You can tell he is really knowledgable and interested in biology because is very enthusiastic when he teaches. He gets his students involved in his lectures, instead of just standing in front of the class feeding you information in a monotonous voice. He is extremely helpful and tries to help as much as he can. Altough, he is a bit of a hard marker
Extremely knowledgeable, understands this all too well. Organized, although he often gets repetitive and wordy, extending classes and missing topics. Offers help during his office hours but is condescending during lab evaluations which is a put off. Ridiculously difficult marker who has his own definition for the word "distinguish".
DO NOT TAKE HIM. take the other teachers for bio. this marks too hard. friends of mine who are way dummer than me got a higher mark. he simply marks too hard. ul be sorry if you take him
He's a really hard marker but he does it to make you work harder.
Ugh; Greg Harris is arrogant; and has no knowledge outside his little biology bubble. Doesnt understand that people WORK, and have FAMILIES outside of the biology lab/class. expect to spend 8-10 hours a week in lab, and make sure you spell EVERYTHING correctly, and draw perfect arrows.. Its ridiculous. Take bio in richmond=lesswork/high mark.
One of the worst teachers in the world, i mean don't get me wrong.. He's a nice guy, VERY nice guy; but lets face it.. teaching isn't his thing. "AH KRIKEY"
oh gosh. NOOO WAYY. Dont take him.. Unless you can READ HIS MIND on what he wants..He expects you to know exactly what he wants, is not very clear, a VERY VERY VERY hard marker. HES A NICE GUY THOUGH! if that helps..even tho he once told me that i was wasting his time during an evalutation..which i found quite arrogant!..dont waste ure money
He is a really nice guy, and very willing to help, however he is the hardest marker I have ever had, it was almost ridiculous, even if you know your stuff you cannot be sure you will do well. He is a good guy, but settles only for perfection.
Harris is a very hard marker, and isn't always clear on what he wants to see on tests. However, if you ask him for help he'll be happy to give it to you.
a very hard marker!
HE SUCKSSSS DONT TAKE HIM, TRUST ME DONT TAKE HIM, HE EXPECT PPL TO READ HIS MIND@@
Greg is very helpful in class time. He's willing to ask the class how they want to be taught and what is helpful in his teaching. Yes, he asks for specifics but he does go through what he wants prior to quizzes.
Good guy, good teacher, but, to quote another rater... he expects students to READ HIS MIND. From a one sentence question, he expects EXACTLY a certain answer... very precise. That being said, his brutal marking has forced me to improve. At least I like to think it has.
Really nice guy, really hard marker. Pay attention to his handouts and to how he wants the questions answered, and you will do well. His answer formats seem to have a formula so get a hang of it and things will be ok. If you need help/clarification; ASK, and he's more than willing to sit down with you.
Greg is SUCH A HARD MARKER!! I enjoyed the material, but he was so specific and never gave any breaks on his marking. Do not take him.
Very hard marker -- often it's impossible to guess what answer he wants. Spent more time on this course than on all my other four courses together and by midterm it seemed I'd be lucky to finish with a C+. If you are taking a full load avoid taking BIO 1100 w Greg at all costs. If you want a high grade avoid Greg. In one word -- Unfair.
Definitely would avoid taking a class with him. Hard marker! The material is interesting, but a bit intense. Lab hours take over your life(7ish hrs/wk)+ studying. Don't take it if you're going F/T.
Absolutely do not take him. He's a nice guy, but an awful instructor. His marking is ridiculous and completely unfair - good luck trying to figure out what he wants on tests! He expects this course to be your life - definitely don't take him if you're taking 2 or more other courses. Our whole class did poorly and I had to withdraw.
Don't take this teacher. Save yourself the fustrations and headaches. I have taken over 50 classes and this teacher is the hardest marker by far. His teaching is overly critical, antiquated and redundant. To give you an idea. 35 started the class and one month later there are 18 left.
I don't recommend Prof. Harris. He is a terrible teacher. His main problem is he doesn't help students understand the key points. I don't think he understands that students learn differently. Some learn by doing things and some are the opposite they need the whole problem outline up front.
He is a fair marker, biology is a hard marking course, but personally I found his teaching to be quite lacking, in several ways. He claims to have the students best interests in mind, yet at times he conveys misleading info, and doesn't cover nearly a fraction of the most key components of the weeks lectures.. in my view.
He is a good teacher actaully. If you pay attention in class and study for tests you will be fine. The comments before are wrong to me. I found him to be very helpful, yeah he does have a way he likes to mark, but you 'll get it. =)
This teacher is pretentious to say the least! I think he needs to understand the real meaning of the word "distinguish." DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. He will pick apart your work at every turn. He tries to trick you, and is extremely critical of your work, this guys handouts are full of spelling errors!
it was impossible to get anythingg in full marks in his class, if your looking for a bio course that will get you easy marks, then dont take him!!!!!! hee willl torture you when it comes to define/describe questions, and you havee no idea what he wants for answers! do yerself a favour and dont botherr takingg bio1110 if your not goin to work at itt
Mr Gregg Harris is a nice man, but his marking scheme is extremely difficult. Unless you've memorized the textbook, you're not going to get full marks. Slight spelling errors could give you an entire question wrong. I would be his friend as he is not a mean person, but I would not like to be a student.
Excellent always willing to help. Is a strict marker but tells you what he is looking for. Classes all have a quizz.
BEST INSTRUCTOR IN KWANTLEN!!! Extremely nice and helpful. If you're looking for easy marks then he is probably not the instructor for you, but if you like interactive interesting lectures then his are the best! He is a hard marker but if you are there to do the work and attend the lectures he tells you exactly what he is looking for.
IS A VERY HARD MARKER AND DEFINETLY NOT A TEACHER WHO YOU WOULD LIKE TO START YOUR BIOLOGY AT UNIVERSITY WITH SIMPLY BECAUSE DOES NOT SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH STUDENTS OR MARKING!
Bio with any teacher is a challenge. Greg is an exceptional teacher, makes his lectures interesting but he marks quizzes and midterms very very hard. Even you are well prepared for these, its not good enogh, he should actually be teaching English...because grammar and being articulate in your anwsers is what he wants! I got a B-
Greg is a ridiculously hard marker. The only way to recieve full marks for a question in his class is to answer in the EXACT words he uses when teaching. The extra lab work for this course is brutal, so if you have to take bio make life a little easier on yourself and make sure it isn't with greg.
Greg is an awesome teacher, he marks really hard but as long as you study and do your lab work you will do fine. He really helps if you see him in office hours he will take the time to explain anything to you. Overall an amazing teacher that i will definately take again in the future.
Very tough marker, a C in his class would probably be a B or higher in any other biology class.
Excellent Prof. ONLY for serious Biology students. If you really want to know about Biology, take his class. If you are just taking this course as an elective, DO NOT take this course because he is extremely HARD MARKER. NOTE, this course will bring your GPA down. got A+ on most of other science courses but got B- on this course. Hardest prof ever.
Excellent teacher, just need to ease up on how he words his questions. Very picky.
He is a nice enough man, but I would call myself a "mature student" and he made me cry like one of my kids. Hardest marker ever... I use to love biology and now I hate it... Considering changing my degree because of this teacher. Very discouraging. Hinted to me 3 times, to withdrawl from the course and normally I do well on average in everything.
Decent teacher, he'll help you learn the course material but his quiz and test expectations are ridiculous! should have taken in Richmond. Avoid this teacher at all costs!!!!
Course covers extremely time consuming labs, more material than time we have. Answers in tests have extremely high expectations of the quality of answers to get decent marks. Very different style required to answer a question. Should definitely practice answering questions before any quiz.
Extremely hard marker with unrealistic expectations when it comes to answers on tests and midterms. Was a no show on during some office hours. Gets angry if you don't know the angry (not in a caring way). Avoid if possible.
Very tough test marker, very hard to get an A. He's a bit too reluctant to give full marks on test questions, therefore: Get him to explain how he wants certain questions answered; Make sure you look over your answers thoroughly to be sure he didn't miss anything; Go in after tests and make your case for marks and you will likely get a couple.
Extremely difficult marker, he is unclear.. Went from high school bio with an A too needing to drop the course. He seems to find humour by embarrassing students when they don't know the answer.
It's funny to see all the comments whining about how hard his classes are.Welcome to the real world kiddies. You have to earn it. If you actually care about learning properly take Greg's class. He's passionate about the subject and very clear about how he wants specific questions answered and if you can do that and put in the effort you'll do fine.
professor harris is one of the best He was a very tough marker and he was tough in the labs. I did what he wanted and learned a lot of valuable lessons that are needed in the healthcare field such as how to deal with tough boss, detail oriented, following instructions. I just kept a positive outlook and realized early that he was helping me alot
Greg is an amazing teacher. He is very passionate about the subject and it's contagious. If you follow his formula for answering questions it's easy to get a good mark. You have to try hard in this class but this is University after all. You should be trying hard anyways. I am already planning to have him for Biol 1210!
Classes don't always finish on time ! Talks a lot ! Willing to help always
Cares about teaching and finding new ways to get ppl interestedlearning. Hard marker but if you follow his question-answering format, you'll survive his course. He picks on everyone to answer but it's okay to say you don't know the answer. Clear, straight forward, long lectures. If you want a strong base in bio, take him.. not for elective!
greg's a nice guy but is very tough in his marking. lectures always feel rushed. he takes his time through the beginning then rushes through the last 15 slides in 20 minutes explaining things in minimal detail. and leaving no time for notes. USe the textbook though along with you notes and you should pass the class. available during office hours
Hard marker, especially at the 1000 Level. Once you get past that it gets way easier, and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches (Ecology, Conservation)
Greg is a funny and nice guy but he is the hardest marker I've had. He has weekly quizzes that are pretty hard. He only gives 2 exams/tests but they are quite difficult. He is EXTREMELY specific on what he wants in an answer to a written question (if you use the wrong SYNONYM to a word, marks are taken off.) so you really need to listen in class.
He will attempt to help when requested, but be prepared for some interpretation. The class time is too short for the material involved to be fully covered for the tests, so seriously read your textbook. Do your readings and chapter questions. Above all else, dude has sharply defined criteria for what counts as proper terminology and phrasing.
You have no idea what he expects. Even he doesn't know what he expects
For biol 2322 and Biol3XXX, Greg is a really nice teacher who teaches at a good pace, he uses lots of examples so you understand the concept. He is very particular on tests, which in itself aren't too hard, but he marks quite strictly.
While Greg is a tough marker, he makes it very clear as to what he expects from you. Biology is a difficult course but he makes it enjoyable with the passion he shows for the subject matter. He's always happy to help and clarify concepts. As someone who loves Biology, i highly recommend him! He knows what he teaches!!
Greg is a super sweet guy and genuinely cares about his students, both their learning and well-being. His tests aren't as sweet as he is unfortunately. The quizzes are not bad if you study the weekly material but the tests are doom for your mark. There is not enough time to write excellent answers to the copious amount of material on the tests.
He does expect a lot from you but he's willing to help you in any way that he can. He spends his office hours in the library and will go over any tests or concepts that aren't fully understood. If you put in the work, the results will show. Would highly recommend !
Greg is a nice guy and he is great at teaching. However, he will probably be one of the hardest markers you will have. Also, his lectures go late almost every time. Don't schedule anything right after his class or you will be late for it.
Very good professor but is a tough marker
Greg's passion for biology & his enthusiasm enhance the course content. To those pursuing medicine/biology/environment: this class will shape you into an excellent student, but be prepared. He's a difficult marker for those who do not follow his strict answer requirements, but he continuously reminds students of his expectations; pay attention!
Greg is an extremely difficult marker for an introductory course . I feel he should be a bit more lenient as there is lots of content in this course. Majority of our class failed the midterm. He's a good professor but has extremely difficult tests and quizzes. I went from an high B in Biology 12 to not passing this course.
Agreed with the last review below. Greg comes off as a nice guy but he becomes totally different when it comes to teaching the lesson and grading his test. He uses complex jargon and make you feel like you haven't learned anything. Had to take a 'W' instead of dropping my GPA. Avoid at all cost.
Great Professor, teaches well, tough marker though.
Greg is very personable and is always smiling through his lectures. If you need extra help he is usually available in the library during his office hours but I found there was always multiple people waiting to see him. He is a very tough marker and doesn't spend much time going over how to answer questions scientifically. I unfortunately took a W.
Greg is one of the best Biology professors at Kwantlen. Hes a tough grader, but youd thank him for being hard on you. Fun lectures, knows what hes doing. Enjoyed the class
He is a tough grader, but he has good reason for it and he makes sure the class knows EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS. So really, there isn't really an excuse to call him a bad prof for his tough grading. He is extremely passionate about biology, he's a charming Aussie, and he offers tons of office hours to come see him and talk about any of the tests done.
Greg is a tough marker. Textbook for this course was unnecessary to purchase everything tested except 2 questions out of all quizzes were reading objectives. Pretty much only need lecture notes. He does NOT post lectures online so you will need to schedule a time to pick up what was handed out in class. Barely any chance to boost your grade.
Greg is very specific about how you answer question. If you have one word that varies from your answer if will be wrong. You need to answer specifically to his requirements or it's wrong. Don't expect to have a general idea because again it will be wrong. Everything you write basically needs to be word for word on how he would answer the question.
I wouldn't take his class if you're a full time student and/or working. Every week of class is filled with new content that ranges from 10+ new terms, processes and everything else in between. He's a nice guys but this course covers way too much on a weekly basis to gain understanding and knowledge to be expected to learn in a week to write a quiz.
i will never take greg again he is the hardest marker i met in my entire uni life. He does weekly quizs, there are one midterm and one final. If ur answers are not worded EXACTLY how he wants then its wrong. even if u have something very similar or if u have the general knowledge he will mark it wrong if its not exactly how he wants it. DO NOT TAKE
I took him despite of the bad review. his quizzes are not that bad as long as you review the course content for each week and do your reading objectives. his midterm is really hard. He does not just read the slides, he explains it thoroughly and knows what he is doing.
Greg is very good lecturing, he is very engaging and is enjoyable to listen to. His marking is VERY strict. Your written answers have to be written very specifically or else they will be marked as wrong. His lectures always run a little behind which didn't bother me. He is very helpful and great at explaining when you ask for clarification.
At first the classes were fine and whatever was on reading objectives was on the quiz. Midterm was difficult. Later on in the semester, quizzes weren't on the reading objectives, and lecture was heavy, quizzes were heavy, final was very heavy with two essays on it. There were quizzes every week. Would not recommend at all.
Avoid him thats all i can say . Getting A and B in biol courses never expected F in this class. This is because use he never teach the way he want the final exam to be answered. He failed half of the class.
I'm confident to say that the way to manage his class is likely to make his students be frustrated more than encourage to study harder with good motivation. I'm a really hard worker and I've got only over A grades before his course. Every test that accounts for 75% out of 100% is rather for English course, with a piece of biological knowledge.
Greg's a tough marker, but he's got a solid pattern that he expects followed for the questions. If you stick to it, there's really no going wrong. He does expect a scientific writing style, and tends to mark more harshly if you stray towards more of an English essay feel. Excellent prof that definitely prepared me for later bio classes!
Well, let's be honest - you've come to this page because you chose his class w/o viewing his rating. He is very nice though his marking is very tough for a first year course. Don't stress, this class just needs more effort than ususal, so be ready to study. Quizes weekly so at least 1 day of 2 is mandatory. LEARN HOW HE WANTS U TO ANSWER OR RIP
He is not normal! Stay away from him! Even if you study hard and know everything, he uses words like " surviving from my course" himself! He shows very kind and polite, but, he like to give you a F or lower mark to destroy your plans!
This course has a lot of quiz's and the midterm was very long. Studying does help but he will often include questions that were not covered in class or by the assigned reading. He states on the first day of class that those with no previous bio class will likely fail his course, even though it's meant to be a beginner's course.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Greg is by far the hardest marker Ive had. He wants all his questions answered exactly how he would answer them or he marks it wrong (even if the content is write/you have the right idea). All grading is pretty much done by quizzes and tests so theres no room to boost your grade. Nice guy otherwise but dont waste your time
This class was one of my worst experiences ever. I would study 8-9 hours for a quiz, and then because I couldn't wrap my mind around the EXACT wording he demanded I would fail, even if I knew the right answer. A very rigid marking system. 20+ hours a week studying bio with barely anytime for other classes. This class was a complete Horror Show.
Gregory Harris definitely destroy your transcript and plans! Never take his classes! He is not normal!
Worst professor ever! He gives the worst tests and quizzes. He is a horrible person in general!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. i went from getting 90+ percent from previous bio's to a barely 65% in his class. He marks extremely difficult (like med school difficult) and expects you to gather all test/quiz knowledge from the textbook/additional sources rather than teaching you it, quiz every week which is fine except the questions are harder than they should
One of the worst professor's ever. Please beware of Greg. DO NOT take the course with Greggory Harris even if you have no other class left to be registered in. Take the course in next semester but DO NOT take the class with Greg. Tough grader, worst quizzes and mid term. Worst final examination. PLEASE AVOID HIM.
Through the first month you may perceive Professor Harris as a bad professor, however as you progress through his class, he turns out to be quite the opposite. Prof Harris always responds to emails, he does his absolute best to help you understand material, and he wants you to succeed. He is a fantastic Biology prof if you are willing to work hard.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. It was so difficult I had to drop because I was going to fail. He was very supportive as I dealt with some personal issues but overall he won't bend his dates, tough grading or anything. If your answer is not in his words its wrong. Nice guy but IMPOSSIBLE to pass, wouldn't recommend.
Literally the worst prof ever. If you dont write the tests word for word how he wants its wrong . Even tho THE CONCEPT AND IDEA IS THE SAME, spent hours studying to barely pass he expects you to spend 12-14 hours a week just for his class??? He made me hate biology and this is was an introductory class. AVOID. For the sake of ur mental health
Do not take this prof!. Greg is nice but he is such a tough grader and wants his tests to be exactly in his words. Would study for hours only to withdraw from the class.
HE IS ATOUGH GRADER BUT A VERY GOOD PROFESSOR
Greg is not suitable for teaching an INTRO bio course. Toughest grader ever. He marks on the med school level and could take a mark off if he misreads your answer. Will proceed to try and prove that he is in the right and you're in the wrong. Marks the grammar not the knowledge. Constantly interrupts the lab instructor too. Dropped. AVOID!
He is a good prof. But focuses more on your English rather than your knowledge. He grades super tough
DO NOT take this class. The HARDEST marker ever. Will mark your answer wrong, even for things he did not ask you to do. Will get mad if you don't explain more than you are asked too. Will make you hate bio. Just wait for next semester instead of settling for him.
Never take his course unless you are a native speaker with good memory. He grades every spelling mistake and gramma mistakes even though your meaning is correct! I spend the most of time on this course but I got an D, I got A for all of my other courses with much less time spending! I didn't get what I deserved.
He is a tough grader just focus on your english rather than knowledge.
He is a very nice professor and is always available to help but he is very unreasonable in the way you write your answer VERY TOUGH GRADER!!! you're always either missing something or writing too much.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!!!!! He is very picky and wants you to answer questions how HE would answer them. marks on spelling and is very unreasonable when it comes to grades. He does not see a problem in his teaching technique even though most our the class failed!!!!! the class average for the midterm was 50% with about 10/15 people failing.
don't take his class! he's a great person but he's a horrible professor. he grades you based on your grammar instead of actual biology content. tells your doing great and pulls up your "C" quiz. 20+ students in the beginning and now there's 10 of us attending. i always loved bio but he ruined my passion and drive. NEVER TAKE HIM.
Good person, bad teacher. I'm currently taking 3 other bio/chem classes, and I'm doing great! But, in BIO1110 (a literal foundation course), I'm almost failing? I get the content, and I talk to him during office hours. But he continues to grade my tests based on how good my english is, which is unfair, especially for a biology class
He is a good person BUT NOT A GOOD PROF. HE HAS FAVOURITES AND IS BIAS. YOU NEED TO SUCK UP TO HIM. HE LOWKEY TARGETS YOU IF YOU ARE EITHER LATE OR MISSED A CLASS. VERYYY TOUGH GRADER. HIS POWERPOINTS ARE NOT VERY INFORMATIVE EITHER. QUIZ EVERY OTHER WEEK.
Greg is a kind and caring instructor, but his exams are extremely strict. Full terminology, exact wording and detailed mechanisms are required. Even if you understand the concepts, it's easy to lose marks. Great person, very tough grader — not ideal for ESL students.
Please do not take him unless you have nothing else to do with your life. He just reads off slides and expects you to add onto certain definitions and processes but doesn't specify what you need to know. What is the point of an instructor if you're gonna end up teaching yourself? Again, please do not take him.
