Got sick and he graciously extended homeworks for me.
Great! The homeworks and the practice quizzes help sometimes. Most ppl exempt the final ( 92). He is EXTREMELY nice w/ homework extensions and lame excuses for why you missed pop quizzes (the thurs. before quizzes). Lot of hw on my math lab. Super slow, so use tegrity & watch at 2x speed
Took, fall of 2015. His lectures were being recorded, and seemed that medium wasn't quite inline with his teaching style, but by the middle of the semester he was more comfortable. He is very helpful and typically grants extensions on homework if you need it. Test problems are harder than the homework, so ensure you do extra practice. Go to class.
Very disorganized bad teacher in general
Really helpful if you ask for help.
He reminds me of Dale from Horrible Bosses. Anyways he talks really slowly, so it's best to watch lectures online at 2x speed. There's A LOT of MML homework, but he's super chill on deadlines. Some of his tests are straightforward, but some have questions that are nothing like the ones gone over in class or on the practice quizzes.
Dr. Mayer is a good professor who makes it easy to succeed. The lecture slides are easy to follow, especially if you print them out beforehand. There's a decent amount of online homework, but he understands if you submit something late. The only downside perhaps is that there are only four quizzes before the final, though they aren't terribly hard.
He is a light hearted professor who is dedicated to his students. He explains topics fairly well and he is very available to his students. He even does extra study sessions. However, he does make a lot of mistakes in class. The class has homework but its not unbearable. The tests are fairly easy. If you can take the distance learning section.
Dr. Greg Mayer is a hilarious, well-respected, and incredibly kind guy. He teaches very well and at an appropriate pace, and though the course content may be difficult, he makes it reasonably easy to follow. He is highly accessible during office hours AND VERY HELPFUL IN THEM, and the tests are EXACTLY like the lecture and homework. He's very nice!
I took his linear algebra class online, and I definitely recommend him! Dr. Mayer is a fun and extremely nice person. If his lectures aren't clear enough, he's always willing to help students outside of class, and will stay up late answering Piazza questions. If you understand the homework and practice test, you should be fine.
I love Greg. His lectures weren't always the best, but he was super helpful and nice if you ever asked him for any assistance. He is also rather hilarious. The tests were very easy. There were 4 regular tests, and a noncumulative final. I would highly recommend taking a class with Greg if you can.
Very nice, caring professor. He was often available for extra help and to regrade tests if you requested and was generous about giving points back. Homework wasn't too overwhelming and he would give extensions if you asked. Lectures weren't super dry; he makes some offhand comments that are entertaining but he mostly stays on task
Dr. Mayer is pretty awesome, easily the nicest professors I've had thus far. The test difficulties varied greatly (90 on one test and 50ish on another- even though I studied hard for both and felt I was prepared). He does some participation stuff throughout the semester. The quizzes are pretty short and straight forward.
He is a pretty easy grader and usually gives partial credit on tests. He's also pretty nice and if you ever forgot to do homework on time, you can email him and he'll probably reopen the assignment for a day or two. His lectures are pretty dry and not super interesting, but worth going to if you don't want to learn the material on your own.
I freaking love Dr. Mayer; he is the funniest prof I've had in a while and is so caring! :)
Dr. Mayer definitely care and felt accessible. The homework is very reasonable, usually didn't take longer than half an hour per assignment. Tests did get harder towards the end of the course. But he is more than willing to give partial credit. He gives a "sample midterm" before each test, which is very similar to what the test will be like. 8AM.
I took this class as a Distance Student. Dr. Mayer is very entertaining and cares a lot. I watched all the lectures, did the worksheets in recitation, did the homework and practice tests and had an easy A. At first, I found the class difficult, but you'll realize that the tests are fairly predictable if you just attend class and do the work.
Great prof for linear algebra. Lectures are good but recitation and piazza are more useful in my opinion. Understand the concepts and you will be fine. Tests are predictable. He stays up late to answer questions on piazza.
Solid choice for a teacher -- much better then other available options when I had to take classes. Good teacher, gets ideas across pretty well. Wants students to succeed. Test heavy class (4 midterms plus a final), however tests are very fair and not too bad. Plenty of review material. Textbook isn't used unless you want additional help.
Always available during extended office hours. But Linear was pretty difficult for me nonetheless. His lectures were not that great--he seemed pretty tired during 8AM lectures anyways. Didn't have a great TA either... Tests were pretty straightforward and follow a similar template each time, but I had a difficult time staying afloat.
It was a pure struggle for me all the way through. I went to plus sess and Office Hours and he would always seem tired. Sometimes after me or my friend would ask a question he would just look at us, and there would be a moment of silence for my grade for about ten seconds. Good lecturer though. no curve. My final grade was < 1% away from an A.
Mayer himself is a decent lecturer and will answer any questions you have for him in class. He is also very accessible through office hours. The problem lies in the tests - I would always study the notes and homework in depth and the averages for the test would always still ends up as C's or failing grades. The material itself is easy until tests.
Tests are fairly difficult but he is a good lecturer. Would definitely recommend going to class, very TurningPoint and participation worksheet heavy. Despite the difficulty, gave our class a 9 point curve.
I took the 8 am class, which was recorded for distance learners. All the lectures were posted online. His lectures are good, and he is really accessible, both in office hours and through Adobe Connect. My TA was a PhD student and was not very helpful.
Informative while having a good sense of humor, class is not incredibly difficult but does require effort
I took the class as a distance student. The tests are pretty predictable; if you take the time to understand the homework, you'll be fine. Either watch the lectures or read the book to learn the content. A good lecturer but dwells on proofs and theorems a bit too much for me. He makes an effort to involve the students, including distance students.
He can go through topics pretty quick, so it's great if you've already taken MATH 1553. He's pretty good at explaining things if you have any doubts. His test are very reflective of the practice exams that he posts, he's also a pretty nice and funny guy.
I basically never went to class or recitation and taught myself the class through mymathlab practice and youtube and it worked fine for me, but your mileage may vary. There are in person and online office hours so if you have questions he's super easy to reach.
I had a great time in this class, and didn't really have to learn a bunch of content outside of class. I found the review sheets and practice problems to be really helpful, since they are pretty much exactly the same as the tests. Great professor, fun class!
I had him for MATH 1554. Dr. Mayer is a great and kindhearted professor, but I didn't personally like the style of his lectures. They were more theory based, and I learned more from the textbook (which is not optional, it uses MyMathLab). The tests were moderately difficult, and the TAs were great as well. You can't go wrong with Dr. Mayer.
Dr. Mayer is a very nice guy and super approachable. He's always making jokes and is lighthearted in class. His lecture style isn't particularly enjoyable and you will prob need to read through the textbook to make sure you understand everything. Tests are somewhat hard, but if you understand the theory well, you should be fine.
Dr. Mayer actually cares about his student's success in linear algebra. I found his lectures to be very informative and didn't really need to use the textbook to do well in the class (though I know people who used the textbook a lot). The exams were not too hard and were relatively similar to practice exams given before. Plus he's hilarious.
He was one of the best lecturers I've ever had and truly cares about the subject a lot. That being said, the tests were pretty hard and usually had C averages but he ended up lowering grade boundaries by 9 points (81 was an A, 71 was a B and so on) so most people's grades turned out fine.
Greg is a caring and hardworking professor. That said, he makes quite a few mistakes during his lectures, but he always finds a way to correct himself later. His test are of medium difficulty, but are similar to the previous exams he gives you for practice. Would highly recommend him over any other linear prof!
I love this man with all my heart. Best math professor I've ever had. He made the class fun and entertaining even as an 8am (totally worth it). I would highly recommend him. He is also the coordinator for this course (as of Spring 2020) so he always knows what's up. Very caring too.
Linear algebra is hard and boring but this man is great. I took his 8AM so ended up missing alot of the classes. Prof Mayer posts his notes online so you will never be too pressured to attend the class. Overall a great guy!
Took the summer online diff eq course, and Dr. Mayer's lectures were super easy to follow. He's really responsive to emails and piazza posts, too! Going to his office hours helped me understand a lot, and he's just a genuinely caring and funny professor. Take him if you can!
Best professor ever! He even spends time helping students at odd hours like midnight on Piazza or even discords!
Unarguably the best teacher I've had in my life. This man is so dedicated. You can tell he's really passionate about what he does and cares about the students. He's not there to catch you off guard, but rather he does anything to see his students succeed. My first college professor experience and I love it!
MATH 1554 can be a challenging course for many new students. Mayer does a decent job at helping everyone get adjusted. While some of his lectures may sounds jumbled up at times, he is willing to back-track and individually meet up with people who need to catch up on things. Overall a very caring person.
First lecture the professor rushes through the material with barely any explanation. Students ask for further clarification and his only response is that "this is college, you should have already reviewed the material before class". Exams are abysmally difficult and although Mayer is a nice person, he is an awful and lackluster professor.
I had him in Spring 2020 when we had to transition to online. He was a very caring professor and great lecturer both in person and online. He really tries his best to make sure that his students understand the material and doesn't discourage people from asking questions. He also brought us cookies some mornings :P
Doesn't focus on content during lecture and often gets sidetracked. Ask a question and his answers are typically condescending and thinks everyone taking his class is all freshmen straight out of hs who don't know how to do "college-level math". Don't attend lectures. To do well in this class, attend studio and do all the practice quiz/exams.
Mayer is a great teacher: kind, caring, and a knowledgeable communicator. It's true studio sessions + worksheets are often sufficient on their own though, but I found his prerecorded supplementary videos very helpful too. I didn't attend live lecture very often due to the time but still took a lot away from the class.
Some of the negative criticism in here can be justifiable, though, none of them impede your ability to learn; rather, I think the grade people got pushed them to giving a 1. Lectures go smoothly and preparation is always on point with resources like quizzes and practice tests. He is easily accessible outside of class and is always there to help.
Mayer was an ok prof but the class was very tough + most of the material had to be learned through the supplement videos. The tests were brutal, but I recommend going through the textbook and attending studio (the practice exams were way easier than the real tests). You definitely need to sink a lot of hours into the class to make a good grade.
Professor Mayer is a true Gem, would recommend any math class with him simply because he really cares about what and who he is teaching. He teaches big classes so won't remember names, but that won't stop him from helping you. Also he is pretty funny and very lively during classes, but attendance isn't mandatory. Provides ample resources!
Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Mayer for Diff Eq.
This was one of my favorite teachers. Teacher was helpful and caring. Make sure to read the textbook or it will be much harder to understand things. Quizzes and tests weren't too bad though. Overall an enjoyable class.
He is an amazing professor and will give you what you need to make an A. The practice tests were nearly identical to the real test however it was just different enough that learning the concepts would help more than memorizing problem types. Solid 10/10 professor who made learning math fun even online.
He responds very quickly to student question on Piazza and via email, and also has frequent office hours to help with any questions you might have. Linear Algebra is definitely tough, but Mayer makes it smooth sailing. Make sure to read the textbook and aks questions when you have them because the tests will be tough no matter what.
Very good class overall
Guys I dont know what else to say, tell your friends all about this prof or keep it a secret. This will be one of the best math professors you can find at GT. Ensure you have a slot before telling your friends, dont want to get waitlisted for this course. Surprisingly this was the easiest math course I have ever taken
I had Professor Mayer for 1554 and now 2552, he is by far the best professor I have ever had. Super caring about his students and is a great lecturer. The content is difficult but he makes is easy to understand. Grading is always pretty generous if you try your best. As long as you keep up with the content, he makes the class a relatively easy A.
Decent lectures that go over a decent amount of practice problems, but can get monotonous. Attendance drops heavily over the course of the semester. Took it over summer, and it was relatively straightforward. I suggest going to studio at the beginning to see if TA is any good; might be worth it.
the best professor i have had at gt. course modules on canvas were extremely well organized and lots of study resources were made available. professor was super understanding of personal situations and made it clear what kind of questions would be on assessments. final was worth a lot but nothing this semester was that difficult and notes on tests!
very detailed syllabus. very clear requirements and expectations.
He's absolutely goated. Seriously.
Took the virtual duel enrollment course. Solid Professor and very well organized.
Took Dr. Mayer through GT Distance Math in Fall 2021. The course had asynchronous online lectures, recorded by Dr. Mayer. I thought that the lectures were well-spoken, easy to understand the content. Homework and assessments were fair.
Took Dr. Mayer for Math 2551 online through Distance Math. He didn't create the lecture videos for the course but was responsible for creating assessments. Was accessible in office hours. Test/quiz questions were occasionally written poorly (once a typo that doubled the amount of work needed), but that was balanced by fair time allotments.
Dr. Mayer was an amazing caring professor. His lectures are organized and he teaches well in them. Most assessments and assignments allow unlimited attempts, except for the exams and finals. He is very accessible and answers questions quickly whether in emails or lecture videos or piazza. Great professor.
Dr. Mayer is amazing! He is great about organizing the class and keeping everyone on track to get a good grade, and is available 90-95% of the time to answer any students' questions through Piazza.
If you keep up with your work, his class is very manageable
The sweetest man. I love Greg Mayer. Best math professor.
horrible class way WAY harder than BC calc. Do not take unless you are natually gifted at math and always get 100s
Had him online. Very sweet and understanding. Difficult class though
Great, considerate teacher, does a great job at teaching MV Calc (which is going to be a hard class anyway)
Literally the best professor ever I have him for distance math. Class is pretty easy if you are good at math and watch lecture videos. He also is understanding about extensions- he just gave us three more weeks to do an extra credit assignment (takes 2 hrs max) which we already had two months to do just because some ppl emailed him to change it.
Amazing professor
Great lectures, very flexible, overall amazing professor.
Amazing Professor. Cares about his students.
Dr. Mayer truly cares about his students learning and is willing to help. He is very kind, respectful, and he responds to emails in a timely manner.
Watch the lectures - I took this class as a Distance Student and practically never read the textbook, but his lectures are very detailed (though long towards the beginning of the semester, but it gets better!) The TAs were great, but you'll be fine if you do the homework and practice tests. Very understanding and even extended extra credit WebWorks
I don't know what his voice actually sounds like because I watched all his lecture videos at 2 times speed but I must say they were fantastic. I learned so much and I loved this course.
I took this class as part of the Distance Math program, and it was great! The communication from the professors about what they want from the students is always very clear, there are plenty of easy assignments to get high grades on, and the lectures videos are informative. Overall a very good experience.
Dr. Mayer was very understanding toward students as he extended many deadlines for assignments, and he also responds to emails very quickly (
Dr. Mayer is great! I had him for Fall 2023 as a part of the Distance Math program. He is a great, caring professor who is very responsive. The course is well-designed and easy to do well in.
my goat
Took him over the summer. Very kind, very generous with points. Would 100% recommend him, and would take his classes again if they were required by my major.
I love this man so much. Not only does he have a good understanding of the course content, but he has a genuine passion that is easily accepted amongst students, and overall is a great person/teacher. I took this prof. at GTE, and it was an honor to be in his class. For the class, just practice, it's math muscle memory. Keep it up, Dr. Mayer :)
Extremely amazing person, answers your doubts ASAP, often extends assignment deadlines, exams are pretty similar to the sample ones provided by him in the modules. Easy A if you're a diligent student.
he's actually based
I'm dual enrolled so he is a disembodied voice to me, and I don't really know his personality outside of lectures, but I think his class is pretty easy. I know a lot of people who are struggling in his class because the jump between Calc BC and Lin algebra is huge. But, I think the tests are pretty much the same exact thing as the practice exams.
This was a difficult class for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dr. Mayer had some of the highest quality lecture videos I've ever used and was very responsive via Piazza, not to mention studio sessions or his office hours. Looking forward to multivariable calc.
He teaches well and you can really understand each topic through the videos/textbook, whichever form works best for you. Look through the sample exams as it's very similar or even the same as the actual exams. There's a lot of places to get easy high grades on like the module tests and the homeworks, so if you mess up one exam it's fine.
Professor Mayer provided a lot of methods for students to learn from. Linear Algebra is quite a tough class, especially if you are not strong in math. Make sure to stay consistent throughout the semester because I almost lost my A due to the final. Always do the practice tests and try to do the extra credit. If you can do those, you can succeed.
Incredible professor. The B+ was mostly due to not enough time spent reviewing concepts. Do well on the tests (shouldn't be too hard with his excellent lectures, ESPECIALLY comparatively) and you're set.
Explains material very clearly and demonstrates the derivation of formulas and where theorems come from. Makes sure you understand why things work the way they do. Overall excellent teacher.
Very good teacher, made lecture videos for online class very clear I would definitely take again!
Very chill guy, gave lots of study guides to work off of. Homework makes up a large portion of your grade, be sure to understand it. Tests are relatively simple and only require studying to get through.
I took this course via dual enrollment, so Dr. Mayer is all but present (which is to be expected for an asynchronous course). However, the lecture videos by Dr. Mayer are great, but he is iffy on giving a visual understanding of what everything means. If you are able to find outside resources for this course. you'll do plenty fine.
MATH 1554 and MATH 2551 with Dr. Mayer were great. Although I didn't watch any of his lecture videos (used textbook instead), him and his TAs were active on the class forum and he sent out weekly updates. The textbooks were generally good, though the MATH 2551 textbook wasn't great for Module 4. Exams are super easy if you do the sample exams.
Great lectures and many opportunities for extra credit
This was my first class of online dual enrollment with Dr Mayer and I would like to say that his lectures were very good and he was very active on discussion boards. There was extra credit and he gave a lot of opportunities to get a good grade in the class. Definitely would recommend!
This was my second online dual enrollment class with Dr Mayer and even though someone else did the lectures he was available on the discussion board, which was very helpful. I would recommend taking his class!
Dr. Mayer was so so helpful if you ever had any questions and was very understanding about deadline extensions! I always remember he'd reply to emails within 30 minutes of you sending them as well which was super nice!
amazing guy and professor
Bro is not clear when teaching anything and I was confused the whole time. Had to rely on outside sources to learn.
Good guy madd teaching skills. Wished my homeboy a very happy birthday. But I have a B+ in the class which means that I am a bot. Class is harder than BC dont fall for the anti-BC propaganda.
To Rate a Professor. Very chill dude, wished my boy a happy birthday when asked. Class is super free - miles easier than Calc BC. Don't listen to the haters. Hope he teaches me again. Probably thinks LeBron is the GOAT.
Dr. Mayer is such a great professor. He consistently helps his students understand even the most difficult concepts, he s extrenmely friendly, and his sample exams are very similar to his actual ones. He made me enjoy a class I never thought I would and I finished with an A so thats always a boost. Overall, Dr. Mayer is a generational professor.
I enjoyed Dr. Mayer's class. He provided space to ask questions and always took the time to answer. His lecture videos were very helpful, and the homework was reasonable. The class grade was heavily based on proctored exams, but lots of recourses were provided to prepare. The content was challenging, but Dr. Mayer did a good job teaching it.
He really wants you to succeed. You can depend on him to help you, and he creates a lot of opportunities for you to do well. There is a small extra credit opportunity, but with the way exams are weighted and how much practice is made available, it is very easy to succeed if you put in the effort. Do your homework, and you'll be fine.
He's an excellent teacher and made linear algebra (a relatively hard class) a breeze. He really cares for his students and shows it, offering as many outlets as possible for us to learn and understand the material. He was very clear in all the class procedures, too, which saved me a lot of stress towards the end of the semester.
It was Very Easy
Provides a good amount of resources, albeit less than in linear algebra. Very kind and very accessible. The quality of the lecture videos is worse than in linear algebra, so it is better to rely on the textbook for an understanding of the content. However, I don't think Mayer makes those videos.
Lots of resources, lecture videos were very good, and is very very caring. Willing to exempt assignments if you get sick, and is very accessible.
