Great class to develop your communication skills. His lectures feel like you are attending professional development workshops. Midterm and final are based on presentations. To receive a good participation grade, you must go to office hours. Participating in class does not suffice.

He takes a very long time to grade papers so you're flying blind since you don't receive feedback. The comments on the papers were also contradictory and in a couple of cases where he tried to correct grammar and punctuation, incorrect. I did not get very much from his class because the feedback is just not there.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PROFESSOR YOU WILL EVER MEET IN YOUR LIFE!!! Final is tested on memorizing 20 papers/articles word by word and fill in blanks of the words. He has quite an ego and doesn't respect opinions that disagree with his. Tons of assignments and a lot of your grade depends on a group that you're randomly assigned to. There's a huge disconnect between the class and what they are looking to get out of and what he is preaching. Often time a lot of the material he teaches does not warrant us to pay $3000 with our money and time to listen. By far the worse professor ever and he doesn't listen to our feedback. No room for opinions outside of the professor's. Sad to see education has become a test of agreement with the professor, particularly when the "education" is factually incorrect. Questioning why I left the workforce and turned down a 200k exit opp I had in my hand last summer and yes, I was did it without taking a communications class. Crazy!

Communication is extremly important, the concepts covered are also very very important, it's poorly taught by the professor and there is little application of the concepts. Arrogant as the other comments said, and think he is right about everything. You can't do anything about it, you have to take his class.

This professor's way of teaching communications is a perfect example of "Do as I say not as I do." It perplexes how a professor who solely teaches communications consistently interrupts, misinterprets, and fails to listen to other students. There are definitely valuable lessons to be gained from this course but this course fails at teaching them.

I have no doubt that professor Patton means well, and that he is a valued professional in the real world. However, as a teacher I found him very old fashioned. He does not welcome challenges or differing opinions on his ideas, and places far too much value on 'participation' which can be defined as just repeating what was in the reading.

He's repeating every single class that exam is not based on memorization but after taking the practice it's simply impossible to answer his questions not through memorizing the excessive amount of readings.

This was a great class for me and many of my friends. Learned and grew a lot and transformed. You get to participate and share ideas more than any other core class and you get lots of real world practice. It is finals, so complaining time around campus, but you get out what you put into it and my growth has been huge. Thank you.

Communications is a key part of preparing for the job market. I know he means well, however, I expected more of a practical examination rather than a memorization final. No one is going to remember that one word answer to get us that A and be thankful it got us that job.

I took this class last year and recently found this thread again. I think the best analogy is in business, if consumers don't purchase your product, revenues decreases to the point of bankruptcy UNLESS the company innovates. In this course, market demand or consumer preference is irrelevant because it's a core req. with a power hungry professor.

Greg we aren't children, we are adults. As adults, anyone who comes to this page will notice that all the positive reviews do not sound like anything someone of our generation would say. We don't speak fluff. Lets live in reality here and not fantasy academia land. Oh and btw any email over 150 words isn't read in the workplace. Thanks

Took this class last semester and revisited again to review. It seems like many less positive reviews was taken down over the summer and many more positive reviews appeared. But overall - it was very uncomfortable how he talked about students who did not share the same view as he does, and credit success of students to this 'communication class'.

He is not a bad person, nor does he have bad intentions. It's true you can perceive him as arrogant or not self-aware. But whether his personality annoys you has nothing to do with the poor quality of his teaching and the lack of practical applications of the contents. He does teach for decades. Have basic respect, don't elevate to him as a person.

A class about better communicating with a written exam? This is a very repetitive and superficial class, with the teacher always telling you that he will give you all these secret recipes for success and never going in depth about any. This could be a great class if the professor allowed students to express themselves rather than interrupting them

Greg is someone who is out of touch with corporate America. Nobody communicates at work like he expects us to do with his long emails. This class had so much potential to make a difference for intl students through practical application, but instead, Greg regurgitated outdated reading material every week. It should be removed from MSBA. Waste of $$

Really valuable. I have more work experience than most in our class so I get it, use it and very helpful. Annoyed by less mature teammates who did not prepare, complained and missed the importance - yet needed it the most and now ironically complain about the job market they are not prepared for. Great opportunity - it is what you make of it.

Genuinely the worst professor at USC. His impact is net negative than it is positive. Waste of money on this class because it is mandatory. Super outdated, lots of false ideology, and cannot stand to be corrected or even engage in open dialogue. Classes are essentially run in a dictator style where only what he says/knows goes. Very condecsing.

He repeatedly argued that technical skills are useless and that soft skills alone are enough, very misleading in an MSBA. The content was repetitive, with no practical value. The exam focused on memorizing wording from readings not real application. A course about collaboration ended with students privately ranking teammates, creating tension&beef.
