and final a breeze. Interesting topics presented and not too difficult to get a good grade and he's pretty good at relpying to email.
Graves is a cool dude Only one 7-8 page paper (With a creative prompt so it's not solid research). Lectures are super straight-forward and the final and midterm are fairly graded. Subject matter can be a little boring during the first half of the class but the second half is really interesting. Overall, not too hard. TA was great too!
Graves is a great guy, one of the best professors! This class was fairly easy, just pay attention in lecture and write down everything he says. Don't buy the reader or Taking Sides, but do buy Guns Germs and Steel. Good GE class and an easy A, would recommend this class!
Graves is a hoot. Sometimes lecture can be a bit long and boring, but the material is really interesting for the most part. TAs are great and its fairly easy to get an A. Lecture isn't mandatory but he doesn't post lecture slides online. Put in the work, do what the work, you will do just fine. Great GE if you need one!
Greg is so sweet and funny. Don't buy the reader - it's supplemental. Midterm and final are same format - major IDs and essay. Major IDs all come from lecture so take good organized notes on your laptop. He makes the essay topics very broad and it becomes pretty obvious what they will be. Paper isn't bad - I didn't even like mine and I got a 94.
Awesome guy, and an awesome professor. His lectures were very clear, and pertain directly to the midterms. The readings are also not too bad, and if you do both, there is not reason you should get a bad grade in this class. I wish I could take it again.
Being a very emotional person, and one who enjoys and appreciates every aspect of life, this class was very hard to take. This was not hard by tests and homework, but it was hard to watch. Watching all of the chaos that happened in our world and the innocent people dying, make you very sad.
I've had Graves for ES3 and ES188 now. I liked ES188 better because he was more personal with his lectures, but the formats of the two classes were pretty similar. Graves' classes are really concept based rather than memorization based. You have to understand interactions between concepts and form your own opinions or you won't pass.
Funny professor. Posts lectures online but really helpful if you go to class. Requires a lengthy reader and a great long book guns germs and steel. If you understand the major IDs from lecture and section, this is the most important on tests. Highly recommended to read and you will do well.
Great, approachable professor. Had him for ENVS 176A and ENVS 3 and found the classes very easy. ENVS 176A has two midterms and a final while ENVS 3 has only one midterm, a final, and a paper. The books laid out in the syllabus are not mandatory and can be easily found online.
Must go to class since he doesn't post lectures online. 1 book and 1 reader needed. Midterm and final are ID's and an essay based on lecture and readings. Final essay 6-7 pgs. Lectures are clear and easy to understand, just take good notes. Overall decent and passable class, only hard part was getting up early to go.
Lots of reading. Exams are all written.
3 midterms each worth 33%. Same style as ES3. Very good material. Don't buy the reader. Even Cadillac isn't *essential*. Tells you how to prepare for midterms a few days before. Getting an A is very doable if you put in the work (go to lecture, take great notes, and make at least an outline for the exams).
Graves is amazing. Funny, enjoyable, and not too hard. Buy Guns, Germs, and Steel, don't bother with the reader or if you do, split it with a friend. You won't touch it until after the midterm but it's worth having for your paper. 1 MT, 1 final, 1 paper, all essay format
The class was just a midterm and a final. 33% midterm. 66% final. He doesn't post slides and the midterm and final are essays. He is really nice. Definitely the type of teacher you ask questions to in class and not through email. Not hard to pass if you show up.
Kinda dorky but charming. His lecture format involves a powerpoint w keywords that he then talks about, which means you better take notes and listen to what he's saying. Guns Germs and Steel is the book for the class. It has some interesting points, but they're repeated and rephrased over and over. Final paper based on interesting reader articles.
Graves is easily one of my favorite professors at UCSB. He's hilarious, intelligent, and his lectures are like listening to stories. He adds neat pictures and anecdotes to make things interesting. There are 3 midterms, each worth 33%, and (fairly optional) outside reading. That's it! A great, laid-back professor and class. 10/10 would recommend!
Grade consists of one miderm, one paper, one final, and your section grade each being 25%. This class is basically a history class you would take in high school. Really easy material just needa memorize, lecture gets really boring because of Graves voice and lecture style but overall hes a great guy. Pretty much an easy A if you go to section
Graves is an awesome prof. He's really quirky & funny. ES176A with him was really manageable. Grading is 3 midterms, each worth 33%. The book is super useful to contextualize info but the reader isn't worth it. The grading is a little subjective though. Getting a B is easy AF but breaking above a 90% is more based on writing quality than content.
Graves is a funny old guy and really passionate about water policy! His lectures are similar to ENV S 3 with IDs and walk-in music. Take really detailed notes during lecture and you'll do fine on the midterms. Your grade is based on 3 midterms (in class essays) only. Don't buy the reader. Cadillac Desert isn't necessary but it does help.
While this class was very challenging, Graves has been one of my favourite professors on this campus. His lectures are funny and interesting but it is a lot of work having to write down all the information he says. Section is important to depending on TA. 1 debate in section, 1 paper (6-7 pages), 1 midterm, and 1 final.
25% paper, 25% midterm, 25% final, 25% section (debate, map quizzes, participation). Take really detailed notes during lecture and hope you have a good TA! Graves is really passionate about history and is a funny guy. Definitely get Guns, Germs, Steel (really interesting) but you don't need the reader really (it's on course reserves at the library)
Loved Professor Graves. ES3 is such an enlightening class. I don't like history but his lectures are genuinely interesting. Towards the end, there's more material on modern day issues. Your TA grades your midterm/final papers and written exams but the material is easy to understand so as long as you skim the readings and go to lecture you're good!
Graves is my favorite professor at UCSB!
Love his lectures, be ready to take notes. He is very friendly and funny and it's clear he knows his stuff. As long as you're going to class it's an easy pass.
This class turned out to be like another history class and less about actual ES. Choose your TA wisely because some grade papers, exams, and assignments harshly. Not as amazing of a GE as some reviews make it to be. No notes posted online so you must attend lecture, although he often does let the class out early.
Greg Graves is, hands down, the man. Rocking the ultimate sweater vests at every lecture he is a professional in his field through and through. The lectures in all of his classes are well paced, relevant and given at a great pace to be able to absorb and reflect upon the given material. Suggestion: ask him specific questions to get in-depth answers
Dr. Graves was the man! Loved this class (California History); Graves also taught it really well. 3 papers, all worth 1/3 of your grade (1 on the midterm and 2 on the final). Class was really laid-back but so interesting and intriguing. Graves gives you all the tools you need to do well on the papers. Highly recommend!
Unorganized and unprofessional
TA has complete control over your grade considering the paper, midterm, final and participation are graded by them. That being said, some TA's are extremely tough graders while others are very generous, making it wildly unfair and inconsistent. Lectures could be more organized but its Graves last quarter, so it will be different next year
What a guy, sad he's going to be retiring - meaning this is more of a legacy review than anything. The class was structured into two halves, though the first was definitely more interesting to me. More like a history course than ES as well. TA handled all the grading for our course, so maybe that's a shot in the dark. Otherwise, a fun GE class!
seriously go to class! his lectures are super helpful! he's a rly funny dude and he seems passionate abt the environment. sadly he wont be teaching env 3 anymore but it was a good time.
Graves is an awesome professor! Had him for env 3 and env 176a. He is really interesting and funny, laid-back professor. Attendance is mandatory since he doesn't post any of the slides. 3 midterms equally weighted, all blue-book form. His grading his fair if you provide enough details and show you actually know the material!
Class is easy, and Graves keeps lectures interesting. Readings are pretty optional, as Graves will tell you everything you need to know in class. Grade is based off three essays: 1 on midterm, 2 on the final. If you want an A, GO TO CLASS
California History was such an amazing class. It was one of the first upper divs I had taken and it set the bar so high. Graves is very passionate about everything he teaches and is a really kind person. Class was Midterm and Final which were all in-test essays and we were given helpful study guides beforehand. I would 10/10 recommend this class.
This class is graded pretty much entirely on papers. 3 papers, each 1/3 of your grade. I took this during COVID, so we got an extra 4% in the class for doing weekly assignments. He was super understanding and sweet. Truly one of the kindest people. Highly recommend his class.
Greg is passionate about the environment and history, and provides insight and information on important environmental issues and politics over the past 200 years. This class, focused on Water Policy, is incredibly important in our time. I feel so fortunate to have been able to take it, especially after enjoying his environmental history class.
