Dr. Owens is incredibly easy to learn from. Previously difficult subjects are simply and clearly explained. And, he is never to busy to see a student.
Professor Owens had a good sense of humor as long as he was the one telling the jokes. In the two years I've attended the University I've never met someone so cocky and full of themself. Very unhelpful.
he explains things very well, I enjoyed his class very much.
Owens is a great teacher. Very nice to students. Teaches exactly from his notes. You can miss and its easy to keep caught up.

he's willing to stay all night to help, as well as always willing to help. sticks to his notes, if you keep up you'll be fine. solid professor.
The best chemistry professor at the U. If you want to learn a good foundation for the rest of your classes, then make sure you get him. Knew how to explain things very well, and made the class challenging.
Dr. Owens truly cares about the success of his students. The material and tests are difficult, but not impossible. One can tell that he enjoys teaching.
Excellent.
By far the best chemistry prof at u of u.
VERY hard class, definatly not the class one would take to boost their GPA. If you want to learn general chemistry and you are willing to put in the time, Owens is the teacher for you. He cares a lot about his students and enjoys teaching a lot.

Very challenging and tough but all his notes really help and prepare u to take the next step in chem. for good. He's not definitely what u expect from old school, great sense of humor, interested in things other than chem. like sports and etc. great guy!
Probably the best professor at the U. ALWAYS willing to help out and answer questions and hold extra review sessions. Wants you to love chemistry as much as he does and understand it.
owens is amazing. no way did i think chemistry would be interesting until i started his class. he definitally knows what he's talking about and is a funny funny guy!

He is a good teacher but very sarcastic in a funny way, PS dont ever have a phone on during a test
although i barely passed owens' class, i appreciate all the time he spent helping me when i asked for it. i decided that if you put the time into the course, the material is presented well enough that you can recieve a fairly high grade.
freakin amazing teacher!!
probably the best prof i've ever had. his class is way tough, but he is always willing to help you. his lectures are amazing cause he actually teaches the material during them and he holds his own review sessions before tests (instead of having a TA do it
I had AP chem in Highschool so his class is easy, but Owens still does a great job at explaining chemistry. He is Freakin awesome
Not an easy course but he explains things really well... and then explains them again if you don't get it. Plus the guy's just cool.
Great teacher and nice to look at. Almost made me switch to chemistry. Includes a good amount of physics in his presentation of general chem.
owens is a great professor, gen chem 2, 1220, is a hard class but he is willing to help you out and make sure you understand it. he has an amazing attitude and is a great guy.
Owens is a great professor. Although the class is very hard (I took AP Chem in high school, and I struggle with it). He explains things very clearly and is always very friendly and willing to help in any way he can. Very fair dude.
Very funny and concise. Test questions are very fair; they could be far more difficult. He also provides practice tests and as long as you do all the exercises you should be golden.
Awesome teacher, makes it easy to understand chemistry, plus he makes class fun, is very willing to help outside of class, awesome!
Professor Owens works his ass off to make sure every one of his many, many students has the opportunity to do well in his class and learn Chemistry inside and out. One of the most awesome things about his class is the way he motivates his students.
Owens is one of those professors that actually cares about his students learning the material. Chemistry is tough, but he has a way of explaining it so that it can actually be understood! I thought the lectures were very helpful, I wouldn't skip them, he even gave extra credit once for being in class, so go! He is a good guy, great professor!

Great teacher. Lectures are very fun and interesting to go to. He loves this stuff, and you can tell it by the amount of prep he puts into the class. His tests are very tough, and require more prep than any other class, but at the end of the semester he finds a way to help out his students make up for the difficulty. Highly recommended teahcer.
Owens motivates you by failing you on just about every exam. The emphasis isn't on learning... it's on passing the class. No matter how hard you study you'll still fail. He's one of the better Chem teachers here... if that tells you anything.
VERY difficult class. Exams were next to impossible. Nice guy with a sense of humor.
owens basically only cares about himself. he is pretty good at giving lectures, but he finds every way possible to give you the worst grade possible. he will tell us things that we will for sure have to know for the test, and come test time, none of will be there. his tests are rediculous.
He is a great Professor that wants his students to succeed in his class and in life. He is really helpful one on one.

Owens is probably the best chemistry teacher currently out there. He really wants you to understand the material and will actually go the extra mile with you one on one until you get it. You definetly have to work hard, but Owens will make it worth your while if you do.
kind of arrogant and not very friendly at all, but funny none the less. hard class
Has been my favorite prof in college so far.
His lectures were very informative and his side comments were fun too. His exams are very challenging so just study hard and you'll do fine. He's very willing to answer questions for you also.
Best professor I have ever had. Work hard and you will learn chemistry very well with Owens. He is totally willing to help you out outside of class as well.
His lecture style was really easy to follow and he had lecture notes posted on the internet which proved usefull. The tests are very difficult and require a high level of comprehension. He's a great teacher but his class requires a lot of independant study. Do the practice problems and you should be fine!
Awesome professor, intimidating, but he really knows his stuff and he keeps his lectures interesting.
Okay, so I think Dr. Owens really knows his stuff. He is a very intelligent man. His biggest problem is that he is far too arrogant. I have seen him act disrespectful to students, yet he demands respect because of his position. His tests are really difficult and sometimes tricky. He hasn't been at U of U long only a few years. If his attitude
he is the best teacher of chemistry that i ever had!!!
Best Teacher I have ever had at the University of Utah. If you have to take a chem. class try your hardest to get into owens class. You won't regret it! He's not easy but he's interesting and he actually teaches you. Wants you to succeed not fail. Tis wonderful!!
His exams are hard but otherwise hes a good teacher
The best teacher I've had at the U. He's the kind of teacher who makes you a better student and person just from having taken his class. His dedication to what he does is really inspiring and encouraging. He's a really funny, really cool guy and he really inspired me to like chemistry a lot. I highly recomend taking his class.
Good guy, but his tests are ridiculously hard. I suggest going to his office hours to get to know him and he will help you out a TON.
Best lecturer that I have had. You will not fall asleep in his class. He does not use tricky multiple choice tests. Tests are hard but fair. Very hard class.
Owens is an excellent professor. I would say this class made me develop a love hate relationship with chemistry. Owens inspires me to learn it well so I study a lot for this class, but the tests will literally kick your *ss. So that is kind of discouraging. Still. And yes, yes he is very good looking.
Don't take Ernst! Owens is way better! His class is super hard, but totally worth it because you will walk out of it with a true knowledge of chemistry. Great lecturer, always interesting. You can't rely on the book or book exercises because he tests off his lectures, which are at a much higher level and of course harder coursework. Life-changing.
He is a good professor. I just had a rough time with him. He actually ended up writing us a letter telling us he is quiting and that someone else was going to finish the last three weeks of class. He ended up staying but it was hard to respect someone who is so intelligent and actually likes what he does to do something like that.
Great lecturer. Hard tests.
Greg's amazing! He's extremely intimidating, but he's really the nicest down to earth guy. His class inspired me to change my major to chemistry. His exams are hard but the knowledge you get from his class stays with you for years after. Well worth the challenge.
Very poor with regards to going over concepts or the basics which is a problem in Gen Chem I. Glosses over all basics and rushes to advanced material which is hard to understand without basics. Got nothing from lecture, felt like taught myself the class, tests very hard. Too much time spent on unnecessary tangents(not all chem related )
Characteristic, funny individual, but barely covers important info in lectures. The quizzes and homework are incredibly challenging (took me a week to do 10 problems), and require for you to practically teach yourself. Testing on very involved info that was not covered in lecture is fairly bad style. Other than that, his courses are very reasonable
I love this class! Owens is always available to give help and his lectures are interesting and he teaches the material very clearly. He gives you everything you need to know for tests and doesn't make keeping a good grade impossible. He's one of my favorite teachers!
I absolutely HATE this class. I would definitely try to avoid him if possible. He is also very arrogant and almost makes you feel stupid when you don't know something. tests are hard. and lectures do not cover anything that he tests on. He barely mentions the material that is on the tests so you don't learn it in lecture and must teach yourself.
I agree with the comment posted below. Try to avoid him unless you want to fail at Chemistry. There are very few tools for success in this class.
He's a lean, mean, chemistry machine. He can be arrogant at times, but he always tells you how it is with less BS on the side. Exams are hard, but all the Q's are from the book. His lectures are really good and he does demos quite often. If you wish to learn chemistry take it from Owens, none of the other professors invest their time for us like him.
This guy is a great teacher. He really knows his stuff. He uses a lot of different materials to teach including the clicker questions during lectures, online homework questions, the book, etc. Great professor. He doesn't make the class easy but isn't that the point? It's difficult enough to push you to truly learn the material. I recommend him.
This professor is very helpful and has a great class, it may not be the easiest class but there is no reason to fail or do poorly unless you do not even bother to try, attend and read and it is a great class!
Professor Owens is a great teacher. He is very willing to help his students pass the class and he makes it challenging enough that you actually have to study the material. In class clicker questions help to make sure you understand what he is saying in class and the homework solidifies it. Tests can be difficult, but they ARE to judge what you know
It really breaks my heart to see comments about him that are disappointingly rude. He's a professor that is truly dedicated to helping students learn, and in my opinion, if you try hard to learn, the good grade usually comes with it. If you don't get a desired grade, study harder. Nothings truly hard if you really try, right?
Owens is a GREAT chem teacher. Chem is a hard subject that actually requires studying. In response to some of the negative comments below, these individuals probably dont complete the homework assignments, attend class, or try at all. This class isn't an "easy A". Owens actually wants you to learn chemistry and is great at helping you get there.
Owens is department chair in CHEM, but I honestly think he takes teaching even more seriously than chemistry. The guy gives us every kind of support if we want to learn, and if class is pretty challenging, it's also fun! I've had very few teachers that are better at teaching and more dedicated to helping students succeed. This guy is an A teacher.
Contrary to some reviews, Dr. Owens is one of the most helpful professors I've had this year (im a freshman). I think the reason the ratings for this class are as low as they are is that a lot of students in this class are used to grades being handed to them, which is unrealistic in college. Besides, they can use the SI, homework, and office hours.
Amazing teacher! I took this class several years ago at a diff Univ and hated it. Dr. Owens made it fun. I went from dreadin chem to enjoying it. The class itself is hard (what Chem isnt?) but he's thorough and explains very well. He also makes class fun. He even took time out of his schedule to do a ?/ans session befor a test. Highly recommend
I am at the University of Utah for my second degree and of all the professors I have had at both Universities, Owens has cared most about the success of his students. There are some many resources available to students of the class to practice, ask questions, and just get extra help. Owens is a top notch professor.
Great Professor - inspiring and genuine. His classes are interesting and extremely helpful. His presentations definitely teach the concepts, allowing them to stay with you. His tests ARE challenging. I appreciate that students actually have to put forth effort to achieve a good grade. Grateful I took this course from him - enhances perspective.
Professor Owens is indeed one of the greatest professor in the University. He is really helpful towards students. When questions are asked, he would explain it briefly and he would always ask if we have any questions. He makes a lot of changes such as adding more practice problems,he stop class lecture just to ask students what he can do to improve
Owens is the perfect human being! He's so encouraging and supportive, not just about chemistry, but about life. There are no inane rules in this class (like having a textbook you don't use, not knowing when stuff is due, not knowing what's on the test, etc.) He's just so awesome he makes angels cry.
This guy is amazing. I've never had a professor care so much about his students. He was very helpful and has tons of tools and resources to help you learn. I would recommend him to anybody. And the demonstrations he does are very cool and give you a good understanding of what you are learning.
Pretty good guy, wants you to learn, but makes ridiculous tests ad tries to make them pretty difficult. Very smart, and sometimes show-offy about his intelligence. I thought he was good at explaining things simply though. Not very open minded to what other students think of his class, but he is pretty cool. I'd give him 8/10. We all have our flaws.
Nice guy, not open to feedback. He got disappointed in the class for what like 2 students posted about him on this website, so a lot of these comments were given on that exact day, so don't let all of those influence your decision in taking class from him. Extremely hard tests and it is hard to be prepared for them. I'd recommend someone else.
Owens gives you all the tools you need to pass. But for people that have to work full time and have other things on top of school, this class might not be ideal. You HAVE to devote a lot of time to pass. I didn't do as well as I would have liked because I work full time and probably didn't study as much as I should have. But he knows his chemistry.
This class was by far the most difficult class I have taken. However, I feel like I have learned SO much, and he really cared about everyone learning the material and doing their best. He was very clear about what was expected and taught us how to really learn. Tests were very challenging, but if you put in the work, you get a whole lot out of it.
This isn't that hard if you put in some effort. He goes over everything you need to know in class, and be sure to do the worksheets given in discussion and understand them, then you should easily do well in the class.
He is a super helpful teacher. A lot of people complain about how hard he is, but it is chemistry, and it just doesn't come to you, you do have to study and follow the 2-3 hours of studying for each credit hour. I was VERY impressed by his teaching style and how approachable he was. His tests were difficult but not out of reach.
Owens is one of the better professors I've had. He clearly covers the material, effectively uses class time, and openly offers assistance.
The tests are hard if you do not go to discussion, if you do go, the packets are pretty much exactly what will be on the test. I passed the class skipping all of the: discussions, homework problems and 1 of the tests. I do not understand how some people can say you should avoid him.
This professor is my hero. His class is hard, but he is a supportive and helpful teacher if you are willing to work. I am not the best at chemistry, but he thought I could handle things I didn't have faith in myself for and encouraged me to do my best. He recommended me to be a TA, and I appreciate him so much for believing in me!
He is an amazing teacher!! I suck at chemistry and his tests were the EASIEST THING ON THIS PLANET! People who struggled just never studied! My GPA in Highschool was a 2.8 PE student. And i got an A- in his class. And i never talked to the guy... I just did all the homework which is worth worth 70% of the grade.
Loved him. So hottttt! Apart from looks, he's very smart, and funny, and is very helpful to his students. Highly recommended, esp. if you like cute professors, lol. Be prepared to pay attention though!
Professors like Dr. Owens are one in a million. Before I took the class, I *dreaded* it. Within a week, however, I'd fallen in love with chemistry. Dr. Owens explains concepts clearly and simply. He's engaging, approachable, and has a great sense of humor. Plus, lectures almost always include some sort of (really interesting) demo!
I HATE chemistry. But Professor Owens made me love it! He is engaging, caring, funny, and one of the most interesting people I've ever met. If you do the work and focus on the lectures, the grade will come. It's also nice that the final can make up for all horrible grades! What's more is Owens is really nice to look at, which spices up the lecture.
Professor Owens knows a lot and is passionate about his teaching. He is a very fair about earning the grade you deserve. You definitely have to work for your grade, but he wants you to succeed and you will end up liking chemistry a lot more than you thought. I certainly never thought I could like Chemistry, but if anyone can do it, Dr. Owens can!
I was extremely impressed with Professor Owens. He spent time teaching us the material clearly, then made it applicable through demonstrations and videos. He was very fair and always provided histograms after tests. I would recommend him to anyone.
Best professor at the U! Tough? ...sure. But he's amazing!
Owens was such a great professor. I had never taken a chemistry class up until this point, but the professor was so great and did an excellent job at relating the topics we learned in class to everyday life. He is understanding and very helpful. I took it online and he did his lectures through videos. And he has a bit of a sense of humor
Owens is great. I had him for Gen Chem 2, and I took it online which was difficult, but so worth it. He had great video lectures, which had 1-10 questions embedded in them. One of my favorite things was that he broke down the scores and sent a weekly email telling you what the average was on each assignment. Would definitely recommend him.
Owens was amazing at helping me out when i was failing this class somehow i managed to pass. He has weekly homework, quizzes, and lecture videos that are graded exams are really hard you need to know your stuff however everyone who's not taken it with him regret it because other professor are much harder he actually wants you to pass and succeed.
I highly recommend his online chem 1210 class. Well organized online class, great lecture videos, not overbearing, and not hard to get an A as long as you do the work.
Professor Owens changed my perspective on chemistry! He was the best professor I've ever had, by far. He cares about his students and actually wants you to succeed. The class material is tough, but he gives so many resources, it makes it easier to succeed. I felt like he got to know each student, which is rare in an online class. He's the best!
Stay away from Greg Owens. I'm currently in his online course and it's the worst class I've ever been in. lots of homework and the tests/quizzes are full of questions that are nothing like the material in lecture videos or homework. I used to love chem but I now hate it because of this course. No need to study, the test will be a surprise anyway.
I have loved the online Gen Chem 2 Course. I have still managed to learn from it, which I was worried about seeing as it was online. The lecture videos he does are great and some of them are even kind of funny. He includes questions to answer along the videos so that you know if you're understanding the material. I recommend the online course.
Greg Owens is brilliant, and has created a great online version of chem 1 and 2. These classes are brutal, but you're learning chemistry, so buck up buttercup. Any low rating on here is from an angry student that gave up and needed to blame somebody else.. period. I'll take what Owens taught me through the rest of my life, and that's sayin somethin
I took this class online, and although Chemistry is a hard subject for me, I felt like the lectures were very helpful. I suggest taking it online because then you can watch them whenever and replay the videos later if you need to. He was a great professor for a subject I hate.
Owens is a fantastic professor who knows what he's talking about and really gets the material across. He makes you work for your grade but you learn a lot by the end of the semester. Very clear in his expectations from the start. I highly recommend taking chemistry from him.
The online videos were helpful but to fully understand the material you really need to read the textbook. He sometimes glazes over topics in the lecture videos.
I expected to teach myself the material for this class, seeing as it was online. However, Owens's videos were extremely helpful and I found myself not even needing to use the textbook. His tests are very straightforward and his expectations are clear. I would HIGHLY recommend this course to anyone who is looking for a competent chemistry professor.
Dr Owens is by far the best professor I have had at the University of Utah, which should be saying something because I've never actually met him!! Chemistry is a hard subject but he prepares you well! The test are exactly like the homework problems and the homework problems are exactly like to example problems in the book! He's also hilarious!
Greg is a good teacher and I like the way his class is set up. I have done well in this class, but have a lot of chemistry background. I believe the tests in this class are unfair. They are extremely difficult and cover material beyond our course. He also does not curve. If the tests were toned down or curved, this would be an amazing class.
Professor Owens is an amazing teacher and I would 10/10 take him again.I won't lie, it is a difficult class, and it was probably more difficult because I took it online, but Professor Owens is always willing to help if you message him. As long as you make sure you get the assignments done on time, and put effort in, he is more than fair with grades
In my experience, it's extremely difficult to find a likable chemist. Greg Owens is a rare exception. Chemistry 1210 is the hardest class I've ever taken, but Owens is the best chem professor I've ever had. His lectures are the best I've encountered in an online course, he's funny, accessible, and seems to genuinely cares about student success.
With the way that the class is structured as an online-only class, Professor Owens gives you all the tools you need to succeed, and the rest is up to you. You work for your grade, and he provides resources for additional help and support to make sure you can do your best.
Greg has changed his class so that there are no tests. Sounds great right, wrong. First off he is not helpful, he will not meet with you in person for office hours, and you learn nothing from his videos. Finally, although you don't have tests, you have a final knowledge check which is an exam in the testing center that is worse than an actual test
If you're someone who doesn't have good time management skills, just don't. I don't and its just been constant stress this semester. He also isn't like super understanding. Probably just doesn't like me, but never gave me extension and I like have dyslexia and paperwork from the CDA. Good lectures though.
Dr. Owens is a solid Chem professor, and I wish I had the chance to meet him in person. He is informative and will answer any questions you have quickly. The only problem is the online platform that he uses for homework, ALEKS, is infuriating, and will make you want to punch your computer more than once. Oh, and we never had exams or a final!
Owen is a professor who will make you work for it, but don't view that as a bad thing. He posts weekly videos (for the online class) and you have homework due weekly. The homework can be tedious because he uses a program called ALEKS which is super obnoxious. Make sure to ALWAYS watch the videos - quizzes are all based on the videos.
As someone who also took Owen's 1210 class, 1220 is much, much harder. Owens changed the way the online classes work, and its clear he and the department are still working out how to do it effectively. This class demands work, lots of work, and the knowledge checks don't always seem fair, but your grade may be better than in a normal class here.
Summer. Owens uses ALEKS, which is a lot of work and requires students to look into the explanation tab a lot. Combined with his video lectures, we're looking at a lot of time spent on this one class. The videos aren't super useful but are required for the quiz. However messing up a bit on exams seems to be fine if you put in the work all along.
Owens is uber intelligent & teaches at that level. I love his broad vocabulary and humor. His lecture videos are well-executed & helpful. His grading policy is unique & generous. As long as you can devote plenty of time, you'll do well. This course is challenging but prepares you well for 1210. You will grow as a student if you work hard.
The online class is easy, but Owens is rather rude and unprofessional if you make him take time out of his real life to ask questions. So if you take the class, just make sure that you dont have to interact with him and the experience will be 10x better.
Taking this chemistry class online was my biggest mistake. I had a very high college GPA and this class just tanked it. He uses the ALEKS system so all homework and exams are through that. If youve ever used it before, you know how awful it is and if you havent, stay away from it at all costs. Only think not on ALEKS are quizzes random. DO NOT TAKE
NO TESTS! More like online quizzes which are exactly like the homework so if you do homework, then you'll ace the "tests". If you're taking this course online be aware of due dates because some homework assignments will creep up on you. The module quizzes are just like the lectures/videos so pay attention to those.
Professor Owens was pretty chill, as long as you can manage your time the class isn't that hard. A lot of people hate Aleks, but its not that bad if you can figure out the patterns you are golden, owens was always able to meet with me when i needed help and some of the ta's were great at helping to, best part was when he made the final optional!
Online chem 1210, although there were a ton of quizzes on random days he gives 3 tries, i never got less than 100% on a quiz, and its ALEKS heavy. Each exam builds on eachother so if you do better on the second or third (final) exam, it replaces your worse score(s). Im taking chem 1220 with him next semester!
Professor Owens outlook on learning chemistry is respectable. He is more focused on his students efforts towards learning the material, than he is on test grades. He lets you rework test questions missed for half credit. Just do the homework on time, and study for the test and you'll pass with a surprisingly good grade.
I love Aleks the course was amazing and I never imagined I'd be able to get such a good grade in a chemistry course! He makes it easy to understand and interesting to learn!
Owens seems to genuinely care about his students. He made the final optional and lets you make up missed exam questions for half credit. The course primarily uses ALEKS, which you'll end up spending around 6 hours a week on. The program is super frustrating at times though. Plan your time accordingly and you will do well. Best prof for gen chem.
Greg Owens is an outstanding professor and true educator. His passion for teaching is evident and he does all he can to set you up for success. It is uncommon to have a professor of this caliber more than once or twice in a college career. Take advantage, if you can. Brilliant guy. Chemistry is challenging, but taking Greg's course is worth it.
I took chem 1 with Owens and loved it, i got an A, but he has completely changed the way he "teaches"the course and in my opinion has given up. The whole class is graded on 3 test the average being 60%, he believes the problem is his students not studying and not his lack of teaching. He said if i don't like my grade then i should just withdraw.
Professor Owens straight up told my class he did not care if 95% of the class failed we would all receive F's on our transcripts. He refused to curve the test or the class ( you are only graded on 3 tests) and does not care how you do in his class. I was told if i didn't like this policy I should drop.... so thats exactly what i did.
Professor Owens is great! The class is somewhat difficult if you have a hard time managing your time, but if you really utilize the materials he provides, you have a pretty good chance of doing well. There are only 3 tests (and curves them pretty generously) and a final, but he drops the lowest exam or makes the final optional. Super smart & funny!
I took this class thinking Chemistry would be an easy (and interesting) fill for my math/science elective. While definitely interesting, I wouldn't take the class again unless it was required. Part of this was the difficulty. The exams were very difficult and most people got very low scores for the most part.
Really great professor! Cares a lot about his students and their success. Beware of TOUGH tests... average always in 50-60%. He does curve and has a generous grading scale. Great class if youre not scared of tough tests!
Grade is only made up of 3 tests, but there is an optional final that can replace 1 of your test grades. The tests are so incredibly difficult. I studied a lot and did a lot of chem in high school but still didn't do great. Most of the class scored around 50%. The final is the one from ACS so it's a ton easier than his tests. Chem online is rough
Professor Owen's class is a two for one deal, sign up for chemistry and get radical liberal politics for free. He's very good at teaching the material, but it isn't at all worth the baggage of the class. Be very careful what you say around him because he's very touchy about people with wrong opinions.
Professor Owens is, so far, one of my best professors. He is very thorough in his correspondence with students and he makes online learning feel warmer than you'd expect. He is very understanding and you can tell he has a passion for what he does.
He was an average chemistry teacher. While there wasn't a ton of mandatory homework, you had to do lots of optional homework if you wanted a good grade. The tests and quizzes are insanely difficult, but the homework itself isn't too bad. The tests and quizzes also hardly ever give you enough time or enough tries to get the correct answer.
Took it a couple of semesters ago but the grade was based off only 3 tests, which were incredibly stressful and difficult. Optional homework for practice, and he seemed to be passionate, but the difficulty of the tests just weren't worth it.
My favorite Professor of all time! He will work you hard and it is not an easy A, but if you care and put in actual effort he will notice you. Definitely have a zoom meeting with him because he is awesome to talk to and will really help you improve. Such a great guy! I took both Chem 1210 and 1220. Best decision ever made!
Oh man, oh man. It is back-and-forth with Prof. Owens... I took two semesters of chemistry with him and both suffered the same downfalls but the second semester was far worse. He comes off as exceptionally arrogant and his tests don't reflect any of the homework material. It is as though he enjoys seeing his students suffer on exams.
Incredibly difficulty class and not much interaction with the new class update of online class only. The tests did not at all reflect the homework, review sessions, or concepts taught in class. Instead of teaching the class the professor just threw everyone on huge twists to see everyone fail. The tests or any of the assignments are not curved.
Professor Owens' online course is organized and flexible. The tests are more difficult than the homework and lecture problems, but the prerecorded lectures and material available give you the resources you need to do well. For a self-guided, online class I don't think I could have asked for much better.
I do the mastering reading and assignments and feel very up to pace, but as soon as I take an exam written by Owens I can barely get through a single problem. The probs on exams are NOT reflective of hw and are MUCH harder than anything we encounter prior to the exam. Feels as if he takes pride in his exams being too difficult for most ppl to pass.
Professor Owens is a great teacher. I took Chemistry 1210 and 1220 from him online over the last two semesters. He posts lecture videos on canvas that are packed with information. At times I didn't need to read the textbook and instead spent time watching the videos which saved time. Very caring professor who is always willing to work with you.
I took this class online, so I had to use the textbook heavily. The quizzes and tests are similar to the homework but harder. There is no extra credit offered but he did curve the grades at the end. There are two homework assignments and a quiz every week.
Prof. Owens taught very well during COVID-19 in Fall 2020. We used Pearson's Mastering Chemistry which really helped solidify concepts into my head. Exams are a bit rough, and there's a weekly quiz, but it really wasn't as bad of a class as I thought. The last time I took chemistry was 3 years ago and I still did amazing. I recommend him.
Super chill guy. Really uplifting during covid and cares about his students. Hes always there to help and is super clear and forward with what needs to be done. Tests are tricky if you dont study beforehand
Cynical professor. He was rude in the emails and would accuse of not reading or watching videos if questions were present. The course was easy, took no time, and a monkey could pass. However, the professor was extremely unprofessional in his comments and openly degraded students for not understanding. Avoid him.
My biggest complaint would be that the tests weren't always reflective of the homework from that week, but the TAs were more than happy to help if you were confused. When I took the class, there was homework due Mon/Wed/Fri and there was a weekly quiz. You had three attempts on the quiz and there was no final. Pretty easy class but it took effort.
Overall was a fine class, although I didn't interact with him very much as it was an online class. The class wasn't very difficult, just assignments and quizzes, which we had 3 attempts on. My only complaint is that we can't see the right answer if we got a question wrong, even though the questions changed. I emailed him and he was helpful though.
This class was online for Spring 2021, not sure if the same class format will be used in the future but we did not have exams, which was an absolute life saver. There were weekly quizzes and homework which forces you to stay on top of the material. Don't go looking to Prof Owens for kind words of hope or simple questions- he will treat you poorly.
I didn't end with a great grade (B-) in 1210. HW is usually due Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, but Owens gives you all the resources to understand everything. There are some really helpful lecture videos, and the book explains concepts well. I worked 40+ hours this sem., but if you have the time and dedication you can certainly pass with an A.
Prof Owens is a really good guy. His lectures are interesting and he explains things well. Hard to get a super good gauge because it was totally asynchronous but he is very willing to work with students. He restructured the whole curriculum before this semester and cares about students learning the material.
I took this class over the summer and it was completely online. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. Greg is very difficult to reach and so were the TAs. The exams were heavily weighed on the grade and were graded very harshly. For each exam, the average was about 50%. Yes, grades get curved, but the exams are nearly impossible. Don't take this online.
Very difficult course. Grades are basically based off of 4 exams. So many mastering chemistry assignments, that do not relate to exams. TA's weren't helpful at all during the office hours. Would not recommended this course, fully online.
Owens seems to be a polarizing; it's because he pushes you to actually learn and work. If you don't want to do the work for the class yet still want to pass, he's not the professor for you. If that's you, he cares about what you learn more than you do, quite frankly. I was looking to gain knowledge, and Owens' $spent to info learned ratio is ideal
I enjoyed my semester with Professor Owens. He is a teacher that cares about the success of his students. Our course was completely online and Professor Owens prepared pre-recorded 10-20 minute lectures for each chapter. This format allowed me to pause and take notes and rewatch lectures to study for exams.
This class was rough but Owens provides all the resources needed to do well. The textbook explained stuff really well and the learning center tutors were tons of help. But overall my mental health took a toll. Too much stress for one course.
Professor Owens is great at teaching and helping you learn. His online classes are very helpful as he gives you access to so many resources. If you communicate and are clearly going all of the homework assignments and putting in the time, he is very accommodating and understanding of mental health as well. His classes help lay a great foundation.
does not really teach alot. only grade is exams and they were nothing like he said. homeworks not really graded and theres no actual lecture times just videos. to do well you have to teach yourself. this class made me rethink school. i would not take it online ever again. i have to retake the class in person.
Mr. Owens has an ego, is extremely condescending, literally shames his students for their mistakes or when they ask for help, takes no accountability, is not approachable; to name a few. He doesn't want students to succeed & it shows in the fact that final grades are solely based on exams (despite the fact that there is loads of homework). RUN!
This is my second time taking a class with professor Owens, I gave him the benefit of a doubt after my first course with him, but after this second course, I am in utter disbelief. He has made his tests nearly impossible to pass unless you spend more than 20+ hours on the course the week. DO NOT go to him expecting help or guidance.
Prof. Owens is very hands-off when it comes to his sections, his lecture videos are fast, long, numerous, and his answer keys are vague. The sheer volume of information you are expected to retain is unprecedented. If you do not prioritize his course beyond all others you are taking , you will NOT receive a passing grade, let alone an "A".
Don't get me wrong, Chem II is hard. Chemistry in general is a hard subject that takes a lot of practice. Yes, he grades off of 3 tests, but his assignments count for 10% extra credit. Each assignment is similar to the questions he uses on his tests. If you do the assignments, watch the lectures, and practice, you'll do well.
Professor Owens is probably one of the highest quality professors I've ever had in an online course. The material you need more than anything for this class mostly comes from his lecture videos which are pretty good and actually show you how the chemistry applies to fields like medicine. Grade is based on 3 exams, so be wary of that.
Proff. Owens seems very proficient in the course material, and his video lectures do a good job of explaining the concepts, but the online course structure was terrible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FULLY ONLINE. There are only 3 tests that go on your grade during the semester. The course is formatted very poorly and gives limited resources. Any time a student has reached out to him, we have gotten rude and unprofessional responses; no empathy. There have been enough of us that we have contacted the dean, to no avail.
I took CHEM 1210 w/ him over the summer thinking he's tough but fair but this class was TERRIBLE. He did not care at all about his students (ex: he posted an extremely rude & unprofessional announcement at 10 pm scolding all of us after the exam average was too low). His videos are good but you'll need to spend 15+hr/wk to get a B (if you're lucky)
Owens is not a good professor. He did little to help students succeed and blamed poor grades on students. One announcement sent to us said you are taking a giant dump on your opportunities when referencing poor exam performance. He is not good at accommodating students. He is condescending, arrogant, and unprofessional in emails.
He is definitely one of those professors you should actively try to avoid, especially for an online class. He is condescending, blames the students for poor grades, and the homework takes 10+ hours/week if you want to stay caught up. Everything in this course is self-taught and too difficult (extremely low average grades on tests (50%) show this).
Entire grade was based on 3 exams with only 10% extra credit for completing mastering chemistry assignments. He treated us students very disrespectfully, emailing us things such as "Thank you for adding considerable to the hell that students have put me through" and "Do not message me again." DO NOT TAKE CLASSES FROM THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS
He is extremely not professional. He makes tons of number typos on his exam which doesn't make sense. Even though he makes typos, he requires students to be smart enough to catch it and blame those who couldn't solve it. Furthermore, he is overreacting to all the emails that students send and believes students are blaming him
All I can say is that he is incredibly rude to students and thinks he can get away with saying whatever he likes. The course material is hard and when A LOT of students reached out for help, he refused to take accountability for his part in the problem. He should not be a professor.
Please do not take this professor. His grading criteria is based on only three exams. He is extremely unprofessional and send the students emails late at night basically shifting the blame to them for not understanding the material even though I gave you everything to pass mentality. He is condescending in his announcements as well. Just beware.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Owens was extremely unprofessional throughout the course, and progressively got worse. I was always so afraid of talking to him and asking for help because of all the horrible experiences my peers were having, being blamed for everything even if we were trying our hardest. I dont know how he still works here.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever taken at the U. Grade is based off of 3 exams and EC is 10% from the MasteringChem. The other chem class is 25% extra credit from MC and allows test corrections. There is no curve or test corrections in this class. He blames students for everything and is unprofessional in his emails + announcements.
Worst prof ever. He thinks we are complaining about the difficulty of the class, but we really are complaining about his attitude and lack of professionalism. Loves to blame and degrade students. Great person, but teaching is not for him. A good educator would never shift blames on students but to do a self-reflection. Avoid at all cost.
I did well in this class and Owens treated me with more respect than other students because of it. Seeing the blatantly rude emails he would send students who were struggling in the class was sickening. Youd think a professor would want to help students when the exam averages were always in the 50s, not berate and belittle them.
I didnt mind the lectures, they were great, and the online format didnt bother me. However, his professionalism was downright disgraceful. I did the work and got a good grade out of it. He was rude through announcements and emails to studentsrespect goes both ways. For those who were respectful to him and were treated unfairly by him I am sorry.
There were only 3 exams and an extra 10% for the MC probs. But he was super rude and didn't seem to even want to be a professor. He scolded us for doing badly on tests but didn't offer any new methods/resources to help us improve. It's like he was pointing out a leaky faucet, saying it'll cause a massive flood and then waiting for it to happen.
As others have said, tough class, mean professor. Our reference sheet was pretty laughable. I took him in the summer when we could make our own and he complained we "put too much in there" and accused us of not knowing the information. So I guess this semester he had something to prove. Just know your entire semester will be focusing on chem
This semester has been difficult, the grade was 3 exams and I am not sure if I will pass. I feel it is a combo of my lack of effective study skills and a course structure of only 3 tests. Owens has been very empathetic to me, but some peers have struggled with him. Personally, I think the pandemic has taken a toll on him and he needs a vacation.
Prof Owens is the worst professor I've ever had. He was extremely rude and unhelpful. Tests are 100% of the grade and the averages show that he doesn't prepare the class for them. He also ridiculed the entire class for doing poorly on the tests. Do not take a class from him ever.
I was frustrated because although I spent hours studying, did all the homework, etc., I still did poorly on the exams. However, when I contacted him directly and asked to review the test, he seemed happy to help. I think the issue is not with him as a person but how the class is structured- being graded on only three tests is rough.
If you like paying for a college class while aren't properly taught materials in class. You like paying for resources on top of it & spending double the amount of time it should take- this class is for you! Seriously, this class is set up terribly. He skips basic material and doesn't have the humility/self reflexivity to even realize it.
The content of this course was not difficult, but the organization of the class made the course difficult. Our grade was composed of 3 exams, of which the material given didn't entirely match what we were tested on. Professor Owens was accessible, but perhaps not to the extent people may have liked. I will commend how much he knows his stuff though
DON'T TAKE ANY CLASS FROM HIM (WAS A HORRIBLE CHOICE).
In my class, which had around 170 students, the averages for our exams: Exam 1: 61.7, Exam 2: 60.3, Exam 3: 51.7. This is how he addressed the class after Exam 2: "I have heard, through one means or another, a common sentiment that Exam 2 was unfair, and I could hardly agree more. Exam 2 was unfair. It was too easy."
He was rude, condescending, seemed to enjoy berating the entire class. Entire grade based on three tests and 10% EC from hw. Averages on the tests were all Ds, with a solid 52% on the third one, which he made up for by simply adding 12% to everyones grade. Good for me, as my grade went from a 91 to a 96, but it never should have come to that anyhow
Professor Owen's course was a challenge. Perhaps too much of a challenge for an entry level chemistry class. The info wasn't the easiest to follow. I know my study habits and work ethic are lacking for what this demands, so the best way I've found to view the class is as a challenge and a way to improve to make future classes easy.
I think Professor Owens is very honest and realistic. He is willing to help you and answer any questions you may have. When I took the class, your grade basically depended on 3 tests. Your homework was considered bonus credit(10%). He lays his expectation out clearly and is very transparent throughout the semester. Do not expect him to baby you.
no extra credit points off easily
It was a wild ride
I loved this class as someone who prefers to make their own structure. If you study with the practice quizzes and regular quizzes in a way to allows you to understand them, you should do well on the exams (which is what the final grade is based on). Dr. Owens even adjusted the grading scale to allow more people to get A's.
I'm here to beg you to take Chem 1220 with any other instructor, even if you have to wait for another semester. Professor Owens is extremely disrespectful to students and could truly care less if the entire class averages a fail on all of his exams, which they do. Genuinely the worst, most condescending professor I've seen in the entire university.
If I could give him a 0 I would. He consistently gives sass when you ask a question, continues to mansplain & makes you feel dumb for not knowing the answers to his very abstract questions. He kept telling us that "it doesn't matter" or we should stop caring about our grades because he is aware that the way he teaches and tests will ruin GPA's.
Very test heavy, I spent a lot of time studying so much, reviewing lectures, quizzes and all of the homework assignments before every test only to get a terrible grade on each one. He never taught anything in his videos and just expected us to know how to do the assignments without actually guiding us on the problems he would quiz or us test on.
Class wasn't too bad. All of the tests were directly based on the homework and quizzes so if you understood those you should be fine on the tests. One thing I didn't like is that if you asked him a question, he would respond with another question most of the time.
Awful professor. His class is fully online, which is hard for any class, but this one is particularly difficult. He teaches through videos that are confusing and a waste of time. He is not helpful at all when you go to his office hours and when you ask questions on his discussion boards you never get a clear answer. Take chem with Statler instead.
For someone who has a vendetta against Chegg, it was ironic when it was utilized in office hours in order to explain a question that was on the test. If the professor can't answer a question, there is no reason why it should be on the exam. I am not a morning person, but chem at 7:30AM five times a week, is better than this mess of a class.
Treats students that do better in the class nicer than other students. Gives a lot of homework (which is expected for this type of course). The class is basically dependent on three midterms and an optional final (which replaces your lowest midterm score).
Professor Owens is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not care about his students and sends condescending emails at the start of every week. He always says that 'grades don't matter' because he knows his courses are absurd. Tell that to my GPA Greg.
I don't know what to say about him that meets these guidelines. All in all, he didn't teach the class. I don't say that as he didn't show us what to do. I mean that as he literally wasn't there, it was bad videos. His midterms are based on quizzes that are pulled from nothing and then you're expected to be judged on no curve for your efforts.
This class feels impossible to pass unless you're only studying chemistry. We are given little to no help to actually pass bringing down GPAs. Students who don't have the time or resources to be tutored every are destined to fail with this professor. This class is literally only meant for students that don't work outside of school. Do better
I enjoyed Owens class however he was super unprofessional outside of class when I tried to contact him. If I struggled with a homework question it took him over a day to respond everytime and multiple times he wouldn't answer the question fully while being very passive aggressive.
The other comments discuss what I'd cover, so add those to this - including test avg: ~50%. Good: Reference material (excluding lecture slides). Bad: Plan to study daily. HW: swears by ALEKs. Communication: talks down to you - immature, childish, and *arrogant*. Leverages Ph.D. title with the slightest friction and without hesitation.
Very condescending attitude towards students. Tests are extremely hard with failing averages. Would not recommend.
Professor Owens knows chemistry is hard. The workload and demanding material will be found in any GenChem class, Owens commitment to teaching students how to learn will not be. He cares. As evidenced by his data analyses of test scores and lecture viewership. He teaches students how to show up for their own goals. Truly one of a kind.
This class is very heavily reliant on tests, the professor provides no study guides and the practice exams that he has are riddled with mistakes so you don't even know if you are getting the answers right or wrong half the time. The class averages for the three exams were all around the 50% mark, and Professor Owens was very condescending.Good Luck
He is highly condescending towards the student. Also, the answers for the exam preparation materials are wrong, so we don't know if they are correct. Even the TAs couldn't explain some of his question-solving processes because of many mistakes. I would rather not take this class if you had a hard time with chemistry.
If you do the ALEKS and study the practice quizzes, you should be good. The class does require a lot of time, but if you stay on top of your work, it' pretty manageable.
The exams are worth 66% of your grade! But Professor Owens offers practice exams that have questions that are similar to the exam questions, so if you do those and you start early you'll be fine. He also offers a make-up exam that's cumulative. He was really kind and accommodating to me while I was sick, and responded to emails within 24 hrs.
Lots of homework that is nothing like the tests and tests are worth 80% of the grade. I had A's on all of my homework and practice tests, but the exams were so difficult and he doesn't provide you with as many equations on the exams as the other professors do.
I missed a test and he was so rude in the emails. Just don't cause any problems or have to contact him then you're fine. The tests are so hard and the ALEKS homework is incredibly annoying. I studied for weeks for my 2nd exam and ended up failing that regardless of how hard I studied. The only nice thing is his grading scale, an 85% is an A.
After taking Chem 1 from Professor Owens I knew I needed to take Chem 2 from him. Best online course ever- I actually was engaged. He rooted for me, answered my emails quickly, and had a very clear, easy grading scheme. By far one of the best professors at the University and is respected throughout the chemistry department. He cares and it shows.
Greg Owens' Chemistry II course worked really well for me and I learned a ton. If you read the textbook, watch the videos, do the homework, and try the practice quizzes, you will learn a lot and be well-prepared for the tests. It is not one of those easy online classes where you can get away with doing the bare minimum, but that's a good thing!
Grade is mostly made up of tests, which are moderately challenging but not too bad if you do the review before hand. Mostly stays out of the way as an online professor, but responds quickly if you message. Material for this class can be very difficult if you don't stay on top or don't care to understand chemistry. I loved it, but I am a chem major.
The material is very hard, which doesn't give Professor Owens much to work with. He's fair, keeps his canvas organized, and has plenty of resources to study with. The homework is alot, but without it the tests would be impossible. I took his class online so I don't know much about in person, but the curriculum was fair if you work hard.
While he is very on top of grading and lectures, the homework is nothing like the lectures or the exams. The exams are very heavily weighted and it does not matter if you do good on all assignments outside of tests. He is also condescending when I have reached out to him for help and is not understanding.
He makes exams EXTREMELY difficult by not giving the necessary materials to do well. He does not provide a review, 3X5 card, constants, or equations. He expects you to memorize everything except for on the final exam, which is cumulative, he provided equations and constants but then tested us on different equations. TAs were great though.
To start with, the exams are heavily weighted and he does not allow any notes on the test. He expects you to memorize all equations, constants, and conversions. Although he posts discussion boards and answers fairly quickly, his tone seems very condescending throughout the course. The homework is simple, however the lectures are long. 2/10.
I took Owens online so there wasn't much interaction, but when I did ask for help, he responded quickly. Chemistry is going to be hard no matter who you take it from, so I can't say that he's unique in having a difficult course, but expect a lot of work for this class.
the tests had no reflection what so ever when in came to getting feed back on what you did wrong
I took this over the summer with Kacey and I failed by 3 points. I thought having that knowledge would make this online option easier, but it did not. The lectures are boring, but helpful if you can force yourself to pay attention. I relied heavily on the ALEKS homework and hopefully, I pass the final, which will replace all lower exam grades.
Owens' Chem 1220 class was perhaps the worst I have ever taken. Owens has repeatedly called students lazy if they did not perform well, and comes across extremely condescending. The average midterms scores were ~55%, which includes a midterm 2 WEEKS before the final. Owens' response to the low average was to remove test review materials. Awful.
The exams are difficult but if you do what he tells you to do and put in the time necessary you can do well. He does an excellent job answering your questions so ask them! He will match the effort that you put in and genuinely cares about his students. He is an excellent teacher- he know his subject and is passionate about it.
At first, I thought Professor Owens came off as a little harsh. After seeing my ~50% scores on the first two exams, however, I realized that he was not exaggerating the amount of work required to succeed in this class. He provides all of the resources students need, but chemistry is difficult. Work hard, and he is more than willing to help you.
Owens was a solid choice for an online chem class. It's not as flexible as an online class should be with his strict deadlines, so expect to stay up to date like an in-person class. His tests can be tough but are not horrible. Its going to take a lot of work to do well in his class.
Honestly, Professor Greg isn't too bad. The first three exams are easy with proper studying, and the final is a bit challenging but still manageable.
The WORST professor I've ever taken. His approach to students struggling is the "touch luck you got yourself in this situation" approach, he doesn't curve grades nor offer extra credit. All the aleks homework he has you do is only 10% of your grade and close to none of it are on exams. DO NOT take him if you are not good at taking exams. EXAM HEAVY
Prof. Owens is a tough professor but he pushes you to exceed your potential. Chemistry is not easy, but he has a lot of resources to help you do well. It is on you to exert the time, effort, and to make sure you understand the concepts. It takes a LOT, but the resources are in front of you. I took two classes for him and he's great Good luck.
The course load is average. Some weeks are heavier than others but you are expected to learn new material while studying for your midterm. It is too much during exam weeks and then gets surprised when the average is 50%.
Professor Owens is an amazing online Chem professor. The class is entirely exam based, but if you watch the lectures and do the practice problems, the exams are identical. The video lectures are excellent and the class is well structured. Content is difficult, but following with the schedule and watching videos makes it not so bad!
Owens is a good professor who knows the material very well. Doing the Gen Chem 2 material online is difficult however, and the grade is purely on the exams. It's a double-edged sword. You don't have to do weekly homework or quizzes but if you fail the exams you're screwed. It's a lot of work, but all the videos and his textbook notes are helpful.
He's a good teacher in that you'll understand the material for the most part. If you study hard, it's a pretty easy A. But he's such a jerk to students who ask questions in the discussion forums, and he is constantly condescending in messages he sends to the class. He'll give you a good base knowledge, but you're on your own if you have questions.
Professor Owens is great! He is very good at organizing canvas modules to help you stay on track with course content. You NEED to read the textbook and watch the videos if you want to pass this course. The course content is very difficult but Professor Owens teaches content very well. The practice tests are super similar to exams so practice those!
There is a lot of content and you are only graded on tests, so you have to study very hard to do well. Owens is a little standoffish and tough on students, however, he offers tons of good resources and seems to want his students to do well. Utilizing the practice quizzes and worksheets is essential when studying.
He will tell you not to take the practice quizzes and exams more than once to avoid memorizing. Ignore him. Take the tests as many times as you have the stomach for. Memorize. Everything. Don't waste your time asking questions. I never once got a straight answer out of the man.
Professor Owens' class is no easy feat, but putting in the work pays off. The exams are challenging, but the video lectures and practice problems are super helpful. I found unstuckstudy ai great for extra chemistry study prep too.
I took Chem 1210 online. Prof Owens' class is tough but he is fair. He helped me with scheduling issues when needed. If taking the class online, you HAVE to go to a proctored test center to complete exams. The class is based on a 5 or 6 exam grades. Makes it extra tough. Read the textbook. Go to review sessions. Watch the lecture videos.
Greg makes chemistry easy to learn if you complete all the material he has prepared. Greg is responsive, kind, straightforward, and also a great photographer lol. Put in the TIME and don't skip any of the material. He has laid it all out, nothing more and nothing less. His voice sounds the exact same as the guy from Blacktail Studios on Youtube
IF YOU ARE ON SCHEDULE, YOU ARE BEHIND! Do things ahead of time as often as possible so you can do the practice quizzes! He says don't take them more than once, but most of the questions on the real test are very similar, so take them until you can't stand them anymore. Also ask questions on the discussion board!
This was an extremely difficult class, but the prof made all the difference. Not only was he kind and willing to answer all of my questions, but he made sure that we had enough resources to understand the material. Many practice quizzes were available, all with answer keys. It takes a minute to figure out how you're going to study.
This class is challenging. If you are not good at self-motivating, I would not recommend it. Your grade is made up of 5 proctored exams, but he does have an easier grade scale compared to the other chem classes + you don't have to take the final. Make sure you take the time to study and use all of the materials given. He wants students to succeed.
Like any online class, you have to stay up with the material. If you fall behind you'll fall hard, no leniency on due dates. Tests are like any chemistry class, 20 questions (many multiple choice) which means one wrong answer is worth at least 4%. Know the material well and you'll survive, overall not a bad class at all.
This was the worst class ever taken. The average on the exams are always 50% and he complains that nobody understand anything. If you are taking other classes this will take up 90% of your time. Heavy work load and you NEED to study HARD. There are 20 questions on the exams so miss one and you lose a lot of points. Awful prof.
This course is great if you can teach yourself and generally understand chemistry. However, if you have trouble with it, I would recommend taking it in person. There are no extra credit opportunities and there is a lot of material to study for exams, which make up most of your grade. You'll have to study a lot to do well, but it isn't impossible.
Buckle up, guys, because tests are worth 68% of your grade! If you are highly self-motivated and not a procrastinator, online chemistry with Owens could be for you. Although the exams are worth most of the grade, he provides ample practice materials for each exam. Definitely utilize the practice exams!
Uses old lectures and puts zero effort into this class. His lectures skip over reasoning for things that are just obvious to a PhD in Chemistry but wouldn't make sense to someone taking a 1000 level course. You'll spend more time memorizing exceptions to rules than you will spend actually learning chemistry because he doesn't allow notes on test.
He makes the exam with tough questions, however, he is truly give good grade for the final report!
I personally enjoyed this class. It definitely wasn't easy because of the amount of time you have to dedicate to the coursework daily, but the actual content wasn't too hard. This class is 4 units, but it feels like 6 (75% full time) because I took it over the summer. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I took it during fall/spring semester.
I didn't love the way he ran the online class, but it's better than other online classes i've had in the past. He was an easier grader than I expected, too.
he is one of the best professors I had in the U, he provides so many study tools for you to be successful. but he has hard deadlines.
Took Professor Owens online only class and it was manageable. Grading was straightforward but didn't really provide many resources for exams and class material. No virtual lectures so they were all text based and mediocre at best. Not much else to say.
I wish he could teach all my classes. Very challenging. I was scared to take chemistry because I never thought I'd pass. Instead I got an “A.” Best teacher I've ever had.
Professor Owens was awesome! He makes it very clear what things you should understand for the exams and has set up his class so that if you understand the reading and assignments then you will be able to do well on his exams. If you are willing to put in the time for this class then you will be able to get a good grade!
I never had to contact Owens, but the homework dosen't cover all the material. Make sure you understand the concepts before every test do ALEKS practice, watch the lectures, whatever but the tests aren't curved and they can be brutal. There aren't many questions, but there were always some from the practice quizzes and ALEKS so study them
