Schwartz is way too hard. He expects us to really know the stuff already, and he doesn't ever really explain the material. He grades the tests really tough too. An average test score for him is like a C.
He was really hard, but if you go in for help he's good at explaining stuff
He was really hard and expected us to already know the material. He lectured on what he thought was cool not what the assingment was about. He will help you if you you ask but he makes you feel kind of dumb.
Not too bad a professor, although nothing spectacular.

I thought he was a great professor, very clear, great at explaining things.
Way better than having a grad. student for a teacher.
A nice guy, pretty straight forward. Lectures are clear and make sense. Test are insane. He finds ways to trick you and screw you over. Unless you are a person do not take him.
Avoid him like the plague
Not a good teacher for my learning style. I went to class everyday, didn't learn from him, he wasn't helpful during OH's. tests probs were huge with a combo of lessons all in one prob, so if you screw up one step....F! Tests are worth too much.
Way worse than a grad student! He was unapproachable and seemed to think we were all stupid! Homework was on material he would teach the next day, tests were extreamly hard and even though I studied my butt off, went to class every day and did all the homework, I still got a C!
A very good teacher, don't expect an easy A at all, though. He comes off a bit rough at first, but he is VERY approachable and will eplain just about anything. Go to class and take good notes, he lectures well and is very fair.
I thought he was a great professor. He could always tell when the class wasn't getting something, and he would go back over it again until they did. Not the hardest class i've taken, not too easy either.
Great lecturer, his homework system is great because you have two days to turn in the work. His tests are pretty hard, but if you show up everyday and do the homework you should be fine.
excellent teacher, homework system is great, very clear.
He's a nice guy and his teaching should be kinda easy, but for me it wasn't cause maybe I'm stupid

Great guy out of class, jackass in class! Tests no where relevant to class lectures
Very good teacher. Explains everything very clearly and has good examples. Gives a good review before the test, and puts a practice test online with answers to study with. Very approchable outside class for office hours. If you have the oppotunity to take a class with him definitely take it.
Good teacher, test are fair. Get on his good side and ask questions in and out of class. You can drop lowest teat score and replace it with your final if it helps your grade.
Good professor for 118, would not like him as my professor for new material, but for a review class, he does a good job.
I didn't really like him all that much. I thought he was kind of arrogent and a little annoying. The class should have been super easy (it was all review for me) but he confused me so I'd have to go home and re-explain stuff to myself each night. Nice enough guy though, he always answeres everyone's questions- even the dumb ones.
He's a little funny here and there, he goes over the homework a day before it's due, and goes over the material before the tests/exams. He's super great, it's just a bit of a tough class.
very helpful, very thorough in his explanations, always willing to help with any extra questions, very apparent that he enjoys helping others understand math.
Not a fan of Schwarts. He's an ok guy, and he loves math, but not the best teacher. He doesn't explain consepts more then one way, and if you don't get it, tough luck. He tends to like to teach shortcuts, and then never go over the full way to solve the problem. If you're good at memorizing, then I guess he's ok. Pay attention, and you'll live
Frustrating! He obviously knows what he's talking about but he doesn't teach it very well. He tends to throw confusing problems onto the tests. If you're good at math, you'll be okay, but this guy doesnt help much if you struggle with the concepts.
Tests are never the same as the lectures or homework. An "unforgiving" professor.
Lets just say that I understood math before his class. He confused the hell out of me!!! The homewark isnt so bad and if you go thru the book its easier but his test never follow his lectures and he could cover a lot more material if he spent less time going over one problem a day if he spent more time on lectures it would be easier. Good Luck!!
Tests not the same as homework. Not good at presenting the full picture or concept of the particular chapter.
Its a hard class and he was no help to me. Not a good experience for me.
meticulous teacher. covers all the bases. will answer any question thoughtfully, no matter how stupid. extremely helpful! i recomend him, espeicially above all the other TAs who have no experience. make SURE you understand the homework, and you will OWN the tests
Good teacher! I really paid attention, but he can be a hard greater. Not very good at giving partial credit. Good quality!
Best math teacher i've had in a long time.... the material can be hard if you don't have a strong math background but he loves to give extra help so just ask question and you'll do fine... i give him an A++
I hadn't had a math class in over 2 years, and was afraid that it would be too hard. Schwartz is an EXCELLENT math teacher, extremely organized and has a great homework system. You have to keep up, it's a tough class, but if you put the time in you will do very well.
Excellent teacher. This guy cares how you do in the class. He will do everything he can to help you if you meet him halfway(go to office hours, ask questions in class).
Great teacher, very clear and knowledgable. But his class is hard and has work almost every night, if you dont keep up, it can be a grind
He is an excellent math teacher! A very good system is used for homework and he is always willing to help if you have questions. His lectures are organized and easy to follow.
I thought he was a pretty good teacher. The class got kind of boring towards the end of the quarter since it was the same thing every day. But you should definitely go to class every day or you'll get behind. One time somebody else taught our class and they were terrible so it really made us appreciate Schwartz.
I hate math! I was scared because I hadn't taken it in two years, but Schwartz has a real passion for it and really cares about your success. He has a great system and will do all he can to help you as long as you meet him halfway. By the end of the course I had learned so much more than I expected. Just do the homework and ask questions.
Great teacher, easy to learn from, and he explains everything thoroughly. He is a nice guy in general and very fair how he grades the test and tells you what he expects from you in the class. Definitely recommended.
His tests and quizzes are pretty hard and puts in a good effort to confuse you with the hardest questions.. when you look at a problem on the homework and say "man i hope this isn't on the test..." it usually is on the test with other trickiness..... good teacher but tests are overly difficult in my opinion..
His teaching style was definitely a good match for me, but the tests and quizzes were kind of hard. For example, he might choose two of the hardest concepts you'd covered up to the point of the quiz and combine them into one question, at which point if you don't know both of them perfectly, you're screwed. Very fast-paced class, obviously.
He is a great teacher. Math isn't that fun for most students but he actually made it interesting and fun. The book was confusing but he made it easy to work with. He was very good at answering students and coming up with alternate explanations. Key is to just go to class. You have 2 days for each assignment which is good if you're lost. Great A+!
he's a good teacher knows his stuff and you learn some things but the tests are by far the hardest thing ever.... he had to curve the 3rd test cuz the average was 55% and the final which is worth about 27-30% of your grade... that average was a 66% and pretty much everyone got real crappy grades..
Horrible person, likes to watch the suffering of others during his tests. There is no point going to class since what he teaches isn't even on any of his exams. He likes to make random math up that nobody himself believes is correct, nor is it sensible for any student to actually learn from. Basically if you want to fail take him.
DO NOT TAKE! He generally gives only 1 example of new material and expects you to do the hw from that. When going over hw problems, he rushes through cause he expects you to be an expert from that 1 example. Puts the hardest problems possible on tests which make them impossible. Exam 3 avg = F. He will ruin your gpa. Was an A math student till now!
he just posted final class grades... 62.86% of the class received a final grade of an F or D... Class avg = 67.40%... think twice before taking him.
Do not take him unless you are a math major. He assigned two difficult sections that other profs did not. Further more, he though the book was to easy, thus made his own problems that take an entire evening to solve. The third test was an experiment...avg=F! I'm sorry, but you DO NOT PLAY EXPERIMENTS with studnets grades. AVOID IF YOU WANT A LIFE
The guy knows his stuff inside out and upside down. I am not a math major and I still got an A, no problem. Drops a quiz and 3 HW's. Go to class EVERY day, it is priceless. Pay attention and ask questions. If you want to LEARN the material and feel like you accomplished something, take Schwartz. He's my all time favorite professor. He's ripped too
This class isn't easy, but I think it definitely pays off in the long run. Schwartz has always been very helpful and patient with me.
Amazing teacher. You will learn more in his class than in most others, you will just have a tough time passing the class. BE READY TO STUDY
He tries to focus more on people figuring out stuff for themselves rather than telling students how to do it. A lot of knowledge is expected from students.
not helpful. does not post grades.
STUDY STUDY STUDY. This is a very challenging class if you don't study. But the professor is very nice and helpful. Just remember to STUDY!
Schwartz is one of the better math professors I have had. He has fair and sensible grading systems and is very knowledgeable and helpful. Homework is not mandatory, but if you want to learn the material and do well, go to class and do the problems. I am now taking 224 with him, and again, he is a great teacher, and loves math.
Hard class but a nice guy. Treats you like colleagues. Has a pretty generous curve so a C is pretty easy to get.
Pretty easy class, unless you suck at math.
I've had Schwartz for 3 math classes at Western. His courses are always challenging, but he does a solid job preparing students for the exams. At times he will explicitly prompt the class exam questions. He is very clear and makes math easy to understand. Be diligent about doing your homework and do NOT fall behind and you will do well.
terrible. had him for math 124- he's terrible. review sessions are a waste of time- because he just rambles about what he wants to talk about rather than what we need to know or understand. i'm in math 125 right now, and have an A now (because i have a different professor)
I found him to be a great teacher, used really simple explanations and gave examples that applied to the test. Go to class, do the hw and you should be able to get an A easily. I had 100 in the class till I skipped hw for a week.
He is good at explaining things well in class and it seems pretty easy but the tests are really hard and the hw doesn't prepare you for them. Plus, he doesnt let you turn in any hw late even if you are sick and email him ahead of time. All in all, he explains things well but the tests are hard and he's not really a nice guy.
This class is really easy if you just go to class every day and do the homework. 4 chapter tests and a final (cumulative). He gives you 2 class days to do each homework assignment and the day after he assigns the homework he takes questions on problems in class and does them for you! Just keep up with lectures and you'll do great. GET TEXTBOOK!
He's really helpful, homework was not mandatory, if you keep up with your homework and ask questions he will answer them in his office hours! A great teacher
Very clear and tailored concepts to the class with his explainations. Did numerous examples in class and would review homework questions at the beginning of each day. Didn't grade homework, although I believe he said he was going to start doing that soon. Anyway, great professor.
Schwartz is a nice person, but not the best teacher. The tests are very difficult and do not apply directly to material covered in class lecture or on the homework. I am a almost 4.0 student and have recieved very poor grades on the exams. I would recommend taking a different professor (especially if you are taking an accelerated course).
Great professor! Extremely helpful! Understands the pace of the class and doesn't rush through any material. Always available for outside help. Fun lectures, but always on topic and never a waste of time. Must complete all homework to succeed in his class. I would definitely take him again if I had the chance!
He's absolutely great at teaching, tries hard to make sure everyone's following lecture and that no one's left behind (which is a little frustrating sometimes if you already know what's going on). A really great prof, he's also funny and makes jokes during class. Sometimes he carries his math supplies (calculator, pencil, etc)in a fanny pack, hehe
Probably a good teacher, but terrible for Math 118. His lectures are very fast-paced, and he likes to give problems that confuse you. Lecture problems are straight forward, but homework problems are generally harder, and tests are ridiculously difficult. Class gets consistent low scores despite studying and doing all homework.
This is not an enjoyable or very doable class if you are taking other classes that are at all challenging. The lecture pace is MUCH too quick (unless you've already covered the material in previous classes) and he is very vague in his teaching. If ANY other teacher is available I would reccomend opting out with taking Schwartz!
Overall an extremely good teacher with really good ideas on how to teach and what learning is really about. He hates memorizing formulas and teaches the understanding of math instead of the techniques.
Schwartz is an awesome math teacher. I had him for pre-calc and i loved him so much I switched my whole schedule around just to get him for business calculus. He is not an easy teacher but is helpful, enthusiastic, fun, and informative. His teaching style is clear what you need to know. If you know what he teached you can ACE the tests. I love him!
Prof Schwartz was definitely a hard teacher, however he works hard to show the more conceptual side of math rather than the usual plug and chug teaching methods. He is a great teacher, however you will have to study hard to do well in the class. He is a little intimidating at first, but he is actually pretty cool and has a great enthusiasm for math
If you have any other hard classes, AVOID this guy for calculus. He tends to overcomplicate explanations in class and makes students feel stupid for asking Qs. Go to his office hours and he'll ask you if you've read the syllabus or checked the answers in the book. Then he'll assign hw that your calc tutor can't even do. Hard tests. Avoid!
Schwartz is an amazing teacher. He teaches the conceptual view of math, and he acknowledges that a lot of people have a hard time learning that way. Make an effort to go in and see him during office hours if you aren't doing well. Other than that you will learn a lot for the amount of hard work you put in.
Hes one of the best math teachers I have ever had. I learned a lot. If you do the work you will be fine in the class, just make sure not to slack on the synthesis assignments.
If you're strong at math he will be a great fit for you. If you're not the strongest at math, he might not be the right choice. He's helpful and his tests are pretty close to what the homework is. He is a hard grader, but if you work hard, you'll do really well.
Schwartz is the man. Exams are challenging, but fair. People who say anything else don't study or understand the concepts. He is extremely clear and his lectures are easy to follow and interesting. If you are struggling, he is very helpful in office hours & really cares about his students! Great WWU professor:)
Schwartz is the best math teacher I've ever had. Nice guy, super approachable, uses really clear examples and encourages class participation to aid understanding. He probably has a bunch of bad reviews from a while ago but he switched up his teaching style and it improved a lot.
Schwartz is a pretty great teacher. Sometimes he messes up in examples or trails off from what we're supposed to be learning but the tests are fair. Pretty big homework load, but do able. If you do the homework it will prepare you for the test and you should come out with a decent grade!
NO CLARITY. This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken at Western, the whole class was struggling throughout the entirety just to get above 70% on the tests! At one point the class average was 69.7%; about half his class couldn't advance so he wound up curving the final! Bizarro tests and impossible quizzes, with home work taking 5 hours.
The best way to sum up my experience in this class is: I went to his office hours for help and he straight up said "No, because then you'll know how to do it." Intentionally tries to trip you up with trick questions on exams. Overall a terrible class. AVOID Schwartz, take this class at the comm college with someone who cares about your learning.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but not because of the professor. The material was hard to understand. He was definitely helpful and willing to help, but the exams were of course much harder than the homework, so if you don't understand the material fully, the exams are pretty tough.
Wow what a great professor. He spends a lot of time making sure the students understand the material, and won't move on until they do. Makes hilarious pun accidentally during lectures. He is very easy to listen to, and incredibly helpful on questions. He teaches very conceptually, which results in an overall understanding of material.
A great professor. Homework wasn't required, but he gave 'pop quizzes' to make sure we were keeping us, but he did drop the 3 lowest scores. Tests were hard, but he gave you good feedback on what you did wrong. He gives lots of good examples in class and works through them with you. It definitely wasn't an easy class, but I learned a ton!
Challenging class but Schwartz will really work with you to make sure you succeed!
Schwartz is very passionate about math and gets excited whenever his students show interest. I was finally able to understand calculus because of him. He explains the math behind nearly everything, which is really helpful. Schwartz is the best!
Multivar calc is already hard enough, but my preferred learning style did not connect with Schwartz's method of teaching. He puts problems for new material on the board, lets the class solve it, and moves on, with little teaching. Class time is directed by the understanding of a couple smart people and if you're not one of them, you're left behind.
Greg simply doesn't care how his class does on exams. He gives tests that are significantly to long and incredibly difficult. Every two out of our three exams were significantly to long. The final exam was a mind bender that left the entire class without finishing him cutting us off 20 minutes after the 2 hours had already been up. Do not take.
Tests are super unlike homework and he throws in "trick questions" all the time. Tries to make homework problems, ends up impossible solutions. Didn't go over any homework whatsoever unless pestered about it. Cool guy, but he suucks at teaching math. I will see if I pass. I learned less the second time through calc ii. I feel stupider when I leave.
I'm not great at math, but by working hard and studying hard I was able to pass this class. He is a great prof who is very available and willing to help students in any way he can. He is very passionate about Math and tries hard to make sure everyone in the classroom understands the subject matter. Read the syllabus!
I took the 8 am Math 124 based on the ALEKS placement after taking a year off of math. It was rough, to say the least. There was daily homework which we would go over for half the class time and his lessons were mostly examples of how the subject would work in specific cases. Leaving the tests to have much harder questions than any of the homework.
Tests do not relate to content, appears to take joy in confusing students. Tutors not able to answer questions or problems. Class average is 70% some are taking for second time. That www allows this style of teaching where failure is expected and learning is your problem is inexcusable. He is a senior instructor that does not belong in classroom
I would not take this professor again. When he describes math problems he skips steps and assumes that all the students know this already. I took my first math test and I completely did horrible on it. He does not give credit in showing your work. The homework is too much and it doesn't correlate to the test. The test is much harder.
Homework did not help with exams at all. Exams were way too long to finish in 50 min and were 75% of class grade. Office hours were inconvenient. Seems like a nice guy thats passionate about math. Teaching style is just a little wonky.
I took Calculus in high school, and this class made me confused. He's really passionate about math, but if you aren't a math major don't take his class. If your algebra and pre-calculus skills are not good, this class will be brutal. He's willing to help you during office hours. You need to put a lot of work into this class to do well.
Does not make this class easy, especially since i was taking other homework-heavy classes. Homework is fine and understandable, but he grades the homework for accuracy which I found annoying, and his preparations and reviews for his test are significantly easier than his actual exams, meaning everyone got worse grades than they were expecting.
Lots of homework, and tests are much more difficult than the review homework. Helpful at explaining questions during office hours, but lectures can be pretty confusing. Spent a lot of time in the math center. Really great guy though, loves math and is super friendly.
Professor Schwartz was a great Calc teacher. It was my first calc class, schwartz has been teaching for quite sometime so he knows what students tend to struggle on. Compared to other teachers he is a bit homework intensive, the homework does help for tests. His office hours were helpful. Overall the class does require a lot of dedication good luck
I personally was nervous about taking his class because of some poor reviews on here, but I ended up having a great experience. I wasn't very passionate about math until I took his class. He simplifies things pretty nicely, but I will admit it can be confusing sometimes. He will usually give you two nights for homework assignments which is useful.
I was nervous to take my first calculus class, especially because Schwartz has some bad reviews, but after taking his class I don't know why he has such low ratings. Was always happy to teach and wanting to help. Fair amount of hw for a math class. Fair tests and quizzes. Clear explanations and lots of usage of examples. Perfect lecture pace.
Greg is really good at teaching and answering questions. Always seemed happy to be in class and is very friendly. Tests are very hard as he has high expectations but do the assigned problems (even though theyre time consuming and they arent graded) and youll understand enough to pass his tests
Schwartz was one of the best math teachers I've ever had. You can tell he cares for his students and is always excited to teach us. While his class is hard, it makes sense because calc is already difficult. While I did not do well in the class that was my fault and not his, take him for math if you learn via lectures, you won't regret it.
Schwartz is a real gem. I took his class in fall of 2020, and he's super helpful. He tries his best to help students during his lectures and really stops and tries to help students as much as he can. His lectures are very easy to go through and he teaches calc in an understanding way. He's a really nice professor out of the bunch.
Honestly this class was HARD, but Greg helped me in finding what I needed to do and he has a LOT of available office hours. He's really nice and genuinely wants to help his students learn and has a lot of enthusiasm. He often asks the class for feedback on things he does to see what works better. Had to drop, but would come back.
A lot of homework, and the tests were hard, but still a great class.
Gregory Schwartz is one of my favorite professors I have had at western, he really enjoys math and it shows. he really cares for his students and is willing to help out during office hours.
Greg Schwartz finds a way to make lectures both informative and engaging. He really knows what he teaches and can easily figure out a way to rephrase a topic if the class is struggling to understand. There are daily required homework assignments, but these are graded primarily on completion. The tests encompass what was covered in class.
He's a good professor, not great, not bad, but your avg good math teacher if you get him you didn't get a super lucky with a super good prof but you can't really go wrong with Greg either, solid teacher.
I got lucky with this class, all the tests and final were online. I would say this class is kinda difficult, you definitely have to pay attention and understand the material to know what you're doing. He is caring though, and will help you when you need it. I absolute hath math so sometimes it really frustrated me, but it is doable.
the GOAT math teacher at Western, simple. He had a great sense of humor and made the lessons engaging
He will teach the students what they had to learn. Provided explanations for every single operation he did and explained how to use Ti Calculators for the formulas. Great math teacher.
Greg is such a nice guy, definitely my favorite professor I have ever had at this school. He cares about you as a student and will answer all your questions in office hours if he can't get to them in class. He takes your feedback into consideration, and genuinely wants all students to pass. All of my friends have taken his class and love him.
have anything going on in your life that may affect class? he doesnt care even slightly and will mock you. think you understand the material? oh did you miss that negative sign? 0 points. studied for 7 days for the final and got 35%. second year in the engineering degree, never been even close to not passing a class until this professor.
Greg is a great teacher; he tries his best to answer every question as they come. BUT if you truly want to do well, I heavily recommend forming consistent study groups to do homework together. In his class he tries to have students give answers to the board problems, he encourages every answer even if it's wrong. I've learned a lot because of it.
I really enjoyed Greg's class. He lectures great and makes the material easier to understand. He is a super nice guy and he wants everyone to succeed. One assignment a week (online with unlimited attempts), a take-home quiz almost every Friday (can collab w classmates), and 3 exams and a final. Exams are easy if you know the material. Greg!!!!!!!!!
Professor Schwartz is a wonderful math professor! His teaching style reduces confusion without diminishing the complexity of what we're learning. His explanations and processes of tackling math are quite easy to understand. He's a funny and very kind professor, and the best I've had during my time at WWU - I recommend him to anyone taking math.
great teacher, math is hard but he teaches it well. He grades really well and has a good late policy, of course you need to be in class everyday or you will fall behind. Best math teacher I've ever had though gives you 7/10 on homework just for completion.
Idk if it was me enjoying the material or if he was just a great teacher but either way, class went by quick and this was a great course. His late policy is really fair relieving you of your 5 lowest homework scores and allowing you to turn in any homework late for 7/10 points as long as you write something down for each problem. Cool guy, take him!
Best math professor I've ever had! Really passionate for math and teaching, and does a great job explaining concepts.
Schwartz is a great professor. The material is tricky, but his explanations are effective. He encourages everyone to participate in his lectures, whether your responses are correct or not. It's clear he cares about his students, and he does his best to make the material understandable.
Greg is a great professor, one of the best I've had at WWU. If you attend everyday and engage in the material you will get a good grade. He goes over homework daily and gives great examples. 10/10
I took Calc 124 with Greg and thought he was a great professor. I am currently taking Calc 125 with him. He truly cares that his students understand the material. He goes over not just what but WHY things work the way they do. 3 midterm exams with the lowest dropped, a skills test, and a final, all in-person. Manageable hw maybe 2/3 times a week.
Greg is a solid math professor. Attend class, engage with the material, and you'll likely do well. I found Unstuck AI helpful for extra practice and preparation.
