Disagree highly with previous poster. Holditch is an amazing teacher!
Awesome teacher, hands down.
great teacher, amazing guy, but a super tough marker. English is not my strongest class, so i wasnt expecting to do well, but he still expects a lot on the essays.
Great Teacher, Inspiring, puts a lot into classes...friendly, neat guy. likes video games...keeps the classes engaging and even fun. before greg I would never take another english class, now though, I definitely am going to take more.
Best teacher I've ever had. Super helpful, kind, and makes his expectations very clear. He's also really hilarious and makes classes fun/worth going to. Highly recommended!
if you hate english now, take him and you'll love it. he's an easy marker (got A in the course) and an overall good prof
Amazing teacher!! --and not too bad on the the ol' eyes either. He really makes what could be a brutal class fun, engaging, funny-- the guy is amazing and the class has a really relaxed atmosphere. Be aware, he doesn't give away marks and he expects a lot on the essays. If English isn't your first language you may encounter difficulty.
his classes are fun and he's engaging in a very nerdy sort of way. attendance is mandatory or else he docks you 2% a day - which is pretty annoying. he's a really tough marker, so if you slack off you will receive a mark representative of that.
super cute..n makes english fun...a lot of discussion.
As a non-native English speaker (although I'm quite proficient), I felt intimidated taking English in Canada for the first time, but Greg made the process comfortable. He's so nice that you'd want to do well. Not to mention, he's cute too! ;) Oh, and he looooves video games. Sometimes I wish I do too! (Dang, I should have taken 1127 with him!)
Class is just an educational comedy act. Totally worth my time and money.
Greg is a really fun instructor. His class is engaging, well thought out and he's really good looking too! He marks essays really hard though, so follow his method precisely. Otherwise your mark will suffer. Overall, it was a really great class and his nerdiness makes him fun.
Greg's a really cool guy! Very motivating teacher, and always willing to help students. Although he's a hard marker, he's a really good teacher so pay attention.
Overall great teacher and I highly recommend him.
He is a really hard marker, but if you can learn from your first few assignments you can still do great. Sometimes there are classes that end up feeling like little families and I think Greg helped that happen. I didn't like English before his class but I learnt a lot about my writing style and had a lot of fun. Take his class, it was great!
He's almost TOO good. Every teacher I've had since Greg seems like such a disappointment. I think he's ruined me. But seriously, it just speaks to how amazing he is. Sometimes you can tell that someone is meant to be a teacher and that is definitely the case with Greg. He's a very inspiring human being. (And he's sort of adorable.)
While he is a nice teacher, the work we required to do is not relevant and useless in life.
Greg is an amazing teacher. He makes class lots of fun and this is coming from someone who needs to be engaged and interested to be in class. He creates a fun learning environment. He is a bit of a tough marker, but you gotta do the work....DUHHH! He makes learning fun. Definitely looking forward to taking another class with him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
dont take him!!!!
I highly do not recommend him. At the end of the class, you find that half of his students dropped out. Makes you read a book that's written by one of the Langara instructors and makes you read it, the book obviously does not help. Marks extremely hard, I spent more time preparing for his class than studying for physics!
Wow. It's unbelievable that Prof. Holditch would make his English class "read a book"... Excellent criticism buddy. Greg Holditch is an amazing and inspiring English teacher!!
Dorkiest Teacher ever. Marks pretty hard but all his marks are BY THE BOOK. and he provides an outline before hand to follow when writing an essay. Loved all the plays/poems etc. that he chose and I was ALWAYS excited to come to class. Extremely nice teacher & super funny and easy to talk to.
He nurtures his students. Extremely helpful. He makes an effort to make learning fun and exciting.
Teacher is a nice guy very helpful, but homework load is overbearing
Class is fun and easy. Greg is full of energy and makes the class interesting and gets the class involved with discussions/activities. Assignments/midterm are harder than expected though once compared to classroom vibe. Very hard marker. Unclear of what he expects.
Geeky teacher. But a funny geek. Hard. I highly recommend people to take 1121 with him. During the semester, I hated him because he was such a hard marker and I am always wordy. Left me depressing. But near the end of the semester, I finally understood. Took 1127 & 1129.. no problems with being wordy and now can't think Holditch enough.
he marks really really hard!! its really discouraging and i don't understand what he hell he wants anymore. i just dont get it. On the other hand he's a really cool teacher!
Greg is an amazing teacher full of life and energy. His teaching methods helps you learn while having fun. Very inspiring teacher. His marking may be hard but it reflects our true ability and motivates to lean more. I never found him discouraging. Highly recommended teacher.
Greg is a great guy, he made the class interesting and I enjoyed being there. That being said, his marking is extremely hard and his standards are far too high for a first year english course. His class severely dropped my gpa but i did enjoy it
If you wanna fail your course, take his class
Very good teacher!! extreamly helpful. also somewhat funny.. enjoyed the class...however he is a very...VERY.. hard marker. u have to write the essays exactly how he wants it... other than that he is awesome..
He's a great teacher but his marking is extremely harsh for first year English. Pulled my GPA straight down.
Easiness: (1)Marks hard,(2) unclear expectations, and (3)vague directions. I don't mind hard marker, if he is superior in the two last points. Helpfulness: Limited and inconvenient office hours. Only gives partial help. Clarity: See pts 1&2. Interest: Good speaker and easy-going (on appearance) Textbook: Teaches us to teach ourselves. Heavy-use.
Super helpful, but he assigns a lot of questions and worksheets to take home. He definitely has the young hot nerd teacher thing going on.
do not take his class
Very nice, fun teacher. Classes are entertaining but his marking is simply unreasonable. Class average was 50%. From what I have heard, all English instructors seem tomark extremely hard on first year students. The problem is when you go to him for help, he is really encouraging and makes you think you are writing correctly and then marks you poorly
Greg is fun, engaging and easygoing. Participation is a must. Take notes! this will help generate theses, claims and helpful quotes for essays. Follow the *Methods txt precisely or else your mark will be severely compromised. Slacking off warrants failure. But most importantly have fun, the in depth discussions in class are refreshingly relatable
He makes you believe you are doing very well in class but marks very hard and harshly. Follow textbook exactly to do well.
Really awesome guy but a terribly hard marker. I had a great time in his class and it was a lot of fun but couldnt get over a 56% on any of the essays. Even when I tried to do what he told me, it still wasnt good enough.
Greg is a funny and easygoing guy but he's also a terribly hard marker.(The average of the first take home essay was 55%)His marking strategy is like a photocopier from the textbook, follows strictly whatever it says. I tried to follow, didn't work. Not recommended.
Greg is a really great teacher.I'm surprised that some people here said he was unclear because he is extremely clear about what makes a good analysis essay. The Method's book is also very clear and helpful. He is a tough marker but not unfair-he is helping us learn for our future essays rather than babying us like a doting parent.Makes class fun!
Greg is a nice guy, funny, energetic but he is such a damn hard marker. I followed the book, proofread and spent hours on my work but couldn't get over 55%. His expectations are unclear. He gives a 20% project on the last day of class and gives you two weeks to do it while you have your other exams. I am B/B+ student and I failed. Do not recommend
Greg is an awesome teacher! he is super funny, nice, approachable, and always welcomes people to come to his office hour for help! Yes, he may be a hard marker but he only wants to make your writing better. He is very clear on what he expects from you and essay structure is directly out of the methods text which is extremely helpful!
He's entertaining but for someone who isn't into pop culture, his examples for explaining things are not ideal. I felt that he was contradictory in his expectations... said one thing, if you do it, still marked it wrong. Too much reference to textbook with little explanation. He is not very professional. Would not recommend.
Nice, funny, appoachable, hardest marker in the world!! He lives and breathes by the Methods book. He measures margins lines! 100% a GPA Dropper. Hardly teaches you how to write an essay, the only example on how to write are the sample essays which hardly tells you how to write a good one.
Terrible teacher. Now that I have a new instructor, I realize how terrible this guy is at explaining things. Sticks to the obnoxious book too much. Never had I received such an awful mark in English. He has awful "explanations". The only good thing about him is he, is he's entertaining. Take someone else if you need first year English.
I love this man. He's a hard ass marker, but I appreciated that. His high expectations kicked myself into high gear. Had to follow his guidelines and the textbook very strictly. Created an environment ideal for discussion; content and interpretation was made very interesting. I fell in love with English again because of his class.
Greg marks pretty hard, he doesn't surprise you with random expectations. He's marking by the book, if you review methods the guidelines are quite clear. the class is comfortable and his jokes make the class fun. Workload is manageable and your writing skills and approachability towards essays will improve dramatically. thumbs up!
Greg is a really nice guy he's always willing to help after class or in office hours. He's entertaining in class. However, he is a REALLY harsh marker! Take someone else if you really have to! I mean this is first year English, I'm not even trying to get get a English major geez.
Great Professor, he is very helpful when it comes to answering your questions. Greg is also pretty chill, he is like a cross between a student/teacher and never gets angry or frustrated. Very hard marker though, always make sure you follow the book...FOLLOW THE BOOK. You will not fail if you...FOLLOW THE BOOK! Easily the best professor I ever had.
Great prof! He makes the whole class engaged in interesting discussion. He teaches you how to write essays based on the format. But if you can't think of great stuff to write, you will still get low marks. This course is hard for me. Work hard!
1) Harsh marker 2) Vague explanation 3) False encouragement 4) Unrealistic expectation. 5) Unprofessional. IF YOU WANT TO PASS HIS CLASS YOU MUST 1) Be extremely literate 2) Extremely skilled at essay formatting and writing 3) Can self teach. If you can not do the following YOUR RESULT WILL BE POOR GRADE OR AN F.
Really nice guy and wants to see his students succeed. If you attend every class and put hard work in it is possible to do well. The first essay he always fails most of the class but he is there to help during office hours. He is a very hard marker which you can either get discouraged by or motivated to do better. I enjoyed his class.
Very possibly one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Class discussions focus entirely on thematic content of readings but assignments are graded on structure. It's impossible to do well in this class unless you teach yourself. Follow the textbook EXACTLY or fail. Extremely unprofessional, homework is often not graded.
horrible teacher. the due date of assignments/quiz are confused. hard marker
In-class discussions were fun and went into great analytical detail but it does not help at all for writing papers. Sticks to the Methods book but does not teach the format in -depth in class. If you do not follow the books' formatting exactly you will get a poor mark. seeing him outside of class doesn't help either
Greg is friendly and approachable and he really does make the class engaging and interesting. On the other hand he frequently doesn't show up for office hours, changes due dates and marks extremely hard. He is flexible when it comes to late assignments and personal issues. Attendance in included in your overall mark.
My second language. Follow textbooks' guidelines! Even though I did that, I still struggled to get above 70 prior to revision.(Interesting teacher and discussions)I didn't learn a lot about writing essays. Doing well in this course depends on your level of English(writing). One thing I appreciated(list?logical sequence)Improving English takes time~
Greg is a great teacher and he involves his students in all his discussion. His class assignments are very helpful. I really enjoy being in his class.
Great prof hard marker
Super nerdy prof - loves video games. Lots of group work in class. Writing assignments are super sturctured.
Makes u work for it but super fun make sure to read text for reading quizzes
Had trouble at frist but visiting office hours really helped. Class was fun and engaging. Do all reading cause of quiz.
He makes classes engaging through discussions and his eccentric sense of humor and he's an all around nice guy. That being said, unless you're Paul Headrick's himself, chances are you won't get a great mark in his class. Follow methods and you might stand a chance. Take advantage of office hours and make sure to read before quizzes. Good Luck!
Make sure to attend every class cause he takes attendance marks. Also read assignments super close. Good semester All in all.
Enjoyed the class
Great!
I took this as an online course so I don't know what he is like in class. As far as my experience goes though I would not recommend this prof. He assigns weekly discussions then rarely contributes, expecting other students to give feedback, whether they know what they are doing or not. Extremely hard marker and only learned from the textbook.
Tough grader, drags my GPA. Requires you to attend every class otherwise there will be a 2% drop in your total (final) grade for each time that you don't come. Think about it before you register for his class.
Tough marker, makes you work harder (he gives you feedback), if you want to excel you can, just work -- welcome to College! Methods textbook sucks. and his attend every class rule for mark blows -- don't skip it will bite you in the ass (final mark wise) otherwise he's nice to look at and funny!
I usually got above 80% on all my essay however in this course, getting about 60% is extremely diffcult. He's a great proffessor and class goes by QUICK with his in class discussions. Make sure you read the short stories! METHODS BOOK IS VITAL and once again ... he marks incrediably tough and often contradicts himself.
He is THE hardest marker I have ever experienced. He gives contradicting information and does not help whatsoever. His lectures are engaging which is deceiving. If you're looking to boost your gpa do not take this class.
I was really surprised by how well I ended up doing, considering I started off the semester with incredibly low grades for what I normally get in English. He's a wonderful person, but definitely one of the hardest markers I have ever had. If you plan to take him, focus, ask for feedback and follow the text thoroughly.
He is a nice guy, well dressed, and his classes can be really engaging. But he is so disorganized! I cannot stress that enough. If you are the type of person that likes structure, I wouldn't recommend taking him. But otherwise, pretty great teacher. Oh, and always do the readings as I can guarantee you there will be a quiz!
Greg is funny and his classes are engaging but he is pretty disorganized. That is my only complaint with him. I still would recommend him though as I enjoyed going to his classes and he is (for the most part) very helpful outside of class time.
Probably the worst prof I have ever had, extremely hard marker and very confusing outlines on what's to be expected. When asked for further feedback, he is very limited and asks you to "refer to the textbook". Went from a F in his class, to receiving a B the following term with a different prof.
Go to his office hours persistently and his advice will help your essay achieve a much higher grade. Follow the Methods textbook religiously, and he emphasizes on structure (ex. logical structure). 1 in class essay about poem, 2 take home essays about fiction and film. Final was tough cause we barely had time to read/analyze slaughterhouse five
Greg was very unorganized throughout the semester. He cited the textbook for feedback, which was very confusing and hard to understand if you don't understand the textbook. He seemed to struggle with properly communicating what he was teaching and why he was teaching it. He didn't seem to apologize for his mistakes. I wouldn't recommend him.
In my experience with Greg, he didn't follow through with the course outline. We were given a list of video games to work off of and then he dropped the ideas quickly. Seemed odd. I found his pop quizzes to have little structure and had to go to his office to see the marks. Also odd, he gave out bonus marks if we got tutored for our work...
A really funny guy that can at times be a hard marker. If you put the effort in and go see him he really helps you and will definitely help in getting the mark that you want out of the course. He tries to make the class as engaging as possible which is a plus!
Greg is an engaging lecturer for those who enjoy video games, comics and anime. Within marking he can be quite unfair, especially according to his outline. Even if you follow perfect literary analysis he will still mark you poorly. It's hard to know his expectation without seeing him in office hours. If you're not a keener, do not take his class.
Took him last year. Struggled immensely. Constantly went saw him in his office. Barely passed with a C-. Took it again next semester with a different prof, got an A-. Greg didn't follow his outline, he didn't seem to understand how to teach literary analysis.. I know it's really harsh, but he's an awful teacher. Very nice, just not a good prof...
BEST ENGLISH PROF EVER! Reading quizzes are easy. (really easy). very accessible cause his office hours and writing centre times are flexible. he will really help you and guide you when youre writing your paper! HE IS REALLY NICE AND FUN!
Greg is very funny and helpful during office hours. Greg is down to earth when it comes to teaching his class.
Greg's pretty unorganized but he still manages to make the lecture interesting in class discussions. One tip: he gives LOTS of reading quizzes at the beginning of class on prior lectures, so make sure you do the homework! There's just too many papers in general to write, but if you love poetry, novels, and film analysis. This is a great GPA booster
He's willing to help you when you need one. He makes the class more interesting. He's funny and not really a tough marker. Just put an effort on everything you do in his class.
Greg is a very fun and interesting prof. If you like video games and movies then this prof is for you. He is very down to earth and tries to make his lectures both educational and interesting. He teaches very well and works hard for his students.
For some reason Greg makes this class harder than it should be. Weekly quizzes try to trick the student on purpose. Discussion board participation is obligatory, but Greg only provides feedback to a few, relying on students to critique each other instead. Avoid, especially if ESL.
I loved the in-class discussions, but no matter how much I've tried to improve any of the essays, the efforts were not taken into consideration. At one point, after rewriting a whole essay with an English major student with tons of experience in writing, I still got the exact same grade as before. It comes to show how bias his grading criteria was.
He is a very nice person but is not the best prof. He marks incredibly hard and its almost impossible to improve in his class. I rewrote my essay 4 times and thought it was super well written. I got a C. He is too picky and its discouraging to get such awful marks back. He focuses his energy on a couple students at a time and forgets the rest
Well, he is a tough marker. His feedback is general such as errors and you guys know what you need to improve. If you follow his instructions, he will mark your work differently. Never got any specific feedbacks from him. He replies to emails really slowly and actually not answers your questions. For sure, never take with him again.
I extremely do not recommend anyone take this him as a professor. He is too picky and the toughest grader I have ever had since I first came here. His feedbacks are souseless and so confused, after reading it I do not know what to fix and how to improve correctly.
Extremely harsh marker. Every time I got my assignment back he just never seemed to appreciate or acknowledge my progression in my writing. Im so glad Im over his class! Always asks us to refer to the textbook which is honestly little to no help at all.
Greg is a nice prof but an extremely tough marker and so picky. I went to his office hours every week and he barely helps. I read his comments on my essays and they are so confusing and unhelpful. Definitely do not recommend him and will never take his class again.
Greg is a tough marker for sure, but I find that going to his office hours helps. The feedbacks from my assignments were never really specific and helpful. Make sure to follow his criteria clearly since he purely bases his expectations on those. Overall, Greg is a nice person, but I wouldn't recommend him to students looking for an easy A.
He put plagiarism on me although the content was not taken from 3 different internet sources as he mentioned. Please do not take this instructor save your money and time. I repeat do not take his class.
Greg has very exciting lectures, but other then that I would not recommend him as a professor. Feedback was very minimal, mostly about being more specific.
He focuses a lot on the discussion in class. If you take his class beware you need to discuss a lot. Also, I went to his office hours a lot to see what I can improve on and, all his responses to my work were "be more specific". I'm like "how the heck do I be more specific when you don't tell me!?!". My final word is don't take his class.
Tough and picky marker. His feedback is honestly awful. It's always either "be more specific" or "read the textbook". Constantly refers you to the writing centre rather than a one on one sit down session to go through any questions or concerns. Although lectures are chill, participation is almost mandatory. Take a different professor and save time
He rarely teaches writing techniques, most of the time is used to discuss the contents of the pre-read articles. At least 5 classes were missed during the semester due to national holidays & his absence, but no make-up class is given. Zoom office hours only but hard to make office hours appointments. A waste of time! Learn nothing from his class.
One of the worst profs here by far. There are no lecture notes, nearly every class is a discussion about assigned short stories. For assignments, marking rubrics are never provided. You will not know what mistakes you are making which will also affect you for assignments down the road. Take literally any other prof or you will be left out to dry.
Never take this professor. He never gives marks on assignments even if you put all your efforts in it. His feedback on assignments is always same. Just grammer errors and he will cut 10-15% of total grade. He failed me in the course with 45% and I applied for rechecking by other professors and raised it to 65%. Worst english professor.
Not a good prof never give a specific feedback and cut a lot of grades from grammar. Do not take this class if you are not proficient in writting.
A lot of what he talks about in class isn't helpful to the homework he assigns i.e. multiple lectures on theme vs components of a good analysis. The rubric for the homework is all based on the readings in the textbook and its already content heavy. Sometimes his criticisms are contradictory or opinionated.
Do not take this professor at any cost. Take anyone else. He takes ages to grade and when you get the grade back the comments are not helpful. One of the worst professors I've had.
dont take this course
Deduct too much marks just for minor mistakes.
If this is the last instructor available for a course, you rather leave and wait for the next semester. Don't take this professor, run for your life please especially if English is not your first language and you don't like essay writing. He takes 2 weeks to grade a 500 word summary…. Gives harsh feedback.. etc
I got 50% on 3 of my assignments. I only had one assignment and the exam left. I was so sure I was going to fail and then somehow I how I got a B on my final mark??? Last two were both an A what a miracle. His PowerPoints are useless and he takes off too many marks. I spent like a whole day writing one assignment. This guy is a confusing dude.
Favourite prof so far! Lectures are interesting and relevant! Is extremely enthusiastic and woke, discussions are always fun. As an extremely socially anxious person Greg makes it easy to speak in class and is very supportive. can be a hard marker but gives good feedback and helps form topics. 10/10 prof, I can't understand his previous ratings
Do you want an instructor who blatantly puts in a slide to "look it up" instead of actually teaching it? I'm sure Greg is a great person but not even 2 weeks into this class I already know the quality and experience of learning will be below average.
I absolutely loved Greg when I took him for 1130. There is a lot of homework, discussion posts and a lot of writing but the more you write the better you get at it. Gives good feedback but slow grader. Super engaging and show you how to write a proper essay. Definitely take his course if you need to improve your writing.
English is my first language and I typically do well on writing assignments and essays (receiving 80 as a typical low grade). In Greg's class, I struggle to get something above a 70. He is particular and the expected writing style in this English course is different than other non- English courses. Be aware.
Nice guy but tough marker
